Senator JD Vance (R-Ohio, right) points to former President Donald Trump at a campaign rally on March 16 in Vandalia, Ohio. Trump named Vance as his vice presidential running mate.

Jeff Dean/Associated Press

MILWAUKEE — Before JD Vance was chosen as Donald Trump's vice president, the Ohio senator was something many Republicans despised: a Silicon Valley investor who lived in San Francisco.

Trump introduced Vance as his running mate on Monday on his social media page Truth Social, calling him “the person best qualified to serve as Vice President of the United States” and praising his “highly successful business career in technology and finance.”

Vance is not from San Francisco. He grew up in poverty in southern Ohio and Kentucky, which inspired his bestselling memoir, Hillbilly Elegy.

The article continues below this ad

After moving to San Francisco, he stopped voting for Trump. In 2016, he supported independent Evan McMullin, telling interviewer Charlie Rose, “I'm a 'never Trump' guy,” and saying Trump has “no domestic agenda other than tax cuts.”

“My fear with Trump has always been that he doesn't have great solutions. I'm pessimistic that you can flip the trade switch and bring all those steel jobs back to Middletown,” Vance said at the time, referring to the Ohio town where he grew up.

Vance lived in San Francisco after graduating from Yale Law School in 2013 and worked as a venture capitalist in the Presidio near the Golden Gate Bridge. Although he returned to his native Ohio in 2017, his Democratic opponents mocked his stay in San Francisco, calling it a sign of how out of touch he was with the heart of the nation.

When Vance ran for Senate in Ohio in 2022, his Democratic opponent, then-Representative Tim Ryan, believed Vance's stay in San Francisco was political gold with working-class voters.

Ryan's supporters derided Vance as a “San Francisco vulture capitalist” and sent him a “sustainable and vegan soy candle with a unique San Francisco scent.” The Ohio Democratic Party chairman derided him as “a San Francisco elitist who will do or say anything to climb the political ladder.”

The article continues below this ad

Vance, meanwhile, railed against Ryan for voting in lockstep with Speaker Emerita Nancy Pelosi. Ryan responded during a debate that Vance mentioned Pelosi so often that “if you want to run against Nancy Pelosi, move back to San Francisco and run against Nancy Pelosi.”

Ryan's campaign team mocked Vance for an essay in which he wrote: “My wife and I spent the morning volunteering at a community garden in our San Francisco neighborhood. After a few hours of odd jobs, we headed off with the other volunteers to our respective destinations: delicious brunches, day trips to wine country, tours of art galleries. By San Francisco standards, it was a perfectly normal day.”

What was not mentioned was that the Atlantic essay Ryan was referring to was about opioid addiction in Ohio and that Vance talked about his mother's drug addiction.

In San Francisco, Vance worked for Peter Thiel's Mithril Capital Management. Thiel, a billionaire investor who was a major Republican donor and an early supporter of Trump during his 2016 campaign, has since distanced himself from Trump and said he will not make any political donations this year. Thiel, who is gay, is frustrated by the Republican Party's focus on cultural issues, particularly when it comes to transgender rights.

After the publication of “Hillbilly Elegy” in 2016, Vance became a mainstream media darling as a cultural commentator for the rural, white, working-class Americans portrayed in his memoir. “CBS This Morning” asked him to explain the 2017 white supremacist rally in Charlottesville, Virginia, which Trump famously said had “good people on both sides.”

The article continues below this ad

“I think the president has really missed an opportunity,” Vance said, “to name this enemy, to describe it and then tell the country what we need to do to defeat it.” Vance said a president should not only be a political leader, “but also a moral leader.”

Vance changed his mind about Trump after returning to Ohio and worked hard to eventually get his support for his Senate campaign. During a campaign appearance to promote Vance in 2016, Trump mocked him while drumming up support: “JD kisses my ass,” Trump told the crowd.

Jessica Millan Patterson, chairwoman of the California Republican Party, was not concerned about Vance's lack of experience. Much like former President Barack Obama, Vance served only two years in the Senate before running for president. (Obama served three terms in the Illinois legislature before running as the Democratic Party candidate in 2008. Vance had never held elected office before his current role.)

“I mean, President Trump never held elected office before his election,” Patterson said Monday.

Patterson and other California delegates downplayed Vance's San Francisco background.

The article continues below this ad

“It just shows that he could represent the whole country,” said John Dennis, chairman of the San Francisco Republican Party. “He lived in San Francisco. He represents Ohio. He's a great cross-section.”

Dennis, chairman of the Republican Liberty Caucus, a national organization that represents libertarian values, said Vance is one of the organization's highest-ranking senators primarily because of his advocacy of smaller government and less military intervention abroad.

Vance has since used his connections in Silicon Valley and San Francisco to help Trump.

