2034 World Cup would bring together FIFA’s president and Saudi Arabia’s Prince Mohammed

GENEVA (AP) — The near certainty that Saudi Arabia will host the 2034 men’s World Cup unites two of the most influential men in world sports. There’s the leader of soccer’s governing body and the kingdom’s crown prince. Under President Gianni Infantino, FIFA has become increasingly involved in Persian Gulf nations looking to make their mark in global soccer. Critics call that involvement part of a hunger for money that risks the sport’s integrity. Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, for his part, has been spearheading a massive Saudi investment in athletics, including soccer and golf. Critics call that sportswashing — using athletic endeavors to clean an image. Saudi Arabia stands alone in the 2034 bidding contest after Australia declined Tuesday to enter a fast-track FIFA process.

Frustrated Big Ten coaches push for league to discipline Michigan for sign-stealing, AP sources say

There is mounting pressure on Big Ten Commissioner Tony Petitti to discipline Michigan and coach Jim Harbaugh for a sign-stealing scheme. Pettiti heard from frustrated and angry Big Ten coaches during a video call Wednesday, according to two people with knowledge of the meeting. The NCAA is investigating Michigan for impermissible in-person scouting. A Michigan staffer is alleged to have sent people to future opponents’ games for the purpose of video recording signals. The NCAA’s enforcement process is slow moving, but Big Ten bylaws provide the commissioner leeway to act on competitive integrity issues.

The NBA’s In-Season Tournament is finally set to begin, giving teams another trophy shot

The NBA’s In-Season Tournament starts Friday and runs through Dec. 9. Games will have a new look with brightly painted courts, and Commissioner Adam Silver finally has the second trophy that teams can play for. Group play games will be held every Tuesday and Friday in November except for Election Day when the NBA will take the night off. The semifinals are in Las Vegas on Dec. 7 and the title game is there two nights later.

Bochy adds to legacy with 4th World Series title, and 1st for Rangers, in his return to majors

The longer Bruce Bochy was away from baseball, the more he missed the game. And missed winning, too. Now, he has another World Series title to celebrate. The first season of Bochy’s return to the bench ended with the first championship in Texas Rangers history. The veteran manager added to the three World Series he won with the San Francisco Giants from 2010-14 before stepping down after the 2019 season. He is the sixth skipper to earn four titles, but the 68-year-old Bochy is the only one of them to take home championships with more than one team. He is the third manager to win the World Series in both the American and National Leagues.

Corey Seager earns second World Series MVP, joining Sandy Koufax, Bob Gibson and Reggie Jackson

PHOENIX (AP) — Corey Seager was voted the World Series Most Valuable Player after leading the Texas Rangers over the Arizona Diamondbacks for their first title. Seager joined Hall of Famers Sandy Koufax, Bob Gibson and Reggie Jackson as the only two-time World Series MVPs. He also won the award in 2020 for the Los Angeles Dodgers. Seager hit three two-run homers in the Series, then broke up Zac Gallen’s no-hit bid with a leadoff single and scored in the Rangers’ 5-0 victory in Game 5, giving Texas the World Series in five games.

Innovative motion offense a trademark of Bob Knight’s legacy

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Dusty May started his student manager career doing Indiana’s dirty work. Somehow between wiping up sweat, chasing rebounds and filling water bottles, he took enough mental notes to stake a coaching career on Bob Knight’s lessons. Those studies helped him take Florida Atlantic to its first Final Four. And while doesn’t run Knight’s trademark motion offense quite the way his mentor did, he saw no reason to chuck out the principles that helped the Hall of Fame coach win three national championships in 42 seasons.

Bills’ Damar Hamlin expects to be excited and emotional in return to Cincinnati

ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. (AP) — Buffalo Bills safety Damar Hamlin says he has nothing to worry about in preparing to return to Cincinnati for a game against the Bengals some 10 months since his near-death experience. Hamlin tells The Associated Press he’s thrilled while expecting to experience numerous emotions in returning to the stadium where he went into cardiac arrest and had to be resuscitated on Jan. 2. The 25-year-old enjoyed a remarkable recovery and completed a courageous bid to resume his playing career. Hamlin is not expected to suit up after being a healthy inactive in all but one of Buffalo’s eight games this season.

