Why the Eagles aren’t the favorite in the NFC

Dan Graziano explains why the 49ers are the betting favorite over the 49ers.

SANTA CLARA, Calif. — After another turbulent offseason filled with the usual staples like quarterback woes and injury updates, the San Francisco 49ers finally return to the field Monday for the NFL’s May bid, the one closest to actual training.

And while the answers to many of their remaining questions won’t be available for months, the Niners can start gathering more information before training camp begins in late July.

With that in mind, here’s a look at some of the most pressing issues facing the 49ers in opening organized team activities.

Who is in the middle?

No serious list of the 49ers’ problems can begin without discussing the quarterback. They believe that in Brock Purdy they have their quarterback for the short and long term, but they won’t have him for OTAs as he continues to recover from ulnar collateral ligament surgery in his right (throwing) elbow. Purdy appears to be on the right track and is expected to begin a throwing program in early June that will give the Niners a better idea of ​​the timeline for their return.

The Niners now have three signalers – Trey Lance, Sam Darnold and Brandon Allen – under contract. Coach Kyle Shanahan has said that Lance and Darnold will get first-team substitutes in the offseason program. That’s not necessarily indicative of a pecking order, but the 49ers want to create as much competition as possible between this duo rather than just reinstate Lance as a starter while Purdy recovers.

“We’re coming to training camp,” Shanahan said. “Hopefully we’ll get Brock back soon… You never know how much we’ll end up doing in the OTA sessions, but it’s been good to have two guys out there throwing.”

This is a particularly important off-season for Lance, who has been fully healed of the fractured right ankle he sustained in Week 2 last season and is even further away from the broken bone in his right index finger that slowed his development as a rookie . Despite ongoing trade speculation, general manager John Lynch has stated that he believes Lance will be a 49er in 2023. If that’s the case, it’s up to Lance to determine what his role will be while Darnold adjusts to a new offense.

“Trey knows exactly what the situation is,” Lynch said. “His mindset is all about competition and I think that’s exactly what his mindset should be. We’re thrilled with the position he’s put himself in with the work he’s put in this offseason to No. 1 get healthy, No. 2 get better over some things he was dying to improve on … We are thrilled with Trey’s ability to apply for a job.”

When does Nick Bosa get his big payday?

As usual, Bosa has spent his off-season in Florida training with his brother Joey. That’s nothing to worry about as this has been Bosa’s MO for years. However, Bosa is the next candidate for a market-defining contract extension for a defender.

The Niners and Bosa have said throughout that they will be patient when it comes to closing a deal. Recent precedent would indicate that there is not much to worry about. In recent years, the Niners worked their way through their offseason business before turning their attention to big-money renewal. And all of that — tight end George Kittle, linebacker Fred Warner, and receiver Deebo Samuel — were completed either right before training camp or shortly after it opened.

A deal for Bosa is expected to materialize in the same window as the others, if not a little sooner.

“I’ve said many times that this is a priority for this offseason,” Lynch said. “History shows that we have a really good track record of doing and making this happen. I look forward to working on it when the time comes.”

Will there be more squad changes?

Earlier this offseason, the 49ers implemented simple contract reshuffles at cornerbacks Charvarius Ward and Warner to provide the necessary salary cap headroom for entry into free agency. Then, just before the NFL draft, they made another game with running back Christian McCaffrey, opening up $8.576 million in additional space. The move prompted some to question whether they were preparing to move for another veteran in an emergency situation.

According to Lynch, the primary reason for the move was to make room for the team’s rookie class signing, but he also kept an option open to look around.

“It just gives us some space,” Lynch said. “We will see. We will never stop looking for players who can help and it’s just that a lot of spots are filled and where they aren’t we will fill them up when needed.”

The Niners have a full 90-man roster going into the OTAs but will likely create even more space as they lengthen Bosa, meaning they have some flexibility in adding experienced offensive line help, want to look at Edge Rusher or elsewhere. Even when nothing is imminent, OTAs offer Shanahan and Lynch an opportunity to assess what they have and act accordingly when they feel more is needed.

What will the offensive line look like?

The 49ers are returning four of their five starting offensive players from last season but must replace powerful right tackle Mike McGlinchey, who signed a five-year, $87.5 million deal with the Denver Broncos in March. After refusing to invest free-agent money or significant draft resources in the position, they made it clear they believe McGlinchey’s replacement in the form of swing tackle Colton McKivitz is already on the roster.

