James “Jim” Franklin Mulligan lost a courageous five-year battle with Leukemia. Jim was a supremely talented man and a jack-of-all-trades who taught himself construction, electrical, plumbing, and tile setting during his life He held a number of positions including long haul trucker (48 states), stagehand (San Francisco Opera), insurance adjuster, San Francisco muni driver, and property superintendent.

Jim was born on February 12, 1943, in Sacramento to Peter “Bart” Bartholomew Mulligan and Selma “Sally Jo” Josephine (Six) Mulligan.

These are just the facts of Jim’s life, but what is more important is the quality of his life. Jim was universally loved and respected by everyone who knew him. He was kind almost to a fault, always considering the feelings of others even over his own. A selfless man, Jim was kind and respectful of everyone he met, treating everyone equally and as if they were a friend. His spiritual values encouraged him to read deeply on, “The Higher Things to Which Man May Attain,” and lived his life in that fashion. Jim’s many self-taught skills were reflective of a modern Renaissance Man; it seems as if he could do anything, but he was eager to learn those things he had not yet mastered.

Donations in Jim’s memory can be made to Food For Thought Food Bank in Sonoma County that is dedicated to serving folks with serious medical condition. www.fftfoodbank.org or the Christian Brothers Order. This was Jim’s choice, and it goes to scholarships and care of retired Brothers. Jim was in the order from 1961 to 1965. lcbfoundation.org.

Jim will be sorely missed by his siblings, Rita (Frank) Perella, Pat (Julie) Mulligan and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins, his sisters-in-law Carol Fairchild, Donna Madeira, and Billie Zwolinski and brother-in-law Paul Zwolinski, but no more than by the love of his life for 55 years, Frank John Zwolinski, who will miss him more than anything.

His wife, Muriel; daughter, Meredith Ferino; son, Jon Mahall, and sister, Connie Hageman, were at his side. He is also survived by his brother Jeffrey Mahall (Susan); brother-in-law, Jim Hageman; daughter-in-law, Tracy Barton Mahall; former son-in-law, Randy Ferino; grandchildren: Kingsley Mahall, Harrison and Olive Ferino; a niece, several nephews and great nieces and nephews (in Texas, Colorado, and Ohio).

Almost 84 years ago, in Cleveland, OH, John (Jack) started his adventure-filled journey, the first of four children– Neal, Jeffrey and Connie. His parents were Cornelius and Adele Mahall. The children grew up bowling and working at Mahall’s 20 Lanes, Lakewood Ohio, founded by their grandfather almost 100 years ago. Besides bowling, Jack also enjoyed ice skating and later, skiing. His father was a private pilot, and became a flight trainer for the Navy during World War II, which may have stoked Jack’s passion for aviation.

As a teenager, Jack built and raced U-controlled model airplanes. In one competition in Cleveland, he was awarded ten hours of private flight instruction. This started his aviation career path.

In 1963, Jack graduated from Miami University, Oxford, Ohio, and soon joined the United States Air Force. He graduated with honors from both Officer Training and Navigator schools. In a tactical troop carrier, Jack navigated all over the world. He spent twelve months in Vietnam and his “best vacation ever” was three weeks in Australia,” where he snow skied and attended a sports car race.

The ultimate goal was to be a pilot, so after six years, he left the Air Force where he felt “stuck” as a navigator. Jack moved to Sacramento and the Bay area to begin logging hours as a flight instructor.

In 1972, he settled in Sonoma County, becoming chief pilot of a start-up commuter airline, STOL Air Commuter, with routes from Santa Rosa to San Francisco. In Santa Rosa he met Muriel Ferrell. They married in 1975 and had two children, Meredith and Jon. The family moved to Cotati in 1986.

