SAN FRANCISCO – When the Giants team bus arrived at Oracle Park late Sunday night, finally home from a six-game tour of Atlanta and Cleveland, someone was waiting to pick them up.

Farhan Zaidi, the club's top baseball executive, had news he wanted to deliver in person.

Austin Slater, the Giants’ longest-serving player, was traded to Cincinnati.

The departure of the outfielder, who was drafted by the previous regime in 2014, made his debut in 2017 and became one of the most productive platoon players in the major leagues, with a batting average of .275 and an OPS of .804 in 872 plate appearances against left-handed pitchers, was just a sign of things to come.

Between the final out of their road trip and the start of their final home game before the All-Star break, the Giants reshuffled the deck with clear intent. Less than 72 hours later, they parted ways with another veteran, shortstop Nick Ahmed, who was scheduled to play before Tuesday's series opener against the Toronto Blue Jays.

“We've talked a lot about giving some of our young players opportunities and adding athleticism to the squad. One of the best ways to do that is to bring the young players forward and give them roles,” Zaidi said before Tuesday's game. “More than anything, this is a vote of confidence in these guys.”

That the move comes the same week that one of their young outfielders, Heliot Ramos, was named an All-Star was a coincidence, but the performance that led to that recognition gives the Giants some confidence that their other young prospects — most notably Luis Matos and Tyler Fitzgerald — can handle bigger roles just as well.

They enter their final home game before the All-Star break with three wins in their last four series against playoff contenders, but still three games under .500. Zaidi said the Giants' record is “a real cause for dissatisfaction” and “we can say we feel like we have positive momentum, (but) we're still three games under .500. We have to find a way to get better.”

With three weeks to go before the July 30 transfer deadline, Zaidi hinted that those improvements would come more from within. Their beleaguered starting lineup is slowly getting back into shape after Blake Snell returned from the injured list on Tuesday and Robbie Ray and Alex Cobb will join him soon after the All-Star break.

On the outfield side, the Giants expect playing time in right field to be split between Matos and Mike Yastrzemski and at shortstop between Fitzgerald and Brett Wisely, who, like Ramos, has proven to be a revelation, giving management the confidence to part ways with a pair of flagging veterans.

“As we look at some of these internal options, some of these young players that we think can continue to bring energy to this team and help us, I think it's fair to say that giving them as many opportunities as possible in the final weeks before the deadline will help us,” Zaidi said. “I think we have areas of depth and areas where we're a little weak. When I look at our team, I think we have pretty solid players at pretty much every position on the field. …

“There's nothing that jumps out at us as a stopgap measure, we just take whatever is available on the commercial market. When you're in it, there's always the expectation and pressure to do something to change the mix, but we have to be careful that whatever we do is a meaningful improvement.”

Originally signed as a backup to promising shortstop Marco Luciano in spring training, Ahmed later won the opening day job and appeared in 52 games, maintaining his reputation as a strong defensive player, delivering some timely hits and maintaining a .232 batting average and .581 OPS.

After battling injuries to his throwing arm and side in spring training and then missing three weeks of the regular season with a concussion, Slater battled through his most difficult season at the plate, posting a .200 batting average with a .575 OPS in 43 games, but that didn't diminish his impact in the locker room.

Slater served as the league's player representative to the players' union until mid-last year and was “the biggest piece of the puzzle for us” as the league navigated the COVID-19 pandemic, said his platoon partner Yastrzemski.

“He was there at every meeting,” Yastrzemski said. “It's very selfless things like that. He wanted to make sure everyone in the league was taken care of. I think that was his character overall, a guy who maybe didn't get on the field as much as he could have and was always looking out for the team and everyone's well-being. So it's tough to miss that presence in the locker room, but we still have a great group here.”

Zaidi said he was saying goodbye to a player of Slater's stature: “It may not change the path you're on, but it's one you want to show the utmost respect for as you go down it. It's a big deal. I drove here because I wanted to have this conversation with him personally (with manager Bob Melvin).”

Yastrzemski, who holds the title of longest-serving member of the team, learned shortly after Slater that he would be getting a new teammate. For the past six years, he and Slater have held down the fort in the outfielder's corner of the clubhouse.

“I grabbed my bag and walked out when he said goodbye. I was like, 'What do you mean?'” Yastrzemski recalled. “He was like, 'I just got traded.' Like, what? It happened really fast and it was a shock, but that's baseball. You just show up the next day and keep doing your job.”

