THURSDAY

Menlo School 6, Sacred Heart Prep 1

The Knights completed another undefeated WBAL campaign to capture its 36th division title.

Izzy Klugman was dominant for Menlo (8-0 WBAL), winning her No. 4 singles match at love. Elise Chen dropped only one game in a 6-1, 6-0 win at No. 2 singles, while Emily Li lost only one game per set in a 6-1, 6-1 victory.

SHP (4-2, 10-6) picked up its win at No. 1 doubles, where Shannon Bennitt and Thalia Stavropoulos posted a 6-1, 6-4 win.

The Scots (14-0 PAL Bay ) have captured their first PAL Division Tennis title since 2013 when they shared the honor. Menlo Atherton had won the last eight titles, but this was the girls first ever outright PAL Division title. Chloe Khachadourian, Megan Bence and Ujala Chauhan all shined for the Scots and Tessa Folan got the Ravens (5-9) on the board in singles but Carlmont would go onto sweep doubles.

Burlingame (10-4 PAL Bay) took care of Woodside (2-12) on Thursday namely on the singles side where they swept all four matches. Annabelle Bechtel and Madeline Lee would get the Wildcats on the board in doubles, but the third-placed Panthers would take the last two doubles matches of the game lead by Lyra Sheng and Ella Wang.

Menlo Atherton 5, Aragon 2

Eva Chow and Yara Abelsorour set the tone early in singles for the Bears (12-2 PAL Bay) with thorough victories over the Dons (8-6). Jessalyn Williams and Kat Russell for Aragon responded with a complete 4-6, 6-4, 10-4 doubles win but Marissa Hou and Hailey Hintze; and Sophia Jobst and Nia Sadrzadh would shut the door emphatically for the Bears with doubles wins of their own.

The Fighting Knights (3-11 PAL Bay) got off to a quick start on Thursday by taking all four singles matches over the Bearcats (2-12) highlighted by Gurkiran Sohal and Kellyn Murphy. The Bearcats would take two of three doubles matches lead by Tatum Fritts and Lauren Hong who dominated their day, but it was too little and too late for San Mateo.

Capuchino 5, Terra Nova 2

The Mustangs (7-6 PAL Ocean) started off hot on Thursday sweeping the singles competition despite falling 2-1 in doubles to the Tigers (2-12). Kayle Shum, Maddie Ciardella, Apolline Amato and Clare O’Shea set the tone in singles going 4-0 and outscoring the Tigers 48-6.

The second-place Vikings (12-2 PAL Ocean) were perfect in their defeat of Oceana (3-8) on Thursday. Kylie Huynh and Kaylee Chang lost just three games combined on their singles day while the Watabiki sisters, Ayana and Reina, cleanly swept their doubles match 6-0, 6-0. Oceana also took down El Camino 4-3 resuming their match from October 10 that ended abruptly due to darkness.

After Clarise Wu and Shannon Mercado won the first two singles matches of the day for Westmoor (8-6 PAL Ocean), the Colts (8-4) would go on to win the next five matches to earn the victory. The resilienicy of the Colts was on full display Thursday with three doubles victories despite dropping the first game in two of them lead by duo Ally Tunque and Eva Tamayo, and Madison Woo and Zayna Juhar.

Aragon 226, Hillsdale 235

The Dons clinched the PAL’s second automatic team berth into the Central Coast Section tournament by beating the rival Knights in the PAL CCS play-in match at Poplar Creek.

All six Aragon golfers shot rounds in the 40s, led by Kate Chong’s 6-over 41. Autumn Ogawa carded a 45 for the Dons, while Bridget Stewart came in with a 46. Hannah Liu and Addison Padian each added 47s to round out the scoring for Aragon.

Hillsdale was led by Ashyln Johnson, who posted the low round of the day with a 3-over 38.

Menlo School 14, St. Ignatius 7; Menlo School 14, St. Ignatius 0

Playing their fifth and sixth games of the week, the Knights improved to 14-1 with a sweep of the Wildcats.

Menlo has won 14 straight since a season-opening loss to Sacred Heart Prep.

In the first game, Menlo’s freshman quarterback Ava Allen threw a touchdown pass to Kylie Jones to cut the SI lead to 7-6 at halftime.

In the second half, Allen scored on a quarterback keeper for what turned out to be the game winner. Her pass to Sophie Housser for a 2-point conversion was the final margin of victory.

In Game 2, Mary Mahe connected with Ellie Knoll for a touchdown.

