Kimberly Tucker (right), SFDPH nurse, gives Sheryl Davis, Human Rights Commision director (left) the Johnson and Johnson COVID-19 vaccine at a vaccine clinic on March 16, 2021 in San Francisco.

Lea Suzuki/The Chronicle

San Francisco will require all city contractors who work alongside employees on a regular basis in city-run facilities to get vaccinated under a new order issued by Mayor London Breed Friday.

The order follows the city’s existing vaccine mandate for its 35,000 city employees, addressing the city’s extensive contracting system, and reflects similar federal mandates for contractors.

Contractors who qualify will have to be fully vaccinated — meaning 14 days have passed since their second vaccine shot — by Dec. 31. The city will require contractors to follow the policy under all new contracts that start Jan. 1.

Article continues below this ad

The city has thousands of contractors, but not all will fall under the mandate. Exactly which contractors will have to get shots isn’t yet clear — the City Administrator will release specifics on Oct. 15 — but it’s intended to target someone such as a nonprofit worker at a work station alongside city employees instead of a repairman fixing an appliance.

If a contractor who falls under the order doesn’t get vaccinated, their employer could remove them from the workplace and replace them with a vaccinated employee. But if the employer refuses to comply with the order, the city could terminate the organization’s contract.

“Our vaccine mandate for City employees has always been about protecting the public we serve and protecting our workforce,” Breed said in a statement. “By extending the mandate to contractors who work alongside our City workers, we are continuing to do everything we can to keep our City workforce strong and healthy.”

As of Wednesday, 1,705 city employees — less than 5% of the workforce — were unvaccinated, and 364 had not reported their vaccination status. That number dropped from 2,706 unvaccinated and 939 unreported on Sept. 23. Those who don’t comply by the deadline of Nov. 1 could lose their jobs.

Article continues below this ad

Human Resources Director Carol Isen said she was pleased with the high vaccination rate among employees and that mandating the same for contractors who regularly work alongside them was “the right thing to do.”

Contractors will be able to get religious and medical exemptions. The city couldn’t provide a number of how many contractors it has total, and doesn’t know how many are already vaccinated.

Some contractors who work in high-risk settings — such as hospitals, homeless shelters and nursing homes — already had to get their shots by Sept. 30 along with city workers in those facilities.

While some of the city’s powerful municipal unions, including those that represent firefighters, police and sheriff’s deputies, have opposed the citywide employee vaccine mandate, not all contractors are unionized, so any protest to the mandate could be more muted.

GREAT BARRINGTON, Mass. (WWLP) – The low temperatures overnight into Friday morning will be in the low to mid-40s and some spots in the Berkshires may get into the upper 30s!

The Great Barrington Fire Department is reminding homeowners of preparations to take as thermostats are kicking on the heat.

Fall’s chill sets in, New England’s temperature drop

7 Day Forecast

One of the most important things in our area is making sure your chimney is clean and in good shape. We strongly encourage leaving the roof climbing to the professionals and Santa Claus – hire a professional chimney sweep to clean and inspect your chimney.

Check your Heating System- Before it gets really cold—early October is the ideal time—turn on your heating unit to ensure it is working properly. Your unit has been sitting dormant for about 6 months, so you’ll want to make sure everything is in proper working order before you really need it. Especially if you have oil, we recommend having a professional HVAC tech clean and service your equipment. It will burn better and more efficient. Make sure you have a working CO detector on every level of your home including the basement. It will – without a doubt – save your life.

Perform a DIY home inspection, then break out the leaf blower and rake! Something as simple as a pile of leaves can be the catalyst for a fire. Take a couple of hours, and clean your gutters, check your downspouts, and remove all leaves and debris from the perimeter of your space. Make sure to clean them out from under decks and porches.

Never park your vehicle over a pile of leaves. The heat emitted from your car can ignite the leaves, destroying your vehicle and all things around it. Certainly not a good way to end the day.

After every load of laundry, always clean the lint screen. While the chimney sweep is there, have them clean your dryer vent, at minimum clean it yourself.

Every month, test your smoke detectors. Doing it more than twice a year that you change the batteries is a good practice.

