GILROY (KPIX) — Big tech may be making a huge mark on southern Santa Clara County.

The City of Gilroy is soliciting bids in order to determine the environmental impact of Amazon’s Gilroy Data Center, or GDC, one of two major projects the tech giant is pushing forward in the South Bay.

READ MORE: BART Steps Up Security In Wake Of NYC Subway Mass Shooting

“Gilroy has put out a request to get consultants outside of the city to come in and assist us with fully understanding what the benefits of such a project might be, as well as some as what the drawbacks might be, and what opportunities we have as a city to try to mitigate some of those negative impacts,” said Gilroy Vice Mayor Peter Leroe-Munoz.

Leroe-Munoz, who is also General Counsel and Senior Vice President at the Silicon Valley Leadership Group, said the city has been working behind the scenes for years to attract tech companies into the city, but added city leaders would not be “rubber stamping” projects.

“We certainly want to be very thoughtful, as we are with every applicant that comes to our city. We have a lot of resources that we offer here. We have a very diverse, young and growing workforce. So there are benefits that we offer to innovation industries that want to locate here in Gilroy. And we certainly want to work with them, but we want to make sure it’s a good fit for both partners,” said Leroe-Munoz.

The GDC would sit atop a 66-acre parcel behind the Gilroy Unified School District, along the eastern side of Highway 101.

READ MORE: SF-Based Yelp Offers To Pay Travel Fees For Its Oklahoma Employees Seeking Abortions

The details are still being worked out, but the data center would likely consist of several buildings totaling around 500,000 square feet, to “reliably meet the increased demand of the digital economy,” the company said in a statement.

Less than a mile south, Amazon is also moving forward with plans to build a large distribution center and warehouse, dubbed “Project Garlic,” on a 60-acre parcel located at the northeast corner of Camino Arroyo and Highway 152. The company is also working out plans that would total 400,000 square feet, along with a six-acre commercial development.

Less than a mile south of Project Garlic is yet another project from another tech giant. In 2019, Google purchased a 40-acre rectangular plot to build a nursery in order to grow their own trees for the company’s real estate developments.

“I think Gilroy has had a moment for quite some time. I think it’s time that Silicon Valley finally recognized that the southernmost city in Silicon Valley is certainly open for business and has so much to offer,” said Leroe-Munoz.

The vice-mayor assured citizens that the city would not abandon its agricultural roots.

“We recognize that history. We recognize its importance to our local economy and it is something that we are going to protect, in addition to bringing a diversity of jobs and economic opportunities to our communities,” said Leroe-Munoz.

John Oliver took action against Alex Jones, the “Walter Cronkite of … Gorilla Clowns”, on Sunday last week tonight.

The charismatic performer, who is regularly charged, is an important part of many people’s media nutrition, noted Oliver. Almost 6 million people listen to his radio broadcast or watch it online every week. His influential fans include “Russian Ambassador to the United States, Donald Trump,” who tweeted Jones’ claims and was on his program at least once.

Oliver had previously talked about Jones on his first show this season, and Jones seemed a little upset – that is, he was excited and responded happily. Jones dismissed Oliver’s HBO show, said their reviews were “in the bathroom” and suggested he got his performance because “everyone knows a British accent sounds intellectual,” adding, “Hey boy that one People want legitimacy. They want real people who can talk to them and touch them inside. “

“Last Week Tonight”: John Oliver, exhausted from so much bad news recently, talks about missing Bunny and Usher dollars

Oliver replied Sunday night and said to Jones, “Don’t call me ‘boy’ and insist his British accent” sound like a chimney sweep going through a wood chopper. “

Jones’ shtick includes allegations that Sandy Hook slaughtered elementary school children and that some school workers were orchestrated by the government in what, Oliver noted, “deeply harms the families of the victims, is disgusting and should be disqualified from ever taking him seriously. ”

“Unfortunately, doing things that keep you from being taken seriously doesn’t seem like a big deal anymore,” noted Oliver when a photo of Trump’s inauguration surfaced on screen.

During his four-hour program, Jones frequently introduces products that he sells. Oliver spent a week watching InfoWars and watching Jones spend a quarter of his time – an hour – talking about products he was selling, placing ads, or directing listeners to his InfoWars online store, where You can buy survival gear, organic shampoo and body wash and Clinton Rape Whistle, “To let Bill know that you are in the crowd and that you know the truth,” said Oliver, the pitch promised. It comes with a free bumper sticker “9/11 Was an Inside Job” that Oliver discovered when he bought the pipe.

Since 2013, Jones’ program has increasingly focused on clogging its own products, vitamins and so-called “nutraceuticals”. Two-thirds of his funds come from the sale of these products, including “Super Male Vitality” potions, a “caveman” drink that combines chocolate and “domesticated bird bodies”, and another drink that Oliver guarantees “the mind and body.” soothed by children “said exactly, sounded very creepy.

