Two planes were forced to abort landings at San Francisco International Airpot last week after pilots spotted a Southwest Airlines jet taxiing across runways they had been cleared to land on.

The Federal Aviation Administration says that the Southwest plane cleared the runways while the other planes passed overhead and that a decision to abort the landings was “precautionary.”

An air traffic controller at the airport told the Southwest pilots they should not have been on the runways during the 19 May incident, according to The Associated Press.

Officials say that an inbound United Airlines plane was as low as a few hundred feet over San Francisco Bay before its pilots saw the Southwest jet on the same runway.

A short time later, pilots of an inbound Alaska Airlines plane saw the same Southwest jet crossing a second, parallel runway, and the pilots aborted their landing as well.

Both planes circled and landed safely at the waterfront airport, which is the second busiest in California after LAX in Los Angeles.

An air traffic controller told the crew of the Southwest jet, “You shouldn’t be on the runway,” according to a recording of the incident on LiveATC.com.

And when one of the pilots tried to explain why they were there, the controller quickly cut them off, saying, “I don’t need an argument.”

“The FAA looked into the events and determined the appropriate steps were taken to ensure safe operations,” the agency said in a statement.

The National Transportation Safety Board said it has not opened an investigation into the incident.

The FAA says that there has not been a fatal crash involving a US airline since 2009.

The second storm system, arriving in the Chicago area late Friday through Saturday in colder conditions, has the potential to produce wet snow for parts of the area with some accumulation possible

The “Bomb Cyclone” continues to chop down trees, cut power and bring torrential rain to California. It continues to open, but you can still see the well-defined counterclockwise vortex south of San Francisco.

STRONG AND HEAVY THUNDERSTORMS CONCENTRATE IN BACKCITY AREAS AND OVER THE SOUTHERN PLATES

Heavy prospects Thursday through Thursday night

THREAT OF HEAVY, POTENTIALLY DEPLOYING RAINS IN AREAS SOUTH OF CHICAGO

Excessive rain forecast for Thursday and Thursday night. Plus, Friday and Friday night excessive precipitation prospects

QUANTITATIVE RAINFALL FORECAST THROUGH MONDAY, MARCH 27

A total of 1-1.5 inches of precipitation is expected in the Chicago area over the next 5 days, but areas in the US state could experience a total of 4-5 inches of precipitation, increasing the likelihood of flooding

COLDER THAN NORMAL PATTERN THAT LOCKS UP IN THE 50’S AFTER 3 CONSECUTIVE DAYS

High temperatures

How much below normal?

European Model 2M Temperature Anomaly – 2M temperature is 2M above ground

After Thursday’s showers, mostly early in the day, the next weather system comes late Friday through Saturday bringing cool rain – then possibly some wet snow, particularly in areas north and northwest of Chicago

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. (KABC) — As Southwest Airlines continues to sort out stranded passengers and unclaimed baggage, a reporter in San Francisco said her child’s car seat ended up at a stranger’s home.

Megan Cassidy, a reporter at the SF Chronicle, tweeted Tuesday night telling Southwest, “Please tell me you’re guarding the stranded luggage. Because I’m tracking my kid’s car seat and today it moved from the STL airport to a random house in Riverview Gardens.”

A representative with Southwest Airlines responded to Cassidy with a tweet shortly after, telling the mother, “Hi, Megan. We have delayed luggage sectioned off, and we require the baggage tag in order to release any items. Please DM us so we can discuss this situation further.”

According to a tweet posted by Cassidy, she is tracking her luggage using AirTag, a tracking device developed by Apple.

Cassidy is among thousands of Southwest travelers whose luggage remains unclaimed.

At Hollywood Burbank Airport on Wednesday, a pile of unclaimed luggage sat outside baggage claim carousels and in a change from regular operations, Southwest staff individually called out names and personally handed each passenger their luggage.

“Everybody has just been talking about how crazy this entire thing was,” said traveler Sydnee Roddy. I definitely got like the better end of it because I was visiting my family, but there are people in the airport talking about they were on their last day of medication, and how, like, they were splitting their family up and I felt really bad about the whole thing.”

Southwest CEO Bob Jordan issues video apology

Jordan apologized to passengers and employees in the video released on Tuesday evening.

“We’re doing everything we can to return to a normal operation, and please also hear that I am truly sorry,” Jordan said.

He said with large numbers of airplanes and flight crews “out of position” in dozens of cities, the airline decided to “significantly reduce our flying to catch up.”

While Jordan acknowledged problems with the company response, the statement suggested that he did not foresee massive changes to Southwest’s operating plans in response to the mass cancellations.

“The tools we use to recover from disruption serve us well 99% of the time, but clearly we need to double-down on our already-existing plans to upgrade systems for these extreme circumstances so that we never again face what’s happening right now, said Jordan.

Meanwhile, US Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg has taken the airline to task. He’s pulling no punches, referring to the situation as a complete “meltdown” of the system.

An official for the union representing Southwest pilots said they expect to have their flight schedules almost back to normal by the end of the work week.

But it’s not just Southwest dealing with issues.

