An “intense and quick-moving” snowstorm struck portions of the Sierra Nevada and southern Cascades on Saturday, with weather officials warning travelers to avoid mountain travel through Sunday morning.

The National Weather Service issued a winter storm warning for the particularly conditions expected to pelt the mountain areas of the Sierra Nevada with up to 2 feet of snow at its highest peaks.

“It’ll become very difficult for Caltrans or any of the highway departments to clear the roads,” said Jeffrey Wood, meteorologist for the National Weather Service. “And with that heavy snowfall rate, you can experience near-whiteout conditions.”

Heavy snowfall accumulations were expected in Mount Shasta City, Dunsmuir, Donner Pass and Truckee, according to forecasts from the National Weather Service. Donner Summit should accumulate up to 2 feet of snow.

The heaviest of the snow pelts were felt Saturday morning into the afternoon, Wood said. Snowfall rates could reach up to 2 inches per hour.

“Typical snowstorms (are) a half an inch or an inch per hour,” Wood said. “Anytime we start to see snowfall rates greater than an inch is when we start seeing the real impactful conditions, particularly on roadways.”

Blizzard-like conditions were possible along Interstate 80 continuing into the evening. Gusty winds of up to 50 mph could snap tree limbs, cause power outages and lead to whiteout conditions. The California Highway Patrol enacted chain requirements for vehicles on I-80 over Donner Summit from Truckee to Eagle Lake late Saturday morning and reported spinouts and collisions by the afternoon.

Authorities shut down a portion of westbound I-80 in Truckee for just under two hours Saturday afternoon after multiple cars spun out on the road, according to the California Highway Patrol. Officials from Truckee Meadows Fires and Rescue said they had responded to several motor vehicle accidents on the road by Saturday night. The agency warned residents not to travel unless necessary due to the heavy snow conditions.

“SLOW DOWN!! ,” CHP Truckee posted on X, formerly known as Twitter.

Tahoe Daily Snow, which provides forecasting and measurements, reported accumulations of 2 to 3 inches of snow per hour in the upper mountains, with about 9 inches accumulated around 2 p.m. Saturday.

For those who need to travel, weather officials urge motorists to winterize their vehicles, prepare an emergency kit with warm clothes, food and water, and slow down on their routes.

The storm system also brought rain and gusty winds to the Bay Area on Saturday. Highs were barely in the 50s in San Francisco, where residents popped out their umbrellas during a heavy afternoon shower.

A San Francisco woman died Tuesday after falling over the edge of Eagle Falls near Lake Tahoe, authorities said.

The body of Ishrat Binta Azim, 25, was ultimately located in a pool of water on July 4 near Vikingsholm Trail by Emerald Bay State Park, roughly a mile away from the waterfall, according to Sgt. Alexander Sorey, a spokesman for El Dorado County Sheriff’s Office.

Sorey said officers first responded to a report of a woman going over the waterfall at 2:44 p.m.

Crews from local fire agencies and the California Highway Patrol assisted in Azim’s search, according to law enforcement.

Sorey said it is unclear how Azim went over the edge of the waterfall, but foul play is not suspected.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE — The Caldor Fire roared through drought-dried timber as it headed toward South Lake Tahoe Monday, reaching into the basin and forcing the city’s 22,000 residents to evacuate.

The mass exodus brought traffic to a standstill on all roads leading out of the city, and for a while residents stood outside their cars and trucks filled with suitcases and other belongings. By evening the roads were clear and South Lake Tahoe was deserted, with the glow of oncoming flame visible from the shoreline.

Late into the evening, dozens of crews were active along Highways 50 and 89 — the fire jumped Highway 89 south of the town of Meyers, just below South Lake Tahoe. They worked to extinguish the spot fires and embers being flung east with every new gust of wind.

“There are a ton of firefighters out there,” said Dominic Polito, a spokesman for Cal Fire. “Stamina, willpower, whatever you want to call it, they’re doing what they can.”

Earlier in the afternoon, flames jumped Highway 88 and were burning toward the Kirkwood ski resort. They scorched the west side of Thunder Mountain near the resort, between Silver Lake and Caples Lake, said Cal Fire assistant chief Brian Newman.