After STOL Air, Jack was chief pilot for a small freight airline, Western Star, which flew to Reno and Fresno. Then an opportunity to fly jet aircraft came with the freight company, IASCO, flying from San Francisco to Denver CO, and Columbus, OH. The next big break came with Evergreen International Airlines. He began flying the Falcon and six months later was in the captain’s seat of a Boeing 727. This position morphed into a career with United Parcel Service where he also flew the 757 and 767. He was a UPS captain for ten years then, after aging out of the captain’s seat, spent another ten years as a flight engineer on the Boeing 747.

In his spare time, Jack loved designing and building, so he transformed the Cotati home, a 1,700 square foot ranch, into a 2,700 square foot contemporary. A “Jack of all trades,” he did 90% of the work himself–sheet rock, plumbing, tile, hardwood floors, and electrical. Later, he landscaped the yard and built an 11,000 gallon koi pond. One neighbor used to call him “Mr. Winchester,” and would ask about how the “Cotati Mystery House” was coming along.

Jack also completed an 840 sq. foot garage and shop–a noisy, busy, happy place where he could hone his automotive skills.

He not only liked “fixing up” cars, but also loved making them go fast. In the mid-1960’s he started amateur sports car racing in an MGA. In 1973, in his 1960 Austin Healy Bug Eye Sprite he qualified for the Sports Car Club of America’s national finals at Road Atlanta, Georgia.

During the past 20 years he enjoyed Vintage Racing in his 1962 Lotus 7, in San Diego;

Monterey (Laguna Seca); Portland, Oregon; and Kent, Washington, to name a few.

For over 20 years, Jack, an avid snow skier, was active in the Santa Rosa Ski Club, where he and Muriel met many friends, and enjoyed ski trips to Alaska, Canada, Utah, Colorado and beyond. A high point was in February, 2020, at the age of 80, when he qualified to ski free at Alta Ski Area, Utah. Ski Club members were, of course, there to celebrate. His last trip to the Tahoe area was December 2022, where he skied and watched his grandchildren learning to ski.

Claiming to not be a “joiner,” Jack also joined the Petaluma Valley Athletic Club to play tennis and meet another wonderful group of friends. After the closure of PVAC, tennis moved to Magnolia Park, Rohnert Park, where, until this past March, he and “the guys” met up for weekly matches and camaraderie.

Among his many skills, was that of making wonderful travel plans–his very own travel agent. During retirement he and Muriel traveled to Canada, Mexico, much of the U.S., as well as Europe. Possibly his favorite trip , was a cruise from Athens, through the Greek Isles to Malta on a 5-masted windjammer.

Jack will be missed by friends, family and his wife of almost 48 years. It was an amazing, challenging and fun journey.

A Remembrance Celebration will be held in mid-October. Please contact a family member for details.

Ray Tilton was doing some tidying up in his 400-square-foot downtown Santa Rosa apartment last spring when he realized he had an inordinate amount of socks.

It was more than a collection. He was hoarding.

And he knew why.

Tilton, now 59, had spent about two years in his mid-20s living on the streets in San Francisco.

Sometimes he’d crash with someone, anyone. Sometimes he’d rent a room by the night. Sometimes he slept on the street.

If he couldn’t find an alternative, he “showered” in a car wash.

He came to understand the value of a decent pair of clean socks.

And he knew that once socks get wet, there’s no way to dry them. Conditions like trench foot and infections can take hold.

Foot care is a serious health issue on the street.

“Just having clean, dry socks for your feet was always such a struggle. I think most people take it for granted,” he said.

He never really got over that feeling, so he found himself hoarding socks until very recently, even though he’s been housed for decades.

“I had probably a good couple hundred pairs,” he said.

But last spring, something changed.

“I don’t even know what prompted it but something just told me, you know what, I should just take a bag when I go out and give out these socks,” he said.

Tilton, who lives in downtown Santa Rosa, is a regular walker. He can walk for miles. He decided to use his walks as a way to distribute all of his new socks.

“People were so grateful, and it was just this epiphany — ‘Oh my god, of course, I know how that felt,’” he said.