McKivitz has only started five games since the Niners drafted him in the fifth round in 2020, but they believed in him enough to sign him on a two-year, $4.56 million extension this offseason.

“You can win with Colton,” Shanahan said. “He’s been here a while. The San Francisco 49ers have signed Brandon Allen as the NFC West franchise adds another quarterback to their growing options at center for 2023.

On Wednesday, veteran quarterback Allen put his pen to paper in Santa Clara, ending his three-year run as a replacement for Joe Burrow with the Cincinnati Bengals, who became the fourth signal caller on the books. Selected by the Jacksonville Jaguars in the sixth round of the 2016 NFL Draft, Allen has become something of a journeyman after stints with the Los Angeles Rams, Denver Broncos and Bengals.

He started three times with the Broncos in 2019 while only starting six games in three seasons at Cincinnati. Allen has now signed with the 49ers, where he joins Brock Purdy, Trey Lance and Sam Darnold in a crowded QB room that has raised many questions.

The 49ers have plenty of quarterbacks to choose from, but injuries have plagued them. Lance — the third overall winner of 2021 — suffered a season-ending injury in Week 2 of the 2022 season, which eventually allowed Purdy to transition from third-row quarterback to starter after Jimmy Garoppolo also suffered an injury that ended his season early .

The “Mr Irrelevant” of the 2022 NFL draft after being the last pick in Las Vegas, Purdy went 5-0 in the regular season and led the 49ers to an NFC Championship Game appearance during a spectacular rookie season — and he is expected to be the starter once he returns from ulnar collateral ligament (UCL) surgery. Over the course of his career, Allen has started nine games and has a 56.7 percent completion rate, with 10 touchdowns against six interceptions. He started for the Bengals after Burrow went down with an ACL injury in 2020.

After losing their support to the 49ers, the Bengals made a quick move Wednesday to sign Trevor Siemian. The 31-year-old played for five teams before landing in Cincinnati after being drafted in the seventh round of the 2015 NFL Draft.

LAS VEGAS (KLAS) – Jimmy Garoppolo is the new quarterback for the Las Vegas Raiders, according to a report by the NFL Network.

Garoppolo, a free agent who was injured while playing for the San Francisco 49ers in 2022, is said to have signed a 3-year, $67.5 million contract with the Raiders.

Derek Carr, New Orleans Saints agree to four-year contract

The report points out that $34 million of the deal is guaranteed. The agreement will reunite Raiders head coach Josh McDaniels, Garoppolo’s offensive coordinator with the New England Patriots, with Garoppolo, who began his pro career with New England.

On March 6, former Raiders QB Derek Carr signed a four-year contract with the New Orleans Saints.

Why George Kittle craves QB stability at the 49ers

George Kittle reflects on the “frustrating” quarterback turnover with the 49ers in recent years and explains his desire for stability in the position going forward.

SANTA CLARA, Calif. — As per tradition, San Francisco 49ers tight end George Kittle stood in front of quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo’s locker as he answered questions from reporters on locker cleaning day following the 49ers’ loss in the NFC Championship game.

Kittle had just covered everything from the pain of losing to the Philadelphia Eagles to the amount of microphones a reporter was holding when the subject, which he had been unable to avoid in his six years in the league, was brought up. When Kittle heard the word “quarterback,” he stopped the question in its tracks, noting that he’s no stranger to questions about the game’s most important position.

“I had a six-year career and a year with a quarterback,” Kittle said. “Besides that, I’ve had two or more. Four out of six (years) I’ve had three or more… I just love having an abundance of quarterbacks to choose from.”

The sarcasm in Kittle’s voice served as a cover for the apparent frustration he and the 49ers have had since coach Kyle Shanahan’s arrival as quarterback in 2017. While the Niners have had a lot of success — they’ve gone to the NFC Championship Game in three of the last four years — there’s an unmistakable sense that if they only had a quarterback that could do it, they would have at least one Super Bowl title is to stay fit and healthy.

