Moving to San Francisco heralds an exciting chapter, filled with the promise of new opportunities and adventures. However, amidst the excitement, it’s essential to attend to practical matters, and one of the most critical aspects is adjusting your car insurance to meet the specific requirements and challenges of the city. San Francisco, with its sprawling urban landscape and diverse traffic conditions, necessitates a thoughtful and strategic approach to car insurance.

Understanding California’s Minimum Coverage Requirements

As a newcomer to California, it’s crucial to understand the state’s minimum auto insurance coverage requirements. As of January 2022, California mandates minimums of $15,000 for injury or death to one person, $30,000 for injury or death to multiple persons, and $5,000 for property damage. Get free quotes at IISinsurance.com to make sure you’re meeting or exceeding these minimums.

Considering Comprehensive Coverage

Given the potential risks such as accidents, theft, or damage, it’s advisable to consider comprehensive coverage. This type of coverage protects your vehicle from incidents like theft or natural disasters. Comprehensive coverage goes beyond the basics, providing a safety net in a city with diverse risk factors.

Exploring Additional Liability Coverage

While meeting the state’s minimum requirements is mandatory, it may be beneficial to explore higher liability limits. San Francisco has a higher cost of living compared to many other places, and accidents resulting in serious injuries or extensive property damage can lead to legal and financial challenges. Opting for higher liability limits provides an extra layer of protection, ensuring that you are adequately covered in the event of unforeseen circumstances.

Reviewing Deductibles

Your deductible is the amount you pay out of pocket before your insurance coverage kicks in. Adjusting your deductibles can impact your premium. Consider your budget and driving habits when choosing deductibles for comprehensive and collision coverage. While a higher deductible typically results in a lower premium, it’s essential to be comfortable with the potential out-of-pocket costs.

Shopping Around for Quotes

Insurance rates can vary significantly among providers, and shopping around for quotes is a proactive way to find the best coverage at a reasonable price. Reach out to multiple insurance companies, inquire about their offerings, and compare the quotes provided. Additionally, explore potential discounts you may be eligible for, such as multi-policy discounts or safe driver discounts.

Updating Your Address Promptly

Once you’ve successfully made the move to San Francisco, one of the first administrative tasks is to update your address with your insurance provider promptly. Your location can impact your premium, and providing an accurate address ensures that your coverage aligns with your new circumstances in the vibrant and diverse city.

Considering Usage-Based Insurance

For those who don’t plan to use their car extensively, exploring usage-based insurance options might be beneficial. Some insurance providers offer programs where your premium is based on your actual driving habits. If you’re adjusting to a more public transportation-oriented lifestyle in San Francisco, this could potentially result in significant cost savings.

Being Aware of Traffic and Parking Challenges

San Francisco is notorious for its traffic congestion and limited parking spaces. Being mindful of these challenges is crucial, as they can significantly influence your risk of accidents and theft. Additionally, if you have a garage or secure parking, it might positively impact your insurance rates, providing an added layer of security for your vehicle.

Maintaining a Clean Driving Record

Maintaining a clean driving record is pivotal for securing favorable insurance rates. Traffic violations and accidents can lead to increased premiums. Therefore, it’s essential to practice safe driving habits, adhere to traffic laws, and prioritize road safety to ensure a clean driving record in your new city.

Exploring Public Transportation Options

San Francisco boasts an extensive public transportation system, and depending on your proximity to work and lifestyle, considering public transportation as an alternative to driving could be a wise decision. Not only does this align with the city’s commitment to sustainability, but it could also potentially reduce your annual mileage, positively impacting insurance rates.

Effectively navigating the car insurance landscape in San Francisco demands a comprehensive and tailored approach. Understanding California’s insurance requirements, evaluating coverage options, and adapting your policy to align with the unique dynamics of the city are essential steps. By staying informed and proactive, you can ensure that your car insurance not only provides the necessary protection but also accommodates the nuances of life in the City of Angels. Whether you’re maneuvering through the bustling traffic or exploring the diverse neighborhoods, having the right car insurance is a key element in making your experience in San Francisco enjoyable and worry-free.

From Checking on Google and Reading Reviews to Looking at the Company’s Social Media Website and More, this Helpful Advice Will Help Homeowners Stay Warm in the Winter and Cool in the Summer

MOORESVILLE, N.C., July 13, 2023 /PRNewswire/ — Brian Pysz, co-owner of the HVAC repair company Peace Heating and Air Conditioning based in Mooresville, North Carolina, is pleased to announce that he has just posted a new blog to the company’s website that discusses an important topic: how to quickly find the best local air conditioner contractor.

To read the new blog in its entirety, please visit https://peaceheatingandairconditioning.com/2023/03/08/when-searching-for-air-conditioner-contractor-near-me-remember-peace-heating-and-air-conditioning/

As the blog notes, it is stressful for homeowners to realize that their heater or air conditioner is no longer functioning properly. In these cases, homeowners want to find reputable contractors quickly who are affordable and will correctly diagnose and fix the issue.

