A once-stray cat rescued from an animal shelter and adopted by a loving family is now helping people at a California airport.

Duke Ellington Morris, a 14-year-old black and white cat, became the first cat to join San Francisco International Airport’s (SFO) therapy animal team, known as the “Wag Brigade,” in late May.

In 2010, Duke was rescued from the streets of San Francisco where he was found starving alongside other feral cats and taken to San Francisco Animal Care and Control. There, a 5-year-old girl spotted the tuxedo cat and her family quickly took him home.

“I can hear my daughter screaming with joy, ‘I love the black and white kitten.’ And I’m like, ‘What are you talking about?'” Duke’s owner Jen Morris told SF Gate. “We met Duke and he focused on my daughter. And I figured if a cat wants a 5-year-old to be their next protector, he can’t be that bad.”

Duke’s people were quickly impressed by his calm and warm demeanor, and had him certified as a therapy animal through the San Francisco Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals’ animal-assisted therapy program.

The special cat — named after the jazz great — has worked as an animal therapist for a decade, visiting patients in hospitals across the city to comfort them through difficult times.

Now he’s helping airport visitors relieve travel-related stress by joining the ragtag crew of SFO therapy animals, which includes several dogs, as well as a rabbit named Alex the Great and a pig named LiLou – all certified and tested therapy animals.

The non-human therapists walk through the airport terminals in “Pet Me” vests to comfort anxious travelers. The program launched in 2013 and returned in 2021 after a 20-month hiatus due to the COVID pandemic.

Thermo Fisher Scientific and the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) have partnered to open a new cGMP cell therapy manufacturing facility adjacent to UCSF Medical Center’s Mission Bay campus. The facility will be used by both UCSF researchers and Thermo Fisher Scientific customers.

According to Thermo Fisher Scientific (and many others in the industry), challenges in manufacturing cell therapies — especially at scale — are impeding wider adoption. The partnership was first announced in 2021 with the aim of overcoming some of these difficulties.

“By bringing increased capacity and extensive cell therapy experience to the city of San Francisco, we hope to accelerate the development of advanced cell therapy at UCSF and with the surrounding life sciences community, which is home to more than 200 biotechnology companies.” said Dan Herring, general manager of cell therapy services at Thermo Fisher Scientific. “In the future, we also hope to expand our partnerships with academia and industry focused on cell therapies and industry in the development of novel cell therapies and other immune cell-based therapies to treat patients with blood cancers, as well as those with solid tumors.” to support. ”

The facility will provide process and analytical development capabilities, as well as clinical and commercial cGMP manufacturing services for autologous and allogeneic cell therapies. It includes six individual, user-configurable GMP production suites (with expansion capacity) and self-contained HVAC and associated infrastructure to protect against cross-contamination.

UCSF researchers will use the facility to develop new therapies, with an initial focus on treating glioblastoma, multiple myeloma and other cancers using CAR-T and CRISPR technologies.

As a writer and culture vulture, I have always been fascinated by the power of words to shape our understanding of the world. While initially pursuing a career in the music industry, beginning as a classical pianist and later producing electronic music for record labels around the world, my true passion has always been writing.

Now I write as Associate Editor for the pharmaceutical industry’s diverse audience, covering everything from exciting new scientific research to new facility announcements and more. I am particularly interested in cell and gene therapeutics and the societal impact of drug development.

MIAMI, Feb. 15, 2022 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — Ehave, Inc. (OTC Pink: EHVVF) (the “Company”), a leading healthcare services and technology company, announced today that its wholly-owned subsidiary, KetaDASH, commenced Clinical operations, offering in-home ketamine therapy to patients suffering from treatment-resistant mental health issues. Initially, the treatment will be offered in the San Francisco Bay Area and Greater Sacramento Area with plans to expand to other markets in the coming months. KetaDASH is a managed service organization focused on the psychedelic mental health sector with the mission of helping physicians streamline their practice operations, create new revenue opportunities, and achieve better patient outcomes.

KetaDASH treatments will be conducted by a team of experienced nurses who will come to your home, office, or mobile location after initial telemedicine screening and provide a complete ketamine experience, with a focus on set and setting, with packages that include telemedicine integration with psychotherapists . This innovative service departs from in-clinic intravenous treatment or unsupervised telehealth models to an at-home ketamine administration with telehealth and in-person medical supervision. A typical KetaDASH experience incorporates a prescribing doctor, a nurse for administration and monitoring, and psychotherapists for integration, all from the comfort of the patient’s home.