Sacred Heart Prep 13, Miramonte-Orinda 12

In a non-league battle of state heavyweights, the Gators came away with the one-goal win over the Matadors.

SHP led 6-4 at halftime before the teams combined for 10 third-quarter goals, with Miramonte forging a 10-10 tie going into the fourth period.

Nelson Harris paced the offense for SHP, scoring four goals. Oliver Marcin and Clay Carrington each netted hat tricks for the Gators. Carrington and Tyler Hogan each had three assists for SHP.

Hillsdale 17, Carlmont 15

The Knights held off the Scots in the regular-season finale and will now face Ocean Division champion Burlingame in the PAL CCS play-in game next Wednesday.

Josiah Yeager led the Hillsdale attack, scoring seven times and coming up with two steals. Isaiah Yeager had five assists, while Nathan Sprowls scored twice and assisted on three more goals.

Menlo-Atherton 16, Aragon 7

The Bears wrapped up a PAL Bay Division co-championship with the win over the Dons.

Both M-A and Woodside finished the regular season tied 10-2. Woodside earns the No. 1 seed out of the Bay for CCS seeding purposes, while M-A will get the division’s second of three automatic qualifiers.

Menlo-Atherton 7, Aragon 4

The Bears wrapped up their regular season and the outright Bay Division championship with the win over the Dons.

Abby Ko scored three goals to lead M-A, while Aragon got a match-high four goals from Daryn Schell.

Burlingame 3, San Mateo 0

The Panthers (11-2 PAL Bay, 18-5 overall) recovered nicely from their hard-fought 3-2 loss to first place Menlo Atherton on Wednesday with a clean sweep of the Bearcats (4-9, 16-12): 25-20, 25-21, 25-11. The loss for the Bearcats is their fourth straight in straight sets as they’ll look to rebound against Half Moon Bay to end the season.

Menlo Atherton 3, Carlmont 1

The Bears (13-0 PAL Bay) clinched the Bay Division title on Thursday after defeating the Scots (5-8, 13-14) by the score of 25-21, 25-22, 20-25, 25-19. For M-A, Meki Maile had nine aces and 28 assists while her junior counterpart Dani Eline had 17 kills and 16 digs. Maile’s assist total now grows to a team-high 480 on the season, 433 above second-place on the team.

While the Dons (10-3 PAL Bay, 17-11 overall) and the Ravens (3-10, 9-13) might find themselves on opposite sides of the standings, both teams combined for a thriller on Thursday with a score of 20-25, 27-29, 25-12, 25-16, 15-6. The win marks the third in a row for Aragon while the Ravens have now dropped their last four.

Hillsdale 3, Half Moon Bay 0

The Knights (4-9 PAL Bay, 8-16 overall) topped the Cougars (8-16, 2-11) in straight sets on Thursday, 25-23, 25-18, 25-18. Junior Natasha Abbaszadeh lead the way again for Hillsdale with 16 kills on the afternoon.

Terra Nova 3, Jefferson 0

The Tigers (7-6 PAL Ocean, 8-15) improved to 5-4 at home with a straight-set victory over the Grizzlies (1-12, 1-15), 25-14, 25-14, 25-5. Juniors Madison Williams and Emma Long had 13 and eight kills respectively.

The Colts (12-1 PAL Ocean, 20-5 overall) had little trouble taking down the Rams (1-12, 2-24) in straight sets, 25-14, 25-15, 25-10. El Camino now heads into the final week of PAL play tied with Woodside for the Ocean lead.

Capuchino 3, South San Francisco 0

The Mustangs (8-5 PAL Ocean, 9-6 overall) also handled their business in straight sets on Thursday with a victory over the Warriors (3-10, 8-19), 25-7, 27-25, 25-11. Junior Audrina Lopez for the Warriors had 32 digs and 28 received serves in the losing effort.

The fourth-placed Vikings (8-5 PAL Ocean, 8-17 overall) tested the first-place Wildcats (12-1, 16-8) impressively in their home loss on Thursday with a scoreline of 25-21, 20-25, 25-21, 15-25, 15-2. The Wildcats go on the road to Terra Nova to end the PAL season next week in hopes of a victory and an El Camino loss to win the Ocean title.

The Bulldogs swept the visiting Trojans, 25-16, 25-16, 25-19 Wednesday to improve to 3-0 in Coast South play.

Faith Crouch led the CSM offense with eight kills. Aniyah Hall and Olivia Harrision each had seven kills while Emeli Muagututia had 20 assists.

