NORTHSTAR AT TAHOE (CBS SF) – A California Highway Patrol helicopter equipped with high-tech detection equipment began traversing the skies over the Northstar ski area Thursday morning in hopes of receiving a signal from an avalanche safety beacon who may have picked up missing truckee skier Rory Angelotta.

The Placer County sheriff said Angelotta was a skilled skier and reportedly had avalanche gear with her when he disappeared in a snow storm on Saturday.

The search for missing skier Rory Angelotta on @Northstar_CA resumed today. More than 60 employees met today on the first clear day since the search began on Christmas night.
So far, four days of searching in difficult weather conditions have found no trace of Angelotta.

Tracks in deep snow in a remote mountain area had raised hopes on Tuesday, but then found they were being pulled by a bear.

The last of a series of violent winter storms finally moved east early Thursday. As of December 21st, 135 inches – over 11 feet – of snow have fallen at Northstar.

According to the sheriff’s office, friends of Angelotta reported him missing when he failed to show up for Christmas dinner on Saturday night after a day of skiing. Authorities said his car was found in the resort parking lot and his calls went straight to voicemail.

The sheriff’s social media accounts announced Tuesday that the Nevada Air National Guard was deploying a pioneering infrared-equipped Blackhawk helicopter to assist searchers in the current extreme weather conditions.

The sheriff’s office said other resources put in to assist with the search were Tahoe Nordic Search and Rescue, Placer County Search and Rescue, Nevada County Search and Rescue, Butte County Search and Rescue, Bay Area Mountain Rescue, Tahoe Backcountry Ski Patrol and Northstar California Ski Patrol.

The social media posts featured videos and pictures of the search efforts.

The search for the 43-year-old Truckee resident was hampered by harsh weather conditions that dropped more than four feet of fresh snow. Angelotta was last seen at the Northstar ski resort on Saturday morning.

The investigations have shown that Angelotta’s ski pass was scanned at the Comstockbahn at around 11.30 a.m. No other activity has been recorded on his passport since then.

“Seekers responded and combed the mountain and surrounding areas despite the extreme weather,” said the Placer County Sheriff’s Department. “Rescuers were on their search with skis, snowmobiles and a snowcat. They were confronted with a high risk of avalanches, strong winds, whiteout thunderstorms, icy temperatures and heavy snow loads. “

There have been reports of over 28 major fires across California that experienced a historic heat wave with 14,000 firefighters fighting the fires.

On Wednesday, high winds blew smoke and ash from northern parts of the state, causing residents of the San Francisco area to wake up to dark skies, some thinking it was still night.

In California, wildfires burned more than 2.5 million acres this year. As the fires continue to burn, forecasters expect similar conditions in the coming days.

SAN JOSE (KPIX 5) – It’s never a good day when you can actually see the air you breathe.

The sky over the Bay Area on Tuesday was a variety of shades of gray and orange, a combination of smoke from all fires and overcast skies. The hot, sultry gray-orange is the official color of 2020.

CONTINUE READING: “San Jose Means Business” – fines, possible jail loom for sideshow, street race promoter

“It’s a very strange day,” said Lynn Sanchez of Walnut Creek. “It’s hot, it’s humid, we’re ready for autumn. We want to see some sunshine, we want to see the sky, and that just wasn’t possible. “

When we went to the shitty air on Week 4, it was time to check out the brand new air filter I had installed in our HVAC system on Aug 19th when the fires started. Three weeks later, the bright white filter had turned a dingy gray.

Most of the fine dust particles in the air were high in the atmosphere on Tuesday, at least in the early hours of the morning. Before lunch, San Jose had a decent AQI of 59. But by 2pm it was up to 152.

On Tuesday we found people on Communication Hill in San Jose who were exercising outdoors despite the bad air. Residents Stacy Ramsey and Gabriel Fernandez said they just had to find a way out.

“Especially after I’ve been in quarantine the whole time,” Ramsey said. “Being in a house all the time is depressing.”

For asthmatic Timothy Gutierrez, these days are difficult because he doesn’t have air conditioning at home and literally has to vacuum it.

Antoine Mabrey heard about a free Mother’s Day promotion on the radio when he was home in Hayward, but he kept it to himself when he packed up his wife Alisha and daughters Ari, 6 and Amaya, 3, and drove them to the Golden on Sunday morning Gate Park.

At 9 a.m. they looked at the SkyStar observation wheel, which rose 150 feet into the sky. At this point, Alisha knew that her surprising Mother’s Day present shouldn’t be brunch. It was three trips on the ferris wheel. The tickets were free for mothers, which meant a saving of US $ 18 – “definitely a plus,” said Antoine, not wanting to sound financially motivated on Mother’s Day.

