As issues of access to safe drinking water make headlines in the United States, ABC Owned Television Stations is partnering with ABC News and National Geographic to produce a three-part documentary series entitled “Our America: Trouble on Tap.” The first episode will air April 21 — in time for Earth Day on April 22 — on ouramericaabc.com and April 22 on Hulu. “Our America: Trouble on Tap” is a three-part documentary series — produced by Tracy J. Wholf, coordinating producer of the climate division at ABC News, and Justin Allen, executive producer at ABC Owned Television Stations — that explores pollution, climate change and aging infrastructure, which is gradually becoming an opportunity for more and more communities in undermine the United States’ access to free and potable drinking water. Over the past few decades, the safe and available drinking water that many Americans have taken for granted is now under threat. ABC Owned Television Stations and its data journalism division, whose data was used to show the severity of the contamination across the United States and the communities it affected, will work with ABC News and National Geographic to take viewers across America to witness this development to investigate crisis and offer solutions along the way.

We focus on specific problems, possible solutions, and tell the stories of those who experience it firsthand.”

The documentary series will consist of three hour-long episodes:

• The first episode, “Life with Forever Chemicals” premiere April 21, takes a look at per- and polyfluoroalkyl substance contamination in North Carolina. This episode takes viewers to Cape Fear, North Carolina, often referred to as ground zero for PFAS water pollution, or water contaminated by toxic “forever” chemicals. For decades, more than 250,000 people’s drinking water supply was contaminated after a chemical company dumped toxic PFAS into the Cape Fear River. Years after the contamination first became public knowledge, the region continues to grapple with ongoing health problems, multiple lawsuits and the construction of costly water treatment plants as it grapples with decades of chronic exposure.
• The second episode, “Chicago’s $8 Billion Water Problem”Premiered in July and examine lead pipes and water infrastructure in Chicago. More than 30 years after the federal government banned lead in plumbing, lead-based plumbing still carries water to millions of homes across America, including Chicago, which has one of the highest concentrations of lead plumbing in the country. With an estimated 400,000 lead pipes serving Chicago-area residents with water, “this is an $8 billion problem,” according to Chicago Water Commissioner Andrea Cheng. This episode examines the key water infrastructure issues to see if bills like Senator Cory Booker’s Water Infrastructure Funding Act and others will help ease some of the financial burden on communities and really help solve the many problems faced by… affecting residents, often in communities that are predominantly Black, Latino and Indigenous.
• The third episode, “Drilling in California’s Water Crisis”Premiered in August and focus on the impact of the drought in California. As of late November 2022, the US Drought Monitor showed that nearly 85% of California was experiencing severe drought conditions or more. While current drought conditions have changed due to recent winter 2023 rainfall, California continues to experience statewide water emergencies as resources continue to vary based on current conditions. This episode takes viewers to Orosi, California to check in with a family whose water supply is due to expire by the state in four months. What happens to the water they use for drinking, cooking and bathing? California Gov. Gavin Newsom’s Water Resilience and Storage Plan Under Review; and the process of subsidence, the gradual subsidence or subsidence of an area of ​​land, is also studied, including the process in relation to water and the effects it can have on land.

A Tudor mansion in Russian Hill once owned by actor Nicolas Cage is finally under contract after years on the market.

The six-bedroom, six-and-a-half-bathroom home at 898 Francisco Street was owned by the actor in the late 2000s for just a few years, though there are no reports he actually lived in the house at all. He sold it at a loss in July 2008 for $7.7 million.

In its recent quest to find a buyer, the home was originally listed for sale in February 2017 for $12 million. The price dropped to $11 million later that year and was then removed from the market for most of 2018. It was relisted for $11 million in October 2018 and later had its price slashed yet again on March 4, 2020 to $10 million. The home was listed and removed two more times before its current pending sale price.

In addition to the 1914 home, an adjacent 40×60 ft. lot was also available for sale with the home for $3 million. Listing agent Mark Levinson with Compass declined to comment on whether this was included in the sale and didn’t want to comment further to SFGATE on the pending offer.

When SFGATE spoke to Levinson in 2019, he called the house a “fixer.” “People look at it as a fixer,” said Levinson at the time. “There are only a certain amount of people who have that kind of money and that kind of bandwidth. People in this price range are so busy and don’t have time for a renovation. Homes that do sell tend to be renovated and gorgeous. I think if the house were done, it would sell overnight.”

Based on previous photos, it looks like some of those renovations, especially in the kitchen, have been completed. The home also features a gym, a wine cellar, an attached two-car garage, garden and sweeping views from most rooms.

