Amazon

If you’re cutting the cord to your cable company, you’re not alone; in fact, you are in luck. You can still watch the NFL on TV with an affordable indoor antenna, which pulls in local over-the-air HDYC channels such as CBS, NBC, ABC, Fox and PBS. Here’s the kicker: There’s no monthly charge.

Anyone living in partially blocked-off area (those near mountains or first-floor apartments), a digital TV antenna may not pick up a good signal – or any signal at all. But for many homes, a digital TV antenna provides a seriously inexpensive way to watch college football without paying a staggering monthly fee. Indoor TV antennas can also provide some much-needed TV backup if a storm knocks out your cable (or your cable company gets in a squabble with a network).

This amplified HDTV antenna, claims to have a 50-mile range and offers 36 channels. It’s rated 4.0 stars by Amazon reviewers.

Said one Amazon customer, “When the price of this antenna dropped to $50, it was competitively priced with what you would find on the shelves at your local Radio Shack. If you’re considering this product, you’re probably already questioning your cable television bill and are looking around for a cheap way to get the Big 3 plus Fox and PBS. This antenna delivered that for us right out of the box.”

Watch the 49ers vs. Browns game on your phone with NFL+

If you want to catch the game on your phone — and all the amazing football ahead this season — check out NFL+. The premium streaming service, starting at $40 per year (or $7 per month), offers access to NFL Network. And yes, that includes games being broadcast out-of-market. To boost your NFL experience even further, you can upgrade to NFL+ Premium with NFL RedZone and watch up to eight NFL games simultaneously. A seven-day, free trial is available.

Top features of NFL+:

You get access to all NFL preseason games, including those that are out of market.

NFL+ lets you watch stream local and primetime regular season games on your phone or tablet, but not your TV.

Includes the NFL Network (and NFL RedZone with NFL+ Premium), so it’s a good option for those who are looking to stream football on the go.

Will Dak get to the Super Bowl (or close)? The Dallas Cowboys were off to a splashy 2023 season start, 3-1 coming into Week 5. QB Dak Prescott promised to throw less picks than last season when he led the league for picks thrown. He’s at four this season. Cowboys fans hope he makes good on his promise. But Dak’s bigger focus is taking the Cowboys to the Super Bowl. Judging by the Cowboys’ performance in Week 5, getting past the mighty San Francisco 49ers this season is going to be tough. But then again, it is for everybody.

Taylor Swift is the only thing bigger than the NFL: While Swifties were quick to ‘ship Travis Kelce and Taylor Swift after the Eras Tour star showed up at Arrowhead Stadium during the Kansas City Chiefs Week 3 game against the Chicago Bears, Tay Tay herself seems all-in on her budding romance with the Chiefs superstar tight end. The Taylor-effect on the NFL has been massive, from Kelce gaining over half-a-million new Instagram followers in a day, to the NFL finding an entirely new fan base in Taylor-loving younger women — a coveted audience for the league. The NFL has fully embraced the league’s newest ambassador, friendship bracelets and all, much to the chagrin of Kelce who admitted on his podcast the league has “gone too far” with its Swelce/Kelswift coverage.

That 49ers defense is dangerous: Brock Purdy silenced naysayers last season when he took over after both QBs Trey Lance and Jimmy Garoppolo suffered season-ending injuries. Coach Shanahan traded Lance and gave Purdy the starting job this season with little trepidation that the last pick of the 2022 NFL Draft had what it takes. Shanahan’s decision has paid off five weeks in, the team is undefeated and Purdy shows full command of the team. But the 49ers Nick Bosa-led defense is what could take this team to the Super Bowl. The Niners came into Week 5 one of two undefeated teams remaining with no sign of slowing down.

In September 2022, a major data center operator based in the western suburbs of Chicago was facing a dilemma that has become all too common in today’s climate.

The delivery of the power distribution units, or PDUs, the operator relied on to keep centers running was extremely late, delaying the opening of a new 185K SF facility. This delay was costing time and money and keeping clients from gaining access to the data storage they needed.

Thankfully for these operators, they were working with Clune Construction, a Chicago-based general contracting firm with offices in Dallas, Los Angeles, New York, Phoenix, San Francisco and Washington, D.C. Over the last few years, Clune has adopted strategies for overcoming the supply chain issues that have been plaguing data center construction.

