SAN FRANCISCO–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Aug 24, 2023–

Thumbtack, the technology company helping millions of people confidently care for their homes, released new findings today from its Future of Skilled Trades Report. Thumbtack’s marketplace helps millions of people find and hire the right professional from its community of 300,000 local service businesses. Amid a worrying trend of the rapidly declining skilled trade labor force, the report provides an optimistic view of the future, with 47 percent of young adult respondents expressing interest in a trade profession and the vast majority (83 percent) believing that learning a skilled trade is sometimes a better pathway to economic security than going to college.

This press release features multimedia. View the full release here: https://www.businesswire.com/news/home/20230824491929/en/

Why young adults are excited about the skilled trades over traditional office jobs. (Graphic: Business Wire)

The survey, which separately captured data from 1,000 U.S. adults aged 18-30 and 800+ US adults employed in the skilled trades, indicates that the skilled trades do not have a perception problem, with interest remaining strong. Instead, findings highlight a pathway problem as societal pressure, parental pressure and a lack of access to trade education continues to push young adults to higher education.

59 percent of respondents report having felt pressure to attend a 4-year college/university (56 percent feeling this pressure from family),

82 percent believe kids and teens are often incorrectly told that college is the only way to become successful in life,

48 percent didn’t have the opportunity to attend a trade high school, and

32 percent didn’t have the option to take a shop class in school.

“There’s never been a better time to enter the trades, and as a generation shaped by the pandemic and gig economy, Gen Z are uniquely suited to a profession that offers flexibility and independence,” said Marco Zappacosta, CEO and co-founder of Thumbtack. “With a lower barrier to entry than in the past and incredible demand for people to fill these roles, expertise in the trades is a future-proof career.”

To help drive greater access to the necessary education and resources, Thumbtack will pilot its Tools of the Trade Mentorship Sessions to connect the next generation of workers with local service business owners. Thumbtack’s top pros in a variety of trades from HVAC to plumbing will offer free virtual mentoring sessions focused on starting and running your own local service business to help young adults learn about careers in the trades. The program will be led by members of Thumbtack’s new, inaugural Pro AdvisoryBoard.

“Starting your own business can be intimidating, particularly for women in the trades who are entering a traditionally male-dominated field,” said Brittney Workman, founder of female-owned plumbing company Trade Pros and Thumbtack Pro Advisor. “My hope as a small business owner is to provide more readily-available support for the next generation, encouraging them to leave their comfort zone and explore different career paths. There will inevitably be roadblocks when starting your own business or learning a new trade and having a mentor can be a crucial part of successfully making that leap.”

Additional key takeaways from the report include:

Traits of skilled trade careers strongly resonate with young adults: Young adults have incredible respect for the skilled trades (73 percent), with medicine (77 percent) being the only career that commands respect from a higher proportion of young adults.

Young adults identified the biggest benefits of a skilled trade over a traditional office job as having a flexible schedule (82 percent), faster educational program (82 percent), less expensive education and/or less debt (82 percent), quicker entry into the workforce (82 percent) and an ability to be your own boss (81 percent).

What’s more, 74 percent believe skilled trades jobs won’t be replaced by AI.

Skilled trade professionals highly recommend a career in the trades: 94 percent of skilled trade pros would encourage their own kids or family to pursue a skilled trade and a majority (87 percent) would choose their career again if given the opportunity.

87 percent of skilled trade workers are happy with their jobs—compared with the 51 percent of young adults who say they’re extremely or very satisfied.

95 percent are optimistic about their job security and believe they won’t be replaced by AI

Future of Skilled Trades Report Methodology:

Sample A of 1000 U.S. young adults (aged 18-30) was surveyed on July 18 and 19, 2023. Sampling was calibrated to reflect even gender and geographical distribution. DKC Analytics conducted and analyzed this survey with a sample procured using the Pollfish survey delivery platform, which delivers online surveys globally through mobile apps and the mobile web along with the desktop web. No post-stratification has been applied to the results.

Sample B of 837 U.S. adults, consisting of 659 completes and 178 partial completes, was surveyed between June 21 and July 17, 2023. All respondents in Sample B are primarily employed in the skilled trades in home construction, home maintenance or home systems via self-confirmation. Thumbtack conducted this survey via link sharing through their internal email list. No post-stratification has been applied to the results.

