Posted to Reddit, the video attracted many commenters who questioned the reason for the plane being at a standstill.

‘It’s parallax, which is the observed displacement of an object caused by the change of the observer’s point of view. We see it all the time,’ said one commenter. 

A pilot told Daily Mirror the stunt is an optical illusion – that involves two planes landing at the same time and the smaller one moving slower.

‘San Francisco has a procedure when the weather is adequate and both aircraft [sic] can see each other, they can land with less separation laterally than you’d normally need,’ the pilot told the outlet following a similar incident. 

‘The aircraft is much lighter than the one where the passenger is filming, so it will be flying much slower – and there could be a strong headwind which means less movement over the ground too.’

Commenters thought otherwise about why the aircraft was hanging in mid-air. 

‘No no glitch in the Matrix is the more rational explanation,’ a Reddit user commented. 

‘No, I thinks [sic] it’s stopped in time guys, anyone see if it’s still stuck there,’ said another. 

Locals to the area said that they have witnessed this spectacle time and time again. 

‘As someone who lives it this area and drives on that bridge all the time, I’m sure hundreds or thousands of people on it would have stopped and recorded the plane just floating above them in mid air,’ said a commenter. 

‘I live rite [sic] by a airport, they come in all the time going super slow like that. It looks impossible but it’s not,’ said another.

‘This will allow staggered arrivals on parallel runways during poor weather conditions, further improving on-time performance at SFO. Arriving aircraft are separated by 1.5 nautical miles,’ SFO said on their website. 

Visual flight rules are a set of guidelines that pilots follow in an aircraft, under clear weather conditions.

‘VFR flight is based on the principle of ‘see and avoid.’ The presumption made in establishing the basic VFR weather minimums is that aircraft flying at lower altitudes and/or in airspace with radar approach control and/or an operating control tower will be moving more slowly, or that they will be under positive control,’ said The Federal Aviation Administration.

When this happens, aircrafts do not need as much flight visibility or distance from clouds in order to avoid other air traffic. 

A similar incident occurred in August as a passenger in another plane posted a video to Reddit of a United Airlines aircraft hovering just above land. 

The passenger captioned the video: ‘Landing at SFO. What is happening here?’ They ended the caption with an alien emoji and a question mark.

The wing of the moving plane reveals a plane not too far away, completely still and hovering in the air with its wheels out.

‘UFO at SFO,’ said one commenter. 

‘It’s a glitch in the matrix,’ said another.

Some commenters appeared to know exactly what was happening to the plane and went on to explain it. 

‘It is an optical illusions [sic] caused by a shifting perceptual frame where one plane is moving at a moderate rate of speed, while simultaneously, the other plane is floating perfectly still in one spot in the air,’ said another. 

Another said: ‘Tell me you have never had a duel [sic] landing at SFO before posting it on social media. They are famous for it [un]like any other airport in the country.’

Other US airports that have the appropriate facilities to conduct simultaneous take-offs and landings include Newark Liberty International Airport and Kansas City International Airport. 

At Newark Airport United Airlines maintains their own operational hub to do so.

According to Simple Flying: ‘In fact, 23 different US airports can accommodate three aircraft approaching three runways simultaneously, some of which are rather small.’ 

In a similar incident, a passenger recorded from the inside of his plane window as the wing of the moving plane reveals a plane not too far away, completely still and hovering in the air with its wheels out A similar video posted to Reddit in August also caused a lot of speculation on why exactly the plane was hovering so low and close to land. Other airports can accommodate more than three aircraft taking off at once, like Denver International Airport and Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport. 

‘Chicago-O’Hare International Airport (ORD) can even hypothetically permit six aircraft to land simultaneously, which would truly be a sight to behold,’ said Simple Flying. 

Though this moment is rare, it is a beautiful phenomenon to witness from another aircraft. 

It is unclear exactly where the floating plane was coming from or if there were passengers onboard.

Among the countless changes that swept across the US during the pandemic were increased migration out of many big population centers – including the Bay Area – and a record surge in home prices nationwide.

But how do home price increases in migration magnets compare to the large metropolitan areas that are losing residents, like the Bay Area? Are more affordable areas becoming less so, as new buyers rush into the housing market? Are home-price increases more tempered in areas seeing lots of departures?