On Tuesday, Slater’s old locker got a new resident: Ramos.

— Where does the top candidate come from? Marco Luciano fit into this youth movement? In 54 games at Triple-A Sacramento, he has a .230 batting average with a .687 OPS and has split his time between shortstop, second baseman and designated hitter. “But we're not giving up the shortstop role for him,” Zaidi said.

— As for the reinforcements the Giants want to add in the second half of their rotation, Robbie Ray is closer than Alex Cobb. Ray was expected to throw about 65 pitches for Single-A San Jose on Tuesday, which Melvin called a “big day for Robbie.” Cobb will follow Ray on Wednesday with his third rehab start for San Jose, but Melvin said the right-hander will need “three or four” more, while Ray is “right on the fence.”

The Oakland Athletics no longer have to wonder where they will play in the next few seasons. That won't make the long goodbye any easier.

The A's responded announcing that this will be their last year in Oakland with a mixture of sadness and relief.

“At least as a player, you know where you’re going,” outfielder Seth Brown said Friday before a game against the Tigers in Detroit. “There's obviously a lot of moving parts, a lot of things that we're not privy to, so it's just been kind of a waiting game for us. Where are we going? Where will we be? So I think.” With that knowledge alone, at least we know where we're going to play next year.

Vivek Ranadivé, owner of the Triple-A Sacramento River Cats, and John Fisher, owner of the Oakland Athletics, announced Thursday that the A's will temporarily relocate to Sutter Health Park in West Sacramento for at least three seasons. The A's move to Las Vegas after a new ballpark is built.

The River Cats, affiliated with the San Francisco Giants, will continue to play at the same facility.

Fisherman was unable to reach an agreement with Oakland city officials to extend the lease at the Oakland Coliseum, which expires at the end of this season. The A's have played in the city since 1968.

“There's a direction now that we've talked a lot about,” Oakland A's manager Mark Kotsay said. “We have time to think about what that really means from an organizational perspective, about the history we've had in Oakland, since this is the last season. There are a lot of emotions behind it.”

It will cause turmoil not only among the players and staff, but also among the members of the organization who work behind the scenes.

“At the end of the day, we know where we’re going to be in the next three seasons after the end of this year, and that in itself gives a little bit of stability,” Kotsay said. “At the same time, it’s challenging in some ways in the present to think about the finality of this organization in Oakland.”

Sacramento will be a much smaller environment to host a major league team. Ranadivé said the River Cats venue currently seats 16,000 when counting the stands, the grass behind center field and standing room only.

First baseman Ryan Noda is concerned about facilities. He hopes significant improvements will be made, similar to what the Toronto Blue Jays did at Buffalo's Triple-A facility. The Blue Jays played at Sahlen Field in Buffalo in 2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic.

“New walls, new dugouts, new locker rooms – everything they needed to be a big league stadium,” said Noda, who played a few games in Sacramento as a minor leaguer. “As long as we can do something like that, it will be fine. But it will definitely be different than playing in stadiums that hold 40,000 spectators.”

Kotsay is confident the upgrades will happen.

“I know it’s going to be Major League Baseball quality,” he said. “It has to be Major League Baseball quality. I know the Players Association will make sure that happens, just like they did in Buffalo.”

The A's will have to deal with this for the rest of this season Small home crowd and disappointed fans.

“We feel sad for the fans, the die-hard fans that always come to our games, always support us, always support the guys that wear the jersey,” Noda said.

More moves are coming around the NFL.

Teams looking to bolster their rosters for the second half have until Tuesday’s trade deadline at 4 p.m. EDT.

Several established veterans could end up switching uniforms. There were a slew of trades at this time last season.

The Philadelphia Eagles couldn’t wait to upgrade at safety, acquiring two-time All-Pro Kevin Byard from the Tennessee Titans earlier this week. Byard is a significant addition at a position that was depleted by injury and the departure of C.J. Gardner-Johnson in free agency.

“Obviously, I feel like I’m a great player, but at the end of the day, it’s not really about that,” Byard said Wednesday. “It’s about what I do now that I’m here. I had a great career in Tennessee, but I’m a Philadelphia Eagle now and that’s what it’s more about — moving forward, making plays and winning games.

“This is my eighth season and I’m feeling really good, coming off a bye week, too. I’m definitely feeling fresh right now. This team has a great culture and I’m just looking to add to that. It feels good to wake up 6-1.”

