Who wouldn’t want to run San Francisco’s famous Cliff House—even if you weren’t sure if you could call the 160-year-old restaurant on the Pacific Ocean the “Cliff House”?

Vacant since its longtime leaseholders left on New Year’s Eve 2020, the oceanfront restaurant at the western edge of the city is starting to accumulate wear and tear—although not nearly as bad as the storm-ravaged Camera Obscura just south of it and nowhere near to the degree of the Sutro Baths, those magnificent ruins immediately to the north.

In September, the National Park Service revealed that the agency had found someone willing to take it on, confirming that the restaurant lease would be for a period of 20 years. While the new concessionaire is nominally called Sutro Lands End Partners LLC, the mover and shaker behind it is attorney and Richmond District native Alex Leff, who has helped revive famous Southern California piers in Malibu, Oceanside and, soon, Huntington Beach.

A view of the former Cliff House above Ocean Beach in San Francisco is seen without its Art Deco sign on Saturday, Oct. 7, 2023. | Source: Astrid Kane/The Standard

Like wealthy-engineer-turned-mayor Adolph Sutro—who didn’t construct the first Cliff House but built the streetcar line that made it an accessible destination—Leff is from an immigrant family and wants to bring some vigor to the enterprise before it corrodes in the salt air. The Cliff House is where he had his first taste of alcohol, a sip of his mother’s gin fizz when he was far from old enough. As he describes it, restoring the building is an act of civic pride swaddled in nostalgia.

“The Cliff House is part of my heritage,” Leff told The Standard. “I would go there as a child. I would go there as an adult. I’m just so honored to have a chance to bring it back to life for San Franciscans.”

Notably, it’s not a single restaurant. The prior iteration had the upscale Bistro at the Cliff House as well as the more casual Sutro’s at the Cliff House, plus the lessee is responsible for an event space and a retail space as well as a cafe in the Lands End Lookout, an entirely separate building hundreds of yards away.

<img alt="" src="data:image/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAIAAAAAAAP///yH5BAEAAAAALAAAAAABAAEAAAIBRAA7" decoding="async" data-nimg="responsive" class="block undefined lazyloaded" style="position:absolute;top:0;left:0;bottom:0;right:0;box-sizing:border-box;padding:0;border:none;margin:auto;display:block;width:0;height:0;min-width:100%;max-width:100%;min-height:100%;max-height:100%;background-size:cover;background-position:0% 0%;filter:blur(20px);background-image:url("data:image/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==")"/>The current version of the Cliff House is actually the third, with the original building having burned down in the 1800s. | Source: Jane Tyska/East Bay Times/Getty Images<img alt="" src="data:image/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAIAAAAAAAP///yH5BAEAAAAALAAAAAABAAEAAAIBRAA7" decoding="async" data-nimg="responsive" class="block undefined lazyloaded" style="position:absolute;top:0;left:0;bottom:0;right:0;box-sizing:border-box;padding:0;border:none;margin:auto;display:block;width:0;height:0;min-width:100%;max-width:100%;min-height:100%;max-height:100%;background-size:cover;background-position:0% 0%;filter:blur(20px);background-image:url("data:image/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==")"/>Almost three years after the Hountalas family vacated, the building is gradually beginning to show signs of decay. | Source: Astrid Kane/The Standard

What Sutro Lands End Partners LLC can do with a landmarked property is somewhat limited, of course. Reached for comment, Golden Gate National Recreation Area spokesperson Julian Espinoza confirmed that the overall look and layout will remain the same.

“This is because of a combination of leasing terms and the historic nature of the building,” Espinoza said. “Potential renovations would generally have more to do with function than aesthetics, as the overall architectural style of the property must be maintained.”

Hoping not to install a pricey tourist trap in such a prime location, Leff has pledged to hold community meetings to solicit locals’ opinions on what should happen.

“We want to do something that has multiple offerings, multiple price points—things that someone can come with a family and enjoy and that will bring San Franciscans back there again,” he said.