An analysis of data from the 25 largest US metro areas collected by real estate listings website Redfin shows that these trends are often true, including in the Bay Area.

However, some areas have proved to be surprising exceptions – among them Sacramento, a popular destination for Bay Area residents whose housing market, red-hot early in the pandemic, has recently cooled significantly.

Using data from Redfin, we calculated new residents per 10,000 people in the 25 largest US metro areas based on data from April 2022, and the average percent increase in median home sale prices from April 2021 to April 2022. Using its search data, Redfin calculates Estimated migration numbers based on US Census data.

As defined by Redfin, the Bay Area is part of a US Census statistical area that combines the metro areas of San Francisco and San Jose, and encompasses the nine Bay Area counties plus five more: Merced, San Benito, San Joaquin, Santa Cruz and Stanislaus. Of the 25 markets examined, the San Francisco-San Jose metro area showed the highest residents per 10,000 looking to leave the area in the past year, at -33.3. During that time, home sale prices in the area increased year-over-year by 12.6%.

Those trends could be due to a number of factors, said Redfin deputy chief economist Taylor Marr. Decreases in population are a relatively recent phenomenon in the Bay Area, he said. More people were moving to the Bay Area than leaving in 2014, but the tide began to change in 2015, with immigration rates declining and then dropping “dramatically” in subsequent years.

California lost more than 117,000 residents in 2021, with several Bay Area counties including San Francisco driving the increase, each losing nearly 1% of their population. Still, last year’s statewide population decline was lower than the 2020 estimate of 182,083.

Meanwhile, home buying surged in the region during the pandemic as many people sought out more space and could work remotely. That demand, combined with low inventory, has continued to push home prices higher in the Bay Area, despite the outward migration trend.

Demand for homes in the region was strong earlier this year, Marr said, propelled by the “booming stock market” and low interest rates. He also noted that while overall population may have declined, the number of households within the Bay Area grew, with more people moving out of their parents’ homes or roommate situations, getting married and starting families.

But with interest rates rising, price growth likely won’t last for long, Marr said.

“Interest rates now rose at their fastest pace in history and are above 5%,” he said – likely causing home buyers to rethink how much they can afford. “I expect price growth to slow down and maybe turn negative in some areas,” he said.

While that pattern will likely be seen across the US, Marr said, coastal metro areas are usually more sensitive to financial market conditions, and therefore might see a bigger impact.

Sacramento had the highest incoming migration rate among the 25 major metros examined by Redfin, at 24.5 new people per 10,000 residents, but a relatively modest home sale price increase of 12.3% year-over-year. The metro area attracted many Bay Area residents earlier in the pandemic, as offices went remote and people sought out more space.

Marr said a “dramatic” 30% rise in home price growth in spring 2021 was followed by a “really big slowdown” more recently. While he said he couldn’t pinpoint the reasons, he suspected that during that period, many Bay Area residents left for a wider range of places out of state, not just Sacramento and the Central Valley.

Greater supply might also be keeping Sacramento’s home-price growth lower, he added. According to the April 2022 report from the Sacramento Association of Realtors, inventory increased 33% from April of last year, with 1,342 active listings as of April 2022.

In contrast with Sacramento, some areas with high home price increases are seeing more and more people leaving. Seattle is the prime example, with the second largest outflow migration of -28.9 per 10,000 and a home price increase of 18.2%.

Many buyers have simply been priced out of the market, Marr said.

“Our data shows Seattle was still attracting more people moving there a year ago,” he said. “Now more people are leaving Seattle. It used to be booming and the fastest growing region, and quickly turned as prices grew so rapidly.”

Salt Lake City is following a similar pattern, he said. In the last quarter of 2020, a “boom of people moved there” and the inflow remained positive in 2021 until the first quarter of this year.

“I think it’s fascinating that declining migration is indicative of a region that just got too hot,” he said, noting that many locals could no longer afford the higher home prices, and are looking to secondary markets.

The major US metro areas with the highest inward migration and home price increases year-over-year include Phoenix, Orlando and Dallas.

Marr said people leaving the Bay Area had a “big impact” on places including Phoenix, some Texas cities, Seattle, Denver and Salt Lake City. He said those buyers brought with them deep pockets, whether they sold their Bay Area homes and had a lot of cash on hand, or had high salaries and the ability to work remotely.