The first step to find a local heating and air conditioning contractor is to use a search engine.

“Type ‘air conditioner contractor near me’ into the search bar and press enter. The search engine will provide you with a list of local contractors in your area,” the blog notes, adding that first, homeowners should look for a licensed and certified contractor.

Once the list of potential contractors has been made, homeowners should visit their company websites and social media pages to learn more about their services.

Next, the blog advises, research each contractor’s online reviews.

“Check online reviews to see what other customers have said about the contractor’s service. Look for reviews on websites like Google, Yelp, the Better Business Bureau, and HomeAdvisor,” the blog notes.

“If a contractor has a lot of positive reviews, it is a good sign that they provide quality service.”

The Importance of Choosing the Right Local Moving Company in San Francisco

Relocating can be a daunting task, but partnering with a reputable local moving company in San Francisco can alleviate many of your concerns. Here’s why choosing the right office movers in San Francisco is crucial:

Familiarity with the Area

Local moving companies in San Francisco are well-versed in the city’s layout and traffic patterns. This knowledge allows them to plan efficient routes and navigate through the city’s challenging terrain.

Expertise and Experience

Experienced office movers in San Francisco like A2B Movers have the knowledge and skills to handle your belongings with care. They understand the intricacies of packing, loading, and unloading in tight urban spaces.

Reliability

Local moving companies depend on their reputation within the community, which means they are more likely to provide exceptional service and take extra precautions to protect your belongings.

San Francisco Relocation Tips from Local Moving Experts

Plan Ahead

Start planning your move well in advance. Create a detailed checklist, set a budget, and schedule your move with a local moving company in San Francisco as early as possible to secure your preferred date.

Declutter

Take this opportunity to declutter your home or office. Donate, sell, or dispose of items you no longer need. This reduces the cost of your move and minimizes clutter in your new space.

Pack Smart

Proper packing is essential. Label boxes clearly, and consider color-coding them by room. Fragile items should be packed with extra care, and valuable items should be documented.

Protect Your Belongings

A2B Movers San Francisco offers packing materials that can help protect your belongings during transit. Invest in quality packing supplies to minimize the risk of damage.

Communicate with Your Movers

Maintain open communication with your local moving company. Discuss any specific requirements or concerns you may have, such as handling delicate equipment or navigating narrow streets.

Prepare for Moving Day

Ensure that you have parking arrangements in place for the moving truck. Reserve parking permits if necessary, especially in areas with limited parking.

Stay Organized

Keep important documents, keys, and essentials in a separate bag or box so that they’re easily accessible when you arrive at your new location.

Conclusion

Relocating in San Francisco doesn’t have to be a stressful experience. By partnering with a reliable local moving company in San Francisco like A2B Movers, you can take advantage of their expertise and local knowledge to make your move efficient and smooth. Remember to plan ahead, pack smart, and communicate effectively with your movers to ensure a successful relocation.
PENSACOLA, Fla. (WKRG) — One thing you don’t want to happen during this heat wave is for your air conditioning to go out.

WKRG spoke with experts at Diamond Air Design in Pensacola and they said they’ve already had more than 150 service calls this month.

“It always increases. When it starts to get hot that’s when your systems get running longer. So you got longer run times the chances for things to break down, especially older equipment that’s when you see those start to struggle,” said Louis McVay, service manager at Diamond Air Design.

City holds ‘pop up’ event to get input on Pensacola’s Active Transportation Plan

One thing experts recommend, keeping your thermostat within four degrees of your ideal temperature at all times.

“If you go over four degrees, and your trying to cool that house back, and its built up a lot of heat over the day, you know the hot part of the day, then when you come home that thing is running even longer trying to get back to a comfortable temp,” explained McVay. “It’s better to keep it closer to a moderate temp as what’s comfortable to you, that way the systems turning on and turning off regularly, so it’s less bind on the equipment.”

McVay also recommended calling a technician before summer starts, so they can look for weak or outdated parts, saving you money in the long run.

“The amount of energy it takes to run on old, worn-out parts, you can get that system back to somewhat new condition by changing those parts and that will definitely help in the long run,” said McVay.

They also recommend periodically rinsing your unit off and making sure you’re using the correct filters for your system.

By Doug Milnes

Now that summer’s officially started, many people are looking forward to much-needed vacations. However, with travel costs on the rise, finding an affordable Airbnb has become both a puzzle and an art. To help you in your search for cost-saving summer rentals, MoneyGeek analyzed data for over 200,000 Airbnb listings across 19 U.S. vacation hotspots and explored how location, party size, amenities and room type impact costs.

Key findings

Among the 19 U.S. travel destinations analyzed, the median price of an Airbnb is $154 per night. Hawaii listings have the highest median nightly cost ($294), while Portland, Oregon, offers the most affordable accommodations ($100).