After the client decided to select an alternative brand of PDUs in case its preferred choice didn’t arrive, Clune Senior Vice President and Senior MEP Coordinator Joe Zobel and his team devised a plan to prep the location so they could work with either solution.

“We needed to accommodate multiple choices,” Zobel said. “This way if our client were to change their minds on which equipment to install, there would not be any cost impact. It gave them the freedom to make the right decision for their facility.”

He added that there were 75 of these units, so it would have been very costly and time-consuming for this data center client if an adjustment to its new facility was needed to accommodate a last-minute decision to go with a different solution. Having freedom like this has become particularly important for data center operators, who have been dealing with significant project delays since the pandemic began, which led to major supply chain disruptions.

While these disruptions have impacted every asset class, Zobel said that they can be particularly devastating for data centers, which are mission-critical facilities that can cost companies thousands of dollars for every second they aren’t operational.

“As soon as construction is completed, data centers can net a lot of income for our clients,” he said. “So if there are delays and they can’t receive a month or two of rent from their clients, it can be significant. It can also make those who are renting the space consider other options.”

The Clune team has decades of combined data center experience, so it is uniquely positioned to understand these challenges and devise strategies to overcome them. In recent years, these strategies have included developing new workflows to minimize the impact of delays.

When Clune is awarded a project, its team analyzes the specified equipment and materials and is upfront with the client about the lead times it can expect for these items. If necessary, it proposes alternatives that can be purchased immediately to ensure the best price.

“We adjust the bidding process to reflect what we are seeing in the design and the potential delays that may arise from it,” Zobel said. “We view our clients as partners, and the more we collaborate with them and understand what needs to happen and by what date, the better we can meet their schedule.”

Zobel’s role as mechanical, electric and plumbing, or MEP, coordinator at Clune has also evolved as the company continues to work to meet its data center clients’ needs. He said that while Clune has always partnered with clients and taken responsibility for the equipment, now, when there appears to be no end in sight for supply chain delays, the team is going above and beyond to ensure clients are getting the materials they need.

“We have weekly calls with all vendors and we get into every detail of their fabrication schedule. This helps confirm that they have all the necessary parts from their vendors to build the equipment,” Zobel said. “If they are having trouble obtaining a part, we then get on the phone with the engineer of record to decide if we can recommend an alternative to keep the flow going.”

His team also includes its trade partners on these calls to discuss installation methods with the vendors. The goal is to make sure that all parties completely understand how everything should be installed so Clune is aware of and can prepare for any changes that must be made at the factory.

Zobel said that in the past, factory witness tests where the Clune team would go and personally test every piece of equipment being manufactured were common practice. These visits can be expensive, and over the years, clients stopped requiring them. Now, however, as supply chain issues persist, Clune has brought this practice back, letting clients know which pieces of equipment are worth the trip to test in person.

“Sometimes it’s because the information we’re receiving from the factory isn’t clear,” he said. “Other times, there are elements that could potentially pose field-related challenges if we don’t verify it prior to their arrival at our site. Our motto in these scenarios is, ‘Trust, but verify.’”

As a result, Zobel said Clune and its factory partners have been able to strengthen their relationships. In the past, vendors have occasionally tried to resolve minor issues before sharing the problem with Clune or its clients, he explained.

“We have created an environment so if they have to, they are able to give us bad news, even if the bad news is only a possibility. This way we can decide if we need to make a change in the field,” Zobel said. “There’s no penalty. We just want the truth. The more we know, the better we can mitigate the problem.”

He said that to better plan for the future and the likelihood of continued supply delays, Clune is developing a database of lessons learned and things to look for so it has more details to share with its partners and its teams across the country.

“The more information we have, the more tools we gain to help us make the best decisions for our clients,” he said.

Today’s Google Doodle honors the 127th birthday of German-born Jewish poet Nelly Sachs, whose life and work were profoundly altered by the cataclysmic damage inflicted by the Holocaust.

“I represent the tragedy of the Jewish people,” she said upon winning the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1966. Sachs, who was also a playwright, referred to the metaphors in her work as “wounds,” but she posited that human beings were capable of renewal even in the face of annihilation.