Clippers’ top brass says James Harden will make the sacrifices necessary to contend for a title

LOS ANGELES (AP) — James Harden is a superstar joining a team already loaded with stars. The Los Angeles Clippers’ top brass believes he will thrive in their galaxy. Clippers coach Tyronn Lue says he isn’t sure when Harden will make his debut following the blockbuster trade that brought the 10-time All-Star and 2018 NBA MVP home to Los Angeles from the Philadelphia 76ers. But Lue believes that when Harden plays alongside Kawhi Leonard, Paul George and Russell Westbrook this season, all four will make the adjustments necessary to turn the Clippers into a prime contender for Harden’s first NBA title.

Raiders bench Garoppolo, try to move forward under interim coach Antonio Pierce

HENDERSON, Nev. (AP) — The Las Vegas Raiders fired offensive coordinator Mick Lombardi on Wednesday. Quarterbacks coach Bo Hardegree was promoted to offensive coordinator. Aidan O’Connell has replaced starting quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo. The chances came the morning after the club fired coach Josh McDaniels and general manager Dave Ziegler. Antonio Pierce is the Raiders’ interim coach and Champ Kelly the interim GM. Las Vegas hosts the New York Giants on Sunday. Pierce played for the Giants from 2005-09.

Iga Swiatek says female tennis players are united as they seek improvements from the WTA

CANCUN, Mexico (AP) — Iga Swiatek says she and other women’s tennis players are more united than in the past as they seek changes on the WTA Tour, including improvements to prioritize the athletes’ well-being. Swiatek said at the WTA Finals on Wednesday that players are not happy with some things. Some players recently outlined various concerns in a letter to WTA CEO Steve Simon and during two meetings with tour leadership. Among the topics were a guaranteed income and coverage for maternity leave and injury absences, along with an objection to a planned change in rules governing mandatory tournament appearances. Swiatek is a four-time Grand Slam champion who was ranked No. 1 until September.

Disney says DeSantis-appointed district is dragging feet in providing documents for lawsuit

ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) — Disney says Walt Disney World’s governing district made up of Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis’ appointees is dragging its feet in providing requested documents to the company in a lawsuit over who has design and construction powers over Disney’s sprawling theme park resort in central Florida. Disney on Thursday accused the Central Florida Tourism Oversight District of “dodging its obligations.” Disney asked a Florida judge to delay any decision on whether the case should proceed until the company gets documents and conducts depositions needed to argue against a summary judgement requested by the district. A hearing is scheduled for mid-December.

US consumers keep spending briskly even in the face of persistent inflation and high interest rates

WASHINGTON (AP) — An inflation gauge that is closely monitored by the Federal Reserve showed price increases remained elevated in September amid brisk consumer spending and strong economic growth. Prices rose 0.4% from August to September, the same as the previous month. And compared with 12 months earlier, inflation was unchanged at 3.4%. Taken as a whole, the figures the government issued Friday show a still-surprisingly resilient consumer, willing to spend briskly enough to power the economy even in the face of persistent inflation and high interest rates. Spread across the economy, the strength of that spending is itself helping to fuel inflation.

FTX founder Sam Bankman-Fried acknowledges in court that customers were hurt but denies fraud

NEW YORK (AP) — FTX founder Sam Bankman-Fried has begun testifying at his fraud trial, saying the innovative business he had hoped would move the cryptocurrency ecosystem forward ended up hurting customers instead. The onetime cryptocurrency golden boy lost his businesses and his reputation as a pioneering entrepreneur when a rush of customers withdrew their money last year, exposing that billions of dollars were missing. His much-anticipated testimony Friday became the centerpiece of a defense that insists Bankman-Fried had no criminal intent as he took actions that prosecutors say were directly to blame for the collapse last November of Bankman-Fried’s businesses.