On Wednesday, Eyewitness News found stranded passengers at John Wayne Airport flying Frontier and Spirit Airlines.

However, at 4 pm Wednesday, FlightAware reported more than three quarters of those with canceled flights at John Wayne Airport were flying Southwest Airlines.

The airline accounted for more than half of the 4,600 flight cancellations nationwide. The second highest was China Eastern, making up 13% of cancellations in the US

So what should customers do who are stranded?

“First things first, travelers who are still stuck waiting on Southwest and need to get somewhere should try to book a flight with another airline as soon as possible … right now, really,” said Kyle Potter, executive editor at the travel advice website Thrifty Traveler, in an email to CNN Travel on Tuesday.

“Every airline in the country is jam-packed right now, so your odds of even finding a seat — let alone at an even halfway decent price — get smaller by the hour,” Potter said.

Phil Dengler, co-founder of travel advice site The Vacationer, said stranded Southwest passengers should get their heads out of the clouds.

“I recommend searching for alternative forms of transportation. While Southwest may get its act together over the next few days, I would not take the risk,” Dengler said. “It is legally required to provide you with a full cash refund if your flight was canceled, so it is in your best interest to have a solid backup plan.”

He also suggested looking for cheap car rentals from services such as AutoSlash.

“I also recommend checking Amtrak to see if any available trains are going to your destination,” he said.

He said if renting a car or taking a train are not options, you should use Google Flights to search for cheap flights from other airlines.

And “if all else fails, Southwest will eventually get you to your destination, but it may not be until the weekend or early next week. Travelers in the thick of this should be sure to save all their receipts,” Potter said.

Southwest itself has urged the same thing on receipts.

“If you’ve already left, take care of yourself, do what you need to do for your family, keep your receipts,” Southwest spokesperson Jay McVay said in a news conference earlier this week. “We will make sure they are taken care of, that is not a question.”

If you’ve been left in the lurch and your efforts to reach a customer service agent are going nowhere, the founder of Scott’s Cheap Flights suggests trying an international number.

“The main hotline for US airlines will be clogged with other passengers getting rebooked. To get through to an agent quickly, call any one of the airline’s dozens of international offices,” Scott Keyes said.

CNN contributed to this report.

The mountains of La Plata and San Juan are bare on the southern slopes on Saturday, but Monday through Wednesday the mountains should be covered in snow as a weather system moves through the area. (Jerry McBride / Durango Herald)

A large amount of moisture from the Pacific Ocean, known as the “atmospheric river,” flows into southwest Colorado.

“Basically, it’s this heavy cloud of moisture that comes in from the Pacific,” said Erin Walter, a meteorologist for the National Weather Service in Grand Junction. “It’s like this continuous stream, almost like a jet, but in the form of moisture.”

Over the weekend, the atmospheric river dumped over 5 inches of rain in the San Francisco area, Walter said.

Most of the moisture from the storm system in California is drained over the Sierra Nevada and Great Basin, with southwest Colorado receiving the last bit of rainfall on Tuesday.

“We’re not going to see snowflakes like we did in the Sierra Nevada, but we’re going to see some precipitation,” said Walter.

Southwest Colorado has warm conditions that will be a big factor in how much rainfall the area falls, Walter said.

“We see higher amounts of snow on Tuesday morning, and then, when the system goes through, a little colder air will come in behind it,” said Walter.

A cloud of moisture known as the atmospheric river is moving across the states and will bring rain to southwest Colorado on Tuesday. (Jerry McBride / Durango Herald file)

Cities along US Highway 160 should expect about a quarter of an inch of rain on Tuesday, with some areas potentially seeing higher, localized rainfall of about half an inch.

“For Durango, Cortez, and Pagosa Springs, I would expect at least a quarter of an inch,” said Walter.

As for snow, Silverton is expected to get about an inch of powder in town, with about 5 to 20 inches in the higher elevations of the San Juan Mountains.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration released its winter outlook for temperature, precipitation and drought on Thursday. This is the second year in a row La Niña, according to NOAA. The seasons of La Niña are caused by above-average sea surface temperatures in the tropical Pacific.

“The southwest is sure to remain a region of concern as we anticipate below-average rainfall with the drought continuing in most areas,” said Jon Gottschalck of NOAA’s Climate Prediction Center.

In southwest Colorado, temperatures are expected to be 40 to 50% higher than normal, rainfall 33 to 40% lower than normal, and drought conditions expected to worsen.

“Any moisture is definitely welcome,” said Walter.

It is assumed that this record was not from an actual earthquake. This may be due to some other (unknown) event that causes tremors, e.g. B. Explosions, sonic booms, weather or other human or natural causes. Even officially reported earthquakes are sometimes removed again later when seismic signals that were initially processed automatically are later manually reinterpreted so that they do not originate from real earthquakes.

This can happen when initial automatic calculations return an earthquake, but turn out to be incorrect in subsequent (manual) revision.

The first report is below:

Our surveillance service AllQuakes received reports of an earthquake in or near San Francisco, California, USA at around 7:56 GMT. Unless at least one national or international seismological agency confirms this, their status remains unconfirmed.
