WALMART is shutting 21 stores nationwide this year, including four in Chicago, due to poor financial results at each site.

The most recent store closings continue a pattern in which Walmart shuts down a number of locations in various states each year, claiming that the locations are “underperforming” but not giving any further details.

Most recently, the chain has announced closures in 12 states, including Arkansas, Washington DC, Georgia, Florida, Hawaii, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Minnesota, New Mexico, Oregon, Texas, Washington State, and Wisconsin.

A spokeswoman cited store performance as one of the reasons for the closure.

The business said that four of its eight Chicago locations will be shutting down in April and claimed that these locations “lose tens of millions of dollars a year.”

The chain’s store closures come after Walmart CEO Doug McMillion issued a warning to shoppers.

“Theft is an issue. It’s higher than what it has historically been,” McMillon told CNBC in December. If this issue isn’t addressed, “prices will be higher, and/or stores will close,” McMillon warned.

Follow our store closures blog for news and updates…

More on CVS closures

The Mobile, Alabama, store joins a growing list of CVS locations permanently shuttering.

The chain closed three locations in March and two more in April.

“It’s stressful for a lot of patients. The thought of switching pharmacies can be very daunting, especially when you have patients that have a lot of medication,” Sarah Walton, the company’s director of pharmacy operations, told WNYT as the company announced a closure in New York earlier this year.

“But we’ve done our best with estimating the number of patients that we think we can be getting with this closing.”

The company revealed plans in January to shutter 300 stores per year – the goal was to close 900 locations by 2026.

There are more than 9,600 CVS locations nationwide.

Pharmacy set to shut down

Customers in Mobile, Alabama, are preparing to lose a CVS location.

In a statement to 15 News, the local NBC affiliate, the company said it is working to help customers find new locations to fill their prescriptions.

“All prescriptions will be transferred to the nearby CVS Pharmacy at 4645 Airport Boulevard to ensure that patients continue to have uninterrupted access to the pharmacy care, programs and services they currently receive from CVS,” the company said.

“Patients can always choose to fill their prescriptions at any CVS Pharmacy, or the pharmacy of their choice, if another is more convenient.”

CVS didn’t specify why the store was closing but pointed to multiple factors leading to closures.

Retailer closes after a six-month run

Furniture retailer Coco Republic opened its doors in San Francisco’s Union Square with high hopes in the fall of 2022.

But now the chain is saying goodbye to its new shoppers, announcing the store will be completely shut down by the end of July — or whenever its inventory is completely sold out.

The closure is just one of many as downtown San Francisco continues to fare poorly in its ability to retain retailers over the past several months.

As crime picked up in the area, other stores such as Nordstrom, Whole Foods, and Office Depot also announced their departure from the area, partly attributed to high theft and crime as well as low foot traffic.

“It was a difficult decision and one that was not taken lightly,” a company spokesperson told SFGate.

7/11 rival closes its doors

Health Beat Natural Foods, which rivals convenience store chan 7-Eleven, is shutting down in Johnson City, New York.

This is because the owner of the store, Michele Moelder, is retiring.

She said in a Facebook post: “Thank you so much for 40 years of support! I’m onto the next chapter of life!”

“My goal when I opened was to educate and help people enjoy a healthier life by providing healthier food – vitamins and guidance! Continue on – please keep in touch!”

‘Retail apocalypse’

A variety of brick-and-mortar stores have struggled in recent years due to the rise of online sales.

This has been a leading cause of store closures in general.

Some have dubbed this trend as the retail apocalypse.

In particular, it has affected many stores that have a big presence in the malls including Macy’s, which has announced plans to close more than 100 locations by the end of this year.

And Foot Locker announced it would be shutting down 400 “underperforming” locations, all of which are mall-based stores

Dollar General rival closes

Dollar Tree at 1099 Route 46 in the Troy-Hills shopping center in New Jersey has closed.

A picture of a sign taken by local news outlet Parsippany Focus read: “This location has been permanently closed. Thank you to our customers.”

Another photo on the store that suddenly closed shows that the sign and facade have been removed.

The exact reason for and when exactly it closed is unclear.

But Dollar Tree is encouraging customers to shop at other local stores including one at 1440 US-46 in Parsippany and another at 461 US-46 in Fairfield.

Other retailers leaving San Francisco

Williams-Sonoma joins a long list of companies vacating their San Francisco dwellings.

Coco Republic, Nordstrom, and Whole Foods Market all announced their departure from the California city.

None of the companies have pointed directly to a rise in theft as the main cause of their departure.

Workers and police data suggests that theft has been a big reason for the exits.

