Joseph Emerson is scheduled to be arraigned on Thursday on 83 charges of recklessly endangering another person — for each person on the plane — and one charge of endangering an aircraft.

He previously pleaded not guilty to attempted murder charges filed by state prosecutors and to a federal charge of interfering with a flight crew.

Emerson’s defence lawyers welcomed the grand jury’s decision.

“The attempted murder charges were never appropriate in this case because Captain Emerson never intended to hurt another person or put anyone at risk – he just wanted to return home to his wife and children,” his defence lawyers Ethan Levi, Noah Horst and Norah Van Dusen said in a statement. “Simply put: Captain Emerson thought he was in a dream.”

Prosecutors have accused Emerson of trying to cut the engines on the October 22 flight from Everett, Washington, to San Francisco while riding in the extra seat in the cockpit.

The FBI said in an affidavit that after a brief struggle, Emerson left the cockpit and flight attendants placed him in wrist restraints and seated him in the rear of the aircraft which was diverted to Portland.

According to charging documents, Emerson told Port of Portland police he had been struggling with depression, that a friend had recently died and that he had taken psychedelic mushrooms about 48 hours before he attempted to cut the engines. He also said he had not slept in more than 40 hours.

Emerson remains in custody in Multnomah County, Oregon.

San Francisco Bar Pilots in front of their new pilot vessel, Golden Gate.

The San Francisco Bar Pilots on Thursday formally celebrated the arrival and deployment of their recently delivered Camarc 22 pilot vessel Golden Gate. Built by Snow & Company, Seattle, the Golden Gate replaces a vessel of the same name which was at the end of its lifespan. It is a state-of-the-art pilot vessel that advances the organization’s sustainability goals and whose funding was made possible through last year’s California Assembly Bill 2056 legislation authored by Assemblyman Timothy Grayson (D-Concord).

“Our vessels are a critical piece of the organization, moving the Bar Pilots through the San Francisco Bay and beyond to keep California’s economy going,” said Captain John Carlier, president of the San Francisco Bar Pilots. “The new Golden Gate’s cutting-edge engine and technology will allow us to transfer to and from ships safely and efficiently with added maneuverability and speed, meaning safer trips and faster service for the ships calling into the pilotage ground.”

The Bar Pilots play a critical role in the Bay Area economy and support more than $117 billion in economic activity throughout the region. The recent pandemic accentuated outdated funding processes, and one of the major tenets of AB 2056 was a revision of the pilot boat surcharge. The new surcharge increases flexibility and the time horizon over which pilot vessel construction is funded – a win for both the Bar Pilots and the rate payers. These updates are critical in providing the Bar Pilots with the ability to respond to an accelerated fleet replacement schedule brought about by the new California Air Resources Board (CARB) emission regulation.

“The pandemic and related supply chain issues over the last few years shined a light on the necessity to address outdated funding mechanisms and ensure that the Bar Pilots continue their essential work to push the local, regional, and state economy forward, while also reducing our carbon footprint,” said Capt. Anne McIntyre, business director of the San Francisco Bar Pilots. “We are grateful to the many partners who were instrumental in the process of bringing the new pilot vessel Golden Gate to reality.”

The San Francisco Bar Pilots were joined in their effort to proactively address pilot vessel construction funding mechanisms by the Pacific Maritime Shipping Association, Cruise Lines International Association, and Western States Petroleum Association. Through this partnership, the coalition was able to guarantee funding was available for this critical piece of the Bar Pilots daily objective: navigating ships safely in and out of the San Francisco Bay and beyond while protecting 1,000 miles of shoreline.

“The delivery of the new pilot vessel Golden Gate is an embodiment of the dedication of the maritime industry to reducing emissions at our seaports and our commitment to make new investments to support the future of California’s waterfront,” said Mike Jacob, vice president and general counsel of the Pacific Maritime Shipping Association, representing ocean carriers and ocean-going vessels calling on ports in the San Francisco Bay. “The modernized and upgraded Golden Gate will not only provide pilotage service to the vessels calling on ports, but it will meet and exceed California’s strict new emissions standards for harbor craft, which are some of the strictest in the world. This new vessel delivery was made possible by the San Francisco Bar Pilots and their vessel customers working together and going hand-in-hand together to Sacramento to get the approval of the State Legislature and Governor Newsom for the financing structure necessary to commission this vessel, and improving our environment and our local economy in the process.”