Twitter takeover: 1 year later, X struggles with misinformation, advertising and usage decline

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — One year ago, billionaire Elon Musk walked into Twitter’s San Francisco headquarters with a white bathroom sink and a grin, fired its CEO and other top executives and began transforming the social media platform into what is now known as X. X looks and feels something like Twitter, but the more time you spend on it the clearer it becomes that it’s merely an approximation. Musk has dismantled many core features of Twitter, but what X will become, and whether Musk can achieve his ambition of turning it into an “everything app” that everyone uses, remains unclear.

General Motors and Stellantis in talks with United Auto Workers to reach deals that mirror Ford’s

DETROIT (AP) — General Motors and Jeep maker Stellantis are meeting with United Auto Workers bargainers to see if they can reach a contract agreement that mirrors a deal signed with crosstown rival Ford. Nearly 17,000 striking workers at Ford left the picket lines when the agreement was announced Wednesday night and will return to work shortly. About 57,000 Ford workers still have to vote on the tentative deal. GM and Stellantis will have to follow the pattern set by Ford or it’s likely that UAW President Shawn Fain will add factories to its partial strikes that began on Sept. 15.

Many Americans say their household expenses are outpacing earnings this year, AP-NORC poll shows

NEW YORK (AP) — About two in three Americans say their household expenses have risen over the last year, but only about one in four say their income has increased in the same period. That’s according to a new poll from The Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research. As household expenses outpace earnings, many are expressing concern about their financial futures. What’s more, for most Americans, household debt is rising or not going away. About half say they currently have credit card debt, 4 in 10 are dealing with auto loans, and about one in four have medical debt. Just 15% say their household savings have increased over the last year.

As the ‘Hollywood of the South,’ Atlanta has boomed. Its actors and crew are now at a crossroads

ATLANTA (AP) — For more than a decade, work had been nonstop in Atlanta’s booming film industry thanks to Georgia’s extremely generous tax break. Dubbed the “Hollywood of the South,” metro Atlanta became ubiquitous as a backdrop for huge projects, including Marvel films and “Stranger Things.” But work dried up last winter and has been at a near-standstill ever since the industry’s writers went on strike in May and the actors joined them in July. Writers reached a deal late last month, but with the actors strike still ongoing, many Atlanta-based performers and behind-the-scenes crew members members are grappling for financial survival.

Abercrombie & Fitch slapped with lawsuit alleging sexual abuse of its male models under former CEO

NEW YORK (AP) — A former model for Abercrombie & Fitch has sued the fashion retailer, alleging it allowed its former CEO Mike Jeffries to run a sex-trafficking organization during his 22-year tenure. Jeffries left Abercrombie in 2014. While there, he converted the chain from an struggling retailer of hunting apparel to a seller of must-have teen clothing. But he faced criticism for the company’s sexualized marketing, including billboards and beefy models that alienated potential customers who didn’t fit into its image. The lawsuit comes after a BBC report earlier this month that raised similar allegations against Jeffries and his partner Matthew Smith.

Stock market today: Wall Street falls, pulling S&P 500 down 10% from its July peak

NEW YORK (AP) — Stocks closed lower on Wall Street, pulling the S&P 500 down 10% from the peak it reached in July. That puts the benchmark index into what’s called a ‘correction.’ The declines came amid the latest batch of earnings from big technology and energy companies and some mixed readings on the economy. The S&P 500 fell 0.5% Friday, its 10th loss in the last 12 days. The Dow fell 366 points, and the Nasdaq composite rose 0.4%. Treasury yields held steady following a mixed report on inflation, consumer spending and incomes. Higher yields in the bond market have been helping to knock stocks lower since the summer.

Cruise, GM’s robotaxi service, suspends all driverless operations nationwide

NEW YORK (AP) — General Motors’ Cruise says it’s suspending its driverless operations nationwide as the robotaxi service works to rebuild public trust. The announcement arrives just days after California regulators revoked Cruise’s license — after determining that its driverless cars, which recently began transporting passengers throughout San Francisco, posed dangers to public safety. U.S. regulators have also been investigating Cruise’s operations, after receiving incident reports that suggested risks to pedestrian and passenger safety. The choice to suspend its driverless services isn’t related to any new on-road incidents, Cruise says. Human-supervised operations of Cruise’s autonomous vehicles, or AVs, will continue.

