SAN FRANCISCO — Sunday’s game between the 49ers and Eagles was exactly what Bay Area fans were waiting for, a grudge match after Philadelphia knocked all of San Francisco’s quarterbacks out of last season’s NFC title game. And, as it turned out, the Kezar Pub in San Francisco was a place that fans from both teams could call home.

The Kezar Pub is normally a Niners hangout but it’s also the bar of choice for Eagles fans to watch their games. As she poured drink after drink, bartender Mary Lemos said the matchup was not just good for football but also good for business.

“It is just as busy — off-the-hook busy — for Eagles as it is off-the-hook busy for Niners,” Lemos said. “If you look around, it’s about 50/50 right now. We expect it to be 50/50 Eagles, Niners.

And while there may be some hard feelings after last season’s disastrous NFC title game, Frankie Fusco brushed off the fact that his fellow Eagles fans once attacked a guy in a Santa suit.

“I think Philadelphia gets a bad rap just because of throwing snowballs at Santa, which was, what, in the 60s? Like, get over it!” he said.

Jordan Lilley, a traveling nurse from Philadelphia, understood that 49ers fans were looking for some payback.

“They’re hyped. They’re ready for revenge after we hurt, what, two of their quarterbacks last year?” she said. “This is Philly territory! We like to dominate enemy territory! Fly, Eagles, fly!

The Eagles dominated the first quarter but only came away with two field goals. In the second quarter, San Franciso scored two touchdowns, ending the half with a comfortable lead.

“This game is very special,” said Niners fan Jeremy Rojas. “Especially the way it ended last year in the NFC Championship game. Kind of feels like we left some meat on the bone with Purdy going down. So, it’s a little bit personal this time around. So that’s why we’re all here.”

After halftime, the 49ers continued scoring, eventually putting the game out of reach. and even those watching from the sidewalk outside the bar had their revenge. Both fan bases had the feeling that this probably isn’t the end.

“Both Niners and Eagles have a tough schedule for the rest of the year,” said 49ers fan Peter Lewczyk. “But, I think, moving forward in the playoffs when we see them again, definitely, it’s going to be another blood bath. It’ll be fun.”

“I think definitely these teams seem like they are on a crash course,” said Eagles fan Philip Zurborg. “I don’t think this is the last time they’ll see each other.”

Which means these fans will probably all be back at the Kezar Pub in January. Meanwhile, the fight is on for home field advantage in the playoffs. After Sunday’s loss, Philadelphia still had a one-game lead but they face Dallas in their next game, putting Niners fans in the uncomfortable position of having to root for the Cowboys.

SAN FRANCISCO (CBS SF / AP) – Citing the growing outbreak of the highly contagious variant of Omicron across the country and California, Governor Gavin Newsom announced on social media that health workers in the state are now COVID. must get booster shots.

In a Twitter video post, Newsom said it was taking steps to ensure there were enough healthy medical staff to handle a possible post-holiday surge in new cases.

“We all watch the news and have heard what President Biden said today about what was happening across the country and the rest of the world with the Omicron variant,” said the governor. “It’s not dissimilar to what’s happening here in the state of California. As a result, we are stepping up our efforts to get people vaccinated, but also to empower people. That’s why we’re going further today and calling for all healthcare workers to be reinforced – get the third admission, or at least the second admission when you get the J&J. “

By February 1, health care workers and all employees in high-risk community facilities, including nursing homes, must have their booster vaccinations. In the meantime, all health care workers who haven’t received their booster vaccinations will have to test for COVID-19 twice a week until they are up to date on their vaccines.

The booster mandate was part of the three-part plan launched at a press conference Wednesday morning to combat the recent surge in infections.

The other two parts of the plan are designed to keep schools open and students in the classroom:

• Expansion of test access and receipt of 1-2 quick tests for each public school student when the children go back to school
• Increase in test times for state-operated locations to expand capacity

In early December, the California Department of Health distributed approximately 2 million tests to schools so that students can be tested when they return to school from winter break.

“The state is also redoubling our efforts to protect children and keep schools open,” said the governor. “We will help prevent the spread of COVID-19 in our communities by providing test kits at home for every student in the K-12 public school when they return to the classroom from their winter break.”

