The Philadelphia Eagles are home underdogs to the San Francisco 49ers in a rematch of last season’s NFC Championship Sunday. A head-to-head win over the Eagles would go a long way for the 49ers, as they currently sit two games behind them with an 8-3 record for home-field advantage and a bye in the playoffs.

Kickoff is set for 4:25 p.m. ET on Sunday at Lincoln Financial Field. The game will be televised on FOX.

The matchup pits two of the highest-scoring offenses against each other; the 49ers and Eagles are tied for the third-highest points per game at 28.2. A.J. Brown has already surpassed 1,000 receiving yards for Philadelphia and caught seven touchdown passes. DeVonta Smith is heating up as of late, with 23 catches, 355 yards and three touchdowns in his last four games. Jalen Hurts’ recent play has catapulted him to be the favorite to win NFL MVP. His elite play couldn’t come at a better time, as the Philly defense has struggled recently, allowing 24.4 points per game during their five-game winning streak.

San Francisco hopes having Brock Purdy, who left the NFC Championship Game with an elbow injury, will help lead to a different result. The Niners have scored 30 or more points in seven of their eight wins. The turnaround of the defense has been critical to the 49ers’ three-game winning streak. Since getting battered by the Bengals for 31 points, opponents have averaged just 10 points per game in the three games since.

The injury status of OL Lane Johnson, DT Fletcher Cox and TE Dallas Goedert could play a significant role in the outcome of this game.

The San Francisco 49ers (8-3) return to Lincoln Financial Field to take on the Philadelphia Eagles (10-1) in what could be a preview of another playoff matchup.

All things are clicking for the 49ers as they’ve won three straight games, the latest win coming in a Thanksgiving victory over the Seattle Seahawks. Christian McCaffrey got into the end zone once again while the defense made life tough for Geno Smith and the rest of the Seattle offense.

Philadelphia is coming off winning perhaps the game of the year in an overtime thriller against the Buffalo Bills. Despite the dreadful first-half performance, the Eagles showed why they have the best record in the NFL and can get another statement win against a team that wants revenge for last season.

Lorenzo Reyes: Eagles 25, 49ers 20

The 49ers can present a couple of problems for the Eagles; San Francisco’s ferocious pass rush could generate pressure that disrupts Jalen Hurts and the Philly offense. But the Eagles have met every challenge they’ve faced and the key to this game will be to keep third- and fourth-down distances manageable; Philadelphia is first in the NFL in fourth-down conversion rate, moving the chains an astonishing 76.5% of the time, but also rank third in third-down efficiency (47.3%). The Niners’ defense on third downs is in the bottom third of the league. I have a hard time going against the Eagles at home, especially when they’re getting a field goal.

Tyler Dragon: 49ers 25, Eagles 24

The game of the week. This NFC title game rematch is worth the hype. The 49ers and Eagles are once again the two best teams in the conference. The 49ers don’t tend to lose games when Deebo Samuel, Trent Williams, Christian McCaffrey and Brock Purdy are all on the field together and healthy. San Francisco has revenge on its mind after losing in the NFC Championship game last season.

Safid Deen: Eagles 27, 49ers 20 

The game of the week between the two best teams in the NFL. Both sides are stacked, but I’m giving the edge to the Eagles because of the quarterback position. Give me Jalen Hurts over Brock Purdy every day of the week. 

Victoria Hernandez: Eagles 27, 49ers 26

This is probably the game of the week and a possible preview of the NFC championship as two of the grittiest teams in the conference face off. They might not be the most high-powered team in the league, but the Eagles continue to churn out win after win with sheer determination. They’re facing a stiff defense and a well-balanced offense in the 49ers, but being at home and sticking to their unique brand of football should squeak out another victory.

Jordan Mendoza: Eagles 33, 49ers 31

This game is going to be intense. San Francisco will want to prove that when they have a healthy quarterback, they can beat anybody, even the Eagles. Coming off a gritty win, Philadelphia has shown they can win even in bad performances. Even with the momentum San Francisco has, it’s tough to win inside the Linc. It’s close, but the Eagles get another last-second victory in another thriller.

