San Francisco’s public school staff just started their third school year with a faulty payroll system, and the district is still slogging through a backlog of 3,000 issues. 

Last month, almost 1,000 public school employees received their paychecks days late.

For employees of the San Francisco Unified School District, a mundane-sounding glitch in a payroll system that went live in January 2022 brought real-world consequences, including  canceled insurance benefits during health emergencies, tax-filing nightmares and delayed retirement contributions. Some school district staff even had to borrow money to pay their rent. 

The district has spent more than $40 million on the system—called EMPowerSF, configured using software by SAP America—and says progress has been made. But the leader of the United Educators of San Francisco union wants the district to pull the plug.

“This system’s gotta go,” said the union’s president, Cassondra Curiel. “There’s only so long you can squeeze a round peg in a square hole.”

The district adopted EMPowerSF with high hopes for replacing an antiquated, 17-year-old system that was paper-heavy and tracked its $1 billion budget on Google Sheets. It contracted with SAP America in 2018 and, later, its subsidiary, SAP Public Services.

The school district selected SAP, even though problems linked to the company’s payroll software had made headlines in other jurisdictions. The best-known instance came in 2016 when the software company settled with the California State Controller’s Office for $59 million after an exchange of lawsuits.

So why did San Francisco school officials still choose SAP? And will they pull the plug, too? 

‘I Don’t See It Getting Better’

Although it’s the namesake behind the SAP Center, home to the National Hockey League’s San Jose Sharks, German-founded SAP—originally called System Analysis Program Development—is hardly an instantly recognizable corporation like, say, Oracle or AT&T. In the world of California government, SAP is rather infamous.

The company’s connections to payroll snafus are extensive. In 2005, Los Angeles Community College District officials called a troubled transition to a SAP-powered system “horrific” after reports of missing pay. Two years later, a new $95 million payroll system held up by SAP software left thousands of Los Angeles Unified School District employees without checks. That episode took about a year to stabilize, and SAP remains in use there today. 

In 2010, Marin County stopped a $30 million SAP project, leading to a legal battle with the implementation contractor, Deloitte. The same year, the State Controller’s Office hired SAP for what was then billed as the largest payroll modernization project in the country. In 2013, it ended its $90 million contract with the software company after the project’s pilot stage became overwhelmed with errors. 

The ordeal was so colossal that it was the subject of a 2013 California Legislature report, which highlighted lapses in due diligence and disagreements about contractual responsibilities. The settlement stemming from another legal battle, which granted $59 million to the state with no admission of fault for either party, came one year before San Francisco school officials sought contractors for a new payroll system in 2017. 

“Every time SAP is implemented, it seems to fail,” said Bilal Mahmood, an entrepreneur and 2022 Assembly District 17 candidate who analyzed San Francisco’s implementation errors. “The legacy companies—the SAPs, the Oracles—they know how to navigate the government procurement process.”

As the 2013 state report shows, the Controller’s Office ordeal led to questions about how well software like SAP’s can work for public entities with numerous departments and labor agreements. But a payroll transition’s success also comes down to preparation and management.

“SAP has a long and successful track record of partnering with thousands of public sector organizations including the San Francisco Unified School District,” the company said in a statement. “We are fully committed to ensuring our customers realize the value of their digital investments, and in this case more specifically, the long term sustainability and success of the SFUSD.”

The decision-making process is somewhat opaque. A public records request conducted by The Standard did not yield any documentation indicating how the district came to pick SAP out of a pile of software companies from the 2017 public contract proposal process. It is unclear how many bids were made, which was the cheapest or whether SAP had addressed recent issues with transitions.

A district spokesperson did not respond to questions regarding EMPowerSF’s origins and future. 

The district’s Service Employees International Union chapter, whose president has called the new system “the worst thing to come to the district,” is similarly in the dark, despite repeated questions about why the school district chose this particular system. And though union leaders acknowledge that the decision to bring in expensive consultants—now costing over $15 million—has greatly improved the situation, they don’t see a great future for workers when it comes to EMPowerSF.

