SAN FRANCISCO – In the words of a scout, “The Warriors machine is back and buzzing.” He was quick to notice the absence of one player: Kelly Oubre.

The Warriors will face their former affair for the first time on Wednesday night, which most basketball experts believe does not fit well into Golden State’s “read-and-react” system when they host the 5-3 Charlotte Hornets.

With a 5-1 record in the second of eight home games, the Warriors’ early returnees are looking good in the off-season. Your biggest steps in the independent agency – Otto Porter, Nemanja Bjelica and Andre Iguodala – have already paid off with these victories.

Additionally, coaches and teammates say they fit the profile of “high IQ” basketball players who tend to be successful alongside the freeform stylings of Stephen Curry and Draymond Green.

“We just added people who know how to play and move the ball,” said coach Steve Kerr. “On the first day of the camp it was already clear how well this team fits together.”

If you have it, you have it.

If you don’t, it’s even more obvious. And not everyone has gelled as quickly over the years as Porter and Bjelica. Both players’ ability to pass has sparked enthusiasm, and Porter’s hit rate of 43.8% from a distance ranks second on the team. While Bjelica’s shot has cooled, both players know where they are needed on the ground.

“I think over time guys make certain moves and you can kind of feel that,” said Green. “But if a guy doesn’t, you know right away. You know right away. It’s not that hard to see. You know right away. … I think we don’t have any this year (that don’t fit). We got our fair share, that’s for sure. ”

Owner Joe Lacob agreed, but also refused to give names.

“We had some problems with some players last year,” Lacob said on a recent NBC Sports Bay Area program.

The Warriors acquired Oubre in a deal with Oklahoma City after the 2019-20 season, and the former Kansas first-round pick provided a constant offensive while he was healthy. But his relationship with Golden State seemed bitter, and he commented after the season that he “wants to keep showing all the things I’m capable of and not being pigeonholed”.

Bjelica has credited Golden State’s offensive system for its revival, while Porter referred to the dressing room culture.

“It’s a very selfless group,” said Porter. “(We) hold each other accountable, and it starts with the head of the serpent. Steph (Curry) was an amazing leader and made sure everyone got acclimatized. ”

How do you find someone who fits your profile? There’s no metric Kerr knows better than a good old-fashioned feature film.

“Usually passing and cutting is a good barometer of whether a man can play. Does he keep moving the ball and make the cut at the right time when the defense shifts? ”Said Kerr. “If you see a guy on tape doing these things, it’s a pretty good sign he’s a high-IQ player.”

Oubre’s smooth transition to Charlotte shouldn’t be overlooked. With his fourth team in seven seasons, he signed a two-year deal worth $ 24.6 million. He is one of only two NBA players this year with multiple 20-point benefits from the bench and has started five more games.

His 14.5 points per game may look better on a stats sheet than Bjelica (5.8 ppg), Porter (6.3 ppg), or Iguodala (4.2 ppg), but the Warriors are thrilled with their contributions alongside scoring.

They helped the Warriors maintain their place in the NBA elite in terms of assists (28.7 per game; 2nd) and defensive efficiency (99.4 points per 100 possessions; 4th).

“I think the vets we added understand the NBA defense,” Kerr said. “We had a top 5 defense a year ago and we added Andre to the mix, one of the best defenders in the league and someone who knows our plans and covers and staff. … I just think we have a good groove. ”

When I first pulled up the Warriors Mailbag questions on Tuesday, over 80% of the inquiries I received were related to the report that the Pelicans might be interested in acting against Kelly Oubre Jr.

Can’t say it was a big surprise as Oubre’s offensive issues were already a big offense. But after specifically asking other non-Oubre questions, I got some good ones on a wide range of subjects. Here my answers:

@TheGoatWiseman: Will the warriors trade Oubre?

Tuesday’s The Athletic report that the Warriors were discussing “a possible deal” with Oubre with the Pelicans has garnered a lot of attention online, which is understandable: NBA fans love trade talks – especially one with a high-paying starter that all in one Shooting slump is stuck.

But the same report stated that talks with the pelicans have not gained momentum, and I don’t expect the warriors to be trading with Oubre anytime soon. You have to see what you have before you can deal with it. Oubre is only just beginning to understand the warrior system. If he can get more comfortable and start putting down some shots, I think he can be a worthy starting guardian for a playoff team.

His defense has already had its effect, and his age – he turned 25 last month – suggests he will only get better. That being said, I don’t think Oubre necessarily fits into the Warriors’ long-term plans. He’s going to be a free agent this summer, and I don’t think he’d want to return to Golden State just to be a backup wing behind Wiggins and Thompson.

If the Warriors get an offer on Oubre that would bring back someone who could help them for the next season and beyond, they’ll have to take a close look at it. Whether Golden State makes the playoffs this season – or even steals a first-round series – ultimately doesn’t matter that much. The important thing is to be able to chase a title in 2022.

