What’s Best of the Bay? Beyond thousands and thousands of voters expressing their love for the local people, places, and things that make this the Best Place on Earth, the annual Bay Guardian Best of the Bay (our 47th!) takes a temperature of the times. This is the 17th Best of the Bay I’ve edited, and I’ve seen the booms, busts, shifts, and slants of the city reflected in each one. This one was tough. So many winners from years past have tragically closed or left, so many categories had to be reconfigured so that they could be properly competitive in this time of online shopping, working from home, chain monopolies, not to mention stress about what’s happening in the world .

But it was so beautiful. So many of you voted for brilliantly San Francisco and Bay Area things, showing how much you care, and how much local businesses, arts organizations, music-makers, cocktail shakers, and everything else inside the Golden Gate matters to who we are and how we live. We have so many new and classic winners. We’re still here, dammit. Please join us to celebrate the winners and the runners up—as well as our sister site 48 Hills’ 9th anniversary!—at our Case Fling, Nov 3, 6pm-9pm at El Rio, SF. (More info here.) We’d love to party with you all, the true Best of the Bay. And hey, if you’d like to see this Bay Area tradition continue, please join 48 Hills as a member or donate today.

A recent poll of Bay Area residents found that 64% believe the region is on the “wrong track” — a record high in the eight-year history of the poll.

The poll was conducted by Bay Area firm EMC Research on behalf of the Bay Area Council, a group of business leaders in the region. 1,000 respondents were surveyed between March 2 and March 9, and the poll has a margin of error of 3.1 percentage points. EMC Research has conducted other recent polls on the recall elections in San Francisco.

Survey respondents were asked the question, “Do you feel things in the Bay Area are going in the right direction or do you feel things have gotten pretty seriously off on the wrong track?” Sixty-four percent replied with the “wrong track,” 21% replied with “right direction” and 15% said they didn’t know.

The survey has been conducted every year since 2014, and the share of respondents selecting “wrong track” has never been higher. The previous high was 57% in 2019, but that number fell to 54% in 2020 and 50% in 2021. The last time there were more responses for “right direction” than “wrong track” was 2015, when 55% of residents chose the former option, compared to 28% who chose the latter.

The top concerns for residents are homelessness, housing and crime/safety, in that order. Just 2% of respondents listed the COVID-19 pandemic as their top concern.

The percentage of respondents who said they are “likely to move out of the Bay Area in the next few years” is unchanged since last year at 48%.

You can look at the full survey findings from the Bay Area Council.

(The Center Square) – More than half of San Francisco Bay Area residents say they are considering moving out permanently in the next few years, according to a new report opinion poll carried out by the joint venture Silicon Valley Institute for Regional Studies.

The think tank has been publishing key figures in the Silicon Valley Index since 1995. The survey, the first the institute conducted, was produced in collaboration with the Bay Area News Group and Change Research.

The poll of voters in five Bay Area counties found that 56% of respondents said they were likely to leave the region within the “next few years,” while 44% said they were unlikely to leave the region; 14% said they wanted to move but couldn’t.

The underlying problem: cost of living and unaffordable housing. The majority – 84% – say the cost of living is the main reason for moving; 77% expressly name high housing costs; 62% name problems with the quality of life, 71% say the quality of life is worse today than it was five years ago.

“The mood is shared across the board – according to age, income, race and ethnic affiliation, according to home ownership, according to educational attainment,” the survey revealed.

“Rising house prices, rising homelessness, large income gaps and a host of sustainability challenges have made us nervous for some time,” said Russell Hancock, President of the Institute for Regional Studies, in the introduction to the 34-page report. “But if you add a highly contagious disease, you get a suffocating fear: 60 percent of the respondents say their life has become more stressful … 52 percent feel more isolated and alone, 66 percent are genuinely worried about the future.

“It is important to note that these feelings extend beyond the pandemic itself,” he said. “A high percentage of us are concerned about forest fires, drought and political polarization. 71 percent are of the opinion that the quality of life in Silicon Valley has deteriorated in the last five years. “

The pressure to leave the country is greater among residents who do not own property or are less educated. The majority of renters, 63%, say they are likely to move out, with 90% citing the cost of living and housing as the reason.

62% of those with less than a bachelor’s degree are more likely to leave, and 57% of households making less than $ 250,000 a year say they are likely to move.