In March, Vance introduced Trump to San Francisco venture capitalist David Sacks, who co-hosts the country's second-best technology podcast, “All-In,” with wealthy investor Chamath Palihapitiya. Vance was also instrumental in organizing a fundraiser at Sacks' Pacific Heights mansion, which Trump and Vance attended. Tickets cost $50,000 to $500,000 and netted the former president $12 million.

On Sunday, Vance blamed President Joe Biden – without any evidence – for the failed assassination attempt on Trump. Authorities have so far found no motive for the shooter's actions.

The article continues below this ad

“The central premise of the Biden campaign is that President Donald Trump is an authoritarian fascist who must be stopped at all costs,” Vance wrote on the social media platform X on Sunday. “This rhetoric led directly to the assassination of President Trump.”

By this argument, Vance would also be complicit. In 2022, his former college roommate, Georgia State Rep. Josh McLaurin, posted a social media message he received from Vance in 2016 comparing Trump to Adolf Hitler.

“I'm torn between thinking that Trump could be a cynical Nixon-like asshole who wouldn't be so bad (and might even prove useful) and thinking that he could be America's Hitler,” Vance wrote, according to McLaurin. “That's not discouraging.”

East Bay Democratic Rep. Eric Swalwell responded to Vance on X on Sunday, saying, “You called Trump 'American Hitler' – now you're back at your kids' table. Violence will NEVER be the answer.”

Senate candidate Adam Schiff (D-Burbank) echoed Vance's previous comments following the announcement.

“Trump has torn down so many of the guardrails of our democracy because he could stand in for him in Congress,” wrote Democratic Rep. Adam Schiff of Burbank on X. Vance “is now at the top of the list. Having declared Trump unfit for office, he is now stepping onto the ballot ready to advance everything he once disapproved of in the pure pursuit of power.”

When asked about Vance's past comments about Trump, former Republican presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy did not respond directly on Monday at a policy forum sponsored by the conservative think tank Heritage Foundation.

“I think there's a lot of understandable anger,” Ramaswamy said. “So the question is: Are you telling people not to be angry? No, of course not. I share that anger. But how can we channel that frustration, sadness and anger that comes with it to actually do what we might not have been able to do otherwise?”

Delegates at the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee on Monday also had no problem with Vance's previous comments about Trump.

“Apparently they've worked it out. And if they can work it out between themselves and come to an agreement, it's up to our country to unite and support both of them to the best of our ability,” said Phillip Cothman, a delegate from Fontana.

Cothman, 33, was more excited that Vance represented a younger generation.

“As you can see if you look around the room, we need a lot more youth and vigor, and I hope this inspires others our age to step up to the plate,” Cothman said. “This is no longer my parents' party. This is a party for me, my family and my children.”

Sacks, the billionaire who hosted a fundraiser for Trump at his Pacific Heights home last month, called Vance on X “an American patriot who has the courage to fight America's wars but also the wisdom to know when to avoid them.” Elon Musk, the owner of the social media platform who endorsed Trump over the weekend, responded: “Great choice.”

Payroll errors in 2022 caused the NFL to deprive the San Francisco 49ers of a 2025 fifth-round draft pick and forfeit a better position in the fourth round of the 2024 draft due to an accounting error that occurred impacted salary cap projections.

“This action resulted from a league review that identified errors in payroll processing at the end of the 2022 league year that resulted in a misstatement of the club’s cumulative player compensation. “The NFL concluded that regardless of the error, the club would have remained under the salary cap at all times and there was no intent to circumvent the cap,” the league said in a statement.

Statement from the NFL regarding the #49ers forfeiting their original 5th round pick in the 2025 NFL Draft and moving their 4th round pick this year to the bottom of the round behind the compensatory pick (No. 135):

“This action resulted from a review by the league which determined that….”

— Nick Wagoner (@nwagoner) March 18, 2024

The NFL also moved the San Francisco 49ers' fourth-round draft pick, No. 131, to the bottom of the round, behind the compensatory picks, at No. 135.

“We accept responsibility and accept the disciplinary action imposed by the NFL due to a payroll clerical error. At no time did we mislead or otherwise deceive the league or gain any competitive advantage in connection with the payroll error,” the 49ers said in a statement Monday.

The Democrats’ delicate majority in the U.S. Senate puts extra pressure on California Gov. Gavin Newsom to quickly pick a replacement for Sen. Dianne Feinstein after her death.

Already, names were being floated Friday in California circles. The situation is complicated and wrought with political risk for Newsom, a term-limited governor with national political ambitions of his own.

The Democratic governor has promised to appoint a Black woman. He has also promised to avoid the field of candidates already running for Feinstein’s seat, which was set to expire at the end of next year and includes Rep. Barbara Lee, one of the state’s most prominent Black women currently serving in elected office.

In filling the Senate vacancy, Newsom has the sole authority to name a successor. He could even pick himself, though that is unlikely.