With the 2023 NFL Draft now in the books, it’s time for teams to turn their attention to Organize Team Activities (OTAs). But before the next phase of offseason workouts starts, the league has unveiled the 17-game schedule for all 32 teams, and let’s just say that the Jacksonville Jaguars got a tough slate

The Jags will face off against several teams that qualified for the postseason last year, including the Buffalo Bills, the Cincinnati Bengals, the San Francisco 49ers, and the Kansas City Chiefs. The good news is that Jacksonville restocked its roster in the offseason and can go toe-to-toe with the league’s heavyweights. Moreover, they got three primetime games and they’ll play in both Monday and Sunday Night Football for the first time in more than 10 years.

Having said that, Jacksonville can’t underestimate anyone on their schedule, even those clubs in rebuilding mode, if they want to avoid being on the wrong end of an upset.

So how does the Jaguars’ schedule look for the 2023 season? How many wins will they rack up? Here’s a prediction for all 17 games.

Week 1 @ Colts: The Jaguars have had great success against the Colts at home, having won six straight games at TIAA Bank Field. However, they don’t fare as well when they play in Indianapolis, holding a 0-5 record since 2017. They’ll have the chance to end the streak in the season opener though.

Working in the Jaguars’ favor is that this is the most talented team they’ve assembled in years and they have a good chance to sweep their division rivals. It won’t be easy though.
Although the Colts ranked 15th in points allowed in 2022, they still have lots of talent on defense, including defensive tackle DeForest Buckner, edge rusher Kwity Paye and linebacker Shaquille Leonard.

On the other hand, the offense is lacking a bonafide No. 1 receiver and it’s uncertain if running back Jonathan Taylor can get back in All-Pro shape. For these reasons, the Jags might have a realistic shot at sweeping the Colts next season. Win

For the second time this season, the Colorado Rockies are set to begin a three game road series against the San Francisco Giants.

Colorado is losers of seven out of their last 10 games and recently lost a three game series to the Arizona Diamondbacks earlier this week 1-2. The Giants, are currently on a six game losing streak and are quickly finding themselves falling out of contention from a playoff birth as they have a record of 70-70 and are 2.5 games out of first place.

The mindset in the Colorado clubhouse this week should be simple and that is “Play to ruin someone else’s season”.

On the mound for the Rockies today is supposed to be Denver native and former Giants LHP Ty Blach. Blach has yet to face his former team this year as he is coming off an incredible month of Aug. where he pitched with a 3.71 ERA and provided 17 strikeouts in 26.2 innings.

Taking the mound for the Giants. today is rookie pitcher Kyle Harrison, who grew up in San Jose, California. Harrison, 22, is ranked as the number 20 prospect in the MLB top 100 prospects this year. He has only pitched in three games so far, with a record of 1-1 and 21 strikeouts. In 15.1 innings pitched, Harrison has a 1.24 WHIP

We’ve been at full steam this week and with a clean throw yesterday we were able to increase our weekly record to 15-5.

Let’s wrap up successfully with a complete list of Friday games and bets.

The model

The process is relatively simple. First, I assume that the (implicit) run totals for both teams are roughly efficient throughout the game. This is the case in most cases. This saves me the trouble of predicting the total number of runs scored in the game – and allows me to focus solely on “when” and not “how many”.

Next, I created a database of pitchers’ first-time performance during the order versus their overall stats. Since the latter will presumably factor into the game total, I wanted to find out if those runs are coming early or late.

Most — but not all — MLB starters do slightly better early in games, but there is some variation in elevation. The model uses xFIP (expected Fielding Independent Pitching) as the ERA predictor of choice.

But that’s only half the battle, the other half is made up of crimes. To do this, I looked at what percentage of a team’s total runs are produced by the top three batters in the lineup.

While a first inning run is scored, by definition it takes at least four batsmen to get on the plate, but one of the first three must actually score. The metric of choice here is wRC+, based on each team’s predicted lineup for the day.

This is somewhat of a tradeoff, as lineups (and totals) can change throughout the day, especially when key contributors miss time. However, in my experience, the inefficiency of the morning lines more than makes up for the gaps in the model.

However, be wary if Mike Trout, for example, is considered a doubt for the evening’s game.

The picks

For all of the tips below, I’ll provide the choice, best line, and threshold I would bet on. These will be published in the morning. So, if important news is published between posting and reading, be sure to take that into account.