Shasta Grett had a match-high 10 kills to lead Skyline.

Since CSM head coach Katie Goldhahn started the program in 2015, the Bulldogs have yet to lose a set to Skyline.

CSM will host co-division leader West Valley Wednesday at 6:30 p.m.

We have some feelings about seemingly made-up holidays (looking at you, International Avocado Toast Day, or whatever), but one we are very on board with is Small Business Saturday, which encourages us all to support the local, independent businesses in our city (instead of, say, blowing dollars at a world-dominating online behemoth). San Francisco, being a city filled to the brim with stunningly creative folks, is a most excellent place to support a small business, particularly if you have holiday gifting on the mind (yes, gifting yourself is absolutely a thing). From NoPa to Chinatown, here are 15 of our go-tos for clothes, jewelry, records, plants, books, and more.

SAN FRANCISCO (KGO) — Parts of the Bay Area are seeing scattered showers continue Thursday night. But don’t put those umbrellas away yet, another soaking is headed our way.

LIVE RADAR: Track storms as they move through the Bay Area with Live Doppler 7

The slow-moving storm is continuing across the region, with steadier drizzle seen along the coast and in our hills and mountains. The wet weather is expected to continue through the evening, with overnight light rain and higher elevation drizzle becoming less widespread.

By the beginning of Friday’s morning commute, lingering moisture remains mainly in the form of patchy dense fog, especially across North Bay neighborhoods. A few areas of drizzle are still possible, though streets should begin to dry as our morning rush unfolds.

This storm will produce additional rainfall up to .20 inches.

A faster moving and more potent storm starts our weekend with an early soaking.

Categorized as a 1 on the ABC7 Storm Impact Scale, the storm arrives Saturday morning.

VIDEO: Thinning snowpack indicates wider challenge for California, other states across Western US

The initial wave of light to moderate showers moves into the North Bay around 1 am A second wave of light to moderate rain develops along a cold front. This moves into the North Bay around 3 am and spreads into the Bay by 4 am and South Bay by 5 am After this line moves east, scattered showers remain until 1 pm

Rainfall totals range from .30 inches to 1 inch with ponding possible on our roads during the heaviest rain.

It will be a breezy Saturday, as wind gusts accompany the wet weather that will taper after 1 pm

The San Francisco Bay Area was soaked in sunshine on Friday afternoon, but forecasters say much-needed rain is on the way Saturday.

A weak weather system is expected to arrive tomorrow morning and deliver light, widespread rain into the afternoon, the National Weather Service said.

“The moisture tap with this system is greater and limiting rainfall potential,” the weather service said in its forecast.

A tenth to a quarter of an inch is forecast for areas across the Bay Area, Roger Gass, a meteorologist with the weather service said.

“There is always the possibility that some locations will see less than a tenth of an inch, especially in the three inland valley locations, and some spots could see a little more than a quarter of an inch,” Gass said. “It’s not much, but we’ll take what we can get.”

Cold air aloft in the atmosphere on Saturday could cause short spurts of moderate rainfall and even hail, and there’s a 10% chance of thunderstorms, the weather service said.

“The system does have a little bit of oomph to it,” Gass said. “There’s some instability that could cause an isolated thunderstorm, but the possibility remains very low.”

Showers will subside quickly by Saturday evening and dry conditions are expected overnight, but “there will be a nip in the air,” the weather service said. Widespread 40s are forecast overnight with some inland locations even getting into the 30s.

Temperatures are expected to rebound on Sunday and Monday marks the start of an early season heat wave with high pressure building over the eastern Pacific Ocean.

The weather service is forecasting temperatures in the mid-to-high 70s for inland valleys and mid-60s for coastal areas on Monday.

Tuesday and Wednesday will likely be the hottest days of the week, with more locations breaking into the 80s.

“Either of those days could be the peak of the warming for this event,” Gass said.

Aaron Rodgers understands his hopes for a second Super Bowl title with the Green Bay Packers are running out of time.

The 38-year-old quarterback’s final postseason run begins Saturday night as he attempts to beat the team that has served as the three-time MVP’s greatest nemesis in the playoffs.

Rodgers has a 0-3 playoff record against the San Francisco 49ers, despite beating them in the regular season for the past two years. The top-ranked Packers (13-4) and 49ers (11-7) face off again Saturday night in an NFC division playoff game at Lambeau Field.

“I think mortality in football is something we all think about,” Rodgers said. “And we all think about how many opportunities are presented to us to move forward, and each one is special.”

