As the San Francisco Examiner first reported, Philz Coffee has closed its headquarters in San Francisco's Dogpatch neighborhood and moved to Oakland.

Both the headquarters and the café of the popular coffeehouse chain at 1258 Minnesota Street had to close as a result.

“With nearly our entire corporate team working entirely from home, the existing lease no longer met our needs as a company,” said Mahesh Sadarangani, CEO of Philz Coffee, in a statement provided to SFGATE. “As a result, we have decided to close the Dogpatch location and relocate our corporate headquarters to our roastery in Oakland, California.”

Qualified retail employees were offered jobs at other nearby Philz stores, Sadarangani's statement said. In October, Philz closed its original San Francisco cafe at the corner of 24th and Folsom after 20 years.

According to Mission Local, the company initially told employees that the 24th Street closure was because the company did not want to renew its lease. However, the building is owned by an LLC run by Philz co-founder Jacob Jaber, Mission Local reported. Employees told Mission Local they suspected other reasons for the closure, from high maintenance costs to the main store's reputation as a “rebellious store,” with employees having previously attempted to unionize, according to Mission Local.

The company still has about a dozen cafes across the city, from Embarcadero to Noe Valley to Ocean Avenue.

“We are thrilled to welcome Philz to its permanent home here in the city,” Oakland Mayor Sheng Thao said on X after news of the coffee chain's move broke. “It's not just about coffee; it's about community, and we're honored that a huge local favorite has chosen Oakland as its home.”

(OAKLAND, Calif.) – Officials in Oakland, California, despite a trademark lawsuit from the city of San Francisco, approved changing the name of the city's airport to include “San Francisco,” while also filing their own lawsuit against the neighboring city over the dispute over the name change.

The Oakland Board of Port Commissioners voted unanimously Thursday to rename Metropolitan Oakland International Airport to San Francisco Bay Oakland International Airport. The name change has now taken effect on the airport's website and social media accounts. The airport's three-letter code – OAK – and visual brand remain unchanged.

The board said the new name is part of the port's efforts to “strengthen and expand the airport.”

“Our board came to these conversations with a shared love of Oakland and a desire to see our city and airport thrive,” Port Commission President Barbara Leslie said in a statement after Thursday’s vote. “We move forward with a commitment to honoring our past while building a stronger, more inclusive future.”

After announcing the proposed name change in late March, the board voted unanimously to change the airport's name in a first reading vote on April 11. Leslie said the port subsequently met with “dozens of community leaders and stakeholders” to hear their concerns about the change .

The city of San Francisco filed a federal trademark lawsuit over the plan on April 18, arguing that the proposed name would cause confusion among travelers and infringe on the San Francisco International Airport (SFO) trademark. The city attorney's office said it filed its lawsuit after “several attempts” to work with the Port of Oakland on alternative names.

Two days before Thursday's vote that allowed the Port of Oakland to move forward with the renaming, San Francisco City Attorney David Chiu “strongly” urged the Port of Oakland Board of Commissioners to reconsider their plans.

In a letter to the board, he urged commissioners to “instead engage in discussions with the city and others about an alternative name that would achieve the port's goals without violating the city's branding and causing confusion and harm to the port.” consumers.”

San Francisco's lawsuit seeks an injunction to immediately stop use of the name and orders declaring that Oakland has violated the SFO sign and requiring the city to return all materials to destroy files that contain the new name. The lawsuit also seeks unspecified damages and fees.

San Francisco holds the U.S. federal trademark registration for the “San Francisco International Airport” brand, the first commercial use of which occurred in 1954, the city’s lawsuit says.

In a countersuit filed Thursday, Port of Oakland asked the court to rule that SFO's trademark does not extend to the use of “San Francisco Bay,” arguing that there are multiple airports elsewhere with names that share the same geographic location identifier, for example London, Paris, Beijing, Chicago and Dallas.

“The San Francisco Attorney General’s decision to pursue litigation is an attempt to halt consumer education, prevent expanded air travel options for Bay Area residents and visitors, and is a misuse of San Francisco taxpayer dollars,” Port Attorney Mary Richardson said in an explanation. “OAK is committed to improving its flight routes and improving competition for the benefit of all visitors and residents of the San Francisco Bay Area, including those residing in the City and County of San Francisco. We stand ready and willing to work with SFO to expand choice for travelers and invite any productive dialogue to that end.”

The Port of Oakland's lawsuit does not seek monetary compensation or damages.

In a statement to ABC News, Jen Kwart, a spokeswoman for the San Francisco District Attorney's Office, said it was “disappointing that Oakland chose this path and ignored our numerous offers to cooperate on alternative names and avoid litigation.”

“We have strong federal trademark infringement claims against Oakland, and they have left us no choice but to pursue the next steps in our lawsuit,” the statement continued.

In 2023, 11.2 million passengers came through Oakland airport, while San Francisco airport had 50 million passengers last year.

SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) – Monk's Kettle, a craft beer bar and gastropub on 16th Street in the Mission District, announced Tuesday that it is moving across the Bay to Oakland. In a lengthy statement titled “Reflections on a 16-year run on 16th Street,” bar owner Christian Albertson explained the reasons for the move and commented on how SF had changed over the years.

In the statement, Albertson cited “tremendous changes in the Mission District, the craft beer scene, the restaurant industry and the general business environment in SF.”

“We literally live in a different world now than when we opened,” he wrote. Monk's Kettle existed before the local craft beer scene as we know it, according to Albertson, opening in a time before SF Beer Week, when the minimum wage was $9.17 and social media consisted of MySpace.

The night train from San Francisco to LA is just a few inches closer to reality

The letter cited “seismic changes” in the city’s demographics since 2007.

“When we opened, the Mission was full of restaurant workers, artists, working people: our people. For the first nine years of our tenure, our kitchen was open until 1 a.m. every night and we kicked people out at 2 a.m. Back then, we had a second rush for dinner at 10 or 11 p.m., when people from the industry got off work and came over for a drink and a meal after their shift.”

Other factors Albertson cited for the city's change included the introduction of Postmates and other delivery services, a shift toward a tech economy in which workplaces offered employees free food and drink on the job, and its transient nature of tech contract workers.

“San Francisco is a transient place, even more so than ever, and the city’s economic situation is making it increasingly impossible to put down roots,” Albertson wrote.

“There was a time when SF was the place to be, and we hope it can return to that status,” the letter continues, “but currently there seems to be a reason why everyone is looking have fled to a better path somewhere else.” .”

Monk's Kettle plans to reopen a new tavern called The Monk's Kettle Oakland in Oakland's Rockridge neighborhood.

“In many ways, we are striving to go back to the beginning, to the time when we were surrounded by our community and were that community,” Albertson said.

Monk's Kettle plans to open its Oakland location in the fall. According to a report from SF Eater, the Mission District location plans to keep its doors open through June.

The Mission District will have one less place for casual vibes and upscale beer and burgers: The Monk's Kettle is closing its original location at 3141 16th Street and moving to Oakland's Rockridge neighborhood. According to a press release, the 16th Street location will remain open through June; The Monk's team will then move operations to the Oakland space and plans to host a grand opening in early fall. In the press release, co-owner Christian Albertson cites an expired rental agreement and the possibility of a new location with larger space and better offerings as the reason for the move. The San Rafael outpost remains unchanged.

As part of the farewell, Albertson also wrote a letter titled “Reflections on a 16-Year Run on 16th Street,” in which he discussed the vastly different landscape in San Francisco than when the dimly lit destination for hazy IPAs and pretzel rolls opened . Albertson says that when he opened in 2007, San Francisco was a “community.” [that] was more focused on going out and experiencing the world through its restaurants, bars and shops.” The app-based delivery boom in the early 2010s for a gastropub was never a good thing, he writes. If 20 percent of every sale goes to another company, the money dries up—plus the experience of hanging out with friends over a basket of fries and a Cellarmaker beer. “For the first nine years of our tenure, our kitchen was open until 1 a.m. every night and we kicked people out at 2 a.m.,” the note reads in part. “These days, closing at 11 p.m. often feels too late.”

In addition to changing restaurant trends, Albertson cites the recent influx of tech workers as a major problem for his industry. Instead of people in neighborhoods like the Mission investing and taking the time to become regulars at bars and restaurants, “the workers at these companies are here on short-term contracts with contracts for a year (or less)” and “that's what they are.” far less inclined to support their local district; They're more likely to head to desirable hotspots before heading to wherever the next job takes them.” He says these reasons and more make San Francisco more ephemeral than ever, adding to the reality of being a small business owner here make challenge.

The Monk's Kettle will take over the former Citron space at 5484 College Avenue. The release touts an open floor plan for a large bar — fans of the business can expect the lion's head bar to move to the East Bay — and a dining room with a large back patio next to a lemon tree and a trellis overhead. Parklets in front of the restaurant expand seating capacity. Closing events and sales, including a time travel tour of vintage menus and cellar beers, will take place in the following months. Updates will be posted on Monk's Kettle's social media channels. “So we head to Rockridge to start the new neighborhood bar,” Albertson’s letter continued. “We hope to see you all there.”

Monk's Kettle (3141 16th Street) will remain open through June and is open Sunday through Thursday from noon to 11 p.m. and Friday and Saturday from noon to midnight.

The Oakland Athletics no longer have to wonder where they will play in the next few seasons. That won't make the long goodbye any easier.

The A's responded announcing that this will be their last year in Oakland with a mixture of sadness and relief.

“At least as a player, you know where you’re going,” outfielder Seth Brown said Friday before a game against the Tigers in Detroit. “There's obviously a lot of moving parts, a lot of things that we're not privy to, so it's just been kind of a waiting game for us. Where are we going? Where will we be? So I think.” With that knowledge alone, at least we know where we're going to play next year.