Rather than betting on the traditional YRFI/NRFI, on rare occasions they will specifically bet on one team or the other to score a run, which is only a betting option at DraftKings as of this writing.

Because the model treats each team individually, it is sometimes assumed that a team will receive a larger percentage of run equity in the first inning than the betting lines allow for.

NRFI odds and tips for Friday 2nd June

Philadelphia Phillies vs. Washington Nationals NRFI: Thanks to the nine games, we have a good starting position here. However, both pitchers have solid first-in-order stats, and these teams rank 29th and 30th when it comes to the percentage of their output from the top three hitters.

St. Louis Cardinals vs. Pittsburgh Pirates YRFI: This game has an even higher overall score at 9.5, with both teams roughly average in top 3 hitter performance. Both starters have solid first lap splits but not enough to overcome the other factors.

Colorado Rockies vs. Kansas City Royals YRFI: This is another 9.5 run total game, although there are two relatively weak offenses overall. On the plus side, both handle a relatively high proportion of their offense from the top of their respective lineups.

Los Angeles Angels vs. Houston Astros NRFI: We have a strong duel here where two teams I generally prefer to bet YRFIs on against two pitchers I like to bet NRFIs on. Both Shohei Ohtani and Framber Valdez have excellent first time-through-the-order numbers and should have what it takes to deal with all the star hitters they face in the first inning.

Los Angeles Dodgers vs. New York Yankees YRFI: Tonight in LA is Clayton Kershaw vs. Luis Severino, a match that sounds better for the NRFI on paper.

The model likes the yes-runs side, though, mostly because by this point in his career, Kershaw has become a “feeling” pitcher who’s getting into games better and better.

Severino has a 1.59 ERA in two starts, but has xFIP and SIERA scores in the mid-four range, so it could be a step backwards for him too.

Baltimore Orioles vs. San Francisco Giants YRFI: Based on the odds, this is my favorite bet tonight. I’m shocked that we’re getting plus money here as both teams are top-heavy offensive players. Also, neither pitcher is particularly dominant the first time in the sequence.

MLB Power Rankings: Week 3

1. Atlanta Braves – Record: 12-4 (Week 2 rank: 1)

The Braves played their way to the top of the National League East in the first full week of the season without the services of Cy Young hopeful and starting pitcher Max Fried (out/hamstring). This week, the Braves were a perfect 5-0 to stay on top of the WagerTalk MLB Power Poll.

Shortstop Orlando Arcia (wrist) retired from Wednesday’s match against Cincinnati after his wrist was struck; he’s on the 10-day IL and it’s unclear how long he’ll be out.

Catcher Travis d’Arnaud (concussion) landed on the 7-day IL last Sunday after colliding with home plate.

OF Michael Harris II (back) had not been cleared for live batting practice and was able to activate today but his return is still in doubt.

With all the talk about the two young lefties for Atlanta this spring (Shuster and Dodd), it’s the vanilla-flavored Bryce Elder that plugged the hole in the levee.

His first 12 1/3 innings of work resulted in wins in Atlanta. Elder made consecutive scoreless quality starts and made a third round in an interleague matchup against the Royals on Saturday, resulting in the young right-hander being the record pitcher and extending his young-season record to 2-0.

Starter Kyle Wright, who led all baseball with 21 wins a season ago, was activated by the IL and took the ball for a three-inning start at Truist Park against the Reds Tuesday and again Sunday in Kansas City against the Royals . Wright was not involved in either decision, but the Braves won in both of Wright’s starts.

2. Tampa Bay Rays – Record: 14-2 (Week 2 rank: 2)

Rays ace Shane McClanahan hit six effective innings in his fourth straight win on Sunday, and the Tampa Bay Rays avoided a three-game win by beating the Toronto Blue Jays 8-1 on Sunday. The win ended the club’s two-game losing streak, Friday and Saturday night losses, the first and second of the season after the new season started 13-0.

Tampa Bay promoted one of the organization’s top picks, Taj Bradley, to his big league debut Wednesday against the Red Sox; The 22-year-old allowed three runs on five hits and a walk while striking out eight over five innings of work.

3. Milwaukee Brewers – Record: 11-5 (Week 2 rank: 5)

The Brewers won a sweep by the Mets and two-of-three by division rivals St. Louis Cardinals. Their NL-leading pitching team bare knuckled through an early schedule with good lineups. Starting rotation injuries were subsidized by a bullpen who performed above expectations with an ERA of under 1.50.