Instead, San Francisco has gone through six quarterbacks – Garoppolo, Nick Mullens, CJ Beathard, Brian Hoyer, Brock Purdy and Trey Lance – who have started at least four games since 2017. Injuries have played the biggest role in musical play quarterbacks and, after the Niners ended the loss to the Eagles with zero-signal callers who could throw the ball, are once again driving the Niners’ biggest offseason storyline: Who Will Be in 2023 be their starter?

If you’d asked that question in September, the answer would likely have been Lance, who the Niners drafted No. 3 overall in 2021 after trading two first-rounders for promotion. If you had asked in October or November, Garoppolo would have been a legitimate possibility. If you had asked in December or most of January, all signs would have pointed to Purdy, the final choice of the 2022 draft.

Here in February, the Niners don’t necessarily have an answer, at least not one set in stone, aside from the near-certainty that Garoppolo won’t return after becoming a free agent in March. Early indications are that it will ultimately come down to either Purdy or Lance, with Purdy being the favorite if he is healthy. It’s the only logical way to look at it since they’re also the only two quarterbacks signed for next year and beyond.

“I know we have two starters on our team right now that I think we can win with,” said coach Kyle Shanahan. “When you have that situation, you’re not so eager to look around.”

Based on his game in 2022, Purdy should be seen as a leader to start next season, but whether that comes to fruition will depend largely on how he recovers from a torn ulnar collateral ligament in his right elbow.

Purdy is due to have surgery on that right elbow on February 22, with hopes that he can be fully released in about six months, which would eventually see him back in training camp. When Purdy and Shanahan had their exit meeting, the topic of next year’s launch didn’t even come up.

“In terms of who’s going to be the starter and who we’re bringing in or any moves or anything, we haven’t covered any of that,” Purdy said. “To be honest, I didn’t want to hear anything. I just wanted to focus on my recovery now and what I’m doing with my arm moving forward.”

Assuming Purdy can recover in time, it’s hard to imagine anyone ushering him in as a starter considering how he’s performing in eight starts. He was a revelation when healthy, finishing with a 70.3 QBR (third-best in the NFL) after stepping in for Garoppolo in Week 13. The Niners went 8-1 in games where Purdy grabbed the most snaps, with the only loss coming to the Eagles in a game where Purdy only caught six snaps before suffering the elbow injury after being hit by Haason Reddick had been beaten on a stripsack. Purdy reentered when backup Josh Johnson suffered a concussion and ended the game, but was limited to just two short pass attempts and 13 handoffs.

“I don’t see why you can’t trust Brock Purdy after putting it all together,” Kittle said.

As Shanahan is quick to point out, Purdy’s recovery means the Niners won’t have to make a decision anytime soon, which opens the door for Lance to reassert himself. Lance suffered a fractured right ankle that required two surgeries to repair in a Week 2 win against the Seattle Seahawks. But Lance is expected to be released in three to four weeks and said he should be back at 100% in time for organized team activities in May.

The Niners need to add at least one more quarterback to get through the offseason program, but Lance shouldn’t have a shortage of opportunities.

“I’m looking forward to going out and showing what I can do,” Lance said. “The same situation it’s been for me for the last two years and really my whole life.”

For their part, the 49ers recognize that the constant quarterback injuries made it difficult for them to win the sixth Lombardi Trophy, but they also know that Purdy and Lance are their best options right now. While acknowledging that somehow they need to add another quarterback or two, Shanahan said he wants “the best thing that’s available that fits into our team’s structure and the salary cap and all of that.”

Suffice it to say the 49ers aren’t teeming with cap space and don’t seem ready to go big game hunting. At least not now. This is especially true given that Tom Brady has already announced his retirement and the many complications that would come with chasing Green Bay’s Aaron Rodgers, who is unlikely to be treated in the NFC, has far too large a contract for the Niners to have accepting him, and almost certainly will require compensation beyond what the Niners could offer.

All of this leads to the natural conclusion that San Francisco will most likely lean on Purdy and Lance with the possibility of signing a mid-level veteran like Andy Dalton, Jacoby Brissett or Teddy Bridgewater for insurance. Matt Ryan could also be an intriguing name if it becomes available and the price is right. That’s a task made easier by the fact that Lance and Purdy — along with a $10.19 million salary cap in 2023 — are on their rookie deals.