<img alt="" src="data:image/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAIAAAAAAAP///yH5BAEAAAAALAAAAAABAAEAAAIBRAA7" decoding="async" data-nimg="responsive" class="block undefined lazyloaded" style="position:absolute;top:0;left:0;bottom:0;right:0;box-sizing:border-box;padding:0;border:none;margin:auto;display:block;width:0;height:0;min-width:100%;max-width:100%;min-height:100%;max-height:100%;background-size:cover;background-position:0% 0%;filter:blur(20px);background-image:url("data:image/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==")"/>The Neoclassical Cliff House is a familiar sight to anyone driving or walking along Point Lobos Avenue as it curves downhill toward San Francisco’s Ocean Beach. | Source: Justin Sullivan/Getty Images

The issue is that the Cliff House’s previous concessionaires, the Hountalas family, left on unhappy terms. Having run the restaurant complex since 1973—several years before the National Park Service bought it as part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area—they were unable to come to an agreement on a five-year extension to their 20-year lease that terminated in 2018, essentially operating without one for the final two years and bringing a decades-long run to an end.

“For most of it, it was very pleasant. We made a lot of friends and worked together very closely. That situation doesn’t exist now,” former co-proprietor Mary Hountalas told The Standard. “There has been nobody in the local GGNRA that really has any interest in what has happened in the Cliff House.”

Hountalas is a self-described “Summer of Love arrival” who’s lived here since 1967. Like Alex Leff, her husband, Dan, is a native of the Richmond District, and part of one of the many Greek families in the neighborhood. The nearby Louis’ Restaurant, just up Point Lobos Avenue from the Cliff House, is another example of a National Park Service-run entity that was long operated by Greek Americans and now lies vacant, a point that Mary Hountalas cites as evidence of the federal agency’s mismanagement.

“I’m sorry, the park service is notorious for neglect,” she said. “Poor Mr. Leff, the money he is going to have to put into the Cliff House building is because they allowed to let the place go for the last three years.”

<img alt="" src="data:image/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAIAAAAAAAP///yH5BAEAAAAALAAAAAABAAEAAAIBRAA7" decoding="async" data-nimg="responsive" class="block undefined lazyloaded" style="position:absolute;top:0;left:0;bottom:0;right:0;box-sizing:border-box;padding:0;border:none;margin:auto;display:block;width:0;height:0;min-width:100%;max-width:100%;min-height:100%;max-height:100%;background-size:cover;background-position:0% 0%;filter:blur(20px);background-image:url("data:image/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==")"/>This aerial view was shot by drone shortly before the restaurant closed for business on Dec. 31, 2020. | Source: Jane Tyska/East Bay Times/Getty Images<img alt="" src="data:image/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAIAAAAAAAP///yH5BAEAAAAALAAAAAABAAEAAAIBRAA7" decoding="async" data-nimg="responsive" class="block undefined lazyloaded" style="position:absolute;top:0;left:0;bottom:0;right:0;box-sizing:border-box;padding:0;border:none;margin:auto;display:block;width:0;height:0;min-width:100%;max-width:100%;min-height:100%;max-height:100%;background-size:cover;background-position:0% 0%;filter:blur(20px);background-image:url("data:image/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==")"/>The Cliff House has been a local landmark for more than 150 years. | Source: Jane Tyska/East Bay Times/Getty Images

A ventilation system the Hountalas’ installed is now severely rusting, she said. Same goes for many of the doors, as well as the interior electrical system. Irrespective of its mechanical condition, the interior of the 27,000-square-foot building, with two floors plus a mezzanine is likely to be modernized and reconfigured. San Francisco Chronicle critic Michael Bauer once compared it to a gymnasium, noting that a secondary dining room had more character than the main space.

Then there’s the matter of the five Cliff House trademarks and the all-caps, Art Deco-style rooftop signage that was removed the day the Hountalas vacated as crowds of onlookers watched. Hountlas confirmed that her family has possession of them all.

The controversial trademarking of the restaurant’s name was done “with the complete knowledge of park service personnel,” she said, after restaurants up and down the Pacific Coast began using the name and copying the menu. Hountalas disputes any allegations that banks hold claim to the copyrights as collateral for business loans, but says the family is open to negotiations about the use of the name Cliff House.

The Hountalases are, if anything, adamant that the Cliff House letters need to go back on the building. Mary Hountalas has never met Leff personally, but they’re in the “have your people call my people” phase.

“We had an intermediary who was having discussions with him prior to him being awarded the lease,” she said.

Leff confirmed to The Standard on Thursday that he’s been in communication with the Hountalases attorney, having spoken four or five times, although he would not discuss the terms of their negotiation over the Cliff House name. But the property is firmly in his possession.

“I have the keys,” he said. “We have contractors and people walking through.”

As the San Francisco Chronicle reported, the clock is ticking. Leff’s first year of rent is free, but he’ll owe $235,000 for the second, a number that will more than double, to $499,000 two years later. Leff expects to welcome the public to some parts of the complex before the entire operation is up and running.