Subscribe to Observer’s Entertainment Newsletter

Sachs, who was born into a wealthy family in Berlin and grew up quite sheltered, fled her native country for Sweden in 1940 with the aid of novelist Selma Lagerlof when she and her mother learned that they were being sent to a forced-labour camp.

The poet’s ability to express herself through writing carried her through bouts of mental illness and terrifying ordeals with the Nazis. Sachs and her mother’s Sweden apartment was once invaded by the Gestapo, who subjected the two women to a terrifying interrogation that frightened Sachs so much she briefly lost the ability to speak.

Her voice, then, was an inspired, reverberating rebuke to those who would silence her. Sachs dealt in subject matter that plumbed the depths of her and her community’s despair, but her language was deeply influenced by German Romanticism; her verse approached the ecstatic. Through her pain, Sachs glimpsed new worlds.

In honor of her legacy, we look back at three of Sachs’ greatest poems, all of which have stood the test of time and still resonate today.

The first, “O The Chimneys,” is her most famous work, and also the name of Sachs’s collection of poetry and prose released by Farrar, Straus & Giroux in 1967. It finds Sachs lamenting the genocide of her people, but also the disappearance of any form of true shelter. The Jews, ripped from their homes, were forced to reside in “planned dwellings of death” from which they could never escape.

O Die Schornsteine (O the Chimneys)

O the chimneys
On the carefully planned dwellings of death
When Israel’s body rose dissolved in smoke
Through the air –
To be welcomed by a chimney sweep star
Turned black
Or was it a ray of the sun?
O the chimneys!
Paths of freedom for the dust of Jeremiah and Job –
Who dreamed you up and built stone upon stone
The path of smoke for their flight?
O dwellings of death
Set out so enticingly
For the host of the house, who used to be the guest –
O you fingers
Laying the stone of the threshold
Like a knife between life and death –
O you chimneys
O you fingers
And Israel’s body dissolves in smoke through the air!

Sachs, who herself was spared the fate of being gassed and incinerated by Nazis, spent the rest of her life wondering what her unlucky family members and fellow countrymen had experienced. As an artist, she felt that articulating their final moments was her burden to bear. This mission forms the core of “If Only I Knew,” which also was published in the collection O the Chimneys.

Wenn ich nur wüßte (If Only I Knew) (translated by Rebekah Wilson)

If only I knew
what the last thing you saw was.
Was it a stone, that had drunk in
countless last looks, until, in blindness,
they fell on the blind?

Or was it earth,
enough to fill a shoe,
and already black
from so many partings
and causing so much death?

Or was it your final path,
bringing you farewells from all the paths
you had ever walked?

A puddle, a reflection in metal,
perhaps your enemy’s buckle,
or some other small interpreter
of heaven?

Or did this earth,
which lets no one depart from here unloved,
send you a bird omen through the air,
reminding your soul that it flinched
in its pain-scorched body?

Sachs, who died in 1970, wrote the following poem in 1968, and in the language you can discern the ways she repeated herself purposefully throughout her career. The reappearing star imagery that twinkles through her universe of smoke, brick and darkness suggests that her overarching thesis was one of hope.

Wenn der Tag leer wird (When the Day Empties Itself)

When the day empties itself
in the twilight,
when the imageless time begins,
the lonely voices join together–
the animals are nothing other than the hunting
or hunted–
the flowers no more than fragrance–
when everything becomes nameless as in the beginning–
you go under the catacombs of Time,
which open for those who are near the end–
there where the heart buds grow–
into the dark inwardliness
you sink downward–
already past death
which is only a windy passageway–
and freezing from going out
you open your eyes
where a new star
has already left its reflection–

Amidst a resurgence of emboldened neo-Nazi groups and white supremacist sentiment in America, Sachs’s writing feels especially relevant today not only because it serves as a reminder of the past, but because it proposes radical routes to freedom. The might of institutionalized, professionally executed hatred could not take from Sachs what was hers. Let her life be a lesson to all of us.