“Bottom line, it’s better to have a quarterback that you really believe in because it’s such an important position,” said general manager John Lynch. “Coincidentally there are two young people that we really like, so I think that more than anything would bring us to it. … I think it’s something we can exploit if we choose to go in that direction.”

One way or another, the Niners are hoping they can finally find some quarterback stability and play a full season with the same starter for the first time since Garoppolo led the 49ers to Super Bowl LIV in 2019.

“It’s just the situation we’re in,” Kittle said. “For whatever reason, sometimes our quarterback position gets hurt and it’s unfortunate … And we’ve been dealing with that for a while, so hopefully we can fix that mistake and just play quarterback.”

San Francisco just can’t have a repeat of last season. Said campaign ended with Josh Johnson seeing extensive action in a blowout loss to the Philadelphia Eagles in the NFC Championship game.

With Purdy’s questionable return schedule and Lance’s lack of experience, general manager John Lynch needs to add a quarterback. That much is already known.

“We may need to look at the quarterback market alongside Brock and Trey to protect ourselves from anything that might happen,” Lynch said at the NFL Scouting Combine earlier this offseason.

With San Francisco currently sitting just $7.82 million below the 2023 NFL salary cap, adding a high-profile veteran to the mix is ​​nowhere on the horizon. Lynch and company also recently pretty much declared the end of Jimmy Garoppolo’s tenure in Northern California. He’s ready to go free and generate interest that market dynamics will make a return to San Francisco impossible.

What we do know is that Lynch and company will be working to create more cap room ahead of the March 13th start of the NFL manipulation period for free agents. This should allow the 49ers to pick their pitch when it comes to second division quarterbacks, which will end up being a soft market for players of this ilk. Some quarterbacks in this class will wait and see how the NFL draft plays before signing with a team. I don’t expect that to be the case with Mayfield. The former No. 1 pick is in a position where he is likely to land a one-year deal. It makes sense to find a landing spot that gives it a real chance to launch.

With Purdy’s return schedule potentially stretching into Week 1, San Francisco would be ideal for Mayfield. It has the star power on offense to help it prove its worth.

From the 49ers’ perspective, the soft free agent market could be beneficial at the quarterback. Typically, someone with Mayfield’s track record would land an entry-level job in the open market. This time it is highly unlikely that that will be the case. In 2020, Mayfield threw 26 touchdowns compared to eight interceptions en route to a rare playoff appearance with the Cleveland Browns.

Jacoby Brissett

Brissett is one of those quarterbacks who oscillated between starter quality on the low end and backup material on the high end. He’s also someone San Francisco should believe can slip into a stopgap role and make short-term appearances.

While replacing a suspended Deshaun Watson for 11 games with the Browns last season, Brissett completed 64 percent of his passes for 2,608 yards for 14 total touchdowns and six interceptions.

As with all of the options I’ve listed here, it’s only going to be about price. When Brissett is grossing less than $10 million on a one-year contract, the 49ers have a lot to think about.

Carson Wentz

Wentz would be the ultimate winback project for 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan. Here’s a veteran who has played with three different teams in as many seasons since originally playing for the Philadelphia Eagles. The former No. 2 is also seen as somewhat disaffected, which will limit the interest he receives in NFL free agency.

At this point, the 49ers could likely add Wentz into the mix with a very low base salary in 2023. That means about $5 million with a lot of contracted incentives.

Prior to his struggles over the past three seasons, Wentz was considered an up-and-coming young quarterback. From 2017-19 he was responsible for 81 touchdowns and just 21 interceptions in Philadelphia.

Andy Dalton

San Francisco had a keen interest in Dalton before eventually ending up with the Chicago Bears ahead of the 2021 season. It didn’t materialize after the former Pro Bowler landed a one-year, $10 million deal in Chicago. That was more than what the 49ers were willing to offer.

The good news? Dalton’s contract with the Saints last season included a guarantee of just $3 million. The veteran knows where his value currently lies. And in reality, that matches what the 49ers are willing to pay for a potential third-string man.

As for Dalton’s most recent success, he threw up 18 touchdowns versus nine interceptions last season in New Orleans while completing 67 percent of his passes. Not too shabby.

Matt Ryan

Realistically, Ryan hit that proverbial wall that we’ve seen from every great quarterback of yesteryear. The former NFL MVP was absolutely cruel in his freshman season with the Indianapolis Colts, throwing 13 interceptions in just 12 starts.