“We’re trying to activate spaces on the perimeter of the building, which may then allow the public to enjoy the property while we’re still working on the interior,” he said. “We hope sometime in 2024.”

What that property will be called, though, is still up in the salty air.

<img alt="" src="data:image/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAIAAAAAAAP///yH5BAEAAAAALAAAAAABAAEAAAIBRAA7" decoding="async" data-nimg="responsive" class="block undefined lazyloaded" style="position:absolute;top:0;left:0;bottom:0;right:0;box-sizing:border-box;padding:0;border:none;margin:auto;display:block;width:0;height:0;min-width:100%;max-width:100%;min-height:100%;max-height:100%;background-size:cover;background-position:0% 0%;filter:blur(20px);background-image:url("data:image/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==")"/>An exterior of back of former location of The Cliff House above Ocean Beach in San Francisco on Saturday, Oct. 7, 2023. | Source: Astrid Kane/The Standard

A legendary restaurant from Japan will soon be reborn in America.

Edomasa, a yakitori restaurant serving grilled, skewered chicken, first opened in 1924 in Tokyo but closed in 2022. A Bay Area-based Japanese American food company, EK Food Services, has announced plans to re-create the historic restaurant this fall in San Francisco’s Japantown.

“We brought the chef and the restaurant itself from Tokyo, Japan, to San Francisco,” Yuki Sakakibara, a director at EK Food Services, told The Standard.

The original, century-old counter from the old food stall will be part of the decor at the San Francisco location.

A historic photo shows the chef at Edomasa cooking the skewered chicken in Tokyo. | Source: Courtesy Edomasa

The upcoming restaurant is set to open in late September, Sakakibara said. EK Food Services also runs the popular Bay Area ramen chain Marufuku Ramen.

Yakitori is a type of Japanese cooking that skewers chicken on bamboo or steel and grills it over charcoal fires. The seasoning is typically salty or salty-sweet.

The goal of moving Edomasa to San Francisco is “to create a beloved restaurant loved by the local community,” the restaurant’s website states.

According to Japanese-language media, Edomasa closed in September 2022 in Tokyo amid a controversy about the health risks of consuming raw chicken. Sakakibara explained that Edomasa’s signature dish, which contains raw chicken, was very popular and they have a special technique to ensure diners’ safety.

Further, he added, they never received any complaints about food poisoning. However, other restaurants started to copy the dish, which led to health issues and controversy, prompting Edomasa to close. Sakakibara said the San Francisco menu will not have the raw chicken dish.

SAN FRANCISCO (KGO) — Intense storms that battered the San Francisco Bay Area for more than a week caused flooding, downed trees and power outages. After another weekend of rain and strong winds, some dry days are ahead this week, but another storm is expected Wednesday. Even with a break in the rain for now, the region is still facing residual effects as a result of the strong storm.

Jan. 16, 2023

11 p.m.
People head outside to enjoy the sunshine for 1st time in weeks as storm cleanup continues

After a seemingly never-ending stretch of storms, the sunshine is finally back in the Bay Area.

In San Francisco, a still soaked Crissy Field was alive with people.

“We didn’t have to bring our umbrella. We just kind of walked out of the house and didn’t have to worry about getting drenched,” said Kate Costello.

But it wasn’t bright skies for everyone. Earlier in the day, The Golden Gate National Recreation Area tweeted a photo of an old military structure on the beach of Fort Funston after it slid down a nearby bluff.

“I believe that what rolled out of the hill this morning was a piece of the rifle range, apparently dated to the 1930s,” said retired National Park Service Curator, John Martini.

The structure tumbled off the cliff around 10 a.m. Monday, likely due to the saturated land according to park officials.

Heads up, foodies: I’m now sending alerts every time I publish a story. Sign up for texts from me here. Thanks to those of you who’ve already subscribed and offered your thoughts!

… While many festivals and local events are returning this year, one beloved local institution’s future is uncertain. The Gilroy Garlic Festival Board announced Friday that the annual festival has been canceled indefinitely. The organization cited lingering concerns from the pandemic and prohibitively expensive insurance required by the city of Gilroy, to the tune of $1 million. The festival is normally held over the last weekend in July to celebrate the stinking rose in all its delicious iterations, from classics like garlic fries to unconventional creations like garlic ice cream. This is a sad end to an event that families have cherished for more than 40 years and has earned the small farm community of Gilroy international recognition. We all remember the tragic mass shooting at the 2019 festival, when a 19-year-old Gilroy native killed three people and wounded 17 others before turning the gun on himself. It would be extremely difficult for an event to hold the same place in the community’s heart after such horror, but after canceling the festival in 2020, the organizers gamely held a drive-through version over three weekends in July 2021.

