Billionaire Elon Musk said Tuesday he will move the headquarters of private company SpaceX and social media site X from California to Texas, calling Governor Gavin Newsom's decision to sign a new law on student gender identity “the last straw.”

The law, signed Monday, prevents school districts from requiring teachers to inform parents of changes in a student's gender identity or sexual orientation without the child's consent. It also requires the state Department of Education to provide resources for families of LGBTQ+ students in seventh grade through high school.

“This is the last straw,” Musk wrote on X. “Because of this law and many others before it that attacked both families and businesses, SpaceX will now be moving its headquarters from Hawthorne, California to Starbase, Texas.”

Elon Musk said SpaceX will move its headquarters to Texas. REUTERS

Musk added that he “made it clear to Governor Newsom about a year ago that laws like this would force families and businesses to leave California to protect their children.”

In another post, the billionaire added that the headquarters of X, the social media site formerly known as Twitter, will be moving from San Francisco to Austin, Texas.

“I'm tired of dodging gangs of violent drug addicts just to get in and out of the building,” Musk wrote on X.

Critics argue that the bill is too invasive and undermines parents' rights. One group opposing the bill, the California Family Council, said it “undermines their fundamental role and puts boys and girls in potential danger.”

Meanwhile, supporters said the bill would provide necessary protections for transgender students whose parents live in disapproving households. The law takes effect in January.

In a separate response to an X post by “All In” podcast host Jason Calacanis, Musk said the law would cause “many families and businesses to move out of California.”

“Who would want to risk having their children taken away from them by the government?” Musk said.

Texas Republican Governor Greg Abbott said Musk's move “solidifies Texas' leadership in space exploration.”

The Post has reached out to SpaceX for further comment.

Musk had already moved the physical headquarters of his electric car maker Tesla from California to Texas in 2021 after confrontations with Newsom and other local authorities over their pandemic policies.

In a separate move, Tesla moved its headquarters from Delaware to Texas earlier this year. Musk pushed for the change after a Delaware judge rejected his pay package on the grounds that it was excessive.

PACIFICA — A San Francisco State University student was swept out to sea Thursday morning while swimming at a beach in Pacifica, according to authorities.

SF State student Hamzah Alsaudi, 22, was reported missing after he went swimming with two friends Jan. 19 at Esplanade Beach in Pacifica. (Courtesy of Pacifica Police) Courtesy of Pacifica Police

Hamzah Alsaudi, 22, a senior who wrestled at the school, had not been found as of Friday afternoon.

The incident was reported around 10:30 a.m. at Esplanade Beach. Alsaudi was swimming with two other people when he was struck by a “large wave and pulled farther away from the shore,” the Pacifica Police Department said in a news release.

Alsaudi’s companions made it back to shore and called 911 for help, police said.

Pacifica police officers and North County Fire Authority firefighters searched the area without success, police said. The U.S. Coast Guard also helped look for the student.

While residents at the nearby Oceanaire Apartment Homes complex said emergency crews were present through the night, there were no search-and-rescue operations visible off the beach around midday Friday and it was not clear if the search would resume. The Coast Guard did not respond to calls for comment.

Pacifica police described Alsaudi, a Santa Monica native, as 6’1” tall, 215 lbs. with brown hair. He was last seen wearing black shorts.

The university issued a statement Friday afternoon:

“Our hearts go out to the family, friends and classmates of beloved student and athlete Hamzah Alsaudi who remains missing following yesterday’s tragic accident. We are grateful to the Coast Guard and the Pacifica Police Department for all they have done. Campus resources are available for the members of our community who need assistance during this difficult time.”

At Manor Beach Friday, a single bouquet of flowers hung from a fence post. Neighbors described an extensive rescue scene the night before, with water, air and ground crews searching the area throughout the night.

Several signs in the vicinity of Manor and Esplanade beaches warned of dangerous rip-current conditions. Surf was high Friday morning, with waves nearly reaching the Manor Beach cliffside.

An ocean-safety page from the California Department of Parks and Recreation warned about swimming in such conditions, saying “large surf, cold water temperatures, backwash, sudden drop-offs, pounding shorebreak, and dangerous rip currents can turn what seem like safe activities such as playing near the surf line, wading, or climbing on rock outcroppings, deadly.”

Swimmers caught in a rip currrent are advised not to fight the current, but to swim out of the current in a direction parallel to the coastline; if they are unable to swim out of the current, they should remain calm and attempt to signal for help.

Dos Pueblos celebrated Wednesday during a signing ceremony at Sovine Gym that its senior squad of student athletes advanced to the next level in 2023.

