During the Jackass Forever press tour, Johnny Knoxville repeatedly denied rumors that the film would be the final installment in the Jackass franchise.

And that may be true, although Knoxville & Co. are filming again, likely in the new series The Prank Patrol, according to a lawsuit filed Friday by a handyman who claims he was the object of a recent prank. The ABC comedy series, slated to premiere in 2023, stars Knoxville, along with Eric Andre and Gabourey Sidibe, playing pranks on unsuspecting people and then deconstructing how the pranks are pulled.

Khalil Khan filed the lawsuit in Long Beach Superior Court, claiming he was subjected to a “terrifying ordeal” after applying for a job at TaskRabbit in October.

According to the complaint, Khan went into a home for what he considered to be a simple repair job. He claims the homeowner asked him to fix a dimmer switch and then threatened to beat him up if he didn’t do it right, saying, “I know jiu-jitsu.”

Within minutes a lamp went out and a young girl ran into the room screaming, “You killed my pony.” Khan protested that he had done nothing, but the homeowner and the girl ushered him into a room where apparently a pony was kept on a life support machine.

Khan then looked outside and saw his car being towed away, according to the suit. He took out his phone to call the police, but one of the men told him that if he did, he would be arrested for cocaine possession and showed him a bag of white powder.

“At that point, the plaintiff was in a panic,” the lawsuit states. “Within minutes he was being threatened with beatings, told he had botched the repair, accused of murdering a pony, had his car taken without his permission and now told he would be arrested for possession of illegal narcotics”.

Knoxville then showed up and revealed that the whole thing was a prank and that all the participants were actors. Khan claims he was offered a few hundred dollars and should laugh the whole thing off.

“But the plaintiff was not amused and remains uninterested,” the complaint reads. “He has been badly shaken and traumatized by this episode.”

The lawsuit alleges that Khan suffered from lack of sleep, anxiety and emotional distress. He also fears he will face “embarrassment and ridicule” if the incident ever becomes public knowledge.

A call to the Knoxville production office was not immediately answered, and its representatives did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Jackass Forever was released in February and grossed $80 million worldwide.

Johnny Knoxville may be making a “Jackass” of himself again. The star of Hulu’s “Reboot” is reportedly filming a new prank-based project in Long Beach, according to an unlikely source — a lawsuit against the actor from a TaskRabbit handyman.

As reported by Variety, a handyman named Khalil Khan filed a suit against Knoxville in the Long Beach Superior Court for emotional distress after an alleged on-camera prank.

More from IndieWire

According to the lawsuit, Khan went to a home after signing up for a repair job on TaskRabbit in October, where the homeowner asked him to fix a dimmer switch and threatened to beat him up if he didn’t properly repair it, saying, ” I know jiu jitsu.” After the threat, Khan experienced a variety of bizarre occurrences: a lamp went out, and a girl showed up claiming Khan killed her pony and led him to a room where a horse was being put on life support, his car suddenly got towed, and he was told that if he called the police, he would be arrested for possession of cocaine inside the house.

“At this point, Plaintiff was in a panic,” the lawsuit states, per Variety. “In the span of just minutes, he had been threatened with being beaten up, told he botched the repair job, accused of murdering a pony, had his car taken without his permission, and was now being told that he would be arrested for possession of illicit narcotics.”

Eventually, Knoxville came onto the scene and revealed the people in the house were actors and the whole scenario was an elaborate prank. Khan alleges he was offered a few hundred dollars for his unwitting participation in the bit.

According to the suit, Khan suffered from lack of sleep, anxiety, and emotional distress after the incident, and fears that he will experience “embarrassment and ridicule” if the prank is released for public viewing.

Story continues

Reps for Knoxville did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

Although the suit doesn’t explicitly say the project is for “Jackass,” the description sounds similar to many pranks and stunts featured in the long-running franchise, which began with a 2000 MTV series that Knoxville created with Jeff Tremaine and Spike Jonze. The series, which is hosted by Knoxville, sees a cast of stunt performers playing a variety of complicated pranks on each other or embarking on dangerous stunts. The series spawned several spinoffs and four feature films, the latest of which, “Jackass Forever,” released in theaters this past February by Paramount Pictures.