Story continues

Jeffrey D. Kamlet, MD, FASAM, DABAM, Chief Medical Officer of Ehave, said, “I have over-seen over 600 successful ketamine treatments and have been amazed by the positive results. We are pleased to begin our US rollout in Sacramento and San Francisco, with plans to scale our business in other cities over the coming months. Even though ketamine is a relatively safe drug to administer, we have made patient safety our top priority. As such, KetaDASH treatments begin with a telehealth med screen and then treatments will be conducted by a team of experienced nurses who will come to your home, office, or mobile location and administer your session. Post ketamine therapy will be available and is recommended. We believe this will give our clients the confidence in knowing they are receiving the utmost support throughout their treatment experience. This pioneering approach is a departure from ketamine telehealth models, which mail prescriptions and do not provide in-person support or guidance during the psychedelic experience.”

Ketamine therapy has turned out to be a life-changing alternative to antidepressants for many patients. The Multidisciplinary Association for Psychedelic Studies, a non-profit research and educational organization, claimed, “There has been a recent explosion of interest in ketamine, a synthetic chemical with powerful antidepressant and visionary properties.”

Ketamine is an FDA approved drug that has been used for over 50 years as a safe dissociative anesthetic that is now being studied as a treatment for major depression. In certain psychiatric conditions, such as treatment-resistant depression, anxiety, post-traumatic stress disorder and alcohol abuse, ketamine has shown very encouraging results.

Completing day-to-day activities are often challenging for patients with mental health disorders. For patients who suffer from depression and post-traumatic stress disorder, symptoms such as fatigue, social isolation, lack of motivation, and high levels of anxiety are frequent. Unfortunately, many of the patients who suffer from these mental health issues find it difficult to go to a physical clinic. By providing this treatment at the patient’s home, office, or mobile location, KetaDASH intends to broaden access to this important therapy.

Ben Kaplan, CEO of Ehave, said, “For patients with mental health disorders, the need for more effective treatment options is greater now than it ever has been in the past. When used at sub-anesthetic doses, ketamine has proven effective in treating many psychiatric disorders. KetaDASH will provide better access to this treatment for a larger patient population in a safe and convenient way. Through our KetaDASH mobile clinics, patients will benefit from receiving the ketamine therapy in the privacy and comfort of their own homes. Patient safety is our top priority, so all ketamine treatments will be delivered by certified medical professionals. The KetaDASH platform will utilize proprietary software developed by Ehave which will allow patients and their associated nurses to view detailed reports on the ketamine therapy’s progress.”

KetaDASH is also available to ketamine clinics and qualified patients whose healthcare provider has prescribed it as a treatment. Qualified patients, doctors, and clinics are invited to visit KetaDash.com for more information.

UNITED STATES — We are all involved in it, some far more than others, I’m talking about retail therapy. It seems in 2020, during the pandemic, that we were all safe from getting involved. When I talk about retail therapy, I actually mean visiting people in the brick and mortar stores. Online shopping doesn’t. Why? There are some big differences between the two, even if people seem to think that it is NOT.

So is retail therapy a good thing or a bad thing? Well it depends on the situation. If you are spending money because there are things you need, you are in a good place. However, if you are spending your money on the simple fact, then we have something to discuss. Goods are end-of-the-day goods and when you buy items that are never used, why did you originally buy that item?

I’ll argue in June 2020, July 2020, August 2020, I found some of the best and I mean the best deals at retailers. You need to keep in mind that so many retailers had closed their doors to the public for around 3 to 4 months in order to implement COVID-19 protocols and find ways to keep their employees and customers safe. I mean folks, I bought Levi jeans for $ 5 at some top department stores. I’ve bought designer shoes that I thought I couldn’t have bought in a million years at 75 to 80 percent discounts.

Retailers had a huge amount of previous or current season inventory to get rid of. As a result, the consumer has got bargain after bargain that you will NEVER see, and I mean, people will NEVER see again. That’s the unfortunate side effect, and I hope you took advantage of it. As a result, I did a majority of my Christmas shopping in 2020 and some for 2021 last summer. The problem that some people spent a lot more than they needed and as a result, they regretted it. The buyers’ repentance that we all experience has been heavily impacted in 2020 and is really effective in 2021 with the high rates of inflation.

The pandemic has put many retailers out of business. Some focused solely on the internet and others were forced to close their doors completely. Why? Retailers couldn’t survive with their doors closed for so long. It was horrible, and I mean, it was horrible to lose retailers that have been around for decades and within a few months they have completely disappeared.

Does Retail Therapy Really Help Your Mood? Some people I know do. If they’re in a breakdown it gets them out of that breakdown for the time being, but a week later they complain about purchased items that they want to return because it was a stupid purchase that wasn’t needed. At the same time, retail therapy is a good thing for exercise. Why? It forces you to move, it’s not like sitting at the computer all day just clicking things. When you go to the mall or brick and mortar stores, you move and it is better to move than not to move.