Newson said there are now 191 confirmed cases of the Omicron variant in California and those numbers are accelerating.

“We are holding ourselves strong (in terms of the total number of new COVID cases) but we cannot take anything for granted,” said the governor.

California already requires health care workers to be vaccinated against the coronavirus, a policy that went into effect in September and has since resulted in the layoff or suspension of thousands of people. Now, after New Mexico, it will be at least the second state to require booster injections for healthcare workers.

Last week, Newsom, who issued the first statewide shutdown order in March 2020, warned that cases were likely to increase and reintroduced a rule requiring everyone to wear masks at public gatherings indoors.

The concern stems from the surge in Omicron, which has been the dominant variant of the coronavirus in the United States since Monday. Areas in the Midwest and Northeast have seen the greatest spikes in cases and hospital admissions in freezing temperatures that have kept people indoors.

Much about the variant remains unknown, including whether it causes more or less serious illnesses. Scientists say Omicron spreads more easily than other strains of coronavirus, including Delta. Early studies suggest that those vaccinated need a third vaccination to prevent infection, but even without the extra dose, the vaccination should still offer strong protection from serious illness and death.

California has fared far better than many other states so far. The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention list California, like almost everywhere else in the country, as a place with “high” transmission of the virus. But for the past week California had an average of 114 new cases per 100,000 population, less than half the national rate.

While 70% of Californians have been fully vaccinated, there are still 30% – or about 12 million people – who haven’t been vaccinated. The California Department of Health says people who are not vaccinated are seven times more likely to be infected, almost 13 times more likely to be hospitalized, and almost 16 times more likely to die from the coronavirus.

Coronavirus-related hospital admissions in California rose slowly, up 15% in the past 11 days to 3,852. That’s less than half what it was during the late summer peak and a fifth of a year ago before vaccines were widely available.

But while hospitals have fewer patients overall than last winter, many have fewer staff treating their patients. The staff shortage comes from the fact that companies have difficulty finding workers, including hospitals.

A recent study by the University of California-San Francisco estimates that the state’s nursing staff shortage could persist through 2026.

WASHINGTON (CBS News) – Federal health officials said Wednesday that vaccinated Americans must receive a booster dose eight months after receiving their second dose of a COVID-19 vaccine to maximize protection from the virus and extend its shelf life.

The country’s foremost health and medical experts from the Ministry of Health and Welfare announced in a joint statement that the Biden government is ready to launch Moderna boosters in the week of 20 two-shot vaccines.

Americans who were the first to get vaccinated against COVID-19 – health care providers, nursing home residents and the elderly – will likely be eligible for a booster by the end of next month, public health officials said. The Biden administration will also make efforts to provide boosters directly to residents of long-term care facilities.

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) – San Francisco will provide an additional dose of the COVID-19 vaccine for people who have received the Johnson & Johnson single-shot variety, but public health officials are not calling it a booster, authorities said on Tuesday with.

In what may be a unique decision in California, the Department of Health said people who request it can get an extra dose at city clinics. The second shot will be a vaccine made by either Pfizer-BioNTech or Moderna.

Both companies offer vaccines that require two doses.

Although the Johnson & Johnson vaccine is effective in preventing serious infections, “We have received inquiries based on discussions with patients with their doctors, and so we are allowing placement,” said Naveena Bobba, the department’s assistant health director.

The various vaccines and whether they are effective against the Delta variant of the virus have caused confusion, causing a worrying surge in COVID-19 cases and hospitalizations in California and other states.

“Potential benefit, not a disadvantage. It makes sense to me as we look at the future of this virus and we are facing a fourth surge now, ”said Dr. Chris Colwell, chief of emergency medicine at Zuckerberg San Francisco General, according to KGO-TV.

State health officials reported more than 7,300 new cases of the coronavirus on Tuesday and 6.7% of tests were positive over a seven-day period, a sharp increase from just a few weeks ago, albeit still far lower than during an autumn and winter surge .

Local and state health officials say the boom is being driven by the unvaccinated.

