KEXP expands to San Francisco: Seattle’s favorite nonprofit radio station is growing into California. KEXP announced via a donor email that it purchased San Francisco’s KREV 92.7 with a winning bid of $3.75 million as part of a bankruptcy auction. So long as the Federal Communications Commissions gives them the green light, KEXP will start operations in SF in the next few months. 

THING ditches Port Townsend: Seattle Theater Group’s eclectic arts fest, THING, will no longer take place in Port Townsend. After declining ticket sales in the event’s three-year run, STG determined Port Townsend was the problem. The town is difficult to get to and doesn’t have a ton of lodging for a slew of guests. It is damn pretty, though. Ah well, THING will live on, just somewhere else. STG has not said where, though. 

Good news for this dog: On Monday night, a fire swept through SODO’s dog daycare, Dog Resort. In the hubbub of trying not to die in the fire, Remi, a dog, went missing. Three days letter, Remi turned up after reportedly falling off a ramp near Lumen Field. She is now at a veterinarian’s office in critical condition. Remi’s owner is currently in Japan. The owner’s other dog, Georgie, turned up on I-5 after the fire.

Diddy sued for rape, sex trafficking: The signer Cassie filed a suit Thursday against Sean “Diddy” Combs, the rapper, hiphop mogul, and billionaire. Combs signed a then-19-year-old Cassie to his label in 2005. At the time, Combs was 37. Several years later, the two entered into a romantic relationship. However, according to Cassie, Combs “raped her in her home after she tried to leave him, ‘blew up’ another man’s car after learning of his romantic interest in the singer, and often beat and kicked her,” NBC News reports. She also alleged Combs forced her to engage in sex acts with other men while he filmed it. Cassie named Combs as well as Bad Boy Records, Bad Boy Entertainment, Epic Records, and Combs Enterprises as defendants.

UN stops delivering food to Gaza: After telephone and internet service in Gaza failed due to a lack of food, the United Nations said it was forced to stop delivering food and supplies. The UN warned of widespread starvation. Israel budged a tiny bit and said it would allow “‘very minimal’ daily shipments of fuel into Gaza for use by the UN and communications system,” according to the Associated Press. However, the UN said the amount Israel has greenlit will not be enough “to fuel water systems, hospitals, and trucks to deliver aid.”

Protesters block bridges: Over 200 protesters blocked the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge to urge President Joe Biden to call for a ceasefire in Gaza. Biden was in San Francisco for a global trade summit. Protestors blocked all lanes of the bridge’s upper deck with their cars. Some even threw their keys into the bay. Police arrested 80 people and had 29 cars towed. Bostonian ceasefire protesters also blocked some car infrastructure, stalling traffic across the bridge connecting Boston to Cambridge for two hours. 

Rep. George Santos faces expulsion—again: On Thursday, the House Ethics Committee found “substantial evidence” that Santos “used campaign funds for personal purposes, defrauded donors, and filed false or incomplete campaign finance and financial disclosures,” the New York Times reports. According to the report, Santos may have used that campaign money for personal Botox and to pay for OnlyFans subscriptions. Santos announced he would not be running for reelection. On Friday, Republican Rep. Michael Guest, chairman of the House Ethics Committee, filed a resolution seeking to expel Santos from Congress.

• Riders are reportedly using San Francisco’s self-driving taxis, operated by Cruise, to hook up.
• A 2018 study predicted that more autonomous vehicles could mean more sex on the road.
• The cars have cameras and microphones for safety, and Cruise prohibits “inappropriate behavior.”

With no one in the front seat driving, some people are using self-driving taxis for a little bit more than just transportation.

The San Francisco Standard spoke to four separate individuals in the city who said they have either fooled around or had sex in one of the robotaxis from autonomous vehicle company Cruise over the last few months.

Cruise and Waymo have been operating fully driverless vehicles in San Francisco since early 2022, and got the go-ahead last week from the city to further expand their services and offer fully driverless rides 24/7 going forward. Cruise operates about 300 vehicles at night and 100 during the day, the company revealed at a California Public Utilities Commission hearing, according to the Standard. Waymo has a fleet of 250 robotaxis in service, a spokesperson confirmed to Insider.