Autoworkers reach a deal with Ford, a breakthrough toward ending strikes against Detroit automakers

DETROIT (AP) — The United Auto Workers union says it has reached a tentative contract agreement with Ford that could be a breakthrough to end the nearly 6-week-old strikes against Detroit automakers. The four-year deal still has to be approved by 57,000 union members at the company. It could bring a close to the union’s series of strikes at targeted factories run by Ford, General Motors and Jeep maker Stellantis. The Ford deal could set the pattern for agreements with the other two automakers, although no other agreements were announced Wednesday.

Grandpa Google? Tech giant begins antitrust defense by poking fun at its status among youth

WASHINGTON (AP) — Google is beginning its defense against a federal lawsuit accusing it of illegally thwarting competition for its ubiquitous search engine. Thursday’s testimony came from a top executive who talked about the precarious nature of the company’s success. Prabhakar Raghavan, a senior vice president at Google, testified at federal court in Washington as the tech giant defends itself in the biggest antitrust trial in the last 25 years. He described Google as a company beset by competitors and sometimes derided by younger people as “Grandpa Google.” The Justice Department accuses Google of using anticompetitive tactics to maintain dominance in internet search.

US economic growth accelerated to strong 4.9% rate last quarter as consumers shrugged off Fed hikes

WASHINGTON (AP) — The nation’s economy expanded at a robust 4.9% annual rate from July through September as Americans defied higher prices, rising interest rates and widespread forecasts of a recession to spend at a brisk pace. The economy expanded last quarter at the fastest pace in more than two years — and more than twice the 2.1% annual rate of the previous quarter. Thursday’s report on the nation’s gross domestic product — the economy’s total output of goods and services — showed that consumers drove the acceleration, ramping up their spending on everything from cars to restaurant meals.

Stock market today: World shares rebound following latest tumble on Wall Street. Oil prices gain $2

HONG KONG (AP) — World shares have advanced and oil prices jumped about $2 after the Israeli military said its troops and tanks had briefly entered northern Gaza. Shares rose in most major markets apart from Paris. U.S. futures also advanced. Worries that the latest Israel-Hamas war might lead to a wider conflict, disrupting oil supplies from elsewhere have been pushing oil prices higher. On Thursday, the S&P 500 fell 1.2% for its ninth drop in 11 days. The Nasdaq composite fell 1.8% and the Dow sank 0.8%. Worries that the latest Israel-Hamas war might lead to a wider conflict, disrupting oil supplies from elsewhere in the region, have been pushing oil prices higher.

Norfolk Southern investing in more automated inspection systems on its railroad to improve safety

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Norfolk Southern has installed the first of what will be more than a dozen of a new generation of automated inspection portals on its tracks in Ohio — not far from where one of its trains derailed in February and spilled hazardous chemicals that caught fire. The new portals are equipped with high-speed cameras that will take hundreds of pictures of every passing rail car to help quickly identify defects on moving trains. The pictures are analyzed by artificial intelligence software. Other major railroads have invested in similar inspection technology to supplement — and where regulators approve it, replace — human inspections. University of Delaware railroad safety expert Allan Zarembski said it’s significant that Norfolk Southern is investing in so many of these portals.

Europe’s central bank halts rate hikes as war in the Middle East casts a shadow over the economy

FRANKFURT, Germany (AP) — The European Central Bank has taken a break from interest rate increases. The pause announced Thursday follows 10 straight hikes, dating back to July 2022. That record pace of hiking was aimed getting painful inflation under control. But now inflation is down, and the Israel-Hamas war is casting a shadow of uncertainty over the global economy. There are fears about rising oil prices. With that backdrop and concerns growing that high credit costs used to fight inflation might slow economic growth and tip Europe into a recession, the ECB held rates at a record-high 4%.

Will Ivanka Trump have to testify at her father’s civil fraud trial? Judge to hear arguments Friday

NEW YORK (AP) — Former President Donald Trump’s civil business fraud trial is turning to the question of whether his daughter Ivanka will have to testify. Friday’s court session is set to start with a hearing on the issue. Ivanka Trump has been dismissed from the case, and lawyers for her father, her brothers and their business contend that she shouldn’t have to testify. New York state lawyers say she should. They argue that the former Trump Organization executive vice president has relevant information. It’s unclear how soon she would testify if ordered to do so.
What’s that bar band playing “Jumpin’ Jack Flash”? Oh, it’s the Rolling Stones!

