SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) — After a respite from the rain, another wave of precipitation is expected to drop on the San Francisco Bay Area beginning Thursday. Up to 2 inches of rain is expected in lower elevations of the Bay Area and Central Coast through the weekend, according to the National Weather Service.

There is potential for rain totals to be greater than 2 inches in higher elevations such as the North Bay mountains and Santa Cruz Mountains, weather officials said. The rainfall will come in periods of light to moderate precipitation starting Thursday and lasting through Sunday.

The winds will also pick up during the rainy weather, with westerly wind gusts forecasted to reach 30 to 40 miles per hour in the Bay Area and Central Coast. The highest gusts will be in the mountains and along the coast, NWS said. The breezy conditions are expected to last between Thursday and Saturday.

Bay Area city named happiest in America: study

Impacts from the rain and wind could come in the form of downed tree branches, isolated power outages, slower commute times, ponding of water on roadways and rises in creeks and streams, according to officials.

Escaping from the rain and heading to the Sierra is “highly discouraged,” as a blizzard warning has been issued, and travel in the area “will be nearly impossible,” weather service officials said. “Driving conditions will deteriorate rapidly Friday-Saturday AM with white-out conditions & near-zero visibility from this dangerous winter storm,” NWS Sacramento posted to X, formerly Twitter.

Up to 10 feet of snow is forecasted to fall in Sierra elevations above 5,000 feet, and up to 4 feet of snow in areas above 3,000 feet. Wind gusts could reach up to 65 miles per hour.

TUESDAY

The Knights clinched third place and a spot in the PAL CCS play-in game next week with their win over the Ravens.

Josiah Yeager extended his record-setting setting season with five more goals for Hillsdale (8-3 PAL Bay, 12-7) overall. Isaiah Yeager added three goals and two assists, while Hudson Yates tallied twice.

Half Moon Bay 3, Sequoia 0

Half Moon Bay beat Sequoia 25-16, 25-16, 25-12

Gabby Harrison recorded 14 kills for the HMB (2-10 PAL Bay, 10-18 overall) to up her team-high total of 83 while Ava Cardiel added nine kills and eight digs of her own. Aliya Wicks also dropped 27 assists as the Cougars pick up their second straight victory after dropping the previous four.

Sequoia falls to 9-15 in Bay play and 3-9 overall.

Menlo Atherton 3, Burlingame 2

The Bears have yet to drop a match within league play, but the Panthers came the closest of anyone on Tuesday as M-A held on for a 25-20, 13-25, 25-19, 19-25, 15-12.

Dani Eline and Duru Ruacan both had 15 kills for M-A (12-0, 18-6) while Ruacan also added three aces. Burlingame (10-2, 17-5) has only two league losses, both coming at the hands of M-A as they now move to two games back with two matches left to play.

Sophie Rubinstein lead the way again for the Dons with 13 kills to increase her season total to 326 in a 25-18, 25-17, 25-16 win.

Her teammate, senior Kathleen Suayan, also stood out with 16 digs and three aces of her own for Aragon (9-3, 19-12). The Dons sit just a game behind Burlingame in the standings with the two schools set to matchup on October 24.

San Mateo falls to 4-8 in division play and 16-12 overall.

The Fighting Knights distributed the wealth in their hard fought win against the Scots, 27-25, 25-21, 21-25, 10-25, 15-12.

Junior Natasha Abbaszadeh led the way offensively for Hillsdale (3-9, 7-16) with 19 kills and 11 digs. Allison Khau, another junior, added 23 digs while freshman Ella Schaumkel tallied 11 kills and seven aces of her own.

Carlmont falls to 5-7 in the Bay and 13-13 overall.

Senior Nevaeh Davidson recorded five kills and 14 digs for the Warriors while junior Audrina Lopez added 22 digs of her own but the second-place, Wildcats who’ve only dropped one league match all season, reigned victorious.

Woodside improves to 11-1 in Ocean play and 15-8 overall. South City falls to 3-9, 8-18.

The first-place Colts got back in the win column after dropping a non-league match against Rio Americano of Sacramento this past Saturday. El Camino (11-1, 19-5) hasn’t dropped a league match since Sept. 14 when they fell to Woodside.

Jefferson drops to 1-11 in division play and 25-11 overall.

The Vikings also got back into the win column themselves after dropping their previous five matches against a mix of league and non-league competition. They beat the Tiger, 25-18, 26-24, 25-17.

After dropping their first six matches of the season, the Vikings have responded strongly with an 8-4 mark through Ocean Division play. and find themselves in third place in the Ocean Division.