It’s 6 a.m. I drank a cup of strong black coffee, two slices of toast and a cigarette. There’s the pit-pat of feet and a knock-knock on the bathroom door. “Snookums, are you ready?” She always calls me Snookums in the pre-dawn darkness.

“I’m just finishing a chapter of War and Peace!” I reply. “It’s getting to the war part.”

You hear tapping your feet and rummaging around in the kitchen for a bucket.

These are the complications of modern life and interior installation. You sit there and think that you really need him and her. But we’re practical Iowans. I’ve heard of outhouses, chamber pots and the like. I’ve heard some of them are two-hole punches, so the bride and groom never have to be without each other.

We accepted a unisex bathroom in the office. Men and their goal are generally the problem, even when they are sober. It seems to be working despite us.

There were times, I must confess, when Casey’s men’s room was occupied for too long and I really don’t want to wade in those wakes, I used the powder room. It might be illegal. There’s probably security footage of me with my hat over my face, picking open the door with the clothing tag on it.

It’s a time-honoured state tradition to pee on gravel roads while the red-winged blackbirds scurry across the cornfields. You are free with your back to the wind. When we walked beans, boys and girls did their business at the back of the line and no one thought anything of it.

Which is why it’s hard to understand why anyone cares who pees where. Lawmakers passed a bill last week that says you need to freshen up a little in your birth-gender bathroom.

“I’m not interested in waiting for the child to be raped in a restroom by someone pretending to be transgender,” said Rep. Steven Holt, R-Denison.

Wow. It’s hard to know where to start. So back to some basics: What’s fundamentally wrong with unisex bathrooms? You have them in other places. You come out of the dressing room and a woman is washing her hands. Good morning was she a woman Was she transgender? She has clean hands, and that’s what matters.

Rural Mexican bars have a toilet with a short wall so you can watch during a break to make sure no one is cheating by the pool. It works out. Nobody gets a cheap thrill.

There is no evidence that unisex bathrooms lead to increased sexual abuse by anyone. There could be a problem in Denison with men posing as women raping children in bathrooms, but it is underreported.

What it comes down to is if you have to go, you have to go, it doesn’t matter what your perspective is. Whichever door is unlocked, select it. Put the lid back on when you’re done, gentlemen. And rinse it.

You’d think that with our bucolic appreciation for animals, we’d have a better understanding of digestion and such. She has to go, he has to go, and so does she, and neither of us should try to get in each other’s way.

Given our recent history with outbuildings and our contemporary experience with Port-A-Pots, this seems like a practical Midwest approach.

Morality must penetrate even our most basic functions. The ministers can tell you who you are, who to love, and even where to go.

The bathroom bill is silly and absurd, which is why Gov. Kim Reynolds is set to sign it.

I’d like to think it was born more out of ignorance than cruelty. I would like to think the same about a ban on gender-affirming care for transgender youth. Whatever the intention, the effect is the same: it’s cruel.

Patients of Storm Lake Dr. Sabrina Martinez say sex therapy saved her life. Martinez says she fears a ban on medical care will lead to suicides.

People take an idea dreamed up by a sexually frustrated old moral theologian and take it to the extreme. If you could step back and look at the bathroom bill and then realize how hilariously tragic it is, you can get a little more perspective.

We were raised homophobic. I learned a lot in the process. You know, you find out that your old college buddy from Twin Cities, hockey star who moved to San Francisco, turned out to be gay. He peed next to me! Or your old aunt who lived out there and rarely went back to Iowa. One of my closest friends had a son who got into serious trouble in high school. When he came out as transgender, the problems went away — she just got her master’s degree in public health and lives in New York, where she’s allowed to use the bathroom.

Rep. Megan Jones, R-Sioux Rapids, admits she still has a lot to learn. Humility is a rarity these days, especially in politics. She was among the five Republicans in the House of Representatives who voted against ignorance and overreaction. she has children She can understand how difficult it is for some people to be discriminated against without any reason, through no fault of their own.

It’s your problem if you can’t stand it when someone walks into a locker room in a soccer uniform and comes out in a prom dress. Let it be. As a result of this legislation, if someone dies who could be saved through medical care, it is everyone’s responsibility. It goes beyond the absurd into the macabre.

The San Francisco SPCA said in a press release they have partnered with United Airlines to give a forever home to a dog named Polaris after he was abandoned in the SFO. Through their partnership, Polaris found a forever home with United Captain William Dale and his family.

