SANTA CLARA (AP) — The San Francisco 49ers have helped dictate the first round of the draft in five years under general manager John Lynch and coach Kyle Shanahan with top 10 picks four times and multiple first-rounders twice.

That’s what will make this year’s opening night of the draft so unusual for the Niners, who won’t have an opening-round pick for the first time since 1996 after trading it last March to move up to take Trey Lance third overall to be their quarterback of the future.

READ MORE: Wanted San Francisco Fugitive Captured In Atlanta Gang Raid

San Francisco’s first pick next week will be 61st overall in the second round, barring a trade.

“Everyone talks, ‘We don’t have a first-round pick,’ and we’re not used to that,” general manager John Lynch said earlier this offseason. “But I think when people ask me what’s the signature of this draft, it’s the depth of it. So it’s a good year to have it. I like that we have nine picks. I think it’s a good year to exhibit patience … It sets up well for where we’re at.”

The verdict on the decision to trade three first-round picks for Lance hasn’t been rendered yet as he started only two games as a rookie when San Francisco went to the NFC title game with Jimmy Garoppolo as the starting quarterback.

Garoppolo is still around: San Francisco was unable to trade him this offseason after he underwent shoulder surgery. Garoppolo is expected to be with the Niners for the start of the offseason program but he still could be traded either at the draft or later in the offseason as Shanahan remains committed to Lance as the future starter.

“We brought Trey here to be that eventually, and I think that will be sooner than later,” Shanahan said.

DEEBO’S FUTURE

All-Pro receiver Deebo Samuel told ESPN he has requested a trade, which could alter the draft plans for San Francisco. The Niners could give into the demand and deal Samuel for a pick that could get them a replacement in the first round. If they don’t make a deal, the 49ers could look to add a receiver later in the draft for depth in case they end up moving on from Samuel later this offseason or when his contract is up at the end of the season.

BIGGEST NEED

San Francisco was fairly quiet in free agency, with the most significant move the signing of former Chiefs cornerback Charvarius Ward. Most of the other moves focused on adding depth to the defensive line and upgrading special teams.

READ MORE: Giants Pitcher Anthony DeSclafani On 10-Day Injured List; Outfielder Steven Duggar On 60-Day IL

That leaves the biggest need heading into the draft at guard, where starter Laken Tomlinson left in free agency, leaving 2021 second-rounder Aaron Banks and Daniel Brunskill as the leading contenders to start. But Banks was unable to get on the field much as a rookie, and Brunskill was overmatched at times and could be better suited to a reserve role in which he could play both tackle and guard.

OTHER NEEDS

The Niners also could use help at safety with long-time starter Jaquiski Tartt still unsigned as a free agent, along with center and right tackle.

The Niners are unsure 36-year-old center Alex Mack will return for another season, but no matter what he decides the team still could look for a long-term option there. Mike McGlinchey, the No. 9 overall pick in 2018, is playing out his fifth-year option at right tackle and coming off a season-ending quadriceps injury. So adding depth there could be an option.

STRENGTH IN NUMBERS

Despite the missing picks from the Lance trade, the 49ers are expected to be busy on the second and third days of the draft. San Francisco got five compensatory picks for losing free agents, along with special picks for losing Robert Saleh to coach the Jets and Martin Mayhew to take over as GM in Washington.

One of those picks went to Miami in the Lance deal, but San Francisco will still have a second-round pick, two thirds, one fourth, one fifth, three sixths and one seventh.

LONG WAIT

This would be the first time since 1996 that the Niners won’t make a pick in the first round after using that pick the previous year to trade up for receiver JJ Stokes. San Francisco’s first pick that draft didn’t make much of an impact with second-round defensive end Israel Ifeanyi playing just three career games. But the 49ers did come away with a star that year, taking Hall of Fame receiver Terrell Owens in the third round.

We’re three weeks into the NFL off-season and the San Francisco 49ers are among the busiest teams in the league.

From signing their own players to being active in the free agent market to making the biggest off-season trade, the Niners have taken many steps since the end of the 2020 season with a 6-10 record.

With all of the moves that have taken place, The Athletic’s Sheil Kapadia says one thing is obvious: The 49ers ran out of patience in the quarterback position.

“The 49ers have won six games or fewer in three out of four seasons with Kyle Shanahan as head coach. A large part of that was Jimmy Garoppolo’s injuries. He has missed 23 out of a possible 48 games in the last three seasons. So San Francisco took a giant step towards moving up to 3rd in the draft for a quarterback. “

After Garoppolo had missed 10 games this season, head coach Kyle Shanahan and John Lynch made 3rd place for the biggest success of the last few weeks. Without Jimmy G as a starter, the Niners are only 6-17 seasons in the last three games.

Nick Mullens took most of the snapshots while Garoppolo paused, and we saw how badly the team stalled. San Francisco could have gotten into the postseason with an average game from Mullens, but they couldn’t rise to the challenge.

In his last five starts of the 2020 season, Mullens flipped the ball ten times, resulting in 37 points for the opponent. Every quarterback has interceptions, but the frequency with which Mullens makes incorrect throws that he only misses completely where the defender is on the field was frustrating.

The Niners struggled with a number of injuries but were still able to qualify for the playoffs. Lynch and Shanahan saw this and decided that given Garoppolo’s injury history, they needed to address the QB position.

It wasn’t surprising to see the 49ers try to get another QB to either sit behind Garoppolo or to push him, but a lot of people didn’t see the deal coming.

Lynch and Shanahan have announced they will keep Garoppolo for the next season, but that could change if a team comes up with an intriguing package for the quarterback.

Kapadia also asked Over the Cap’s Jason Fitzgerald about San Francisco’s off-season, saying why he didn’t like the deal the All-Pro left with Trent Williams.

“I hated the deal with Trent Williams,” said Fitzgerald. “I think $ 23 million a year, and I know the front end is about $ 20 million a year, but a man who has missed three or four games a season in the past was banned once, 33 years old. I hate this contract. “

Pro Football Focus gave Williams the highest mark of all tackles last season. The 32-year-old missed two games last season and has not played suitably for all 16 games since 2013.

Williams’ signing gives the 49ers stability in one of the most critical positions in football. Losing Williams to the free agency would have changed the team’s draft plan significantly, and it’s likely the Niners wouldn’t have risen to pick a QB. They should have addressed the left attack position in the draft by taking a player like Rashawn Slater from the northwest.

While giving a 32-year-old a six-year contract is questionable for some, San Francisco has structured the contract to have some defaults towards the end of the term.

The Niners gave Williams $ 30. Millions upfront with a massive signing bonus. He is slated to make just over $ 40 million in the next two years and just over $ 80 million in the first four seasons. Although the average is around $ 20 million per year, his cap hit for 2021 is only $ 8.2 million per over the cap.

The 49ers could move on after their fourth year with minimal financial penalties from Williams. The team will have just over $ 6 million in dead money on the books for the 2025 campaign if they choose to cut the left tackle.
