Completely preserved Sixties Palm Springs residence on the market goes viral

This home at 1240 S. Manzanita Ave. in Palm Springs was listed for $1.85 million.

A house in Palm Springs that was recently listed for $1.85 million has caught the internet’s attention for its perfectly preserved 1960s interior and its former owner, celebrity plumber Jack Stephan.

The home at 1240 S. Manzanita Ave. looks unassuming enough from the street, but inside, it’s a time capsule, featuring authentic vintage furniture and home fixtures that stand out in shocks of red, pink and orange.

The house received some attention after it was featured by TikTok user @zillowtastrophes, who described the house’s interior as “sumptuous and luxurious.”

“Each room just gets more and more saturated,” she said in the video. “I just think people are going to start rebelling against the beige, modern, minimal aesthetic.”

The four-bedroom, five-bathroom house features a sunken living room, wet bar and kidney-shaped pool. It was designed by midcentury modern architect Robert Lewis in 1965, and its interior was customized for its first owner, “plumber to the stars” Jack Stephan.

“This is a very special property. They’ve kept everything as original as possible,” Alex Dethier, the house’s agent, told SFGATE.

Stephan spent upward of $160,000 on the house’s furnishings in 1969, Dethier said, and that investment is still preserved for the home’s next owner. He lived in the house from 1969 until his death in 2014. He was well known for his flamboyant commercials advertising his Southern California plumbing business. After his death, his son described him to the Los Angeles Times as “the Cal Worthington of plumbing.”

Dethier said he’s already received interest in the property after listing it this week, though he added that many callers seem to be “looky-loos,” so only qualified buyers are able to tour the property.

“It’s a fantastic house. It’s hard to not walk in it and feel like you’re back in time,” Dethier said.

On the street where famed Bay Area architect Bernard Maybeck lived and worked, 3 Maybeck Twin Drive is for sale, asking $3.5 million. The Berkeley home, completely remodeled in 2014, offers a contemporary update on classic mid-century design.

The street this house rests on is historic, as its name might imply. Maybeck is credited with such iconic designs as the Palace of Fine Arts in San Francisco and the First Church of Christ, Scientist, in Berkeley, along with numerous distinctive buildings and residential homes across California (though he primarily worked in the Bay Area).

Maybeck himself at one point lived in a cottage on the corner of this street, which would later be named Maybeck Twin Drive, and eventually moved his studio and office to what is now 1 Maybeck Twin Drive. According to the Berkeley Historical Plaque Project, the Maybeck Cottage was the primary residence of Maybeck and his wife Annie until they both died: “It began when Maybeck trucked an abandoned real estate field office to this site of the family home, which had been destroyed in the 1923 Berkeley Fire. He covered the building with fire-resistant large shingles made from jute sacks dipped in a concrete mixture called Bubblestone.”

Eventually, Maybeck purchased the entire tract of land that became Maybeck Twin Drive, a name Maybeck chose to honor his twin granddaughters, listing agent Norah Brower told SFGATE in an email. Norah and her daughter, Daniella Brower, both of Compass Realty, are the co-listing agents for this property.

Even among other significant homes on a historic street, 3 Maybeck Twin Drive is special in many ways. This house was originally built in 1973, but under the careful and dramatic overhaul its current owners commissioned, it feels now like a more contemporary version of a Maybeck-inspired design.

“The current iteration nods to the mid-century aesthetic, with open plan living and a focus on views and vistas. The house utilizes rare high-quality wood throughout and integrates organic design and movement throughout the structure,” Daniella said.

The home we see now, a three-bedroom, three-and-a-half-bathroom abode of 2,198 square feet was remodeled from the studs up in 2014. Features are custom, from the hand-stitched wallpaper and red Heath tiles to a floating black hearth fireplace. The open flow of the interior is enhanced by tall ceilings, glass walls, built-in cabinetry and a Murphy bed. The home opens to large decks overlooking the Berkeley Hills.

Houses don’t come up for sale on this street very often: The last one SFGATE covered was in 2021, a Japanese palace-inspired mid-century that had been in one family for 50 years. The last time 3 Maybeck Twin Drive sold was in 2013, when it went for $1.4 million.

Ansel Adams Property in San Francisco for Sale for $5.4 Million

The estate of late famed photographer Ansel Adams is up for sale at a $5.4 million asking price.