“The festival is part of our heritage. Now we must ensure that it is part of our future,” the organizers said in the announcement. While they believe that the festival will never be a massive event, they hope to create a smaller, more intimate local iteration. Several companion fundraisers will be held throughout the summer, including a golf tournament, a concert at Clos La Chance Winery and a farm-to-table dinner. Visit gilroygarlicfestivalassociation.com for more information…

The Felton and Scotts Valley farmers markets reopen the first week of May.

(Kevin Painchaud / Lookout Santa Cruz)

… Next week, we welcome back the seasonal Felton and Scotts Valley farmers markets. Located off of Highway 9 in downtown Felton, the Felton farmers market reopens a week from Tuesday, and will run every Tuesday from 1 pm to 6 pm through October. In addition to organic fruits and vegetables, fresh flowers, artisanal bread, seafood, meat, eggs and other staple foods, the market has expanded its food truck rotation with an emphasis on highlighting cultural, hard-to-find foods. Scrumptious Fish & Chips will be there every week, and Dos Hermanos Pupuseria, Mattia Pizza Truck and Rogue Pye will rotate.

The Scotts Valley farmers market starts up again next Saturday, May 7, from 9 am to 1 pm, and will run every Saturday morning through Thanksgiving. Find it at its new home, off Scotts Valley Drive in the Boys & Girls Club parking lot. Visitors will find an abundant selection from regional farms and food businesses, and regular pop-ups by Chicken Foot and Dos Hermanos Pupuseria. New this year, Watsonville-based Hidden Fortress Coffee will sell breakfast favorites like French toast, pancakes, bacon and sausage in addition to its small-batch, organic roasted coffee and espresso.

Both markets will celebrate opening day with free strawberry shortcakes to visitors, made with fresh local strawberries and whipped cream on Beckmann’s Bakery shortbread. Doesn’t that sound like a sweet way to kick off summer? More info at santacruzfarmersmarket.org …

Phil’s Fish Market & Eatery will move from its location on Sandholdt Road in Moss Landing.

(Via Facebook)

… Concerned community members took to social media when it was revealed that Phil’s Fish Market & Eatery will be leaving its current location in Moss Landing. Fans feared that the beloved restaurant and fish market would be closing for good after news broke that the neighboring Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute is planning to expand and will demolish the restaurant in order to build a new two-story, 33,000-square-foot marine research facility in its spot on Sandholdt Road. But the reports of Phil’s demise were greatly exaggerated, with Phil DiGirolamo himself clearing the air. While it is true that the establishment is planning to move, “We will not be closing,” DiGirolamo insisted in a Facebook post. DiGirolamo and MBARI are working together to find another suitable location before the move, so no one has to say goodbye to Phil’s famous cioppino, clam chowder or crab cakes.

This might be appealing to only a small portion of readers, but if you, by chance, are looking for an easy and delicious way to prepare beets, I have a great recipe for you. I love beets when I eat them in restaurants, but until recently rarely prepared them at home because I couldn’t find a preparation that gave me the results I wanted – beets with a tangy, pickled flavor, free from their ruddy skin with a tender , rich texture – that was so easy. I finally found that recipe, and it’s so simple. To make it, wash your beets and trim off the stem end, then poach them in a mixture of one part vinegar with four parts water until you can pierce them easily all the way through. Poaching is a fancy way of saying to cook them in liquid at a low temperature. In this case, the beets should be submerged or nearly submerged in the vinegar/water mixture, and kept at a low simmer, covered with a lid, for about an hour. Feel free to mix up the type of vinegar and add some aromatics, depending on what you’re using them for. I used a cup of red wine vinegar and added a clove of crushed garlic, a palmful of peppercorns and a couple of bay leaves.

Once they’re done cooking and have cooled, you can slough the skin off with a paper towel. You will definitely make a mess – and beets stain, so be prepared. Chop them up and they’ll keep in a closed container in the fridge for a week, ready to liven up your office salad. I actually blended some into homemade tomato soup and it was surprisingly good. The sky’s the limit!

One of San Francisco’s cheesiest restaurants has found a new home and will reopen on Monday after being thought to be gone forever.