If you plan to use electric heaters, make sure that they are in perfect shape. Consider replacing them with a more efficient model. Make sure that the cords are in good shape and not showing any sign of wear and always plugged directly into the outlet and not an extension cord.

When is the first day of fall 2023?

The first day of fall is this Saturday, September 23rd, also known as the autumn equinox. The clocks roll back one hour at 2 a.m. on November 5th. Use that extra hour to prepare your home or business for a fire-safe fall and winter season.

SAN MATEO (CBS SF) – A band of intense rains rolled across the San Francisco peninsula Wednesday morning, triggering a National Weather Service flood alert as runoff from the saturated hills jammed into streets and flowed into creeks and creeks.

Forecasters said the recommendation would stay in place until at least 1 p.m.

“At 9:55 am, the Doppler radar showed heavy rain moving in the direction of the San Mateo Coast,” the weather service said in its statement. “This will lead to flooding in cities and small streams.”

Some places flooding will occur, forecasters said, including San Francisco, Daly City, San Mateo, Redwood City, South San Francisco, San Bruno, Pacifica, Burlingame, Half Moon Bay, and Hillsborough.

Sudden floods have already proven fatal during the current storm.

The San Mateo County coroner office on Monday identified the couple who were found dead in a flooded vehicle in a flooded underpass in Millbrae during last week’s storm.

The authorities also confirmed that the couple were married. The couple tragically died last Thursday in floods during the storm that flooded the Bay Area with rain.

A spokesman for the San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office said firefighters had to respond to reports of flooding on Hemlock Ave at around 5:45 a.m. and E. Hillcrest Blvd. reacted. in Millbrae, where E. Hillcrest goes under Caltrain Railway.

A pilot program scheduled to begin in May will guarantee more than 100 San Francisco artists $ 1,000 per month for six months after Stockton, Oakland and Marin Counties made similar efforts to help struggling residents during the pandemic support.

The Guaranteed Income Program, announced by Mayor London Breed on Thursday March 25th, is accepting applications from now until April 15th through the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts website.

“This program is one of several guaranteed income pilots we’re developing in San Francisco,” Breed told The Chronicle Recovery.

YBCA will administer the program and use a partially computerized system to determine eligibility to select 130 local artists, with the process being randomized in the later stages, said Deborah Cullinan, CEO of YBCA.

Deborah Cullinan, director of the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, will help manage the funds under the new pilot program. Photo: Michael Short / Die Chronik

Qualifications for the program include being a San Francisco resident and being an artist “whose artistic practice is rooted in a historically marginalized community” which, according to Cullinan, does not exclude anyone from any cultural or racial group, but rather underrepresented artists Encourage communities should apply.

Artists are defined as “someone who actively engages with the community through music, dance, creative writing, visual arts, performance art, installation, photography, theater or film,” according to the program’s website.

Teaching artists and art educators as well as “culturally influenced craftsmen and doers” can also apply.

Applicants must have income below certain income limits to qualify: For a single person household, the income limit is $ 60,900; for a two-person household, the combined limit is $ 69,600. These income limits were determined by researching the best practices of other guaranteed income programs across the country, including Stockton, where 125 residents were given $ 500 a month and showed improved quality of life, according to a study commissioned by the city.

“Ultimately, we want everyone in San Francisco to live healthy, happy, and fulfilling lives without worrying about how to pay rent or get food on the table,” said Breed. “I am committed to making San Francisco a fairer, more just, and prosperous city, and we are investigating this guaranteed income model to see if it can help us achieve these goals.”

The pilot program is a collaboration between the Office of Racial Equity at the San Francisco Human Rights Commission, YBCA, Grants for the Arts, and the San Francisco Arts Commission. The program is funded from the Arts Impact Endowment, established by Proposition E, an action reallocated in 2018 1.5% of the existing 8% hotel tax on art and cultural services, i.e. money jointly managed by the Arts Commission and Grants for the Arts.