“It seems like I’m a trailblazer,” one passenger told the Standard. The publication granted him and all others named in the piece anonymity, but referred to him by the alias Alex. “It’s also fun to realize that this is like the first place you can do this in the country.” 

Alex told the Standard that he’s had sex in robotaxis three times. 

One of Alex’s partners in robotaxi sex, whom the Standard called Megan, said that her encounter with Alex was her first time ever riding in an autonomous vehicle.

“Was it the most comfortable? Was it the most ideal? Probably not,” Megan told the Standard. “But the fact that we were out and about in public, the whole taboo of it being kind of wrong made it more fun and exciting.” 

A 2018 study by Scott Cohen and Debbie Hopkins in the Annals of Tourism Research journal predicted that passengers might use robotaxis for sex.

“Hotels-by the hour are likely to be replaced by connected and autonomous vehicles (CAVs),” the researchers wrote. “This will have implications for urban tourism, as sex plays a central role in many tourism experiences. Such private CAVs may also be put to commercial use, as it is just a small leap to imagine Amsterdam’s Red Light District ‘on the move.”

When a porn video of a couple having sex in a moving Tesla on Autopilot surfaced in 2019, Tesla CEO Elon Musk seemed unsurprised, tweeting “Turns out there’s more ways to use Autopilot than we imagined. Shoulda seen it coming…”

Insider reported at the time — when access to self-driving cars wasn’t nearly as accessible to the public as it is now — that most autonomous cars would likely have security or surveillance in place through cameras or other monitoring, though the researchers point out in the study that surveillance could be “rapidly overcome, disabled, or removed.” In other words, people can get pretty creative in figuring out ways around these systems.

Both Cruise and Waymo do have cameras and microphones inside their self-driving vehicles as well as on the outside, which the companies say are used for safety and rider support. Cruise says on its website videos from its vehicles are used for customer support, safety reasons, vehicle maintenance, security, operations, or if legally required. Both companies say on their websites that microphones are only active during rider support calls. Cruise’s community rules also specify that passengers are required to wear a seatbelt.

Waymo declined Insider’s request for comment.

“When users sign up to use the Cruise platform, they agree to follow our Community Rules which explicitly condemn any illegal activity or inappropriate behavior while using our service,” Cruise told Insider in a statement.

Since having sex in a vehicle within public view would certainly constitute “inappropriate behavior,” it’s safe to say you’re definitely not allowed to have sex in a Cruise robotaxi. But if that isn’t stopping everyone, the company may find itself tasked with enforcing that rule a bit more often than it would like.

As autonomous vehicles become increasingly popular in San Francisco, some riders are wondering just how far they can push the vehicles’ limits — especially with no front-seat driver or chaperone to discourage them from questionable behavior… The Standard has spoken to four separate Cruise car riders who said they’ve had sex or hooked up in the driverless vehicles in San Francisco over recent months and have provided ride receipts. The Standard was unable to find a source who said they’d had sex in a Waymo…

The rules and regulations surrounding robotaxis are murky, largely because the industry is so new… Unfortunately for the debaucherous among us, robotaxi companies currently use pretty extensive camera surveillance inside and outside of their cars. “We record video inside of the car for added safety and support,” Cruise states on its website… When asked, both Cruise and Waymo sidestepped commenting directly on what is or isn’t allowed in their cars.

Kate Forbes deutete an, dass sie heute Opfer „illiberaler“ Angriffe auf ihre religiösen Ansichten wurde, als ihre Kampagne, Schottlands erste Ministerin zu werden, wegen ihrer harten sozialen Haltung am Rande der Katastrophe stand.

Die SNP befindet sich heute Abend in einer Kernschmelze, nachdem die Spitzenreiterin der Führung trotzig ihre frommen christlichen Ansichten zu Themen von der Homo-Ehe bis zur Geschlechtsidentität zur Schau gestellt hat.