NEW YORK (AP) — The Rolling Stones celebrated the release of their first collection of new original songs in 18 years with a club gig in Manhattan Thursday before a few hundred invited guests. The rock legends performed seven songs, four of them from the new “Hackney Diamonds” disc, which is out Friday. But they had time for a few favorites. “You might be familiar with this one,” singer Mick Jagger said before Keith Richards began the opening riff to “Jumpin’ Jack Flash,” instantly trumping the thousands of bar band versions of the song attempted in the 55 years since its release. Only this time, the band at the bar in New York’s Meatpacking district was the Rolling Stones.

In it, the pop superstar gives her personal take on events that have made headlines for decades. They include her relationship with Justin Timberlake and the emotional challenges of an abortion and painful breakup. The Associated Press obtained a copy of the book Thursday. The book also discusses the custody fight with ex-husband Kevin Federline that helped lead to a public meltdown that would end with the courts, and her father, taking control of her life. There is plenty of positivity in “The Woman in Me” too, including discussions of the origins of her hits and a dedication to her two sons.

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — San Francisco police say a man who crashed a car at the Chinese Consulate earlier this month was armed with a crossbow and arrows and swung a knife at officers before a police sergeant killed him. San Francisco Police Acting Commander Mark Im says an officer opened fire after Zhanyuan Yang failed to comply with orders to get on the ground and swung his knife toward the officer and a security guard. A bystander calling 911 said Yang had a gun, but police did not find a gun on him. Police have not released a motive for the attack.

Southern California university mourns loss of four seniors killed in Pacific Coast Highway crash

Authorities have arrested a 22-year-old driver on suspicion of manslaughter. Officials say he lost control of his BMW and hit at least six pedestrians after smashing into parked vehicles along the Pacific Coast Highway in Malibu.

News outlets report that Smith told the crowd at the Enoch Pratt Free Library on Wednesday night that Pinkett Smith was his best friend on this planet and said he’d “show up for her and support her” for the rest of his life. Smith’s appearance was apparently a surprise for Pinkett Smith and came at the end of a talk about her book, “Worthy.”

Federal forecasters predict warm, wet US winter but less snow because of El Nino, climate change

The upcoming United States winter looks likely to be a bit low on snow and extreme cold outbreaks, with federal forecasters predicting the North to get warmer than normal and the South wetter and stormier. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Thursday winter outlook predicts a strong El Nino will heavily moderate and change the storm tracks of what America is likely to face from December to February. Most of the country is predicted to be warmer than normal with that warmth stretching north from Tennessee, Missouri, Nebraska and Nevada, along with nearly all of California.

New York State Police said in a statement that Charlotte Sena was located Monday evening in good health and that a suspect was in custody. Gov. Kathy Hochul said law enforcement officers arrested 47-year-old Craig Nelson Ross Jr. in a trailer on his mother’s property and rescued Sena, who was also in the trailer. Hochul says Ross was identified as the suspect after he left a ransom note in the mailbox at Sena’s home. The governor named Ross as the suspect late Monday night and it wasn’t immediately known if he had a lawyer to comment on his behalf.

Kimmel will host Arnold Schwarzenegger. Jimmy Kimmel will greet Matthew McConaughey to “The Tonight Show.” The writers last week struck a deal with an alliance of Hollywood’s biggest studios, streaming services and production companies.

Powerball jackpot rises to $1.2 billion after another drawing without a big winner

FORT LAUDERDALE, Florida (AP) — The Powerball jackpot climbed to an estimated $1.2 billion after no one beat the immense odds and won the giant prize. The winning numbers drawn Monday night were: 12, 26, 27, 43, 47 and the Powerball 5. The prize on the line for the next drawing Wednesday night has grown so massive because there have been 33 consecutive drawings since someone won the jackpot. The odds of winning the jackpot are 1 in 292.2 million. The $1.2billion jackpot is for a sole winner who takes an annuity, paid annually over 30 years. Winners taking the cash option would receive an estimated $551 million.

