After an 0-3 start, SSFAC has rebounded to win 3 out of their last 5 matches. They came back from a tough loss to Goal Busters, to have an amazing come from behind win over San Mateo Dinamo. Trailing 3-1 early in the second half of that game, South City rallied for 5 unanswered goals to win 6-3. They followed that up with a 6-0 shutout win over Assyria FC. This past weekend saw the team battle the top club in the Majors Central Division, Rovers FC. It was a hard fought match which saw Rovers eke out a 1-0 win.

The team now takes a week off for the holiday and then resumes play on Sunday, December 6th when they again play San Mateo Dinamo, only this time it is in the First Round of the Abronzino PSL Cup. The match is set for El Camino High School with kickoff at 10:30 am. Hope you’ll come out to support the team

From all of us at SSFAC…..Happy Thanksgiving to all of you !!

Plans for a new indoor soccer facility in South San Francisco at 152 Utah Ave. received positive Planning Commission feedback to help add a community amenity for young people.

“Anything that helps our young people get more physically active and even our adults get more physically active in the community is only going to be a benefit,” Planning Commissioner Sarah Funes-Ozturk said at a May 18 Planning Commission meeting.

The existing 15,000-square-foot building will have a 38-by-92-foot soccer field with a synthetic turf surface for soccer players of all ages and levels for games and practices. The indoor facility will be in a one-story warehouse building on the south side of Utah Avenue, east of Corey Way. The 41,665-square-foot project site is bordered by Utah Avenue to the north, industrial, warehouse and commercial uses to the south and west and Colma Creek to the east. The site used to be an Old Master Products hardwood flooring business. Nearby businesses include Farmers Insurance, a sewage treatment plant and The Adam Hill Company.

Business hours would be 4-11 p.m. Monday through Friday and 9 a.m. to 11 p.m. on the weekends. The number of players allowed at a time in the building would be 24, with a maximum occupancy of 28. There are 37 parking spaces provided based on traffic studies on peak parking demand in other similar soccer facilities in the Bay Area.

The commission approved the use permit for the site because it will help fill a community gap and add another amenity for young people. Planning Commissioner John Baker said indoor sports facilities east of Highway 101 were essential for the community, citing his time as a former coach in the South San Francisco youth baseball leagues.

“I will be voting in favor of this because it is needed and complies with the zoning,” Baker said.

Martín Castillo immigrated from Peru with one goal in mind: soccer.

He was 19 years old, barely spoke English and had no family living in the Bay Area. Yet his passion for soccer compelled him to leave Lima, his parents and four younger siblings to try out for the pro team that would later become the San Jose Earthquakes.

“We came (to the Bay Area) with a conviction of trying to change things for us, so it came with a vision for all of us to pursue a career, pursue a dream,” said Antonio Castillo, Martín’s younger brother, who immigrated from Peru more than two years after Martín to also pursue a Major League Soccer career. “Soccer didn’t work out, so we started working on the next. We are here right now with a new dream, and the hard work is still happening.”

The new dream began in 2002 when Martín, Antonio and Eduardo Castillo opened a Peruvian restaurant in San Francisco. They named it Limón, which translates to “lime,” to pay homage to a staple ingredient in Peruvian cuisine and to their hometown of Lima. Limón has since expanded to Walnut Creek, Oakland, Burlingame and, now, Mountain View. As a testament to its influence in the Bay Area, late San Francisco Mayor Ed Lee declared Oct. 25 Limón Day in 2011.

The downtown Mountain View location opened its doors last month at 800 California St., at the corner of Castro Street. It was nearly three years in the making, according to the Castillos, largely due to the lengthy permit process.

Band of brothers

The Castillo brothers’ journey to success wasn’t easy.

“Leaving my house in the beginning was hard,” Martín said. “At one point … I wasn’t sure I was going to stay because here I was by myself, barely speaking English.”

But when Martín learned his brother Antonio was also joining him in the Bay Area, he knew he would stay. And a few years after Antonio arrived, their brother Eduardo joined as well.

“I was a dishwasher, a janitor,” Antonio said. “My brothers were cooks, bussers, bar backs.”