“Reopening Monday 24th January. We are pleased to announce that we will be reopening in a new location – 430 Columbus Ave,” the restaurant’s website said in a statement. “We look forward to serving you.”

The new location is just one block from Columbus from the previous location, in the space where Calzone’s Restaurant used to operate. Calzone’s was run by the same group of owners as the Rose.

Opened in 1991 in the heart of North Beach, The Stinking Rose — affectionately named for the ancient Roman term for garlic — soon became a bustling, eclectic spot on Columbus Ave.

“They season the garlic with food,” wrote the SF Examiner in a glowing review, which revealed the restaurant uses 1.5 tons of garlic a month. Inside, the world’s largest garlic braid meandered through the restaurant, and a mini mechanical garlic factory lined the walls.

Owners Jerry Dal Bozzo, who grew up in the neighborhood, and Dante Serafini became successful restaurateurs in the Bay Area in the ’90s, running Calzone’s, The Franciscan and Frankie’s at Pier 43 in Fisherman’s Wharf, The Dead Fish in Crockett, and Salito’s Crab House and Prime Rib in Sausalito next to their flagship on Columbus.

The restaurant was so successful that they opened a second Stinking Rose in Beverly Hills (this place appears to still be closed).

After almost 30 years in business, the North Beach location closed in March 2020, like almost every other San Francisco eatery. The outlook seemed bleak when Dal Bozzo put the house on the market in June last year. The reservation site OpenTable has even changed its status from “temporarily” to “permanently closed”. But after a change or heart, owners will move to the calzone’s space down the block.

“We treated it with garlic,” co-owner Jerry Dal Bozzo told the San Francisco Chronicle. “We brought some of the decor from the Stinking Rose, so it’s a different garlic restaurant… Hopefully people will like it.” (SFGATE and the San Francisco Chronicle are both owned by Hearst but operate independently)

Stinking Rose will reopen on January 24th at 12pm with a shorter menu. 430 Columbus Ave.

The sound of cable cars going up and down the roller coaster hills of San Francisco has not been heard since March 2020 when an on-site protection order closed the city at the start of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Clickety-Clack will be back in the first week of August.

San Francisco Mayor London Breed announced Tuesday that the cable cars will come out of hibernation in August for testing and operator training, and will operate on a near-normal schedule, according to the city.

Drivers don’t have to pay in August and are encouraged to provide feedback on customer service and help operators get used to picking up and dropping off people.

“This is an attempt at a ‘mock service’ that will run and stop the lines on which the cable cars are operating,” Eric Kato, a spokesman for the San Francisco Municipal Transportation System, said in a statement. “This bogus service will be irregular and not follow a specific schedule.”

From September the regular service is to return to the usual tariffs.

Breed stated at a news conference Tuesday morning that Muni officials said the cable cars wouldn’t be operational until the fall, and she and Muni boss Jeffrey Tumlin came up with this creative solution to get people back in cars before summer End, according to CBS News.

“At the beginning of August, the cable cars will be available to all drivers free of charge for the whole of August,” said Breed, according to CBS. “So let’s bring them back a little earlier, not as early as I would have liked, but early enough that you catch them at the end of summer, right before you send your child back to school when they open this fall, and it should better open this fall. “

A mask will be required on the cable cars, as the state and the district continue to require face coverings on public transport.

Minor leak required serious plumbing

– After a week of civil engineering work on sewer pipes, the Heaton Building on 13th Street and Park Street has reopened. Amstrdm Coffee House, Ambiance, Cendre Wine Tasting and two apartments on the upper floor had no water during the work in the alley west of the building.

A small leak left about an inch of water in the basement that required serious plumbing from Coast Construction. Amstrdm Coffee House closed for one week. Plumbers were still working in the wine tasting room on Friday.

With large bay windows stretching across the sidewalk, the 1910 Heaton Building looks more like San Francisco Architecture but creates interesting space for three small businesses. The owner realized that the plumbing would take more than a “patch” to solve the problem. It took a week but the problem that can be a hundred years old is finally resolved. All three stores and the two upstairs apartments are expected to be back to normal this weekend on 13th Street in downtown Paso Robles.

October 25, 2021

After serving as a shelter-in-place hotel during the COVID-19 pandemic, the Abigail Hotel will reopen as permanent accommodation

San Francisco, California – Mayor of London N. Breed and the Department of Homelessness and Supportive Housing (HSH) announced today that the city, in partnership with the Tenderloin Housing Clinic (THC), is reopening the Abigail Hotel as a Step Up Housing location. Abigail will offer 59 adult housing units successfully transitioning from Permanent Supportive Housing (PSH) to affordable housing with a more independent housing model.