Newsom made no mention of Feinstein’s replacement in a statement he issued marking her death Friday morning.

“Dianne Feinstein was many things – a powerful, trailblazing U.S. Senator; an early voice for gun control; a leader in times of tragedy and chaos. But to me, she was a dear friend, a lifelong mentor, and a role model not only for me, but to my wife and daughters for what a powerful, effective leader looks like,” Newsom said. “There is simply nobody who possessed the strength, gravitas, and fierceness of Dianne Feinstein.”

FILE – Sen. Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif., smiles after announcing the introduction of a Senate bill to repeal the Defense of Marriage Act, on Capitol Hill, March 16, 2011.

(AP Photo/Cliff Owen, File)

On Capitol Hill, Feinstein’s death leaves Senate Democrats with no margin for error until a successor is appointed.

Democrats now have a functional majority of just 50 seats in the Senate, while Republicans hold 49. At the same time, many Democrats are calling for the resignation of the indicted Sen. Robert Menendez, D-N.J., although the embattled Democrat has vowed not to step down.

And while Democrats continue to control Congress’ upper chamber, Feinstein’s absence will make it harder to advance Biden’s judge nominees in the Judiciary Committee.

Newsom’s choices all run political risks.

Should he follow through on his pledge to avoid picking from those already running in the Senate primary, he could select a true caretaker who would be replaced by whomever voters select in next year’s election.

A handful of Black women in office have been floated as possibilities, including Secretary of State Shirley Weber and Los Angeles County Supervisor Holly Mitchell.

Lee and others lashed out at Newsom earlier in the month after he indicated he would select a caretaker instead of picking from the current slate of candidates.

“The idea that a Black woman should be appointed only as a caretaker to simply check a box is insulting to countless Black women across this country who have carried the Democratic Party to victory election after election,” Lee tweeted.

Some California Democrats are still upset about Newsom’s last Senate appointment.

He chose Alex Padilla, then California’s secretary of state, to replace Kamala Harris in the Senate when she was elected vice president. That process took more than six weeks. That made Padilla California’s first Latino senator, but it also left the Senate without a Black woman.

He later promised that if Feinstein’s seat became vacant, he would choose a Black woman to replace her.

“He made the commitment and I do not believe there is any wiggle room for the governor not to honor his commitment,” Kerman Maddox, a Los Angeles-based Democratic strategist and fundraiser, said before Feinstein’s death.

In a recent interview with Fox 11 TV in Los Angeles, Newsom said he was being swamped with recommendations for how to fill a possible Senate vacancy.

The decision for Newsom is clouded by his personal relationship with the late senator.

Newsom, whose father was a prominent judge in San Francisco, has known Feinstein since he was a child and has spoken recently about their personal connection. He interned in her office in college and said he considers her to be family. He said it wasn’t long ago that she would call him on the phone to discuss a variety of issues, from water policy to forest management.

“I have no objectivity whatsoever,” he said in a recent interview with NBC when asked about Feinstein and her decision to stay in the Senate.

He said he was hoping he would never have to make a decision to fill her seat.

The Arizona Diamondbacks beat up once again on one of their main competitors for a playoff spot, blasting the San Francisco Giants, 8-4, on Tuesday night at Chase Field for their fourth consecutive win.

After falling behind, 2-0, after a half inning, the Diamondbacks scored eight times in the next five innings, including four runs in the second inning when they took the lead for good.

Ketel Marte had four hits and a walk; Corbin Carroll delivered a pair of important hits in the first two innings; and the Diamondbacks’ bullpen had yet another dominant night, picking up the slack after a lackluster start from Zac Gallen.

In improving to 80-72, the Diamondbacks managed keep pace with the Chicago Cubs (79-72) and Miami Marlins (79-73), both of whom also won, while gaining a game on the Cincinnati Reds (79-74), who lost. The Diamondbacks are a half-game up on the Cubs for the second wild-card spot and a full game ahead of the Marlins, who are on the outside looking in at the playoff picture.

Gallen gave up four runs in five innings, laboring through a 36-pitch fifth. Four Diamondbacks relievers each tossed hitless, scoreless innings, including the club’s top leverage relievers, Kevin Ginkel and closer Paul Sewald, who worked the eighth and ninth innings, respectively.

All four wins on the Diamondbacks’ current streak came against contenders. They play one more against the Giants before departing for a six-game road trip to face the New York Yankees and Chicago White Sox.

—Nick Piecoro

NL Wild Card standings, odds, schedule:DBacks, Cubs, Reds, Marlins, Giants in close race

Gallen struggles again but Diamondbacks still lead

Thanks to an explosive offensive day, the Diamondbacks still lead the Giants, 8-4, after five innings. They did not, though, get an encouraging performance from Zac Gallen.

