Despite a pronounced slowdown in the relative number of condos and single-family homes newly listed for sale over the past couple of quarters, driven by a jump in the cost of debt and sellers being unable or unwilling to accept an ongoing drop in values in order to move, the net number of single-family homes and condos on the market in San Francisco continues to inch up, driven by an even greater slowdown in the pace of sales.

While listed inventory is currently 14 percent lower than at the same time last year, driven by a drop in listings for condos versus single-family homes, it’s still 30 higher than average over the past decade, 60 percent higher than prior to the pandemic and over twice as high as in 2015, with a third of active listings having been reduced at least once and the average asking price per square foot of the homes which are in contract poised to drop back under $900 per square foot.

As we outlined last month: It’s Not Exactly Cheap, but It Is [Getting] Cheaper in San Francisco, none of which should catch any plugged-in readers, other than the most obstinate, by surprise.

On Saturday, the San Francisco Giants retired the number of Mississippi State legend Will Clark, best known at Magnolia State for his role in the “Thunder and Lightning” tandem.

During a pregame ceremony at Oracle Park in San Francisco, Clark became the 11th San Francisco Giant to have his number retired. The Giants placed Clark’s number 22 between Major League Baseball phenoms at Monte Irvin and Willie Mays, who wore numbers 20 and 24, respectively.

Although the Giants typically retire the number of players who are members of the MLB Hall of Fame, the team changed their protocol in 2018 when they retired Barry Bonds’ number and essentially decided to give Clark the same honor.

“This is my Hall of Fame. It’s incredible to be recognized with the incredible names of this historic franchise,” Clark said during his retirement speech. “I always wanted to win and make others around me winners. We all did that together here. I’m Will ‘the Thrill’ Clark, I’m a part of San Francisco and I’m a giant forever.”

The Giants originally planned to hold Clark’s retirement ceremony in 2020, but the COVID-19 pandemic caused the event to be postponed by two years. The delay seemed a little random, as the retirement came in 2022, 22 years after Clark’s last game as a Giant and one honoring the number 22.

During his 15-year MLB career, Clark appeared in six All-Star games, won two Silver Slugger Awards, won a Golden Glove Award and hit 284 home runs.

OAKLAND (CBS SF) – Amid an ongoing debate over the role and size of city police forces, 10 years of Oakland police data shows that the number of shootings and homicides decreased as the city’s police force grew.

Although the size of the emergency services and the number of homicides and shootings have fluctuated from year to year, the trend is clear. From 2011 to 2014 there were an average of 105 homicides per year and an average of 501 executions. Those numbers declined to an average of 85 and 334 from 2017 to 2020 as the average police force increased from 635 in the earlier 4 years to 742 in the later 4 year period.

CONTINUE READING: UPDATE: One lane open after an overturned gasoline tanker headed north on I-680. was shut down

“Having a well-staffed police department is part of” a holistic approach to public safety, Oakland Mayor Libby Schaaf said on Twitter the day before the city council was expected to vote on hiring more officials. “We must prioritize ending trauma and loss from crime and violence.”

The statistics come from an intense debate in Oakland about the size and role of its police force.

Following the death of George Floyd in the summer of 2020, some community activists vigorously advocated downsizing the police force. A community group, the Anti-Police Terror Project (APTP), helped divert millions of dollars from a proposed police budget to the Violence Prevention Department, which works with people likely to be perpetrators or victims of violent crimes. This money was earmarked for two police academies. Upcoming academies start with more than 30 cadets each.

But in 2020 the number of deaths from shootings rose again in Oakland, with 109 people killed by gunfire. By early December this year, 129 people had been killed in shootings, including a security guard who was shot while protecting a television crew. Two months earlier, an alleged robbery suspect had been killed in a firefight at a gas station with former police captain Ersie Joyner in Oakland, who was seriously injured.

Meanwhile, the police force has shrunk, the number of employees was reduced to 676 in early December and a further decline is expected.
“This department is really short of resources,” said Police Chief LeRonne Armstrong, a passionate advocate of more officials, in a recent interview with Bay City News. “We have to address the loss of life in this city.”

Barry Donelan, president of the Oakland Police Officers’ Association, the union that represents officials in Oakland, said the department had so few resources that it could only sort calls.

In response to this situation, city officials are recruiting more officials.

In September, Oakland City Council voted to create an additional police academy, and in early December the council added two more – bringing the total number of academies planned for the next two years to seven. And City Council President Pro Tem Sheng Thao, a candidate for mayoral, has proposed a $ 50,000 hiring bonus for senior officials coming to Oakland for work.