Embold Research conducted the poll between Sept. 21-26, interviewing 1,610 registered voters from Santa Clara, San Mateo, Alameda, San Francisco, and Contra Costa counties. The survey has an error rate of +/- 2.8 percent.

OAKLAND (KPIX 5) – A poll by CBS News found that most Californians consider crime a major state issue, including more than two in three who they consider very important.

Crime is often a hot political issue, but how people see it often depends on their individual life experience. And now there are numbers to prove it.

CONTINUE READING: UPDATE: Cache Fire Destroys Dozen of Lake County Homes; 1,500 residents evacuated

CBS News commissioned a survey of 1,800+ Californians on major problems facing the state. Forest fires and the coronavirus topped the list with 77% and 72%, respectively.

“But crime is at the top, very close to the Californian hot topics at 68%,” said Anthony Salvanto, CBS News Elections and Surveys director.

Oakland is often in the news about crime problems, but even there there are differences in how people view the scale of the problem.

“I wouldn’t say crime is a bigger problem here than anywhere I’ve ever been,” said Aidan Thompson-McTaggart, a college student from Oakland. “That doesn’t bother me much.”

• MORE RESULTS: CBS News YouGov Poll – THE CALIFORNIA DREAM

Shawn Granberry is a lifetime resident of Oakland. “Crime is definitely an issue in Oakland,” Granberry told KPIX 5. “Anyone who says crime is not an issue in Oakland doesn’t live in Oakland.”

Granberry said Oakland has become a city of the haves and the dispossessed, and young blacks don’t feel they have a great economic future. At 72%, this feeling is strongly reflected in the survey results on crime prevention.

CONTINUE READING: A’s fall to White Sox, drop 4th straight

“The most important thing many Californians are saying is that more economic opportunities for people would help reduce crime,” said Salvanto. “Similarly, many Californians said that more mental health services could help.”

Mental health services scored 68% in response to crime prevention. Collin Vaughan agrees, saying it made a huge difference to him and likely saved his life.

“Because mental health treatment has changed my life,” said the 23-year-old. “Without the drugs, the therapists, everything … I would be dead now.”

About half of the survey said fewer guns would help, and the other half would like more money for the police. But the relationship between the police and the Oakland black community has not always been good.

“They don’t live here, they don’t go through church. They just drive their cars and show up when something happens, ”Granberry said. “You don’t know the community.”

The survey shows that 50% of those questioned feel “protected” by the police and 8% feel “threatened”. But 31% feel a mixture of both, like Tara Jones, who, as an African American, is not afraid of the police, but rather for the safety of her teenage son.

“When you live it, it changes the way you move, how you act, how you can actually enjoy the world,” said Jones. “Someone from a gated community probably enjoys the world very differently than my 6’8” and 18-year-old son. “

MORE NEWS: San Jose Reid-Hillview Airport will be closed due to lead levels following the vote by district regulators

Jones said there is no escaping the threat in her neighborhood. Crime seems to be a universal problem, but with individual implications.

San Francisco could soon become a ghost town if residents keep their word.

A new survey by the city’s Chamber of Commerce found that a whopping 40% of residents will want to leave the city in the next few years due to the rapidly deteriorating quality of life.

The survey showed that crime and homelessness are among the main concerns of residents. Residents do not feel safe in the city and do not trust local officials to make positive changes.

“For the second year in a row, 70% of residents believe that the quality of life in San Francisco has declined,” the chamber wrote in a press release on the survey. “Given the pandemic, these views are hardly surprising. What is striking in the survey results, however, is the strikingly high and constant number of respondents who see homelessness and crime as the main problems facing the city today.

“Around 88% see homelessness getting worse in recent years, and an overwhelming 80% see addressing this homeless crisis as a high priority,” the Chamber noted.

As a direct reprimand for the progressive city’s efforts to weaken the police force, 76% of respondents said increasing the number of police officers in high-crime neighborhoods should be a top priority.

A former resident who just moved from San Francisco to Palm Springs, Florida over the weekend spoke to KPIX-TV about precisely these issues.

“There’s nothing worse than seeing such a beautiful place in such a mess and I really thought I would be sad when the moving companies loaded the last container on Saturday and I’ve never been so relieved,” said Lindsay Stevens.