By choosing a private room, instead of a full home or apartment, you could cut your costs in half. A little extra privacy will cost you an additional $70 in a one-bedroom rental.

While higher-capacity rooms tend to be more expensive, larger groups may experience more savings overall. When pitching in to rent a unit with a group of four, expect to save around 17% per person compared to a group of two.

Access to fitness equipment or a pool will increase the cost of your stay by nearly 50%. In cities like New York, you could even pay double for rentals that offer these amenities.

MoneyGeek

How Airbnb prices vary across top tourist destinations

The research found that the median cost of an Airbnb across 19 popular U.S. travel destinations is $154 per night. However, where you travel significantly impacts the cost of your vacation accommodations. The price of a room on the sun-soaked shores of Hawaii is the highest among the locations the study analyzed at $294. Nashville was home to the second-most expensive rentals, with a median nightly cost of $198, followed by San Diego ($186).

The analysis also found that the way prices fluctuate based on the total capacity of rentals differs depending on your location. For example, while Nashville took the second spot for the highest overall Airbnb costs, San Francisco and New Orleans tied for the second-most expensive accommodations for 1-2 travelers; in New Orleans and San Francisco, renting a smaller-sized Airbnb will typically set you back $110 per night, while it costs just $90 in Nashville.

Across the U.S., Airbnbs that accommodate 3-4 people are typically 66% more expensive than those that accommodate 1-2 guests. This price increase is highest in Las Vegas’ Clark County, where travelers pay twice as much for these larger accommodations.

The table compares Airbnb prices across 19 major U.S. tourist destinations by median nightly cost overall and for different unit capacities.

The study also broke down nightly median accommodation costs for the three most populated cities in the country: New York, Los Angeles and Chicago.

The premium for personal space is $70: How less privacy can lead to more savings on Airbnb

Imagine having an entire Airbnb to yourself — a private retreat where you can spread out, enjoy uninterrupted relaxation and experience the luxury of complete solitude. While the appeal is undeniable, this level of personal space comes with a premium price tag, often leading guests to pay more for the privilege of privacy.

For more personal space in a one-bedroom Airbnb rental, visitors can expect to pay roughly $70 more. The study calculated this expense by comparing the median prices of entire homes or apartments ($145 per night) and private rooms ($75 per night). By giving up a little privacy, you could see savings of nearly 50%. If you’re seeking even cheaper alternatives, rentals with shared bathrooms are available at just $60 a night.

<img decoding="async" src="https://i0.wp.com/static.stacker.com/s3fs-public/2023-07/how-airbnb-prices-change-with-amenities.png?w=780&ssl=1" alt="A bar chart showing the average rate of increase in prices for Airbnb listings with various amenities, including beach or pool access, gym access, and a dishwasher." title="Planning to swim or work out?
Planning to swim or work out? Expect to pay nearly 50% more

Airbnb pricing doesn’t just hinge on location — amenities like beach, pool and gym access also wield considerable influence.

Our analysis compared median prices of rentals with specific amenities to those without and found that listings with beach access are 61% more expensive.

Pool availability is the second-most expensive amenity, costing vacationers 48% more. But this cost increase isn’t the same everywhere: for instance, the cost of rentals with pool access skyrockets to more than twice the usual rate (125%) in New York City.

Fitness enthusiasts looking for gym access can expect around a 47% increase in booking costs. In Portland, Oregon, the price tag on rentals with gym access goes up by 84%.

You’ll also likely pay a premium if there’s a dishwasher in your rental unit; Airbnbs with dishwashers typically cost 21% more than those without them.

Tips to save on your Airbnb bookings

It’s no secret that traveling today is expensive. The researchers recommend following these cost-saving tips when looking for Airbnb accommodations to enjoy the vacation you want without breaking the bank.

1. Boost your party size.

A group of four can anticipate 17% savings per person compared to pairs. On average, a 2-person unit charges $105 per night, while accommodating four nudges the price up by 65% to $173 — letting you entertain twice as many folks for less.

2. Opt for private rooms or units with shared bathrooms.

The cost of renting a full home averages $185 per night, while a private room or a shared-bathroom unit only costs $79 or $60 per night, respectively.

3. Embrace washing dishes by hand.

Dishwasher-equipped units demand a 21% premium. In Hawaii, you may even find yourself paying 85% more for rentals with dishwashers. Opting for accommodations without a dishwasher could lead to significant savings.

4. Utilize credit cards.

Familiarize yourself with the benefits of travel credit cards and reward credit cards to make your money work for you. Between welcome offers, cash back rewards and opportunities to accumulate points and miles, there are many ways you can utilize credit cards to make your vacation cost-effective.

Methodology

The study analyzed data from Inside Airbnb to provide insights on Airbnb costs in 19 U.S. tourist destinations and offer tips for maximizing savings on Airbnb bookings.

The study examined several data points, such as price, location, unit capacity, available amenities and room type. Then, the study calculated median rates across these variables to demonstrate how prices vary by location.