On December 15, United Airlines, along with the SF SPCA, hosted a party for the adoption of Polaris. According to CNN, the airline donated $5,000 to SF SPCA.

“United’s customer service team undertook quite a challenge to ensure Polaris is safe and sound and finds a loving home,” said Lisa Feder, SF SPCA Chief of Rescue and Welfare, in the press release. “We are honored that United has called the SF SPCA to facilitate this adoption based on our knowledge and experience of adoption and our nearly 155 years of experience caring for and protecting pets. We are grateful to celebrate with them today and for their $5,000 donation, which will help save lives throughout the year.”

According to the SF SPCA, Polaris arrived in SFO with a traveler from an international destination. The customer reportedly chose to travel without the dog. United worked to ensure the dog could meet the necessary requirements for entry into the United States, which included a quarantine period.

“From the moment Polaris landed in our care, our entire SFO United team provided 24/7 care for him until we received permission to keep him safely in the United States,” said Vincent Passafiume, Director of Customer Service at United press release. “It’s an amazing feeling to see this story come full circle and that Polaris will have a loving home with United Airlines Captain Dale and his family just in time for the holidays.”

Home care workers are employed by more than half a million California residents. However, many are finding it increasingly difficult to pay for these services, according to a report from the Labor Center at the University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA).

A pilot program in San Francisco County, called Support at Home, is addressing this issue by making home care available to local residents and ensuring that carers receive fair and decent wages.

The program was launched by an alliance of community groups including the Bay Area Care Council and the Long Term Care Coordinating Council. The initiative is also supported by local organizations such as the domestic employer network Hand in Hand and Senior & Disability Action, a group that advocates for seniors and people with disabilities.

A catch 22

For more than 14,000 older adults and adults with disabilities in San Francisco, paying for home care can be a “financial catch,” according to Jessica Lehman, executive director of Senior & Disability Action.

Many of these citizens make too much money to qualify for the state’s low-income health plan, Medi-Cal, but don’t have enough incomes to pay for home care services out of pocket, she said.

“As a result, thousands of San Francisco residents are paying out of pocket for home care and their companions cannot earn a living wage,” Lehman said in a press release.

Support at Home addresses both of these issues by providing vouchers to pay for home care services– –such as cooking, shopping, cleaning and bathing – for eligible residents who earn up to 100% of the regional median income, but cannot exceed it.

The pilot is managed by the San Francisco-based nonprofit Institute for Aging Research. Funding is provided by the City and County of San Francisco through the Seniors and Adult Services Division. In total, Support at Home will provide financial assistance to 175 to 250 San Francisco residents in need of home care, according to a press release.

The program has had more than 50 participants since it started in late August, Hand in Hand organizer Lindsay Imai Hong told Home Health Care News.

Now the group is working to mobilize and raise awareness of the program in hopes of creating a viable proposition for citizens in need of home care.

“We hope it will be a permanent program,” said Hong. “We have received approved funding [from the City and County of San Francisco] for two years, and so the hope is that within those two years we can begin to address the need [and] Make sure the program delivery goes smoothly. “

A worthwhile wage

Another component that the program addresses is the home care worker pay gap.

The voucher program ensures that participating caregivers are paid fairly and receive a standard wage of USD 15 per hour.

“This is a subsidy program, so home care customers or consumers must pay part of the wages,” said Hong. “In the agency model, it looks like the consumer pays the agency for a portion of the care wages, and then the Support at Home program supports a portion of the wages for that home care agency.”

Hong said the program also provides training for caregivers to understand their rights as domestic workers.

“The National Domestic Worker Coalition and the California Domestic Worker Coalition have jointly agreed with the Institute on Aging that every employee who is hired directly as a direct recruiter rather than an agency should complete a training course in which they can learn their rights as a domestic servant, ”she said. “It’s just another way of making sure they’re treated well, but also [a way for them to] know how to stand up for yourself. “

For Lourdes Dobarganes, a member of La Colectiva de Mujeres, the pilot program ensures fair justice for home care workers like her. La Colectiva de Mujeres is a group that advocates for migrant women and connects them with professional resources and jobs.

“I take pride in my work and my work enables me to meet my basic needs and those of my family,” Dobarganes said at a press conference announcing the pilot program. “The Home Assistance Program will allow care to be valued in decent working conditions, while those in need of home care receive these services and live their lives with dignity.”