SAO PAULO (AP) — More than 100 dolphins have died in the Brazilian Amazon rainforest in the past week due to a severe drought, and many more could be affected if water temperatures remain high. The Mamiraua Institute, a research group of Brazil’s Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation, said two more dead dolphins were found on Monday in the region around Tefe Lake, which is key for mammals and fish in the area. Thousands of fish have also died, according to local media. Experts believe high water temperatures are the most likely cause of the deaths.

95-year-old painter threatened with eviction from Cape Cod dune shack wins five-year reprieve

PROVINCETOWN, Mass. (AP) — A 95-year-old painter and his family who were threatened with eviction from their dune shack at the Cape Cod National Seashore in Massachusetts have won a reprieve. Lawyers for the painter worked out a deal with federal officials allowing Salvatore Del Deo and his family to continue living in the shack for another five years. The shack is one of a number dotting the more remote reaches of the seashore in Provincetown. Salvatore’s son Romolo Del Deo said the family fought the eviction citing their decadeslong connection to the shack. The family was abruptly evicted by the National Park Service during the summer when it opted to start a bidding process for some of the shacks.

Heavy rains flood the streets of Chicago, forcing NASCAR to abandon a downtown street race

CHICAGO (AP) — Heavy rains have flooded the streets of Chicago, forcing the cancellation of a NASCAR race through downtown. The National Weather Service said up to 6 inches of rain fell in the Chicago suburbs by midday. The Illinois State Police said portions of Interstate 55 and Interstate 290 were closed due to flooding and at least ten cars were trapped in water near Pulaski Road, a major north-south thoroughfare in the city. NASCAR announced that the Xfinity Series race, which was scheduled to finish in the city’s downtown area, was canceled due to weather.

The web designer quoted a client in the Gay Rights Supreme Court ruling as denying having made a request for a wedding site

DENVER (AP) — A Colorado web designer who was allowed by a US Supreme Court ruling to refuse to create a wedding website for gay couples had cited a request from a man who said he never asked to work with her. The contested motion was not the basis for the federal lawsuit preemptively filed by web designer Lorie Smith seven years ago. But as the case progressed, her attorneys referred to it as Colorado state attorneys pressed Smith on whether she had reasonable cause to sue. The revelation detracts from Smith’s victory. Friday’s ruling is widely seen as a setback for gay rights.

Affirmative Action for Whites? Admissions for older universities are being put to the test again

WASHINGTON (AP) — Following a Supreme Court decision removing racial segregation from the admissions process, colleges are under renewed pressure to end traditional preferences, the practice of favoring applicants with family ties to alumni. Long seen as a benefit to the white and wealthy, opponents say it is no longer sustainable in a world where there is no counterbalance to positive action. President Joe Biden suggested that colleges should reconsider this practice after the court ruling, saying the preferences of the tried and true “expand privilege rather than opportunity.” For critics of outdated approvals, the renewed debate over regulatory equity offers an opportunity to win public opinion over to their cause.

Car crashes into New Hampshire restaurant, injuring dozens, man stuck in bathroom

LACONIA, NH (AP) — Rescue workers in New Hampshire say a car crashed into a busy restaurant, injuring more than a dozen people. The Laconia Fire Department said the vehicle struck the Looney Bin Bar & Grill just after 12:40 p.m. Sunday. Restaurant owner Michelle Watson says the car crushed a man in the bathroom. Rescuers transported 14 people with leg injuries, cuts and bruises to hospitals and treated 20 others at the scene. Watson said everyone jumped in immediately to make sure people were okay, but the damage to the building was significant and she wasn’t sure when it would reopen.

According to media reports, four people were injured in an explosion in a building in downtown Tokyo

TOKYO (AP) — An explosion at a building in Tokyo’s Shimbashi business district has shattered windows and belched smoke, injuring four people, ministry officials say. According to the Tokyo Fire Department, the blast happened Monday at a restaurant on the second floor of an eight-story building. Two people inside were injured and two pedestrians were hit by broken glass. A local owner, who was among the injured, told police the explosion occurred when he lit his lighter, NHK said. Further information, including the cause, was not available so far.