Here are five players who could end up finding new homes:

DERRICK HENRY

The Titans (2-4) already traded one star on defense so dealing their best offensive player wouldn’t be a surprise. Henry’s production is down on a struggling offense. He’s run for 425 yards, a 4.3-yard average and three touchdowns. The 29-year-old Henry can be a free agent after the season so he should be considered a half-season rental.

The Ravens (5-2) and Buccaneers (3-3) are potential leading suitors for Henry. Baltimore lost running back J.K. Dobbins in Week 1. Lamar Jackson is their leading rusher followed by Gus Edwards.

The Buccaneers have the fourth-worst rushing offense in the league and only one team is averaging fewer yards per carry. Henry makes sense for Tampa Bay even though the team wants to build around younger players. The NFC South is wide open and the two-time reigning division champs are in the mix.

Don’t discount the Cowboys (4-2) despite Jerry Jones’ declaration that Dallas isn’t making calls. For the right price, the Eagles (6-1) could pull off yet another deal with the Titans. Getting wide receiver A.J. Brown from Tennessee in 2022 helped elevate Jalen Hurts into an MVP runner-up.

CHASE YOUNG

The No. 2 overall pick in 2020 could be on the way out in Washington. The Commanders (3-4) already declined to pick up Young’s fifth-year option. He has five sacks in six games, but Washington has already given a big contract to defensive tackle Daron Payne and has defensive lineman Montez Sweat also due for a new deal.

The Dolphins (5-2), Lions (5-2) and Jaguars (5-2) are among the top possibilities if the Commanders deal Young.

BRIAN BURNS

A two-time Pro Bowl edge rusher, Burns is in the final year of his contract and the winless Carolina Panthers (0-6) need to accumulate more draft capital after trading a slew of picks to move up to No. 1 to take Bryce Young this season.

Burns has four sacks this season and would be a significant addition for teams such as Miami, Detroit, Buffalo (4-3), Jacksonville (5-2) and even San Francisco (5-2). The Panthers had an opportunity to move Burns last year before the deadline but they held on and aren’t winning with him.

JUSTIN SIMMONS

The three-time, second-team All-Pro safety is among several Broncos (2-5) who could be on the move. Denver is headed nowhere and trading veterans for draft capital makes sense.

Simmons is not only a solid, do-it-all player but he’s a strong leader in the locker room and would fit nicely with contending teams. The Seahawks (4-2), Bengals (3-3) and Steelers (4-2) could have interest.

MARQUISE BROWN

“Hollywood” Brown already was traded once from Baltimore to Arizona last year. He hasn’t matched the production he had with the Ravens in 2021, but only had 11 games with Kyler Murray last season.

Brown has 32 catches for 383 yards and three TDs this season and would be a big boost for an offense that needs a speedy receiver to complement its group. The Chiefs (6-1) seem to be the best fit, but the Chargers (2-4) and even Panthers could be among many suitors.

Musical theater. You either love it or you hate it. Shakespeare. You either love him or you can’t stand him. The great thing about Ukiah Players Theater’s season opener, “Something Rotten!” is that it will please both the lovers and the haters.

“Something Rotten!” Is a musical comedy derived from a book by John O’Farrell and Karey Kirkpatrick, with music and lyrics by Karey and Wayne Kirkpatrick. The Shakespeare-infused sendup played 708 performances on Broadway and was nominated for 10 Tony Awards including Best Musical, and won a Tony for Best Featured Actor in a Musical.

Jenny Peterman and Maria Monti are co-directing UPT’s performance, with choreography by Maria Monti, musical direction by Hannah Peterman and Erika Brewer and costume design by Judy and Jenny Peterman. This show features live music performed by “The Rotten Band:” Hannah Peterman, Tony Melville, Keith Feigan, Erika Brewer and Treaston Shmuckley. The show is underwritten by John Chan Plumbing, Black Oak Coffee Roasters and Ukiah Natural Foods Co-op.

“Something Rotten!” is an over-the-top spoof of both Shakespeare and musicals.

“I watched the show during quarantine, and laughed and laughed and laughed,” says Peterman. “I was committed that this would be UPT’s first musical when we came out of quarantine.”

Tim Fischer plays the role of Nick Bottom – one of two brothers who are writers and contemporaries of William Shakespeare. Students of Fischer, who moonlights as an English instructor at Ukiah High, will confirm his obsession with Shakespeare in real life. So this role couldn’t have been more perfect for him.

