FREMONT, CA — A stretch of shoreline in Alameda was ready for summertime visitors after a Fremont teen, Faye Lin, led a cleanup that included more than 50 students and adults. Together, they collected over 350 pounds of trash.

“Their efforts were especially important right now as the endangered least terns are back in the area. They, along with many other sea birds, are at high risk from consuming plastics or becoming entangled in debris,” according to Ms. Liz Taylor, president of Deep Ocean Explore Research (DOER) Marine.

The group gathered on April 23. At the time, Lin was completing her junior year at Mission San Jose High School, but she reached beyond her immediate circle of friends to gather students from eight schools: Decoto School of Independent Study, James Logan High, J.F. Kennedy High, Washington High School, Mission San Jose High, Quarry Lane High School, Robertson High, Thomas Russell Middle School, and William Hopkins Junior High School.

May Guo told Patch that the conservation effort was moving, “It was inspiring to see so many different school students come together for a shared cause.”

A second cleanup is planned for Saturday. Both students and adults are invited to participate. You must register in advance. Read about details of the cleanup, and then sign up.

Lin has long been inspired by the ocean, becoming an open water scuba diver in Monterey Bay at just 12. Since then, she has conducted two award-winning science projects that focused on California giant kelp and sea star wasting disease. She is so passionate about the ocean that she started a chapter of a non-profit organization called AquaMeridian US earlier this year.

According to Gao, Lin’s goal is “to educate and inspire her peers about ocean conservation and how to take action to make a positive impact on the global community.”

Lin was a 2022 Regeneron International Science Fair finalist and two special awards winner.

Ariana Kallas has struggled her whole life to have the same experience as her peers and she’s continuing her efforts to catch Taylor Swift’s concert at Levi’s Stadium next month – and those in charge there are ready to help.

Kallas has been in a wheelchair since she was seven, having been diagnosed with a rare genetic disease when she was two years old. She is now 17 years old and recently graduated from El Camino High School in South San Francisco.

The Kallas family has eclectic tastes in music and often attend concerts together. They have attended several events at Levi’s Stadium and their father, George Kallas, said he usually buys ADA tickets or regular tickets and then exchanges them for ADA-accessible seats at the box office on the day of the show. Taylor Swift is Ariana Kallas’ favorite musician and her father rushed to buy tickets as soon as they went on sale in November. However, no ADA-accessible seating was available. He contacted the stadium and asked if they could exchange the seats he had purchased for ADA accessible seats, but was told there were no spares available, he said.

“I will be forced to carry her down the steep steps of the stadium and risk dropping her and injuring her and me,” said George Kallas. “She faces everyday challenges anyway. . . . If there is family home evening to watch some entertainment, why does it have to be difficult?”

Through a series of emails, George Kallas was told he needed to request the tickets and he later received a reply. Levi’s ADA exchange department responded in February that both of Swift’s shows were sold out and no ADA-accessible seats were available.

When it seemed like there weren’t many options left, Ariana Kallas took to Twitter. She noted that several other people with disabilities across the country had similar issues getting ADA accessible seats for the Taylor Swift show, she said. Her post caused a stir on Twitter, has been shared almost 30,000 times and has more than 330,000 views.

On Tuesday, Levi’s Stadium responded to the Kallases’ situation.

“We believe that everyone should have the opportunity to enjoy concerts and events at Levi’s Stadium, regardless of their accommodation needs. “There has been unprecedented demand for the Taylor Swift shows,” said a Levi’s Stadium spokesman. “ADA seats were made available as part of the original offering and have already sold out for fans requiring a variety of accommodations. We have reached out to the Kallas family and continue to explore possible solutions.”

George Kallas is happy that Levi’s Stadium is in touch with his family and is trying to work with his family to find a solution.

“I can’t wait to speak to them and I hope everything goes well because we’re looking forward to the show and I just want her to enjoy the evening with the family,” said George Kallas.

Taylor Swift is not only her favorite musician, but also Ariana Kallas’ role model.

