SAN FRANCISCO — Manny Machado and Gary Sánchez hit three-run homers and the San Diego Padres beat San Francisco 10-0 Thursday to end the Giants’ 10-game winning streak.

“Obviously, the first inning and getting a couple of three-run homers in the first three helped,” Padres manager Bob Melvin said. “Runners in scoring position, a lot of good at-bats today.”

Blake Snell (4-6) won his third straight decision, striking out 11 and allowing three singles in six innings as the Padres avoided getting swept in a four-game series for the first time since 2017. Snell has an 18-inning scoreless streak and has allowed one run over 31 innings in his last five starts.

“I’m just in a zone, competing with every pitch,” Snell said. “When I have four pitches and they’re all working, that’s when I’m at my best.”

Snell, García and Ray Kerr combined to retire San Francisco’s last 13 batters in the Padres’ eighth shutout this season, a game that lasted 2 hours, 19 minutes.

San Francisco batters struck out 14 times in the Giants’ seventh shutout loss.

“Snell was as good as we’ve seen him,” Giants manager Gabe Kapler said.

Ha-Seong Kim added a solo homer for the Padres, who went 5 for 10 with runners in scoring position.

Sánchez stopped an 0-for-22 slump with his three-run homer in the first off Alex Wood (2-2). Sánchez added a pair of singles to finish 3 for 5 and is hitting .214 with seven homers and 18 RBIs in 22 games since joining the Padres.

Machado doubled the lead in the third with his 10th homer.

“After three tough losses, nobody went home too terribly happy last night, so it was good to see an early response,” Melvin said.

Wood allowed six runs, four hits and four walks in 3⅓ innings. The Giants’ winning streak had been their longest since 2004.

Kim homered in the fourth off Jakob Junis. Jake Cronenworth added an RBI single in the fifth, and Nelson Cruz followed with a two-run double.

Juan Soto had his fourth straight multihit game, going 2 for 3 with a walk and two runs.

San Francisco was seeking its first four-game sweep of the Padres since 2006 and its first at home since 1993 at Candlestick Park.

Swap

San Francisco acquired outfielder Dalton Guthrie from Philadelphia for cash.

Trainer’s room

Giants: OF Mike Yastrzemski, who left Wednesday’s game with left hamstring tightness, is expected to return in the next couple of days after an MRI showed minor inflammation. … 1B/OF LaMonte Wade Jr. (right side tightness) remained out of the starting lineup for a third straight game.

Roster move

San Francisco recalled OF Bryce Johnson from Triple-A Sacramento and optioned RHP Sean Hjelle to the Triple-A farm team. Johnson started in center field and went 0 for 3.

Up next

Padres: RHP Joe Musgrove (5-2, 4.22 ERA) seeks to win his fifth decision, starting Friday against visiting San Diego and LHP Patrick Corbin (4-8, 4.89), who has lost his last three starts.

Giants: In a matchup of the top two teams in the NL West, RHP Logan Webb (6-6, 3.11) starts for the Giants and RHP Zach Davies (1-3, 7.11) for Arizona.

SAN FRANCISCO — All it took, apparently, to snap the Giants’ season-long losing streak was to keep going down the list of MLB’s biggest losers.

They lost two of three to the reeling Pittsburgh Pirates. Swept by the woeful Washington Nationals. Couldn’t beat the dreadful Detroit Tigers.

The Giants must have been thrilled to return home to meet the one roster constructed to drive fans away, not win ballgames. Still, it took a heroic effort from Alex Cobb and, at long last, a piece of timely hitting from Mike Yastrzemski to snap their six-game losing streak, squeaking by the MLB-worst A’s, 2-1, on Tuesday in the first game of the Bay Bridge series.

And those Oakland diehards? Not dead yet. Many of the 40,014 fans in attendance broke out in “Sell-the-team!” chants throughout the fifth inning.

But rejoice, for the Giants’ losing streak is.