“I don’t have any faith this program is going to get any better,” said Antonae Robertson, the chapter’s vice president. “I don’t see it getting worse, but I don’t see it getting better.”

Many technical aspects of the contracts were written to the district’s disadvantage, according to a Standard analysis. For example, Infosys, the information technology firm that was hired to put the software into action, did not have a contractual responsibility to remedy issues with the system. The district was also responsible for migrating data between the old system and the new.

Mahmood stressed that he has great empathy for government entities changing payroll systems, as software must be customized to account for all their intricacies. The problem compounds for districts like San Francisco that reported gaps in documentation needed to plug into the payroll system, he added. 

After combing through the district’s contracts, Omid Ghamami, a procurement consulting expert who reviewed the paperwork at the request of The Standard, highlighted another red flag: that the district switched from one major payroll provider to another rather than modernizing the preexisting PeopleSoft system by Oracle. 

“I would suspect they blamed these issues on the system rather than their own procedures,” Ghamami said. “When they switched to another system, they got a rude awakening. The worst thing they could do is let history repeat itself.”

Keep or Ditch? 

Under Superintendent Matt Wayne, who began his post in July 2022, the district has simplified and addressed many issues with district operations identified as the major causes of its payroll misery. Several key vacancies in business services, technology and human resources departments continue to be filled as the caseload is increasingly tamed. 

“We’re in a very different place than we were a year ago,” Wayne said at the Aug. 8 board meeting. “[There’s] a lot of work to do, but there has been progress. You have my continued commitment to make this work for us because we need to focus, as I said, on our [academic] goals—which is what we’re really here for.” 

Since 2018, the district has spent at least $43 million across seven contractors to launch the system and clean up the mess, according to a Standard analysis of related records. Of that, SAP accounted for $5.9 million. 

In addition, the district hired another consultant for $2.6 million to stabilize its business operations, including payroll, through July 2024.

How much longer until EMPowerSF works for the district remains to be seen. The smart move in 2017 would have been to upgrade PeopleSoft, Ghamami said. The smart move now, he added, would probably be to stick with SAP, due to the district’s sunk costs.

Curiel, the educators’ union president, however, has seen enough. The union staged a takeover of district offices in March 2022 to secure agreements for timely replacement checks and interest for delayed payments, but it’s unclear when the district will be in a place to tally all that up. 

Meanwhile, workers still have a tough time understanding their paychecks and what may have gone wrong. An official union complaint is working its way through a state system. 

Frank Lara, the union’s vice president, has fielded complaint after complaint from members. This year, he watched his own help ticket move painfully slowly through the system while he was charged an extra $850 a month for health care his family did not receive. 

“It just gets lost,” Lara told The Standard. “There’s some key system issues that may not be solvable.”

FARGO — Doug Burgum is about to enter a crowded field of candidates vying for the Republican presidential nomination as an unknown figure on the national political stage.

But one early job on Burgum’s resume could help the dark-horse candidate stand out: chimney sweep.

While attending North Dakota State University, Burgum hired himself out as a chimney sweep. The unusual occupation was featured in the student newspaper, with a photo of Burgum, in top hat and tuxedo on a snowy roof, and was picked up by a wire service.

The admissions office at Stanford University saw the article — and Burgum was admitted to its master’s of business administration program.

There, he met Steve Ballmer, who would go on to become CEO of Microsoft and an influential business adviser for Burgum.

After a stint as a consultant at McKinsey & Co., Burgum mortgaged a quarter section of farmland homesteaded by his grandfather to invest $250,000 in a fledgling business software firm called Great Plains Software in 1983.

Burgum, having bet a good part of his inheritance, was unnerved to learn that the business software industry then in its infancy was crowded with competitors, but was able to distinguish his firm with top-notch customer service, a lesson learned from his family’s grain elevator business in Arthur.

The willingness to take a big risk — moderated by working assiduously to improve his odds of success — would prove to be an attribute that would help define Burgum’s rise in business and his later career as a politician.