New survey finds 75 percent of homeowners know someone who has had a house fire, and the majority (57 percent) occurred during the holidays

SAN FRANCISCO, December 01, 2022–(BUSINESS WIRE)–The holidays are all about celebrating traditions with family and friends. Between choosing the right gifts and preparing delicious meals, you have plenty on your plate. Ensuring that you and your loved ones are safe can be an additional stress. Today, Thumbtack, the app used by millions of homeowners across the country to care for their homes, unveiled a new “Holiday Fire Prevention Checklist” that allows homeowners to check their home’s fire risk, and seamlessly book a home service professional to help prevent fires before they happen.

This press release features multimedia. View the full release here: https://www.businesswire.com/news/home/20221201005163/en/

Thumbtack unveils new “Holiday Fire Prevention Checklist” (Graphic: Business Wire)

“We recently found that 75 percent of people know someone who has had a house fire, and the majority occurred over the holiday season. Yet, homeowners are reluctant to admit they themselves are at risk of a home fire — with only 1 in 5 stating they believe their own personal risk of a fire is high,” said David Steckel, Thumbtack’s Home Expert. “In order to ensure this holiday season is full of joy and celebration with friends and family, we want to help homeowners understand the causes of house fires — and take action to prevent them. Our goal is to give homeowners peace of mind so they can enjoy their holiday festivities.”

The “Holiday Fire Prevention Checklist” highlights the top projects homeowners should tackle before the holidays, which have the highest risk of starting a fire if left unaddressed, including:

Hang holiday lights (hire a pro): A professional installer can take this festive (but time-consuming) task off your hands — and ensure you’re not overloading your circuits.

Sweep chimney (hire a pro): Annual inspections and cleanings are a must to minimize fire hazards, manage creosote buildup, and prevent gas leaks.

Test smoke and carbon monoxide alarms (DIY): Working alarms are crucial. Testing yearly and replacing every 7 years is the best way to make sure you’re protected.

Clean dryer vents (hire a pro): Lint buildup causes about 3,000 house fires yearly. Cleaning your dryer’s exhaust pipe can help prevent a fire and improve efficiency.

Inspect fire extinguishers (DIY): Always keep a working dry chemical fire extinguisher (the dial should be in the “green region”) easily accessible and near the kitchen.

Trim trees (hire a pro): Keeping your trees trimmed prolongs the life of your roof, cuts down on potential fire hazards, and can prevent wildlife from moving in.

Deep clean gas range (DIY or hire a pro): Built-up grease can be a big fire hazard — especially with a gas range. Be sure to clean it out every 3-6 months.

Ensure space heaters are not a hazard (DIY): Only run space heaters in a clear, hazard-free space — and never overnight.

Do an electrical check (hire a pro): Prevent fire hazards by having a pro check your property (inside and out) for faulty electrical wiring and overloaded circuits.

Maintain Christmas tree (DIY): Make sure to water your tree, unplug it at night, or set a timer to avoid fires — artificial trees are also a great alternative.

Story continues

In addition to creating a resource hub for homeowners, from December 1 – December 9, 2022, Thumbtack will also be offering consumers $50 off* their next home project so they can prevent fires this holiday season — from hiring a chimney pro to booking a home inspection, and more (terms and conditions apply).

Visit www.thumbtack.com/content/fire-prevention to learn more about potential fire hazards this holiday season, to see how your home ranks on the safety scale, and to book a pro to ensure you’re ready to tackle the holiday season — worry-free.

Thumbtack, which connects customers with professional service providers like plumbers and electricians, is rolling out displays in more than 300 HEB stores across Texas. Shoppers use their mobile phone to scan a QR code on the displays to find animal services near them.

Certain HEB stores also have Thumbtack’s “On Demand” feature, which connects shoppers to local home improvement, lawn care companies and cleaning services at a 10 percent discount. The partnership marks San Francisco-based Thumbtack’s first foray into retail and reflects San Antonio-based HEB’s broader push to expand into additional categories outside of grocery.

“Thumbtack’s mission is to make taking care of everything in and around the home a seamless experience for the homeowner,” said David Steckel, senior director of strategic partnerships at Thumbtack. “Expansion into physical retail takes us a step closer to that by enabling us to be a partner to consumers, whether they’re shopping in-store for their pets or preparing their yard for housing.”

HEB and other grocers are installing more in-store departments and services to increase traffic, sales and profits, and diversify revenue streams in an industry known for razor-thin profit margins. Some of the categories are more profitable than groceries and result in shoppers spending more time in stores.