It didn’t take long for Tilton to give away almost every pair from his own collection, so he started asking friends to chip in.

He posted his plan on a Facebook page. He described his regular walks before which he’d load up a reusable grocery bag with bundled socks.

He’d change routes, walking for miles, greeting people through closed tent doors or behind zipped up sleeping bags.

“The Joe Rodota Trail is heartbreaking,” he said. “I go all of the way out to FoodMaxx. I walk that far when I’m well enough.”

Sonoma County officials on Tuesday removed an encampment on the Joe Rodota Trail that had grown to approximately 30 unhoused people between Hampton Way and Dutton Avenue.

Those sweeps, Tilton said, are heartbreaking and can make it hard for him to find his “regulars.”

But he walks on.

Tilton, who was diagnosed with HIV/AIDS four decades ago, is six years removed from having throat cancer. And two bouts of COVID-19 have lately left him more tired than usual.

The bright green reusable grocery bags he uses to carry the sock bundles around can feel heavier as he walks. He sits to rest often.

But he hasn’t stopped, and by his tally, has handed out about 2,000 pairs of socks since June.

“I’m doing it, weather permitting, three or four days a week now,” he said. “So I’m reaching over 100 people a week now, which is pretty amazing when you think about it.”

When this project began, Tilton, a prodigious lifelong fundraiser and networker for all manner of charities and nonprofits, sent out the call to his contacts. Might anyone support his latest gig?

He was overwhelmed by the response.

Boxes of socks, sealed with Amazon packing tape, showed up outside of his sixth-floor apartment.

Gift cards arrived. Venmo donations showed up on his account.

“In less than two months, I had enough socks to last the year,” he said.

He’s mapped out the number of socks he needs to distribute weekly to cover the maximum number of folks on the street but also not wear out his generous supporters.

A friend has started a similar effort in the East Bay.

Tilton keeps donors and backers updated on a Facebook page he created under the moniker “Life Socks/Socks = Life.”

It’s the second iteration. He said he lost the first one in some kind of glitch.

But make no mistake, Ray Tilton knows what he’s doing.

Behind the chest-high stacks of boxes in his hallway hang frame after frame of certificates and awards and commendations.

From the California Assembly. From the California Senate. And also “The 40th Royal House & the Majestic Dove Court of Peace, Love, & Integration.”

There is a certificate from the San Francisco Board of Supervisors declaring Sept. 22, 2002, “Ray Tilton Day in San Francisco”:

“Whereas Ray Tilton has contributed more than 15 years of community service and activism … Whereas Ray Tilton has served on numerous boards and committees including SMMILE, Castro Street Fair, AIDS Emergency Fund … Whereas Ray Tilton is a prodigious fundraiser, raising money for such charities as … Positive Resource Center, Camp Sunburst, LYRIC, Human Rights Campaign Fund and Gay Softball Teams …”

Steve was 69 years old. Steve leaves his dog, Pearl; children Alexis, Katherine and Rosalind; and his grandchildren Levi, Solomon, Harper, Sonya, and Nora.
Steve was born on March 10, 1954 to Marilyn Proskauer Litzky and David Litzky in Brooklyn, New York and grew up with his older brother Rick in Roslyn Heights, New York. Steve’s passion for the outdoors began at a young age with aquariums full of fish and turtles. This developed into a deep love for all animals and resulted in his owning many dogs, fish, birds and horses throughout his life. Taking care of animals brought him great happiness and many believe that he liked them more than other people. He later trained for horse cutting competitions and won a non-professional seasonal title with the Vintage Cutting Horse Association.
Steve moved to California in the mid-1970s. He always wanted to be surrounded by “California girls,” so he got married and had three daughters. Steve worked as a handyman, owned a plumbing business in San Francisco, became an HVAC technician and eventually an electrician.
Amy Brown of the popular Marla Bakery in Windsor has announced that her shop will take over the former Miracle Plum space at 208 Davis St. at Railroad Square in Santa Rosa.