“We invested extraordinary time and capital in our initial US flagship store in Union Square,” Coco Republic’s creative director and founder, Anthony Spon-Smith, said in a statement.

“But, ultimately, the safety and well-being of our customers and employees is our highest priority.”

Iconic kitchenware store shuts down

The popular kitchenware store Williams-Sonoma has been the only location in downtown San Francisco.

The company, well known for its gourmet-quality cookware, is closing after 30 years in the bay area city.

The four-floor, nearly 20,000-square-foot location, has been a Williams-Sonoma since 1993.

The store’s top floor featured a full-working kitchen.

Williams-Sonoma contracted professional chefs to teach cooking classes in the custom kitchen.

According to The San Francisco Standard, employees at the kitchenware brand said the location is expected to turn into a Chanel store.

Hooters rival closes doors for good

The Buffalo Wild Wings bar in northeast Columbia abruptly closed its doors just one week after announcing several other closures.

Last week a spokesperson for the chicken wing chain told CTV News Toronto that the “difficult decision” was made to close “a few” of its locations in Ontario.

The spokesperson did not specify the reasoning behind the closures, but said it “routinely evaluates locations to serve out guests best.”

Those that were axed included bars in Oakville, London, Ajax, Stoney Creek, and Vaughan.

Retailers who filed for bankruptcy: JCPenney

The popular department store declared bankruptcy in May 2020 and announced it would close over 800 stores.

Unfortunately, the company had acquired $4.5billion in net losses since 2010.

Only 670 JCPenney locations exist today, and more stores are slated to close this spring, including those in Oswego, New York, and Elkhart, Indiana.

Simon Property Group and Brookfield Property Group have agreed to acquire the chain for $1.75billion.

Retailers who filed for bankruptcy: Party City

Party supply store Party City may have flourished pre-pandemic, but the coronavirus outbreak put a hit on both in-person events and the store’s financial performance.

Since filing for bankruptcy, the store has placed 12 locations up for auction so far.

Under a $150 bankruptcy loan, the chain said it will continue operating while restructuring its debt load.

In September 2022, Party City held $1.7billion in debt but was working to achieve a smaller and more successful fleet of stores.

Burger King closures: Michigan

EYM King of Michigan stated in a WARN notice it would also be closing 26 Burger King restaurants in Michigan in April.

Burger King dealing with massive closures this year

Joshua Kobza of Restaurant Brands International, Burger King’s parent company, said that mass closures are being planned to protect the brand from further damage.

The fast-food giant surprised analysts with a 12.3 percent increase in global same-store sales in the first quarter of the year and an 8.7 percent increase in same-store sales in the U.S. after launching a $400million “Reclaim the Flame” campaign.

However, RBI chairman Patrick Doyle said that stores unable to meet sales goals will be asked to shut down in the coming months.

Additional Starbucks closures

This year, in total, Starbucks has permanently closed three locations in DuPage, Illinois, Detroit, Michigan, and Fresno, California.

Meanwhile, Starbucks has targeted other union stores too.

This includes another in Ithaca on College Avenue, which shuttered in June 2022.

Additionally, Starbucks shut down a union store in Boston’s Cleveland Circle. Massachusetts.

The company said it would close in March temporarily due to “plumbing issues.

Starbucks to close locations next week

The coffee chain is planning to close its remaining locations in Ithaca, New York on Friday, May 26.

The stores affected are on East Seneca Street and South Meadow Street.

While Starbucks has denied this was the case for the closure, these locations all voted to unionize.

The company told The U.S. Sun that it is a part of the closures are a part of its so-called Reinvention Plan, which involves transforming its store portfolio.

“We’ve gone to extraordinary efforts to staff, hire and support these stores so that our partners and customers are able to have the Starbucks experience they deserve,” Starbucks said.

Nike rival closes down after more than 40 years of business

SMS Sportsworld, which has been located in South Carolina’s Orangeburg Mall Circle for more than 40 years, plans to shutter forever following the sale of all of its merchandise.

The men who founded the sports equipment retailer 41 years ago, Dick Sheridan, Melicue Metts, and Richard Salley named it SMS after their own last names, The Times and Democrat reported.

Bobby Sheridan, Dick Sheridan’s son, is handling the store’s closeout as both Metts and Salley got out of the business over a decade ago, leaving Sheridan as the sole owner.

“My father, Mr. Metts, and Mr. Salley thank you for half a century of shopping here,” Bobby said.

He added: “We wish we could have stayed longer but it is time to go.”

Target closes struggling stores

Target announced it would be closing down four stores that couldn’t keep up with the chain’s financial expectations.