The study also applied a linear regression model to the data and used Shap feature importance to identify the amenities with the highest impact on price. To calculate the percentage impact of amenities on price, the study compared the median prices of listings with a specific amenity to those without it.

Spring is a season of renewal, but it’s also a time when homes in our area need extra attention after the winter months. Because of this, it’s important to take preventative steps to ensure your home is spring-ready, no matter where you live or if it’s spring Huntington Beach, California, Anchorage, AK or anywhere in between. By following these tasks, you can identify and fix potential problems before they become bigger problems. This ensures that your home is in optimal condition for the coming season.

Clean gutters and downspouts

Cleaning your gutters and downspouts is an essential part of maintaining your home’s exterior. During the winter, dirt and moss can collect in your gutters and downspouts, causing clogs that can cause water damage to your home’s foundation and walls. This can lead to costly repairs and weaken the overall structure of your home. To clean your gutters and downspouts, first remove any coarse residue by hand. Then use a hose to flush out any remaining residue, making sure the water is flowing freely through the downspouts. You can also use a special gutter cleaning tool or hire a professional to do the job.

Check windows and doors

Gaps and cracks in windows and doors allow cold air to enter your home, leading to increased energy bills and uncomfortable draughts. Check the seals and weatherstripping around windows and doors and replace any that are damaged or worn. This simple task can improve energy efficiency and make your home more comfortable during the colder months.

Service your HVAC system

As spring approaches, it’s important to have your heating and cooling system serviced by a professional. Properly maintaining your HVAC system not only reduces the risk of sudden failures, but also improves energy efficiency. A well-maintained HVAC system will save you money on your energy bills and prevent costly repairs in the future. During maintenance, the technician will inspect and clean system components, lubricate all moving parts, and replace any worn parts.

Check and clean your chimney

If you have a wood burning fireplace or stove, it is important that your chimney is checked and cleaned regularly. Over time, creosote can build up on the walls of your chimney and pose a fire hazard. A professional chimney sweep can remove all creosote deposits, keeping your chimney working safely and efficiently. A clean chimney can also improve your indoor air quality by preventing harmful gases from entering your home. In addition, during the inspection, the technician will check for any cracks or damage that could affect the functioning of your chimney, which can save you from costly repairs in the future.

Examine the roof

Check your roof for damage, including missing shingles, leaks, or cracks. If you find anything, make sure you fix the problems before they become bigger problems. Consider hiring a professional to inspect your roof and make any necessary repairs. This can save you money in the long run by preventing water damage and extending the life of your roof.

Clean the outside

Washing the outside of your home is an excellent way to remove accumulated dirt and grime that has built up over time, ensuring your home’s appeal is maintained. You can use a pressure washer, which is extremely effective at removing stubborn stains from various surfaces, such as trim, windows, and doors. Alternatively, hiring a professional to do the work is a convenient way to ensure the work is done to a high standard. A thorough exterior cleaning not only improves the aesthetics of your home, but also protects it from the elements and extends its lifespan.

Test smoke and carbon monoxide alarms

Testing your smoke and carbon monoxide alarms is an essential part of keeping your family safe. By regularly testing and replacing the batteries in these detectors, you can be alerted in the event of a fire or carbon monoxide leak, allowing you to take appropriate action to protect loved ones. It is recommended that you test your smoke alarms at least once a month and replace the batteries annually. Carbon monoxide alarms should also be tested regularly to ensure they are working properly.

Check your sprinkler system

Spring is a good time to check your sprinkler system, especially if you haven’t used it for a while. First, check that the water pressure is adequate and adjust if necessary. Then inspect each sprinkler head to make sure it is not damaged or clogged, which could affect water distribution. If you notice problems, replace the damaged sprinkler head or unclog it. You should also adjust the direction of each sprinkler head to ensure water reaches the designated areas and is not wasted on sidewalks or driveways. A properly functioning sprinkler system can help keep your lawn and garden healthy and vibrant all season long, saving you money and effort in the long run.

By taking the time to inspect and maintain your home, you can prevent potential damage and costly repairs in the future. These simple steps can help get your home ready for spring and summer and keep you and your family feeling comfortable and secure. So don’t wait until it’s too late. Get active now and enjoy the beauty of the season with peace of mind.

To make your move smooth and stress-free, we’ve put together the best tips for moving to San Mateo.

Moving to San Mateo opens up a world of possibilities. However, before embarking on this adventure, it’s important to gather information about the city and plan your move carefully.
Exploration of San Mateo

Before making the move, it’s important to do a thorough research on San Mateo. Familiarize yourself with the city’s neighborhoods, schools, healthcare facilities, transportation options, and local amenities. This allows you to identify the areas that match your preferences and needs.

Find an apartment

One of the most important aspects of moving is finding a suitable place to live. Consider factors such as proximity to work, schools, parks, and shopping malls. Find out about the local real estate market, connect with reputable real estate agents and explore online platforms to find the perfect house or apartment for your needs.

