A recent Facebook post sparked rumors that Recycled Records, an iconic Reno music store that has been in business for decades, was closing.

That’s not happening, but the longtime record store will be moving to a new location in the coming months.

We visited the store at 822 S. Virginia St. to speak and learn more with co-owners Eric Jacobson and Kyle Howell.

What actually happens?

Jacobson confirmed to RGJ that Recycled Records is moving south, but declined to give details of the new location until the lease is signed. Recycled Records must vacate the Midtown location by June 1, when the lease ends.

They said they were within days of closing the deal.

Why is Recycled Records moving?

Jacobson said the current rent at 822 S. Virginia St nearly doubled after the building was purchased by an unknown company — unknown because Jacobson and Howell, who have owned the business since 2019, were not notified of the new building owner .

The RGJ was unable to determine who bought the building because the property records viewed by the RGJ did not contain details of the most recent transaction.

A Facebook Marketplace post by Aleks Vetushko, who, according to LinkedIn, is a co-owner of San Francisco-based real estate investment firm West Egg Real Estate, is listing the Recycled Records location for about $7,000 a month in rent. According to a real estate website, Vetushko appears to be the contact for Civil Capital LLC, but he could not be reached to clarify the new ownership.

Jacobson stressed that the decision to relocate was not just motivated by cost.

“We could afford that, but we don’t want that. said Jacobson. “If we hadn’t found a good spot, we would have paid.”

guitarist/composer George Cotsirilos reconvenes the same wonderfully interactive quartet featured on his acclaimed 2018 release “Mostly in Blue” for his new album, “Refuge.” A superb showcase for his taut, blues-informed, harmonically challenging approach, “Refuge” finds Cotsirilos, pianist Keith Saundersbassist Robb Fisherand drums Ron Marabuto tackling the leader’s new compositions, all created during the pockets of pandemic isolation.

RICHMOND, Calif., April 18, 2022 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ — George Cotsirilos pushes into new frontiers with the May 20th release of “Refuge” (OA2). The guitarist and composer’s follow-up to his acclaimed 2018 album “Mostly in Blue” again features his quartet—pianist Keith Saundersbassist Robb Fisherand drummer Ron Marabuto—but repositions them both in pursuit of new challenges and, if anything, even more “in blue.”

Cotsirilos added piano to his longtime trio in 2018, hoping to express the denser harmonies he was hearing in his writing. The success of the experiment encouraged him to keep moving forward, creating a group of compositions that are more complex and more seasoned in the blues. (He comes by that seasoning honestly: Though based in the San Francisco Bay AreaCotsirilos was born and raised in Chicago.)

The lockdowns and isolation of the COVID-19 pandemic gave him opportunities to explore a variety of music and assimilate it into his own work. However, it also hampered his ability to workshop the new tunes with the band. “It became more and more difficult to try out the pieces, so it took a while to get them to a point where we were all happy with them,” Cotsirilos says. “But I was confident … that everything would come together.”

Indeed, come together it did. From the sumptuous melody and harmonies of “Refuge,” to the sly, sexy Latin groove of “Igualmente,” to the alluring intricacies of “Aftermath” and “Let’s Make a Break for It,” Refuge is every inch the work of an adept and highly attuned ensemble. It’s clear that the players are intimately familiar with not just the compositions, but the possibilities they offer.

While Cotsirilos is the album’s leader and composer, the quartet functions very much on a level playing field. The pieces require close interaction among all four musicians—the entirety of “A Faint Light” hinges on the pocket they create—and even the solos achieve their high caliber through the full band’s chemistry. Cotsirilos’s Byzantine line on “Planet Roxoid” succeeds by virtue of Saunders’s anticipating his every step, and the guitarist pays it forward with an equally empathic accompaniment of Fisher’s bass solo on “The Three Doves.”

Cotsirilos claims to receive inspiration from recordings of Beethoven’s cello sonatas—because, he says, they were written with an aim “for instruments to enhance each other.” His work with his quartet on “Refuge” leaves no doubt that this is so.