The San Antonio-based company has added Home by HEB sections including throw pillows, rugs, vases, chairs and table linens; HEB brand shops with t-shirts, socks and baby clothes; True Texas BBQ restaurants; bars serving beer, wine and cocktails; and health clinics with primary care and nutritional services.

The HEB store at US 281 and Evans Road has a beauty department with cosmetics, hair products and testing stations. The company also has small shops in some of its stores, such as Mia’s Mirror, Bonita Brows Bar, Diamond Decks, and River City Flooring.

SAN FRANCISCO–(BUSINESS WIRE)–The holidays are all about celebrating traditions with family and friends.

Maintain gas fireplace (hire a pro): These fireplaces need regular maintenance too — connections can corrode over time, leading to potential gas leaks.

In addition to creating a resource hub for homeowners, from December 1 – December 9, 2022, Thumbtack will also be offering consumers $50 off* their next home project so they can prevent fires this holiday season — from hiring a chimney pro to booking a home inspection, and more (terms and conditions apply).

Visit www.thumbtack.com/content/fire-prevention to learn more about potential fire hazards this holiday season, to see how your home ranks on the safety scale, and to book a pro to ensure you’re ready to tackle the holiday season — worry free.

Deal points to rising interest in Brookfield Properties’ 5M as it prepares for a spring grand opening of its office, housing, parks and arts components

New space will be purpose-built to foster in-person connections within virtual-first company

SAN FRANCISCO, February 17, 2022–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Thumbtack, the modern home management platform, announced today it has leased space at Brookfield Properties’ new 415 Natoma Street office tower at its 5M cultural-arts and mixed-use district in San Francisco’s downtown SoMa neighborhood.

San Francisco-based Thumbtack is moving its footprint from the city’s upper Market Street area to a full floor at 415 Natoma. Last year, Thumbtack moved their more than 950 employees to a virtual-first working model, with an emphasis on prioritizing a flexible, equitable and inclusive work environment. This new space will serve as Thumbtack’s first ‘Library’, a new concept providing space for independent work and in-person connections for local team members.

“At Thumbtack, we are rethinking the future of work as we embrace a virtual-first model. As a result, we’re changing our real estate footprint to provide dedicated space for socializing with colleagues to build deeper connections and for getting work done, ” said Jelena Djordjevic, VP of People at Thumbtack. “We’re intentionally not building an ‘office.’ We’re excited to introduce a brand new, purpose-built environment to connect in-person – be that through an in-person activity or after work happy hour – or simply to enjoy a change of scenery day-to-day.”

Thumbtack’s San Francisco Library is custom-designed for their new way of working and features floor to ceiling windows, an open layout with no conference rooms, and two distinct spaces. The first is designed for socializing, hosting gatherings and spending time with colleagues in lounge areas, an open kitchen and separate bar area. While the second will provide dedicated space for quiet, heads down work with dedicated zoom rooms to meet with colleagues from around the world.

Story continues

The 25-story Class A office building designed by KPF is part of the transformative 5M mixed-use neighborhood. 5M was entitled by Brookfield Properties in partnership with Hearst. The new district is transforming four acres of parking lots and underutilized buildings into a pedestrian-focused experience. In spring 2022, Brookfield will mark the grand opening of its project elements including new housing, retail, and restored historic buildings with a new public park at its heart. Programming for arts, neighborhood cultural communities, and community youth are integral to 5M.

Thumbtack was started five blocks away and said it remains committed to growing its business in the neighborhood. The company, valued at $3.2B in its last fundraise in June of 2021, helps millions of homeowners continuously care for their most valuable asset – their home – by knowing what to do, when to do it, and who to hire.

“Thumbtack has been a fixture in SoMa since its inception in 2008, and we’re excited that 415 Natoma can provide them with all of the ingredients necessary to make a modern, healthy space for their team members to thrive,” said Cutter MacLeod, Director, Asset Management for the Bay Area at Brookfield Properties. “We’re offering businesses, nonprofits and arts-based organizations with a dynamic mixed-use environment unique to San Francisco.”

After taking over the home management startup Setter in December, Thumbtack – one of the pioneers in the gig economy for home services – launched a large round to double the model. The company has raised $ 275 million, money the company plans to use with its network of home service professionals to build a property management and maintenance business. Co-founder and CEO Marco Zappacosta confirmed the round valued Thumbtack at $ 3.2 billion.