With two outs in the eighth inning, Yastrzemski did something no Giants hitter had done in nearly week: He delivered a hit with runners in scoring position. After coming up empty in 27 straight at-bats since Wednesday, Yastrzemski ripped a double down the right field line that scored Luis Matos from second and broke a 1-1 tie.

Despite finally getting back in the win column, the Giants can’t be happy about another clunker of an offensive effort, this time against the worst team with the worst pitching staff in the majors. They haven’t scored more than three runs or recorded more than six hits in a game since last Tuesday, the last time they won.

After a self-described “clunker” of a start leading to the second loss of the streak, Cobb pitched like a man determined not to let it happen again. Aided by a lineup that has produced the fewest runs and lowest OPS of any offense in the majors this season, the 35-year-old right-hander breezed through six shutout innings and was in line for the win until was in line for the win until Tyler Rogers coughed up the lead in the eighth. To be fair, he didn’t have much wiggle room to work with.

Cobb struck out seven of the first nine batters he faced and finished with a season-high nine punchouts, five coming on a splitter that was working as well as ever.

For as bad as the A’s hitters have been, their pitchers have been even worse.

Second-year lefty Ken Waldichuk, a product of St. Mary’s College (Moraga), took a 6.75 ERA into Tuesday’s game but faced little resistance from a Giants lineup on fumes. Upon entering in the second inning, Waldichuk retired the first nine hitters he faced and struck out six while allowing only one hit over 4⅔ innings.

Even the Giants’ lone runs were only an effect of the A’s doing.

It took a walk to J.D. Davis to put Matos in scoring position in the eighth.

They loaded the bases with no outs in the fifth inning and managed to score only one — unearned — run.

Wilmer Flores, who drew a walk to lead off the inning, should have been out at third on a poor bunt from Brett Wisely. The ball rolled directly back to the mound, giving Waldichuk a force-play on the lead runner, Flores, at third. Waldichuk’s throw, however, sailed wide, pulling third baseman Jace Peterson off the bag.

Flores scored on a sac fly from Casey Schmitt, which otherwise would have been the third out of the inning.

With an out in the seventh inning and a Pittsburgh Pirates run behind the Cleveland Guardians, Ji-Man Choi watched and wished while he waited on deck behind Carlos Santana.

“I was hoping he would take a walk so I could probably make a difference up there,” Choi said through interpreter Daniel Park. “When the bases are loaded, I can actually concentrate a little more.”

Choi followed up with a line drive to right field for a two-run single that gave the Pirates the lead and later slid across home plate to score after Jared Triolo’s two-run single that provided the perfect cushion worried.

The Pirates ended their offensive ineptness against Cleveland and rebounded from a four-run deficit with a seventh run from five to a 7-5 win Wednesday afternoon before 26,541 at PNC Park.

The Pirates (42-54) ended a five-game losing streak and failed to win both the three-game streak and six-game home streak after losing three straight losses to the San Francisco Giants over the weekend.

“We were struggling,” said Pirates outfielder Bryan Reynolds, “so it was good to get a win and make it such a comeback win.”

The Guardians had outplayed the Pirates 21-1 in the first two games of the series. The Pirates had only 10 runs in the five games since the All-Star break and were unwilling to embark on a six-game trip to play the Los Angeles Angels and the San Diego Padres, and in an ominous one Mood.

“It was a big win,” said Pirates manager Derek Shelton. “I give them credit because we kept grinning. It could have been a (bad) situation. We got a run in the first two games and managed it pretty well. They kept going even though they went under.”

The seventh place served as a rallying point for the pirates.

After Nick Gonzales pulled a one-out walk against Nick Sandlin in the seventh game, the Guardians brought in left-hander Sam Hentges to take on pinch-hitter Endy Rodriguez. The rookie catcher, who was 0 for 7 with six strikeouts in his first two career games, hit a bloop single that landed flat left of center in his first major league hit.