“On average the budget of out-of-town buyers is significantly higher,” he said, and the amount of wealth flowing into those markets has pushed up home price inflation.

On the East Coast, Marr said the pattern is slightly different. While many New Yorkers moved to Atlanta and Florida metros, there were also a lot more second home buyers purchasing properties in Florida and the Gulf Coast, he said.

It’s time to pull out the wool mittens and hat. Chilly temperatures are expected to grip the San Francisco Bay Area over the next several nights and mornings, through Sunday morning. Some inland valleys could see the mercury dipping into the bone-chilling 20s, while San Francisco is forecast to drop to 40 on Friday and Saturday mornings.

“Frost and freezing temperatures possible for inland valleys and cold sheltered spots,” the National Weather Service warned. “These temperatures will impact those without adequate heating, and may damage or kill sensitive vegetation.”

The weather service forecast lows near 40 along the bay and coast, mid- to upper 30s for coastal valleys, and upper 20s to lower 30s for inland valleys.

“It’s going to be a good cold snap for a few days, especially in regards to the lows,” said Sean Miller, a forecaster with the weather service. “Saturday morning is expected to be the coldest morning during this event. We should be warming up after Sunday morning.”

Forecast lows around the Bay Area:

-San Francisco: near 40;
-San Jose/South Bay: mid- to upper 30s;
-East Bay: lower to mid-30s;
-North Bay valleys: upper 20s to lower 30s;
-Monterey Bay: mid- to upper 30s to about 40;
-Eastern Monterey and San Benito counties: mid-20s to low 30s.

Afternoon highs will be in the mid-40s to mid-50s through the weekend.

Conditions will be dry through the weekend, with rain returning next week, possibly as early as Monday.

“We expect rain early next week within the Monday to Wednesday timeframe,” said Miller. “We’re still a few days out, so things could change with that. In general, it looks like it could be a good rainmaker. We’ve gotten into an active pattern here and it looks like we’re going to continue with that into the near future.”

The National Weather Service shared a satellite loop Tuesday afternoon showing thunderstorms 200 miles offshore from the San Francisco Bay Area.

Storm activity is pushing north and is not expected to affect the region on Tuesday, the weather service said, but there is little risk of thunderstorms in the Bay Area on Thursday.

“It’s part of the same large-scale moisture system that comes in from the south and is directed north because of that high pressure system parked in Nevada-Utah,” said Jeff Lorber, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service’s Bay Area office. “There’s also a small trough off the coast of Northern California. That moisture is channeled south-north between these two systems.”

The highest likelihood of storm activity in the Bay Area on Thursday is in the far North Bay in Napa and Sonoma counties.

Lorber said the odds were 15 to 20% on Tuesday night.

Any lightning that strikes is likely to be dry and rain that falls could evaporate before it hits the ground.

Although the likelihood of a lightning strike is small, the risk is high as a strike could spark wildfire. California has experienced two consecutive dry winters and the vegetation is parched and flammable.

The high pressure that has driven temperatures up in the last few days will cause another hot day on Wednesday, the weather service said. Temperatures on the coast will be in the 60s and 70s, while the higher inland temperatures will rise to 105 in the 90s.

Temperatures are expected to drop on Thursday when the ocean layer returns and the upper level moisture reaches the region.

“The next time we’ll know, will there be a next time? San Francisco? Maybe not, but if we go to another big city we’ll be more careful, ”said visitor Stephanie Perret.

It’s a well-known story … earlier this month Patrick Goddard’s car was broken into at the same location and when he called the police he witnessed another break-in half a block away.

“It was incredibly shocking and bold and we were exactly what was going on?” said visitor Patrick Goddard.

What is going on is that the auto-break-in epidemic in San Francisco is worsening.

Car break-ins rose 42% across the city from April to May, and in the central police district, which includes Fisherman’s Wharf and Pier 39, vehicle break-ins increased 94% from April to May.

“It is difficult to have an officer on every corner, but we know where these events traditionally take place, but we have not been able to sustain the effort that is required to make a dent over time,” said SF Police Chief Bill Scott.

San Francisco Police Chief Bill Scott says vehicle break-ins decreased from 2018 to 2020 but were unsustainable due to staff shortages, which he hopes the budget proposed by mayors will help.

In the meantime, he says they do what they can.