With the end of the Fassking’s Gardens era at Grand Station, Alameda’s next phase of growth was about to begin. Alameda, once primarily a place for weekend picnics and summer retreats, has become a town of houses. In Part 1, Part 2 and Part 3 of this story, we learned how German immigrant Louis Fassking founded Alameda’s largest and most successful hotel and resort at Fassking’s Park. The railroads, which had done so much to bring business to his resort, were now bringing that business to the West End seaside resorts, the most famous of which was Neptune Beach. Those same railroads, as they expanded their lines and stations, also made Alameda a more desirable and convenient place to live, with regular rail and ferry services to and from San Francisco and Oakland.

A view of Grand Station in 1940 and today. From the founding of Fassking’s Hotel here in the early 1860’s to the introduction of the railways in 1864, through the era of the ‘Big Reds’ in the South Pacific to 1941 and into today’s bustling CBD, this station has been a hub of activity for over 160 years. This Queen Anne High Basement Cottage was built in 1892 and sold for $2,300. It displays a particularly large and spectacular variation on the sunbeam theme in its pediment. Photo Steve Gorman.

At the end of the 1880s, the businessman Felix Marcuse (1847-1925) and the musician Julius Remmel (1855-1913), independently of one another, began to deal more and more with the sale of real estate. Although each was successful in their chosen field, they couldn’t resist Alameda’s booming housing market. By 1890 they had merged and when Fassking’s tract was vacated of its old hotel buildings they were perfectly positioned to seize the opportunity. A large, empty piece of land right next to a train station must have seemed like an excellent investment to the new company Marcuse & Remmel.

They bought land for 10 cottages on the newly created Minturn Court, along with enough land for five more houses on Lincoln Avenue. Although new to the field of house building, they hired architects and builders to build affordable homes in the style of the period – Queen Anne High Basement Cottages. While other builders such as Joseph Leonard and Charles Shaner built larger and more opulent homes for wealthier clients, Marcuse & Remmel focused on more modest but stylish cottages for the average earner. Their cottages typically cost $1,400 to $2,500 and can be purchased on installments with as little as $100 down payment and $10 per month.

Join historian Dennis Evanosky and the Alameda Post for a walking tour of Caroline and Weber Streets on Saturday, February 25 or Sunday, February 26 at 10am. We’ll learn about the notable architects – including Marcuse & Remmel – who designed and built homes in the 1200 and 1300 blocks of these Gold Coast streets. We will also learn personal details about some of the people who lived in the historic houses there. We meet at the intersection of Caroline Street and Fair Oaks Ave at 10:00 am both days. Tickets are $20 each for the Saturday or Sunday tour. Limited tickets may be available on the day of each tour.

Like much of the street, this home was built in 1891 in the Queen Anne High Basement style and originally cost $2,250. One of the distinctive features of these houses is the heavily decorated gable with a full circle sunburst. Left photo unknown source. Right photo Steve Gorman.

Marcuse & Remmel’s first major project was to convert an empty lot three blocks from their Bay Street offices into Mastick Court, a cul-de-sac of 11 Queen Anne-style cottages built in 1890. The success of this project led to the Minturn Court development where 15 cottages were built in 1891 and 1892 on the site of the old Fassking’s Hotel. Ten of them can still be seen on Minturn Court itself, with another five located just outside Lincoln Avenue. They are in various stages of alteration, renovation or conservation but there are some excellent examples of the work of Marcuse & Remmel in the early 1890’s along these streets.

It is interesting to compare the cottages on Mastick Court, Marcuse & Remmel’s first major project, with those on Minturn Court, the firm’s second major project. Within a year they had greatly improved their game, and the increased level of detail and beauty of the houses shows it. The firm was constructing 58 buildings in 1891 and averaging 60 buildings a year through 1896, making them among Alameda’s most prolific builders.

Most of their work was in Alameda, but about a fifth of their commissions were in other cities, and they even opened a branch in San Francisco in 1890. Marcuse & Remmel eventually employed a team of over 60 skilled workers such as architects and draftsmen, carpenters, plumbers, plasterers and painters. Bert Remmel (1872-1927), Julius’ younger brother, joined the firm around 1895 and may have played a role in the shift to more ‘modern’ and transitional designs as the Colonial Revival style entered the scene.

