Lyft has creative control over that iconic van that sits on top of a pole next to the U.S. 101 freeway in San Francisco.

“Notice a little more pink during your drive on the 101? The newly-painted Lyft van is just one of the ways we made ourselves at home,” Lyft wrote on a blog post that has since been deleted.

Lyft has confirmed to TechCrunch that the company leased the historic building, which is just under 7,000 square feet, for its new hub for San Francisco Bay Area drivers. Lyft said the company deleted the post because it was meant to go out tomorrow. Oh well.

Last May, the fate of the van was in question when a Curbed SF reader spotted a “For Rent” sign on a stick near the van. At the time, the owners said they still wanted to keep the advertising and the van. But now that Lyft has its hands on the space, the van that once read “Bell Plumbing” is now bright pink. 

Located at 2300 26th Street in San Francisco, the hub is Lyft’s first dedicated space in California where drivers can hang out with each other, rest their feet and take bathroom breaks. In the next few weeks, the hub will also offer educational sessions and driver recognition events. Check out other pictures of the hub below.

The Cliff House closed its doors in 2020, leaving many Bay Area residents wondering what would happen to the iconic restaurant and space. After several years of uncertainty, the National Parks Service announced that a 20-year lease was awarded to Sutro Lands End Partners LLC. The space is expected to open sometime in 2024, and details about the new restaurant have yet to be released.

The Cliff House closed in 2020, citing the pandemic and the federal government stalling their lease. The closure followed another iconic restaurant in the area, Louis’, announcing it was closing its doors.

Cliff House history

Perched on the rugged cliffs at Lands End, the Cliff House has a long history in San Francisco, and the current building is actually the 3rd iteration of the structure. The first structure was built in 1863 as a small, one-story structure atop the cliffs. Traveling to the resort was difficult and would take hours, making it only accessible to wealthy visitors. Guests of the first Cliff House included SF’s wealthiest families and even several presidents.

Despite its initial prestige, the resort declined in popularity over the years until legendary SF businessman Adolph Sutro bought the property in 1881, only for it to burn down several years later in 1894. Sutro wasted no time constructing a new, grander resort. By 1896, a new Victorian version was open to the public.

The massive 8-story building looked like a castle nestled on the cliffs. The resort had dining rooms, bars, dancing, art galleries, and more. Unfortunately, the beautiful building’s reign on the cliffs was short-lived, burning down in 1907.

In 1909, a third and final Cliff House was built, this time in concrete, by Emma Sutro Merritt. The building is still standing today with the same neoclassical design.

At the same time other retailers decamp from San Francisco, Whole Foods Market plans to open a new location.

Acadia Realty Trust expects to help open a controversial location for the grocery chain in San Francisco’s Western Addition in two years.

The New York area-based real estate investment trust plans to lease space to the upscale market at its City Center shopping plaza at 2675 Geary Boulevard in Anza Vista, the San Francisco Chronicle reported, citing a second-quarter earnings call.

Kenneth Bernstein, CEO at Acadia, said he expected the grocery store’s opening to be “a ’25 event.” 

The city’s Planning Commission is expected to approve the Whole Foods site as soon as this fall after an inquiry requested by the Board of Supervisors found the store’s impact on air quality would be “less than significant,” according to the newspaper.

The Whole Foods opening represents a bit of good news for the San Francisco retail industry, which has shrunk with the exit of a number of brand names. AT&T, Nordstrom, Old Navy, H&M and Crate & Barrel are among the retailers that have closed locations.

Store opponents had prevented its opening at Geary Boulevard and Masonic Avenue for three years, citing environmental, noise and traffic concerns. Numerous unions also opposed the Whole Foods, saying its nonunion workforce would lead to lower-paying jobs. 

After the Planning Commission exempted the redevelopment of the former Sears store site from an environmental study, the Board of Supervisors voted in 2020 to require one anyway.