Firefighters prepared for the possibility that Caldor, fueled by fast winds and critically dry vegetation, could extend further toward South Lake Tahoe, threatening homes and businesses in the city. But crews benefited Monday by slower than expected winds in the basin, Newman said.

Just 15% of the 186,568-acre blaze was contained, Cal Fire reported Monday night. It torched more than 10,000 acres coming into Monday morning as it headed up Highway 50, breaching the summit at several locations, only the second time in state history that a wildfire burned from one side of the Sierra to the other. The first was the Dixie Fire, which started earlier this month, had burned 771,741 acres and was 48% contained.

Longtime Tahoe area resident Mel Smothers played his violin Monday while being stuck in 2 hours of eastbound evacuation traffic on Highway 50. Video: Alvin A.H. Jornada, Erika Betty Carlos

“There is fire activity in California we’ve never seen before,” Cal Fire Chief Thom Porter said at a briefing Monday.

Spot fires ignited over the summit near Echo Lake and below Echo Summit.

“There is fire in the basin,” the area that naturally drains into Lake Tahoe, Porter said, confirming what Lake Tahoe residents and homeowners feared for days. “It’s time to start going.”

Nearly 300 square miles of forest land has burned in the two weeks since the fire started, torching most of the town of Grizzly Flats and blackening hills for miles along Highway 50. Pollock Pines and Strawberry were largely saved.

The Caldor Fire has turned a 50-mile picturesque stretch of highway into an apocalyptic landscape of charred trees, piles of ash and twisted metal where cabins stood.

The possibility the fire could burn into South Lake Tahoe or the surrounding area seemed surreal to fleeing residents and the untold generations of visitors who spend their vacations on the slopes or at the shore.

Lisa Quick, 56, a South Lake Tahoe resident of 28 years, said fleeing her home with her family and two dogs was “horrible” and “terrifying.”

She feared what the Caldor Fire would do to her home and her community.

“I don’t just live here,” she said. “This town is part of who I am.”

Officials said the evacuation was orderly and followed a coordinated plan, and delays on roadways were not unexpected. By late afternoon, the flow out was steadier.

But not everyone hurried to the head of the line.

As dust swirled in the empty streets of South Lake Tahoe early Monday evening, Christine and William Smith seemed the only souls left in their Gardner Mountain neighborhood near the lake’s southern tip, where highways 50 and 89 meet.

They were headed out, in vehicles loaded with bikes, hitched to boats, and packed with the stuff of their lives.

“I feel like the firefighters are going to protect our neighborhood, but you just don’t know. They can’t make a miracle,” Christine Smith said.

So William Smith cleared their roof of pine needles and anything else that might catch fire, and he soaked the wood fence with water.

They would aim for Santa Cruz, where they have family, but stop first at the Crazy Good Bakery in town. They own it.

“I’m cautiously optimistic, but the fire is just over that hill,” William Smith said, gesturing toward Fallen Leaf Lake.

The Caldor fire has destroyed hundreds of homes in El Dorado County and threatened 21,000 more as it headed east toward Lake Tahoe and south toward the Amador County line.

One evacuee was Shaunte Dittmar, who fled her studio near Chistmas Valley, about 15 miles south of Lake Tahoe, with her cat Rasta. But they didn’t go far — just a bit east, up to Tahoe’s Lakeside Beach near the Nevada border.

There, blue skies and sunshine cast an idyllic glow over the open water that belied the thick blanket of gray smoke creeping closer over the mountains. Breweries and sporting-goods stores that would normally be packed with hikers, bikers and beachgoers sat empty.

This is the first time in 11 years that Dittmar has had to evacuate due to fire, but she was calm after packing up her skis and sleeping in her Subaru Sunday night.

“I mean, it’s mountain life. With everything going on, there’s no point getting all worked up,” said Dittmar, whose photography business has been upended by the pandemic.

Recently, things have been looking up as more couples have rescheduled their weddings. But now, as Dittmar debated whether to head to Nevada or the Bay Area next, she couldn’t resist the pull of the peaceful stretch of beach where she’d photographed a wedding in less complicated times.