The time of Marcuse & Remmel is coming to an end

In the late 1890s the ongoing depression began to take its toll on Marcuse & Remmel. Their annual number of homes fell below 50 and continued to fall each year. By 1898, new orders were coming mostly from San Francisco, and their incredibly prolific and prolific house building era in Alameda was coming to an end. In less than 10 years they had built over 500 homes in the Bay Area, most of them in Alameda. But as sales slowed and bills piled up, they found themselves in the same position Louis Fassking had at the end of his run at Fassking’s Park – in debt and in trouble with creditors. And so the cycle of boom and bust, so often repeated, reemerged.

The ad lists their business address in San Francisco in addition to their original Bay Station location. By 1898, more business was coming from San Francisco, and their reign as Alameda’s most prolific house builders was nearing an end.

By Christmas 1899, reports in local newspapers reported the transfer of all of Marcuse & Remmel’s assets to the Puget Sound Lumber Company, their largest creditor. In February 1900, the San Francisco Examiner published articles with headlines such as “Home Builders Forced Under” describing the bankruptcy of Marcuse & Remmel. Both Felix Marcuse and Julius Remmel worked separately with Bert Remmel in other areas including notary public and real estate, but never again was there to be such a golden age of building as they witnessed in Alameda in the 1890s.

Julius Remmel died in 1913, Felix Marcuse in 1925, and Bert Remmel in 1927. Though they are long gone, their spirit lives on in the many examples of their fine work throughout Alameda and the Bay Area. Its characteristic elements such as sunbeams, molded plaster, structured facades, an enormous variety of milling work and curved metal sills under bay windows let the viewer know immediately that it is a creation of Marcuse & Remmel.

Learn about another member of the Remmel family, Jacob Remmel, who founded the Teutonia Park and Homestead Association in Alameda.

Lasting treasures from the past

While numerous examples of Marcuse & Remmel’s work still stand in Alameda today, there are less tangible reminders of Louis Fassking’s legacy. In Part 3 of this story, we looked at the two surviving sections of Fassking’s Hotel, which still stands today on the corner of Eagle Avenue and Stanford Street. But there is one remnant of the old Fassking’s Hotel, an ornate door that somehow escaped the junkyard and has been preserved in the Alameda Museum.

The Alameda Museum has an original door from Fassking’s Hotel, believed to date from 1874 when the hotel buildings were replaced after the Great Fire. The detail and beauty of this door suggests the grace and beauty of what was once Alameda’s largest hotel and resort. Photo Steve Gorman.

This door, accompanied by a framed description on the wall, is known for the fine craftsmanship of its time. Rather than being made of plywood or other cheaper construction methods, these door panels are “chamfered and mitered, stiles and railings joined with wooden dowels, and the panels fitted in mortise and tenon joints. The window is made from pieces of stained, textured and etched glass. This door is truly a work of art,” according to Ron Ucovich’s The Fassking Hotel Door. This door gives us just a touch of the grace and beauty that must have characterized Fassking’s Hotel and Gardens.

The late 19th century was truly a time of craftsmanship and beauty of design. Things were made to last, including buildings and houses. The fact that we can admire these treasures from the past today is a testament to the quality of the work, the building materials (old redwood) and the dedication of the preservationists to keeping them alive for future generations. Thanks to Cohen’s Railroad, Fassking’s Park, and Marcuse & Remmel, the Grand Station retains the basic layout of a 19th-century railway station and business district. Stop by anytime and take a stroll through history while admiring our Alameda treasures.

Elend kam trotzdem.

RELATED: 2023 NFL Playoffs Schedule – Bracket, game dates, times and TV networks for Conference Championships and more

San Francisco 49ers:

The San Francisco 49ers look to win their first Lombardi Trophy since the 1994 season and they could likely do it with third string QB Brock Purdy, who will become the fifth rookie quarterback in NFL history to start a conference championship game this Sunday. Purdy, who was the very last pick in the 2022 NFL Draft, moved up the depth chart after Trey Lance sustained a season-ending ankle injury in Week 2 and Jimmy Garoppolo broke his foot in week 13.

The 49ers pulled off a 19-12 victory over the Dallas Cowboys in last weekend’s divisional round marking the team’s 12th straight win. Additionally, this will be the third time in 4 years that San Francisco has reached the NFC Championship game. Purdy finished 19-of-29 for 214 yards in the win. RB Christian McCaffrey had 16 touches for 57 yards while TE George Kittle had five catches for 95 yards.