Die schottische Finanzministerin, 32, bestand darauf, dass Sex vor der Ehe und uneheliche Kinder in einem außergewöhnlichen 24-Stunden-Gemetzel, das ihre Bewerbung um die Nachfolge von Nicola Sturgeon im Wasser liegen gelassen zu haben, „falsch“ sei.

Es kam, nachdem sie zuvor bestätigt hatte, dass sie die gleichgeschlechtliche Ehe in Kommentaren ablehnte, die LGBT-Schotten wütend machten.

Sie bestand darauf, dass sie nicht die Absicht habe, ihre Ansichten anderen „aufzuzwingen“, und dass es „illiberal“ sei, Menschen mit „ziemlich Mainstream“-religiösen Ansichten als „jenseits“ zu behandeln.

Aber Verbündete geben zu, dass Frau Forbes es „vermasselt“ hat, wobei SNP-Aktivisten als die sozial liberalsten gelten.

Frau Forbes, ein Mitglied der Free Church of Scotland, könnte sogar mit einer internen SNP-Disziplinaruntersuchung konfrontiert werden, nachdem sie ITV Border gesagt hat: „Ich glaube, dass eine Transfrau ein biologischer Mann ist, der sich als Frau identifiziert.“

Die MSP schien heute Nachmittag anzuerkennen, dass ihre Ambitionen vereitelt werden könnten, und sagte, ihre Kampagne werde „im Moment“ fortgesetzt.

Inmitten einer Reihe von Angriffen im Laufe des Tages forderte die SNP-Abgeordnete Joanna Cherry, die mit den religiösen Ansichten von Frau Forbes nicht einverstanden ist, hochrangige Persönlichkeiten auf, „die Hunde abzurufen“, und sagte, der „Fressrausch sei ungehörig und schlecht für die Partei“.

Das bröckelnde Führungsangebot lässt Gesundheitsministerin Humza Yousaf als Favoritin für die Übernahme von Frau Sturgeon zurück – hat aber auch die massive Kluft im Herzen der Partei hervorgehoben.

Frau Forbes sah bereits in Schwierigkeiten aus, nachdem sie über Nacht zugegeben hatte, dass sie gegen die Homo-Ehe gestimmt hätte.

Und heute Nachmittag sagte sie Sky News, dass es „etwas ist, das ich vermeiden würde“, außereheliche Kinder zu haben.

„In Bezug auf meinen Glauben würde mein Glaube sagen, dass Kinder – er sagt, dass Sex für die Ehe ist. Das ist der Ansatz, den ich praktizieren würde “, sagte sie.

Frau Forbes bestand darauf, dass es kein Thema sei, über das sie „aufgeregt“ sei, und schlug vor, dass sie „meine Ansichten anderen Menschen nicht aufzwingen“ würde, und sie „akzeptiere“ Familie und Freunde, die diese „Entscheidungen“ getroffen haben.

Aber auf die Frage, ob es falsch sei, außereheliche Kinder zu haben, antwortete sie: „Für mich wäre es nach meinem Glauben falsch.“

Frau Forbes sagte: „In einer liberalen Gesellschaft können Sie koexistieren und diese Debatten und Diskussionen führen“, sagte sie. „Ich denke, es hat eine faszinierende Frage im Herzen des schottischen politischen Diskurses ans Licht gebracht, nämlich: Was bedeutet Liberalismus?

„Sind wir so illiberal geworden, dass wir diese Diskussionen nicht führen können, oder sind einige Leute über den Rand gestolpert? Denn wenn einige Leute über das Blasse hinaus sind, dann sind dies dunkle und gefährliche Tage für Schottland.

“Ich denke, diese Kampagne wird das hervorheben.”

Die SNP-Politikerin sah sich zunächst einer Gegenreaktion gegenüber, nachdem sie darauf bestanden hatte, dass sie die Ehe als zwischen einem Mann und einer Frau betrachtet.