“I just thought to come to the lake,” she said.

As the fire pushed forward 8½ miles over the weekend, officials described the growth as a “wake-up call” for what was in store this week.

“The firefighting conditions, the fuels, are historic,” Cal Fire Incident Commander Jeff Veik, said in a staff briefing Monday. “We will put this fire out. It’s not going to be today.”

Near the summit, Berkeley firefighters attempted to protect the City of Berkeley’s Echo Lake Camp, which has hosted families and youth camps for decades. Mayor Jesse Arreguin reported Monday afternoon that spot fires had reached the camp, and crews were forced to retreat.

“Weather conditions and the nature of this fire are dire,” he said in a social media post. “Too early to know outcome.”

While officials hoped that the blaze could be stopped before it reached Echo Summit, winds continued pushing the flames forward.

Weather conditions were expected to worsen — there’s a red flag warning in effect until 11 p.m. Wednesday, with winds pushing the fire uphill and embers lighting spot fires up to a mile ahead of the main blaze.

Should an ember land in vegetation, chances of ignition were extremely high given the parched fuels and low humidity, said Jason Hunter, a Cal Fire information officer.

Officials first issued an evacuation warning for all of South Lake Tahoe on Sunday night. Just before 10 a.m. Monday, mandatory evacuations were in place for Meyers and several parts of South Lake Tahoe. By noon, the whole city was told to empty out.

At the Tahoe Verde mobile home park on the southwest side of South Lake Tahoe, Erick Hurtado, 17, and his father, Hugo Hernandez, 34, prepared to evacuate Monday morning.

Standing in front of his home holding his white 1-year-old Chihuahua, Bun Bun, Hurtado said he was staying level-headed as they were ordered to flee.

“It’s just one of those things that, if you stay calm, it helps everyone, and you can get a plan together,” Hurtado said, adding his family planned to find safety in Nevada.

Meanwhile, Christina Ingram was in Fallon, Nev., tried to contact her grandfather, whom she believed had evacuated to the mobile home park from his home in Meyers just south of the city.

Speaking by phone, she became emotional thinking of the threat that the Caldor Fire poses to his home — and to the broader Tahoe region.

“That’s the last thing I would want, is for his house to go,” Ingram said. “It’s not just this fire. It’s been fire after fire. It feels like they can’t get a break.”

Those fleeing the blaze headed for hotels or rooms at the homes of friends or relatives. Others landed at evacuation shelters in Truckee and other communities including those in neighboring Nevada.

Nadia Beals, a 32-year-old resident of Tahoe Keys, pulled over at a gas station, hoping to refuel her pickup truck before heading to Reno. She had only a quarter tank of gas.

She tried to start the transaction, but the pump quickly canceled it. Then, for a moment, it appeared to start working, then canceled again.

Beals struggled to process the enormity of what was happening, as a steady line of evacuees inched forward. A sheriff’s deputy told her she might not be allowed back home for a week.

“I’m still trying to wake up from this nightmare,” Beals said before driving away without the gas. “It just feels so unreal.”

About two dozen people had come through a Red Cross shelter site opened Sunday night at the Veterans Hall in Truckee, with more expected Monday.

Robert Womack, Truckee emergency coordinator, said many people stopped by to ask about the status of their communities and homes, information that mostly wasn’t available yet, and continued on.

The wind, heat and smoky skies were ominous, even miles from the fire front, Womack said.

Lake Tahoe communities are familiar with wildfires, even ones that burn down lakeside, said Womack, who has lived in Truckee most of his life. But he said years past it would have been unthinkable that four major wildfires — Beckwourth, Tamarack, Dixie and the Caldor — would burn in Sierra Nevada crest communities in the span of two months.

“We’ve had fires close to the lake,” Womack said. “The idea of mega fires, fires more than 100,000 acres that we’re not able to contain or stop? It’s completely different.”