Gallen’s day ended after he allowed two runs in the fifth inning. The frame could have been even worse, but Mike Yastrzemski narrowly missed a three-run home run foul down the right-field line that would have cut the Diamondbacks’ lead to 7-6. Gallen proceeded to walk Yastrzemski and the next batter, Wilmer Flores, to bring a run home before stranding the bases loaded with a strikeout of Joc Pederson.

Although Gallen did strike out six batters, he ended his day with four earned runs on six hits and three walks over five innings. In four of his last five starts, he has now allowed 21 runs over 20 2/3 innings. The outlier outing in that stretch was a nine-inning complete game shutout of the Cubs.

After Gallen’s day ended in the top of the fifth with the Diamondbacks leading, 7-4, they got an insurance run in the bottom half thanks to an Alek Thomas triple and a Gabriel Moreno sacrifice fly. Miguel Castro entered for Gallen to start the sixth.

—Theo Mackie

Giants starting pitcher Alex Cobb departs with injury

With the Diamondbacks already leading, 5-2, the Giants lost their starting pitcher in the bottom of the third inning on Tuesday night as right-hander Alex Cobb walked off the mound with a trainer.

The specific injury is not yet known, but Cobb had been dealing with a left hip impingement in recent weeks and recently avoided a stint on the injured list by receiving a cortisone injection.

Cobb was not sharp through two innings, but he also was not aided by his defense, which melted down during the Diamondbacks’ four-run second inning.

Cobb was replaced by Giants left-hander Alex Wood.

—Nick Piecoro

Diamondbacks take lead over Giants with wild inning

The first inning Tuesday night could hardly have gone worse for the Diamondbacks. But thanks to a second inning that epitomized their brand of baseball, they lead the Giants, 5-2.

Leading off the game, Zac Gallen gave up a triple to LaMonte Wade Jr. that squirted past Corbin Carroll in right field. Wade came around to score on a sacrifice fly before Joc Pederson took Gallen deep on a curveball below the zone that did not appear to be a particularly bad pitch. The early struggles came as Gallen has allowed five or more runs in three of his last four starts.

In each of those three, the Diamondbacks lost. Tuesday could be different because of how their offense fought back.

Carroll and Ketel Marte led off the first with consecutive singles and Carroll came in to score on a Tommy Pham force out. Carroll was again at the center of everything in the second, hitting a two RBI double down the left field line. Ketel Marte then walked, putting runners on first and second. They executed a double steal when catcher Patrick Bailey’s throw bounced away from Wilmer Flores at third base. Carroll took home on the play and Flores sailed his throw to the plate, enabling Marte to score all the way from first.

—Theo Mackie

White Sox to hire DBacks’ Josh Barfield for high-ranking role

Arizona Diamondbacks farm director Josh Barfield has accepted a position as an assistant general manager with the Chicago White Sox, a source confirmed Tuesday afternoon.

Barfield has been with the Diamondbacks since 2015, moving from scouting to player development. He became the top assistant in player development in 2018, then took over the top job two years later.

Barfield will work under new White Sox General Manager Chris Getz.

Barfield’s departure was first reported by MLB.com.

The Diamondbacks do not yet have plans in place to replace Barfield.

—Nick Piecoro

Diamondbacks’ first round pick Tommy Troy undergoes procedure on foot

Shortstop Tommy Troy, the Diamondbacks’ first-round pick in this year’s draft and one of their top prospects, was wearing a boot on his left foot Tuesday when he met with reporters in the dugout at Chase Field.

Troy said he fractured the foot on a hit by pitch in March and made the injury a few weeks later when he rolled over the same foot. After playing on it all season, Troy got an operation last week. He is set to get his stitches removed in two weeks and expects to be back shortly after that to go through a full off-season of training.

“It was definitely bugging me a bit but still grinded through it, found ways to deal with it and find a way to win,” Troy said. “That’s what you gotta do.”

Playing through the injury at Stanford, Troy hit .394/.478/.699. After being selected No. 12 overall, he hit .271/.374/.469 in 27 games between the Arizona Complex League and High-A.

“It was everything I thought it was gonna be,” Troy said of his first taste of professional baseball. “It was just super fun. This is your job, this is what I get to do for a living. Everything I ever wanted.”

—Theo Mackie

Tuesday’s Diamondbacks-Giants pitching matchup

Diamondbacks RHP Zac Gallen (15-8, 3.50) vs. Giants RHP Alex Cobb (7-6, 3.62).

Gallen was hit hard by the Mets in his most recent start, giving up seven runs (six earned) in five-plus innings in an outing at Citi Field last week. … Prior to that, he turned in perhaps the best start of his career, a three-hit shutout of the Cubs at Wrigley Field. … He has pitched pretty well against the Giants both times he has faced them, giving up a combined five runs in 13 2/3 innings. … Cobb gave up a pair of unearned runs in five innings against Cleveland in his most recent start. … He has faced the Diamondbacks twice this year, allowing three runs in 13 1/3 innings with three walks and seven strikeouts. … His curveball has been his best put-away pitch. He has induced whiffs on 31.4 percent of swings.