Now that Indianapolis is set to leave him after just one season, a reunion with Kyle Shanahan might make sense. Ryan would come cheap. He worked under Shanahan when he was the Atlanta Falcons offensive line coordinator and was eventually named the 2016 NFL MVP.

San Francisco could be hoping Ryan has a decent season left in him. A return to an offense he knows could help. At the very least, the borderline future Hall of Famer could serve as fodder for training camp should Purdy’s recovery be extended and/or Lance fail to prove he’s capable of being a starting quarterback.

INDIANAPOLIS — To try and acquire a veteran quarterback, the Washington Commanders have started to lay what Ron Rivera calls “the minimal groundwork.” They’ve called teams to check in on possible targets — expressing their interest and reminding them they have “potential” to get a deal done with draft picks, he says.

The problem: Rivera and Co. are still unsure which of these guys are actually available.

“We’re just waiting to hear what’s going to happen,” he says.

With two weeks until free agency begins, Rivera said Tuesday there’s “no clarity” to whether big-named quarterbacks could actually be had in the coming weeks. For months, speculation has stirred over the futures of Green Bay’s Aaron Rodgers and Seattle’s Russell Wilson, but neither quarterback has yet to demand out of their situation. Other high-profile veterans like Las Vegas’ Derek Carr and Minnesota’s Kirk Cousins ​​are looking more likely to stay with their current teams.

So far, the market has hardly moved. San Francisco’s Jimmy Garoppolo, perhaps the most obvious trade candidate, has yet to be dealt—and reports indicated Tuesday that the quarterback is set to undergo shoulder surgery that could keep him out until July. Colts general manager Chris Ballard, meanwhile, told reporters that the team is still undecided on starter Carson Wentz.

Now factor in the less than exciting incoming rookie quarterback draft class, the teams in need of a quarterback could end up disappointed.

“This year, there’s not much available,” Tampa Bay Buccaneers coach Bruce Arians told ESPN.

The Buccaneers, like the Commanders, are in need of a new starter thanks to Tom Brady’s retirement. Looking at the landscape, Arians told multiple outlets he was skeptical that any of the oft-rumored quarterbacks would actually be moved. His reasoning: Why would a team be willing to move on without a clear upgrade available?

“I don’t see it,” Arians said. “As a coach, I’d be really pissed if you traded my guy.”

That type of thinking is why most expect the Seahawks to be unwilling to part with Wilson. Seahawks coach Pete Carroll is 70, so what’s the incentive for him to part with a Super Bowl-winning quarterback in Wilson? And despite a down year with Wilson in 2021, Seattle would have no clear path to contend without Wilson unless it also got another top quarterback in the deal. (Wilson, too, has poured cold water on playing for the Commanders).

Situations differ by team, of course. San Francisco has Trey Lance waiting in the wings, so Garoppolo will likely be moved. And on Tuesday, Ballard sounded more than ready to move on from Wentz — offering no commitment the starter would be back next season. “Ultimately, we will make the decision that we think is best, both in the short and the long-term,” Ballard said.

But if the Colts do decide to part with Wentz, Indianapolis will still have to find a replacement — making them another team in the hunt for a new quarterback.

Rivera said if the Commanders have to settle for an option that isn’t as splashy — he said he remained comfortable with the idea of ​​playing a rookie quarterback if need be — he said he thinks Washington would still be in a position to succeed with a mid-tier level quarterback.

“Oh I believe you can,” Rivera said. “I believe you can win. A quarterback of that caliber, it helps you. … Whichever route we take, just know that we are going to fortify the other parts (of the roster).”

As for the potential cost of what it would take to land a quarterback, Rivera’s tone was markedly different from a year ago. Whereas last year Rivera stressed the need to protect future draft capital and hang on to core players, this year he said: “Whatever you pay, that’s what you think the value is.”

A year ago, Washington offered only a first-round and a third-round pick for Detroit’s Matthew Stafford. The Rams swooped in instead, landing Stafford for two first-rounders, a third and quarterback Jared Goff. The move paved the way for the Rams to win last month’s Super Bowl.

The Stafford package doesn’t have much of an impact on negotiations this time around, Rivera said.