And on weekends, the brothers continued to play soccer recreationally. After the games, it became a tradition for the players to come over to the brothers’ house in Daly City for a feast. The brothers prepared dishes inspired by their mom’s cooking, with techniques they picked up working in American restaurants.

“In our house, our mom was the chef of the family,” Antonio recalled. “Every large event that we had, my mom was always the one who made the food and created a menu. She was a really great, creative cook. So, since we were little kids, we were introduced to the cuisine and the flavors without knowing it.”

The after-soccer gatherings gained traction, becoming larger and more elaborate. Guests suggested the Castillo brothers start their own restaurant, noting that quality Peruvian food was hard to come by in San Francisco.

They soon opened Limón in a small space of approximately 25 seats on 17th Street in San Francisco. And it was a hit.

“A lot of our menu is inspired by our childhood,” Martín said. “The flavors are what we grew up with, and that’s what we try to do here. We like to play with the food. We collaborate on ideas. That’s how we come up with something unique.”

Much of the menu at Limón is inspired by the owners’ childhood.

Adrienne Mitchel/Town Crier

Limón serves modernized versions of traditional Peruvian food. Many of Limón’s dishes use chimichurri, a bright and herbaceous Argentinian sauce. The plating for Limón’s Arroz con Mariscos, or “rice with seafood,” is inspired by Spanish paella. And Limón even incorporates crispy calamari into ceviche in its dish called Carretillero Travieso.

When asked what it’s like to be in business with his two brothers for more than 20 years, Antonio said, with a laugh, “I mean, we haven’t killed each other.” He went on to explain that the three brothers have complementary talents.

“Martín is the brain and the creative in the kitchen, I run the dining room and the numbers, and Eduardo is in the kitchen also being right next to him,” Antonio said. “We are super invested in the business. We are our own first critics. We’ve been learning from ourselves for the past 20 years.”

Mom’s influence

Most of all, the brothers attribute their success to their mom, Luz.

“Our mom is the person who inspired us to be here today,” Martín said. “We have some items on the menu that were inspired by her. Who we are today is because of our mom. Learning, working, dedication, cooking skills are all from our mom, watching our mom, learning from our mom.”

And if patrons are lucky, they might even run into Luz at one of Limón’s locations.

“Sometimes she shows up,” Martín said. “Sometimes she still comes and jumps behind the kitchen. Our mom is a big part of our success.”

The Castillo brothers said they look forward to the opening of their seventh Limón location, anticipated in November or December in Redwood City.

During Thursday’s Bloomberg Technology Summit in San Francisco, San Francisco Mayor London Breed proposed replacing the rapidly derelict San Francisco Center mall entirely with something else, even going so far as to have it torn down for a new soccer stadium .

In recent years, the San Francisco Center shopping mall has experienced a rapid decline. While the mall was valued at $1.2 billion at 100% occupancy in 2016, the decade’s spike in crime, the COVID-19 pandemic, a dramatic drop in foot traffic, and other factors quickly led to that shops left the mall. Last month, a key anchor, Nordstrom, announced that it would exit the mall over the next few months, reducing overall capacity to 55%.

As bad news continued to pour in, the mall’s operator, Westfield, said earlier this month it would stop making payments for the property and ownership would pass to the bank. This prompted one of the mall’s largest tenants, Cinemark, to announce its abrupt closure last week, bringing its occupancy rate below 50%. Since then, other companies have signaled that they may soon exit the mall as well.

San Francisco is on the verge of another large building with low occupancy in the city, and many suggestions have been made in recent weeks about what to do with the property. Some want the mall to continue, while others propose office space, housing, and even converting part of it into a vast recreation area. But when Mayor Breed was asked Thursday what to do with the property, he didn’t opt for the usual conversion of office and residential buildings, instead proposing demolishing the mall and building a stadium there or creating a large laboratory space.

“We can no longer fully rely on downtown retail to limit what’s happening downtown,” Breed said. “You can transform certain spaces. A Westfield shopping center could become something completely different from what it is now. It could be a place where we could even demolish the whole building and build a whole new football stadium. We could create lab space or consider it a new company in a different capacity. Airbnb’s San Francisco headquarters is housed in a former jewelry market.