The areas affected include:

Bed Bath & Beyond closing its doors for good

Company leaders at Bed Bath & Beyond also announced the home goods giant is closing all 360 stores after filing for bankruptcy in April.

In addition, all the company’s 120 buybuyBABY locations will be going under as well.

Up to 30,000 jobs could be lost due to the store closures.

Tuesday Morning having struggles

With consumer spending being cramped by high inflation, many other brick-and-mortar shops are feeling the pressure.

Home goods store Tuesday Morning filed for bankruptcy in February and shortly after announced the closure of half of its retail locations.

At least 860 stores have reported their upcoming closures in 2023.

Stores in states including but not limited to California, Florida, Georgia, Maryland, Nevada, and Nebraska will be shuttering this year.

Best Buy cuts down on employees

After closing multiple locations, Best Buy has also released thousands of employees.

Overall, Best Buy cut down its employee base in the US and Canada from 125,000 in early 2020 to just 90,000 at the start of the year.

Best Buy is leaning into its digital growth as e-commerce sales now make up 33 percent of its revenue in the United States, up from just 19 percent three years ago.

Best Buy closings revealed

Best Buy has decided to close multiple stores in different locations after the company predicted overall sales to fall this year during its prior earnings call.

Is it still cool to grab a cup of coffee and a croissant and hang out at a coffee shop? Not cool as in stylish, but cool as in socially acceptable or appropriate. It’s a question that confuses remote workers in San Francisco looking for locations for WFH away from, ahem, home, and it’s driving a wedge between potential customers and coffee shop owners and employees. As the Bay Area continues to emerge from under the long shadow of COVID, the way you simply exist in a coffee shop seems to have gotten lost in the crowds — though the overall message from Bay Area coffee shops is pretty clear: get it Grab your coffee and get the hell out.

Across the Bay Area, businesses seem to be trying anything and everything to get customers moving on. Starbucks got the chairs and tables from its “Bearbucks” location on 18th Street in Castro, a move that SFGATE reports said was roundly tapped by local employees and customers. The Duboce Triangle location at Café Reveille was recently roasted for being so overrun with remote workers it felt like zombieland. Meanwhile, specialty coffee pioneer and Bay Area-based Peet’s is opening its first takeout-only store in San Francisco’s Civic Center neighborhood.

The warmed-up Peet’s store will be the same size and style as its signature cafes, but without indoor seating. Eric Lauterbach, CEO of Peet’s, a San Francisco native, says he’s never seen downtown so empty, and as a company, Peet’s has to respond to these ebbs and flows. While residential and convenience stores remain the same, the Montgomery to-go location offers downtown coffee drinkers what they’re looking for these days: a place to grab a quick drink on their infrequent trips to the office. “After the pandemic, people use coffee shops differently,” says Lauterbach. “I’ve been at Peet’s for 13 years and I used to be told the chairs weren’t comfortable enough because people wanted to stay for a while. Now our mobile transactions are over 20 percent.”

The reasons for all the energy going to the right are as varied as the negative impact of the pandemic, although most – including Lauterbach – believe COVID has accelerated these changes already in the works. In San Francisco, the service industry workforce shrank 55 percent from 2019 to 2021, meaning there are fewer people making that morning coffee. City of San Francisco economist Ted Egan noted that the city ranks 24th out of the 25 major metropolitan areas in terms of recovery from COVID, and that lag is certainly being felt in the restaurant and service industries.

But not only in San Francisco: According to the international coffee magazine Standart, the rules for café culture are changing worldwide. First the obvious: Sales of homebrew equipment and bagged beans soared during the pandemic, when no one was going anywhere. That need bred adoration, and many coffee fans stayed in that DIY camp — see: the 2020 Dalgona coffee trend. Additionally, Lauterbach says even consumers who come into the office could now come later — say, 9 a.m., long after they have done the first cup at home.

So where are the rules of café culture these days? In short, buy a little more than you think and maybe more than you’d like. Don’t assume that WiFi or table space will be provided or available. Standart writes that a 60-minute rule is accepted almost universally, especially in a money-savvy city like San Francisco, where it’s important for old-established and new cafes alike to keep up with a high volume of orders. Respect baristas and of course treat them like people, followed by respect for the space itself. It’s not your home office, and if there’s no outlet don’t be offended; Bring a portable battery or hotspot.

“People use coffeeshops differently after the pandemic”

Lauterbach points out that the original Peet’s allowed customers to get the code for the WiFi, which turned off after 45 minutes. And although the Montgomery store has a few tables outside, the to-go approach eliminates all of those concerns for the company. “We have to understand the trends and needs of the future,” says Lauterbach. “Peet has been too rigid in the past, and now we’re adapting on the fly.”