Meanwhile Meyers, which is an unincorporated community on the edge of South Lake Tahoe, was a smoky ghost town Monday after a mandatory evacuation was issued Sunday. Every business, including the Holiday Market and Meek’s Lumber and Hardware, was shuttered, with only a few empty cars sitting in parking lots. Only the faintest of treetops on the ridge nearby poked through the smoke along Highway 50.

While the town of Strawberry was largely spared over the weekend, homes and cabins along the highway burned as firefighters focused on the fire line farther up the mountain.

In nearby Stateline, Nev., casinos were shrouded in wildfire smoke, obscuring the area’s natural surroundings as a gloomy red sun rose over Lake Tahoe Monday morning. Cars streamed steadily out of town on Highway 50 as residents left South Lake Tahoe just across the California border.

Nearby, Barton Hospital in South Lake Tahoe began evacuating patients to other facilities early Monday, ahead of the mandatory orders that followed hours later, leaving only the emergency room open, officials announced on social media.

All national forests in the state will remain closed at least through Sept. 17, the U.S. Forest Service announced Monday evening.

North Tahoe Fire Department officials are warning residents of increased gas leaks and carbon monoxide poisoning in the area due to heavy snow blocking air vents and natural gas meters.

Since the beginning of the year, “danger calls” — related to gas leaks, carbon monoxide and other related emergencies — accounted for nearly “20% of all non-EMS incidents,” according to the North Tahoe and Meeks Bay Fire Safety Districts.

“Firefighters of North Tahoe are responding to a significant increase in CO emergencies across the region, many of which result in positive CO readings upon arrival, with occupants/patients presenting with symptoms of varying severity,” the districts said in a statement.

Many of these incidents, firefighters said, are the result of heavy snow accumulation on incinerator vents, underground vents, and improper or snow-covered home generator ventilation systems.

There has also been a surge in gas leaks from underground tanks, above-ground propane lines and underground natural gas meters affected by recent “repeated freeze-thaw cycles,” officials added.

According to fire department districts, gas leaks have also been reportedly linked to roof snow dumping and house snow clearing operations.

Firefighters recommend residents who want to clear snow from their properties not to stack snow around tanks, gauges, regulators, or piping, not to use sharp tools or force when removing snow from pipes, regulator tanks, and cylinders, and not to run tanks dry.

Tanks, authorities added, should be filled when they reach 30% to 40% and have a clear, accessible route for gas suppliers.

NORTHSTAR AT TAHOE (CBS SF) – A California Highway Patrol helicopter equipped with high-tech detection equipment began traversing the skies over the Northstar ski area Thursday morning in hopes of receiving a signal from an avalanche safety beacon who may have picked up missing truckee skier Rory Angelotta.

The Placer County sheriff said Angelotta was a skilled skier and reportedly had avalanche gear with her when he disappeared in a snow storm on Saturday.

So far, four days of searching in difficult weather conditions have found no trace of Angelotta.

Tracks in deep snow in a remote mountain area had raised hopes on Tuesday, but then found they were being pulled by a bear.

The last of a series of violent winter storms finally moved east early Thursday. As of December 21st, 135 inches – over 11 feet – of snow have fallen at Northstar.

According to the sheriff’s office, friends of Angelotta reported him missing when he failed to show up for Christmas dinner on Saturday night after a day of skiing. Authorities said his car was found in the resort parking lot and his calls went straight to voicemail.

The sheriff’s office said other resources put in to assist with the search were Tahoe Nordic Search and Rescue, Placer County Search and Rescue, Nevada County Search and Rescue, Butte County Search and Rescue, Bay Area Mountain Rescue, Tahoe Backcountry Ski Patrol and Northstar California Ski Patrol.

The search for the 43-year-old Truckee resident was hampered by harsh weather conditions that dropped more than four feet of fresh snow. Angelotta was last seen at the Northstar ski resort on Saturday morning.

The investigations have shown that Angelotta’s ski pass was scanned at the Comstockbahn at around 11.30 a.m. No other activity has been recorded on his passport since then.

LAKE TAHOE (CBS SF) – A winter storm warning is in place in the greater Lake Tahoe area through 10:00 p.m. Tuesday, as Sunday marks the start of a five-day series of storms in the Sierra Nevada, according to the National Weather Service.