The home has four bedrooms and three and a half baths and is in the picturesque West Clay Park area of San Francisco. The home, which was built in 1902, the same year Adams was born, includes a salon annex that the photographer designed himself and added in 1929. Adams lived at the San Francisco home until moving his family to the Monterey Peninsula in California in 1957.

“During Adams’ ownership and the subsequent years, this room transported the spirit of the great residential salons of Europe through its life as a meeting point for the city’s artistic talents filling the room with classical music and operatic song. This wing of the home has a loft-like, romantic art studio with sitting room and the primary suite with a sitting area and outlooks to the garden,” the Sotheby’s listing for the house reads.

The 3,810-square-foot home features an outdoor living area, a wood burning fireplace, terrace, glass atrium dining area, and a loft-like art studio, the listing describes. The long driveway leading to the home is surrounded by “a terraced garden design by the renowned landscape architect Topher Delaney.”

Adams was renowned for his landscape photography, but he was also a master of technique. With Fred Archer, Adams developed the Zone System, which can be used to capture a wide scale of tones within a single image. His sharp eye and attention to detail in each shadow and highlight is part of why he’s remembered as one of the most influential landscape photographers in history.

It’s not hard to imagine the inspiration Adams might have taken in the very home up for sale today. Just a short walk to both the water and the Presidio of San Francisco, a national park, he would have access to San Francisco’s beauty simply by walking out the door. Even within the home, the sun shined through the foyer, large windows let in heaps of natural light and views of the Golden Gate Bridge, which was first constructed from 1933 to 1937 while Adams lived in the San Francisco home.

Adams passed away in 1984, but remains well-known for his iconic photographs.

Former owner Deward Hastings, who famously welcomed the public to his backyard hot tub, died in September 2022 doing what he loved best, hot tubbing, officials said at the time. Now, the administrator of his estate has put the bungalow at 2133 Essex St. up for sale for $899,000.

Hastings purchased the property in 1969 and reportedly built the hot tub and began opening it to the public in 1975. In 2000, a San Francisco Chronicle article claimed that more than 30,000 people from around the world had visited the home for hot tub parties. It became so popular that Hastings eventually had to install a lock with individual passcodes that he could monitor (and cancel, if needed). At the time, he estimated that around 60 people were using his hot tub every day.

Built in 1906, the two-bedroom, one-bathroom home has many original architectural details that could be preserved, but much of the house needs updating. There’s a fireplace in the living room, and the dining room features built-ins.

The large garage has potential for conversion, Corcoran Icon Properties listing agent Michael Stephens told SFGATE. There’s also a large backyard with towering redwoods. He expects plenty of interest in the home and said that it should be sold by the end of October.

Until now, there have been only two owners of 1064 Via Alta, a historic midcentury modern home designed by architect Robert Klemmedson. Lafayette’s “House of Balconies” sold in less than a month at nearly 30% over asking.

Klemmedson built many Bay Area homes during his career, including the 3,170-square-foot home he designed for John Ford, a Bay Area salesman.

Though its five-bedroom, three-bathroom interior features many hallmarks of midcentury design, the Lafayette house is one of a kind. In 1962, the San Francisco Examiner featured the home on the cover, dubbing the abode “The House of Balconies” and lauding these outdoor spaces that surround the home.

Inside, the stamp of Klemmedson’s unique midcentury modern aesthetic is everywhere, including the floor-to-ceiling double-sided fireplace with slate and copper hearth, the sunken living room, the original stonework walls, wood paneling, cantilevered ceilings, and an entire wall of glass overlooking the back patio and pool.

Both families who have owned this house since the late 1950s have sought to preserve it, and that conservation wasn’t always easy. Listing agent Linnette Edwards of Abio Properties described the process of restoring the home’s mahogany paneled walls to their original red-gold as particularly arduous. “The wood had become quite dark and grayish over time,” Edwards wrote in an email to SFGATE. “The seller worked with a designer and team for several months to painstakingly sand and bring out this warm strawberry blond hue. This was no quick task, considering the vast amount of paneling in the home. They must have passed over each section 4-5 times!”

The home has received modern renovations, notably in the kitchen and bathrooms, but the updates in no way detract from the original intention of the home’s design.

The most recent owners of 1064 Via Alta had it for over 60 years. Edwards told SFGATE that, according to the family, “when they bought the home in the ’60s, it was the largest loan/mortgage Lafayette had seen at that time (approximately $65,000).” When it debuted on the market on July 6, 2023, the asking price was $2.8 million. Within a week, the property was pending. On Aug. 3, it sold for $3.4 million.
