This past offseason, the Toronto Blue Jays were often scrutinized for various plays they actually made or didn't make. One of those moves was the failure to re-sign star third baseman and fan favorite Matt Chapman. When he finally signed a three-year contract worth just $54 million with the San Francisco Giants, the fan base became even angrier because the Jays couldn't match such an offer. Ultimately, Chapman was the best third baseman available in free agency and the perfect example of a player who could provide elite offense and defense at the same time for any team.

But after seeing Chapman's rocky start to his tenure with the Giants so far, it turns out the Jays finally got it right. In 37 games this season, he has posted a paltry .204 batting average along with a .595 OPS, 18 runs scored, 4 home runs, and 14 RBI. Additionally, his 4.6:1 strikeout-to-walk ratio is his best since 2020. So it appears that his offensive regression that we saw with the Jays in 2023 was actually a taste of what was to come for Chapman would come.

To add insult to injury, his Gold Glove-caliber defense this year with the Giants was anything but elite. In fact, he was difficult to watch at times as this type of erratic fielding became more and more the norm for him.

As of Tuesday night, Chapman had already committed 6 errors in just 102 chances, for a fielding percentage of .941, easily making it his worst defensive season of his MLB career.

As much as the Jays have struggled so far in 2024, at least the so-called Chapman replacements on the team have performed solidly for Toronto so far. Overall, the Blue Jays' starting third baseman had a .244 batting average with an OPS of .690, along with 15 runs scored, 3 home runs, 14 RBI, 3 stolen bases and a strikeout-to-walk ratio of 2.5 :1. Defensively, they committed just four errors and had a respectable fielding percentage of .960.

Looking closer at the players, Ernie Clement and Isiah Kiner-Falefa have received the most starts at the hot corner. Statistically, Clement posted a solid .271 average with a .760 OPS with 10 runs scored, two home runs and 6 RBI in 28 games, while Kiner-Falefa also held his own with a .260 average and 9 runs scored one Home run and 10 RBI in 35 games played. When we also factor in Justin Turner, who played a few stints at third and was more or less Chapman's replacement on offense, it's clear to see that the Jays made the right choice. Turner currently leads the team in batting average (.282), on-base percentage (.357), OPS (.821), doubles (8), RBI (16) and is second in hits (31), runs scored (16). ). Home runs (4) and slugging percentage (.472). Without Turner, who knows where the Jays would be right now.

As disappointing as the 2024 season has been for the Jays with all of the recent negative backlash, they can rest assured that they did at least one thing right, and that's not re-signing Chapman to a multi-year deal. It's hard to imagine, but if that were the case, it could have been even worse. Going forward, let's just hope that the Jays can make a few smart moves now and somehow salvage the season before it starts to spiral out of control.

SAN FRANCISCO – City officials in San Francisco are preparing to move forward with sweeping homeless encampments after receiving the latest legal guidance as a years-long battle over the issue plays out in court.

San Francisco officials say the majority of homeless people in encampments who are offered housing routinely turn it down. But now, because of new judicial guidance in an ongoing federal case, these people can't just stay on the streets.

On any given day, residents say Willow Street near Van Ness is lined with trash and tents.

“People who know Willow, it's become really notorious. And for two years it's been really, really bad and it's extremely unsafe,” said Ricky, an area resident who did not want to reveal his last name for privacy reasons. “We see that a lot of electricity is stolen. We see fires. We saw vandalism.”

On Monday evening, a neighbor also filmed a rare drug discovery on the street.

Last month, Mayor London Breed posted a video on X of her visit to Willow Street, showing workers cleaning up. She said the goal is to get people into shelters and off the streets.

For the entire year, an injunction has prevented the city from enforcing certain laws against those who refuse protection on our streets.

The Ninth Circuit provided clarity about who is considered “involuntarily homeless.”

“If city workers offer concrete offers of available housing to homeless individuals and they refuse that offer, then the law can be enforced against them. “They are not allowed to pitch their tent on the street,” said city attorney David Chiu.

Chiu said this development means people should see fewer camps and cleaner streets over time.

However, the lawsuit filed by homeless advocates is still pending, and the ban on clearing encampments until there are more homeless beds than homeless people remains in effect. But the mayor said there is now a path forward to enforce laws against those who are voluntarily homeless.