Mills is 12-7 overall, while Terra Nova falls to 6-6, 7-15.

The Mustangs swept the Rams in three sets, 25-11, 25-13, 25-11 to stay in fourth place, a game behind Mills.

Capuchino improves to 7-5 in the Ocean and 11-12 overall. Westmoor falls to 1-11, 2-23.

The Mustangs also improve to 6-4 overall on the road, better than their 3-6 home mark and 2-2 neutral.

Menlo Atherton 5, Hillsdale 2

Hayley Maravillas and Maya Wu got the Fighting Knights (2-11) on the board in singles with a 3-6, 6-4, 11-9 and 6-4, 6-0 victories respectively, but the Bears (11-2) proved to be too much on the doubles side taking all three matches. The duo of Jiaqui Zhang and Emma Yuen, and Nia Sarzadeh and Sohia Jobst for the Bears swept their days clean with a pair of 6-0, 6-0 victories to lead the way.

Anna He, Lian Wang and Taylor Lee all picked up victories for the Dons (8-5) in singles while Mia Farber responded with a victory of her own for the Wildcats (2-11). In doubles, the Dons swept their way to victory with Jessalyn Williams and Kat Russell, and Maddy Fong and Mana Ueno picking up their wins in straight sets.

Lead by the Mulready sisters in singles, the Panthers (9-4) picked up the home victory with both Mila and Shea Mulready recording 6-1, 6-0 wins. Sequoia’s (5-8) Tessa Folan responded with a victory of her own in singles, but the Panthers swept the doubles matches all in straight sets to secure the victory.

The undefeated Scots (13-0) were tested in their home match against the Bearcats, namely in doubles where a thrilling 6-4, 4-6, 10-8 victory helped duo Tatum Fritts and Francsca Wesley get on the board for San Mateo (2-11). The Scots would sweep the rest of the day with Chloe Khachadourian, Megan Bence, Ujala Chauhan and Katherine Zhang all recording straight set singles victories.

Capuchino 5, South San Francisco 2

The Mustangs (6-6) and Warriors (0-12) split their singles matches on Tuesday but Capuchino would respond in doubles in a big way by sweeping all three matches. Amelia Bautista and Caitlyn Yan, Kaia Tsui and Malak Twam, and Kamryn Mendoza and Esisha Ramas lead the way with solid 6-0, 6-1; 6-0, 6-3 and 6-1, 6-3 victories respectively, for the Mustangs.

Westmoor (8-5) picked up a big road win at Oceana (3-7) on Tuesday to maintain their third-place standing. A relatively even day that saw Oceana pick up victories in both singles and doubles was highlighted by Westmoor’s Clarise Wu who won her singles match in convincing fashion: 6-0, 6-0.

El Camino 6, Terra Nova 1

Sitting just a game behind Westmoor, the Colts (7-4) swept their way through singles despite a down-to-the-wire 7-6(5), 4-6, 10-7 effort between El Camino’s Lia Woo and the Tigers’ (2-11) Amelia Montoya. Kaylee Tran and Liah Trade got Terra Nova on the board in doubles, but Yasmeen and Zayna Juhar, and Eva Tamayo and Zoei Ng slammed the door with impressive doubles wins for the Colts.

The first-place Cougars (12-0) showed up in a big way over the second-place Vikings (10-2) on Tuesday. Despite a Reina Watabiki 6-4, 6-4 singles victory for Mills, Half Moon Bay would take the rest of the day highlighted by duo Chloe Qugundah and Nicole Hide who won 6-1, 6-0, and Giorgia Carter and Shahbano Aurangzeb who won 6-0, 6-3.

Sacred Heart Prep 5, Harker 2

The Gators dropped the first two singles spots to the Eagles, but dominated the other five matches.

Sadie Goldstein, at No. 4 singles, and the No. 1 doubles team of Sannon Bennitt and Jasleen Chohan both won their matches at love, 6-0, 6-0. The No. 2 doubles team of Jessica Pica and Lauren Field lost only two games in a 6-0, 6-2 victory. Berkeley Bernstein, playing at No. 3 singles, dropped only four games in a 6-4, 6-0 victory.

Menlo School 6, Crystal 1

The Knight stayed undefeated in WBAL Foothill Division play, cruising past the Gryphons.

Emily Li, Izzy Klug and Sulia Gayle all won their singles matches in straight sets, while doubles team Lucinda Schafer and Alexa Hua won in a third-set tiebreaker.