Brown and her partner Joe Wolf sold baked goods at Miracle Plum between October and December 2022 before the wine and grocery store closed permanently in January. They hope to reopen the space as a bakery and cafe in early May.

“Gwen and Sallie (the owners of Miracle Plum) were the main reason we thought we could even open a bakery here in Sonoma County. They’ve always been an inspiration and we’ve always loved the space,” Brown said.

Brown and Wolf were San Francisco bakery favorites before moving to Santa Rosa in 2019. In 2020 they opened the production bakery in Windsor where they sell homemade bagels, cakes and bread.

Marla also offers special dishes and seasonal meals that can be announced on her Instagram page (@marla_sr) and pre-ordered through her website (marlabakery.com). Upcoming specials include Fried Chicken (March 11). Past meals have included a Valentine’s Day picnic for two and sufganiyot (donuts) for Hanukkah.

The production kitchen will remain in Windsor, but the new location will also offer sandwiches and salads for lunch. Brown hopes to add Sunday Suppers this summer.

“It’s always scary opening a brick and mortar store, but we’ve wanted one since we moved here,” Brown said.

“The place has good bones, good light and it feels like home there,” she added.

Stay tuned for more details on the upcoming Santa Rosa Bakery and Cafe. Marla’s Rolling Window in Windsor is open Thursdays from 10am to 1pm and Saturdays from 9am to 1pm. 399 Business Park Court, Windsor.

SAN FRANCISCO (KGO) — A 2-alarm fire in San Francisco’s Western Addition neighborhood left seven people injured and 18 displaced Friday morning, fire officials said.

Before firefighters had even arrived, teachers and students from Rosa Parks Elementary watched as smoke was coming out of the residential building.

The schoolyard is right behind the apartment complex.

“I yelled for my amazing co-workers to clear the yard and move the kids away from the fire,” said Cicily Ina-Lee a teacher who, along with her colleague Vincent Reyes, ran toward the apartments.

Both teachers pulled down the fire escape ladders. Reyes went inside to rescue residents.

“I went inside the building here when the fire first started. I saw the fire it was pretty heavy on the roof and that’s when I saw the last person hopefully come out of the building,” Reyes explained.

If you’re on the ABC7 News app, click here to watch live

One of the residents, who did not want to give us her name, described the teachers’ efforts. “And they were screaming and knocking and calling and trying to get us out and when the doors opened they went in and rescued the old people. They were fantastic,” the resident said. She managed to take her two parakeets with her.

Josh Gant was walking in the area when he saw some of the other victims being taken away.

“They were bringing one lady out, she was burnt really badly on her face and hands. Then they brought another lady out, she had smoke all over her and they brought another lady out, smoke all over her, and they were all like 80 years old, I guess,” added Gant.

Eighteen people were displaced in what exhausted firefighters described as a fast-moving blaze. It was a rescue effort aided by two teachers who thought of their neighbors first.

“We’re teachers, so we care about other people. Hopefully anybody would do the same things,” said Reyes.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

SAN FRANCISCO (CBS SF) — A former IRS agent and current tax expert from Southern California was arrested last week and accused of operating a pyramid scheme that defrauded an elderly Santa Rosa woman of more than $1 million over seven years.

On Monday, Santa Rosa Police identified the suspect as Elana Cohen-Roth, 77, of Marina Del Rey. Police said Cohen-Roth’s Ponzi scheme consisted of making interest payments to her investors/victims while incoming “investment” funds were used to support her lavish lifestyle.

CONTINUE READING: CHP: Police activity is closing westbound I-80 on the Carquinez Bridge

The victim first reported the alleged fraud in December 2020, telling police that she had entrusted a significant amount of money to an acquaintance to invest on her behalf. The woman told police she met the suspect through a mutual friend in 2012.