Sie sagte, sie hätte gegen die gleichgeschlechtliche Ehe gestimmt, wenn sie damals MSP gewesen wäre, betonte jedoch, dass sie die Rechte der Menschen nach geltendem Recht verteidigen werde.

Frau Forbes sprach heute Morgen im Times Radio und versuchte, die Folgen zu glätten.

„Ich bereue den Schmerz oder die Verletzung, die mir zugefügt wurde, sehr, denn das war auch nicht meine Absicht, und ich würde um Vergebung bitten, wenn es so rüberkommt“, sagte sie.

Frau Forbes fügte hinzu, dass sie die Rechte von LGBT+-Personen verteidige, „frei von Belästigung, Angst und Vorurteilen“ zu leben.

Sie verglich ihre Haltung mit der von Angela Merkel, die einer Abstimmung über das Thema zustimmte, sich gegen die Änderung aussprach, dann aber den Willen des Deutschen Bundestages umsetzte.

„Meine Position in diesen Angelegenheiten ist, dass ich das Recht aller in einer pluralistischen und toleranten Gesellschaft, frei von Belästigung und Angst zu leben und zu lieben, nach Kräften verteidigen werde“, sagte sie.

„Und auf die gleiche Weise hoffe ich, dass anderen das Recht von Menschen des Glaubens gewährt werden kann, einen fairen Mainstream-Unterricht zu praktizieren. Und das ist die Nuance, die wir bei der gleichberechtigten Ehe einfangen müssen.“

Herausgefordert, dass ihre Kampagne so gut wie beendet war, sagte Frau Forbes: „Absolut nicht. Wir haben eine große Parteimitgliedschaft, von denen die meisten nicht auf Twitter sind.

„Ich verstehe, dass die Leute sehr starke Ansichten zu diesen Angelegenheiten haben. Ich denke, die Öffentlichkeit sehnt sich danach, dass Politiker klare Fragen mit klaren Antworten beantworten, und das habe ich gestern in den Medien versucht. Das lässt nicht unbedingt viele Nuancen zu.

“Meine Position in diesen Angelegenheiten ist, dass ich in einer pluralistischen und toleranten Gesellschaft die Rechte aller Menschen, frei von Belästigung und Angst zu leben und zu lieben, mit Nachdruck verteidigen werde.”

Die gleichberechtigte Ehe wurde 2014 in Schottland mit einer überwältigenden Mehrheit von 105 zu 18 Stimmen legalisiert, während Frau Forbes erst bei den Wahlen 2016 in Holyrood gewählt wurde.

Frau Forbes sagte zuvor, sie hätte nicht für das Gesetz zur Reform der Geschlechtsanerkennung (Schottland) der schottischen Regierung in seiner jetzigen Form gestimmt.

Da sie sich in Elternzeit befand, nahm sie vor dem neuen Jahr nicht an der Schlussabstimmung teil, ist aber seit 2019 klar dagegen.

Sie war eine von 15 SNP-Politikern, die ihre Partei öffentlich aufforderten, die umstrittenen Vorschläge zu verschieben, die es Transgender-Personen erleichtern, sich selbst als ihr gewähltes Geschlecht zu identifizieren.

Sie sagte: „Meine Bedenken hinsichtlich der Selbstidentifikation waren gut dokumentiert, und ich hätte diese Bedenken hinsichtlich der Selbstidentifikation weiterhin gehabt.

„Es ist sehr schwierig, hypothetisch zu sprechen, wenn es um einen Gesetzentwurf geht, aber ich glaube, ich hätte Mühe gehabt, dieses Selbstidentifizierungselement des Gesetzes zur Anerkennung des Geschlechts zu unterstützen.“

Hätte sie dagegen gestimmt, hätte sie ihre Position als Finanzministerin aufgeben müssen.

In einer weiteren umstrittenen Intervention sagte Frau Forbes, der verurteilte Transgender-Vergewaltiger, der ursprünglich in ein Frauengefängnis gebracht wurde, sei „ein Mann“.