“I would say it's really good that they sorted that out. Firstly, many of these people need a home. So pushing them and telling them there's a home for them would help a lot,” Ricky said. “But those who don't want to be moved, we believe… a lot of them cause a lot of trouble.”

Since KPIX first reported on Willow Street nearly two years ago, a new encampment has sprung up a block away on Eddy Street on Van Ness Street. Residents say it has only grown.

“The residents – we talked about it. Now there are no more excuses, now at least some of it needs to be cleaned up,” Ricky added.

Chiu said city departments are working on logistics for the upcoming evictions.

Meanwhile, a trial date for the federal case has been set for late next year.

That’s a stinging indictment of Garoppolo.

Vegas inked Jimmy G to a three-year $72.75 million contract this offseason as McDaniels’ hand-picked replacement for Derek Carr. The marriage got off to an ominous start with the QB’s foot injury pausing the introductory press conference as the sides figured out the health-related issues. The deal eventually got sorted out but foreshadowed problems to come.

Garoppolo, who struggled to stay healthy for stints in San Francisco, once again dealt with injury issues, missing two tilts and getting knocked out at halftime of another this season due to a back injury. When he was on the field, it wasn’t pretty. The QB generated just one game of more than 208 yards passing and currently leads the NFL with nine interceptions despite significantly fewer snaps than other starting signal-callers.

Outside the comfort of a Kyle Shanahan offense, Garoppolo struggled to move the ball, airmailed a host of passes, and was easily rattled by pressure. Monday night’s disastrous outing in Detroit, which included missing badly deep to Davante Adams multiple times, appeared to be the straw that broke the camel’s back. 

Benching Garoppolo is the short-term move. The question for the new GM this offseason will be whether the club swallows the dead money on the QB’s contract and completely moves on.

In the meantime, O’Connell will start his second game of his career on Sunday against the Giants in Vegas.

Can the 49ers get a win into the bye?

The atrociousness that was the Minnesota Vikings is now in the rearview mirror. The San Francisco 49ers are back to take on the Cincinnati Bengals, the team they won their first Super Bowl against in 1981. This will be another litmus test for the defense that was unable to much of anything against Vikings quarterback Kirk Cousins. A full rundown of the positions can be found by Ryan Bainbridge. This will be an afternoon game. Jim Nantz will be providing play-by-play and Tony Romo will be providing color.

The 49ers have been stumbling into a couple of losses in games many felt they should have won. Some questions have been placed towards both second year quarterback Brock Purdy and the defense led by Steve Wilks.

Purdy hasn’t played a good full four quarters of football in each of his two losses but managed to put the team in winning position in one of the aforementioned losses and played while concussed in the other (which explains two picks). The concussion leads to the third serious injury Purdy has suffered in what can be considered a full NFL season at this point. While he has managed to play through two of those injuries, durability—while not a question— is definitely something to keep an eye on.

Meanwhile the 49ers defense, led by Steve Wilks began the season with a weekly bonehead play or two per game that led to an opponent touchdown. That only grew worse and the small drippy leaks in the plumbing festered to pipes exploding as his defense couldn’t close out a game in Cleveland (though still managed several stops and can’t be blamed for the loss entirely). Wilks and the defense need to figure out the issues, and fast. Not calling cover 0 with 16 seconds left in the first half would be a good start. The 49ers will be getting their bye week after this game so a win could definitely send them in a positive direction as they get healthy.

The Cincinnati Bengals started almost the opposite of the 49ers. They dropped their first two games to the Cleveland Browns and Baltimore Ravens, respectively then won their next three out of four games. All three of those wins came against the NFC West (one of which against the Seattle Seahawks…thanks Cincy!).

The Bengals offense started out quite slow but once they met Arizona, Burrow went a game throwing for over 300 yards (first time this season) and wide receiver Ja’Marr Chase broke the Bengals record for single-game receptions. While there is no panic button involved with the Bengals yet, the urgency factor is high.

The San Francisco 49ers will not be with wide receiver Deebo Samuel who is still nursing a shoulder fracture. He may return after the 49ers bye which comes concluding the Bengals game. Offensive Tackle Trent Williams has been listed as questionable and as of this writing looks to be a game-time decision. Quarterback Brock Purdy, who has been in the concussion protocol, has been cleared to play as of Saturday.