“The comedy has a Mel Brooks-ish, Frankenstein type of humor. It’s definitely dorky, and for those who get the references and layers of all the musical and Shakespearian jokes, there will be a lot of laughing,” Fisher smiles.

However, says Peterman, the show is laugh-out-loud funny regardless of whether you have read Shakespeare or seen even one musical theater show. Peterman gives the show a PG-13 rating. “We’d like parents to accompany their 13-and-up kids. There’s a little bit of randy innuendo in the show,” she notes.

Chuck Mordock plays Nigel Bottom, Nick’s love-sick brother, whose prose comes to the attention of Shakespeare, played by someone who will not be revealed in this story!

“When I heard the opening song, I had to audition,” said Mordock. “I’ll be in anything where I get to sing, ‘We have the latest gadgets and appliances.’ The humor is utterly tongue in cheek and it’s an incredible homage to Broadway.”

The cast – many of whom perform multiple roles – are Maria Monti, Nena Saucedo, Lilly Mayfield, Rayna Matthews, Eddie Haehl, Blare Elliot, Heidi Peterman, Kyra Cash, Kayla Harrison, Traci Hunt, Grey Wolfe-Smith, Pete Winslow, Lalo Torres, Audrey Sherf, Hannah Hinrichs and Sean Powell. Rayna Matthews is an incredible new addition to the UPT family and is not to be missed.

“These are choice performers. Just a superb cast. There is so much chemistry between Tim and Chuck, who are veteran actors but have never actually acted side by side,” says Peterman.

Choreographer Maria Monti is amazed by the cast’s talent.

“There’s lots of dancing in all styles in this show. It’s really a mishmash of theater dances and includes dance styles that audiences will recognize.” Monti makes a special appearance in the show, and taught several cast members tap dancing. “Tim Fischer took my second semester tap course at Mendocino College, and he’s doing great.”

“I’m dancing a little bit better than a sack of potatoes,” smiles Fischer.

This is Hannah Peterman’s first time as a musical director.

“Working with a live band is wonderful,” Peterman notes. She reads music and is the musical director for her church. “I’ve been thrown into a group of rock musicians who don’t read music, and the theater vernacular is not familiar to me, so I’m aiming to get them to hear what I’m seeing,” she smiles.

“They are absolutely wonderful,” says Monti.

Audiences will love the surprise Shakespeare cast member, says Peterman.

“Our Shakespeare is more Prince than Jaggar. This Shakespeare is a rock star. There are quite a few ‘80’s rock references. For our show, we flipped the art direction and put some funk into Shakespeare, who has soul and a personal soundtrack. All I’ll say about our Shakespeare is that they are a new face to the theater community, but someone you might recognize.”

Despite the dozens of modern theater references, Peterman chose to keep the costumes in the 1590’s time period.

“The costumes are fabulous. My mom flew out from Oregon to help with them. We were able to create Farthingales out of dollar store materials to keep the dresses light, because there are layers and layers of skirts. We’ve had tons of costumes and fabric donated over the years, so we sorted through everything and did a housecleaning project at the same time, which made the costumes affordable and definitely reusable for another production.”

This article won’t spoil the fun, but theater nerds everywhere try to identify the scores of references to other musicals throughout the show, including Cats, The Music Man, South Pacific, Chicago, Annie, Jesus Christ Superstar and Guys and Dolls – to name just a few.

“The feedback we’re getting is that many people saw the show in Broadway or San Francisco, and can’t wait to see it again. Come and enjoy us making fun of ourselves, and laugh yourself silly,” Peterman concludes.

The next shows in the UPT season are “Harvey,” directed by Eric Ward, opening Feb. 16, and “Through the Looking Glass,” directed by Traci Hunt, opening April 12.

Auditions for “Harvey” are being held in conjunction with Mendocino College’s “12th Night the Musical” auditions on Dec. 9 at 10 a.m.. Harvey auditions will be held in the college’s Little Theatre, and 12th Night auditions will be held in the dance rooms. No roles for Harvey are precast, so Peterman encourages any interested folks to try out.

“Something Rotten!” runs from Nov. 17 through Dec. 10. A new feature for this season is the option to purchase punch cards, which will give theatergoers a 15- to 25 percent discount on ticket prices. Buckle up, this won’t be the only defensive end on the list.

The Randy Gregory trade probably takes the 49ers out of the running for a player like Hunter, who is a free agent after this season. He’s been dominant in 2023 though with 21 pressures and eight sacks per Pro Football Focus.