Since stumbling to a 3-5 start, the 49ers have won eight of 10 while showing a knack for delivering away. They secured a playoff spot by recovering from a 17-0 deficit to win an away game in overtime with the Los Angeles Rams and followed that up with a 23-17 wildcard win in Dallas.

Quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo says San Francisco’s slow start prompted the 49ers to adopt a playoff mentality prematurely.

“When you put that pressure on your team early on, it creates a mindset,” Garoppolo said. “It creates an atmosphere of urgency in the dressing room that we need to win now and make some plays.”

The Packers defeated the 49ers 30-28 on the road on September 26, with the 49ers erasing a 17-0 deficit and taking the lead in the last minute before Rodgers Green Bay for Mason Crosby’s 51-yard field goal positioned time up. The Packers also beat the 49ers away from home last season, 34-17.

But the 49ers can draw on their successful postseason history against Rodgers’ Packers, including a 37-20 win in the NFC Championship game two seasons ago.

“This is a special opportunity,” Rodgers said. “We’re not going to make it bigger than it is. We’ve come to the point where we’re level headed and balanced and haven’t triggered a roller coaster of emotions, and we will continue to do the same. So if it was good enough to get us this far, it’s good enough to get us past this point.”

DYNAMIC DEEBO

Deebo Samuel has added another role to his all-round squad.

The dynamic receiver and runner showed off his forecasting skills last week. After San Francisco intercepted a pass, Samuel challenged coach Kyle Shanahan to get him the ball and he would score. Shanahan called a handoff on the next play, and Samuel took it 26 yards for a TD.

“I’ve been doing this for a long time and I’ve never been anywhere near a football player who’s done his own thing,” said Mike McDaniel, 49ers offensive coordinator. “I go to basketball, but when you play with 22 people on the field, 11 of them try to attack you with all their might. And you’re just like, ‘Hey, yeah, give me the ball, I’ll put the ball in the box’, and for him that was a special moment that only a special player could achieve.”

Samuel has 1,880 yards from scrimmage and 15 touchdowns this season, including the playoffs.

STAY DISCIPLINE

Green Bay’s most obvious concern is slowing down a 49ers rushing attack. Elijah Mitchell and Samuel ran 168 yards together against the Cowboys.

The Packers say they also need to pay attention to what linebacker De’Vondre Campbell described as “eye candy.” Campbell was referring to various shifts and pre-snap moves that Shanahan uses to trick defenders into looking the wrong way.

“The way he designs his plays, the moves, and all the different kinds of shifts and all that kind of stuff, it’s something that draws everyone’s attention,” said Packers defensive tackle Kenny Clark. “So if your eyes are in the wrong place, if you’re not doing your job or doing what you’re trained to do, he can take advantage of that.”

VIOLATION UPDATES

Packer’s offensive tackle David Bakhtiari (knee) and cornerback Jaire Alexander (shoulder) are questionable and wide receiver Marquez Valdes-Scantling (back) is iffy. The Packers are awaiting wide receiver Randall Cobb (core) and offensive tackle Billy Turner (knee) after injuries knocked them out for the latter part of the regular season.

49ers defensive end Nick Bosa (concussion), cornerback Ambry Thomas (knee) and defensive end Jordan Willis (ankle) are questionable. Bosa was deleted from the concussion log.

DEFEND DAVANTE

Green Bay’s Davante Adams caught 12 passes for 132 yards and a touchdown in the Packers’ regular-season win over the 49ers.

San Francisco is stronger in the secondary now than it was in September thanks to Thomas’ late-season appearance, but defensive coordinator DeMeco Ryans knows slowing Adams will be a tall order.

“They make it difficult because they move Davante great,” Ryans said. “He doesn’t stay in one place. He can move into the slot. He can play outside. He is everywhere.”

tundra

The forecast for Saturday in Green Bay calls for a high of 19 degrees with a low of 7, although no snow is expected.

SAN FRANCISCO – The Pac-12 conference set the schedule for their final football weekend.

The conference announced on Sunday that its teams will play six games, including Washington ranked 16th in Southern California in Friday’s Pac-12 championship game.

Oregon will face number 21 Colorado on Saturday at the Memorial Coliseum in Southern California. The winner of this game could slip into a postponed title game if the Trojans or Huskies are unable to play due to COVID-19 issues.

Saturday’s games also include Washington State in Utah, Stanford at UCLA and Arizona State in Oregon State. Arizona will meet California at a time and place to be determined. The Wildcats sacked coach Kevin Sumlin on Saturday after losing to the state of Arizona.