In January 2021, police said the department’s Property Crimes Unit had obtained search warrants for the Marina Del Rey home of Elana Cohen-Roth, 77, as well as her employer’s Los Angeles office, and confiscated boxes of financial documents and correspondence. As of Monday evening, the tax law firm listed Mather Anderson Cohen-Roth on a page of its website as a registered agent and tax filing practitioner with 20 years of IRS experience, including tax inspectors, field staff and appellate officers. To update: The website has since been removed.

In an email to CBS News San Francisco, Mather Anderson said, “Elana is not and never was an employee of Mather Anderson. She is involved in certain IRS cases for the accounting services firm. She also rents space from the company. This matter has nothing to do with any of the company’s customers.” Police have not charged Mather Anderson with any wrongdoing.

More than 12 months after the initial search warrants, detectives served additional search warrants, combed through additional documents and electronic communications, and interviewed additional victims, police said. Detectives also checked bank accounts and thousands of transactions over several years for the victim and suspect.

According to police, the victim had lost more than $1 million to Cohen-Roth over a seven-year period. The victim told police she believed she was investing in lucrative, high-yield opportunities. When she ran out of funds to invest and asked for her investments, the suspect’s behavior and communications raised the victim’s suspicions, police said.

Detectives confirmed their suspicions and learned that the victim had lost more than $1 million to the suspect over a seven-year period. The victim believed she was investing in lucrative, high-yield investment opportunities, but police said when the victim ran out of funds to invest and asked for her investments to be liquidated, the suspect’s behavior and communications raised suspicions.

On January 18, Santa Rosa Police officers, assisted by Los Angeles police officers, arrested Cohen-Roth at her home in Marina Del Rey and ordered her to prison on 22 counts of financial elder abuse and three counts of money laundering LA Metropolitan Detention Center. She was due to be transferred to the Sonoma County Jail this week.

Santa Rosa Police said detectives believe there are other victims of Cohen-Roth’s pyramid scheme in California who have also committed significant funds to high-yield investments. Police urged anyone who believes they may be a victim to contact their local jurisdiction. Potential Sonoma County victims were asked to contact SRPD Property Crimes Detective Jeff Woods at JRWoods@srcity.org.

SANTA ROSA (CBS SF) – A broken HVAC heater on the roof filled a school in Santa Rosa with carbon monoxide fumes Thursday morning, making students sick and forcing the building to be evacuated, authorities said.

According to the Santa Rosa Fire Department, the crews were dispatched to Bridge Church at 301 Fulton Road at 10:26 a.m.

CONTINUE READING: The state health department says all fully vaccinated adults should receive a booster vaccination

Arriving firefighters found an orderly evacuation in the two-story building that houses both the church and the Grace Christian Academy.

Students and teachers at the school informed the fire department that there was an odor in the building. Numerous students and several staff complained of symptoms consistent with exposure to carbon monoxide.

Firefighters used a 4-gas monitor to determine the presence of carbon monoxide in several classrooms and hallways in the building.

A total of 12 students and two staff members complained of symptoms related to carbon monoxide exposure, were treated, and were released at the scene.

Upon further investigation by firefighters and PG&E crews, it was found that the source of the carbon monoxide was an HVAC unit on the school roof that provides heat to several classrooms.

The HVAC unit was covered with tarpaulin due to a water leak during the recent rain. When the HVAC unit was turned on to provide heat, the tarpaulin was preventing the clean air from circulating properly.

After the tarpaulin was removed, the HVAC unit was working properly. The rest of the HVAC units on the roof have been tested and found to be correct.

SONOMA COUNTY (CBS SF) – Santa Rosa police said Wednesday a mountain lion was found and captured after being sedated by wildlife experts outside a home in the Rincon Valley on Tuesday evening.

On Wednesday afternoon, the Santa Rosa Police Department posted information on their social media accounts, as well as photos of the mountain lion spotted late Tuesday.