Adding him to an already strong pass rush would set the 49ers up to withstand either an injury on the defensive front, or an injury offense where Hunter could help elevate their defense significantly enough that they can withstand a major offensive step backward.

Had the 49ers wanted to snag Hunter they probably would have done so by now, but it’s something worth keeping an eye on if Gregory or any of San Francisco’s other DEs struggle at some point in the two weeks before the trade deadline.

In 2021, the San Francisco Giants penned one of the most remarkable seasons in recent baseball history, culling a 107-win juggernaut from a roster of journeymen and unknown veterans. As the 2023 season begins, the Giants are merely a roster of journeymen and unheralded veterans.

As Brandon Crawford marks the Giants’ last game of earlier glory years, this is perhaps baseball’s most anonymous and mediocre team, a wasteland of mediocre veterans like Michael Conforto and Sean Manaea. At 27-25, they’re pretty much average on offense and defense. Aside from Crawford and top player Logan Webb, the Giants are essentially a faceless, shapeless entity designed to win exactly 85 games. So here are the three giants that the San Franciscans are already fed up with.

3.Brandon Crawford

Not even two years ago, Brandon Crawford was ranked fourth in National League MVP picks, hitting 24 homers and hitting an .895 OPS at the shortstop with a Gold Glove-caliber defense. Now he’s bad. He’s arguably the worst everyday player in the majors — if he’s still an everyday player at all. In 29 games (he missed a lot of time in May with a calf strain), he averaged .172 with an OPS of .575, which would be fourth-worst in the league if he had enough at-bats to qualify. Worse, this doesn’t really feel like a coincidence — it feels like Crawford’s new reality. Although Crawford is admittedly hampered by injuries, he’s also 36 and well past his prime.

Most significantly, Crawford achieves by far the highest performance of his career. This season, Crawford has hit in 33 percent of his plate appearances; his previous high (or low, I guess) was 24.4 percent in 2020. Likewise, Crawford is also having its worst fielding season. While 29 games isn’t big enough to really gauge a player’s fielding ability, it’s clear that Crawford lost a step at shortstop. Never the fastest or most agile player, Crawford has blossomed into an elite defender due to his strong arm and skillful positioning. However, since the shift was off-limits, Crawford’s limited range came into its own. Since Baseball Savant introduced Outs Above Average in 2017, Crawford has been one of Major League Baseball’s most consistent elite defensemen, never ranking below the 88th percentile from 2017-2022. Now he’s in the 24th percentile.

Certainly Brandon Crawford has built up too much goodwill for Giants fans to claim his head this early in the season; He is a four-time All-Star who has featured prominently on two World Series champion teams. However, if Crawford continues to struggle, it’s only a matter of time before the good memories can stop fans from wishing him a happy release.

2.Michael Comfort

After the Giants criticized Aaron Judge as a free agent and broke their agreement with Carlos Correa, their plans for a massive, spectacular addition to their offseason roster fell through. Rather than lure a well-paid All-Star to the Bay Area, the Giants chose Michael Conforto and signed the injury-prone outfielder to a two-year, $36 million deal in hopes he could regain the form he thrived on 88 homers with an .856 OPS from 2017–19 with the New York Mets.

In his first season with the Giants, Conforto did well; His .236 batting average is just below what the Giants were hoping for, but his 11 home runs are the most on the roster and his 116 OPS+ shows he’s a slightly above average hitter. Still, his performance doesn’t match his status as the second-highest-paid player on the team and is a far cry from what Aaron Judge (the Giants’ real target) is doing with the New York Yankees.

In addition, Conforto is a terrible defender. Confined to right field, Conforto doesn’t have the speed or instinct to make a positive impact in outfield. According to Baseball Savant, he ranks in the 29th percentile for sprint speed and 37th percentile in outfielder leap, putting him in the 19th percentile overall for Outs Above Average.

1. Sean Manaea

An all-starting pitcher for the first seven years of his career, Sean Manaea faced the Giants’ greatest humiliation: a demotion in the bullpen. During his previous stints at Oakland and San Diego, Manaea was never exactly an ace, but he was the kind of reliable, innings-guzzling starter that every good team needs. In San Francisco, his command was so scattered and his performance so poor that he was transformed into an overpaid, overqualified midfielder. Manaea’s overall stats (2-2, 6.61 ERA) are poor, but his performance as a starter was particularly annoying. In his six starts, Manaea has a 7.54 ERA and opposing batters have a .971 OPS against him; For reference, Sean Murphy has an OPS of .970, which is the sixth best in baseball. Luckily, Manaea has done well in his recent appearances outside of the pen, giving hope that he can still turn his season around.