“I love her music, but … it’s important to have a female role model like her,” said Ariana Kallas. “She was a really big advocate for women’s rights and LGBTQ and all of that stuff, and I think it’s really important that people have someone like that to look up to.”

But Ariana Kallas is a role model and advocate herself. During her time at El Camino High School, the school built a science wing and the only access to and from the building was by stairs or an elevator.

She emailed the principal and asked how she could exit the building in the event of a fire. Her concerns reached the principal and eventually the school built a bridge and decided to put up a plaque, naming it after Ariana Kallas, to recognize her commitment to people with disabilities.

When it came time to graduate, the school’s stage was not ADA accessible and she was told to roll in front of it to collect her diploma, but she resisted that too.

“She said no, I want to be able to get there at graduation and I want to cross that stage. I don’t want to roll in front of them, I want to cross them like any other kid,” said George Kallas.

The school responded to the problems and built a new stage with a ramp, he said.

“It has helped me not to be afraid to stand up for the rights of everyday people. I was in senior year when the bridge was built, so I realized that it might not help me much, but at least I know that future students who are in wheelchairs will do something that will help them helps,” said Ariana Kallas. “It’s nice to know that many people will have a better experience with these changes on campus.”

George Kallas said he just wants his daughter to continue to stand up for herself because the changes she pioneered at El Camino High School will be part of her legacy.

SAN FRANCISCO (KPIX) — A San Francisco high school student who saw a great need in her Chinatown community during a time of distance learning has launched a tutoring center to help struggling students.

Ella English came up with the idea during the height of the pandemic when she was just 15 years old.

The now 17-year-old incoming senior at Lick-Wilmerding High School is spending her summer running a free, fully fledged youth camp.

It was opened with just five students.

“A lot of them are first-generation. Their parents were immigrants and, actually, a lot of them are immigrants themselves,” English explained. “So we have special groups for them where tutors come in and they can speak Chinese and we make sure they can speak Cantonese or Mandarin so they can have that bilingual teaching lesson with them.”

English originally brought her idea to the non-profit Charity Cultural Services Center (CCSC) on Commerical Street. She recruited a few friends to help tutor and, once word spread about the free services, the students kept coming.

“I like to read. There are a bunch of books over there in the back and I like to draw,” said 9-year-old Cindy Pang.

“I like that you can learn things and I like that there are fun activities to do,” said 9-year-old Leqi Li.

Today, two years into the program, there are nearly 150 students and 50 tutors and counselors.

The San Francisco Department of Children, Youth and their Families took notice last year and provided funding to help pay tutors and expand its capacity through the Summer Together Initiative. The program also partners with the San Francisco Public Library.

“I started at 15. It seems really difficult in the world just for young adults to get involved — teenagers to get involved with problems and solve problems and just work to solve problems that they see in the world,” English said. “So I think it’s taught me that if I see an issue and I’m passionate about an issue I can dive right in. I should dive right in.”

English says her inspiration comes from her mother, a Chinese refugee who fled Vietnam. She had a hard time learning the language and assimilating when she arrived in San Francisco’s Chinatown, much like many of these students.

“I think their parents are really busy. They work a lot and supporting a family as an immigrant can be really challenging,” English said. “My mom tells me about her experiences and her parents experiences and how she definitely didn’t have opportunities like this when she immigrated. She kind of just sat at home.”

CCSC made contact with the Wah Ying Social Club building owner across the street when the tutoring center started to grow. The owner provided space at no cost when it’s not in use by the Chung Ngai Dance Troup and International Wing Tsun Association North America.

“We have a dire need, especially the pandemic have heightened the need of the community. Distance-learning, as we can see, affects more low-income families — more than the people that otherwise have resources,” said Ashley Cheng, executive director of Charity Cultural Services Center. “So proud of the growth that we’ve been able to see and the impact we’ve made in the community.”

The program runs year-round. The center is always looking for more tutors to serve the growing number of students.

“If I could say one thing I’m most proud of is just the impact we’ve had on the kids,” English said. “They come to camp just beginning to see their counselors, beginning to start their lessons. They go home not wanting to leave.”