Hiring professional moving companies

To simplify your moving process, you should consider hiring professional movers. They have the experience, expertise and resources to efficiently handle the logistics of your move. Research and compare different movers, read customer reviews, and get quotes to find a reliable and affordable option.

Pack and organize

Start packing early and proceed systematically. Tidy up your belongings, donate or sell items you no longer need, and label your boxes to make unpacking easier. Pack fragile items carefully and consider using cushioning material to protect them during transit.

Notify important parties

To ensure a smooth transition, let key parties know about your upcoming move. This includes notifying your employer, updating your address at the post office, notifying your bank and credit card companies, and forwarding your medical records to new healthcare providers.

Update your address

Updating your address is crucial for a smooth move. Be sure to change your address on official documents such as your driver’s license, car registration number, and voter registration. Also, update your address with online platforms, subscription services and all relevant memberships.

Transfer Utilities

Contact your utility providers such as electricity, water, gas, internet and cable to arrange for services to be moved to your new address. Make sure the utilities are in place and operational prior to your move-in date to avoid any inconvenience.

Settling into your new home

Upon arrival in San Mateo, take the time to settle into your new home. Unpack your things, arrange the furniture and make your living space comfortable. Familiarize yourself with the property’s amenities and get to know your neighbors. This will make you feel more comfortable in your new surroundings.

Explore San Mateo

San Mateo offers a range of attractions and activities to explore. Visit Central Park, Coyote Point Recreation Area or the Sawyer Camp Trail for outdoor adventures. Discover the vibrant city center with its diverse gastronomic offers, unique shops and cultural events. Take advantage of the city’s proximity to San Francisco and Silicon Valley and explore the surrounding areas as well.

Search for essential services

When arriving in San Mateo, it is important to find the main services. Research and find nearby health facilities, grocery stores, pharmacies, and other services you may need on a regular basis. Familiarize yourself with local public transport and find the nearest bus or train station.

By interacting with the community, you can meet new people, make friends, and build a support network in your new city.

Adaptation to the weather

San Mateo has a mild Mediterranean climate with warm summers and cool winters. However, the weather can vary throughout the year. Prepare your wardrobe accordingly and be prepared for foggy mornings and occasional downpours. To adapt to the climate in San Mateo, layered clothing and a light jacket are recommended.

Find new friends

Moving to a new city can be an opportunity to expand your social circle. Attend local meetups, join hobby or interest groups, and participate in activities that match your interests. Getting involved out there increases your chances of meeting like-minded people and making new friends.

We’re all aware of the cliché that moving is one of the most stressful life tasks you can do – and unfortunately for many of us, this cliché usually proves to be true. As such, a checklist for moving into a new house can be enormously helpful, signaling the most important tasks to tick off during the entire process and taking the added stress of remembering everything yourself away.

Moving house – whether you’re buying, renting, moving across the country, or relocating locally – is a life step full of lots of mini tasks. Not only are you reckoning with the emotional weight of leaving one home for another, but you also have to consider the logistic components of moving too, such as packing, changing your address, cleaning and redirecting your mail.

Enter the ultimate moving house checklist. Ticking these home organizing ideas off of your to-do list in the weeks (and months) leading up to moving day will ensure that you can rest easy knowing that you’ve covered all the essentials – and on time, too. With tips and guidance from moving and organizing experts, this is your foolproof checklist for moving into a new home.

Checklist for moving into a new house

Though there will be some tasks specific to your move, most of the below items on this moving house checklist are things that every mover will need to complete, meaning they’re important to take note of. However, if any don’t apply, simply tweak the list to your requirements.

As soon as the move is confirmed

1. Begin to declutter

Though it may seem too early, as soon as contracts have been exchanged and you have your move-in date, it’s a great time to get started with your moving house checklist. And the very first step, experts explain, is to begin decluttering your home, for a clean slate in your new property.

‘As soon as you know you’re going to be moving, start removing anything you don’t want or need,’ professional organizer Felice Cohen said. ‘Take it one section at a time, and as you go through items, ask yourself, ‘Do I want this taking up space in my new place?’

Though it may seem overwhelming, it pays to do this now in more ways than one. Mary Jo Contello, owner of Organized by MJ, said, ‘You don’t want to pay someone to pack and move items you do not want. Consider that you should only plan to move items that you need, want, and that fit, to the next place.’ If you struggle with getting rid of things, perhaps these decluttering tips can help – or these insights into how professional organizers declutter to move.

2. Take measurements of your new home

As long as the current tenants/owners don’t mind, this is a great time to measure up your new home to make sure that your existing furniture fits into its relevant room. Measure the space for the most essential pieces first, such as beds, wardrobes, sofas and desks.

And if you find that some things don’t fit, you should have plenty of time to order new pieces before moving day.