Frau Sturgeon wich zuvor Fragen aus, ob Isla Bryson, früher bekannt als Adam Graham, eine Frau ist, nachdem die 31-Jährige zweier sexueller Angriffe für schuldig befunden worden war.

Aber im Gespräch mit dem Daily Telegraph sagte Frau Forbes unmissverständlich, dass „kein Vergewaltiger eine Frau sein kann“ und dass „Isla Bryson ein Mann ist“.

Frau Forbes beschuldigte ihre Gegner auch, sie wegen ihres christlichen Glaubens angegriffen zu haben, „und nicht wegen ihrer Kompetenz, Erfahrung oder Vision“.

Sie sagte: „Wir müssen sehr vorsichtig sein, dass wir in Schottland nicht sagen, dass Sie kein öffentliches Amt bekleiden können, selbst das höchste öffentliche Amt, wenn Sie Mitglied eines bestimmten Glaubens sind.

„Oder Sie können ein öffentliches Amt bekleiden, aber Sie müssen tatsächlich Ihren Glauben abstreifen. Das scheint mir ein sehr illiberaler Ansatz zu sein.

Sie fügte hinzu: „Mein Ansatz ist, dass ich offen mit dem Glauben umgegangen bin, dem Einfluss des Glaubens auf mein Leben.

“Aber wir scheinen in der Lage zu sein, einen Hindu in Nummer 10 zu haben, ist es übertrieben zu glauben, dass wir einen Christen in Bute House haben könnten?”

“Ich würde viel lieber mit der britischen Regierung über die Änderungen diskutieren, die vorgenommen werden müssen, als mit der Herausforderung fortzufahren.”

Wer ist Humza Yousaf?

Humza Yousaf, 37, ist der Gesundheitsminister der schottischen Regierung, der 2018 Schottlands erster muslimischer Kabinettsminister wurde, als er zum Justizminister ernannt wurde.

Er ist seit 2016 MSP für Glasgow Pollok, nachdem er bereits 2011 im Alter von nur 26 Jahren als zusätzliches Mitglied für die Region Glasgow in das schottische Parlament gewählt worden war.

Obwohl er als möglicher Ersatz für Frau Sturgeon als Erste Ministerin vorgeschlagen wurde, könnten die Chancen von Herrn Yousaf durch die aktuelle Gesundheitskrise in Schottland beeinträchtigt werden.

Besonders unter Druck geraten sind die langen Wartezeiten auf Krankenwagen und Notfallversorgung.

Herr Yousaf hat mit seiner zweiten Frau Nadia El-Nakla eine Tochter und ein Stiefkind.

Im Gespräch mit The Scotsman sagte Frau Forbes, die sich seit Frühsommer letzten Jahres im Mutterschaftsurlaub und von der Frontpolitik ferngehalten hat, dass sie die gleichberechtigte Ehe nicht als „Gewissenssache“ unterstützt hätte, wenn sie Abgeordnete im Parlament gewesen wäre Zeit.

Sie führte das Beispiel von Angela Merkel als einer Führungspersönlichkeit an, die über die Angelegenheit „mit ihrem Gewissen“ abgestimmt habe.

Sie sagte: „Ich hätte aus Gewissensgründen für die Lehre der meisten großen Religionen gestimmt, dass die Ehe zwischen Mann und Frau besteht.

„Aber ich hätte die getroffene demokratische Entscheidung respektiert und verteidigt.

“Es ist jetzt ein legales Recht und ich bin ein Diener der Demokratie, ich bin kein Diktator.”

Frau Forbes verurteilte auch den „illiberalen Diskurs“ um ihren Glauben und wie ihre religiösen Ansichten ihre Entscheidungen als Erste Ministerin beeinflussen könnten.

Sie ist Mitglied der Free Church of Scotland und hatte zuvor gesagt, ihr Glaube habe keinen Einfluss auf ihre Fähigkeit, als MSP zu dienen.

Herr Yousaf sagte, er werde „immer für die Gleichberechtigung anderer kämpfen“.