Vaccines reduce the severity of the disease, reduce hospital stays, and lower the risk of death. Clinical studies showed that a single dose of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine was 72% effective against moderate to severe COVID-19 in the United States, compared to 95% for the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines.

Last month, Johnson & Johnson said its vaccine provides at least eight months of immunity to COVID-19 and “produces strong, sustained activity” against the Delta variant.

Public health officials described the vaccination as a supplement rather than a booster.

“It’s not a booster because it’s not specific to some of the flavors that the booster will ultimately be,” Colwell said.

“This step does not represent a change in policy,” said a statement from the Ministry of Health. “We are still following the guidelines of the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and currently do not recommend a booster vaccination.”

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) – San Francisco police will stop publishing mug shots of arrested persons unless they pose a threat to the public to stop the perpetuation of racist stereotypes, the city police chief said Wednesday.

San Francisco Police Chief Bill Scott and outside law enforcement experts said they believe the department would be the first in the nation to do so due to concerns about racial prejudice.

The accounting photos taken by the police when a person is arrested for a crime are often made public, regardless of whether the person is being prosecuted for the alleged crime or not. That can undermine the presumption of innocence and help maintain stereotypes, experts said.

“This is just a small step, but we hope others will consider it too,” said Scott.

Big cities like Los Angeles and New York already have policies against posting posting photos, but make exceptions. For example, the New York City Police Department, the largest in the country, publishes information about arrests but does not issue mug shots unless investigators believe it will cause more witnesses to come forward or to help find a suspect help. Georgia and New York have stopped posting posting photos to restrict websites asking people to remove their pictures and posting information.

Jack Glaser, a public policy professor at the University of California at Berkeley who studies racial stereotypes and whose work has consulted with Scott, said data shows that arrested blacks are more likely to have their cases turned down by prosecutors.

“This is possibly just part of the same problem where the police will stop and search the blacks at a lower suspicion threshold, and therefore their arrests are more likely to be unfounded,” Glaser said.

But the mug shots live on.

Numerous websites will post the mug shots regardless of whether someone has been convicted of a crime, and then charge a fee to those who want their photo removed. The phenomenon prompted the California attorney general to charge one of the largest operators with extortion, money laundering and identity theft.

Scott said this is helping Americans create an unfair association between people of color and criminal. The adoption of the new policy is part of an effort to stop the spread of negative minority stereotypes, which Scott, the black, experienced when he was out of uniform.

“You go into a department store and are followed and the security service looks at you suspiciously. I’ve seen that, ”said Scott.

In San Francisco, the only exceptions will be when a crime suspect poses a threat or when officials need help locating a suspect or person at risk, Scott said. According to the policy, the publication of photos or information about a person who has been arrested must also be approved by the Police Department’s PR team.

Eugene O’Donnell, a former NYPD officer and professor at the John Jay College of Criminal Justice, said not every department cracking down on the publication of mug shots gives a reason. The San Francisco Police Department is the first he knows is implementing policies to stop racial prejudice, he said.

He said preventing mug shots of suspects from being published on television shows and elsewhere should be part of a major judicial reform in the country.

“For a democratic society we are very unconcerned about human rights and the presumption of innocence,” said O’Donnell. “We are stealing freedom from people and ruining people’s reputations before anyone has ever made a decision about whether or not the person committed the crime.”

Nina Salarno, president of the Crime Victims United of California advocacy group, praised Scott’s efforts to address racial prejudice but expressed concern about how the department will decide which photos to publish. She said posting posting photos can help crime victims come forward.

“The only concern for the victims side is how they categorize and who decides which ones to release to the public.” Asked Salarno.

SOUTH SAN FRANCISCO (CBS SF) – Police are investigating after multiple shots were fired at a house in South San Francisco early Monday morning.

Just after 1 a.m., officials were called to the Serena Court area after gunfire was reported. After an extensive search, no suspects or evidence were found.

At around 2 a.m., police received a call from a local resident who was returning to his home on 200 block on Verano Drive, not far from where the officers were called earlier that night. The resident said he found several bullet holes in his home and on the windows.

He had no information about a suspect and didn’t know why someone would shoot into his home, police said.

There are no immediate reports of injuries.
