Less than a month after she was promoted to athletic director at USF three years ago, Joan McDermott faced the task of hiring a replacement for head basketball coach Kyle Smith, who left for Washington State.

University president Paul J. Fitzgerald joked Sunday that “it took us exactly 23 seconds” to decide on Todd Golden.

“We had to move quickly,” McDermott said in a phone interview from Indianapolis, where the 10th-seeded Dons (24-9) are preparing to face No. 7 Murray State (30-2) on Thursday in their first NCAA Tournament game since 1998.

The reality is McDermott spent most of that 2018-19 season traveling with the basketball team, giving her up-close insight into what she came to view as the ideal modern coach.

Golden was just 33 years old at the time and Smith’s associate head coach, but McDermott saw his crack for understanding and utilizing analytics and his ability to connect on a personal level with players.

“What I saw was incredible knowledge,” McDermott said. “But he really had great rapport with the student-athletes.”

Then she reached out to a friend who worked at Auburn, where Golden spent two seasons working under Bruce Pearl before returning to the Bay Area to reunite with Smith. “Omigosh, our staff loves him,” McDermott was told. “He’s got an unbelievable eye for finding talent.”

“For me, that was kind of the last piece,” McDermott said. “A lot of guys have that analytical mind but can’t lead. He’s really special. He has all those pieces.”

For Golden, now 36, this was the plan. The Dons won at least 20 games in all three seasons under Smith, but couldn’t crack the stranglehold Gonzaga, Saint Mary’s and BYU have held on the upper end of the West Coast Conference.

“It’s one thing to strive for it, it’s another thing to actually accomplish it,” Golden said. “We made history and that’s something I’ll be super-proud of for the rest of my life.”

His players give Golden a lot of credit.

“He led us this way and we go as he goes,” two-time All-WCC point guard Jamaree Bouyea said. “With (the program) in his hands, I think the sky’s the limit, for sure.”

Backcourt mate Khalil Shabazz said Golden recruits “genuine guys” and lets them be themselves. “Having the amount of love that goes between the coaches and the players is something we can’t really explain. You just have to be in it,” Shabazz said. “His resume speaks for itself. He’s been the head coach for three years and we’re dancing.”

Golden is 57-35 in three seasons, and no one is less surprised than Smith. They have known each other since 2003, when Smith was an assistant on Randy Bennett’s staff at Saint Mary’s and Golden was a walk-on freshman guard from Phoenix.

Smith sees a familiar blueprint. “He wants great attitude, great work ethic, guys who really want to be here. All that comes from Randy,” he said.

As a player, Golden was much the same guy he is today.

“He played with a lot of spunk — just like he coaches,” Smith said. “He was a high-energy guy, really verbally, a good passer. He’s very bright, has a very quick mind.”

Golden wound up starting 82 games for the Gaels and helping them to a pair of NCAA Tournament bids. Smith later hired him at Columbia, and finally at USF. They spent a total of 10 years together.

“It’s someone that went through the wars with you. There’s a lot of trust,” Smith said. “It’s a pretty special relationship. I wouldn’t be where I am without him and he wouldn’t be where he’s at without me.”

Smith also has been impressed with Golden’s willingness to make changes to his staff and his roster. He brought in three Division I transfers this season, shaking up and improving his starting five.

Unfortunately for the Dons, one of those key transfers — All-WCC forward Yauhen Massalski who arrived from San Diego to average 13.5 points and 9.4 rebounds — won’t play Thursday after re-injuring his knee, Golden said.

Still, it all confirms what McDermott suspected from Day 1 with Golden. “We’re very lucky to have him,” she said.

Keeping Golden many be tougher. McDermott began conversations with alumni before the season about generating the resources to retain him, and the school is working on a new contract for its coach.

McDermott is confident Golden will be smart about this, as he is with all things. “If he makes that next move, it’s got to be the right fit for himself, for his career and his family,” she said. “We’re going to make sure he does not want to leave.”