Coming up

Wednesday: At Chase Field, 12:40 p.m., Diamondbacks RHP Merrill Kelly (11-7, 3.45) vs. Giants RHP Logan Webb (10-12, 3.31.

Thursday: Off.

Friday: At New York, 4:05 p.m., Diamondbacks RHP Brandon Pfaadt (2-8, 5.86) vs. Yankees LHP Carlos Rodon (3-6, 5.90).

Saturday: At New York, 10:05 a.m., Diamondbacks RHP Zach Davies (2-5, 6.81) vs. Yankees TBA.

More DBacks:For Diamondbacks and Torey Lovullo, no room for error with starting rotation

What to know about the San Francisco Giants

Like the rest of the teams in the mix for the final wild-card spots, the Giants seem to alternate between looking like a viable contender and looking as if they have no business in the race. They looked like the latter over the weekend when they dropped three out of four to the Colorado Rockies at Coors Field, winning on Sunday to avoid a sweep — and only barely as they almost blew an 11-5 lead. They are 6-5 against the Diamondbacks this season. If they win one of these two games they will earn the tiebreaker against them. (The Diamondbacks already have lost the tiebreaker to Cincinnati and Miami, though they have it over the Cubs.) OF Mitch Haniger had a good day at the plate on Sunday, though he has not had good results since returning from injury in late August. Similarly, OF Michael Conforto came off the injured list last week and had a quiet series vs. the Rockies. Both teams are starting their top two starters in this series. Both teams also were off on Monday.

            CHRISTINE MAXA

When it comes to flower worship, the Penstemon clan tops the list with orchids and roses. With 272 to 300 species (depending on the source), the genus is the largest in the US, with the species being found in every state. About 90 percent occur in the western states. Utah leads the way with 76 species and Arizona has about 50.

Botanists specialize in them, arboretums hold festivals in their honor and there is even a club of their own. The American Penstemon Society can tell you everything you wanted to know about penstemons, including all kinds of information that self-proclaimed penstemanics might find interesting.

A member of the plantain family (Plantagaceae), the penstemon probably first showed its flower face on planet Earth in the Rocky Mountains. Most Penstemons come in shades of blue and purple; a few dozen blush reds and a handful reveal glamorous shades of pink, or a standout shade of white, yellow, or burgundy. The latter carries a Flagstaff breakaway, Whipples Penstemon.

People also read…

Penstemons prefer disturbed areas as they need light and good drainage to germinate their seeds. Colonies often appear along sun-kissed roads and roadsides. However, Whipple’s Penstemon tolerates shade and grows in mixed coniferous forests.

Penstemons, like any other flower, are designed to please their pollinators. Their flowers have two upper and three lower petals of just the right colour, size and position to suit their pollinators’ preferences.

For example, the few red numbers have narrow tubes tailored for hummingbirds, which are strongly attracted to the color red. and their lower petals generally retract to ensure pollinators that cannot levitate never sip their cup. The puffy pale pink Palmer penstemon, on the other hand, harbors bumblebees with landing pad-like lower petals.

Is that a Pentstemon or Penstemon?

If you take a look inside a penstemon, you can understand how the flower got its name by referring to the occasionally used Greek spelling “pentstemon”. The Greek name refers to the five (pénte) stamens (stem or filament) of the penstemon.

But wait – one of the stamens has no pollen. So there are actually only four stamens and one that looks like a stamen. The nerd is technically called a staminode. This sterile stamen usually carries a row of hairs, earning the family the nickname “beard tongue”. The correct spelling of the name “penstemon” combines Latin and Greek: Latin “paene” or “almost” and Greek “stemon”, which describes the staminode almost as a stamen.

Since nature has the ability to eliminate everything superfluous, especially if it does not contribute to the survival of the species, the question arises as to how this sterile stamen was able to prevail. The short answer is that it gets in the way of a quick pollination experience.

The placement of the staminodium in the penstemon causes the pollinator to spend more time getting to the nectar while navigating the obstacle. With the staminode strategically placed, the pollinator has more contact with the stigma to lay down more pollen, as well as with the anthers, meaning it leaves with more pollen.

The hairs on the staminodium not only give the pollinator support, but also prevent valuable pollen from falling out of the flower. And some staminodes actually position floating pollinators for maximum anther contact. In other words, the staminode directs pollinator traffic.

The staminodes of each species have specific characteristics to increase the chances of pollination in each visitor. The shoulder-high Palmer penstemon is an easy target for a variety of bees. The staminodium has a covering of bright yellow hairs – bees are attracted to the colors purple, blue and yellow – and lays like a welcome mat right where bees enter the flower. As a further incentive, unlike the rest of the daisy family, the flower gives off a scent that is attractive to bees.