Like Michael Conforto, Manaea was one of the Giants’ key offseason moves, signing a two-year, $25 million deal with the Giants. And like Conforto, Manaea wasn’t worth the investment.

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) — Vladimir Guerrero Jr. had six RBIs and the Toronto Blue Jays ended a five-game losing streak Tuesday night with a 20-1 win over the Tampa Bay Rays, scoring their last 10 runs against position players.

Guerrero gave Toronto a first-round lead with an RBI single over Taj Bradley (3-1), hit a runs-scoring single in the fifth that opened a 10-0 lead, and hit a 423-foot in the ninth Grand Slam against Luke Raley.

All 12 Toronto batters in the game had hits, and the Blue Jays finished the game with 27 hits — the most since they hit 29 in a 28-5 win over Boston on July 22.

Tampa Bay started with 170 with the second fewest runs allowed in the majors, losing the most runs since the 8-20 loss in Boston on Aug. 11, 2021.

George Springer had four hits and Bo Bichette, Whit Merrifield, Guerrero and Danny Jansen had three each. Springer hit his seventh home run, a solo drive on the third.

NEW YORK (AP) — Aaron Judge hit a home run to equalize in the ninth inning and rookie Anthony Volpe hit a sacrifice flight in the tenth inning against Bryan Baker (3-2) for the winning run as the New Yorkers streaked past Baltimore.

Harrison Bader hit a home run to start New York’s comeback from an early 4-0 deficit, and Judge freed Gerrit Cole for his first loss in 11 starts this season.

After a 6-1 away game at home, the Yankees (30-20) won their fifth straight win in the opener between AL East rivals.

Cedric Mullins and Gunnar Henderson scored against Cole for Baltimore, who suffered a three-game win in Toronto.

Michael King (1-1) secured the win in two innings without a hit, scoring three.

DODGERS 8, BRAVES 1

ATLANTA (AP) — Bobby Miller allowed a five-inning run on his big league debut and Los Angeles beat Atlanta.

JD Martinez and Jason Heyward hit home runs for the Dodgers, who also got three RBIs from Will Smith.

Spencer Strider (4-2) fanned out 11 hitters to take his MLB-leading strikeout total to 97 – his fourth start this season with double-digit Ks and 10th in his young career. He allowed four runs, two of them earned, in six innings.

Miller (1-0) allowed four hits, walked one and knocked out five while consistently hitting 100 mph with his fastball.

RANGERS 6, PIRATES 1

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Texas’ Nathan Eovaldi threw a full game for the second time in five starts after throwing just two throws in the first 226 of his major league career.

Eovaldi (6-2) allowed six hits, hit out five and walked one, his fifth straight start in at least seven innings.

Josh Jung hit his 11th home run in his first full season with the majors and gave Rangers a five-run lead by run eight.

Texas won four out of five. Pittsburgh has tied its last eight games after losing 11 of 12 and has not won a series since winning two of three games in Washington on April 29-30.

Rich Hill (4-4) gave up five runs with seven hits in 5 1/3 innings with a season-high nine strikeouts.

PADRES 7, NATIONAL 4

WASHINGTON (AP) — Juan Soto hit his ninth home run and had three hits to start a three-game stint with his former team as San Diego beat Washington.

Jake Cronenworth followed up Soto’s solo shot with a two-run homer two batters later in the seventh inning as the Padres scored four times against Nationals relief player Erasmo Ramirez (2-2).

San Diego’s Yu Darvish (3-3) allowed back-to-back home runs against CJ Abrams and Lane Thomas in the fifth inning, but no further damage in a six-inning attempt.

Josh Hader hit a scoreless ninth on his 12th save from 14 chances.

DIAMONDBACKS 4, PHILLIES 3

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Corbin Carroll hit a single in the starting shot for his third hit in the eighth inning and Arizona beat Philadelphia for its ninth win in 11 games.

At 29-20, Arizona went nine games over .500 for the first time since September 11, 2018, when they were 77-68.

Lourdes Gurriel Jr. extended his hitting streak to 16 games — the longest active streak in the majors — with a leadoff double in game eight against Seranthony Dominguez (1-2). After advancing to third position on a pass from JT Realmuto, Gurriel found Carroll’s single to the left through a tucked-in infield.