At around 10 p.m., officials in the St. Francis Road and De Soto Drive area called for reports of a mountain lion sighting. When the officers arrived on site, they found a young mountain lion in the front yard of a residential building.

The mountain lion refused to move or leave the area despite several patrol cars glowing lights and making noise, police said. The mountain eventually began to move slowly but appeared to be injured or sick.

Officers stayed on site for nearly three hours while waiting for wildlife resources, during which time the mountain lion moved into the neighboring yard.

Police worked with local wildlife experts from several nonprofits – Sonoma Wildlife Rescue and True Wild – and an additional veterinarian, all of whom responded to the scene – as well as fish and wildlife officials. A tranquilizer dart was used by veterinarians to calm the mountain lion.

Experts from True Wild and Sonoma Wildlife Rescue took the mountain lion to a local wildlife sanctuary for observation. They said the mountain lion was a very young man, weighing about 45 pounds. It showed no obvious signs of injury or illness.

Wildlife experts planned to watch the mountain lion and conduct medical tests before determining the best course of action for the animal. The mountain lion has been in her care since Wednesday morning, he is doing well and is doing better. No additional information was available about the mountain lion’s potential medical problems.

Mountain lion sightings in the Bay Area have increased in recent months. Just last week, a wayward mountain lion instigated a lockdown in two Rohnert Park middle schools before being drugged and removed from the area.

Mountain lions have been caught in the shadow of surveillance cameras in Millbrae. A handful of residents in Oakland Hills and Piedmont said they saw mutilated deer carcasses in their neighborhood. One wildcat was even caught in a tree in San Francisco’s Bernal Heights neighborhood and transported to the Oakland Zoo, while another broke into a San Bruno home full of wildlife trophies.

More than half of the state is Mountain Lion Territory, and it’s not uncommon for them to show up in unexpected places, according to officials with the California Department of Fish and Wildlife.

The species usually migrates during the dry season in search of plenty of food and water, but it could travel further than usual as drought conditions increase and deer population declines, department spokesman Ken Paglia said.

“Be aware that we share the state with other wildlife, like mountain lions or bears, they are nearby,” said Paglia. “While they can be potentially dangerous, they are usually in the city looking for food resources and not there to harm us.”

Despite recent sightings, it is rare for a mountain lion to be attacked.

“We want to make sure the public is safe, but we also want the animal to live its life in its own habitat. That is probably the best solution, ”said Paglia.

SANTA ROSA (CBS SF / BCN) – Residents of 95 homes and a four-unit apartment building in the Bennett Valley neighborhood of Santa Rosa were evacuated Sunday afternoon due to flooding, city officials said.

The fire department went door-to-door to alert homeowners in Neotomas Avenue and Tachevah Drive, Brookhaven Drive, Tuscan Drive, and the Washoe Court area, said Adriane Mertens, Santa Rosa Public Information Officer.

The city received multiple reports of flooding, fallen trees and power lines early Sunday afternoon, according to the Santa Rosa Fire Department.

“We have several dozen homes in the process of being evacuated, with rapid water rescue teams as well as our high-profile wildland fire engines pulling door to door to get people out of harm’s way as the water continues to rise in the neighborhood,” said Assistant Fire Marshal Paul Lowenthal .

Officials asked residents in the area to remove their belongings from the ground floor and garage due to the rising water. All residents in low areas were encouraged to do the same.

During the evacuation, residents of two houses needed help and the city called services to help them. City buses were also dispatched to help the evacuees.

The city is working to lower the flood. Debris will be removed from the drainage areas and drains will be cleared so the water can flow properly, Mertens said.

Northeast of Santa Rosa, a vehicle drove through a flooded Slusser Road north of River Road and south of Mark West Creek and was handicapped. The California Highway Patrol said the public works workers blocked the road at the time, but the driver drove around the workers and got stuck.
