SAN FRANCISCO — Small businesses in San Francisco have faced repeated vandalism and break-ins, so much so that merchants are questioning the feasibility of staying in the city.

Josie Li, owner of La Boutique salon on Polk Street, said she was hit by burglars four times in the past year. She estimates the losses and repairs at over $40,000.

She said her insurance claims are so common that she worries her insurance carrier might start to question if they’re legitimate.

Li said every time thieves took away electronics, cash and beauty products. Her mailbox was also broken into repeatedly.

“It was shocking, but also not only traumatic, but simply surprising in one of the largest and most expensive cities that you would think could sustain business,” Li said.

In January, the beauty salon’s cell phone was stolen. Tracking technology showed it was about half a mile away near Van Ness and Geary.

“By the time the police arrived, it had been a few hours since I discovered the incident and by that time the phone was already off,” she said.

Like many small business owners in San Francisco, Li struggles to get people to come through the doors.

She opened this space a year ago after closing her shop for 18 months during the pandemic.

SFPD crime data shows burglaries this year in the Northern District, which includes Polk Gulch, are up more than 30% compared to the same period last year.

“It’s almost a national joke for our city at this point and it’s like we’re trying to bring it up, we’re making this place as vibrant as possible,” Li said worry about what is dangerous.”

This month Mayor London Breed introduced an additional $27 million budget to ensure continued police presence and expand hiring of community ambassadors in business areas.

SFPD has a staff shortage of 541 officers.

“I think the police on an individual level, when I see them they’re very sympathetic and then they say – they’re trying to help, they’re doing their job and they’re filing the report and everything, but I think we’ve defamed them Police so much that we don’t have enough police now,” Li said.

Li is considering moving her business elsewhere, but starting over is also costly. She said it took her a year to build a customer base at her new location.

She added that the Community Benefit District is helping her with funds for a security system. She also said there is a community patrol on Polk Street that begins at 5 a.m. The burglaries usually happen at night.

SF District Attorney Communications Director Randy Quezada said in a statement to KPIX 5:

The District Attorney is focused on improving public safety, restoring accountability, and seeking justice. To improve processes and outcomes in cases like Le Café Du Soleil, District Attorney Jenkins created a Major Crimes Team within the General Felonies Division to focus on more serious and complex crimes, such as some armed robberies and attempted murder cases that are time consuming and more complicated. With the establishment of this new team, General Felonies’ prosecutors will be able to better handle property crime and other crime cases as they come.

    Betty Ju

Betty Yu joined KPIX 5 in November 2013 as a general assignments reporter. She spent two years as a reporter at WTVJ, NBC’s Miami-based network, before relocating to San Francisco.

Here are the top 4 stories in Healdsburg today:

The transformation of Healdsburg Plaza is ongoing as we speak for that big “Merry Healdsburg Weekend” event starting tonight. The centerpiece of the event will be the lighting of a huge, living tree at the north end of the square around 6pm. There will also be a range of other family-friendly activities including photos with Santa, a demonstration of the “Grinch,” hot chocolate and desserts, etc. – all to the tune of the Healdsburg Chorus and a jazz quartet play Christmas music. According to the Tribune, “The festivities begin in the plaza at 5pm with a Hanukkah ceremony, followed by Christmas carols that will be in the plaza until around 6pm when Santa Claus arrives in a fire truck. Santa Claus will then help the city council with a Countdown to the lighting of the Plaza Christmas Tree“For the remainder of the weekend, downtown shops will have a street sale and the choir will perform a few times around town. (Facebook & Facebook & SoCoNews Healdsburg)

After years of searching, the Alexander Valley truffle farmer Seth Angerer and his loyal truffle dog Leo have found out what the Angerer family is claims to be “the first cultivated truffle found in the Alexander Valley”. Seth was reportedly “up and down his family’s hazelnut plantations in Geyserville” last week when he came across the “Sonoma County’s 5.03 ounce black melanosporum.” Says his father Fran: “We waited nine years and eight months, and we didn’t find anything. Every year we get discouraged. “Sonoma Magazine reports that” the truffle hunting season typically runs from January to March, so an early truffle in November was an especially exciting find for the angerers. The fact that Black truffles can cost up to $ 95 an ounce is just as exciting. “Read the full story here. (Sonoma Magazine)