Significant accumulations of snow of up to 8 feet at higher elevations are expected, accompanied by strong winds in excess of 160 mph along the ridges with gusts of up to 80 mph at lower elevations.

In addition, an avalanche watch was issued, with phases of high avalanche danger from Sunday evening to Wednesday morning between Yuba Pass (Highway 49) and Ebbetts Pass (Highway 4.). These conditions are the result of the heavy snow load on an already weak snowpack.

The weather service advises motorists to avoid traveling if possible and be prepared for hours of beaching. Those who need to travel are advised to bring emergency equipment with additional food, water, and clothing.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE (CBS SF) – As the containment of the massive Caldor fire tightened by the hour, the El Dorado County sheriff downgraded evacuation orders for many neighborhoods in South Lake Tahoe on Sunday to warnings, causing thousands of residents to return home houses can compete.

On Wednesday, South Lake Tahoe’s 22,000 residents were forced to evacuate their homes when a wall of flames raged over Echo Summit and descended the mountains toward the Lake Tahoe Basin. Thousands of firefighters were able to stop the advance in Christmas Valley and prevent it from crossing the city limits of South Lake Tahoe and the densely populated Pioneer Trail neighborhoods.

CONTINUE READING: Captured a series of San Jose Saturday sideshows on camera

Areas affected by the downgrade on Sunday included:

South Lake Tahoe City Limits – From the Nevada State Line west along Highway 50 to Tahoe Airport; Highway 89 from town northwest to the outskirts on West Way Pioneer Trail from State Kine west to Al Tahoe Blvd.

North of the City of South Lake Tahoe – All properties on the east (sea side) of Highway 89, which extends north from the city limits to Emerald Bay. All properties on either side of Highway 89, which extends north from Emerald Bay through Tahoma.

The sheriff said the area around Fallen Leaf Lake, Christmas Valley, Meyers and North Upper Truckee is under an evacuation warrant.

CALDOR FIRE:

By Sunday afternoon, the fire had grown to 215,400 acres and contained 43% – 8% more than Saturday afternoon.

In his briefing on Sunday morning, Tim Ernst, chief of operations for the Cal Fire West Zone, said the crews used another day of improving weather to strengthen control lines and increase containment.

“Yesterday (Saturday) we had another productive shift,” he said. “It was a bit drier with decreasing humidity, which always has an impact on the fire behavior for the day … We didn’t have any fire runs challenging us throughout the incident, we had a lot more hot spots pop up (along the western edge of the fire ) … They had no structural loss along the entire Eastern Zone (around South Lake Tahoe). You keep the scope constant. “

Giant-bladed bulldozers, crews armed with shovels, and a fleet of planes dropping hundreds of thousands of liters of water and fire retardants almost helped stop the fire from advancing.

“Things are clearly going in the right direction for us,” said Dean Gould, a manager with the US Forest Service.

CONTINUE READING: Former Windsor Mayor who resigned on sexual assault allegations will run again in 2022

While residents will return home for Labor Day, the wildfire has dealt a heavy blow to the region’s economy, which is heavily reliant on tourism, recovering from pandemic shutdowns this summer.

“It is a huge achievement for our local businesses and the workers who rely on a steady income to pay rent and bring food to the table,” said Devin Middlebrook, South Lake Tahoe Mayor Pro tem.

He said the closure will also harm the city as it receives most of its revenue from hotel taxes and sales taxes for police and fire departments, as well as road maintenance.

Hundreds of residents were allowed to return to their homes on the west edge of the fire near Pollock Pines on Saturday.

“We brought hundreds back to their homes,” said Ernest on Saturday. “On behalf of all of these people, I want to say thank you… The incident is looking better every day. We talked yesterday about being cautiously optimistic and we are continuing in that mode. ”

The wildfire ignited near Pollock Pines on Aug. 14 and evolved into a wind-whipped conflagration that devastated the El Dorado County’s Grizzly Flats community and eventually destroyed hundreds of homes before crossing the Echo along Highway 50 Summit to the outskirts of South Lake, Tahoe marched.