The Bengals running back depth will be tested. Chase Brown went on IR Saturday which means Joe Mixon may get some extended work Sunday with Trayveon Williams getting a bit more of a workload. Tackle Orlando Brown Jr. was listed as questionable through the week, but should play.

“San Francisco’s downtown has lost roughly 150,000 daily workers since the pandemic,” reports the San Francisco Chronicle.

But on the bright side, “Some of San Francisco’s empty office buildings are one step closer to being converted into residential units,” reports SFGate:

The owners of eight San Francisco office buildings responded to a request from the city for landlords interested in converting their properties into condos or apartments, the San Francisco Chronicle reported… The properties would yield about 1,100 units if they were to all be converted, according to the Chronicle. All of the buildings are located in neighborhoods downtown, including the Civic Center area and the Financial District…

Converting offices to housing is a notably difficult process, especially in San Francisco, where the city’s tedious permitting and approvals process has deterred many landlords from pursuing the process entirely. However, that could soon change: The request for interest put forth by the city was part of an initiative intended to jump-start office-to-housing conversions that was announced in June. In March, Mayor London Breed and the Board of Supervisors introduced legislation that would facilitate these conversions by exempting certain downtown buildings from housing requirements that are more difficult to apply to former offices, like rear yard space and a variety of unit types.
Or, as the Chronicle puts it, “The much-discussed push to revive downtown San Francisco by converting empty office buildings to housing is starting to gather real-world momentum, with property owners looking to take advantage of a political climate in which the mayor and Board of Supervisors are desperate to activate the city’s struggling central neighborhoods.”

While converting eight commercial buildings totaling less than 1 million square feet would not put much of a dent in the historic 33.9% office vacancy — more than 30 million square feet of space — the interest is indicative that an increasing number of landlords are accepting the reality that the pandemic and remote work has rendered some buildings obsolete. “We were pleased with the responses — it was more than we had expected, and there was a good variety of buildings,” said Anne Taupier, director of development for the city’s Office of Economic and Workforce Development. “We think there is a chance to see some game-changing activation….”

Taupier said that all of the property owners said that recent legislation streamlining and lowering affordable housing requirements would be key to making conversions possible. Most of them would be candidates for Mills Act tax credits, which allow cities to reduce taxes for 10 years or more to owners of historic properties.
One of the biggest applications came from Mark Shkolnikov’s Group I. “The support from the city has just been remarkable,” Shkolnikov said. “They have been frequently checking in to see what they can do to help move this along.

SANTA CLARA, Calif. (AP) — Colton McKivitz spent his first three seasons in the NFL bouncing back and forth between the practice squad and active roster for the San Francisco 49ers with limited opportunity to play.

Now McKivitz heads into Year 4 with a big role on one of the Super Bowl favorites as the starting right tackle, a big change for a player who had been fighting just to stay in the league.

“I could not be standing here,” McKivitz said Tuesday. “That’s just part of it. It’s taught me a lot about being a pro and learning from some of the vets. Just getting advice from some of those guys and teaching me the ways to be prepared for when I get my chance. Now’s the time. I’m taking full advantage of what they taught me.”

McKivitz joined the Niners as a fifth-round draft pick out of West Virginia in 2020 and started three games as a rookie. But he failed to make the team coming out of camp the following year, being relegated to the practice squad, where he spent most of that season before being named an emergency starter in a Week 18 game San Francisco needed to win to clinch a spot in the playoffs.

McKivitz spent most of last season as a backup again, with just one start before signing a two-year, $4.6 million contract in March that gave him some stability.

That was only fortified when San Francisco went through the offseason without drafting or signing a potential starter at the spot, showing belief that McKivitz could replace Mike McGlinchey.

“I’ve sweated a few drafts,” he said. “For them not to take anyone and to put that full confidence me as a starter is huge. The pressure’s not off because you’re now the starter. But it just gives that ability to work on the little things and not have that kind of little voice in the back that you may not be here tomorrow. But at the same time, you may lose your job. It builds confidence that the front office and those guys have confidence in me to be the starter. It’s my job not to lose it.”

McKivitz said getting cut before his second season was a bit of a shock but he responded well by working harder and leaning on veterans like All-Pro left Trent Williams to improve as a player.