Two months before your move

3. Organize and schedule movers

Two months out from a move is a very reasonable amount of notice to give if you’re looking to hire a professional removal company for your relocation. Ian A. Imlach, VP of Business Development at moving company Imlach Group, said, ‘Get estimates from a few different moving companies (if you’re wondering how much it costs to hire movers, it may not be as pricey as you think).’ This is especially important during the summer months, as many movers are booked out a month or more.”

Or, if you’re keen to move yourself, now is the time to figure out how much van space you will need, and start getting quotes for the necessary moving vehicle.

However, Ryan Carrigan, CEO of MoveBuddha, explained that hiring movers can take a lot of stress off of your plate. ‘My biggest tip for people who are looking to move is to be willing to get a professional, especially for a larger job – as they will understand how to make the process quicker.’

When discussing options with moving companies, be sure to give them an accurate picture of the size of your current and future property, as well as the number of items you need to move, to avoid being caught out price-wise.

4. Start packing non-essential items

It might seem too soon to begin packing, but squirreling away any non-essential items now will be something you thank yourself for in the days before your moving date.

Life organizer Debra Baida, founder of Liberated Spaces, suggests tackling ‘infrequently used items, and things you don’t plan to use before the move.’ This might include items such as ‘books, special occasion tableware, photographs and memorabilia, seasonal clothing (that will be out of season when you move), and holiday decorations.’

If you want, she even suggests taking down decorative items at this time, to really get ahead of schedule. ‘If you are comfortable with visible shelves, and wall space looking a little more spartan than usual, this is a good time to pack decorative household items, tchotchkes, and artwork,’ says Debra.

5. Book your annual leave

Many of us will need to take at least some time off to deal with a house move, so now is the time to request that annual leave in order to make sure everyone involved has enough notice. If your move-in date falls in the middle of the week, consider that you may need more than one day away from work, especially if you are moving cross-country.

6. Start planning how to use up opened items

Try to avoid taking any already-open items to your new property, especially when it comes to food or toiletries.

Not only will this give you less ‘stuff’ to move, but it’ll also save you from any accidental spills during the move itself. Felice explained that; ‘Toiletries and food can spill, leak or attract insects,’ which isn’t ideal as you settle into a new home! This might mean finally using up that old facial serum or the packet of lentils that have been sitting in your kitchen for months.

1 month before your move

7. Order any essential moving supplies

If you’re wondering how much it costs to move, there’s no doubt that it’s a pricey process. And part of that cost comes in making sure you have everything you need to actually pack your items. At this point, make sure you have all the essentials to hand, such as packing tape, sturdy moving boxes, sticky labels, permanent markers for writing onto said labels and bubble wrap – and order them in if not.

Emily Speed, professional organizer and owner of The Organized Home Mindset shared one of her top packing tricks, suggesting that you invest in clear bins instead of boxes for regularly used items.

‘Clear boxes will enable you to locate items quickly, and it will look and feel less overwhelming in the new space when it comes to unpacking.’

Emily Speed

8. Make a list of people to notify of your move

With just four weeks until you’re out of your current property, it’s important to put together a list of people/organizations who need to know that you’re moving. This might include your workplace, your bank, household service providers (such as gardeners or cleaners), and any organizations you or your family might be a part of, such as sports clubs.

You don’t need to actually ‘tell’ these people just yet, but putting together a list will be infinitely helpful for you to refer to closer to your moving date. However, you may want to inform any family members and friends you haven’t yet told now, to ensure they don’t deliver any further posts to you!

9. Start packing more of your items

Three to four weeks before moving is the ideal time to seriously begin your packing process. Sarah Schier, the owner of the home-organizing company Beautiful Life Creative Organizing, admits that while it may feel early, doing so is incredibly helpful when tackling such a big job.

‘Starting early gives you sufficient time to sort through your belongings, declutter, and pack efficiently without feeling rushed or stressed. It also allows you to create an inventory and label your boxes properly, making unpacking easier at your new home,’ she said.

Go room-by-room, packing less important items first, and more of your daily essentials as your move gets closer.

Sarah Schier

She helps busy professionals and families to create beautifully organized homes and specializes in Relocation Management, where she oversees each client’s entire move, including unpacking and organizing their new home.

10. Put together a moving binder

Of vital importance in your moving house checklist is arranging all of the relevant documents that moving requires. As such, Ian advises that you should ‘definitely keep a binder or digital file of all essential documents – staying organized is a big factor in keeping the stress down.’

Assemble all relevant paperwork, such as insurance papers, contracts, an inventory if you are renting your current property, and any useful receipts. You never know when you might need them all!

This binder can also hold all of your important paperwork for your new home when you get there, such as your first bills, and any mail from the former tenants/owners that you may need to forward.

2 weeks before your move

11. Label boxes according to your new home

With packing well underway, Felice explains that now is the time to make sure your boxes are labeled accurately, so you can easily locate any items before moving and after.