Menlo School 234, Notre Dame-Belmont 252, King’s Academy 262

Joelle Kim, a senior, shot a 2-over 37 to lead Menlo to wins over both NDB and King’s Academy at Baylands Golf Links in Palo Alto in the WBAL regular-season finale.

Hailey Kim added a 42 for Menlo, while Chloe Lee carded a 48.

With the win, Menlo improves to 12-4. The WBAL championship is Monday at Sunnyvale Municipal.

EAGAN, Minn. (AP) — Thursday nights in the NFL have long been the most defining feature of its dedicated-to-television programming, a prime-time slot that raised concerns about player safety and spawned numerous competitions before moving to a streaming-only platform.

Now the league will have the power, albeit limited, to change the encounters.

NFL owners Monday approved a flexible scheduling policy for Thursday night games on Amazon Prime Video, just for weeks 13-17 and with at least 28 days’ notice for affected teams. The league could move a Thursday night game in that area to Sunday afternoon if there is a more desirable game, a mechanism that currently applies to Sunday night and Monday night games.

No team would need to play more than twice on Thursday night in a season. The rule only applies to 2023 for now. Any week 13-17 game could be selected for rescheduling to Thursday night, but the league said the bar for such a reshuffle is high.

“We’re incredibly prudent and incredibly sensitive when it comes to changing a game and the dynamics around it,” said Hans Schroeder, NFL Media’s executive vice president and chief operating officer. “We’re also trying to balance how we give our fans the best games in the best windows.”

In addition to the flexible games prime time allotments, the NFL is also now making the entire week 18 schedule available through the week to show two playoff-related games on Saturday.

New York Giants owner John Mara criticized the proposal for its negative impact on fans and said after the vote he was disappointed but not surprised.

Also on Monday at the NFL’s spring meetings, a rule was passed that allows teams to use an emergency quarterback from the inactive list if the first two are injured during a game. This decision stems from San Francisco’s Depth Chart Challenge in the NFC Championship game.

The bylaws were originally proposed by the Detroit Lions. The third quarterback designation does not count against the active player limit (either 47 or 48) set 90 minutes before kickoff.

Emergency Activation can only occur following an injury or disqualification, not as a result of a performance decision or other conduct. If one of the first two quarterbacks is cleared to return to the game by the team’s medical staff, the third must be removed from the game and may return as a quarterback only if an injury scenario recurs.

If a team puts three quarterbacks on the active list for a game, they cannot use the contingency option. An increase in the training squad on the day of the match is also not permitted.

49ers running back Christian McCaffery had his arm warmed up at the NFC Championship game in Philadelphia after Brock Purdy injured his elbow and Josh Johnson suffered a concussion. Purdy was pushed back into the game but couldn’t throw the ball more than 10 yards because the 49ers abandoned their game plan for a run-heavy attack in the 31-7 loss to the Eagles on Jan. 29.

The 49ers had already lost their two best quarterbacks — Trey Lance in Week 2 and Jimmy Garoppolo in Week 13 — to season-ending injuries.

This week’s agenda included diversity initiatives in coaching and sports medicine, as well as awarding two major events for the 2025 season. The Green Bay Packers received the NFL Draft and the San Francisco 49ers received Super Bowl 60.

The owners were also informed of the upcoming sale of the Washington Commanders by Dan Snyder’s family to Josh Harris’ group, an important if not urgent issue. There will be no vote on the record $6.05 billion transaction this week.

Jim Irsay, owner of the Indianapolis Colts and a member of the league’s finance committee, expressed cautious optimism about the closing of the deal.

“There are certain criteria that have to be met, and that’s the way it is. It’s not there yet, but that doesn’t mean it can’t get there. It’s complicated. Say it like this. I could explain it to you, but it wouldn’t tell you anything,” Irsay said.

Neither Snyder nor his wife, Tanya, came to Minnesota for the meeting. The league wants to approve the deal before the start of the regular season, Irsay said. Irsay stated that the amount of money at stake and the number of investors involved in Harris’ group – which includes Basketball Hall of Famer Magic Johnson – have extended the approval process.

“We work hard. Everyone wants to make it and needs to make sure it’s within league guidelines. It’s a complicated deal so we’re trying to just work through it and we’re confident we can pull it off. It will likely be several more weeks of discussion before we see if we can reach the finish line,” Irsay said.

Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said he is not concerned about the viability of the bid from Harris, who owns the NBA’s Philadelphia 76ers and NHL’s New Jersey Devils with partner David Blitzer, as long as it is properly structured.