Other local residents complained the review process had hindered the neighborhood’s ability to draw jobs during the pandemic. 

The Whole Foods Market would add grocery options in a neighborhood next to the Richmond District near well-heeled Pacific Heights, Presidio Heights and Laurel Heights. For decades, the shopping center not far from Target and Trader Joe’s was home to the largest Sears in Northern California.

The Anza Vista store would be the seventh market for Whole Foods in San Francisco. 

In April, Austin-based Whole Foods Market pulled the plug on its largest grocery store in the city at 1177 Market Street. After 12 months, the grocery chain owned by Seattle-based Amazon.com closed the Mid-Market location, citing deteriorating street condition and safety concerns for its employees.

For decades, one of the most splendid Christmas celebrations in San Francisco took place at a grand Queen Anne Victorian on Franklin Street.

Preparations for the holiday extravaganza started months before Dec. 25. Every year, the mansion’s basement would be transformed into a magical wonderland, evoking an exotic theme. As family and friends sipped cocktails upstairs, a Santa descended the stairs, ho-ho-ho’ing as he greeted and handed out favors to dozens of children.

Under a huge, glittering Christmas tree was a mountain of beautifully wrapped presents, not to be touched until the last plate of caviar, oysters and the piece de resistance, a gleaming roast suckling pig, was devoured. It was the great event of the year in the house, eagerly anticipated by young and old alike.

There was one noteworthy thing about this Christmas celebration. It was held by one of the most prominent Jewish families in San Francisco at their home, one of the city’s grand Victorians, the Haas-Lilienthal house.

Today, it may seem odd that a pillar of the Jewish community would stage an over-the-top celebration of Christmas (not to mention Easter, another big do at the mansion). But from the city’s birth until recently, such cultural crossovers were the norm, not the exception.

As Irena Narell wrote in her 1981 book, “Our City: The Jews of San Francisco,” “Christmas and New Year celebrations have remained a strong family tradition among descendants of San Francisco’s pioneer Jewry. To them, Christmas and membership in the major temples did not seem mutually exclusive.”

As noted in an earlier Portals, the city’s pioneer Jews were well-educated Germans. They were largely nonobservant to begin with, and San Francisco’s welcoming climate, as well as the tremendous business success they enjoyed, encouraged their secularism and their social assimilation. They were part of the San Francisco monied elite, and their standing in the establishment was much more important than any allegiance to Jewish religion or customs.

“For the majority of socially prominent San Francisco Jews, religious affiliation was primarily a matter of form,” Narell writes, quoting a descendant of one of those elite families, the Slosses, who said her father never set foot in a temple.

In “The Haas Sisters of Franklin Street: A Look Back With Love,” Frances Bransten Rothmann, granddaughter of Haas family patriarch William Haas, writes that her mother, Florine Haas Bransten, and her aunt, Alice Haas Lilienthal, “celebrated Christmas and Easter rather than Channukah and Pesach because these were the holidays of the culture they lived in.”

She adds, “The sisters knew little about Jewish rites. The menorahs, the beautiful lights adorning their Franklin Street homes, were merely artifacts ornamenting their dining and living rooms. We might dine on gorgeously glazed hams, but only fish was served on Fridays. As bacon sizzled in the kitchen, Mother worried endlessly about our Catholic nurse’s Lenten diet. These were not intentional or prejudicial defiances; they were merely a part of the world the sisters knew and lived in.”

Alice Haas Lilienthal, who was born in 1885, was in charge of the Christmas gala. A bighearted woman who thought the best of everyone and “lived her whole life as though it were still 1880,” according to a relative, she began preparing for the party months before, enlisting her daughters to help.

“Aunt Alice seemed to be Mrs. Santa Claus personified; her daughters, elfin helpers,” Rothmann writes.

Aunt Alice’s centerpiece was a glorious, ceiling-high Christmas tree. It rotated on a music stand and always featured remarkably symmetrical branches, heavily laden with heirloom ornaments, ropes of tinsel and hundreds of lights.