“Forever,” which reunited Knoxville with the majority of the original cast minus the late Ryan Dunn, to whom the film is dedicated, was a financial success. The installment grossed over $80 million at the global box office on a $10 million budget.

Although some speculated that “Forever” may be the last “Jackass” film — the movie arrived 12 years after “Jackass 3D” in 2010 — during the press tour, Knoxville maintained their was potential for a future installation in the franchise. In a February interview with IndieWire, he said, “We could make another one, or we could not.”

Like many other San Francisco tech companies, Google has yet to return to its offices. With its campus on Embarcadero going largely unused, conceptual artist Danielle Baskin got to thinking about what type of business might swoop in on that kind of vacant real estate.

Given that Oct. 31 is just a little over a month away, the answer was obvious: Spirit Halloween, the costume store that moves into strip malls every year in the months proceeding the holiday.

Baskin, best known for her viral fake website Blue Check Homes or her app that connects strangers for phone conversations, happens to own a commercial-size printer from a previous sign-making business. So she put it to use by printing out a 10-foot vinyl replica of the Spirit Halloween logo, then ironed it onto fabric purchased from Mission Fabric Outlet. There wasn’t vector art of the logo online, Baskin said, so she hand-rendered it.

Conceptual artist Danielle Baskin temporarily installed a Spirit Halloween sign at the Google offices on Embarcadero.

Courtesy of Danielle Baskin

Then with the help of a few friends, she installed the banner over Google’s logo at the company’s San Francisco office. The group also put up official-looking construction signage and other Spirit Halloween ephemera, such as job flyers. It was largely done for a laugh, but the prank does have broader significance.

“Right before the pandemic, I had a studio space on Market Street and we got kicked out because they were changing ownership of the building,” Baskin told SFGATE over the phone from outside the Google office. “I’ve spent a lot of time thinking about unused real estate in San Francisco. So many people wish they had a wood shop, or space to make things. And there’s just so many empty weird lobbies with chairs that no one sits in, and offices where the employees don’t even come to work because they’re welcome to work from home anytime.”

A prop used by conceptual artist Danielle Baskin while recreating a Spirit Halloween store at Google’s San Francisco offices.

Courtesy of Danielle Baskin

Once they had installed the sign, Baskin and her crew of 10 pretended to be Spirit Halloween staffers. Dressed in construction uniforms, they carried around boxes and pretended to argue about their manager, hoping to have some silly interactions with pedestrians.

“We thought we would be doing a lot of interaction with people who work in the area, but it is a ghost town here. Which is actually where Spirit Halloween comes in. It’s like the grim reaper of dying industries,” said Baskin.

After about two hours, Google finally caught wind of the prank and a security team arrived… in the middle of our phone interview.

“Oh … someone with a walkie-talkie is approaching the sign,” said Baskin, while standing next to a dolly and stack of boxes. “OK great, I get to watch this unfold in real time. I wonder if they’ll come up to me and think that I did it. We should probably leave. OK, we’ve got a lot of security coming. I’ m going to get off the premises, just casually.”

Conceptual artist Danielle Baskin temporarily installed a Spirit Halloween sign at the Google offices on Embarcadero.

Courtesy of Danielle Baskin

Corresponding later via direct message, Baskin said that Google took down the sign and reported the incident but took no further action. She tried to convince the eight security guards on the scene to let her keep the sign to repurpose it, but as of time of publication, the location of the sign is unknown. Although the sign may be lost for good, the prank lasted longer than Baskin expected.

“It’s just a joke to point out all the empty space that sits here,” Baskin wrote. “It’s in a beautiful location too, this building overlooks the bridge and its such a beautiful area, but it’s totally unused. No one’s even in this courtyard, because I don’t think people feel welcome to hang out at Google headquarters.”

As for the actual Halloween holiday, Baskin isn’t yet sure how she’ll celebrate it, but the experience at Google was a nice teaser for Oct. 31

“I feel like I got to dress up with friends and pretend to do a load-in. So, that was like a mini Halloween,” she said.