“It shows that they trust me,” said Rodriguez, the Pirates’ 2022 minor league player of the year. “That’s good. If they trust me and I trust myself, we’ll have something good. It’s good for me.”

Connor Joe hit a pinch hit for Jack Suwinski and missed an infield single to stress the bases, setting the stage for a crucial play that marked the turning point.

Reynolds missed a sharp grounder in what was initially thought to be a 6-4-3 double play late in the inning on a tight call at first base. The Pirates challenged the call and it was overturned, allowing Gonzales to score and reduce Cleveland’s lead to 4-3.

“I always run hard across the board,” Reynolds said with a shrug. “Of course I was hoping to be safe. I thought it was me when I hit the sack. Basically it was about people having good bats and passing the baton down the line.”

Carlos Santana pulled a full-count walk to again fill in bases for Choi, who aligned the two-run single to the right and gave the Pirates a 5-4 lead.

The Guardians turned to Enyel De Los Santos, but Henry Davis pulled another full-count walk to cover bases for the third time. Triolo hit a two-run single to the left to score Santana and Choi for a 7-4 lead.

“That’s exactly what we talked about, having this big inning where we can get the win,” Triolo said. “We had guys throughout the lineup who swung good balls and had good bats. That’s what it takes.”

Cleveland got a boost when first baseman Josh Bell shot Ryan Borucki’s 2-1 sweeper for his 11th home run — and second in as many games against his former team — Ryan Borucki 401 feet into left field and the stand shortened to 7:5.

David Bednar threw a clean ninth throw, earning his 18th save.

Rich Hill, the Pirates’ left-hander, was knocked out after the first six batters he faced before David Fry hit a leadoff double from Clemente Wall in the third and then advanced to third base through Myles Straw’s sacrificial bunt. But Hill tricked Cam Gallagher into seeing a full-count curveball for a strikeout and then tricked Steven Kwan into dodging to the left, where Reynolds made a diving catch.

The Guardians took a 1-0 lead in the fourth set when Andres Gimenez landed a perfect squeeze bunt on first baseline and Jose Ramirez scored from third base.

Cleveland added three more runs in the fourth run when Amed Rosario hit a two-run double that popped out of Jack Suwinski’s glove when he crashed into the bullpen fence left of center, and Bell followed up with a single to the right Center to make Rosario score 4-0.

The Pirates responded in the fifth set when Davis hit a leadoff single, advanced to third base with Triolo’s single to the left, and scored when Gonzales smoked a single through the middle. Suwinski doubled to the right to hit Triolo and cut the Guardians’ lead to 4-2.

Triolo extended his hitting streak to 12 games, the longest by a Pirates player this season and the second-longest active streak in baseball. According to Elias Sports Bureau, Triolo is only the third Pirates player since 1900 to have a streak of 12 or more games in his first 17 career games, tied with Jewel Ens (1922) and Woody Jensen (1931).

The Pirates pulled Hill after his 97th pitch led to a two-out double from Straw, and Dauri Moreta got Gallagher eyeing a 95-mph four-seater at the top of the zone for what was called a third shot to prevent a run.

“We’re obviously against the urgency of winning,” Hill said. “In my position as a starter, I have to do better and put us in a better winning position and that’s frustrating. But I take full responsibility for that. I think the comeback effect we’ve had all year is because we made it early. We know we can do it and we’ve proven it.”

The Cardinals got off to their worst start since 1973, losing seven of their last nine games before tonight’s game and trailing the first-seeded Pittsburgh Pirates by 8.5 games. To win an escape day, St. Louis was tasked with beating right-hander Logan Webb, who finished last season with a 2.90 ERA and won 15 games.

Here’s the St. Louis line-up without Willson Contreras.