“The secret of those symmetrical branches became known to me in time,” Rothmann writes. “Aunt Alice had extra boughs cemented to the tree’s trunk, whenever it was not perfectly proportioned.”

The party was initially held upstairs in the parlors and dining room, but as the family grew to include 50 to 60 cousins, sisters, aunts and uncles, it was moved to the basement ballroom.

“These chilly, subterranean depths were transformed into other worlds. Each year there was a new stage setting, a new burst of imagination, and infinite attention to detail,” Rothmann writes.

One year, the basement ballroom was transformed onto a Mexican wonderland, complete with Santa Claus piñatas, sombreros, Indian baskets, paper poppies and papier-mache chickens and horses adorning the dining tables. Another time, the ballroom was decorated in opulent Oriental style, with chiming Siamese silver and gold wind-bells and brightly colored Japanese paper fans and butterflies. The tables were lit by lanterns from Hong Kong in the shape of odd animals, and several of the ladies wore kimonos that Lilienthal had brought back from Japan.

But Rothmann’s favorite Christmas decor was when her beloved aunt turned the old house into a winter wonderland. One year, Lilienthal made trees out of pine cones she had gathered the previous summer at Lake Tahoe, painted silver and covered with popcorn and ornaments threaded together.

The highlight was an alpine scene on the buffet table, featuring a gingerbread chateau built by the cook, surrounded by a miniature forest. An ice-skating pond was cleverly designed on a mirror, with tiny toboggans, paper snowballs, sleds and a Santa on the chateau chimney reflected in it.

This grand, cross-cultural Christmas tradition went on for more than 60 years. Lilienthal died in 1972 at age 87. The magnificent Haas-Lilienthal house at 2007 Franklin St. is now the home of San Francisco Heritage, an organization dedicated to preserving the city’s architectural legacy.

It recently received a $4.3 million restoration and is open to the public for tours.

A new Porsche dealership is set to open Monday in San Francisco’s SoMa neighborhood, and it’s already been vandalized. 

On Thursday afternoon, The Standard witnessed graffiti daubed across the store’s large windows as a window cleaner worked to clean them up. Other staff in dress clothes were working inside the store. 

Porsche confirmed the dealership will be open at 500 Eighth St. on the corner of Bryant Street from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday. A weekday-only service and parts departments will be open from 7:30 a.m.

The site was formerly home to a Mercedes Benz SmartCenter, according to a Google Maps listing and a sign above the store when The Standard visited Thursday.

“Our dealership is the place where passion and exclusivity come together to create a truly unique experience for all our clients,” a Porsche spokesperson said.

On May 24, Cole Hardware announced on it would shutter its SoMa store at at 345 Ninth St. just a few blocks away from the new luxury dealership. The company’s CFO blamed a declining customer base and concerns over security, after a 25% off closing-down sale.

In February, Samy’s Camera on the corner of Ninth and Bryant streets also closed its doors.  Ace Plumbing and Rooter Inc. now occupy Samy’s former location.

In a surprising act of loyalty amidst corporate exodus from San Francisco, Elon Musk announced on his X (Previously Twitter) account that he is not moving the headquarters of X, formerly known as Twitter, from the city, despite many companies offering rich incentives for a potential relocation. The billionaire entrepreneur, who encountered some significant hurdles in the past with the city’s government and regulations, stated, “San Francisco, beautiful San Francisco, though others forsake you, we will always be your friend.”

Many have offered rich incentives for X (fka Twitter) to move its HQ out of San Francisco.

Moreover, the city is in a doom spiral with one company after another left or leaving.

Therefore, they expect X will move too.