“Betting the farm,” as Burgum later would describe his source of startup capital, would prove to be a good wager. When Great Plains broke ground at its south Fargo campus, Burgum harnessed a horse-drawn plow to mark the occasion.

In 2001, less than two decades after Burgum tied his future to Great Plains, with Ballmer at its helm, Microsoft bought Great Plains for $1.1 billion. Burgum stayed on as a Microsoft senior vice president until 2007, then turned his focus to serving as an investor and director on the corporate boards of early-stage software companies.

Freed of the responsibilities of running a company, Burgum also took his business chops in a new direction, real-estate development, which would allow him to indulge his interest in architecture.

He had formed a company, Kilbourne Group, named after his mother’s maiden surname. When Burgum was a boy, his mother took him on walks through downtown Fargo, pointing to notable buildings and telling him their background — a history lesson that helped to inspire what would become a major private downtown renewal project.

Kilbourne Group bought and renovated many distinctive downtown landmarks, including the Black Building, and built the 23-story RDO tower.

It became Fargo’s tallest building, although deliberately shorter than the skyscraping state Capitol, striking a note that was audacious and restrained at the same time.

One of the buildings Kilbourne Group acquired and renovated, the former St. Mark’s Lutheran Church, became the Sanctuary Event Center, where on Wednesday, June 7, Burgum will take the stage to announce his candidacy for the Republican nomination for president.

As a real estate developer, Burgum preached the virtues of dense, downtown development as a way to enliven communities, prevent urban sprawl and save money by avoiding the need to extend expensive public infrastructure and services to the city’s fringe.

Later, as governor, he would promote the same themes through his Main Street initiative, saying that communities must offer attractive amenities to attract workers.

Burgum has made philanthropic contributions, including his family’s support of the Plains Art Museum and his donation of the former Northern School Supply building to his alma mater, NDSU, which became Renaissance Hall, which houses the university’s visual arts department and much of its architecture department.

Although a campaign contributor, Burgum was never visibly active in politics until he entered the 2016 governor’s race after Jack Dalrymple announced that he wouldn’t seek a second term, leaving an open seat.

But a major obstacle stood in his way: Wayne Stenehjem, who had served more than 20 years as attorney general and was the presumptive Republican nominee.

Burgum entered the race trailing by almost 50 points. He sought the endorsement at the party convention, not expecting to win, he said, and finished third.

During the convention, Burgum played up to his outsider image by lecturing the delegates, many of them state legislators, whom he criticized for allowing state government spending to balloon unsustainably on their watch.

His strategy all along was to win the GOP primary, and he made a point of visiting every community in the state with at least 1,000 people, often talking to very small gatherings, especially at first, and filling notebooks with ideas from his encounters with voters.

Burgum roared back from his drubbing at the convention with a convincing victory over Stenehjem, taking 60% of the vote in the primary — and cruising on to beat his Democratic rival by capturing more than 76% in the general election.

Some of Burgum’s famous friends from his time at Microsoft were among his prominent financial supporters during his first campaign for governor. Microsoft founder Bill Gates contributed $107,000 and Satya Nadella, who succeeded Ballmer as Microsoft CEO and who had worked under Burgum at Microsoft’s Fargo campus for 5½ years, donated $10,000.

During the campaign, Burgum ran as an entrepreneur and businessman, with a pitch that he was the right person to apply his tech savvy to reinvent state government through greater efficiency, and to help diversify the economy, too reliant on energy and farm commodities subject to whipsawing price swings.

Once in office, Burgum sometimes clashed with the Republican-dominated Legislature. Although he pledged party unity after winning the divisive primary contest with Stenehjem, Burgum didn’t shy away from tangling with those in his own party.

Burgum showed himself willing to dip into his personal fortune to fund a political group that worked to defeat fellow Republicans who had resisted his initiatives, most prominently former Rep. Jeff Delzer, R-Underwood, who had been the powerful chairman of the House Appropriations Committee, who was at odds with some of Burgum’s spending priorities.