“That was a wake-up,” offensive line coach Chris Foerster said. “If you talk to him about it, that would probably be his wake-up call in the NFL. Nobody claimed him and we brought him back on our practice squad. That was one of those things where he kind of thought: ‘Well, I was drafted. I’m going to be here. I’m going to get my opportunities.’ You come to realize that nothing’s guaranteed and so we brought him back in a practice squad role and he was a different guy from that moment on.”

This is the second straight season that the Niners have entrusted a starting spot on the offensive line to a relatively untested player.

Last year, the three interior starters came into the season with three career starts, with rookie Spencer Burford playing right guard, second-year player Aaron Banks stepping in at left guard and Jake Brendel getting the nod at center after starting only three games his first six seasons.

SAN FRANCISCO — The San Francisco Giants’ offense appeared to wake up Wednesday, and the club should have been well-rested Friday after a long-awaited day off.

They must have hit the snooze button.

Rookie shortstop Marco Luciano recorded his first hit and scored his first run of his career, and Joc Pederson smashed a late solo shot, but the Giants didn’t manage much else Friday night to back up a bounce-back start from Logan Webb in a 3-2 loss to the Boston Red Sox, who ran their winning streak to five games.

Pederson’s home run in the eighth, his 11th of the season, should have tied the score at 2. But the Red Sox widened their lead to 3-1 in the top half of the inning, after manager Gabe Kapler pulled an ultraefficient Webb with one out in the eighth, and Taylor Rogers surrendered an RBI single to the next batter.

Rebounding from the worst start of his career, Webb mostly silenced a lineup that has been the hottest in the majors since the end of June. He was shown shaking his head on the bench after the run scored, more likely lamenting the base runner he left for Rogers than Kapler’s decision to pull him.

Webb didn’t run a three-ball count until the fifth inning and was at only 88 pitches when Kapler came to get him, with Boston’s lineup turning over for a fourth time and a runner at second after a leadoff single and a sacrifice bunt. Pinch-hitter Rob Refsnyder lined the first pitch from Rogers into left-field, driving home Connor Wong for what proved to be a crucial insurance run.

Limiting a dangerous Boston lineup to three runs on six hits, Webb lowered his ERA to 3.49, including a 2.20 mark in 10 starts at Oracle Park. He struck out four and walked none. It should have been enough to earn the win, but the Giants’ lineup returned to its slumber against Red Sox starter Kutter Crawford.

The Giants managed just one other hit off Crawford besides Luciano’s and the RBI single from Michael Conforto that drove him in. Looking to extend their sixth-inning rally after Crawford was lifted for left-handed reliever Brennan Bernardino, Kapler called on Austin Slater to pinch-hit, and he struck out.

In his second major-league game, Luciano recorded his first career hit with a line drive that glanced off the glove of third baseman Rafael Devers to lead off the sixth. The ball left his bat at 107.1 mph. He took second on a wild pitch, putting him in position to score on a single from Conforto.

The Giants were primed to strike again in the seventh, with leadoff singles from J.D. Davis and Patrick Bailey. But, with the help of a sensational diving stop and flip from second baseman Justin Turner, they came up empty. Turner’s diving stop robbed Blake Sabol of an RBI single, and Luciano was called out on strikes to end the inning, stranding Davis at third as the would-be tying run.

The Red Sox, who improved to an MLB-best 16-5 since June 30, possess six of the top nine batters in the AL in that time span. Consider them the polar opposites of the Giants’ ice-cold group, which has produced three or fewer runs in eight of their past nine games and is batting .204 this month (Boston: .299).

Triston Casas accounted for Boston’s first two runs off Webb with two of their six hits, including his MLB-leading seventh home run since the All-Star break.

Casas traded places with Adam Duvall in the second inning with back-to-back ground rule doubles that put Boston up 1-0. Duvall’s was a line drive down the third-base line that just evaded the glove of Davis but eventually found the one of the ball guy, automatically awarding Duvall second.

Manager Alex Cora and a Red Sox trainer came out of the dugout to check on Casas in the fifth after he fouled a two-strike changeup off his shin and fell to the ground. It didn’t take long for Casas to prove he was all right, unloading on Webb’s next pitch for a 435-foot home run that landed halfway up the left-field bleachers.