A longtime barista, who preferred to remain anonymous rather than risk losing tips, said the rule in his mind is to buy an item or coffee every two hours. “If they can afford it,” said the barista. “If it’s super crowded or someone asks you to leave, that’s different.”

However, Joshua James Kaplowitz, a veteran Bay Area barista and founder of pop-up Better Half Coffee, is reluctant to believe that Bay Area cafe culture instills Sonic the Hedgehog vibes. He says it’s more about convenience than conversation, the energy many love about cafe culture. “Consumers will gravitate toward what brought them to stores in the first place,” says James Kaplowitz. He may be right. And if not, there’s always the library.

Andrew calmed me down and made the whole process of choosing and ordering a bespoke suit for my wedding very easy. He presented the prices transparently on the first visit where I made choices about every aspect of the suit and my shirts. Then there was a visit to try on a test suit made from recycled fabric, followed by a final appointment with the final try-on. “- Scott McCormick

Stephanie Ernst Scott would be the first to admit that she has never fished a day in her life – a unique position as the owner of a 62 year old tackle shop.

After 45 years at Gus’ Discount Tackle, an Outer Richmond fishing business, Ernst Scott said that her week off day is better spent playing with her grandchildren. In addition, Ernst Scott admitted that she hardly has the patience to fish anyway.

“I could never sit there,” said Ernst Scott, “you have to have the ability to sit, not my strength.”

Framed by over a thousand photos of customers and their fish, Ernst Scott sat smiling behind the counter of her tackle shop and waited restlessly for her next customer to come in. It was a slow, cold morning in a city where fog was often dictating the public’s retail habits.

The photos that adorn the walls and ceiling, some new, others faded and curled up from years in the sun, depict generations of anglers in San Francisco. The smiling customers who pose with their fish in these snapshots are doctors, teachers, hairdressers, and lawyers. Ernst Scott pointed out not one, but two photos of customers in full wedding regalia in the store. One was new – both the husband and wife wore masks.

The store, a mecca for fishermen in San Francisco, is a place where, according to Ernst Scott, customers can talk about anything – from fishing to family. And while Ernst Scott may not have an affinity for the sport itself, she stays because of the fulfillment she supposedly gets from the job.

“Goods are goods, but this is just a great place that has a very emotional bond with a lot of our customers,” said Ernst Scott.

The general store became a tackle shop

Ernst Scott inherited the shop from her father, Gus Ernst, an Austrian Jew who she said fled the Nazis on skis during the Holocaust before settling in San Francisco.

“He was driving across the Alps while the Gestapo was shooting at him,” said Ernst Scott. “He saved his life and knew how to ski.”

Like father and daughter, Ernst did not fish either. The store first appeared as a general store on Clement Street in 1959 before moving to its current location – a former upholstery factory – on Balboa Street in 1961. Ask Ernst Scott and she will point out the pipes that run across one of the walls and the spot in the background she suspects must have once housed a kettle.

“This store sold everything but hot stoves and pets,” she said of her father’s early days.

It wasn’t until Ernst began receiving more requests from his regulars for more fishing gear that the business became more specialized. It started slowly, said Scott. Ernst would be asked one day to bring more rods. The next would be lines or hooks. In order to meet the demands of its customers, Ernst’s general store eventually became Gus’ Discount Tackle.

Behind the register, Scott spends most of her day. From here, she can see the news, speak to customers, and control the store. (Avery Wilcox / Golden Gate Xpress)

Criminals to lawyers

Ernst Scott never thought she would run her father’s fishing business.

Ernst Scott was unemployed in 1974 and had a masters degree in communications from SF State which felt increasingly useless. He felt stuck. Her father hired her as an employee out of kindness, she said.

“Really useful in this world,” said Ernst Scott sarcastically of her degree, gesturing around the shop. “Teaching is the only application, there were no jobs.”

Forty-five years later, she said she couldn’t imagine doing anything else.

While waiting for her first customers of the day, she joked that the people who come through the store are usually a lot more interesting.

“I’m sorry there can’t be more wackos for your story,” she said. “I have the best customers, 10 hours a day I have to deal with the most beautiful soup and nut customers in the world. They share their lives with you, come in for a coffee, it’s like an old general store. ”

Ernst Scott sums up her client base simply: she brings everyone from offenders to the lawyers they represent. She said that over the decades she has worked there, she has seen generations of customers attend to their discount needs.