Fourteen Chargers were introduced and praised by their trainers during the luncheon ceremony.

The student-athletes signing college bids are: Makeila Cervantes (Pomona Pitzer for indoor volleyball), Avery Ball (Messiah College for lacrosse), Emma Gilbert (Harvard for water polo), Ava Bennett (Pomona Pitzer for water polo), Ryan Speshyock ( Stanford for baseball), Chloe Hoffman (Stanford for beach volleyball), Lucy Speier (University of San Francisco for beach volleyball), Maddie Nees (Embry-Riddle Aeronautical for lacrosse), Tyler Jamieson (University of Colorado-Colorado Springs for cross country/track). ), Luci Koroshec (Westmont College for Cross Country/Track), Phoebe Wolfe Lyons (Claremont-McKenna for Cross Country/Track), Brynn Graham (UC Davis for Swimming), Cooper Costello (University of Chicago for Swimming), Nikko Carrillo ( Wagner University of Swimming).

This was the 16th year that Dos Pueblos recognized all of its graduate student-athletes who signed college offers.

“We had 4-5 students that we recognized in the first year,” Feldhaus recalls. “We started small and now we have arrived at this great event. It’s one of my favorite activities we do here.”

He said the ceremony was started to recognize the achievements of the student-athletes.

“Their dedication goes beyond the pool, the field and the court. These students also met their academic requirements to achieve this goal. They were successful in class and were able to balance their sport at a very high level.”

Graham is looking forward to swimming for coach Matt Macedo at UC Davis. He formerly coached at UCSB and was twice named Big West Coach of the Year.

She said the team environment under Macedo “is simply the best I’ve seen and that’s what really interested me about the whole program.

“I wanted to go to a Division 1 program and UC Davis felt really good in both science and swimming.”

Wolfe Lyons said Claremont McKenna was her choice from the start.

“I wanted a small liberal arts school and I knew I wanted to run (at the NCAA Division 3 level). I made an overnight visit there at the end of September. I was planning a trip back east as I was checking out some other places. But after the visit, to stay with the team, learn about the culture and take a class, I said I wanted to be here.”

She thanked her team at DP for helping make this signing day possible.

“Our team was the best. I wouldn’t be standing here today if my teammates weren’t the best people ever and just made me happy, made me run faster and made me a better person.”

Koroshec and Jamieson were part of DP boys’ cross-country teams that competed in back-to-back CIF state championships.

Jamieson said that “qualifying for the state two years in a row with this group of guys, Orlando Ye, Luci” was his highlights as a DP athlete. “The whole process with them and then the last two years has been really special.”

Koroshec said that the highlights of his high school career were making a standing in his junior year and then being the first DP team finisher at the championships last season.

As for running in college, “It’s super exciting, I’m over the moon,” he said. “I didn’t even think about going to Westmont until earlier this year. When I first started meeting Coach (Russ) Smelley and the team, I said, ‘Yes, this is the place for me to continue to grow as a student and as an athlete.’

The University of California Board of Regents today granted financial and project approvals for Student Housing West to allow the campus to move forward with development. The campus will be soliciting bids for the first phase of the project later this year, with a goal of beginning construction in early 2024.

Student Housing West accommodates more than 3,000 students. The project, which spans two campus locations, also allows UC Santa Cruz to expand childcare services.

Student Housing West offers the quickest, most direct route to creating more student and graduate housing. Stable, affordable housing is a foundation for academic success, one of the highest priorities on campus.

“An education at UC Santa Cruz is transformative, and studies have consistently shown that students must meet basic needs in order to be successful. Student Housing West will help us meet the housing needs of our students,” said Chancellor Cynthia Larive. “I am grateful that we are finally moving forward with this project.”

A number of local elected officials offered their support for the project. Santa Cruz Mayor Fred Keeley traveled to San Francisco for the Board of Regents meeting and told UC leaders that he supports the university and Student Housing West and that the Santa Cruz City Council voted unanimously in support of the project have voted. County Supervisor Zach Friend also pushed for approval, citing the tremendous local need for more college housing and the connection between housing and student success in a letter to the board.

In the first phase of the Student Housing West project, UC Santa Cruz will build 140 new two-bedroom apartments for students with families, a community room and a daycare center. The new early childhood education center will accommodate up to 140 children of faculty, staff and students, approximately double the capacity of our current facility. The new Family Student Housing Community will be adjacent to the intersection of Hagar and Coolidge Drives, across the street from existing staff housing, near a local elementary school and near the main campus entrance. The new shared apartment is expected to open for students with families in autumn 2025.