Cheryl Romaine was among those evicted from their homes. She woke up at home on Saturday morning.

“We’re happy to be home again, we missed our little retreat here,” she said. “Nothing like this has ever happened to us. We only evacuated for one day during the King Fire. And that wasn’t even mandatory. But this one must have gone crazy. “

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE (CBS SF) – A wall of flames from the Caldor Fire roared over Echo Summit on Highway 50 Monday night, hurtling down the mountainside toward the Lake Tahoe Basin, where thousands of residents were forced to evacuate their homes in a mass escape that clogged the few roads out of the region.

Flames burned on either side of the winding slope of Highway 50 – a popular stretch of road for visitors traveling to Tahoe – on Highway 89 and Meyers. There were reports that the fire shifted to the south end of Meyers on Monday evening.

CONTINUE READING: South Bay non-profit organization searches for homes to host Afghan refugees

Meanwhile, South Lake Tahoe – a community of nearly 22,000 people – has taken on the appearance of a ghost town. For hours, evacuees forced out of their homes had slowly escaped to safety. Among them was Mel Smothers, who got out of his vehicle and serenaded the drivers with his violin.

While traffic exiting South Lake Tahoe slowed to a crawl as thousands of residents fled the area – many said it took several hours to move just a mile or two – the streets were eerily quiet early Monday night and traffic-free.

KPIX reporter Katie Nielsen was there when firefighters were digging their last dig and trying to keep the Caldor fire from coming over the Echo Summit into the Tahoe Basin below when the wind continued to stir up just before 6 p.m. on Monday night and the Ignited flames.

That happens at the #EchoSummit on the #CaldorFiee. Winds try to blow the fire over the summit and down to the #TahoeBasin. Red Flag Winds are happening now. @KPIXtv pic.twitter.com/tvtdXap1HU

– Katie Nielsen (@KatieKPIX) August 31, 2021

Nielsen later reported from the mostly deserted streets of South Lake Tahoe when the fire broke out over the summit. The only people left were the residents who didn’t have cars to evacuate from the area. They were seen carrying backpacks and duffel bags with their belongings to the evacuation buses that would leave the area.

Evacuation centers have been established at the Douglas County Community Center at 1329 Waterloo Lane in Gardnerville, Nevada and the Truckee Veterans Hall at 10214 High Street in Truckee.

In the Sierra-at-Tahoe ski area, teams turned snowmaking machines into makeshift fire hoses. Authorities said the fire charred part of the land and surrounding trees, but firefighters were able to rescue all of the resort’s buildings and believe all of the chairlifts are still intact.

On Monday evening, the raging fire grew to more than 186,568 acres and was 15 percent contained. Three firefighters and two civilians were injured and a Galt police officer who was on his way to the police in the fire zone was killed in an accident.

At 11 a.m., the evacuation of the lower Lake Tahoe Basin was ordered. All residents have been instructed to exit the area east on Highway 50 toward Nevada.

– CAL FIRE AEU (@CALFIREAEU) August 30, 2021

Caldor Fire Chief Thom Porter said at a briefing on the state’s forest fires that the Caldor Fire has grown more than 20,000 acres since Sunday and the fire may have spread in all directions.

ALSO READ: Caldor Fire threatens beloved Camp Concord on the shores of Lake Tahoe

“Difficult road conditions, difficult to access. It burns in heavy wood, just very, very difficult conditions, ”said Porter. “We made progress sometimes. Last week I reported on how we effectively have an inversion that kind of curbs fire activity. But when the air clears, it’s like taking the lid off a pot of boiling water. Suddenly this cloud of heat and steam comes out, the same thing happens with a fire. It also sucks in oxygen from all directions, sets fires and punctures fires in all directions. That happened yesterday. “

Porter said after the flames hit Twin Bridges and the Sierra-at-Tahoe ski area, the fire was now in the Tahoe Basin with point fires in the Lower Echo Lake, Aloha Lake and Desolation Wilderness areas.

It was also the second time a forest fire has crossed one end of the Sierra to the other, another example of the state’s unprecedented forest fire situation.