During the 2022 election cycle, records showed Burgum gave at least $935,000 to the Dakota Leadership PAC, which ran an advertising blitz against Delzer, who lost the GOP primary endorsement. Burgum spent much more in 2020, bankrolling the group’s ad campaign with contributions of more than $3.2 million.

Burgum’s internecine quarrels rankled some of his fellow Republicans, some of whom were legislators who were in a position to make their displeasure known, but Burgum didn’t alter course.

As governor, Burgum has championed energy policy. Unusual for a Republican, he set a goal of using innovation and incentives to achieve carbon neutrality in North Dakota by 2030, exploiting North Dakota’s policy and geological advantages in storing carbon dioxide deep underground.

He boasted that as of 2021 companies had responded by pouring $25 billion of investments into energy initiatives in the state.

In contrast to many of his fellow Republican governors, Burgum’s response to the public health threat posed by the COVID-19 pandemic included support for vaccination and, in the early days of the pandemic, targeted business shutdowns and a mask mandate as measures to prevent hospitals from being overrun with cases.

Chafing at the state interventions, the Republican-dominated Legislature responded in 2021 by passing a law allowing legislators to call a special session, with the power to “terminate, extend, or modify” a state of disaster or emergency declared by a governor.

Burgum’s drive for efficiencies in state government draws upon his background in technology and business.

He sounds like the McKinsey consultant he once was when he makes the case for better cash management of state funds, and he sounds like a former software executive when he rhapsodizes about the need for information technology upgrades that are more consumer friendly.

Burgum has never emphasized socially conservative positions and has generally refrained from joining the “culture war” debates that animate many in a party dominated by Donald Trump. In 2020, Burgum said the state Republican Party’s position on LGBTQ issues was “divisive and divisional.”

Still, in the recently completed legislative session, Burgum signed a near-total abortion ban bill as well as several laws restricting transgender rights. Earlier, in 2021, he signed a law banning the teaching of critical race theory in North Dakota public schools.

North Dakota leaders shouldn’t forget that the state is in constant competition for capital and for talent — skilled workers — and be seen as welcoming both, he has said.

Burgum has twice been endorsed by Trump, and has endorsed the former president he now is challenging for the nomination. He has said he would vote for Trump if he is the Republican nominee in 2024, a choice he regards as preferable to President Joe Biden, the likely Democratic nominee.

In seeking the nomination, Burgum is betting that what he has called a “silent majority” of voters who shun the ideological fringes would welcome a pragmatist over a divisive ideologue. He knows that he will have to overcome his underdog status as a governor of a small, rural state who is unknown in national politics.

“There’s a value to being underestimated all the time,” Burgum said, recalling that he had no endorsements in his first race. “That’s a competitive advantage.”

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — John Riccitiello, the CEO of video game software company Unity, has seen the video game industry evolve and transform over the course of a career spanning more than two decades, beginning in 1997 when he became CEO of gaming giant Electronic Art .

Unity Software Inc. was founded in Denmark and is now based in San Francisco. The company is working with Apple to bring gaming to its upcoming Vision Pro virtual reality headset. Riccitiello recently spoke to The Associated Press about how artificial intelligence is changing the way video games are created and played.

The Associated Press: What are the biggest trends in gaming?

Riccitiello: I think AI is going to change gaming in pretty profound ways. One of them is to make games faster, cheaper and better. It’s already happening. I mean, you can already use AI for digital people and editing environments and all sorts of things that make it faster. It will also be possible to have experiences that were never possible before.

Q: Can you give some examples?

Riccitiello: You know Call of Duty, you know Grand Theft Auto, you know Candy Crush. Every one of these games, every single thing you see in this game, and every line of dialogue, every environment, every light effect was programmed by someone who expected you to use it. So the scope of the game is the content that is available on the DVD or for download on the internet. There is none left. It is what it is. They can expand it over time by patching games and adding levels. “Candy Crush” shipped at about 50 and now it’s what?