After construction of the new Family Student Housing Community, UC Santa Cruz will remove the aging buildings currently housing students with families so the campus can construct six new buildings that will provide housing for approximately 2,700 undergraduate and 220 graduate students. The campus anticipates that the second phase could be completed in fall 2028.

There are currently limited on-campus housing options for high school undergraduate and graduate students. Many of these students must find housing in the surrounding community, which, like much of the state, faces a severe housing crisis.

All of these new beds on campus are in addition to the approximately 600 that the campus is adding through the ongoing renovation and expansion of Kresge College.

In addition to providing significantly more housing, Student Housing West will advance the campus’ longstanding commitment to sustainability. The project includes solar panels and other energy-efficient design features, as well as a water recycling facility that will allow UC Santa Cruz to reuse wastewater for non-potable purposes such as toilet flushing and irrigation.

Regents certified the project’s environmental impact report and approved the terms and conditions and design in March 2019. The project has since been mired in court, with lawsuits challenging Regency approval and EIR certification. The Santa Cruz County Supreme Court has twice upheld the appropriateness of the EIR, as has the Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals. Regents re-approved the project in March 2021. A final appeal from a project opponent is pending.

“The development of Student Housing West is a milestone for our campus and I’m happy for the students who will ultimately benefit from it, but university leadership understands that a single project will not solve our housing problems,” Chancellor Larive said. “We will continue to tirelessly seek additional housing options for our students, faculty and staff.”

frequently asked Questions

What will happen to student accommodation west?
To advance plans to build housing for more than 3,000 students, UC Santa Cruz secured funding and project approvals from the UC Board of Regents. This means the campus can solicit bids to build a new residential complex for students with families at the intersection of Hagar and Coolidge drives. This first phase of the project will include 140 two-bedroom apartments, a community room and a new early childhood education centre.

When will construction of the first phase start?
UC Santa Cruz will be soliciting construction bids later this year, with a goal of beginning construction in early 2024. The Family Student Housing community is expected to open in fall 2025.

When will construction of the second phase start?
Once the new residential community for family students opens, UC Santa Cruz will be able to demolish aging buildings and construct new housing for upper division undergraduate and graduate students along Heller Drive on the west side of campus. This phase of the project will include six new buildings that will provide housing for approximately 2,700 undergraduate and 220 postgraduate students. The campus expects this construction to be completed by fall 2028.

Why was the project delayed?
Student Housing West was first approved in early 2019, despite lawsuits preventing the campus from meeting its original schedule for building more housing.

How has funding changed?
UC Santa Cruz has received approval from the UC Board of Regents to implement Student Housing West as a campus-managed capital project. The project was originally proposed and approved as a public-private partnership. Shifting to UC funding is cheaper than private funding and allows UC Santa Cruz to move forward in the most cost-effective and expeditious manner without further delays from ongoing litigation.

After working two jobs in order to make ends meet and then getting laid off from a local oilfield service company, Jaime Moran is finally employed at a steady job for one of Midland’s most respected HVAC companies. In July 2021, he began working at The Bosworth Company, but he had to overcome several obstacles to get there.

Approximately 22 years ago, Moran’s mother made her way to California from Mexico when she was pregnant with him. As a single mother with two small children (Moran and his older sister Daisy), it was difficult to make ends meet in a new country, so she returned to Culiacán, Sinoloa, Mexico, and became an English teacher.

Jaime and Daisy grew up in Culiacan. Daisy eventually married and moved to Midland with her husband. After graduating from high school in Culiacan and obtaining an electrician certificate, Jaime wanted to study architecture in Mexico.

“It was very difficult to get accepted into a Mexican university because I was born in the United States and had never become a Mexican citizen,” Moran explained. “Typically Mexican universities only accept Mexican citizens.”

So, Moran decided to follow his sister to Midland to see if he could get a job and start college in the United States. First, he had to learn English.

“Even though my mother taught English in Mexico, we never really spoke it,” Moran said. “So, I enrolled in ESL [English as a Second Language] courses at the Midland College Cogdell Learning Center. I also discovered that I needed to obtain my GED certificate before I could get into a college in the United States, and I needed a job. I didn’t want to impose on my sister and brother-in-law to support me.”

So, Moran began working the 4 am-2 pm shift at JumBurrito and also worked from 4 to 11 pm at Mr. Gatti’s Pizza.