Her top tip? ‘Label the box of the room the item is going to, not from. This minimizes confusion, and ensures that heavy items are moved only once.’ She also suggests that it pays to be cautious with your labeling, especially if you’ll be without your belongings for a time. She said, ‘Don’t write “valuable” or words like “TV” on boxes – this could invite theft. Just write “fragile”, instead.’

12. Pack kitchen items you don’t use regularly

Mary Jo explained that ‘the kitchen typically takes the most time to pack’, so putting away items you don’t use as often two weeks ahead of time is a valuable forward-planning tip.

And it’s likely that there are plenty of items in this room that you don’t use on a day-to-day basis. Sarah elaborated that this may include ‘infrequently used appliances, special occasion dishes, and extra kitchenware,’ as well as deep cleaning items, or bottles of alcohol.

13. Investigate home insurance

Take a moment to organize your home insurance policy at this point – speak to your current supplier to see whether you can move your policy over to your new property, or whether you’ll need to take out a new one with a different supplier for your area.

You’ll also want to make sure you are covered in your new home from day one.

14. Move items into storage if necessary

If for any reason your move requires putting items into storage, now is the time to do so!

Not only will moving these items out of your home create more room for packing, but it’ll also give you more headspace to consider which items are actually moving along with you, and which can be thrown out/donated beforehand.

One week before your move

15. Pack important items you want to keep an eye on

There are many precious items that you’ll want to keep track of as you move between homes, to avoid damages, losses, or even the potential for theft. Because of this, pack these with just a week to go, so you know where they are at all times.

In fact, Sarah even advises, ‘Pack important documents, jewelry, and valuable items separately from everything else, and transport them yourself for added security.’ If you’re planning to move any houseplants, you may also want to keep these separate.

16. Box up those remaining items

The final week before your move is the time to pack away the rest of your household items. To break this down, this means boxing up almost all of your kitchen items, aside from the basics that you’ll need to prepare meals – such as saucepans, a range of utensils, a few glasses and mugs, and some cutlery.

This is also the time to focus on your wardrobe, Sarah said. ‘With a week to go, except for a few outfits, pack the majority of your wardrobe, keeping in mind the season and weather conditions at your destination.’ See our guide for how to fold shirts to ensure yours are kept in tip-top condition during the move.

And when it comes to the bathroom? ‘Pack most of your toiletries, leaving out only the essentials for personal hygiene in the days leading up to the move, such as toothpaste, shampoos, and soap,’ she advised.

The day before your move

17. Put together a bag of essentials

The days after your big move will probably be slightly chaotic. As such, one brilliant tip for your checklist for moving into a new house is to pack a suitcase containing only the key items you’ll need in the days after getting settled into your new home.

‘Pack everyone’s pajamas, toothbrushes, bed sheets, blankets, pillows and a couple of outfits, to make the first night and next morning less stressful,’ Felice said. You might even want to pack things that you’ll need in the days following the move, such as laptops, make-up and medications, to ensure that anything important is easily accessible without wading through a mass of boxes!

18. Action your change of address

Remember that list you jotted down weeks ago as part of your moving house checklist? Now is the time to action it, and notify all relevant parties of your change of address.

For example, get in touch with your new doctor’s office, optometrists, gym, and your new town council. Notify neighbors of your imminent departure too – not only to say your goodbyes but also so that they can collect any mail you might miss.

19. Clean your new home

With everything packed away in boxes, it’s the perfect time to clean what will largely be a clear, open space.

Take a few hours to scrub down what will soon be your former home, in order to ensure everything is in as good a condition as possible for its new tenants or owners. This is especially vital when renting, given that tenants are required to return the property to the original state they received it in.

FAQs

What is the first thing to do when moving?

Though this may be different for lots of people, many of the experts Homes & Gardens spoke to insisted that the first step when a house move is confirmed (aside from signing legal contracts!) is to declutter your current space.

Sarah said, “This is my number one tip for everyone! Take the opportunity to declutter and donate or discard items you no longer need. Moving is a great time to start fresh. Don’t waste time and money by moving things you’re going to end up getting rid of in the new house.”

It’s also one of the first things you should do when you know you are moving, as it’s likely to be one of the longest processes. Throwing things out can be difficult, so getting started with it as your first job should give you plenty of time to get it done, pre-move.

How early to start packing for a move

It’s subjective, but most organization professionals agree that you probably don’t need to physically start putting items into boxes until a couple of weeks before your move-in date.

‘The perfect move can be planned out about two months before your move-in date, but you don’t need to start packing until you are 2-3 weeks out, in my opinion,’ Ryan said. However, Sarah suggests getting started 4-6 weeks before your move-in date – so there is no one right answer.

There are pros and cons to both. Packing earlier means there will be no last-minute rush. It may also be a beneficial option if you are generally kept very busy with day-to-day life. However, packing six weeks ahead of your move also means you run the risk of being hindered by boxes as you continue to live in your home. Keeping items in their place until two weeks before your move will mean fewer interruptions like this, but will also require a faster packing process. The choice is yours!