A: 10,000 I think.

Riccitiello: So they keep building. But each one is a self-contained experience. So I was involved in the release of The Sims in 2000 and it was a wonderful game. And you know how they used “Simlish” right? Did you know why? Because there are so many things to do in The Sims, it’s like an insane amount of interactions to have because you’re actually creating characters. These characters interact with each other. No writer could ever write all the appropriate dialogue for it. When finished it will be as big as the Library of Congress.

Q: I think I know where you’re going with this.

A: I’m sure you know where I’m going. The way GPT 4 works, you can define the parameters. A gamer could do this, or the game studio could do it. The game studio could allow the player to describe that character or their motivations in the same way they write in prompts to restore dialogue. And they could do this for all of their characters in advance. And the AI ​​could appear in any language you want – English, Russian, Japanese, French, doesn’t matter. I think this is a breakthrough. It’s really hard to overstate how important this is. It lives.

Another example would be one of my favorite games of all time, Grand Theft Auto. And a lot of people like “Red Dead (Redemption)” because they’re such brilliant, realized worlds. Sam and Dan Houser, the guys who developed it at Take-Two Rockstar Games, are among the most powerful developers in history. But again, every store robbery, everything in the game was something they thought possible. Now what you can do is create this world and basically create a series of things like “This is the store”, “This is a criminal or not a criminal” or a player can say “This is a Criminals.” And then anything you can think of is possible, any interaction that would take place between the store and the criminals, including looking for a job there – I mean, anything is possible.

Q: But within the guidelines?

A: You wouldn’t have to have any policies, but it would look like a complete mess if you didn’t have anything. Some of these guard rails enable creativity.

Q: What do you think of the metaverse?

A: I always found the word cluttered and kind of stupid. I gave a talk a few years ago saying that I banned the people at Unity from using it because I thought it would be overused and thrown in the trash. That it has been used and abused by people for their own ends.

But then I defined the metaverse as something very different than what most people do.

Q: How do you define it?

A: I said it’s the next version of the internet. It’s 3D instead of 2D. It’s more persistent than not, more real-time than not. And often there are a number of other things. And then I tried to explain what it wasn’t. It wasn’t about avatars, it wasn’t about XR. It certainly wasn’t about half-embodied avatars (which, by the way, were based on Meta’s Unity). I was very happy that they built it and paid us, but I just didn’t believe it was what it was.

We have clients like Hyundai who are building the factory of the future where all the robots and humans will interact and control in this large environment. And the people who work in the factory do their jobs on iPhones.

It will not be a universal 3D world. I think it will be more of a series of very immersive experiences. And a lot of people, I think, dominate in a way that I can’t believe, “No, no, you’re going to want to be on Amazon, then you go straight to Call of Duty and you go straight in.” See watch the NFL show and then go straight into your chat. And the thing is, it’s really hard to get this to work. People say, “Well, what if I want to throw a Call of Duty bomb at a chessboard I’m playing?” And you have to ask yourself: Would you really ever want to do that beyond the first time?

Cruise, the autonomous vehicle company majority-owned by GM, notified the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration of a recall of its 300 self-driving vehicles after a fender flare in San Francisco. The autonomous Chevrolet Bolt, traveling about ten miles an hour, braked too late after a San Francisco Municipal Transit Authority articulated bus — the kind with two solid cars connected by a hinged accordion section — pulled up in front of the car and stopped . In papers filed with the government agency and in a blog post on Cruise’s website, Cruise leader Dan Vogt wrote that “the collision was caused by an issue related to predicting the unique movements of articulated vehicles under rare circumstances.” such as question and tractor trailer.

The accident happened on March 23. There were no casualties and only moderate damage to the Bolt’s front. Cruise engineers investigated the issue and conducted their software recall on March 25th – which meant releasing an OTA update, that’s all.