Reliever Jose Ruiz (2-0) secured the win and Miguel Castro made his fifth save with a clean ninth goal.

GIANT 4, TWINS 3

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Michael Conforto doubled up to start a rally in the sixth inning and got the go-ahead for the two-run home run in the seventh inning as San Francisco edged past Minnesota.

The Giants have won seven of eight games. Alex Cobb (4-1) finished seven innings for the third time in four starts this month, working on a double home run from Byron Buxton in the first inning and a solo shot from Michael Taylor in the fifth inning.

After Jorge López (1-2) scored the seventh, Thairo Estrada took the lead with a brace and hit Conforto’s tenth home run of the season.

Camilo Doval threw a ninth non-hit with his 13th save in 14 attempts.

ANGELS 4, RED SOX 0

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) — Mike Trout hit a two-run home run and Griffin Canning allowed two hits in seven innings as Los Angeles beat Boston.

Mickey Moniak hit a home run for the second game in a row and Matt Thaiss also went deep for the Angels, who have won three straight games and four of five.

Canning (3-2) had five strikeouts and three walkouts.

Brayan Bello (3-2) fended off solo homers from Moniak and Thaiss in his seven innings. Trout hit a home run in the eighth over Joely Rodriguez.

ROCKIES 5, MARLINS 4

DENVER (AP) — Charlie Blackmon doubled in a fifth inning with four runs, Jurickson Profar extended his streak on base to 31 games and Colorado spoiled 20-year-old Eury Pérez’s away debut for Miami.

Elías Díaz had three goals for Colorado. The Rockies won the first two of the four games.

Pérez (1-1) allowed four runs — three earned — on four hits in 4 1/3 innings.

Garrett Cooper’s two-run homer with two outs in the sixth inning chased starter Austin Gomber (4-4). Soler’s RBI double in the ninth set made it a one-run play, but Pierce Johnson closed it out with his tenth save.

MARINERS 3, ATHLETICS 2

SEATTLE (AP) — JP Crawford and Ty France hit back-to-back homers in a three-run fifth inning, and Seattle gave Oakland its sixth straight loss and 14th in 16 games.

The A’s fell to 10-40, matching the 1932 Boston Red Sox and 1897 St. Louis Browns, for the fourth-worst 50-game start in big league history.

Marco Gonzales (4-1), who allowed five hits with four strikeouts in six innings. Trevor Gott, Justin Topa and Paul Sewald each batted an inning without a hit. Sewald stayed perfect with 10 save chances.

Luis Medina (0-3) suffered defeat.

CUBS 7, METS 2

CHICAGO (AP) — Christopher Morel, Matt Mervis and Seiya Suzuki hit a home run and Chicago chilled New York.

Mervis had three RBIs and Drew Smyly (5-1) had four hits in the sixth inning.

Morel extended his home run streak to five games with a solo shot against Stephen Nogosek in the seventh. He was the first player on such a winning streak for the Cubs since Sammy Sosa in June 1998.

Tylor Megill (5-3) allowed six runs, four earned, in 3 2/3 innings for the Mets, ending their five-game winning streak. Pete Alonso hit his best 18th home run in the big league for New York.

BREWER 6, ASTROS 0

MILWAUKEE (AP) — Joey Wiemer and Owen Miller hit a home run, Colin Rea combined for a five-hitter with four relievers and Milwaukee halted Houston’s eight-game winning streak.

Rea (1-3) allowed four hits in 5 1/3 innings. Houston was hidden for the second time.

JP France (1-1) gave up two runs (one earned) and five hits in 5 2/3 innings.

CLEVELAND (AP) — Romy González’s two-run double against rookie starter Logan Allen (1-2) broke a 2-2 tie in the seventh inning, sending Chicago past Cleveland.

Yasmani Grandal hit a home run for the White Sox, who started 7-21 but have won six of eight games.

The Chicago Rally helped Dylan Cease (3-3) win for the first time since April 10 – a span of eight starts. The right-hander went six innings, Keynan Middleton and Joe Kelly each had an inning, and Kendall Graveman worked the ninth inning for his fourth save.

Cardinals 8, Reds 5

CINCINNATI (AP) — Paul Goldschmidt hit a home run in his first two at-bats and St. Louis’ Adam Wainwright defeated Cincinnati for the first time since 2019.

The Cardinals have won 12 of 16 since the start of the 10-24 season.

Goldschmidt hit solo homers in the first and third innings ahead of Graham Ashcraft (2-3).