Elon Musk imposes daily limits on reading posts on Twitter

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Elon Musk has capped the number of tweets Twitter users can see each day. He described the restrictions as an attempt to prevent unauthorized tapping of potentially valuable data from the social media platform. The site now requires users to log in to view tweets and profiles. That’s a change in longstanding practice that allows anyone to read the babble. The restrictions could result in users being banned from Twitter for a day after scrolling through several hundred tweets. Thousands of users complained on Saturday that they could not access the site. Musk said after facing backlash that he will raise the thresholds on how many tweets accounts can read per day.

Prosecutor in Hunter Biden case denies retaliation against an IRS agent who spoke with the House GOP

WASHINGTON (AP) — The federal prosecutor leading the investigation into President Joe Biden’s son Hunter has dismissed claims that he was prevented from pursuing criminal charges in Los Angeles and Washington. And the investigator denies retaliating against an IRS official who disclosed details of the case. US Attorney David Weiss in Delaware responds in a letter to Republicans in the House of Representatives. Weiss is defending the lengthy investigation into Hunter Biden’s financial dealings, which ended last month with an appeal to the Justice Department likely sparing Biden a stint behind bars. Weiss also makes it clear that the case is an ongoing criminal investigation and he has little else to divulge at this time.

Passengers were stuck because United Airlines canceled their flights. The CEO took a private plane

The United Airlines CEO apologizes for jumping on a private plane this week while thousands of his airline’s customers were stranded because their flights were cancelled. CEO Scott Kirby said Friday that taking a private jet was the wrong decision. He says it was insensitive to United Airlines customers waiting to get home and he apologizes to customers and airline employees. He promises to do better in the future. Kirby took a private flight from New Jersey to Denver on Wednesday. United canceled 750 flights that day. That’s a quarter of his schedule.

The tallest flagpole in the world. A small town in Maine. An idea intended to unite people divides them

COLUMBIA FALLS, Maine (AP) – In the United States, many people think bigger is better. But some residents of a small Maine community are reluctant to measure patriotism by the size of a flagpole. Located on the eastern tip of the state, Maine’s Down East region is where sunlight kisses the east coast of the United States for the first time each day. This is where the vast wilderness and the sea meet. It’s also where a patriotic family proposed the world’s tallest flagpole — one that would be taller than the Empire State Building, with a giant American flag at the top. The proposal should unite people around the flag and create jobs. Instead, community and cultural hotspots are exposed.

Elon Musk imposes daily limits on reading posts on Twitter

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Elon Musk has capped the number of tweets most Twitter users can see each day.

After several turbulent days, flight disruptions are easing despite concerns over 5G signals

Airline passengers, who have suffered tens of thousands of weather-related flight delays this week, got a welcome respite from the headache on Saturday, despite concerns over possible disruption from the rollout of new 5G wireless systems near major airports. Data compiled by tracking service FlightAware shows that flight delays and cancellations have declined from the spikes seen earlier in the week. Another tracking service shows that the cancellation rate in the US is around 1% on Saturday afternoon. A spokesman for the US Department of Transportation said air traffic has returned to “near normal” levels.

How the Supreme Court Student Loan Decision Affects You

NEW YORK (AP) — The Supreme Court has ruled that the Biden administration exceeded its powers in attempting to eliminate or reduce student loan debt, effectively nullifying the $400 billion plan. The court’s decision means that barring an order from Congress, these Americans can expect to be paid beginning in October. Still, borrowers concerned about their budget have options. For example, the government has other loan relief programs that are still in effect even after Biden’s plan has been scrapped.

Apple is now the first publicly traded company, valued at $3 trillion

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Apple is now the first public company to close a trading day with a market value of $3 trillion. This marks another milestone for a tech giant that has transformed society with a range of products that are stunningly profitable. Apple shares ended Friday up 2.3% at $193.97, taking its market value to $3.04 trillion. Apple is one of the few tech companies, including Microsoft and chipmaker Nvidia, to have helped the S&P 500 post a nearly 16% gain in the first half of the year.