“Does anybody really care what was traded for Matthew Stafford last year?” Rivera said. “No.”

Lynch said on his own Twitter feed he “accidentally and unknowingly” liked the tweet about Garoppolo. And what’s more — it happened during Christmas Eve mass with his family, Lynch explained.

“Never intended to [like the tweet] and remain a huge believer in Jimmy,” Lynch said in Friday night’s post.

The Twitter misstep comes after Garoppolo completed 26-of-35 passes for 322 yards and a touchdown in Thursday’s 20-17 loss to the Titans. He also threw two interceptions which played a factor in the loss.

San Francisco is sixth in the NFC right now, so the playoffs aren’t impossible. They host the Houston Texans on Jan. 2 and close out their regular season on the road against the Los Angeles Rams.

Lynch and the 49ers acquired Garoppolo from the New England Patriots in 2017 for a second-round pick in the 2018 NFL Draft. In February of 2018, San Francisco signed the quarterback to a five-year, $137.5 million contract extension.

SAN JOSE (KPIX) – The sports world reacts to the comparison of the NFL design process to the slavery of former San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick in the six-part Netflix documentary about his life, “Colin in Black & White.”

Lorenzo Neal, who played 16 seasons in the NFL and went through the Combine, said Kaepernick used poor wording.

“If you’re talking about a combine, combine Tom Brady, arguably the greatest quarterback of all time, he’s been through it – there were no exceptions,” said Neal. “You judge who you are. They want to make sure they are getting the goods they are getting because they are preparing to pay you a handsome salary. But isn’t that the case when you’re interviewing for a job? “

Neal said that when people talk about slavery, many actually “have no idea what it is like to be beaten, whipped or mutilated”.

Dr. Shaun Fletcher, assistant professor of public relations and sports communications for the state of San Jose, used to work on the other side of combine harvesters.

He worked for the operational side of a college football team and attended combines. He said there is a process of the pre-design process that cameras are not allowed to capture, but he said he still wouldn’t compare it to slavery.

“Hands are stretched to see how wide their hands are, they are moved and pulled in unusual positions,” Fletcher said. “The combine ended when it ended, not in incapacitation (sic) and death. It didn’t end with the lines breaking up. For many it ended in generational wealth. I am sure that many players would tell you in the end, because I have spoken to many of them myself, that they would do it again. “

Josh Rosen is back on the road.

The former UCLA football quarterback was retired by the San Francisco 49ers on Tuesday, marking the end of his eight-month tenure on the bay. Rosen, who was number 10 overall in the 2018 NFL Draft, has now been to four teams in less than four seasons and will look to add a fifth to that list in the coming days.

Rosen spent one season with the Arizona Cardinals, who then traded him to the Miami Dolphins the following spring. The Dolphins waived roses in September 2020 when he then joined the Tampa Bay Buccaneers practice team before signing a deal with the 49ers in December.

In San Francisco’s week 1 preseason game against the Kansas City Chiefs on Saturday, Rosen went 10v15 with 93 passing yards, one interception, and a 55.7 passer score.

Not only is Rosen currently not on an NFL roster, he’s the only quarterback selected in the first round of the 2018 draft and won’t be a Week 1 starter in 2021. Baker Mayfield last led the Cleveland Browns into the playoffs season, Sam Darnold is at the top of the Carolina Panthers depth chart, Josh Allen emerged as an MVP candidate for the Buffalo Bills, and Lamar Jackson has already won this award as a signal caller for the Baltimore Ravens.

In Rosen’s place, the 49ers cornerback Devontae Harrie challenged the Baltimore Ravens, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

Rosen’s previous team, the Buccaneers, designed Florida’s Kyle Trask in the 2021 NFL draft and still has Blaine Gabbert as the second-tier quarterback. As a result, Rosen would likely be back on the training team should he go back south to learn more from Tom Brady. The New England Patriots have shown interest in roses multiple times in the past, but Cam Newton and rookie Mac Jones are battling for the starting job while veteran Brian Hoyer takes third place.

The Musical Chairs game, which takes place on NFL squads during preseason, could give Rosen an option or two for the future. From today’s perspective, however, the line of applicants for Rosen’s services is likely to be shorter than ever before.

Trey Lance doesn’t just win the 49ers quarterback competition. He’s doing a show.