This announcement from Musk may come as a surprise considering his controversial past involving the city and other businesses he runs. Previously, NBC Bay Area reported that Musk hinted at potentially moving Twitter’s headquarters due to allegations of violating building codes and a dispute with the San Francisco Department of Building Inspection over alleged alterations to the headquarters. In 2021, Musk moved Tesla’s headquarters from California to Texas after disagreements with Alameda County health officials about reopening a factory amidst the coronavirus pandemic. Earlier this year, it was announced that the Tesla engineering HQ would return to California, per publications like Forbes.

San Francisco has seen a decline in business presence, with many companies leaving the city in recent years. However, SFist reported that Ted Egan, the city’s Chief Economist, believes doom loop talk has been overblown and the city’s economy has shown positive signs of recovery. Egan highlighted improving statistics in consumer spending, which is nearing pre-pandemic levels, and increased sales tax data for the first quarter of 2023, to support his argument for the city’s resilience in economic recovery.

Though the current scenario raises questions about Musk’s intentions, his commitment to keeping X in San Francisco has been met with mixed reactions. On one hand, supporters argue that retaining the headquarters could help boost the city’s economy, especially as the city experiences a slow recovery from the pandemic’s economic downturn. Contrarily, Musk’s seemingly inconsistent and, at times, controversial history with the city may still pose concerns for those who are unsure about his decision’s potential impacts and its implications. Considering the correlation between corporate presence and a city’s economic health, the outcome of this decision could significantly influence San Francisco’s future.

It’s one of those days in San Francisco when the sun is inviting, the wind occasionally bites, and the northeast corner of 24th and Mission is buzzing with activity.

The BART place itself is surprisingly spotless on a mid-June Wednesday, with just a few people relaxing, smoking cigarettes or chatting with friends. But on the sidewalk, separated from the plaza by several feet of metal grating along the Mission Street side, the sidewalk is constantly packed with vendors offering their wares, and dozens of people buying and selling goods.

Though it was only the second day they were erected, the fences seemed to be making a difference: The often debris-filled plaza was strikingly clean that Wednesday afternoon, and remained nearly two hours after orange-robed community ambassadors left the area, strikingly clean their raids on Mission Street.

The sidewalk, on the other hand, was crowded, and most of the dozen or so vendors along Mission Street appeared to be working without a permit.

In a way, then, despite the sales permit allowed since September 2022, public works and police patrols, and the addition of a new community ambassador team that visits the plaza daily, the sidewalk next to the plaza borders on chaos. There are many illegal sellers, drug use persists and many who want to use the space still say they don’t feel safe.

“We’re not all the same,” said Nardo, 32, in Spanish. He sold electric razors and two baseball caps north of the plaza near El Farolito, where many vendors gather without permits to avoid the various city officials now patrolling the area. “Some of us are respectful, some aren’t.”

Nardo, who is from Nicaragua, works as a cleaner at a hotel, but when he can’t get shifts he comes to the square to buy and resell whatever people bring that day.

“I know why it’s illegal,” he says. He doesn’t ask questions about where the products he resells come from. “But we want to earn a little more money for our rent, for our food.”

Aside from the few established vendors with permits, tables, and umbrellas, many vendors in the 24th and Mission don’t seem to care too much about what they’re selling.

Nearby, on a bench by the bus stop, a man is selling nuts, coffee, cigarettes and lighters on a tarpaulin. At the other end of the bench, a man lies curled up and passed out on the floor.

A few yards from Nardo, a woman leaning on a stroller is selling two boxes of Glad bags and two large packs of Peanut M&Ms, along with other miscellaneous items on a piece of cardboard while scrolling her phone. If you ask her to talk about what she’s doing here, she goes from friendly to hostile.

“People don’t trust; They think it could be something bad,” says Nardo. And he adds: “Some of them [them] are more aggressive, more violent.”

Often the crossing is a busy hub: people drop by, meet friends or browse the goods, which can vary greatly from day to day. The narrow sidewalk, clogged with vendors and other people, poses an obstacle for wheelchair users, seniors, and others with limited mobility.