In addition, you can interact with people, touch objects, see the fabric and actually SEE what you are going to spend your money on. You don’t have that experience when shopping online. I think that due to the current surge in inflation, retail therapy will be more urgently needed in 2021 so that people can get some stress off. Are the cost of some goods a little higher than expected?

Yes, unfortunately, but that doesn’t mean you have to break the bank. There are deals, especially now that Black Friday deals are being released earlier than ever in 2021 to give consumers a chance to do their Christmas shopping sooner than normal. Retail therapy has its pros and cons, I think there are more pros than cons, the biggest one is that you just have to be aware of what you are spending and not just buying to buy or feel better. Get things you need and sometimes give yourself to get something you want. However, remember, if you REALLY DO NOT WANT IT, DO NOT BUY IT!

Ex-Pastor Joel Barrett was just a kid when he realized he was different.

“I have memories of thinking about boys when I was four and five years old. There was a boy in my class who had olive skin and dark hair and I fell in love with him, ”Joel, 55, told The Mirror.

It was only when Joel of the United States reached puberty that he began to understand his feelings – he was attracted to boys.

But being gay was not part of Joel’s conservative Baptist upbringing, and he was brought up to believe that homosexuality was a sin.

The father of three described his church as a little less extreme in its faith than the Westboro Baptist Church – which is known to stake the funerals of fallen soldiers and celebrate human tragedy as a gift from God.

Joel, on Instagram as @Joelspeaksout, went through decades of turmoil trying to hide his sexuality
    (

Picture:

Joel Barrett)

“Everything I’ve heard about homosexuality was horrific growing up. I heard preachers standing in the pulpit shouting that all gays should be shipped to an island, infected and let die.

“There has been a lot of ridicule of female men trying to scare you,” he said.

Instead of facing his feelings, Joel suppressed his sexuality and rushed into worship.

“Most people thought I was godly, but I knew if they ever found out I was gay, that would change immediately. So I started this cycle of hiding and burying the truth. “

The hell of the widow’s loneliness after battling cancer during lockdown after husband’s death Daddy’s double life as a gambling addict with £ 500,000 in debt uncovered by a life-changing phone call

Over the years, Joel told himself that his feelings would go away when he reached his next goal, such as going to Bible school or meeting a girl.

When he was 23 years old, Joel walked down the altar and married a woman.

“It was the next ‘right’ thing to do. I didn’t knowingly deceive anyone, but I thought that was what I should be doing – find a good Christian wife.

“But nothing has changed in me. I was like, ‘Wow, now I’m married and I have these feelings,’ ”he said.

At 23, Joel married and raised a family in the hopes that his feelings for men would go away

Joel Barrett)

While embarking on married life and pursuing a career in the Church as a pastor, Joel described a life of constant feelings of fear and shame “while hiding his sexuality.

To cope with his secret, he started ‘cruising’ – finding sex and intimacy with other men in parks and other public spaces.

“It was a quick fix and I was immediately full of guilt and fear. It meant that someone actually knew I was gay and I was worried that they would show up in my real life. “

From then on, every Sunday when Joel went to the church platform to speak to 500 people, he would scan the audience to see if there were any men he was intimate with.

Joel became a pastor and preached to hundreds of people every Sunday

Picture:

Joel Barrett)

But one day after moving to another state, Joel encountered another cruiser who took him twice.

“When I got into the vehicle, I saw him and felt like I was looking in the mirror. I just thought: ‘He is you’. “

After that meeting, Joel decided to undergo conversion therapy.

Although his experience wasn’t comparable to the violent portrayals in films, Joel says the next few years were the darkest of his life.

“I wanted to die. I didn’t want to kill myself, but I wanted someone else to kill me.

“IVF gave me my miracle baby, but the pain caused me to be tied to the bed with uncontrollable anger”

“I saw counselors and told them every dark secret for three years. No one has ever thrown the Bible over to me, but they asked questions like whether I had an arrogant mother or an absent father, ”he explained.

“None of this is based on any kind of science. It is mainly based on belief. “

In a description of the therapy on his website, Joel wrote: “I went to individual and group counseling, went to retreats, read the books, went to conferences, listened to the speakers, fought evil spirits with the counselor, cried and prayed like never before in my life.”

Yet after three years of “talking and praying”, Joel made no progress and became frustrated.

Joel tried to fight his sexuality for years but now lives happily and openly as a gay man and wants to bridge a gap between the LGBTQ + community and the Church
    (

Picture:

Joel Barrett)

“I asked my counselor to put me in touch with some people who were successful after therapy. But he said no.