How do I pack my house for moving?

The key to packing your home up in a way that isn’t too overwhelming is to take everything a step at a time. It can help to consider packing in this way:

Go room-by-room: This will help to ensure you tackle packing with a measured approach. ‘Focusing on one room at a time will help maintain organization, and prevent items from getting mixed up,’ Sarah said. Why not start with rooms you use less (such as basements, offices, or guest rooms), moving onto essential rooms like your bedroom and kitchens, last?

Package similar items together: It can also be helpful to ensure your moving boxes contain similar items, to minimize confusion when you get to your new home. Don’t be tempted to lump your office supplies in with your clothing, for example! As you’ll only be darting from room to room when you move, to unpack everything in the right place.

Moving home isn’t a quick process, but there are ways to make the entire thing easier on you and your family.

One of our favorite additional tips? Pack items in the container they already live in. Christina Giaquinto, professional organizer and brand ambassador of Modular Closets, suggests for example, “Leave your clothes on hangers! This will help you easily move your clothes from the old house to the new house.”

The same applies to other clothes – if they already exist in organizers, for example, don’t be afraid to pack them this way. It’ll make unpacking much simpler!

NILES, Ohio (WKBN) – Winters in Northeast Ohio often bring cold, wet, and frozen conditions that are here to stay. This weather makes it difficult to protect homes from damage.

Melvin Tenney, branch manager at Handyman Supply in Niles, said now is the time to check your home so it’s protected from the elements during the winter.

Crews battle five major floods in 24 hours at Mahoning Co.; some without water

“Make sure all your shingles are tight, make sure you seal a leak if you have a leak,” he said.

Tenney said all homeowners should have their furnace inspected, checked for leaks and have your driveway sealed.

“You want to make sure your cracks are filled, the driveway is sealed — on these driveways, new and old, you want to use salt, which isn’t harmful, which is calcium,” he said.

Spending more now to winterize your home could save you thousands of dollars in the long run.

“We’ve seen burst pipes account for thousands of dollars in insurance claims per homeowner each year, which can be $5,000 or more,” said Sarah Dillingham of the Insurance Institute for Business and Home Security.

Tenney said you should insulate these pipes to prevent cracking.

“You can do foam insulation or wrap, even heat tape. Depending on your circumstances, there are different costs there,” he said.

Insulation materials are available at any local hardware store – and if you decide to take a holiday trip there are a few things you can do in advance to ensure your Christmas party doesn’t end in disaster.

“Make sure you don’t turn your thermostat too low while you’re away, you should make sure it’s not set lower than 55 degrees to ensure the pipes around your house stay warmer,” Dillingham said.

Gas prices in November fell, but they’re still the highest since AAA began recording data 20 years ago and are about 51 cents more expensive than a year ago.

That means the 6.3 million Californians planning to travel by car this week will pay the price, only at a slight discount from this summer’s peak of $6.438 a gallon.

AAA tracks fuel prices as a public service, and spokesman Julian Paredes said the increase in travelers was 2% higher than in 2021.

“And that’s a record, that’s more travelers than before the pandemic,” Paredes said.

For travelers looking to fly this holiday season, San Francisco International Airport’s public information officer Doug Yakel said the airport is forecasting 5 million travelers for the past week leading up to New Year’s Day. Yakel said about 85% of this year’s expected travelers are from 2019.

For those driving rather than flying this week, AAA is advising travelers to check their fluids, tire pressures, vehicle repair kit and battery charger, and make sure they have extra snacks and water. Another piece of advice is to leave early as traffic delays can be expected.

“There will be a lot of people out there and pretty much every freeway will be full. It’s definitely smart to take more time to travel than at any other time of the year,” Paredes said.

AAA expects over 400,000 roadside assistance calls nationwide this week, he added.

Peak tourist traffic will be on Wednesday from 8am to 8pm, and for the rest of the week 4pm to 8pm will be the rush hour.

While traffic this week could slow drivers, prices at the pump are better than in recent months, Paredes said, as gasoline prices in California fell about 58 cents in the last month.

Officer Judith Bryant directs traffic at San Francisco International Airport.

Nick Rose/Daily Journal

“Gas prices in San Mateo County are $5.33 a gallon for regular gasoline,” Paredes said. “That’s about 13 cents above the average for California right now, and California has the highest prices in the country.”

The national average, by comparison, is $3.63 per gallon, he added.

The price of a barrel of crude oil is $81.51 and has fluctuated between $80 and $90 a barrel over the last month.

Who is planning to go to the airport, the parking garage is busy, so for travelers who want to drive there and park their car. Yakel suggests reserving parking passes on FlySFO.com to ensure parking is available.

“We recommend being at the airport two hours before your flight for domestic flights and three hours for international flights,” Yakel said.

Yakel recommends downloading the airline’s app to check baggage online and use TSA Precheck to save time and waiting.