One such customer is Chris Leong, a hairdresser whose father first brought her to the store about 30 years ago. She had stopped by Gus to drop off a gift certificate for Ernst Scott’s daughter from her salon (both she and her daughter have their hair cut by Leong) and they were about to show each other family photos. Leong was back at the store with her friend Karen Fong for the first time since the pandemic.

Leong said she hasn’t seen any major changes in Gus since childhood.

“She kept it where you can dig out of boxes,” she said.

“Is Chris telling you I’m a slut?” Ernst Scott said and cut him across the room.

“

It’s a family business. It’s not a franchise, it’s not a chain – it’s personable. “

– Chris Leong

Both women laughed before Ernst Scott took her on an impromptu tour of the store and showed her the old signage that was neatly hidden in the rafters. Leong said Ernst Scott was one of the main reasons she kept coming back after all these years.

“It’s a family business. It’s not a franchise, it’s not a chain – it’s personable, ”said Leong.

“Also for her personality,” said Fong, a non-fisherman, who said she would like to accompany Leong when she visits the store.

At the other end of the store, Chris Titus and his son Gage were rummaging through the store’s goods. Both were in town for the day from Sacramento and were drawn to the huge mural covering the shop front, showing a fisherman throwing his line over the door. Titus and his son, both fishermen, suspected that they had come across like-minded people.

“I like these little mom and pop shops,” said Titus. “I’d rather go somewhere like here than go to a big store like Bass Pro Shops.”

1,500 photos and counting

In the 10 years before his death, Ernst Scott worked with her husband Bill Scott on Gus’ Discount Tackle, where he primarily ran all books, handled advertising and managed the store’s website.

He and Ernst Scott met while studying at SF State and, like Ernst Scott, struggled to find work after completing his Masters in English.

Before helping Ernst Scott in the tackle shop, he served as the director of management information systems at See’s Candy Company and as a skylight designer.

One of his most important tasks, according to Ernst Scott, was a simple one – printing out customer photos and putting them on the wall. Before his death, Gus’s patrons could email their photos directly to the store to print and hang on the wall or ceiling, often the next day.

Nowadays, customers can still have their picture hung, all they have to do is bring the photo themselves. Unlike her late husband, Ernst Scott is admittedly not tech savvy. Not even a computer is in the store right now.

“I miss my husband for a lot of reasons,” she said, pointing to the photo wall.

When businesses around the world began to close at the beginning of the pandemic, things looked uncertain for the 62-year-old fishery. However, they were identified as an essential business and were allowed to remain open. Ernst Scott thought back to the beginning of the lockdown and said she didn’t know what it would have done if it had to close.

“My husband died a month before Covid started. This and my family saved me spiritually,” she said. “I would have gone mad as a hatter, we were together for 50 years, so you won’t get over it anytime soon.”

A changing neighborhood

Kevin Lorne, a 65-year-old construction manager from West Marin, said he has been coming back to Gus for the past 20 years. Over the past two decades, he said he noticed the neighborhood was getting fancier, but for him Gus’ hasn’t changed a bit.

“It’s small and has excellent service all the time,” Lorne said, indicating Ernst Scott. “And the prices are good.”

“

I will stay here as long as I want. I love it.”

– Ernst Scott

With COVID-19, Ernst Scott said many stores were closed in her beloved Richmond District. Despite the changing neighborhood, she said she will always call the Outer Richmond her home.

“I love to live here,” said Ernst Scott, “they will [have to] carry me out with your feet first. “

Regarding retirement, she said she has no intention of quitting anytime soon. Her daughter is a teacher, her son a cook, and only leaves her small grandchildren, or “geniuses” as she likes to call them, to take over the family business.

“I’ll stay here as long as I want,” said Ernst Scott. “I love it.”

Jason was our instructor. Kind guy and taught me a lot! I really appreciated the way he walked up and down the class to match people’s skills. We’ve covered enough that I could make a bowl and pot for my plants, and lots of great techniques to use in the future. Engaging evening. Highly recommended. “- Andrew Grossman

“I loved it so much that I became a member. The 12 pack is the same price as the 6 week course. You can just choose the days you want to come. I printed out photos and showed off my Pinterest board, and Mel brought my pieces to life. She is so fun to work with and learn from that I can’t imagine going anywhere for my weekly therapy sessions. ”- Elizabeth So.

“Sam, the chief pharmacist, goes way beyond my monthly medication schedule to make sure they’re in stock. Also is very informative and polite (most pharmacists don’t care as much as Sam). All the staff are very helpful to me in picking up my prescriptions from a great pharmacy in the Davies Center Walgreens. “- J. Zig