Nokia renews patent license agreement with Apple for 5G and other technologies

HELSINKI (AP) – Network infrastructure and 5G technology provider Nokia has signed a new long-term patent license agreement with Apple to replace the current deal between the two companies, which expires at the end of the year. The deal, which allows Apple to use the Finnish company’s technology in its products, covers Nokia’s inventions in 5G and other technologies. The terms of the contract remain confidential. Nokia expects to begin generating revenue related to the agreement in January 2024, and the company said the agreement is consistent with its long-term guidance released in the first quarter.

Sánchez is visiting Kyiv on the day Spain begins the EU presidency to underscore the bloc’s support for Ukraine

MADRID (AP) – Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez has kicked off Spain’s six-month presidency of the European Union with a lightning visit to Kiev to underscore the bloc’s support for Ukraine in the face of Russia’s invasion. Sánchez arrived in the Ukrainian capital by train from Poland early on Saturday. The Spanish government said he would address Ukraine’s parliament at 08:30 GMT (4:30 a.m. EDT) and then meet with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. The two will hold a press conference around 10:30am GMT (6:30am EDT). Zelenskyy announced the visit on Thursday in an address to European leaders gathered for a summit in Brussels. He emphasized the symbolism of the visit and the importance of the next six months for Europe.

The King of the Netherlands apologizes for his country’s role in slavery on the 150th anniversary of the abolition of slavery

AMSTERDAM (AP) — King Willem-Alexander of the Netherlands has apologized for his country’s role in slavery and asked for forgiveness on the anniversary of the abolition of slavery in the Dutch colonies. During an emotional speech on Saturday, the king said he had commissioned a study into the role of the Royal House of Orange-Nassau in slavery. Recent research found that the king’s ancestors earned what is today’s equivalent of $595 million from it. Willem-Alexander said, “I beg your pardon for the apparent inaction in the face of this crime against humanity.” On July 1, 1863, slavery was abolished in Suriname and the Dutch colonies in the Caribbean. Most of the enslaved workers were forced to work on the plantations for another decade.

Russian attacks in Ukraine claim three dead and 17 wounded. Spain emphasizes European support for Kyiv

KIEV, Ukraine (AP) – Ukrainian officials have reported that three people were killed and 17 others wounded by Russian shelling in the east and south of the country. Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez’s visit to Kiev began on Saturday as a sign of continued support from Madrid and the European Union for Ukraine’s fight to evict invading Russian forces from its sovereign territory. Sanchez told Ukraine’s parliament, “We will be by your side for as long as necessary.” Sanchez also promised further shipments of heavy weapons, including Leopard tanks. At a press conference with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, Sanchez announced that Spain would continue to supply Ukraine with heavy weapons, including four Leopard tanks and armored personnel carriers, as well as a portable field hospital.

The Russian media watchdog blacklists media associated with mercenary boss Wagner

Russia’s media regulator has blacklisted at least five media outlets linked to Wagner mercenary boss Yevgeny Prigozhin and blocked their websites in Russia. The move came a week after Wagner militants seized control of a Russian military headquarters and invaded Moscow in what appeared to be an attempted insurgency. Since Saturday, websites of the RIA FAN news agency and four online news portals controlled by Prigozhin’s media holding Patriot have appeared in the Communications Inspectorate’s online register of blacklisted websites. Unconfirmed reports in Russian news outlets on Friday claimed that Prigozhin himself ordered Patriot’s closure. He and his fighters evaded prosecution and were granted sanctuary in Belarus last week.

The Supreme Court rules for a designer who doesn’t want to create wedding websites for gay couples

WASHINGTON (AP) — The conservative majority of the Supreme Court has ruled that a Christian graphic artist who wants to design wedding websites can refuse to work with same-sex couples. The decision is a defeat for gay rights. The court ruled Friday 6-3 in favor of designer Lorie Smith, despite a Colorado law prohibiting discrimination based on sexual orientation, race, gender and other characteristics. Smith argued that the law violated her right to free speech. Smith’s opponents warned that a win for her would allow a number of companies to discriminate against customers. Judge Neil Gorsuch wrote for the court’s six conservative justices that the First Amendment envisions the United States where people “have the freedom to think and speak what they choose.”