“During the pandemic, San Francisco provided emergency shelters and shelter to thousands of people without shelter, and as we continue our city’s recovery we must do everything in our power to ensure that the same people have access to permanent shelter.” said Mayor Breed. “We know housing is the solution to homelessness, and the Abigail Hotel will provide permanent living space for people with a history of homelessness and access to supportive housing for those new to the streets.”

The Abigail Hotel was one of the first Shelter-In-Place (SIP) locations to open during the COVID-19 pandemic, protecting adolescents in transition (TAY). It was demobilized as a SIP location on June 30, 2021 in order to transition to its current status as a Step Up Housing location. All of the rooms at the Abigail are en-suite and the building has a spacious lobby and common room, as well as a state-of-the-art kitchen. The Tenderloin Housing Clinic will manage the site and provide case management services to the independent residents five days a week.

More information about the Tenderloin Housing Clinic can be found here: www.thclinic.org/

“It is exciting to see another of the SIP hotels continue to be part of the city’s long-term strategy to accommodate all of our residents,” said District 6 Supervisor Matt Haney. “The Abigail Hotel will provide better accommodation for those who have completed their permanent support housing and can live more independently. By providing more of these housing options for our city’s most vulnerable residents, we are creating a significant part of the framework that will help us finally get our homelessness crisis under control. “

“We are excited to convert the Abigail Hotel to improve housing,” said Shireen McSpadden, executive director of the San Francisco Department of Homelessness and Supportive Housing.

“As people start looking for accommodation, they are releasing urgently needed places in permanent support housing for vulnerable people who have needed their first home or the first home in a long time.”

“This opening marks the historic return of the Abigail Hotel to permanent housing for low-income San Franciscans,” said Randy Shaw, general manager of the Tenderloin Housing Clinic. “40 years ago, tenants fought to keep Abigail an affordable residential SRO. Thanks to Mayor Breed and HSH, their mission has now been accomplished.”

Step Up Housing, part of the city’s Homeless Response System, offers Permanent Supportive Housing (PSH) residents the opportunity to move from intensive supportive housing to a more independent life. By participating in the program, tenants make their PSH unit available to other homeless people. The city currently operates nearly 400 residential units for adults and families.

The reopening of the Abigail Hotel is part of Mayor Breed’s larger plan to tackle homelessness in San Francisco. Mayor Breed’s strategy includes her homelessness recovery plan, which will expand the city’s homeless response system and purchase or lease 1,500 new PSH units over the next two years, the largest one-off expansion in the city in 20 years.

Eight months after the Cliff House was finally closed and the signage removed from the historic room, the National Park Service announced its next plan for the building: the installation of a new restaurant by the end of 2022.

Valet parking announced Tuesday that it is canceling its application for qualifications for potential tenants for 2019 and is instead moving to a call for proposals for those interested in taking over the restaurant space.

The announcement comes as a relief to many after a widespread rumor spread that the 157-year-old room would be converted into an office building after the Cliff House closed in December 2020. The National Park Service, which owns the building, said it did not last year, but the announcement of a search for a new restaurant owner on Tuesday should put an end to that rumor.

In its announcement, Valet Parking set its schedule for the establishment of a new restaurant in the Cliff House building. The proposal process is slated for later this year, and if all goes well, the valet service expects a final selection by mid-2022 with a long-term lease from late 2022.

Park Service is also looking for someone to rent the space in the former Louis’ restaurant, the group confirmed to the San Francisco Chronicle. (SFGATE and the San Francisco Chronicle are both owned by Hearst, but operate independently.)

The Park Service did not specify the length of the new lease in its press release, but the lease negotiations were partly behind the closure of the Cliff House when it was run under Dan and Mary Hountalas. The Hountalases have operated the Cliff House since 1973, and when the previous 20-year concession expired in 2018, they were relocated to short-term concessions.

During the pandemic, the Hountalases offered brief to-go services for 10 weeks before deciding to temporarily close the restaurant in July. They later turned down an offer from Park Service for a three and a half year lease, ending the Hountalas era of the Cliff House.

The building’s new concessionaire will not only have plenty of space to fill, but will also face the difficult task of finding a new name for the building and restaurant – the Hountalases have entered the name Cliff House, which is why the Cliff House sign has been removed when the restaurant closed.