This area of ​​Russian Hill is sometimes known as the city’s “Gold Coast” and the block boasts many wealthy and well-known owners. Steve Jobs’ widow Laurene Powell Jobs purchased an 1888 mansion of similar size in 2018 in an all-cash, $16.5 million deal just down the street.

A San Francisco mansion once owned by the star of “National Treasure,” Nicolas Cage, has found a buyer.

The home had last been listed for $9.95 million, and is now in “pending sale” status, The Real Deal reported.

The buyer also has an option to purchase an adjoining lot for an additional $3 million—which could push the final price upward.

Located on Russian Hill, with iconic views of the San Francisco Bay and Alcatraz Island, the historic home was the subject of a popular painting. However, it had a hard time landing a buyer.

Built in 1914, the four-story Tudor Revival initially came on the market in 2017 for $12 million.

Later that year, the price dropped to $10.95 million and stayed at that price through 2020. This March, the price was further discounted to $9.95 million.

While the prime location was a huge selling point, it needed a refresh. Renovations were recently completed, with updates including a modern kitchen with new counters and cabinets, refinished flooring, a redone powder room, and exterior paint.

After the renovation, the 6,305-square-foot home maintains much of the original architecture.

The front entrance has a Gothic stone archway. The main floor includes a library with a wood-burning fireplace, a formal dining room with leaded glass windows and original wood detail, and an elegant living room with windows overlooking the bay.

The second level features the primary suite, with two dressing rooms and a large bathroom. There’s an additional en suite bedroom and a mirrored wet bar on this level.

The property also comes with a two-car garage. If the buyer picks up the adjacent lot, a guesthouse or office could be added to create a true compound.

As for the Cage connection, the star apparently picked up the place and the next-door lot for $9.4 million in 2006. He sold both properties in 2008 at a loss, for $8.5 million, the Real Deal notes.

The movie star had previously owned a grand Victorian in nearby Pacific Heights, which he sold in 2005 for $3 million.

The renovated 7,000-square-foot abode came back on the market again in 2018 for $12 million. After some price cuts, it sold for $5.9 million, less than half of its original asking price.

That home still has some Cage touches: The actor added stained-glass panels featuring underwater scenes with octopuses during his stay.

SAN JOSE (KPIX) – Less than four weeks before the city of San Jose is due to present its plans to clean up hundreds of homeless camps near Mineta San Jose Airport, some airport residents have begun moving to even larger premises nearby. owned by Apple.

“Everyone knows there are homeless people out there, they just don’t want to look at them, I think,” said Lynn Shipman, who now lives on the sprawling Apple property in north San Jose.

Airport officials have until July 31 to notify the FAA of their plan to remove the camps that have been set up on 40 acres of land directly in the trajectory of the jets on their final approach to the runway. The city said there were up to 200 people, but official figures put the number between 400 and 500. The FAA has threatened to withhold millions of dollars in funding if the city fails to do so.

When the city began “cleaning up” the airport last week, some residents began moving from the airport to the Apple property about 3 miles away. Apple-owned lots bounded by Trimble Road, Orchard Parkway, Component Drive, North 1st Street, Charcot Avenue, and Highway 101 total approximately 55 acres.

According to Shipman, there are at least 30 people in the Apple camps, many with huge amounts of junk, rubble, RVs, tents and vehicles.

“And Apple, they’re not doing anything with this country at the moment. Why don’t you let the people stay until they do? ”Said Schiffsmann.

Robert Carlson, who also lives at the Apple warehouse, says “haters” who come to the site and start fires and destroy property are “shunned”. Carlson is reluctant to move into low-income homes as property storage is restricted.

“The problem is, you can’t bring anything. Most of the time you can’t bring anything with you. Cars clothes and that’s it. Lots of own mobile homes and everything else. It takes a long time to get an RV. And if we do, we don’t want to give it up, ”said Carlson.

Carlson, who spends his days collecting recycle for income, thought that Apple, the world’s most valuable company, owns the land.

“Tell you what, if you are such a wealthy company, you could help us all make this place better. Instead of trying to get us out of here when the company is this big, show that they care, ”said Carlson.

Local activist Shaunn Cartwright made no comment on the Apple warehouse, but said empty packages like the former Orchard Supply Hardware store on Bird Avenue are examples of how technology companies can alleviate the homelessness crisis.

“There is no plausible defense of sitting there and saying ‘I am going to leave this land empty’ and not acting as a good neighbor and providing safe parking spaces for these people in dire need. We need technology to be a good neighbor, we need it to enable safe parking on this land for a year or two before homes are built for these people, ”said Cartwright.

KPIX asked Apple for a comment. A representative said the company was formulating an answer.