    Betty Yu

SAN FRANCISCO — A San Francisco woman was arrested this week after police said she flew to Detroit and rented an Airbnb in a nearby suburb to meet with a teen.

Stephanie Sin, 32, rented an Airbnb in Royal, Oak, Michigan, authorities said, according to media outlets. She ordered an Uber to the home of a 15-year-old in nearby Novi to pick him up, authorities said. The teen told his parents when the ride arrived, and they called the police.

Officials suspect she talked to the teen for more than a year.

Mark Stanley Personette, 76, of Conifer, Colo., was arrested Thursday and charged with homicide in the death of 15-year-old Marissa Rolf Harvey, whose body was found in Sutro Heights Park on March 28, 1978. Authorities are now eyeing him as a suspect in other unsolved homicides.

This image provided by the San Francisco Police Department shows the Jefferson County, Colo., Sheriff’s Department booking photo of Mark Stanley Personette. On Thursday, Dec. 16, 2021, Personette was arrested in Colorado on suspicion of killing a teenage girl in San Francisco more than four decades earlier and detectives who cracked the case say he may be a suspect in other unsolved homicides. (AP)

The investigation had remained dormant for decades until October 2020, when the San Francisco Police Department’s cold-case unit reexamined the killing. The department said it had relied on “advanced investigative methods,” without going into detail.

San Francisco law enforcement shared few details about Personette, who lived 1,200 miles from The City by the Bay. Online records show he’s also charged with being a fugitive from justice.

“For more than four decades, Marissa Harvey’s family members have been relentless advocates to bring her killer to justice,” said San Francisco Police Chief Bill Scott, “We hope this development in the case begins to bring a measure of healing and closure they’ ve been too long denied.”

The victim’s mother, Marguerite Schultz, 86, declined to comment on the breakthrough. She said detectives told her to stay silent about the case because the investigation is still active.

Among the items on Marissa’s to-do list was horseback riding at the Golden Gate Park Stables, where her sister’s friend dropped her off, unaware that the stables were closed.

Investigators quickly hit a dead end — until recently. The police chief thanked forensic scientists and “other unsung heroes” for helping crack the case.

Cops shared information about Personette with other departments to determine if he’s linked to other cold-case assaults and murders.

GILROY (KPIX) – After an examiner failed a teenager who was driving a Tesla because of its unique braking system, the California Department of Motor Vehicles instructed its employees to treat electric vehicles the same way as traditional gasoline vehicles while they are behind the car driving -cycling tests.

Notice to agency staff will follow a driving test on November 23 at the Gilroy office, 6984 Automall Parkway.

CONTINUE READING: A’s, Giants players banned as MLB owners vote to trigger first job hiatus since 1995

Bryce Rosenblum, 16, began his driving test with the DMV instructor in a Tesla Model 3 with regenerative braking activated in standard mode.

“She warns me immediately that the car will slow down by itself, like a stop sign. And she told me that happened twice before we even left the parking lot. And then the test continues. We did everything a test should have. And then she pulled me in and told me I had failed, ”said Bryce Rosenblum.

The Model 3’s regenerative braking system, like most electric vehicles, is activated when the driver releases the accelerator. The system then recovers the vehicle’s kinetic energy, charges the battery and slows the vehicle down without using the brakes.

According to the teenager, the DMV instructor did not order him to disable the regenerative braking system.

In the comments section of the driving test results sheet, the driving instructor wrote: “The applicant did not slow down the car. Do not put your foot on the brake until the car has slowed down and stopped. “

“And so I asked her what I could do next time to pass the exam. And she told me not to take a Tesla and just borrow someone else’s car. Bring that from someone else who has an engine instead of a real electric car, ”said Bryce Rosenblum.

Bryce’s father, Neal Rosenblum, filed a complaint with the local office and escalated matters to the supervisor and regional manager.

Neal remembered talking to the teacher immediately after the failed test.