Nicknamed for its striking color, the scarlet hornbill (P. barbatus) is commonly found in pinyon, ponderosa, and spruce forests. The slender and downward-sloping flowers are shaped to fit little more than a hummingbird’s beak. The hairless staminodes, placed to urge the pollinator at the most favorable angle for pollination, allows pollen to fall directly onto the soaring hummingbirds.

Whipple’s penstemon (P. whippleanus), which grows in the upper reaches of the San Francisco Peaks and Kendrick Mountain, has hair almost everywhere except on its staminodium. In general, the hairs protect the plant from cold snaps.

Instead of a bearded tongue, tufts of hair line the lip of each flower, serving as a collection point for pollen dropped by visiting pollinators. The penstemon’s hairy stems prevent insects from approaching the typically burgundy flowers that cluster at the top. Most penstemons have flowers that sprout along the plant’s stem in what are known as elongated clusters.

If finding these penstemons doesn’t give you the slightest bit of penstemonism, then the Sunset Crater penstemon (P. clutei) certainly will. This pretty pink penstemon only grows in San Francisco Volcanic Field, specifically Sunset Crater. The Penstemon has bee-magnetic yellow hairs on the staminode and distinctive pink nectar lines that guide pollinators to its nectar. If you find a Sunset Crater Penstemon, you can call yourself a real Pensteman, if only by default, as there are said to be only a few dozen of these Penstemons.

Nick Zakelj spent five years at Fordham becoming one of the best offensive tackles in the Patriot Conference. That path isn’t likely to continue in the NFL after the 49ers picked him 187th overall in this year’s draft. Zakelj told reporters in a press conference after he was selected that he anticipates a move inside as a pro.

“While I did play tackle in college and I’m most comfortable at it, getting those reps at guard at the Senior Bowl broadened my horizon,” he said via Cam Inman of the Bay Area News Group. “I’m open to being more of a guard at the next level.”

This has become a habit for the 49ers in the draft. Colton McKivitz in 2020 and Jaylon Moore in 2021 were both 49ers picks that played tackle in college, but were taken with the goal of moving them to the interior. This year’s fourth-round pick Spencer Burford also primarily played tackle in college and figures to kick inside as a pro.

Perhaps Zakelj acquits himself well on the outside and sticks at his natural position, but the 49ers need help inside. There are two starting guard jobs open and if Zakelj can make that move with his size and athleticism it’s easy to see how he’d successfully work his way into the new position.

The offer was on the table.

The 49ers declined.

According to Ian Rapport of NFL Network, the Jets presented San Francisco with a trade package including the No. 10 overall pick of the 2022 NFL draft for wide receiver Deebo Samuel.

New York’s offer also included a pick swap later on in this year’s draft, per Rapoport.

Samuel ended up staying put on Thursday night. It was Titans receiver AJ Brown, out of nowhere, that ended up changing teams. Tennessee dealt their star wideout to the Eagles in the midst of a wild first round, in exchange for the No. 18 pick and a third rounder.

Incidentally that third-round pick, no. 101 overall, ended up with the Jets. New York acquired the No. 26 and no. 101 picks from the Titans in a separate deal later on as the Jets sent three selections to Tennessee. New York used that five-pick deal to grab Florida State EDGE Jermaine Johnsonwho was slipping deeper and deeper in the first round.

Even after Samuel requested a trade from the 49ers, reports from across the league made it seem like San Francisco was in no hurry to let him go. That doesn’t mean the Jets, and other teams, weren’t interested and actively looking to strike a deal for the playmaker.

READ: Three Trade Proposals For Jets to Acquire San Francisco 49ers WR Deebo Samuel

Once the dust settled on the first round, Jets general manager Joe Douglas revealed that Samuel wasn’t an option when New York was on the clock.

“I’m not going to get into discussions,” Douglas told reporters. “I’ll say this. When we were on the clock at 10, we didn’t field any calls.”

Moving on from Samuel, and after months of trying to add an elite wideout to their receiver room, New York took Ohio State wide receiver Garrett Wilson 10th overall. Wilson isn’t a proven commodity like Samuel, Brown or Tyreek Hill, but he flashed his potential in a Buckeyes uniform. Plus, he’s younger and cheaper than those other options, giving New York a real chance to build a strong aerial attack on offense that may stay intact for years to come.

The news of Jaren Holmes’ departure from the St. Bonaventure men’s basketball team came late Friday night, and a day later, the guard confirmed he will enter the transfer portal after three seasons with the Bonnies.