In developing the program, YBCA worked with organizations such as SOMA Pilipinas, the Asian Pacific Islander Cultural Center, the Chinese Culture Center of San Francisco, the Dance Mission Theater, the Galería de la Raza, the San Francisco Bay Area Theater Company, the African American Art and Culture. together Complex and members of the Racial Equity in the Arts Working Group. Bay Area poets Tongo Eisen-Martin and Kim Shuck also worked closely with the groups involved for the pilot project.

“We talked about different ways we can reach BIPOC (Black, Indigenous and People of Color), the disabled, LGBT, displaced and below the poverty line,” said Rodney Earl, co-founder of the San Francisco Bay Area Theater Company Jackson Jr “Many artists fall into these categories.”

The initiative is in line with the policy recommendations of the Economic Recovery Task Force of San Francisco, which the city issued in October 2020. The task force recommended identifying new sources of funding and revenue for the arts “to catalyze neighborhood recovery through the arts” and continue investing in color communities.

According to the San Francisco Arts Commission, the city’s creative sector generates $ 1.45 billion in economic activity annually and supports nearly 40,000 full-time jobs.

“COVID-19 has seriously threatened this important sector,” said Ralph Remington, the Commission’s director of cultural affairs, in a statement, “and the Guaranteed Income pilot is allowing artists to focus on their creative work through other programs like this one focus and support “the recovery of the industry as a whole.”

Cullinan said YBCA staff are prepared for a quick rollout despite an expected large influx of applications.

“We’ll be ready for direct deposits, writing checks to people, and working right away with people who don’t have a bank account,” she said.

After launching the pilot, YBCA plans to study the process and its impact on artists to see how the program can be better customized in the future.

“There are people living in difficult circumstances right now,” said Cullinan. “We want to act as quickly as possible to provide you with the resources you need.”

Apply: Visit www.ybca.org/guaranteed-income-pilot. The application deadline is April 15th.

SAN FRANCISCO – After 139 years at 807 Franklin Street in San Francisco, a two-story Victorian house has a new address.

The green house with large windows and a brown front door was loaded on giant dollies and moved to a location six blocks away on Sunday.

Spectators lined the sidewalks for photos as the structure – at a top speed of 1 km / h – rolled to 635 Fulton St.

The house’s trip has been in the pipeline for years, the San Francisco Chronicle reported.

Seasoned resident Phil Joy told the newspaper he needed to get permits from more than 15 city authorities.

Joy said this step was difficult in part because the first part of the journey is downhill.

“It’s always difficult for a house,” he said.

Parking meters were torn open, branches cut off and traffic signs laid along the route.

The owner of the six-bedroom home, San Francisco realtor Tim Brown, will pay about $ 400,000 in fees and moving expenses, according to Chronicle.

Officials from South San Francisco gave the go-ahead for a new Mercedes-Benz dealership to take over the former Orchard Supply Hardware building and a surrounding mall.

The South San Francisco Planning Commission unanimously approved the plan by Mercedes-Benz of San Francisco to convert the vacant hardware store and shopping center into a new showroom and service center on Thursday, July 2nd.

Board chairman Alan Wong admired the proposal and encouraged the dealership to work with residents of the nearby neighborhoods to ensure that their quality of life is not compromised.

“It is extremely important to consider local residents – their comments and concerns – and be good partners with the city,” said Wong.

The comment follows some letters and comments from neighbors who raised concerns about the potential for light or noise from the car dealership entering their home.

Ash Zaki, an executive at the auto company, made a pledge to be a good neighbor and assured those affected that the new facility would respect those living nearby.

“We’re very, very sensitive to the community,” he said.

To that end, he said the lights on the property would be turned away from homes and dimmed at night, and that salespeople would be instructed to direct test drives to Interstate 280 rather than residential streets. An upcoming discussion of signs will determine what advertising is allowed on the building.

According to the decision of the commission, the automobile manufacturer can press ahead with plans to redevelop the addresses from 2211 to 2245 Gellert Blvd. into a 30,000 square meter service facility and an 80,000 square meter showroom and sales center.

The site is expected to have 588 parking spaces to accommodate buyers, employees, vehicles visiting the service center, and sales inventory. The two-story showroom will also provide space for administration offices, a customer lounge and a parts warehouse.

Officials also put in place a comprehensive security plan for the website, designed to reassure commissioners that the risk of break-ins or car theft is limited.