Vivek Ranadivé, owner of the Triple-A Sacramento River Cats, and John Fisher, owner of the Oakland Athletics, announced Thursday that the A's will temporarily relocate to Sutter Health Park in West Sacramento for at least three seasons. The A's move to Las Vegas after a new ballpark is built.

The River Cats, affiliated with the San Francisco Giants, will continue to play at the same facility.

Fisherman was unable to reach an agreement with Oakland city officials to extend the lease at the Oakland Coliseum, which expires at the end of this season. The A's have played in the city since 1968.

“There's a direction now that we've talked a lot about,” Oakland A's manager Mark Kotsay said. “We have time to think about what that really means from an organizational perspective, about the history we've had in Oakland, since this is the last season. There are a lot of emotions behind it.”

It will cause turmoil not only among the players and staff, but also among the members of the organization who work behind the scenes.

“At the end of the day, we know where we’re going to be in the next three seasons after the end of this year, and that in itself gives a little bit of stability,” Kotsay said. “At the same time, it’s challenging in some ways in the present to think about the finality of this organization in Oakland.”

Sacramento will be a much smaller environment to host a major league team. Ranadivé said the River Cats venue currently seats 16,000 when counting the stands, the grass behind center field and standing room only.

First baseman Ryan Noda is concerned about facilities. He hopes significant improvements will be made, similar to what the Toronto Blue Jays did at Buffalo's Triple-A facility. The Blue Jays played at Sahlen Field in Buffalo in 2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic.

“New walls, new dugouts, new locker rooms – everything they needed to be a big league stadium,” said Noda, who played a few games in Sacramento as a minor leaguer. “As long as we can do something like that, it will be fine. But it will definitely be different than playing in stadiums that hold 40,000 spectators.”

Kotsay is confident the upgrades will happen.

“I know it’s going to be Major League Baseball quality,” he said. “It has to be Major League Baseball quality. I know the Players Association will make sure that happens, just like they did in Buffalo.”

The A's will have to deal with this for the rest of this season Small home crowd and disappointed fans.

“We feel sad for the fans, the die-hard fans that always come to our games, always support us, always support the guys that wear the jersey,” Noda said.

June 16,1943-March 5, 2018

Ginny Collins was the middle child of a Methodist minister, and her family moved frequently during their childhood. When she entered Ursinus College, in Collegeville, Pennsylvania, she could finally join a class new as any other freshman. She excelled in college and played on the varsity badminton and field hockey teams. After graduation, she went to Israel in 1967 to free up kibbutz workers to defense teams (she gained a lifelong antipathy towards eggplants). Then she traveled in Europe before settling in Berkeley and later Oakland.
Ginny was one of the early workers at Taxi Unlimited, a collective. She drove cab for years and was often requested by riders who knew she could be depended upon to give an honest answer about policy questions of all types. After Taxi, she became a plumber, joining longtime women’s trade advocate Naomi Friedman in her plumbing business. She retired from plumbing after an accident.
Above all, Ginny was fearless and passionate. Her passions included her friends, to whom she was utterly loyal; her animals, Roger and Louie; the San Francisco Giants (though she resented being priced out after enduring many years at Candlestick); the 49ers; and underdogs of all stripes. She was a mean ragtime pianist, enjoyed singing songs of the ’30s and ’40s, and played second base for the East Bay Blues, a hapless but happy softball team in the Oakland Rec League.
She is survived by her relatives including her two brothers, Price and Stephen Collins, and by her many friends who will miss her constancy, dry wit and incisive, broad range thinking. Donations in her name can be made to Girls Inc. of Alameda County.

Philz Coffee company has closed its longtime headquarters in San Francisco’s Dogpatch neighborhood and moved its offices across the bay to Oakland.

In a statement, the company’s chief executive, Mahesh Sadarangani, said the company’s needs had changed over time.

“Dogpatch has been our home for many years, housing our corporate offices and a retail location,” Sadarangani said. “However, with nearly all our corporate team fully remote, the existing lease no longer aligned with our needs as a company.

“As a result, we have decided to close the Dogpatch location and move our corporate headquarters to our roasting facility” in Oakland, he said.

“We are offering all eligible retail team members positions at other nearby Philz locations, and we look forward to continuing to be a part of the community and having a strong presence in the Bay Area.”

The move, which also closes a cafe at the headquarters’ former Minnesota Street address, comes months after the San Francisco-born coffee chain shuttered its original location on 24th Street in the Mission District.

The chain traces its roots to a convenience store run by Phil Jaber, who opened the first eponymously named Philz on New Year’s Day 2003. It quickly grew into a retail phenomenon, expanding across the Bay Area, into several Southern California counties and half a dozen locations in Chicago, according to the company’s website.

The company ended a six-year stint in Washington, D.C., in early 2023 due to “changing market conditions,” per Eater DC.