CONTINUE READING: San Francisco suspends cannabis tax to combat illegal marijuana sales

“This is a broken process,” said Neal Rosenblum. “In essence, what she said was that the car brakes on its own. And I said, ‘Okay, but that’s how the car works.’ And she said, ‘But he has to show me that he can actually move his foot from the accelerator to the brake.’ And I said, ‘Ma’am, the car wasn’t set up like that. If he takes his foot off the accelerator and starts to hit the brakes, the car will stop in the middle of the road. ‘”

Apparently, during driving tests, the agency was aware of problems with regenerative braking in electric vehicles for several months.

In August 2021, Teslarati released a report of a similar failed test.

According to the report, “the DMV inspector informed the Tesla owner that the ‘automatic activation’ of the Model 3 had failed. The examiner further explained that she could feel the brakes even if the physical brake pedal was not pressed. ”

The Teslarati report states that at this point the agency is “working to ensure that inspectors have an understanding of the function and its implications for driving”.

KPIX made a query to the agency’s Public Affairs Office regarding Bryce Rosenblum’s complaint and received a response a few hours later:

Thank you for your inquiry about the behind the wheel driving test from Bryce Rosenblum. DMV’s Field Operations Division has reviewed the driving test score sheet and determined that the driving test score will be revised as passed. The customer’s attention is drawn to the fact that his license should arrive soon by post.

The DMV has issued guidelines for staff on the use of plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEV) or electric vehicles (EV) equipped with a regenerative braking system and / or a single-pedal braking function for each driving test. If a customer is using a PHEV or EV with regenerative braking for their driving test, staff were advised not to postpone the test as the vehicle is equipped with a regenerative braking system and / or a single-pedal braking function. Follow the existing drive test criteria when evaluating the test and the application of the regenerative braking system must not be used as the sole reason for evaluating a driving error or a critical driving error.

The Rosenblum family praised the DMV for the prompt response.

“I mean, I have to take my hat off to make them move so fast because that was just amazing,” said Neal Rosenblum. “I think in the end I felt a little confirmed. So, yes, it felt good. “

“It’s kind of cool how fast they move because they’re known to be slow,” said Neal Rosenblum. “I think it’s important to stand by something you believe in. So if you believe in something strongly enough, you should fight for it. “

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) – A Northern California couple charged with forced labor for forcing three Guatemalan immigrants to work long hours in their businesses for minimal wages were charged with kidnapping a 13-year-old Las Vegas girl in 1997 .

A federal grand jury on Thursday filed a substitute indictment against Nery Martinez Vasquez and his wife Maura Martinez, both 52 and both from Shasta Lake, about 170 miles north of Sacramento, accusing them of conspiracy to commit kidnappings and kidnappings the Federal Prosecutor’s Office with.

In January 1997, the couple allegedly conspired to kidnap a 13-year-old girl from their Las Vegas home. They promised the girl’s parents to bring her back in a week. They then drove her to her home in Redding, California, and held her against her and her parents’ wishes for nearly two years. Martinez Vasquez is also said to have sexually molested and raped the girl several times, the prosecutor said.

Mark Reichel, who represents the couple, did not immediately return a message from The Associated Press asking for comment.

In 2019, the couple pleaded not guilty to forcing a Guatemalan woman and her two underage daughters to work long hours in their restaurant and caretaker service for little or no wages.

According to prosecutors, the couple, who are themselves naturalized citizens of Guatemala, brought the woman and their daughters to the United States in 2016 with temporary visitor visas. They are charged with hosting them after their visa expires and laying a false debt of $ 12,000 to prevent them from returning to Guatemala.

They are also said to have separated the mother from her daughters, threatened them with arrest and abused them physically, mentally and verbally, including beating the two girls with a stick.

The couple ran a restaurant called Latino’s and Redding Carpet Cleaning & Janitorial Services, according to the indictment.

The woman and her daughters had to live in “a dilapidated, unheated caravan without air conditioning and running water”. They humiliated her in front of her daughters and forced her to eat leftover food, the authorities said.

The abuse ended in February 2018, according to the indictment, but authorities did not say what happened to the woman and her daughters. The government also confiscated the property of the two defendants.

The couple faces 20 years to life imprisonment if convicted, officials said.