“I honestly think we’ve seen a massive decline in the quality of life over the past three years and that has only been improved by COVID,” she added. “Homelessness has been a serious problem, people don’t feel safe walking their dogs … the number of break-ins seems to be increasing all the time.”

Another resident, 24-year-old Minku Lee, told the news agency, “I think safety is a huge concern, even two years ago when I originally returned to the city, I never considered certain neighborhoods to be necessarily unsafe. “

He remembered falling victim to a homeless person just the last week while driving a group of friends to happy hour on 3rd Street near Oracle Park.

“He said that even an insult would have knocked me over violently, a slash would have stumbled me, really shocked about the incident,” reported Lee.

The upcoming mass exodus from San Francisco has actually been going on for a few years. In April, TheBlaze reported that of all major US cities, San Francisco lost the most residents in 2019 and 2020 – many of them moved to Florida or Texas.

According to a recent poll, almost half of San Francisco’s residents plan to leave the city due to rising crime and the deteriorating quality of life.

The survey of 500 San Franciscans commissioned by the San Francisco Chamber of Commerce found that just over 40% of residents plan to leave the city in the next few years.

In addition, 8 out of 10 respondents said that city crime has increased, and almost 90% of respondents said they believe the homelessness crisis has worsened. About three-quarters of San Francisco residents said their quality of life had declined over the past year.

About 88% see homelessness worsening in recent years and an overwhelming 80% see addressing this homelessness crisis as a high priority. ”

Lindsay Stevens, who has lived in San Francisco for 12 years and recently left town, told CBS Bay Area that she felt relieved when she loaded her things into a moving truck.

“There’s nothing worse than seeing such a beautiful place in such a mess,” she said. “I really thought I would be sad when the movers loaded the last container on Saturday, and I’ve never been so relieved.”

The story goes on

Police statistics show that certain criminal offenses have increased in California’s fourth largest city, including a significant increase in car break-ins, which has increased by as much as 700% in some areas.

The San Francisco police chief pointed to two factors: too little police on the streets and criminals released from prison because of relaxed law enforcement.

In the poll, 76% of San Franciscans said that “increasing the number of police officers in high-crime neighborhoods should be a high priority for the city.”

San Francisco has always been a passing city, a place where people come to work for a couple of years and maybe find a good time or romance and then go to a cheaper and more boring place when it comes to “settling down” “.

Well, somewhere around 40 or 50 percent of the people who live here – people who live here, who answer surveys – say they want to leave the country in the next few years. And many of these people have told pollsters that the biggest problems facing the city these days are crime, homelessness and “street behavior”.

The SF Chamber of Commerce released the results of its annual CityBeat poll Thursday, which asks San Francisco voters a series of questions about the state of the city and their perception of it.

This year’s survey found, like last year, 70% of city dwellers who say that the quality of life in the city has decreased. 80% of residents surveyed said tackling homelessness must be a high priority for the city, and 88% said the problem had worsened in recent years.

71% also said that “road behavior” has deteriorated. And 80% of San Franciscans support extending conservatory laws and making it easier for the mentally ill to be sent for treatment.

Additionally, 76% of San Franciscans said increasing the number of police officers in high-crime neighborhoods should be a high priority for the city, and 60% supported prioritizing funding for police academy courses and recruiting new police officers.

“San Francisco has suffered over the past year, highlighting and exacerbating issues such as homelessness, road conditions and safety concerns,” Chamber President and CEO Rodney Fong said in a statement. “Public infrastructure and the ability to handle road conditions have also pushed their limits, and it’s not surprising that residents have a strong sense of it.”

The Chamber of Commerce unveiled a data dashboard earlier this year listing 311 complaint dates across the city, and overall the data shows that complaints about theft and homeless tent camps have been on the decline since 2019.

This is just the latest poll from a local organization that has registered the growing public perception of worsening crime and found that many San Franciscans dream of escaping it all. As reported by the SF Business Times, a recent survey by the Bay Area Council found that nearly half of respondents plan to flee California entirely in the coming years.

Dignity Health was the presenting sponsor of the chamber’s survey, and a Dignity representative, Mark Klein, flipped the survey data on people who want to go to Business Times this way: “They are expressing their intentions to move. We still have the ability to “make changes that keep them here.”