The bus wasn’t to blame. We were told that the self-driving software took the entire bus into account as the bus pulled out of a stop in front of the vehicle. However, since the articulated front end appeared first as the rear section of the bus pulled out, the software processed “the expected behavior of the previously blocked front section of the bus” and “since the AV had previously seen the front section and recognized that it was moving the bus could flex, it predicted the bus would move as connected parts, with the rear part following the predicted path of the front part.” The software did issue the stop command, but too late, hence the bumper car moment.

The self-driving cruise vehicles only operate in certain areas of San Francisco between 10 p.m. and 5 a.m., but it is certain that they have had countless interactions near and around articulated buses. Vogt wrote, “Fender bends like this rarely happen to our AVs, but this incident was unique.” Autonomous industry observers call this type of incident a “borderline case,” the rare traffic incident that a human knows how to handle but is difficult or impossible to program until it occurs. This is how the errors are found.

San Francisco authorities don’t like the technique, however. Cruise and competitor Waymo plan to expand, the San Francisco County Transportation Authority petitioned the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) in January to deny any expansion after dealing with “92 unique incidents affecting the city between May 29 and 2019.” were reported by December 31st. 2022.”

Vogt wrote in his post on the Cruise website: “We will no doubt continue to discover ways in which we can improve. … These continuous improvements are likely to make voluntary recalls commonplace. We believe this is one of the great advantages of autonomous vehicles compared to human drivers; our entire fleet of AVs can improve rapidly, and we’re able to carefully monitor that progress over time.”

“It started about four years ago,” explained Szabo. “At that time I was single and what does a single software developer do? He develops a dating app.”

Last month, BrainBox AI announced the first installation of its HVAC monitoring software in New York City.

In information it sent to GlobeSt.com, the company claims that a building operator can gain up to 25% in total energy cost savings within three months, a 20% to 40% reduction in carbon footprint, and a 50% improvement in HVAC- related operations and maintenance costs.

Not that this is BrainBox’s first attempt. The company says that over three years it has gained installations in 100 million square feet of commercial real estate across nearly 20 countries.

“We do something very simple,” Frank Sullivan, BrainBox AI’s chief commercial officer, tells GlobeSt.com. “Inside buildings large and small, largely commercial malls and multi retail, resides HVAC equipment. We optimize the way that equipment behaves.”

The approach uses Internet-connected control equipment, machine learning (where software uses data feedback to improve its operations), and third-party data like weather and occupancy.

The software doesn’t replace maintenance and HVAC staff in buildings. Instead, it uses data to make multiple changes in buildings per hour and anticipates what conditions need to be in the immediate future.

Buildings have thermal reaction times—or, as Sullivan says, they “glide.” Turning heat or air conditioning on doesn’t immediately warm or cool a space and turning the HVAC system off doesn’t right away cease affecting the temperature. The amount and rate of change depends on current and arriving or departing occupancy, external temperatures, and patterns of use throughout a building. For example, why spend energy on changing the air temperature of an area in the morning that isn’t generally used until later in the day? Or assume that the HVAC needs in April are the same as those in October?

“We’re not taking next week’s weather prediction, but three to six hours in advance, using weather sources closest to the building,” Sullivan says. It takes about three months for the company to create the initial model and then for the machine learning algorithms to make adjustments in response to building-specific data, with the system ultimately providing “a high degree of certainty around the space temperature two to three hours in advance.” While building classes and locations differ, the aggregate information from all of them is useful. “The more data allows us to be more confident with our predictions and provide in many cases a much better outcome.”

Last June, when most of the world remained closed, the Svane Family Foundation commissioned Bay Area artists with $ 10,000 each to create 100 new works, and paid out a total of $ 1 million. It was the foundation’s first program since its inception in 2019, and now the next phase is starting: an online auction and exhibition of the works resulting from the project entitled “Ark” at the San Francisco Art Institute from 7 to 27 May September. (Proceeds from the sale will benefit Bay Area ArtSpan, a nonprofit.)

We spoke to foundation founder Mikkel Svane, who is also CEO of software company Zendesk, about his move to collecting and how art philanthropy has made him rethink his own buying habits.

What was your first purchase (and how much did you pay for it)?