“We put together special details that move people from one district to the next, our tactical unit was used to complement the operation, sending a lot more people on patrol.

The police advise residents and tourists not to leave anything visible in their car.

As a result of the break-in spurt, glass repair companies are experiencing a big boost in business.

“Every morning there are broken glass outside. It’s just cool now, ”said mechanic Kevin Abuyaghi.

Mechanics say it can cost anywhere from $ 500 to $ 800 to repair, and the process isn’t easy.

Gray whales have begun their winter migration along the California coast and offer Bay Area residents numerous opportunities to observe the majestic marine mammals for the next several months.

There’s just one catch: perhaps the best onshore location to see the migrating whales is closed for construction.

The historic lighthouse and observation deck at the westernmost tip of Point Reyes National Seashore – known among whale enthusiasts and amateurs as the best vantage point for spotting whales rounding the Bay Area waters – are banned because Sir Francis Drake Boulevard is one Major is going through overhaul.

Despite the closure, there are plenty of other places to spot the whales on their southern streak from the arctic waters of Alaska to the shallow lagoons of Baja California, said Carlo Arreglo, a park ranger at Point Reyes.

“This is the time of year to see these charismatic superstar mammals,” he said.

From Bodega Head to Muir Beach Overlook and Point Bonita in the Marin Headlands, the north coast offers numerous elevated vantage points. Within the city limits, Fort Funston and the Lands End Lookout have good ocean views to spot spouts.

To the south, the parking lots on either side of the Devil’s Slide Trail provide accessible whale watching. The beaches at Point Reyes have less visibility, but visitors can peek at some spills – and see giant elephant seals in their winter mating season.

Hundreds of gray whales pass through the Bay Area every day at the height of the south migration in January. Pregnant whales, due to give birth in the warm waters of the Baja, are the first to migrate, followed by thousands more in pods of two to five individuals. In spring, the whales begin their journey back to Alaska with their newborn calves.

Elevated lookouts offer the best chance of spotting whales in the water. Bodega Head and Point Reyes are good bets as the whales use the protruding geography to navigate the coast, but the whales are visible from other coastal areas as well.

First, said Arreglo, scan the ocean for clouds of steam – these are the whales that exhale when they emerge for breath. The blowhole is the first part of the body to rise out of the water, followed by the back and tail as the whale dives beneath the surface in one graceful motion.

“Bring binoculars, it’ll help,” said Bill Keener, a whale researcher at the Marine Mammal Center in Sausalito.

While whale runs can be spotted at any time of the day, Keener prefers to set off in the morning hours when the sun is angled off the water. Direct sunlight can make the whales difficult to spot.

The fact that gray whales can still be seen on the California coast – let alone in their thousands – is a small miracle, according to experts. The 40-ton marine mammals were near endangered by the 1930s, but their numbers began to recover with the decline in commercial whaling. Gray whales are now protected by international protection measures.

“California is one of the few places in the world where you can see multiple species of whales,” said Keener. “It’s an amazing wildlife opportunity right off our coast.”

Some local families have turned to whale watching, said Nancy Black, a marine biologist who runs the Monterey Bay Whale Watch. The company has done tours at half capacity, wiped surfaces, and practiced social distancing.

“It’s great – people usually get bored at home,” said Black.

Black noted that whale migration began a few weeks later that year, a trend she believes was due to climate change. Scientists studying gray whales say the warming of the arctic waters could change the whales’ feeding and migration habits. Climate change has also been cited as a possible culprit for the mass extinction, which resulted in an unusually high number of whale victims last year when more than a dozen carcasses washed up on the shores of the Bay Area.

Changed marine ecosystems worry Keener and his colleagues at the Marine Mammal Center. The harmful algae that thrive in warmer waters could pose problems for all marine life, he said, not just gray whales. Therefore, he feels compelled to raise awareness about the whales in order to protect them from future damage.

“These are some of the largest animals that have ever lived on the planet,” he said. “They live a different life than land mammals. They give birth underwater. They have big brains. They have these amazing migrations, ”said Keener.

Arreglo is also impressed by the mysterious mammals that live mostly invisible under the sea surface and pass giants that endure even though humans have hunted them almost to extinction.

“These massive creatures have a sense of mystery,” he said. “There is something to be said to have a secret in our life.”