George Cotsirilos was born in Chicago in 1951. His passion for music was stimulated by an aunt and an uncle—the former was a classical music lover who encouraged him to play the violin; the latter was an early drummer who took him to hear Louis Armstrong. The renaissance of Chicago blues during his teenage years ensured that George grew devoted to the electric guitar.

In 1969, Cotsirilos enrolled at UC Berkeley. A sociology major, he briefly left school halfway through his studies to play guitar in a blues band. When he re-enrolled at Berkeleyhe separately became a student of Warren Nunes, a legendary guitarist in East Bay musical circles. Nunes brought Cotsirilos under the sway of jazz, learning about the great guitarists as well as the ideas and techniques of other instrumentalists like Miles Davis, John Coltraneand Chick Corea.

Even as he studied music more seriously—training on classical guitar through the San Francisco Conservatory of Music—Cotsirilos completed his sociology degree, then attained a law degree. He maintained a dual career for years working as a criminal defender and lecturer at Berkeley’s prestigious School of Law, while also performing alongside Pharoah Sanders, Etta Jamesrenowned drummer Eddie Marshalland Bay Area stalwarts Mel Martin other Mark Levin. He released his first solo album, “Silenciosa,” in 2003, followed by three trio albums with Fisher and Marabuto.

In 2017, around the same time he expanded his trio to a quartet (with Saunders on piano), Cotsirilos retired from the law profession and devoted himself full-time to music. “Refuge” is one of the beneficiaries of that decision—and so is the jazz audience.

ANAHEIM (AP) – Frankie Montas scored 10 in seven goalless innings and Oakland took advantage of some early bad decisions in Los Angeles in Starling Martes’ debut at the Athletics and defeated the Angels 4-0 on Thursday evening.

Marte, acquired in a trade this week by the Miami Marlins in exchange for left-handed Jesus Luzardo, walked 1 for 4 and scored in the first inning. The A’s scored three times with just one hit in the opening session.

Angel’s right-hander Dylan Bundy gave up three runs with just two hits but went four and hit a batter in 4 1/3 innings. Bundy (1-8) returned to rotation with Alex Cobb struggling with a blister on his right index finger.

LOS ANGELES (AP) – The first shipment of the COVID-19 vaccine has arrived in Los Angeles County. It broke a record for coronavirus hospitalizations this weekend, as San Francisco County’s highest number of COVID-19 cases since the pandemic began.

More than 30,000 confirmed coronavirus cases were reported nationwide on Sunday, bringing the total to 1,551,766 in California. Millions of Californians in the majority of the state call home.

In Los Angeles County, the most populous country in the country, more than 4,000 people have been hospitalized for COVID-19, according to data released Sunday afternoon. More than a fifth of hospital patients are in intensive care units.

With 3,850 patients in a hospital, the new numbers from the district break the previous record from the previous day and follow the trend that hospital admissions have increased almost daily since November 1st.

LA County Health Director Barbara Ferrer warned on Monday – when 2,988 hospitalizations took place – that the county could increase the statistic to 4,000 within two weeks. It happened in six days.

San Francisco County health officials reported 323 new cases on Saturday, the highest number of new coronavirus infections. San Francisco early emerged as a leader in the state’s response to the pandemic, but has since moved on to tackling its own cases.

Officials last week distributed self-test kits in the East San Jose neighborhood of San Jose, Silicon Valley, where 55% of the population are Latinos, and officials say many residents do not have easy access to test sites.

But for many, the vaccines are still out of reach. The priority will be that health workers are vaccinated first.

Governor Gavin Newsom tweeted that a group of medical experts convened by Western states met on Saturday to discuss the vaccine and confirm that it is safe for public use. Newsom said distribution could begin as early as Sunday.

Medical facilities at military bases in Alameda and San Diego will be among the first to receive vaccines, the US Department of Defense said earlier this month.