4. New York Yankees – Record: 10-6 (Week 2 rank: 8)

If New York could clone Gerrit Cole and challenge Alice to pull Groundhog Day out of the top and Mad Hatter’s conditions, flush and repeat Cole’s first three rounds (1.40 ERA, 0.93 WHIP and 1.0 bWAR). , the pinstripes would only need Anthony Volpe to play more like “The Captain” and less like a rookie they would challenge the Rays and the Braves for the top of the WagerTalk MLB mountain.

5. Texas Rangers – Record: 9-6 (Week 2 Placement: 6)

Rangers have gone from essentially invisible to a bullseye on their backs, taking three of four of the reigning NL Pennant winners in opening weekend, winning one of three at Wrigley Field and Harry Carry’s Cubs, winning a fistfight with the Baltimore Orioles and He took two of three World Series champions by passing both Fromber Valdez and Luis Garcia.

6. New York Mets – Record: 10-6 (Week 2 rank: 9)

26. Colorado Rockies – Record: 5-11 (Week 2 rank: 25)

The Rockies fall back just one spot despite working on a five-game losing streak that goes into this week’s Power Poll. The only reason they haven’t fallen further is because Washington lost four out of five, Detroit just finished a six-game slip and thrived against a porous San Francisco Giants roster, while Kansas City and Oakland were last both places in 2023 rankings until hell freezes over.

27th Washington Nationals – Record: 5-11 (Placement Week 2: 27)

The Nationals defeated the Cleveland Guardians 7-6 on Sunday to avert a three-game sweep and give away their 27th-place finish in the Power Poll to the Motown Tigers.

28. Detroit Tigers – Record: 5-9 (Placement Week 2: 28)

The Tigers have won three straight games from a 2-9 start. The three-game winning streak allows Detroit to fend off the Royals and the Athletics. At present.

29. Kansas City Royals – Record: 4-12 (Week 2 rank: 29)

The American League Central currently has three out of four division members at the bottom of the league’s home run rankings. The 27th, 28th, and 29th place finishers of the league’s 30 franchises, Kansas City, Detroit, and Cleveland, have combined 31 home runs in 2023. The 31 combined home runs are six fewer than the Tampa Bay Rays’ 37 Dingers in the season.

30. Oakland Athletics – Record: 3-13 (Week 2 Ladder: 30)

After getting throttled at home by the Kansas City Chiefs in Week 7, Jimmy Garoppolo and the San Francisco 49ers (3-4) find themselves in desperate need of a win on the road against Matthew Stafford’s Los Angeles Rams (3-3) in a game with huge NFC West ramifications.

The Rams have had their fair share of struggles during the 2022 season, but will Stafford, Cooper Kupp and Co. find some rhythm coming out of the bye in a wide-open division? Or can Garoppolo, Christian McCaffrey and Deebo Samuel pull off a tough win on the road? The game kicks off Sunday at 4:25 pm ET from SoFi Stadium.

Lorenzo Reyes: 49ers 28, Rams 20

This is an interesting matchup as both coaches know each other extremely well. But both teams have been so hot and cold this season, that I’m going to back the team that has the better defense — even though the Chiefs’ buzzsaw ran through them last week. And with a full week to incorporate Christian McCaffrey, I think the Niners cover as road favorites.

The 49ers got a rude awakening against the Chiefs last week in Christian McCaffrey’s debut, but their defense loves going up against Matt Stafford, Cooper Kupp and the Rams’ offense, which has yet to find its footing this season. I’ll take San Francisco on the road in this one.

Kansas City Chiefs at San Francisco 49ers Betting Odds, Picks, and Predictions for Week 7

The Chiefs (4-2) head into Levi’s Stadium to take on the 49ers (3-3) in an interconference clash that also serves as a rematch of Super Bowl LIV. Both teams come looking to rebound from Week 6 losses – Kansas City dropped a 24-20 decision at Arrowhead Stadium to the Bills, while San Francisco surprisingly fell to the Falcons by a 28-14 margin on the road.