Lars Nootbaar, CF

Paul Goldschmidt, 1B

Nolan Gorman, DH

Nolan Arenado, 3B

Alec Burleson, RF

Paul DeJong, SS

Tyler O’Neill, LF

Andreas Knizner, C

Tommy Edman, 2B

Miles Mikolas – SP

And for the giants:

LaMonte Wade Jr., L.F

Thairo Estrada, 2B

Joc Pederson, DH

Michael Comfort, RF

Wilmer Flores, 1B

Mike Yastrzemski, CF

Blake Sabol, C

David Villar, 3B

Brandon Crawford, S.S

Logan Webb SP

The Cardinals won a baseball game against the odds Thursday afternoon, led by Miles Mikolas’ best start to the season. The offense was boosted by Alec Burleson’s solo home run in the seventh inning, which came close to splashing into the bay.

The Cardinals hit all six runs starting in the seventh inning. The win improves the Cardinals’ series finals record to 6-2 this season. The Cardinals are 4-14 in games that aren’t the last game of a series.

But about the win…

1st inning

Easy first inning for Webb, who only throws 12 pitches to set up a zero. Strikeouts from Nootbaar and Gorman were pinched by Goldschmidt around a deep flyout to midfield.

Mikolas knocked out Wade to start the ballgame, but Estrada stabbed a one-out single into right field. However, Miles was able to pull Pederson back with a flyout and Conforto with a groundout to get out of the inning.

2nd inning

Arenado led the inning to left field with a line drive single. Burleson followed and ripped a sharp ground ball straight at Flores, which kept Arenado at first base. Flores stepped on the pocket for the first out and then tagged Arenado, who attempted to dunk back into the first for the second out of the inning (once the first out was made, Arenado was no longer forced to go for second, and tried to dive back first for sure). DeJong landed for our number three.

Flores made a full count against Mikolas and eventually pulled a leadoff walk. He was stuck there, however, with strikeouts from Yastrzemski and Sabol, followed by a right flyout from Villar.

3rd inning

After a groundout by Tyler O’Neill, Knizner hit the middle (actually putting him 3-9 in his last 9 at-bats). Edman struck, but Nootbaar achieved an infield single perfectly placed between the postponed Crawford and Estrada. Goldschmidt pulled a two-out walk to load the bases, but Gorman flapped out at the knees after a perfectly placed changeup to kill the Cardinal threat.

Brandon Crawford led at the bottom of the third and hit a flyball towards foul territory on which O’Neill made a fine sliding play for the first out. Wade landed just ahead of DeJong for our number two, but then Mikolas slammed Estrada right in the ribs with a 95-mile fastball. After standing by the coaches for a few minutes, he was finally able to go down first and stayed in the game. Pederson showed up in the infield, Edman made the catch and finished the third inning.

4th inning

A nine-pitch, 1-2-3 inning for Webb in the fourth. Arenado batted on three pitches (his ninth strikeout in his last 19 at bat), Burleson landed right back at Webb, and DeJong landed in second place.

It was also a fast inning for Mikolas, who retired Conforto (groundout), Flores (strikeout) and Yastrzemski (flyout) in 11 places.

5th inning

Leading from fifth, O’Neill put a good swing on a 2-2 shifter and sent it 384 feet into midfield, where Yastrzemski ran it down a foot or two short of the Warnbahn. Knizner ended up in first place and Edman in second place for outs two and three.

Sabol at-batted Mikolas on the second pitch and slammed Edman in flat right field. Villar chased Mikolas’ first pitch and took a knee-high fastball into right field for a base knock. Crawford followed with a base goal in midfield, Villar went from first to third.

While Wade was batting, Crawford stole second base (his third steal of the season) and put two runners in goal position for the Giants left fielder. Wade took a stroll to recharge them – and set up the doubles game if you’re one of those optimistic fans. Estrada swung and hit a dead helicopter about six feet from the plate — trouble is, both Knizner and Mikolas tried without both being on home plate to get the leading runner. Because of this, Knizner grabbed the ball and dove back towards home plate, knocking out a headfirst diving Villar before he could touch the plate.

Estrada made first base in the previous game, so Joc Pederson’s bases were still loaded. He hit a 109-mph line drive right at Burleson in right field for the final of the fifth inning – Mikolas escapes the jam.