“We haven’t had wildfires from one side of the sierras to the other,” said Porter. “We did that with the Dixie [Fire], now we have with the Caldor. Twice in our history and both happen this month. So we really need to be aware that there is fire activity in California that we have never seen before. “

Porter urged those in evacuation warning areas to consider early evacuation before issuing a mandatory evacuation order.

“Be ready now. Be ready now before there’s a warning, ”Porter said. “If there is a warning, you pack everything in the car and drive off, or you wait for the order and leave. Be ready now. “

The El Dorado County Sheriff’s Department had issued mandatory evacuation orders Monday morning for the west bank of Lake Tahoe from Emerald Bay to Tahoma on the Placer County line and then west to the border of the Desolation Wilderness.

The contract also included the residential and commercial park that leads to the intersection of Highway 50 and Lake Tahoe Boulevard – a popular junction to the casinos in Stateline – and the area east of the Pioneer Trail and south of the Heavenly Valley Resort Ski Area.

The evacuations came because the fire was advancing at frightening speed.

“We had gained over 25,000 acres,” said Tim Ernst, Cal Fire chief operations chief. “Yesterday it moved the fire about 8 1/2 miles east due to the change in weather.”

The fire made a run on Sunday from Strawberry on Highway 50 northeast to Echo Lake, where it burned Monday morning.

“A number of structures have been lost in this area,” said Ernst.

The task of containing the Caldor fire will not be easier for the fire department in the next few days. A red flag warning with hot temperatures, low humidity and strong winds applies to the region until Wednesday evening.

“Red Flag Warning now in effect and has been extended”

– NWS Sacramento (@NWSSacramento) August 30, 2021

To date, the flames have destroyed 472 homes – many in the fire-ravaged community of Grizzly Flats – and threatened an additional 21,451 buildings. In the small communities that line Highway 50 – a major artery between Sacramento and South Lake Tahoe – over 24,000 residents have been evicted from their homes.

On Sunday night, residents of Myers, Fallen Leaf Lake, Kirkwood and Christmas Valley were told to vacate their homes immediately when shacks burned near Camp Sacramento. Flames threatened the Sierra-at-Tahoe ski area, where giant snowmaking machines were used to wet the terrain and 25 additional strike teams were sent into battle to prevent flames from roaring in South Lake Tahoe.

As a precaution, officers also used school buses and ambulances to evacuate Barton Memorial Hospital in South Lake Tahoe.

CALDOR FIRE:

“Today was a tough day,” said Jeff Marsolais, National Forest Supervisor of El Dorado, at a press conference on Sunday evening. “There are no bones. I think the team is doing an excellent job of staying ahead of a very developing fire … Today it let go. “

Erich Schwab, chief of Cal’s fire department, said the brightening of the sky on Sunday triggered rising pyrocumulus clouds that lashed the flames on the eastern edge of the massive flame.

“To put it in perspective, we’ve seen about half a mile of movement around the perimeter of the fire every day for the past few weeks, and today this has moved 2.5 miles with us with no sign of it so is starting to slow down, “he said at the press conference on Sunday evening.

And now a warning for gusty winds and bone-dry humidity should come into effect on Monday at 2 p.m.

The fire spread to the north side of Highway 50 and started on Ralston Ridge. The crews took defensive measures to protect the buildings south of the Sierra-at-Tahoe ski area, but night photos from the resort showed flames approaching the ski lifts.

Near Camp Sacramento, the fire burned several huts along Mt. Ralston Road on Sunday evening.

Tahoe is an attractive vacation spot for Bay Area residents, especially with Labor Day weekend approaching, but South Lake Tahoe Fire Department chief Clive Savacool said if they’re in the area they must go.

“Tourists should be gone,” he said. “If someone is still here as a tourist, they have to pack and go. Everyone who doesn’t have to be in South Lake Tahoe has to get out now. “

Among the many other challenges faced by the 3,500 firefighters fighting the flames is terrain that creates its own wind.