But there were a lot of people because at 9:30 a.m., half an hour before the opening, the line stretched from the ticket office to past the California Academy of Sciences. “I love this thing,” said Erica Spartos, who was there with her daughter Eula, 8.

Spartos admitted that the reason she hadn’t been there was the price. “I think it’s too expensive,” she said, even considering a 15% discount for locals and $ 12 for kids. The trip consists of three full rotations in a closed gondola, which takes about 10 minutes, and that after half an hour of waiting. “It’s starting to spin,” Spartos said as the attraction came to life.

Until then, patience waned. Zion Burdick, 4, had his little brother Maverick, 3, by the hood of his sweatshirt and made a ride of his own by spinning him around in circles. “They’re just alive,” said their mother, Shellie, who shut down the Windsor boys while they left their toddler home with dad, an extra gift.

The SkyStar, owned by a St. Louis-based entertainment company, first arrived in March 2020 as the main attraction for the 150th anniversary of Golden Gate Park on April 4, 2020. The day the wheel joined the skyline was the day of the pandemic stay-home order passed down. The 36 gondolas didn’t make it out of their shipping container until October 21 after the order was canceled, only to close again on November 28 when the virus got caught in a winter flood.

The subsequent reopening on March 4 became controversial when it became known that the Department of Recreation and Parks was looking to extend the original one-year contract by four years. Park purists opposed it, but the expansion was approved after a campaign highlighting the ferris wheel as the engine of economic recovery that could attract tourists and help Richmond District merchants survive the financial struggle of the pandemic.

“It’s ridiculous to fight for a ferris wheel,” said Shellie Burdick. “If we care about things, why don’t we care about climate change?”

The SkyStar spins under the lights day and night, which was another point of criticism. But it was an average of 30,000 passengers a month.

It can run with just six gondolas if there isn’t much demand, with the weather being a deciding factor. On a Sunday, a rainstorm caused an LED light on top of the bike to short-circuit and set off a spark. The people who drove in the six cars were evacuated. Half an hour later, according to the manager, the journey continued without any problems.

Under the sunny Mother’s Day skies, all 36 cars were in operation and the line was moving faster after San Francisco made enough progress against the coronavirus that the ride doesn’t capture the temperatures of all passengers before boarding. They were allowed to go straight to the photo booth that shows the Golden Gate Bridge in the background.

Grant Haggerty, 7, who lives in the Sunset District, was scared to ride it, but once on board with his parents Tom and Alayne Haggerty he was able to enjoy his mother pointing out UCSF Parnassus, where Grant was born. His father pointed to his own birthplace, St. Mary’s Hospital, though that was of limited interest to Grant.

Erica Spartos described the ride as “a complete thrill”. The living green roof of the Academy of Sciences had given it hope against climate change. “It gives you a perspective that you don’t get every day.”

Zion and Maverick Burdick went looking for hot dogs. and Alisha Mabrey left with a cardboard frame that contained photos of her with her husband and daughters, including one that gives the effect of being taken on a skycam while they were in the air.

The framed photos were $ 36.95, which was double the savings on Mother’s Day, but Antoine didn’t want to argue with that. “It was definitely the best Mother’s Day,” said Alisha, “because it was a surprise.”

North Bay companies bringing bus travelers to and from major airports in the San Francisco Bay Area are rumbling back toward prepandemic service.

Shortly after initial home stay orders were placed, Marin Airporter switched to a reduced schedule for transporting passengers to the San Francisco International Airport on March 23, 2020, operating 20 round-trip flights every hour instead of half an hour. According to President Larry Laporte, this will change in the next few months.

“The pandemic made it pretty bad,” he said of the number of passengers per trip, including a number of flight crews that the service regularly carries. “To be honest, we were at a loss for a while to keep the employees.”

The employee-owned company kept 95% of its 130 employees on payroll during the pandemic.

The return to half-hour planning begins initially with Marin Airporter’s peak hours, going back to the airport in the morning and back in the late afternoon and late evening, Laporte said.

Another source of income for Marin Airporter is a contract with the County of Marin for the provision, operation and insurance of public transport buses on nine routes from Sausalito to Novato. The company has a few years left on the last five-year contract.

Sonoma County Airport Express plans to resume service at 3:45 a.m. next Monday, according to The Press Democrat. The company ceased service on March 22, 2020.

But it’s a breeze for airport transfers that run from Napa.

Evans Transportation is still out of service with regards to airport transfer returns due to the pandemic. A voicemail on the company’s phone line said it was closed until further notice. We currently do not have an estimated date for the reopening. “

Napa-Solano Shuttles’ DJ Singh said his company is focused on the airports in Sacramento, Oakland and San Francisco. Business is picking up slowly, but not at the pre-pandemic level.

Sandy Kaur, Napa’s airporter manager, said the company was ready to take calls to and from the San Francisco and Oakland airports.