On Wednesday, a curious woman comes by with a newborn in her arms and goes shopping. She had never been to this BART place before but accompanied her brother who came to the mission to give back at a store.

Narcan, stolen goods, confiscations

For many, however, the influx of people at 24th and Mission over the past year or two has been unsustainable.

Authorized sellers say it is impossible for them to compete with the prices of unauthorized sellers, some of whom appear to be selling stolen goods. Other vendors fear the possibility of violence or theft of their goods.

Then there is the drug use. “They drop dead like flies,” said Roscoe Campos, who said he walked across the square after work. “You’ll go deaf to it.”

Across the street from the square, just inside the city gates in front of McDonald’s, a man dozed off sitting on a suitcase next to a tarp with clothes spread out. Two Latina women yelled “sorry” loudly and repeatedly before he finally came to and completed the sale.

The police, who have been frequently stationed at the square in recent months, can’t or don’t do much, officials at the square said. “They’re standing 20 feet from someone who smokes fentanyl … and they’re just worried about who’s selling it to them,” Campos said.

This Friday, traders were observed ignoring the fences and selling their wares. They dispersed when two officers pulled up in a squad car and began sauntering across the square.

And on Wednesday, June 21, vendors returned to both the sidewalk and the square.

Jessica Haner, who has worked at a booth in the plaza for about 10 years and is giving away free cell phones and tablets as part of the California LifeLine Program, said her husband administers Narcan, an anti-overdose medication, on or near it two or three times a week Place.

And although she believes the situation is chaotic and out of control, Haner said she’s seen city workers at times make things worse for those just trying to make a living.

“They literally just come up to you, grab your stuff and throw it in a bag … My jaw dropped,” Haner said. “I mean, a lot of it’s stolen, but not all of it!”

Enrique Arreola, who sells everything from household cleaning products to toiletries on a large white table, said in Spanish that he’s also used to being on the defensive – he’s been robbed and the police aren’t helping him when the value of the… stolen item is reduced item is so low. He knows the risks of street vending, but prefers to make his living independently.

While Nardo believed the new gates clearing the space would help keep the area cleaner than usual, Arreola, who is fenced off on the crowded sidewalk at his intended retail location, said he feared being trapped in an emergency become.

His wife had already missed work that week, concerned for her safety following recent particularly violent events.

City presence temporarily

Javier Chavez, 52, who has been coming to the square after work to relax and people-watch for a month now, said he likes the new fences. He believes they give a semblance of control.

But it’s unclear if that’s actually the case. As evening approaches and the community ambassadors, BART crisis response specialists and police are all gone, the square quickly fills up again: young people hang around, people selling three bottles of wine here, five cans of spray deodorant there.

It is generally calm and respectful, but things can change in an instant.

As I speak to Nardo, a fight nearly breaks out in front of us as a man refuses to stay to his right as he drives past another man rolling a bike and trailer. He yells and pushes the man on the bike. The two men line up to fight, and others nearby start screaming. I examine my surroundings and wonder which direction to go if necessary.

The confrontation subsided, but not always.

“They’re constant: Up to six, eight, ten fights a day I think. That’s the case anytime, anytime,” Arreola said. “Sometimes there’s a fight, other times they pull out guns.”

A few meters away, a man leans against a bus stop on his scooter, carefully sharpening a large knife.

The only thing that could help Arreola is constant surveillance, which he knows is unsustainable.

Amin, the manager of the Mi Pueblito Market grocery store a few yards away, has someone constantly watching the produce on display. Still, he estimates they lose an average of $20 to $30 in product every day.

He points to a nearby man holding a half-eaten apple, standing by the store’s fruit display. “He didn’t pay for it,” Amin said. “And I’m not going to tell him, ‘Hey, you didn’t pay for the apples.'”

Amin said he’s not sure what the solution is because he sees that the moment city workers move out, people are flooding the vacated area.

“They have to do something better,” he says.