In some context, that’s almost double the rating Thumbtack had on its last fundraising, a $ 150 million round led by Sequoia in 2019. It also follows a strong 2020 with sales up more than 50%. Thumbtack’s gross sales (what it pays in service fees, not Thumbtack’s cut) are now well on track to exceed $ 2 billion this year.

This latest funding is being led by the Qatar Investment Authority (QIA), which also includes Blackstone Alternative Asset Management (BAAM) and G Squared. Previous donors Baillie Gifford, CapitalG, Founders Circle Capital, Sequoia Capital and Tiger Global Management also invested.

The funding and shifting focus of the company underscores some of the changes we’ve seen in consumers over the past year.

Because of Covid-19, most of us have stayed at home in large part – which often includes moving to a new home to spend so much more time in – and, as Thumbtack sees it, has a lot more people led to paying more attention to how to make these homes better places and keep them in better shape overall. Partly why it sees a great opportunity – besides being a marketplace for finding professionals for one-off jobs that you may need to do around the home – in providing a “home management” platform to do justice to this new attention.

“It’s pretty wild that people’s homes are their greatest asset, the most complicated thing to be responsible for, but there is no manual,” Zappacosta said in an interview. “When you think about your car, you have to maintain it regularly. Otherwise, you might have to pay a large emergency bill [to fix something]. The same concept applies to the house. But there was never an easy way to know what to do, how much to pay for it, and then just get it done. That’s what we do. “

Services include emergency repairs to electrical systems in the house, as well as preventive maintenance that you may need to do on your property, he said. They do not include contractors to renovate bathrooms or other elective work.

Moving to property management is an interesting twist for another reason too. It’s a sign of how Thumbtack is contributing to a bigger change in the overall use of services: through subscriptions.

That said, while many of us still go shopping or go to the movies every now and then, we all also subscribe to at least one video-on-demand service, many of us may also have Prime accounts in order to enjoy the various benefits of Amazon received, and so on. If we subscribe to everything and everywhere, why not include house maintenance as well?

Thumbtack, now over a decade old, is viewed by many as one of the first steps in the gig economy focusing on home services. However, this has not remained without its challenges. As we reported back in 2019, the last round was a difficult one for the company and it looked like it could come to a flat valuation. That was on the heels of many others in the industry – Thumbtack’s competitors that included not just other startups but heavyweights like Amazon and Google – who fizzled out in their own home services endeavors.

And Covid-19 also proved to be a huge challenge for Thumbtack, which laid off 250 people in March last year.

“Yeah, look, it’s been a year’s roller coaster ride,” Zappacosta said when I asked him about it. “In the early stages of COVID, there was so much fear that many simply switch everything off. People said, ‘I won’t have anyone in my house.’ And so those months were really scary – March, April – because it was unclear how long it would be. And so we made adjustments to make sure we stand the test of time. “

However, that seemed to change later in the year, he continued.

“When people started getting used to masking, and all the precautions, you know, the demand came back. And so in June, July we saw it return to normal levels. And then you know what happened, the big investments we’ve made in the platform over the past few years are to pay off the hiring experience, a lot more e-commerce, really more and more. “

He said 2020 was Thumbtacks’ third year of accelerated growth, “which is kind of surprising given that Covid was in the thick of it. And so [with] the momentum we exert … we’ve never been in a stronger position. “

That also helped to win this last round.

“Thumbtack’s modernization of the home service industry is a boon for both homeowners and home service professionals,” said Bryan Schreier, partner at Sequoia Capital and Thumbtack board member, in a statement. “The biggest obstacle to starting new home projects is headache and anger. By creating a better and easier way for everyone to take care of their home, Thumbtack will open up a huge category and spark new economic activity. “

The company is now focused on where it could best use the technology to gain the upper hand on its platform, which not only competes with other home service marketplaces, but also with a growing number of emerging and established “property management” providers How great, the last month we raised $ 50 million.

An interesting idea that Zappacosta described to me and that could well be part of a later development phase was to offer customers an opportunity to “tour” their homes so that Thumbtack could get a better idea of the room and what would be better observed the property management has to personalize the respective house and the respective user.

That will keep the company in the US, too, instead of expanding internationally. Globally, the home services and repairs market is valued at about $ 500 billion annually, and astonishingly, the US represents a whopping 40% of that value.
