TEAMS COMPARISON: Sunday’s game features two top ten special teams units built with different philosophies. The Burrow Bengals have stitched it together with largely first and second-year players, such as rookie punter Brad Robbins, rookie personal protector Jordan Battle, rookie punt returner Charlie Jones, rookie gunner Andrei Iosivas and second-year long snapper Cal Adomitis. Although the two linchpins are vets, linebackers Akeem Davis-Gaither and Markus Bailey, Davis-Gaither just returned from a month-long knee injury. In his first year playing, safety Tycen Anderson was tied for the NFL lead in special teams tackles before suffering a season-ending ACL tear in the Oct. 29 win against the 49ers.

Meanwhile, the Texans with a quarterback on a rookie deal, have veterans such as nine-year linebacker Neville Hewitt and fifth-year cornerback Ka’dar Hollman who are in the NFL’s top 20 in special teams tackles, per PFF.

“They don’t give up anything,” said Simmons of a kick and punt defense that is both ranked third. “What they’re taking advantage of right now is they have not had a quarterback there in some time. And so they can pay the lower half of the roster higher than what the rest of the league can because they don’t have to pay the quarterback yet. They have a bunch of good veteran special teams players and they’re taking advantage of that.”

STATE OF TEAMS: Despite the loss of Anderson, Simmons is bullish on his young guys.

Robbins, he says, has bounced back from his nightmarish 10-punt opener in the rain and been solid. He particularly points to the last punt in San Francisco with 19 seconds left and a 14-point lead.

“It didn’t seem big to a lot of people, but it is to me, how we handled the situation at the end … We ran the play clock down. We called timeout. We talked about the rush. But then I told him, this punt has to be out of bounds,” Simmons said. “Because there’s going to come a time it’s a seven-point game, or it’s a three-point game with 20 seconds left where that ball’s got to be out of bounds. And he executed it perfectly, kicked it out of bounds.”

Translation: If the punt in the AFC title game with 30 seconds left had gone out of bounds, the Bengals could have been in the Super Bowl again. At the very least, overtime.

Simmons says one guy can’t replace Anderson because of his unique size and speed, but keep an eye on Battle. Battle, the third-round safety from Alabama, bowled over Simmons with his 18-minute interview at the NFL scouting combine that had Simmons drawing in his notes they had to have him. The only other guy he did that with this year is future Lions running back Jahmyr Gibbs.

“Jordan’s in a bit more of a position where he can affect the game better or, or more. He’s in critical spots. He’s playing the old spots that Mike Thomas played,” Simmons said of his old captain still around on the practice squad.

“He’s an inside player on kickoff. He’s not had to change with the injury to Tyson … He’s trying to handle a lot right now in addition he’s got a role on defense, too. So there’s a lot going on for him. And I think he’s managed it pretty well for the most part. He’s a smart kid that you can tell has played a lot of football in his career and some things come naturally to him. Some things take work, but he’s willing to put the work in and do it.”

A historic townhouse in the prestigious Pacific Heights neighborhood of San Francisco that was owned by tech billionaire investor Orlando Bravo has sold for $13,875 million, according to the deed filed last week.

Situated on a corner lot, the four-story townhouse has 7,045 square feet of living space, including six bedrooms and seven bathrooms, according to the listing with Nina Hatvany of Compass.

Ms. Hatvany listed the property last September for $17 million and found a buyer in early March. The sale closed last Friday, listing records show.

The seller, Mr. Bravo, purchased the property in 2012 for $8.2 million, property records show. He is the co-founder and managing partner of Thoma Bravo, a private equity investment firm that specializes in software and technology-enabled services sectors. The Puerto Rican-born businessman has a net worth of $6.3 billion, according to Forbes’s real-time estimate.

Mr. Bravo did not immediately respond to an email request sent to his company.

The buyer was listed as an Idaho-registered limited liability company.

Ms. Hatvany declined to comment on the sale or parties involved.

The townhouse, built in 1894, retains many of its period details, including rich woodwork and paneling throughout. The main level is dedicated to entertaining, with formal dining, living and family rooms, and a chef’s kitchen with a deck and water views, according to the listing.

Other amenities include a wine cellar, a wet bar, a playroom, a roof deck, a landscaped garden, and a three-car garage, the listing said.

Although the sales price was a more than $3 million discount from the listing price of $17 million, it still marks the highest price for a San Francisco home sold so far this year, according to Multiple Listing Service.

Since the beginning of the pandemic, the price of housing has risen in some relatively cheap places in the US and has fallen in some expensive places. This dynamic was evident even before Covid-19, when superstar cities in the US and abroad began to praise themselves out of reach for many of the workers who kept them going. Then came a contagious disease that (1) temporarily shut down most of the things that make superstar cities attractive, and (2) prompted employers to experiment with remote working on an unprecedented scale, making it easier to get superstar city jobs to separate from superstar cities real estate prices.

Even so, there is this annoying thing that happens when the price of housing goes up sharply in a place where it used to be cheap: the place stops being cheap. Look at Boise, Idaho, which saw the strongest rental increases last year of the 519 US cities that Apartment List economists make monthly rent estimates. Four years ago, it was 25% less than the national average to rent a two-bedroom apartment or house in Boise, and it was 17% less early last year. From April it was 1% more expensive.

No, 1% is not much more and Boise remains a bargain compared to many places people arrive. There are 30 California cities in Apartment List’s database with average April two-bedroom rents more than double that of Boises $ 1,144. But for those who don’t earn big city wages and don’t have bank accounts replenished with real estate profits in big cities, Boise gets a little pricey. It’s been a while for those who want to buy rather than rent: According to Zillow’s house value index, the price of the “typical” mid-range home in the Boise metropolitan area was higher than that of the typical home at the national level in 2013. (Apartment List also publishes average rents for cities and subway areas, but I chose to use two-bedroom apartment rents for consistency as the averages can mask differences in the housing mix from place to place.) The National Association of Realtors publishes a similar quarterly index of housing affordability in major cities. However, given that rents have increased in some places over the past few months, it seemed worth trying a more timely measure. And yes, I could have done something similar with Zillow’s house value data, but renters could use a little more attention, right?

My practice found that there seem to be some interesting things about housing affordability right now. Judging by the number of hours an average wage worker would have to work in a large metropolitan area (of a million people or more) to pay the average monthly rent for a two-bedroom apartment, the usual suspects on the west and east coasts are still pretty unaffordable but also some places that might surprise you.

This measure makes Orlando less affordable than San Francisco and Austin and Las Vegas less affordable than San Jose. In absolute terms, of course, they are not more expensive; Someone moving out of San Francisco or San Jose would still find all of these places to be pretty cheap, especially if they could keep working on wages in San Francisco or San Jose. But most people in Orlando, Austin, and Las Vegas don’t have that option.

Search all 177 subway areas for which both wage and rental data are available, and nine of the top 15 areas are in California, mostly smaller subway areas within commuter traffic or at least walking a few times to the office – one week away from the major coastal metropolises of the state. (Metropolitan Boise ranks 70th in this ranking with 60.6 hours.)