He is the main attraction in the training camp. Not Fred Warner. Not George Kittle. Certainly not Jimmy Garoppolo. Lance. He’s the player everyone is watching – even the other players.

“I think all eyes are on him,” said DJ Jones on Wednesday. “He’s special.”

On Tuesday, linebacker Dre Greenlaw wrote on Instagram that Lance has the “best arm I’ve ever seen.”

I share Greenlaw’s opinion. Lance has the best arm I’ve seen in person on the 49er practice field. He’s also the best quarterback I’ve ever trained in Santa Clara. He literally does everything well.

He’s an excellent runner like Lamar Jackson, but has a much better arm and great speed like Colin Kaepernick, but has much better throwing mechanics and a much faster release.

That means Lance has the chance to be the 49ers’ best quarterback since Steve Young.

He and Garoppolo did that on Wednesday.

TREY LANCE

Played exclusively with the second team offensive and completed 7 of 8 attempts to pass. The one incomplete throw should have been a defensive pass disorder.

Lance played the whole camp with the defense of the second team. It’s time to let him face the starters. Here is one blow after blow of his practice:

1. Rolled right, found his third read, Wayne Gallman, curling around the back of the game and tossing all the way across the field to him to win a 10. This was an extremely powerful throw at a stationary target.

2. Run a zone to his left and won 10 yards.

3. Completed a 15 yard pass across the middle to Brandon Aiyuk who ran an excavation route from left to right. Great job hitting a moving target at the crotch.

4. George Kittle threw an incomplete deep pass down the right sideline. Kittle was open – he had a few steps on the rookie safety Talanoa Hufanga – but Lance lost the pass. This caused Kittle to slow down, which caused Hufanga to hit him. Looks like a defensive pass disorder. Either way, bad litter.

5. Completed a 45 yard pass to Ross Dwelley moving up the right sideline. This pass was a rope.

6. Did a zone read and lost ten feet. Maurice Hurst marked him in the backcourt.

7. Crawled to the left, feet set back, and thrown back over the middle to his right to Aiyuk to win 10.

8. Completed another 45 yard pass, this time to run Kittle up the seam. Throws like these become routine for Lance.

9. Threw a 10 yard touchdown pass to Jordan Matthews, who was running a seam route in the red zone. Matthews was Lance’s second reading.

10. He ran a zone to his left in the red zone and scored a touchdown. Simple.

11. Throw a touch pass over a cornerback in the end zone to get a result. Nsimba Webster intercepted the pass. This was Lance’s best touch shot of the camp.

JIMMY GAROPPOLO

Poor Jimmy.

He used to be the most physically gifted quarterback in town. Now he’s like an outdated piece of technology – he’s a typewriter and Lance is an iPhone.

So Garoppolo can’t keep up even on his best day.

Wednesday wasn’t Garoppolo’s best day, however. Here is one beat after beat of his morning.

1. Completed a 5 yard checkdown pass to Mohamed Sanu after holding the ball in his pocket for too long and taking a sack from Arik Armstead.

2. Stared too long on first read, threw too late on second read – Deebo Samuel curls up – and let cornerback Ken Webster break his pass. Samuel opened a door earlier.

3. Threw Kittle a pass driving a deep intersection route and was almost intercepted by Tavon Wilson who got both hands on the pass but dropped it. Garoppolo never saw Wilson lurk in a zone waiting for Kittle.

4. Threw an incomplete deep pass at Kittle that was open. Garoppolo hesitated, grabbed twice, then sailed out of bounds with a long wobbler. Awkward.

5. Completed a check-down pass for Trent Sherfield running a swing route.

6. Completed a 10 yard pass for Kittle who drove an out route against Tony Jefferson.

7. Sailed an incomplete pass over the head of Brandon Aiyuk who ran a deep intersection route against K’Waun Williams and was open.

8. Completed a screen pass on Deebo Samuel.

9. Rolled right and threw a short pass at Kittle, who ran into the end zone from a few yards.

10. Threw Deebo a crooked pass to Samuel, but Samuel dropped it.

11. Threw a quick pass to run Trey Sermon back.

Not a bad exercise for a Garoppolo, but not an exciting one either. His morning ended with a checkdown and nobody cared about it because it will soon be history.

Sorry, Jimmy. It’s strictly business.