QB Jalen Hurts, who has been nursing a sustained right shoulder injury in Week 15, finished 16-of-24 for 154 passing yards and two touchdowns in the win. After the game Eagles head coach Nick Sirianni compared Hurts’ impact to NBA legend Michael Jordan.

Hello, it’s Tuesday, Dec. 13, and here are the stories you shouldn’t miss today:

TOP STORIES

The Cecil Hotel rooms for LA unhoused are still mostly empty

The historic Cecil Hotel, with its haunted reputation and 600 rooms, reopened in December 2021 as a privately funded permanent supportive housing project. It’s open to any of the thousands of unhoused Los Angelenos with a government-funded voucher. Many viewed the project as a promising new model in LA because of its size and flexibility.

And yet, a year later, two-thirds of the Cecil remains unoccupied. Even with solid funding and the best of intentions, the Cecil project has struggled to overcome a system beset with a slow-moving bureaucracy and multiple failure points, and to offer a housing stock that serves a population with myriad needs.

Mayor’s new emergency order meets chaos at City Hall

It was the first major policy announcement from the new administration of Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass — a declaration of a state of emergency aimed at providing immediate relief to thousands of unhoused residents.

That declaration needs a City Council vote today before going into effect, a simple enough task in a quieter political moment. Except the council has left one meeting until mid-January, and has been struggling to conduct its business amid a scandal surrounding Councilmember Kevin de León.

De León faces a furor over his participation in a conversation featuring racist remarks and, more recently, a violent incident involving protesters at an Eastside toy giveaway, which only intensified the tinder keg atmosphere at City Hall.

The P-22 mountain lion was captured in an LA backyard

P-22, celebrity mountain lion and Griffith Park’s most wanted big cat, was captured in a Los Feliz backyard, the California Department of Fish and Wildlife announced.

The department confirmed P-22 was captured after they received an anonymous tip that he’d been struck by a car in the area. Officials could not confirm if the mountain lion had been hit but said he was “in stable condition.”

P-22 had been sought for evaluation by the National Park Service and the California Department of Fish and Wildlife after “exhibiting some signs of distress” in recent weeks, including killing a leashed Chihuahua and attacking another dog.

FTX founder Sam Bankman-Fried arrested in the Bahamas

Sam Bankman-Fried, the disgraced co-founder and former head of digital-asset exchange FTX, was arrested in the Bahamas.

Bankman-Fried’s detention followed a notification from the US that it had filed criminal charges against him, the Bahamas attorney general said in a statement. Authorities in both countries had been probing his involvement in the company’s collapse last month.

In a statement, US Atty. for the Southern District of New York Damian Williams said the arrest was made at the request of the American government.

Can California’s electric-vehicle push overcome the red-state backlash?

Environmentalists, along with industry and government leaders, see a transformation afoot in the electric vehicle industry after decades of false starts. They have acknowledged, however, that they can’t complete the shift if electric cars are viewed as something only for rich liberals in California and New York. They need everyone.

But in places like Indiana, it can be tough to own an electric car. Major cities are located far apart, with few charging stations in between. And the most popular EVs remain out of reach for many consumers in places where incomes tend to be lower.

The state is also deep red. And Republicans are much less likely than Democrats to consider buying an EV, according to a poll conducted for The Times by Leger, a Canadian-based polling firm with extensive experience in US surveys.

Edgar Sargsyan’s journey through LA’s criminal underworld

Edgar Sargsyan’s journey to bankruptcy court began with a one-way ticket from Armenia. It descended into the underworld of Los Angeles, where he learned at the elbow of a crime figure how deals are made and dirty money can underwrite a glittering facade of legitimacy.

Sargsyan shook hands with governors and presidents at a Beverly Hills cigar club and conferred with gangsters in jail. He made a fortune through fraud and drug dealing while surrounding himself with an entourage of corrupt lawmen.

But by 2018, the fun was over, the money was drying up and Sargsyan found himself in bankruptcy court, where what remained of his companies’ assets were to be sold off.