The suggested 316 miles The Great Redwood Trail through Healdsburg is “one step closer” Become a reality “after receiving millions in new amounts from the state budget, according to the trail’s champion Mike McGuire, Healdsburg’s own Senator.” This is a turning point, “he says. The trail would run from Humboldt Bay to San Francisco Bay, much of it next to the SMART train tracks, and would use our recently completed Foss Creek Pathway for the Healdsburg route. “When the Great Redwood Trail is built, it will be the longest rail-to-trail in the United States,” says McGuire. “This trail passes through and near some of the most spectacular landscapes on earth, including ancient redwoods state parks and national forests. hills dotted with golden oaks, lush vineyards and of course on the banks of the Russian and eel rivers. “Click through to learn about the remaining hurdles before they become a reality. (Eureka Times standard)

did you know already Tour de France winner Cadel Evans ran in the Healdsburg Turkey Trot thanksgiving last week? From the PD’s pages: “Hiding among those who wear turkey hats made of felt is the guy disguised as a wine bottle (I see you press democrat, Matt Villano) 47 dogs, a goat and two cats, who stood up to run Healdsburg’s ever-festive turkey trot last week was a four-time Olympic and Tour de France winner. “Evans reportedly competed in four Olympics and won the Tour de France before retiring from cycling in 2015 finished sixth in the Healdsburg Turkey Trot.

SAN FRANCISCO – An irritable Nancy Pelosi said Wednesday she was taking responsibility for trusting the word of a hair salon in San Francisco that it was okay to come for a one-on-one visit – even though the city still doesn’t have an indoor pool due to the coronavirus Beauty services allows pandemic.

But the Democratic House spokeswoman called the Monday visit a “facility” and said the salon owed her an apology for misrepresenting the city’s health care contracts.

“I take the responsibility for taking the word of a neighborhood salon I’ve been to many times over the years and that when they said … we are able to accommodate people one by one and that we can pinpoint Until then, I trusted it, “Pelosi told reporters on Wednesday. “It turned out to be a setup.”

“I take responsibility for falling in love with a setup,” she said.

An attorney for the man who did her hair also said Pelosi was apparently set up.

Matthew Soleimanpour said his client had received permission from the salon owner the day before to make the appointment.

During that phone call, the owner, Erica Kious, “made several critical and very timely comments on Speaker Pelosi,” Soleimanpour said in a statement.

“It appears that Ms. Kious is promoting a Spokesman Pelosi facility for her own futile endeavors,” the statement said.

Pelosi faces severe setbacks after Fox News Channel broadcast surveillance videos from the salon showing her walking around the salon with wet hair and a mask around her neck rather than on her face. In the clip, a masked stylist follows her.

Critics, including President Donald Trump, called her a hypocrite and asked why she wasn’t aware of the coronavirus rules in her hometown.

Kious, owner of ESalon SF in upscale Cow Hollow, told Fox News that she is renting chairs to stylists, and one of them told her in advance that Pelosi wanted to wash and blow dry herself. California salon guidelines vary by state, but strict San Francisco officials have not yet allowed indoor salons to open.

Kious said she viewed Pelosi as a “slap in the face” for struggling business owners.

However, in his statement, Soleimanpour said that photos and other information show that Kious had performed maskless indoor services for at least April and that she had also encouraged “and almost forced stylists” to work.

Kious did not respond to repeated requests for comment from The Associated Press.

Violations of the health order can result in a fine, imprisonment, or both. But San Francisco has stressed enforcement education and has been reluctant to punish businesses and individuals.

Pelosi said Wednesday she would not answer any more questions about the visit and at one point asked if reporters had any questions “about the fact that people are dying,” referring to the HEROES Act legislation they are on Called press conference.

A reporter asked why she wasn’t wearing a mask in the short clip.

“I just got my hair washed. I don’t wear a mask when I wash my hair. Do you wear a mask when you wash your hair? I always have a mask,” said Pelosi.