Auf die Frage, was er davon halte, was Frau Forbes zur gleichgeschlechtlichen Ehe zu sagen habe, sagte Herr Yousaf gegenüber der Sendung Good Morning Scotland von BBC Radio Scotland: „Es ist ihre Sache, ihre Ansichten zu verteidigen, ich habe meine Ansichten sehr klar zum Ausdruck gebracht.

„Ich denke, meine Erfolgsbilanz in Gleichstellungsfragen spricht eine klare und deutliche Sprache.

„Ich bin eine Minderheit in diesem Land, ich war mein ganzes Leben lang eine Minderheit, und meine Rechte existieren nicht in einem Vakuum, meine Rechte hängen von den Rechten anderer Menschen ab, und deshalb glaube ich sehr fest daran, und zwar mit jeder Faser mein Wesen, dass deine Gleichheit meine Gleichheit ist, deshalb werde ich immer für die Gleichberechtigung anderer kämpfen, egal wer sie sind.’

The biologist bought stocks when rodent birth control went public. The barista had a hammer handy. The artist, who should have attended a meeting, trawled through a database and discovered an image of Venus in fur – snow-white fur. Pink tail and paws. And the alert, sensitive face of an animal that has been subjected to the violence of human observation many, many times.

Rats are known to be carriers of diseases. Less well known – if perhaps just as ubiquitous – rats act as vectors between perception and prejudice, imagination and behavior. How people respond to rats in our workplaces and homes demonstrates the level of our cruelty, innovation, and empathy — how ultimately willing we are to interact with species we occasionally keep as pets or laboratory animals, but almost always categorize as “other.” . ” In putting together this special edition of Public Seminary, I spoke to many people. From the biologist to the barista, from the site manager to the community gardener, everyone had a story to tell about rats.

After all, we’re so close. Rats and humans have such similar tastes that they follow us everywhere (except to Alberta – too cold). Rats work hard. They keep up with our peanut butter, our crops, our garbage collection, our overconsumption, our systemic injustice. Where the human social contract fails – for example in public housing with crumbling walls and dilapidated plumbing – rats thrive. Rafi Youatt traces the story of futile human efforts to eradicate rats and end our coexistence: “Not only do rats fill niches in the ecological sense, they fill socio-ecological niches.” Or as Curran Boyd puts it in his account of a winter he spent spent killing rats in an infested cafe, these commensal animals move into our abandoned infrastructure and set up “their ideal bed and breakfast.”

But while rats are busy making the best of our failures, we humans can’t keep up with their appetite for sex. A breeding pair has the potential to produce up to 15,000 offspring (across multiple generations) in a single year. We invent new traps – but new rats keep coming.

Recent innovations in rat control target their amazing fecundity, with implications for rats (and humans) around the world. In Aotearoa, New Zealand, the most recent budget for a national pest control program, Predator Free 2050, allocated NZ$2.25 million for research into a gene editing program that would manipulate rats into producing only offspring in their litters produce a sex. Across the world, in upstate New York, the Department of the Environment has approved for general use the drug ContraPest, a liquid bait laced with an “oral contraceptive” targeting both male and female rats. While the bait may be of limited use in cities with difficult-to-access tunnels and sewers, like New York and Washington, DC, ContraPest offers parks and neighborhoods a means of reducing rat populations that is non-toxic to the environment, other animals, and fellow wildlife to the rats themselves.

These developments could be a relief from the rhetoric of “warfare,” revenge, and bloodthirst favored by New York mayors. But Youatt’s essay reminds us to scrutinize any system of extermination – even a seemingly “humane” one – for its biopolitical implications: “The extermination of rats can be directly extrapolated to humans, called rats, as genocidal politics has done . ”

In particular, Predator Free 2050 in New Zealand raises questions, not only about the dangers of genetic modification, but also about the relative value of populations between different species. The government program’s mission – to protect endemic plant and animal species from introduced “pests” – is based on a hierarchy of perceived values ​​introduced by European settlers, such as the species Rattus rattus and Rattus norvegicus. In her investigation of rat “blind memory”, Anna Boswell highlights the fact that Predator Free 2050 also targets the Kiore or Pacific rat (Rattus exulans), a species that traveled to Aotearoa, New Zealand with Māori centuries earlier . “Make a mistake [kiore] for rats of the Northern World,” writes Boswell, “in obscuring their role in the te ao Māori as respected traveling companions who remember migratory paths, Pacific homelands, and shared genealogies.” In Boswell’s analysis, targeting Kiore is in an “ecological Purge” part of a larger settler-colonial act of error-memory—an attempt to erase an uncomfortable history.