The Pac-12 left the schedule open for the last weekend of the season to have flexibility in a year when the coronavirus pandemic has resulted in cancellations and postponements across the country.

USC secured a spot in the Pac-12 title game for the first time since 2017 by beating rivals UCLA 43-38 on Saturday.

Washington won its third Pac-12 North title in five years with a 38-21 win over Colorado.

The conference went to a home-hosted model for that season’s championship game.

Further coverage of the cancellation of the Cal game on Saturday and the opponent from Saturday this week in the Daily News in print and online.

SAN FRANCISCO (CBS SF) – The Bay Area Air Quality Management District issued another air quality recommendation for the region due to forest fire smoke for Saturday.

It is the fourth day in a row that the BAAQMD has placed the Bay Area under an air quality recommendation. The region has also been under a Spare the Air Alert since Thursday – which prohibits burning wood or other solid fuels both indoors and outdoors. The Spare the Air Alert expires after Friday.

Today, 08/20, Save the Air Alert! The air quality in the Bay Area is expected to be unhealthy for sensitive groups in all regions. Tomorrow, 08/21, air quality advice! The air quality is expected to be good in Coast and Central Bay and South Central Bay, and moderate in all other regions. pic.twitter.com/2kdtMPWnvJ

– Bay Area Air Quality (@AirDistrict) August 20, 2021

According to a press release issued by BAAQMD, smoke from wildfires in Washington, Oregon and Northern California, which moved offshore since the middle of the week, will continue to affect the Bay Area on Saturday.

“We look at the unhealthy air quality down on the ground. We assume that in the orange category it will be unhealthy for sensitive groups, ”BAAQMD spokesman Aaron Richardson told KPIX 5.

The smoky air was inevitable for anyone outside in the Bay Area on Friday.

“You have this heavy feeling in your chest and it’s not an allergy,” said Kim Vostermans, who went on a bike ride with her friend Kelly Hodge in Campbell.

“It’s hard to exercise, it’s hard to walk, walk the dog, ride a bike. It’s hard to eat outside in this heat with the doors and windows open. It’s a shame, but again, we’re not the ones trying to fight the fires, ”Hodge told KPIX 5.

Rod Pomales rode his bike hard up Alum Rock Avenue in San Jose, the bad air in his eyes. “I can smell it a little. I don’t feel it, ”said Pomales.

The organizers of Campbell’s Boogie Music Festival – which has been postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic – are now hoping the air quality won’t keep people away this weekend.

CONTINUE READING: Afghan community in Fremont’s Little Kabul rallies in support of refugees

“I hope the wind picks up a little tonight and turns a little,” said Ken Johnson of the Campbell Chamber of Commerce.

Masks are optional at the festival but are now preferred for several reasons, including smoke.

“It will possibly give people a bigger reason to put their masks on when they didn’t want to. So the hope is to have fun and be safe, ”said Johnson.

The fires in Northern California burned more than 1 million acres, or 2,000 square miles, during this devastating fire season. The Dixie Fire – which is spread across five counties – burned over 700,000 acres alone.

The McFarlane fire in Counties Shasta, Trinity and Tehama burned nearly 116,000 acres, while the Caldor Fire in Sierra Nevada grew again overnight and has now consumed over 73,000 acres, firefighters said Friday.

The persistent smoke hovering over the area will cause foggy, smoky skies with a noticeable odor in the air in some areas, despite officials saying pollution levels were not expected to exceed federal health standards. The air quality in the air quality index is expected to be in the good to low medium range, so there is no Spare the Air Alert for Saturday.

The Air District will continue to monitor air quality across the region for smoke effects from ongoing forest fires.

If the smell of smoke is noticeable, Bay Area residents are advised to protect their health by avoiding exposure. All residents – especially those with breathing problems – are advised to stay indoors with the windows and doors closed until the smoke subsides, if temperatures allow. The BAAQMD also recommends that those affected by smoke turn their air conditioning and car ventilation systems on to recirculation to prevent outside air from getting inside.

Residents can track changes in air quality at baaqmd.gov/highs or on the AirNow Fire and Smoke Map at fire.airnow.gov.

To find out when a spare-the-air alert is in effect, residents can register for text alerts by sending the word “START” to 817-57, register for email AirAlerts at sparetheat.org, 1 Call (800) HELP-AIR, download the Spare the Air app or connect with Spare the Air on Facebook or Twitter.