There are pieces in my collection that date back to a childhood portrait, so it’s almost impossible to remember when you first bought it. What really changed my approach to collecting was the Hospitality House Community Arts Program in San Francisco’s Tenderloin, next to our Zendesk office. I got drawn into it and ended up talking to people who lived in really difficult circumstances, but who had this opportunity to support themselves with their work. I was amazed how this studio and gallery could do such a good job of struggling with so much people, embracing the raw expression of life in this part of town, and that my art purchases were of immediate benefit to the life of the Artist would have. I think the first piece I bought there was by Charles Blackwell, and since then many, many works have been created. Eventually I started helping organize their annual fundraising auction, which resulted in my overall commitment to the local art scene here.

What was your last purchase?

Works by Camila Fernandez, Donna Personna, Lord Fredrick and Alicia Mccarthy, all on the Hospitality House auction. And a couple of random Danish nature paintings that remind me of home.

Which works or artists would you like to add to your collection this year?

One of Woody De Othello’s ceramic pieces that has not yet come out of the gallery. There’s only so much space on the wall so you’ll have to collect media that don’t need it! There can be a lot of ceramics this year. I also recently bought Jackie Browns Cheetah camo and chiaozzas Bouquet sculpture No. 2 by Hashimoto Contemporary.

What is the most expensive work of art you own?

I have to insist that what you get out of a piece does not correlate with its price. I think my favorite piece I own is a Joe Turek painting. White collarwhich was not expensive, but really impressed me during the time I lived with it.

Where do you most often buy art?

Of course our local galleries, especially Jessica Silverman Gallery, Hashimoto Contemporary, Part 2 Gallery, Rebecca Camacho Presents, the Luggage Store and Gallery Wendi Norris. Artistic is a great pastime. And I follow these little auctions in Europe – there are so many jewels to discover there. I just found something special Robert Bechtle painting from an auction in Paris.

Is there a job that you regret buying?

My only regret is that I’m limited to how much I can collect. Wall space is limited, especially city life. We just moved to find more!

What work do you have hanging over your sofa? How does it look in your bathroom?

Now that we’re moving it’s up for discussion, but before packing we had a piece of Art Collaboration twfive, Venus and the swans, above a sofa. Above others were Emilio Villalbas Six pack, a painting of cigarettes (I always say collecting art is like smoking, it’s fun, and addicting), and Tammy Rae Carlands I’m dying here (Carole + Mitzi) –all “Ark” artists – and Peter Gronquists Ferns and roses. I hang my kids’ pictures in the bathroom and bedroom mixed with the professional artists so they are some of the first and last works I see today.

What’s the most impractical piece of art you own?

This huge painting by Casey Gray, The pursuit of happinessthat I wasn’t sure would even fit in the house. We had to test it out before buying it. Also a Jeppe Hein sculpture made of two balloons, Wishes for twothat you need to fix to the ceiling with magnets. But I never buy art for practical reasons other than to support local artists and keep the city creative and interesting.

What work would you have liked to have bought when you had the opportunity?

That’s the thing, you almost always regret it if you don’t react faster. Dashiell Manley’s last show on Jessica Silverman is a huge regret. Got a little bit, but hesitated too long with my feet and missed what I really wanted.

At the beginning of the pandemic, I couldn’t buy anything. It just felt absurd. But then I realized how important it was to support local artists financially as all their options dried up, and to support them emotionally – to encourage them to keep working. So we made the Svane Family Foundation’s first program a commissioned composition of 100 pieces that will be featured on the Ark show in September. It was a bit of a revelation – why spend $ 1 million on a single work when that amount can support a whole community of artists?

If you could steal a piece of art without getting caught, which one would it be?

There is this very special piece at SFMOMA, Robert Bechtle Alameda Gran Torino (1974), a painting of a car with wood paneling. It reminds me of my father who grew up in the USA during the war and always told us these stories when I grew up in Denmark. It represents that kind of Americana that I associate with my childhood and my father.