“What it will be,” Jones said. “It’s too important for them to have the right structure because they will benefit from the way it’s been structured for everyone else in the past.”

There is no timetable for voting.

“These are superbly qualified owners,” Jones said. “That always decides the clarification with the NFL.”

Will there be snow in San Francisco? It’s hard to say, said Rick Canepa, meteorologist for the Bay Area National Weather Service.

About 1/10 to 1/15 inch of rainfall is forecast for San Francisco by 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. Thursday, with an additional 3/4 to 4/5 inch of rain possible overnight, Canepa said. Whether that precipitation will result in snow depends on how cold the air will be, Canepa said.

If snow were to fall, it would most likely be on San Francisco’s highest elevations like the Twin Peaks and Mount Sutro, Canepa said.

“This is really difficult to predict even in the short term because there are so many different variables at play,” Canepa said.

A woman photographs snow falling in San Francisco on February 5, 1976.

San Francisco hasn’t seen snow since 1976, when several inches of powder fell across the city, leaving a thin layer of snow over city streets.

By Thursday night, the snow line — the height at which snow is possible — will fall to 500 feet, according to San Francisco Chronicle meteorologist Gerry Díaz. This increases the likelihood of snow on San Francisco’s highest peaks between 1 a.m. and 8 a.m., Díaz said.

“Up to dusting is possible, along with some ice pellets in the mix,” Díaz said.

Some of the factors that determine whether it will snow overnight are the weather variations with altitude and the effects of the ocean, Canepa said. Southwest winds bring milder air from the ocean — sea surface temperatures are around 49 to 51 degrees, which is above freezing, reducing the chance of snow, Canepa said.

Colder air will move to San Francisco early Friday morning, but the city will also be at the “end of precipitation,” Canepa said. The likelihood of snow or other freezing precipitation will depend on the timing of those two events, Canepa said.

By midmorning, rising temperatures will raise the snowline too high to allow for further possible dusting on San Francisco’s peaks, and precipitation will become a mix of ice pellets and rain, Díaz said.

Art Fresh/The Chronicle 1976

The best chances of seeing snow are in the inner parts of the Bay Area like the North Bay Hills or the East Bay Hills, Canepa said.

There is a 38% chance of seeing an inch of snow down to the valley floor near Healdsburg or Cloverdale, Bay Area NWS meteorologist Brian Garcia said in an update Thursday afternoon.

Art Fresh/The Chronicle 1976

The “vast majority” of snow that falls — snow that stays on the ground — will be over 1,000 feet in the Bay Area, according to Garcia.

Some snow up to 500 to 1,000 feet is expected in the Bay Area overnight and through Friday, according to a tweet from UCLA climate scientist Daniel Swain. “Novel flakes” and sleet — supercooled water droplets that freeze on snow, also known as soft hail — are seen at even lower elevations, Swain wrote.

Some snow fell in the North Bay, East Bay and Santa Cruz Mountains throughout Thursday, according to photos and video shared on Twitter. Sleet crashed on a beach in Santa Cruz on Thursday afternoon.

South San Francisco Unified School District schools will be closed Thursday due to the major storm expected to hit the state today.

“According to the National Weather Service, a major storm will hit the Bay Area at 3 pm on Wednesday, Jan. 4,” said Superintendent Shawnterra Moore. “Based on this information and out of an abundance of caution, our district is planning to cancel classes on Thursday, Jan. 5.”

The district serves the communities of Daly City, South San Francisco and San Bruno.

The storm is expected to bring heavy rain and high winds that could result in flooding and power outages that impact roads and make driving difficult, according to a press release from the district. Consequently, all extracurricular and athletic activities scheduled for today and Thursday have been canceled.

“Jan. 4 is a minimum day, and we highly encourage families to pick up their children from school as soon as possible and to be off the roads and home by 3 pm on that day,” Moore said.

After school care will be available this afternoon for essential workers who are unable to take time off, but there will be no extended care services on Thursday.

OAKLAND (CBS SF) — City councilmembers may take a crucial vote Thursday afternoon that will move the city closer or further away from an agreement with the Oakland A’s for a new stadium in the city.

Councilmembers will vote on whether to certify the final environmental impact report, a necessary step toward a new ballpark. The A’s are also considering building a ballpark in Las Vegas and moving the team there.