“Working those hours didn’t give me much time for anything else,” he said. “I also didn’t have a car. I would either walk to work or get an Uber. When my manager at JumBurrito found out that I was walking to work in the dark, she was nice enough to drive me to work in the mornings. I had also moved out of my sister’s house and moved in with a friend, but it was just a one-bedroom apartment, so I slept on an air mattress in the living room.”

After maintaining this grueling schedule for approximately one year, Moran was hired by a local oilfield service company.

“My goal was to take the GED exam and then start college, but I was working 18- to 24-hour shifts,” he explained. “The pay was good; I rented my own apartment and purchased a car, but I still didn’t have time to pursue my dream of furthering my education.”

In the summer of 2020, during the COVID pandemic and the subsequent downturn in the energy industry, Moran was laid off from his job.

“I told myself, ‘That’s it — time to get serious about going to college,'” Moran said. “So, I spent about a week studying for the GED exam and then took the exam and passed. Now, I could enroll in classes and work toward a career with steady employment. I did a little research and discovered that Midland College offered HVAC training. Since I already had some electrician training in Mexico, I thought that HVAC would be a good fit for me.”

Moran enrolled in the Midland College Air Conditioning, Heating & Refrigeration Technology program in fall 2020. By July 2021, he had obtained enough training to get an entry-level technician job at The Bosworth Company.

“I love working for Bosworth,” he said. “They are a great company and really value their employees. Most days I work normal hours — 8 am to 5 pm Working normal, steady hours is something new for me. It gives me more time to be with my girlfriend, family and friends.”

Moran is continuing to take evening classes at Midland College and will receive a certificate in Air Conditioning, Heating and Refrigeration Technology this coming July. He said that The Bosworth Company is encouraging him to complete the certificate program.

Moran is just one of many MC students pursuing certificates and degrees in applied technology programs, ranging from Welding, Auto Technology, Air Conditioning, Heating and Refrigeration, Energy Technology and other hands-on programs.

The Midland West Rotary Club is helping students in MC’s Applied Technology programs through scholarship assistance. On March 11, the club will host its “Shoot for the Future” clay shoot at Windwalker Farms in Stanton. Proceeds from the fundraiser will benefit scholarships for MC Applied Technology students.

“The Midland West Rotary Club recognizes that students in the Applied Technology fields are often overlooked,” Tom Jones, Midland West Rotary Club vice president, said. Yet these students are vital to the Permian Basin economy.”

“It means a lot to me to be able to have a steady job where I can earn a good living,” Moran said. “It was a long, hard road to get to this place in my life, but I’m glad I made the decision to return to my birth country and have been given the opportunity to pursue a career that I enjoy.”

For more information about the Midland West Rotary Club’s Shoot for the Future clay shoot fundraiser, visit the Midland College website at www.midland.edu/clayshoot

Rebecca Bell is the executive director of Institutional Advancement at Midland College.

A San Francisco college student rented a Tesla and embarked on a road trip nearly a week ago, and his frantic family says they haven’t heard from him since. “PLEASE PLEASE keep on the lookout for him!” Jerry Liang posted on Instagram after losing contact with his brother Christopher. “I’ve attached pictures of him and the rental car (white Tesla) he was driving. PLEASE share this Instagram post on your story to increase visibility. My family is offering 10k dollars to the person who gives us the lead to his finding. You can reach me at jerryliangglobal@gmail.com.” A San Francisco police spokesperson told SFGATE that the department had not been made aware of the case, and that a report had been filed with police in Irvine, California, where Christopher was supposed to meet up with friends but later broke his plans. His brother said the family is especially worried because of the “erratic nature of this trip” and his sibling’s “mental health issues.” “I am at my wit’s end and am now reaching out to the public for help,” Liang wrote.

TYLER, Texas (KETK) — Tyler ISD had a helping hand in passing new legislation that will allow high school students to be licensed as a Tradesman Limited Plumber after taking the required amount of CTE plumbing courses in high school and subsequently passing the state board examination .

East Texas community sends food, resources to those devastated by Kentucky tornadoes

This revolutionary opportunity for students was made possible by Texas House Rep. Matt Schaefer, who added the amendment to HB 636 during this year’s legislative session. Now, the bill is law and students can easily be trained in plumbing in high school and immediately join the industry upon graduation.

“We cut the red tape that had closed doors for students to learn the plumbing trade in public schools. Now, the plumbing trade will open to thousands of students who will be able to turn that training into success immediately. Restoring real-world skills training to students and giving them more options to succeed is good for all Texans. Tyler ISD was instrumental in helping me pass this law. We are seeing interest in starting plumbing courses in public schools all over Texas, and we are excited.”