6th inning

Nootbaar struck for the second time in the game, Goldschmidt’s 108.8 mph line drive was intercepted on Conforto’s right field wall and Gorman struck for the third time in the game – his first hat-trick of the year!

Conforto led at the end of the sixth, hitting a bouncer right back to Mikolas, who took his time with a flip to make the out for the first time. Flores hit a low ball into midfield which Edman repelled to catch the second out. With two outs, Yastrzemski hit a rocket off right fieldwall for a double, with Burleson’s throw hitting his leg at second base, giving DeJong no opportunity for a tag. Mikolas hit Sabol with a slider to end the inning and set the game’s potential on the first run in the second.

7th inning

After an Arenado groundout, Alec Burleson hammered a high fastball (like very high…no hit high) high and low into the San Francisco sky for his third homer of the year, overcoming the 24-foot wall on right field to take it 1-0 to make the Cardinals in the seventh.

DeJong followed up with a base hit into right field, which put him 7-for-16 since his return to the Cardinals. O’Neill hit essentially the same spot, putting on two for Knizner with an out. The Cardinals catcher hit a deep fly ball into left midfield, with Wade making the catch off the warning lane. Both runners moved up, with DeJong third and O’Neill second.

With two outs, Edman hit a ground ball down the middle. Estrada reached to his right, gloved it and made a two-hop throw to first base, calling Edman out on a bang-bang play. However, the Cardinals initially challenged the call and it was nullified — Edman had an infield hit and the Cardinals had another run on the board that saw DeJong cross the plate.

Gabe Kapler went to the bullpen and brought in former Cardinal John Brebbia against Nootbaar, who flew into midfield for our number three.

Mikolas hit Villar with a big curveball for the first out in the bottom of the seventh, and Oli Marmol went for the bullpen. When the left-hander struck Crawford and Wade, it was time for Genesis Cabrera.

Cabrera defeated Crawford, gave Wade a one-out double, but got Estrada to hit a groundball straight back to him to end the seventh inning.

Mikola’s closing line: 6.1 IP, 4 H, 0 ER, 2 BB, 6 K (95 pitches)
Webb’s last line: 6.2 IP, 7 H, 2 ER, 1 BB, 7 K (102 pitches)

8th inning

Goldschmidt worked a 12-pitch at-bat against Brebbia, including six fouls, but eventually landed. Gorman jumped on a 1-1 slider and put it into right field for a one-out hit, but was cleared on second base when Arenado scored in an easy 4-6-3 double play. However, Crawford’s throw back to first base was high and down the line, allowing Arenado to reach first.

Dylan Carlson, who came on as Burleson’s defensive back-up, hit a ground ball where the third baseman would have been had he not been shadowed to the right. The ball rolled all the way down the third baseline until it was finally picked up by Wade, and the relay didn’t make it home in time to reach Arenado, who scored to make it 3-0. Carlson ended up in second place with a double.

Kapler went into the bullpen again and brought in right-hander Tristan Beck for his third appearance of the season. DeJong greeted him with a bombshell and slammed a hanging breaking ball 369 feet into left field seats for a two-run homer — his second homer in five games since he was recalled. 5-0 Cardinals.

O’Neill pulled a two-out walk, but Knizner was called out on strikes for the number three.

Mitch Haniger pinched for Pederson and hit a 51 mph swinging bunt toward third base that Arenado simply picked up and pocketed for a leadoff single. Cabrera finished out Conforto with a flyout and Flores with a pop out before defeating Yastrzemski with two outs. He knocked out Sabol to strand both runners and send that play to ninth place.

9th inning

A double from Tommy Edman and a single from Nootbaar got Goldschmidt out with runners in the corners and nobody to start the ninth inning. He hit a ground ball to Villar in third, who went for second for the force out, but they initially failed to complete the doubles play. Edman scored to make it 6-0.