READ MORE: Video Shows Armed Jewel Store Owner Foiling Hold Up In Redwood City

The $12 billion proposed project in Oakland includes a stadium seating about 35,000 people, up to 3,000 housing units nearby, a hotel with about 400 rooms, about 1.8 million square feet of commercial space, an arts venue for about 3,500 people and about 18 acres of land parks.

The development will sit on about 55 acres at Howard Terminal on Port of Oakland property bordering the Oakland-Alameda Estuary.

“A certified EIR will set the floor for the remaining negotiations, including robust community benefits and a development agreement that ensures that all Oaklanders benefit from this once-in-a-generation development,” Oakland Mayor Libby Schaaf said.

City council members will act on three items Thursday. Councilmembers will consider a resolution surrounding the project’s community benefits and compatibility with freight operations nearby.

Then the council will consider whether to certify the final EIR and whether to approve a jurisdictional ordinance describing what the city and what the Port of Oakland will do concerning the project.

Oakland A’s president Dave Kaval said the A’s are hoping the City Council certifies the EIR.

“It’s a big deal,” Kaval said. “Years of work have gone into this.”

Community benefits may include the construction of affordable housing as part of the project, which has been an important issue for city officials, as well as anti-displacement support and traffic congestion mitigation. The project is close to downtown and Chinatown.

Benefits may also include environmental and air quality protections. Kaval has previously said the project will result in cleaner air in West Oakland, the neighborhood nearest to the proposed project and one that has suffered from air pollution from freeways and the Port of Oakland.

Many of the goods traveling through the port go by rail, making it important that the project is compatible with freight operations. Not only will a bicycle and pedestrian bridge be built to accommodate travel over the nearby railroad tracks, but a bridge for vehicles is also planned, assuming the project is built.

The vote to certify the final EIR requires councilmembers to agree that the report complies with the California Environmental Quality Act, that the impacts of the project have been analyzed and mitigations have been identified and imposed and that the benefits of the project exceed adverse impacts that cannot be mitigated feasibly.

Oakland cannot enter into any binding agreements with the A’s for a new ballpark until councilmembers certify the final EIR.

The City Council will not be considering the construction of a gondola that had been proposed to take people to games at the ballpark. Council members will also not be voting on a development agreement, also known as a binding financial agreement, for the project, and the final binding agreement necessary for the project.

Assuming the City Council approves the jurisdictional ordinance, the city will then take responsibility for Howard Terminal, which is currently on Port property.

The City Council could fail to vote Thursday, moving the vote to March. City officials do not see that as a major stumbling block to getting the project done.

Following the vote on the final EIR, all the remaining approvals come forward together including a general plan amendment and among other things, the development agreement. Summer is the soonest for those approvals, according to the city.

Kaval said the team continues to pursue sites in southern Nevada.

“We remain on parallel paths,” he said, in Oakland and in Nevada until the team gets a new home.

He said the team is “driving forward with great haste” toward that home. The A’s lease at its current home at the Oakland Coliseum expires in 2024.

“We’re desperately running out of time,” Kaval said.

The City Council meeting starts at 3:30 pm and the public can watch at https://us02web.zoom.us/j/85184082009.

SAN FRANCISCO (BCN) – The Bay Area Air Quality Management District has issued air quality warnings for Thursday and Friday, according to officials, as wildfire smoke returns to the area.

Pollution levels are not expected to exceed federal health standards or trigger a spare-the-air alarm.

The air district said Wednesday that the ongoing forest fires in Northern California will likely cause foggy and smoky skies for the next two days, with some smoke coming to the surface at times, but general air quality in the area is expected to be good to moderate.

The warnings were released on Wednesday as most of the Bay Area enjoyed respite from wildfire smoke as the wind pushed smoke from the Caldor and Dixie fires northeast since Tuesday.

The air quality warnings have come up frequently over the past few weeks due to forest fire smoke, and when air pollution was worse, the air district issued the Spare the Air warnings that prohibit burning wood both indoors and outdoors.

If someone smells smoke, they should try to stay indoors with the windows and doors closed and set their air conditioning and car ventilation systems to recirculate to prevent outside air from getting inside, according to the aviation authority.

Residents can see the latest air quality readings at baaqmd.gov/highs or the AirNow Fire and Smoke Map at fire.airnow.gov. The independently operated air monitoring website PurpleAir.com also provides localized air quality measurements.

To find out when a spare-the-air alert is in effect, residents can register for text alerts by sending the word “START” to 817-57, register for email AirAlerts at sparetheat.org, 1 Call (800) HELP-AIR, download the Spare the Air app or connect with Spare the Air on Facebook or Twitter.