            <iframe frameborder="0" width="100%" height="482" style="margin-bottom: 20px”>

“data-progressive =” true “data-component =” misc-iframe “data-url =” https://playlist.megaphone.fm?p=SFO6367504388 “>

@ thejosh21: Is Wiseman essentially sacrosanct at this point? Its upper limit seems too high to trade. Do you think they’d be ready to get him on a Beal deal or is his future just too bright?

I hesitate to label everyone on this team except Curry as sacrosanct. But apart from an absurdly good trade offer for him, Wiseman is going nowhere. The Warriors see it as a franchise building block that can become a preferred option when Curry, Green and Thompson are close to retiring.

@mcgboye: What is the Warriors’ final this season? You won’t win the title, so you will make the playoffs or develop talent?

Kerr would love to make the playoffs and maybe even win a first-round series, but his biggest goal is to get the Warriors to win next season when Thompson comes back from his torn Achilles tendon. The hope is that Golden State will bring its young people (Wiseman in particular) along, strengthen its bank, and emerge as a legitimate contender in 2022.

So far, I’d say the Warriors are on track to achieve these goals. The development of players like Paschall, Lee and Mulder bodes well for the future of Golden State.

@KThecelebrated: What are the chances that we keep the Timberwolves choice?

At the game on Wednesday evening against the Warriors in the Chase Center, the Timberwolves have the third worst record in the NBA with 4-12. If Minnesota finishes the season with the third worst record in the league, its first-round pick in 2021 won’t be any worse than No. 7, with the Timberwolves having odds of 14% at No. 1, 13.4% at No. 2, 12.7 % Quota for No. 3, 11.9% quota for No. 4, 14.8% quota for No. 5, 26% quota for No. 6 and 7.1% quota for No. 7.

In other words, Minnesota would have a 40.1% chance of finishing in the top three and a 59.9% chance of finishing in the four to seven range. The Warriors will get the election if the Timberwolves finish outside the top three, and they will get Minnesota’s unprotected selection for the first round in 2022 if it finishes in the top three in 2021.

As I wrote a few days ago, Golden State is hoping the Timberwolves will finish just below the top three this year. The 2021 draft class is the strongest in years, with at least a half-dozen prospects who could be future all-stars.

@witaglizzy: How do the Warriors feel about the development of Wiseman so far?

Big. When asked about Wiseman on Tuesday, Kerr said, “I think he’s well on schedule, probably ahead of schedule.”

I know that many fans took Kerr’s decision to bench Wiseman probably as a sign that Kerr was losing faith in the rookie, but that is nowhere near the case. It was clear that something had to change after the starting line-up got one of the worst ratings of any high-occupancy line-up in the NBA for the first 15 games of the season. As a youngster, Wiseman was the easiest player to move to the bench.

Had Kerr Oubre moved, he would have risked angering Oubre. An angry oubre could mean serious locker room problems. But Wiseman has little ego and played well after moving to the bench and hardly complained.

Also, at this point, Looney is a better defender than Wiseman. I think Wiseman will benefit from watching Looney defensively take advantage of the spaces and angles that the front office still believes will become a franchise center.

It’s important to keep track of things when talking about Wiseman. At the age of only 19 he averages 11.9 points at 51.3% shooting, 5.9 rebounds and 1.4 blocks in just 21.1 minutes per game. Those numbers are only more impressive when you consider that Wiseman played 69 minutes in college, didn’t have a summer league, and missed all three preseason shows with a positive coronavirus test.

@curtiefoo: How long will we see this new starting grid before Kerr makes another change? Three games? five games? Twenty games?

It’s difficult to say. If the first unit keeps getting the Warriors into quick starts, why should Kerr mess with it?

Nonetheless, let me say this: Golden State hasn’t forgotten that Wiseman is at the heart of its long-term response. If for whatever reason Looney started the rest of the season, I’d expect Wiseman to open as a starter next season. Its physical tools require just as much.

@GSWReddit: If the third two-way spot is awarded, who do you think the Warriors will be considering? Deyonta Davis was a surprising exclusion from the Santa Cruz squad. Could he be in the mix as extra big to throw on the pitch in point minutes?

Possibly. It’s really hard to predict something like a third two-way deal because I don’t know exactly which fringe players are available. I know some readers have considered the possibility of the Warriors bringing Justinian Jessup as part of a two-way deal, but I won’t see this until next season at the earliest.

Golden State often rewards players who did well in Santa Cruz. If the NBA grants the teams a third two-way deal, I could see the Warriors take the extra seat against someone like Kaleb Wesson, Ryan Taylor, Dwayne Sutton, Dusty Hannahs or Zach Norvell Jr Santa Cruz in the upcoming G-League -Bladder.