“This fire is in an area with multiple deep, steep drains,” said Steve Volmer, a fire behavior analyst with Cal Fire. “We have a saying: ‘Where water flows, there is wind.’ So you can see all of the problem areas of the fire that we had problems in those deep, steep drains along Highway 50 … They (the winds) keep sending out point fires along Highway 50, down in Camp Creek and Slug Canyon. “

These spots are ignited 3/4 of a mile before the main fire.

Volmer said the flames were also fueled by the area’s fire history.

“Right now we have a lot of heavy, dead down material in this fire area,” he said. “The area has very little fire history dating back to 1940 and almost no recorded fire history prior to 1940. There are large numbers of extremely large diameter logs that are still on fire. They are still burning down and still producing all the smoke. “

The firefighters will also look at the weather conditions to warn of the red flag over the fire zone, which will develop early Monday and will extend into Tuesday.

Cal Fire meteorologist Jim Dudley said winds will reach up to 35 miles per hour at the upper elevations near Echo Summit.

“These will start Sunday night and increase the speeds on Monday and they will last through Monday night and Tuesday,” Dudley said of the winds.

Highway 50 is still closed from the Sly Park Road exit to the Highway 89 interchange in Meyers.

EL DORADO NATIONAL FOREST (CBS SF) – The Caldor Fire, burning in the Sierra Nevada, has become the country’s top fire fighting priority, and the chief of Cal Fire acknowledged the potential threat to the Lake Tahoe area on Monday afternoon.

The wildfire has burned 106,562 acres, or nearly 170 square miles, in the El Dorado National Forest since it began east of Omo Ranch and south of Grizzly Flats parish on Aug. 14. A five percent containment was reported on Monday.

CONTINUE READING: COVID: CSU Chico data breach leaked student requests for religious exemptions

Cal-Fire Thom Porter told reporters at a news conference Monday that Caldor Fire is a top priority in fire-fighting resource allocation because of its proximity to Tahoe.

“It’s so important,” he said. “There is a knock on the door to the Lake Tahoe Basin. We have made every effort to keep it out of the pool, but we also need to be aware that it is possible because of the way the fires burned. “

After a week of no containment, fire officials reported five percent containment on Monday, and further containment is expected later in the day, particularly along the south edge of the fire.

At a press conference for the California governor’s Office of Emergency Services Monday afternoon, officials announced that two Galt police officers were seriously injured in a head-on collision on Highway 99 early Sunday morning while trying to help in the Caldor Fire. Two other civilians were injured in the fire last week.

As of Monday, at least 403 homes had been destroyed by the fire and more than 17,000 homes and other buildings were threatened. Six commercial properties were destroyed along with 148 other smaller structures, Cal Fire said. The cause has not yet been clarified.

Downhill winds, low temperatures, and moderate overnight humidity helped slow the fire from spreading.

Operations chief Tim Ernst said Monday the toughest area of the fire continues to be around where it originated, with the flames continuing to storm towards Grizzly Flats, where dozens of homes were burned in the wildfire last week.

“To solve this problem, we are installing a lot of emergency lines and bulldozers, and last night we did a long fire operation to remove some of the fuel from the fire,” said Ernst. “But the fire continues to challenge us in this area.”

After jumping on US Highway 50 over the weekend, Ernst said there was no extensive fire growth past Highway 50 overnight and the crews on the northern edge of the fire were busy with extensive building defense and preparation.

On the western edge, a significant amount of work has been done around the Jenkinson Reservoir and Sly Park area to connect the existing fire lines, Ernst said. The eastern tip of the fire continues to be a challenge, as daily winds from the southwest push the fire in an easterly direction.

More of the southern perimeter was expected to be contained later Monday.

Melissa Gustafson was among the residents of the area who were forced to flee their home. She and her family of seven had to leave their room at the Best Western in Placerville that weekend and stay with relatives in the San Francisco Bay Area.

Her bill was several hundred dollars and it was paid by a good Samaritan.

“A lady behind me (in the checkout line) was (with) Cal Fire and told me she would take my bill for me,” said Gustafson, fighting back tears. “I was just so happy! We have nothing. What do you do when you have nothing? “