The program didn’t waste time finding a replacement, though. Guard Daryl Banks III announced Sunday he will transfer to Bona after three seasons at Saint Peter’s. And Monday, Marcus Hammond ended more than a month of speculation as to his next destination, when the former Niagara guard announced he would join Notre Dame as a graduate transfer.

The moves were part of a busy stretch for transfers to leave or join Big 4 men’s and women’s basketball programs, and expect a flurry of last-minute movement this week because the deadline for athletes in fall and winter sports to enter the transfer portal without having to sit out a season, unless they are granted a waiver that provides immediate eligibility, is Sunday.

In all, at least 20 players from Big 4 men’s teams and at least 10 players from Big 4 women’s teams have entered the portal as of 8 pm Monday, either confirming their transfer or having it reported by various outlets. Additionally, at least 13 men and two women from Big 4 programs have yet to announce their next destinations.

According to Stadium, more than 1,250 men’s basketball players who were on scholarship this past season are in the transfer portal.

The NCAA on Monday released a dashboard that displays Division I transfer portal data for the 2019-20 and 2020-21 academic years. Of the 1,692 men’s basketball players who entered the portal in 2020-21, 63% transferred to NCAA schools.

According to The Athletic, as of April 12, 1,143 women’s basketball players were in the transfer portal following the 2021-22 season.

According to NCAA data, of the 1,134 women’s basketball players who entered the portal in 2020-21, 63% transferred to NCAA schools.

Here’s a look at some of the recent movement – and moves that could come soon – among Big 4 men’s and women’s basketball players who have entered the transfer portal or have joined Big 4 schools.

New UB women’s coach Becky Burke continues to fill a roster that was depleted by transfers out of the school with incoming players, including Kiara Johnson, a 6-foot-2 forward from Tonawanda who is a Cardinal O’Hara graduate. UB announced Johnson’s transfer Monday.

She was a second-team All-Western New York selection in 2018, played for two seasons at Eastern Michigan and for one season at Towson, but did not play last season. Johnson averaged 4.0 points and 4.4 rebounds in 76 games in three seasons with Eastern Michigan and Towson.

Dyaisha Fair entered the transfer portal March 28, but has not yet announced her transfer destination. Fair, a guard who was fourth in the nation in scoring last season (23.4 points per game), recently posted on her social media accounts that she has visited Baylor and South Carolina, the defending national champion.

Three women’s players — guard Georgia Woolley, forward Saniaa Wilson and guard Cheyenne McEvans — have followed former UB coach Felicia Legette-Jack to Syracuse.

On the men’s side, Tra’Von Fagan, a forward who played for UB for the last four seasons, will transfer to UMBC, according to CBSSports.com.

Canisius is dipping into the portal and the junior-college ranks to replenish its lineup, after five players from the 2021-22 roster entered the transfer portal.

The Griffs added Tre Dinkins on Sunday. The 6-foot-2 guard, averaged 15.1 points, 3.2 rebounds and 2.7 assists in 34 games this season for Harcum College in Bryn Mawr, Pa. He joins Jamir Moultrie, a 6-1 guard from Kennesaw State, and Sarion McGee, a 6-8 forward who has played at Grambling and Logan CC in Carterville, Ill.

Of the five who entered the portal, two will head to new programs: Malek Green will enroll at Youngstown State, and, according to multiple reports, Armon Harried will transfer to Binghamton.

Hammond is among five Purple Eagles who have entered the portal, and is the second to announce his transfer choice. Guard Raheem Solomon has announced his transfer to Sacred Heart.

Niagara has added Keith Kiner, a 6-6 junior college forward from Three Rivers Junior College in Missouri.

Banks’ transfer to Bona came two days after Moses Flowers, a guard from Hartford, announced he would join the Bonnies as a transfer.

Banks averaged 11.3 points and 2.6 rebounds in 34 games at Saint Peter’s this season, but drew plenty of attention in the NCAA Tournament. In the Peacocks’ 85-79 first-round upset of Kentucky, the 6-foot-3 guard scored 27 points. He averaged 13.5 points in four tournament games.

Quadry Adams confirmed Monday he has entered the portal. Stadium.com reported that Abdoul-Karim Coulibaly, who played one season for the Bonnies, will transfer to UMass-Lowell.

SANTA CLARA (AP) — The San Francisco 49ers have helped dictate the first round of the draft in five years under general manager John Lynch and coach Kyle Shanahan with top 10 picks four times and multiple first-rounders twice.

That’s what will make this year’s opening night of the draft so unusual for the Niners, who won’t have an opening-round pick for the first time since 1996 after trading it last March to move up to take Trey Lance third overall to be their quarterback of the future.

READ MORE: Wanted San Francisco Fugitive Captured In Atlanta Gang Raid

San Francisco’s first pick next week will be 61st overall in the second round, barring a trade.