The 49ers opened as 1.5-point underdogs when the line was first released last week, and the number had seen an interesting trajectory since. The Chiefs saw their projected advantage swell up to -3 following Week 6 outcomes, but the seismic development of the Christian McCaffrey acquisition by San Francisco predictably had an impact on the number once news broke late Thursday. Even though there still isn’t any certainty as to how many snaps, if any, McCaffrey will play, the number has taken a dive to as much as -1 as of Saturday morning.

The total has also seen some interesting movement, opening at a relatively modest 47.5 before dipping all the way to 46 in the immediate aftermath of Week 6. However, the number began an ascension shortly thereafter and has gotten back up as high as 49 following the McCaffrey news. These two teams combined for 50 points back in Super Bowl LIV while being led by the same quarterbacks, although a vital offensive weapon for KC, Tyreek Hill, is naturally no longer on the roster.

Kansas City Chiefs at San Francisco 49ers Betting Picks This Week

Concerns about the Chiefs being a much less potent offense without Tyreek Hill have largely proven unfounded through the first six games of the season, as Patrick Mahomes has proven he is unquestionably the one indispensable cog in the offensive machine. Mahomes is averaging 289.3 passing yards per game and owns a 17:4 TD:INT, but he does have a thorny matchup on his hands in this Week 7 interconference clash. The 49ers defense has been elite for the most part, and even last week’s surprising upset came with San Fran missing a slew of key players on that side of the ball.

The good news for the Niners is that Nick Bosa and Jimmie Ward both return for this key showdown, which should make a significant impact. San Francisco already comes in allowing the second-fewest passing yards per game (168.3) and yards per completion (8.3), and the Niners have also compiled the second-most sacks (23). Mahomes has been protected pretty well (11 sacks in six games), but KC’s offensive line will be facing pressure like it hasn’t seen all season, even versus Buffalo.

While Andy Reid doesn’t pay much mind to his running game unless he’s forced to, it’s also worth noting he’s unlikely to find much success whenever he does try to deploy his ground forces. The Niners are essentially just as difficult to run on as they are to pass against, coming in allowing an AFC-low 87.5 rushing yards per game and 3.1 RB yards per carry. San Fran also ranks No. 1 in both second-level and open-field yards allowed, making chunk plays against them on the ground virtually non-existent.

Meanwhile, the matchup shapes a bit more palatable for the Niners offense, with or without McCaffrey’s services. The Chiefs have allowed 266 passing yards per game, including 304.7 per contest in the last three. KC is also giving up an elevated 10.8 yards per completion in that latter span, while Jimmy Garoppolo has a fully healthy pass-catching corps at his disposal and is coming off having thrown for a season-high 296 yards against the Falcons.

Jeff Wilson is certainly no slouch, so if McCaffrey sits out altogether or has a very limited role, the Niners running game will still be in fine shape. Wilson is averaging 4.9 yards per carry and had gained at least 74 rushing yards in four consecutive starts before being limited to seven carries in Week 6 due to game script. The Chiefs have been tougher against the run than the pass, but they’re still allowing 4.2 RB yards per carry and hold a No. 23 ranking in second-level yards allowed. KC also is the most generous team in the league in terms of allowing receiving production to RBs, giving up an NFL-high 56 receptions and 390 receiving yards to the position.

The Niners, and their fan base for that matter, are undoubtedly reinvigorated by the McCaffrey acquisition and also hungry to atone for the ugly Week 6 loss. San Fran’s defense should be in much better health and form, and it will help keep matters very close at home, if not lead the Niners to an outright upset.

As mentioned, the 49ers get some key players on defense back this week, and that should make a significant difference. San Francisco should be able to hit some plays through the air against what has been an inconsistent Chiefs secondary, and KC’s passing attack, while potent, should have similar difficulty establishing series-to-series rhythm as it did for stretches of the Week 6 loss to the Bills.

San Francisco can be so mercurial and I still have the Chiefs as one of the three best teams in the NFL, despite their close loss to the Bills. Kansas City doesn’t tend to lose consecutive games under Andy Reid and Patrick Mahomes and because the Niners’ defense is as banged up as it is, it’s easy to see KC putting up points and covering, despite being on the road.

Patrick Mahomes threw two interceptions and now faces a vaunted 49ers defense that could be affected if San Francisco star defender Nick Bosa (groin) doesn’t play. Still, I take Mahomes’ firepower over Jimmy Garoppolo’s in this Super Bowl LIV rematch.