Rep. Matt Schaefer

Gary Brown, executive director of college and career for Tyler ISD, was also instrumental in the passage and implementation of the new law. “I testified in Austin at a committee hearing in support of Rep. Schaefer’s legislation,” Brown said. “Once the bill became law, I worked with Rep. Schaefer’s team, Texas Education Association (TEA), State Board of Educator Certification (SBEC), State Board of Education (SBOE), and the Texas State Plumbing Board of Examiners (TSBPE) to develop the implementation plan.”

Prior to the bill’s passage, anyone seeking a plumbers license was required to complete a minimum of 4,000 hours working under a master plumber to be eligible to take the test. However, under the new program created by the bill, Tyler ISD can provide classroom training and work-based learning experiences in high school.

Huntington Highsteppers share experience of performing at 80th anniversary of Pearl Harbor

Brent McDonald, owner of Rub-A-Dub Plumbing in Tyler, also tested in support of the legislation. McDonald is on the Tyler ISD Career and Technology Education (CTE) Executive Advisory Board that provides industry insight and gives feedback on curriculum, instruction, and equipment to Tyler ISD.

“We are thrilled that these future plumbers will be stepping into a high-demand, high-wage career,” said Brown. We will offer four levels of study with classes taught by a Master Plumber.”

The new CTE plumbing program will be open to students beginning in fall 2022.

Despite the city’s urgency to maintain a police presence on the campus of South San Francisco’s Unified School District, the school’s liaison officers are likely to go missing early in the new school year after the district’s board of trustees decided to postpone its final vote until one full board can be present.

District trustees met for a special meeting Wednesday, August 4th, possibly to finalize a letter of intent with the city and its law enforcement agency to outline the role of SLOs on campus.

The South San Francisco City Council unanimously endorsed the latest draft of the MOU during a special session on July 28, with some members sharing the hope that the board would meet in time to approve the agreement before the new school year.

The urgency of the city was driven by the board’s decision to suspend the SLO program, which bans officials from entering campus except in an emergency until an agreement is reached. However, as CEO Daina Lujan was absent from the meeting due to illness, trustee Patricia Murray recommended that the board postpone its discussion until all voices can be heard.

“Your voice was an important voice and I think your voice should be heard,” said Murray.

Vice President Mina Richardson agreed to the recommendation, noting that the board could end in a draw. Richardson highlighted her concern that the presence of officials on campus made the facilities appear less secure than secure.

She also asked if the district officials had recorded any information suggesting the program was benefiting the students from public speakers during the meeting.

Dr. Ryan Sebers, director of the student union, said the district had seen a 78.6% decrease in student lockouts since the school year, from 1,645 lockouts in 2006-07 to 352 in 2019-20. Expulsions also fell by 90% from 61 cases in 2006-07 to six in 2019-20.

He attributed the improvements to parents, educators, and the district’s investment in mental health counseling and support programs.

“I was … pleasantly surprised to hear these numbers when you first presented them, and I am still impressed, but at no point have I heard you say this is the result because of the SLO program,” said Richardson. “This program has been around since the 1980s and I think it is time we reevaluated it. That moment is long gone. ”

Discussions about the SLO program began a year ago after school district officials determined that there was no formal agreement. City and school district governing bodies also met with community approval for the program, with former and current students, teachers and affected members of the public pleading with the district to end its partnership with the police for good.

The intent of the MoU is to clearly define when SLOs should or should not be involved in student disciplinary matters and programs. As outlined in the draft MOU, campus staff are supposed to handle most disciplinary matters internally, unless the code of education states otherwise, a guideline Superintendent Shawnterra Moore said is always standard but not documented.

In response to community input, several changes have been made to the MOU, such as:

Trustee John Baker said he also has a significant number of changes he wants to make and continues to support calls for a final vote to be postponed until a full board discussion can take place.

Before the vote was postponed, public speakers claimed the process was hasty and raised concerns that neither agency had provided any material data to aid police on campus. Instead, the meeting pleaded with the panels to reject the MOU and maintain the program’s suspension.

Defending the pace of the district’s work, Moore noted that the board had directed staff to develop the MOU and signaled the urgency to complete it before the new school year. Following instructions from the board, Moore said she would work with Lujan to re-plan the SLO discussion.

“I want to make sure we are following the guideline I’ve been given to make sure we develop a MOU that meets the needs of our students,” said Moore. “I have no doubt we will make it, and we will do it collaboratively and collectively.”