Oliver mentioned Jones’ recent controversial interview in Megyn Kelly’s NBC Sunday Newsmag, which Jones renamed Megyn Kelly to Rationalizing Low Ratings. In that interview, Jones insisted that it costs $ 45-50 million to keep InfoWars up and running, and that whatever he does, he plows back on the show. Jones likes to tell his followers that he needs immediate financial support from viewers / listeners and asks them to “fund” his show through his products – like “an NPR pledge to people who hate NPR,” sniffed Oliver.

If you watch the program regularly, you will find that Jones wears several Rolex watches and expensive sports coats. Jones felt compelled to explain, noted Oliver and told the followers, “I dress as a Satanist so that I can enter this world and show you that none of this means anything.”

“Torturing Sandy Hook’s parents should get you to the Satanic Club in comfort,” without the need to buy a Rolex, let alone several of them, Oliver insisted.

Senator Pat Toomey, R-Pa., Urged Mary Daly, president of the San Francisco Fed, to provide a briefing and decade of records of the reserve bank’s economic research activities. “The Federal Reserve can pursue Mission Creep or greet itself for political arrest. However, such activities are contrary to legal responsibilities, ”argued Toomey.

The San Francisco bank is one of the 12 institutions in the Federal Reserve system, each responsible for conducting monetary and regulatory activities in a specific US region.

Each reserve bank is responsible for overseeing and auditing the banks, lending to financial institutions, operating Fed services, and reporting on the unique business environment and development in their respective districts. The Fed system is funded by fees paid by banks and contributes billions of dollars to the Treasury every year.

Reserve banks also publish economic studies by human resource economists on a variety of topics relevant to the Fed’s mandate to promote maximum employment, stable prices and a safe banking system.

Toomey argues, however, that “a substantial amount” of “Fed research” in San Francisco “focuses on non-monetary issues and how these affect narrow subsets of people.” He specifically cited two San Francisco Fed blog posts on racial justice and a series of virtual seminars on climate-related economic issues hosted by the bank.

The San Francisco Fed also recently released research on fluctuations in cash flows, the economic impact of school closings, inflation, resilience of community banks, and differences between the US and other advanced economies in recovering from the COVID-19 recession.

While criticizing the research of other reserve banks, Toomey wrote that the “seemingly sudden and alarming inclusion of social research” at the San Francisco Fed “could be bitterly partial” and warranted an investigation by the banking panel.

He asked Daly to provide a briefing for the banking committee staff, all records related to the San Francisco Fed’s series of climate seminars, all documents related to research into climate change and racial justice dated July 1, 2019, and 10 years of annual reserve bank spending about research and public relations.

“We have received the letter from Sen. Toomey and are reviewing it. We look forward to discussing the contents with Sen. Toomey’s office,” said a San Francisco Fed spokesman.

The Hill said Toomey’s letter “opens another front in the battle between Republicans and the Fed over the central bank’s growing focus on climate change and other social issues that GOP lawmakers consider irrelevant to their mission and Democrats consider essential.”

Republicans have harshly criticized the Fed for setting up committees and investing in research into the potential climate-related risks of the banks it oversees. The Fed has also joined a global network of central banks and financial regulators focused on climate change.

Fed leaders have insisted that the bank will play no role in setting climate policy for the US, but rather focus on how climate change affects banking supervision.

Even so, Republicans fear that the bank may at some point divert lending away from certain sources of energy – something the Fed has ever ruled out.

Toomey and GOP lawmakers have also taken steps towards climate and diversity policies from the Treasury Department and the Securities Exchange Commission (SEC). Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen was severely pushed back by Republican lawmakers after declaring climate change an “existential threat” that required action by the department. It also opened the door to tax and regulatory policy to limit carbon emissions, but did not explain what it would look like.

Gary Gensler, Biden’s election to lead the SEC, also angered Republicans when he expressed his support for stricter climate, diversity and policy disclosure rules for public companies.

Indeed, there is considerable intense debate over a range of Congressional and executive research topics, as well as the democratic interest in using the Congressional Review Act to resolve the controversial Department of Health and Health rules passed in the final days of the Trump presidency cancel human services.

The MPs Raja Krishnamoorthi (D-Ill.) And Anna Eshoo (D-Calif.) Passed a resolution on Monday to disapprove of the HHS rule “sunset”, according to which all 18,000 regulations of the authority have to be checked every 10 years expired.

However, provisions of this are only available for the first 60 legislative days of the new Congress and would likely end sometime in April. The resolution currently has no co-sponsors from the Senate.

A legislative tool favored by Republicans in the early days of the Trump administration, the CRA was used to crush 14 Obama-era regulations. However, the Democrats were reluctant to use it, partly due to concerns about legal language in the rating agency, which is preventing the competent authority from coming up with another rule that is essentially similar.

So we’ll see. It is clear that the administration and Congress are keen to see changes implemented, including prominent program changes to curb climate change – important proposals that Washington Insider believes should be watched closely if considered.