Mercedes-Benz from San Francisco has been active in San Francisco since 1961 and is now planning to relocate its headquarters to the peninsula. Zaki said the company was drawn to the new location, largely because of its easy access to Interstate 280. However, he also noted that it was difficult to find such a large location and mentioned the challenges with operations connected in a big metropolis.

Orchard Supply Hardware’s South San Francisco site closed in 2018 when parent company Lowe’s announced that all 99 stores in California, Florida, and Oregon would be closing. San Mateo County’s locations included South San Francisco, Millbrae, Foster City, San Carlos, and Redwood City. Months later, the parent company also closed Lowe’s store at 720 Dubuque Ave. in South San Francisco as part of a company downsizing targeting underperforming locations.

The service bay will replace the Gellert marketplace and displace 11 restaurants and businesses. Since Mercedes-Benz announced its intention to take over the site, city officials have been working with dealers to identify new locations.

For his part, Commissioner Sam Shihadeh expressed confidence that the new auto and service center will be beneficial to South San Francisco.

“I think it’s an improvement for the neighborhood, for the region. And I think it should bring some revenue to the city too, ”he said.

Wong also said he looks forward to welcoming the company to his new community and reiterated his expectation that the company will work hard to integrate with its environment.

“As a new kid on the block, being a good neighbor is extremely important,” he said.

AC Transit is launching its “reNEW plan” and will be offering free masks and hand sanitisers on its buses in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

From an on-the-go AC Transit version to provide free basic personal protective equipment (PPE):

We have selected three-layer breathable masks that are non-toxic and non-irritating, with a soft nosepiece and elastic ear loop, making each mask easy to wear. We also exceed CDC guidelines by offering our drivers foaming hand sanitizer based on 70% ethyl alcohol. We’ve selected an FDA-approved hand sanitizer that kills 99.999% of germs in 15 seconds.

Face masks and hand sanitizer dispensers are posted on the modesty panel at the back door of most of our fleet, with the exception of the 60-foot articulated buses. In these buses, the drivers will find the dispensers near the middle doors. AC Transit drivers are advised that the blue side of the mask should be worn on the outside and that the nose clip should always point towards the top of the mask.

AC Transit follows VTA, which is also busy installing hand sanitizer and masks on trains and buses. Both agencies now exceed the recommendations of the “Blue Ribbon Transit Recovery Task Force” of the Metropolitan Transportation Commission, which theoretically established a safety basis for transit operators in the Bay Area. This document has been postponed by advocates just to offer comprehensive virus safety guidelines and even cut down on some government safety recommendations – for example, changing a 6-foot distancing policy to just three feet.

Proponents praised what AC Transit and VTA are doing, but said it should have been managed by the Metropolitan Transportation Commission as early as the spring, just before the pandemic began. “I just wish every transit agency in the Bay Area had the resources and essentials to put something like this together,” said Edie Irons of TransForm. Eisen and another proponent thought the free masks will help save lives on and off the bus as many key employees do not have access to fresh, high quality masks.

AC Transit representatives are now also busy installing plexiglass shields around the driver’s seat to protect them. They also performed air circulation tests and installed new high performance filter systems. Your counterintuitive conclusion: the best way to remove viruses from the air is to keep windows and hatches closed so the filters can operate at maximum efficiency.

Also from the AC transit declaration:

We have installed the highest level of filtration that the HVAC manufacturer allows on our buses. The new and improved HEPA filters (High Efficiency Particle Air) are rated MERV-7. This means that each bus removes particles as small as 3.0 microns. AC Transit’s safety experts have also carried out a series of tests to examine the airflow on board our buses. We tested the ventilation conditions with the windows open and closed, with and without air conditioning, and the use of the skylights. The test results clearly came to the conclusion that an open window disrupts indoor air quality. By keeping all windows closed, new air filters and the HVAC system create a strong air vacuum that pushes out old on-board air and circulates fresh, filtered air every minute and 20 seconds.

According to representatives of the authorities, the introduction of buses equipped with PPE dispensers will begin on Tuesday, “with the expected completion of the entire fleet by Friday, October 16, 2020”.