“He told me that if they talked to me, everyone was either ashamed of needing the counseling in the first place or too afraid of relapsing.”

After sending himself through Hell for three years and now 36 years old, he realized something. He was gay and that wasn’t going to change.

Despite his relief that he was no longer keeping the secret, he then went through the riot of telling his wife he was gay and ending the marriage.

Joel speaks at conferences and events to share his story and encourage others to happily live the way they are
    (

Joel Barrett)

“Going through the divorce was like admitting failure,” he said, adding that it was difficult to navigate life as an openly gay man.

“I knew I was gay, but I didn’t know what it was like.”

As part of the process, Joel stopped going to church – another big change in his life.

“I had to clear the rubble of 36 years of my life and fight. I realized that I had to get rid of that before I could build up again. “

Over time, Joel met his current husband, David Seymour.

Joel and David have been happily married for 15 years

“I went out with a couple of guys shortly after I came out and went through a kind of ‘gay puberty’,” he joked.

But after meeting David, Joel knew it was time to settle down.

“That was perfect timing. I always told David he was my breath of fresh air, ”said Joel.

Meanwhile, Joel’s three children were approaching their teens and he decided to introduce them to David.

“They were difficult to drive on, but gradually David just became a part of their lives. They always understood him and saw him as a friend, ”he said.

Joel describes his loving husband David as a “breath of fresh air” and has dedicated his book to him

Aaron Burson)

Now, almost 20 years after coming out, Joel is still happily married to David. He wrote about his experience in a book called Godly … But Gay, which is dedicated to his husband.

On Instagram as @Joelspeaksout he works as a motivational coach who helps others through difficult times and is happy with who he is. He also says he wants to bridge the gap between some religions and the LGBTQ + community.

“My belief is personal. I am not an anti-religion, and if you are part of a denomination that makes you a better person then keep doing it.

“But if you’re part of a spiritual community that tells you you’re broken, get out,” he warned.

“I believe in the power of storytelling and tell my story because it humanizes my experience. Growing up, the only images I had in my head of LGBTQ people were people in San Francisco dancing half-naked in the street.

“It’s easy to see people as ‘others’, but when we tell these stories we can see ourselves as people.”

Godly … But Gay is out now and can be bought on Amazon

Nkarta Therapeutics is not slowing down. The biotech made an impressive IPO debut last July and administered its leading commercial cancer immunotherapy to the first patient a few months later.

Now, the South San Francisco-based biotech company is moving into an 88,000 square foot facility that will not only serve as its newest headquarters, but also support the research, development and future commercial manufacture of its cell therapy pipeline.

Nkarta plans to redesign the center to optimize the mix of its off-the-shelf cancer therapies with natural killers (NK), the company said on Wednesday. The biotech did not disclose the cost of the project.

The facility will be a “multi-product” manufacturing facility and is slated to go online by the end of 2023, Nkarta said. At full capacity, the facility should be able to produce “commercial shipments of multiple cell therapy products”.

The biotech is currently in Phase 1 testing of its lead drug NKX101, which uses NK cells from healthy donors engineered to express a chimeric antigen receptor (CAR) that targets the NKG2D ligand in certain blood cancers aims.

Nkarta says its manufacturing process is capable of producing “an abundant amount of NK cells,” which are more cost effective than current allogeneic and autologous cell therapies when made on a large scale. To get there, Nkarta uses a proprietary NKSTIM cell line capable of producing hundreds of single doses from a single manufacturing run.

The cell line can freeze and store the CAR NK cells and is designed to “allow immediate, ready-to-use administration to patients at the point of care,” said Nkarta.

The new headquarters will be in addition to a smaller 2,700 square foot facility, also in the San Francisco area, which Nkarta has just completed. Nkarta designed this site to suit the needs of its research activities and early studies.

At its smaller facility, the company is currently producing supplies of another treatment called NKX019, an investigational NK cell therapy designed to fight tumors expressing CD19 antigen for the treatment of B-cell malignant diseases. The company expects to start phase 1 studies in the second half of the year.

In addition to its own assets, as part of its most recent alliance with gene editing specialist CRISPR Therapeutics, Nkarta is working hard to discover potential CRISPR / Cas9 gene-edited cell therapies for cancer.

Under the agreement, the companies will develop and sell two CAR-NK cell candidates, one targeting the CD70 tumor antigen and the “other target to be targeted,” according to a joint statement.

With the upcoming manufacturing facility, Nkarta CEO Paul Hastings is confident that the “expanded presence will drive operational excellence and accelerate the development of transformative NK cell therapies for a wide range of cancers”.