But rats continue to bear witness. And the closeness of our shared history, as well as our many assassination attempts (both on their bodies and on their characters) have certainly sharpened rats’ noses for the hint of human hypocrisy. They are familiar with our poisons and our propaganda. Perhaps it is this training that helps rats win leading roles in our political satires. There they are recognized as multifaceted actors, capable of embodying both victims and perpetrators of violence – sometimes simultaneously. This duality is embodied in the monstrous body of “Scabby,” a giant inflatable rat who shows up at US companies to protest labor rights violations. As Cassandra Brey points out in a brief biography of the balloon rodent, Scabby’s testimony parodies both corporate “rat-like” greed and the protection of the striking workers, who greet the giant rat with affection.

In human political theater, the rat actor is almost always a proxy for human causes: a mask with round ears and whiskers, beneath a human mouth. But what do rats see when they look in the mirror? Reversing the literary tradition of rats as politicized bodies, Radhika Subramaniam offers a vision of rats as political bodies. Their “Report from the Rat Academy” charts a democracy as meticulously bureaucratic as our own, but focused on undeniably seedy causes (eras of sanitary vehicles, chewing, and “radical burrow network” technologies).

Rats’ concerns are common to all urban animals — roaches, pigeons, mice, wildcats — that humans categorize as “vermin” or unwanted. Some scholars and scientists, including Loretta Mayer, co-founder of Senestech, ContraPest’s parent company, have observed that it is precisely the success of rodents that causes problems for humans. Rats shouldn’t thrive in the city amid concrete and broken glass — or in parklands reserved for protected species, by the way. Almost everywhere rats travel, people perceive them as living in the wrong place.

Expelled from the zones of the “natural” and the “normal”, the rat wanders towards the avant-garde. In a dizzying passage from Marc Anthony Richardson’s experimental novel Year of the Rat, the narrator sees himself as a rat within the walls of his dying mother’s Philadelphia apartment. This image takes him back to a memory of San Francisco, where he and his mistress noticed one of the city’s dispossessed people sitting at a traffic intersection. The woman “was clutching something big and furry, wet and black: It had a semi-prehensile tail that curled around a forearm almost like that of a possum or a cat.”

The amazed narrator recalls that the woman not only stroked the giant rat in her lap, but that the rat “kissed her as if trying to bring great comfort in a time of greater distress.” Occupying an inadmissible space – loving and loved by a human – the rat shocks and reconfigures our vision. Richardson’s rat makes its habitat visible: the lived reality of human cities and the systems of racism, class and capital that create and enforce poverty.

Destigmatizing rats does not mean anyone has to suffer from rodent infestations and the destruction and disease that accompany them. “Nobody should have to live next to rats,” Caroline Bragdon observes in her conversation with Katy Einerson. As director of neighborhood assistance for New York City’s Pest Control Services, Bragdon points to the need for a “coordinated public health approach to rat control” with an emphasis on prevention: city officials, landlords, property owners and individuals hold each other accountable in the management of our waste.

It sounds easy. As so often, the problem is human.

In einer weiteren umstrittenen Intervention sagte Frau Forbes, der verurteilte Transgender-Vergewaltiger, der ursprünglich in ein Frauengefängnis gebracht wurde, sei „ein Mann“.

Frau Sturgeon wich zuvor Fragen aus, ob Isla Bryson, früher bekannt als Adam Graham, eine Frau ist, nachdem die 31-Jährige zweier sexueller Angriffe für schuldig befunden worden war.