Drought-ravaged LA seeks out a contaminated Superfund site. As drought and climate change ravage California’s once-reliable supply of drinking water, officials in Los Angeles are setting their sights on a relatively new, almost untapped resource for the city’s 4 million residents: the Superfund site in their own backyard.

Supreme Court upholds California ban on the sale of flavored tobacco products. The Supreme Court on Monday rejected a last-minute plea from the tobacco industry and cleared the way for California to enforce a statewide ban on the sale of most flavored tobacco products, including menthol cigarettes.

Tory Lanez will stand trial in Megan Thee Stallion’s shooting case this week. Prosecutors allege the shooting happened shortly after both hip-hop artists left a party in the Hollywood Hills in July 2020. The case has reinvigorated discussions about misogyny in a hip-hop industry and it comes after a series of violent attacks on hip-hop artists in Los Angeles in recent years.

On same-sex marriage, “the country has caught up with California.” More than 18 years after Gavin Newsom defied federal law by issuing marriage licenses to same-sex couples as San Francisco mayor, President Biden is on the cusp of signing legislation that ensures gay marriages are recognized by the federal government and in every state in the nation .

In Ukraine, a mayor who surrendered his town becomes a symbol of treason. In the small town of Kupiansk, there was no sudden bombardment, no violent mayhem — the city’s mayor, politically friendly with Russia, spoke to a Russian commander over the phone and then simply surrendered. Misery arrived anyway.

Columnist and culture critic Mary McNamara writes, “Last year, a Times investigation revealed the Hollywood Foreign Press Assn.’s gift-expecting, early-access-demanding, pay-to-play approach to its awards and lack of any Black members. Everyone was outraged. Publicists threatened a massive boycott, Tom Cruise said he would return his statuary. NBC dumped the 2022 telecast.
Lane Thomas led off on Saturday, after he’d hit mostly 6th or 7th in the Nationals’ lineup over the first few weeks of the 2022 campaign, and Washington skipper Davey Martinez moved César Hernández, who’d led off in each of the 16 games he’d played in early this season, to sixth.

“I just wanted to see if we could jumpstart Lane a little bit,” Martinez said when asked about the moves after the club’s 5-2 loss to the San Francisco Giants. “[Thomas] did well for us in the leadoff spot [in 2021]and also too when I talked to Cesar last night [we talked] about letting him relax a little bit and not trying to put so much pressure on him trying to get on base, and just swing the bat. And he did well today, they both did well, so we’ll see what happens tomorrow. I know we got a right-handed pitcher against us, I’m going to look at everything tonight, and then make a decision how we’re going to do that tomorrow.”

Hernández’s 2 for 4 game left him 17 for 73 (.233/.263/.274) so fat this season. Thomas went 1 for 4 with an RBI in the loss, leaving him 9 for 46 (.196/.255/.261) on the year.

Was the experiment on one-time thing, or a change Martinez will stick with for a while to try something new to spark Thomas, Hernández, and the lineup as a whole?

“We might do that,” he said. “Look, Lane hits left-handed pitchers really well, so it was nice to get him up there against the lefties and see if we can get two cracks at them, so I liked it. He hit a couple balls hard today so we’ll see what happens moving forward.”

Thomas’s hit, at the top of the order, was the only one for the Nationals’ first four+ hitters.

Thomas, Juan Soto, Nelson Cruz, and Josh Bell (who was injured and replaced by Lucius Fox early in the game) were a combined 1 for 15 in the loss. How do they turn it around?

“I think we need to just start relaxing … stay up the middle of the field. These guys are going to hit,” Martinez said. “These guys have hit their whole career, they’re going to hit, just don’t try to do too much, stay in the zone, and take your walks. I preach all the time, ‘Hey, take your walks, get on base for the next guy. Don’t chase.’ So, but I got all the confidence in the world that those guys will hit. If we continue to do what we’re doing in the bottom part of our lineup, we’re getting on base, I like that, so it’s just a matter of time before the whole lineup starts clicking, and we start scoring runs again. ”

As for Bell’s injury?

“He’s got right hamstring tightness, so we took him out,” the manager explained.

“He went to get an MRI and we’re waiting for him to get back with the results. I wanted to be cautious. With the other leg, with his knee.”

Bell is not in the lineup today. Maikel Franco is getting the start at first…