“Everyone talks, ‘We don’t have a first-round pick,’ and we’re not used to that,” general manager John Lynch said earlier this offseason. “But I think when people ask me what’s the signature of this draft, it’s the depth of it. So it’s a good year to have it. I like that we have nine picks. I think it’s a good year to exhibit patience … It sets up well for where we’re at.”

The verdict on the decision to trade three first-round picks for Lance hasn’t been rendered yet as he started only two games as a rookie when San Francisco went to the NFC title game with Jimmy Garoppolo as the starting quarterback.

Garoppolo is still around: San Francisco was unable to trade him this offseason after he underwent shoulder surgery. Garoppolo is expected to be with the Niners for the start of the offseason program but he still could be traded either at the draft or later in the offseason as Shanahan remains committed to Lance as the future starter.

“We brought Trey here to be that eventually, and I think that will be sooner than later,” Shanahan said.

DEEBO’S FUTURE

All-Pro receiver Deebo Samuel told ESPN he has requested a trade, which could alter the draft plans for San Francisco. The Niners could give into the demand and deal Samuel for a pick that could get them a replacement in the first round. If they don’t make a deal, the 49ers could look to add a receiver later in the draft for depth in case they end up moving on from Samuel later this offseason or when his contract is up at the end of the season.

BIGGEST NEED

San Francisco was fairly quiet in free agency, with the most significant move the signing of former Chiefs cornerback Charvarius Ward. Most of the other moves focused on adding depth to the defensive line and upgrading special teams.

READ MORE: Giants Pitcher Anthony DeSclafani On 10-Day Injured List; Outfielder Steven Duggar On 60-Day IL

That leaves the biggest need heading into the draft at guard, where starter Laken Tomlinson left in free agency, leaving 2021 second-rounder Aaron Banks and Daniel Brunskill as the leading contenders to start. But Banks was unable to get on the field much as a rookie, and Brunskill was overmatched at times and could be better suited to a reserve role in which he could play both tackle and guard.

OTHER NEEDS

The Niners also could use help at safety with long-time starter Jaquiski Tartt still unsigned as a free agent, along with center and right tackle.

The Niners are unsure 36-year-old center Alex Mack will return for another season, but no matter what he decides the team still could look for a long-term option there. Mike McGlinchey, the No. 9 overall pick in 2018, is playing out his fifth-year option at right tackle and coming off a season-ending quadriceps injury. So adding depth there could be an option.

STRENGTH IN NUMBERS

Despite the missing picks from the Lance trade, the 49ers are expected to be busy on the second and third days of the draft. San Francisco got five compensatory picks for losing free agents, along with special picks for losing Robert Saleh to coach the Jets and Martin Mayhew to take over as GM in Washington.

One of those picks went to Miami in the Lance deal, but San Francisco will still have a second-round pick, two thirds, one fourth, one fifth, three sixths and one seventh.

LONG WAIT

This would be the first time since 1996 that the Niners won’t make a pick in the first round after using that pick the previous year to trade up for receiver JJ Stokes. San Francisco’s first pick that draft didn’t make much of an impact with second-round defensive end Israel Ifeanyi playing just three career games. But the 49ers did come away with a star that year, taking Hall of Fame receiver Terrell Owens in the third round.

Former Auburn standout Dee Ford will be looking for a new NFL opportunity. San Francisco 49ers general manager John Lynch told reporters this week that the team is moving on from Ford, who has missed significant time due to injury.

“I don’t see a lot of hope with him being a factor for us on the field moving forward,” Lynch said of Ford at the NFL Annual Meeting, per NBC Sports Bay Area. “I think we tried to be as patient as possible, and no fault of Dee, he just ran into a bad situation with his back, where he couldn’t get healthy.”

A 2013 All-SEC selection, Ford went to the Kansas City Chiefs with the No. 23 overall pick in the 2014 NFL Draft. He played for the Chiefs through the 2018 season. On March 2, 2019, Kansas City placed the franchise tag on Ford. Less than 2 weeks later, the Chiefs traded Ford to San Francisco. Ford and the Niners then agreed to a 5-year deal worth $87.5 million.

Ford played in 21 games for the 49ers. Over the last 2 seasons, though, he appeared in just 7 games. Ford was placed on injured reserve in 2020 with a neck and back injury, playing in just 1 game. This past season, Ford played in 6 games, landing on IR again in November.

San Francisco has not yet officially parted with Ford.

“We’ll figure that out, exactly what the transaction will be,” Lynch told reporters. “But not enough hope and progress to see him playing for us moving forward.”

Over his professional career, Ford has played in 85 regular-season games, including 43 starts. In the regular season, he has tallied 159 tackles, 40 sacks, 12 forced fumbles and 7 passes defended. He has also played in 8 postseason games (4 starts), logging 17 tackles and 2.5 sacks. In 2018, Ford was selected to the Pro Bowl and led the NFL in forced fumbles with 7.