“Companies need to reinvest in the city community and think even more creatively about ways to use space. Instead of delving into another business’ stories, let’s look at what’s possible. There are many people who might not even shop there. Do I want to come back to the office every five days a week? Of course I would. But will that happen? Probably not. So let’s make some adjustments to do our best to re-imagine what parts of San Francisco can look like.”

The mall

Experts told the Globe on Friday that while a major transformation of the property was potentially feasible, it would have many ramifications for the city and would not guarantee people would use it.

“Closing a mall or converting part of a mall is never easy,” shopping mall planner and consultant Lydia Price-Davis told The Globe Friday. “If we keep the building, there are few conversion success stories. Some malls, particularly in the south, have been saved as large churches move into former anchor stores and the people who go there boost other businesses. But they don’t use all the space either. Keep in mind that department store floor plans are difficult to convert to anything else, especially when center escalators and odd angles are part of the structure. That’s why it’s so difficult to win back another anchor, and department stores aren’t exactly expanding right now. Wal-Mart, Menard’s, Dollar General—they can’t just move in there either.”

“On the demolition side, you have to make sure it’s used. Mayor Breed mentioned that there was a football stadium there. It’s not the worst idea, but you have to have tenants there first. MLS is out of the picture as San Francisco doesn’t have a team and the closest teams to San Jose are already playing in a new stadium. They could try a women’s league team, a minor league, or most likely college teams mixed in with high school and youth leagues, but that means families have to travel to the city to play games. Due to the lot size parking would be a nightmare.”

“Conversion is probably the best option. But even with that, obviously anyone who doesn’t know what to do with a property like this is worrying. San Francisco is emptying right now. You’re getting some tech back, with AI seeing a boost, but nothing big enough to refill those large retail and office spaces in the short term. It is very concerning.”

Further plans on what to do with the mall are expected to be announced soon.

WASHINGTON (AP) – President Joe Biden argued Wednesday that the pay gap between men and women had hurt the economy and brought members of the U.S. women’s national soccer team to the White House to set new goals for equality.

On Wednesday there was “Equal Pay Day” – that is how long women have to work on average in order to compensate for the difference in wages between what men and women earned in the previous year. The Census Bureau estimates that a full-time woman would make about 82 cents for every dollar paid to a man.

Biden and his wife Jill hosted a round table with Margaret Purce and Megan Rapinoe of the US women’s national soccer team and other members of the squad who participated virtually. The president then signed a proclamation in honor of the day.

“It doesn’t matter if you’re an electrician, an accountant or part of the best football team in the world,” said Biden. “The pay gap is real. And this team is living proof that you can be the best at what you do and still have to fight for equal pay. “

The women’s team has won the World Cup four times, most recently in 2019. In the same year, however, they sued the US Football Association for wage discrimination. The lawsuit was dismissed in May because the women had accepted a different basic pay structure than the men’s soccer team. The women’s team wants to appeal against the dismissal.

“Despite these victories. I was devalued, I was not respected and I was fired because I am a woman, ”Rapinoe said on Wednesday with the President. “And I was told that I deserve nothing more than less because I am a woman.”

The wage gap affects the entire economy in ways that exacerbate other problems, including racial inequality. The National Women’s Law Center found that black women only make 63 cents for a dollar paid to a non-Hispanic white male, while Hispanic women make only 55 cents. This difference translates into a loss of income of approximately $ 1 million over the course of a lifetime.

“These are not just women’s issues,” said Cecilia Rouse, Chair of the White House Economic Advisory Council, at the press conference on Wednesday. “They affect all families, the recoverability of our economy and the competitiveness of our nation.”

The Biden government is pushing for several directives to narrow the gap. It supports the Paycheck Fairness Protection Act, which would improve a 1963 law by improving employer transparency on wages, require employers to demonstrate that all discrepancies are due to professional qualifications, and prevent employers from opposing employees, express concerns about the wage gap.

The administration also supports paid family leave and better access to childcare. A February research paper by the San Francisco Federal Reserve found that the pandemic caused mothers to drop out of the labor market disproportionately as many were lacking school and childcare facilities in class. The paper found that a flexible work schedule would likely make life easier for mothers with jobs.