Wainwright (2-0) allowed five runs in 5 2/3 innings.

KANSAS CITY, Missouri (AP) — Maikel Garcia had three hits, an RBI and a run and Kansas City beat Detroit and slipped four games.

Mike Mayers allowed a six-hit run in 4 2/3 innings in his first start for the Royals. He managed an eight, the best of his career, and achieved one. Jose Cuas (3-0) was the winner and Aroldis Chapman made his second save for a goalless ninth.

Eduardo Rodriguez (4-4) allowed four runs — two earned — on eight hits in five innings.

Enough games now in recap for the New York Mets, there are some shakes with the depth chart. Brett Baty’s rise to the majors has already pushed aside Eduardo Escobar. What about the other players changing places?

Heading into Sunday’s action, these two players look like they’re moving up the depth chart while this other pair is moving down.

A masterful start from Joey Lucchesi on Friday has catapulted him up the depth chart. He gave the Mets 7 innings of shutout in their win over the San Francisco Giants. This feat instantly places him in the picture of the starting rotation for the foreseeable future.

It’s been a while since Lucchesi has played in the big leagues. He was away for most of the 2022 season to recover from Tommy John surgery midway through the 2021 season. This promising outing could just be the beginning of a triumphant return. Or maybe it’s just a mirage.

On the depth chart, the Mets need to start looking at him as a guy who’s capable of staying close. They’ve needed guns all season. Lucchesi’s promising debut should see him start all over again and maybe even find a slightly more permanent squad at the big league club.

It’s impossible to ignore Lucchesi as part of this year’s jigsaw puzzle. Already move it up on the depth map. While he hasn’t quite surpassed Tylor Megill, Lucchesi should be a strong consideration to get on the mound ahead of this next pitcher moving down the depth chart.

The Eagles are one team that would potentially trade down to reclaim draft picks from previous trades and want to amass a pick since they currently don’t have a fourth, fifth, or sixth round draft pick.

The Eagles have two first-round picks in this year’s draft, and they have some draft ammo to move up when targeting a specific player since they own the 30th pick for Super Bowl runners-up, along with the 10th. Pick You got them in a deal with the New Orleans Saints last March.

The Eagles are expected to have 12 picks in the 2024 draft, their own seven selections, a Day 3 pick from wide receiver Jalen Reagors Trade to the Minnesota Vikings, and four predicted compensatory picks, including a predicted third-round pick that the team expects thanks to defensive tackle Javon Hargrave, who has signed a four-year, $80 million deal with the San Francisco 49ers.

If the Eagles were to be promoted from 10th pick, it would be expensive. According to the Draftek trade value chart, using the 10th and 30th would be enough to get to the seventh pick, occupied by the Las Vegas Raiders. In 13 games last season, Anderson had 10 sacks, 12 quarterback hurries, 51 tackles, 17 tackles for loss and one interception.

A 6-foot, 4-inch, 253-pound edge rusher, Anderson is quick off the ball and has shown a few moves that have allowed him to achieve his lofty sack total. Anderson also has the athleticism to back down for cover, which the Eagles have done with their edge rushers when they apply pressure from other areas. His overall skill set could place him in multiple spots on the defensive front and, if planned properly, make Haason Reddick and Anderson’s potential devastating in pass rush situations.

Tyree Wilson, EDGE, Texas Tech

Wilson would be a good fit with the Seahawks looking for help on the defensive line, but if the Seahawks bypass Wilson, the Falcons, who are in the process of reshaping their defense, would also be a good fit, meaning the Eagles would have a deal with making the Raiders to stand in front of the Falcons and take him.

At 6 feet, 3 inches and 323 pounds on his pro day, Carter’s speed and power can provide an instant presence down the middle of the defensive line and lessen the impact of Hargrave’s departure to the San Francisco 49ers joining a rotation to do so include Fletcher Cox, Milton Williams, Marlon Tuipolutu and his former college teammate Jordan Davis.

12. März: Laut einer Quelle des Teams einigten sich die 49ers mit Gipson auf einen Einjahresvertrag über 2,9 Millionen US-Dollar. Gipson erwies sich als hervorragende Ergänzung für den Youngster Talanoa Hufanga, nachdem er Ende August nach einer Oberschenkelverletzung von Jimmie Ward unter Vertrag genommen worden war. Der 32-jährige Gipson spielte tatsächlich so gut, dass die 49ers Ward zum Nickel Cornerback versetzten, als er in die Aufstellung zurückkehrte.