Ultimately, Armstrong believes that a city the size of Oakland would need 1,100 to 1,200 sworn officers. Oakland has 440,000 residents, or about half that of San Francisco, and San Francisco has about 2,000 sworn officers. By mid-September, San Francisco had fewer than half the murders in Oakland.

CONTINUE READING: UPDATE: Driver seriously injured in shooting on Interstate 680 in Danville

But despite the move to strengthen the police force, the debate about their size and role is far from over.

Although police department data suggests a decrease in shootings is related to greater police force, experts studying these trends warn that many elements play a role in increasing or decreasing crime.

Whether more officials will lead to a reduction in violent crime is not an easy question, according to Cory Lepage, professor at the Institute of Criminology at California State University East Bay. Lepage said that “intervening variables” influence the level of violent crime. Such variables can be anything from population shifts and economic fluctuations to police guidelines and unexpected events like the COVID-19 pandemic.

For the anti-police-terror project, more police force is still not the solution.

“Perhaps the solution (to Oakland crime) lies in affordable housing, violence prevention, mental health services, and less in the Oakland Police Department (OPD),” the group wrote in a Twitter post last month.

And for others, policing only works when it’s combined with other efforts.

“Reducing violence takes many different approaches,” said Guillermo Cespedes, director of violence prevention in Oakland and national expert.

Oakland cannot stop or prevent its way out, Cespedes said.

“You need a balanced approach that includes both.”

Many Californians are saying goodbye to the Bay Area: between March 2020 and September 2021, the number of newcomers to the Bay Area fell by 45%, and the number of graduates rose, according to a new report from the University of. by 21% California. High housing costs may play a role: The average home value in San Francisco is now over $ 1.5 million, according to Zillow, and the cost of living, which is measured by prices for transportation, groceries, utilities, taxes, and childcare costs, is included 169% higher than the national average for the United States. According to Sperling’s Best Places. No doubt Bay Area residents will miss many things in San Fran, including culture (the Bay Area has over 40 museums), quality food (4,400+ restaurants, including 50 with at least one Michelin star), and plenty of jobs, in particular in the technical area. But these cities, where you can all buy a home for $ 550,000 or less – added bonus, mortgage rates stay near historic lows – have some of these advantages at a much cheaper price.

Recently named “Surge City” by Inc. Magazine, Boise says Boise is well on its way to becoming the next Silicon Valley. The city has a lot to offer in terms of both career opportunities and outdoor amenities. If you love the natural beauty of the Bay Area, you’ll love Boise, which includes the Boise River Greenbelt, a 40 mile trail of hiking trails and parks that runs through the center of town. Boise is also in close proximity to a variety of waterfalls, hot springs, and hiking trails, including the one that leads to Table Rock, a plateau overlooking the Red Desert Basin. Real estate is about 1/3 the price in Boise compared to San Francisco, and overall the cost of living is lower, despite being busy, good food, and access to culture, including exhibits at the Boise Art Museum. One downside is that Boise residents are tied to land (unlike the Bay Area, which has access to the Pacific Ocean).

Typical home value: 519,081
Cost of Living: 3.6% higher than the US average
The typical house values are from Zillow and shift from month to month. The cost of living comes from Sperling’s Best Places.

Home to Brown University and the Rhode Island School of Design, plus six other colleges, Providence has a lot to offer if you crave culture. See exhibits at the RISD Museum, take a gondola down the Providence River that runs through the city center, or sign up for a guest lecture at one of the universities. The city, which is also home to Johnson & Wales University, the largest culinary school in the world, has a varied and impressive dining scene with over 100 restaurants that source food from the nearby sea and the countless small farms in the area. College Hill, a steep climb that leads to Brown University, will remind you of San Francisco’s many slopes. If you’re missing a big city, make a quick trip to Boston for all kinds of entertainment or take the train down to New York. However, the city, which remains surprisingly affordable for the northeast coast, is getting a C- from Niche for its public schools.

San Francisco ranked sixth in the Trust for Public Land’s annual ParkScore ranking, which measures access to public parks for residents in cities. Minneapolis took third place thanks to the fact that 98% of the population live within 10 minutes’ walk of a park. That’s not all that makes the city unique. In 2020, eight of the city’s chefs and three of its restaurants were named 2020 semi-finalists at the James Beard Foundation Awards. So if you love good food, Minneapolis has plenty to offer. The city is also home to a number of Fortune 500 companies, including Target, United Healthcare, Best Buy, 3M, and General Mills. It houses the Walker Art Center, a world-class contemporary art museum, as well as countless performance rooms, including the Guthrie Theater. The public schools are good, the housing is affordable, and the prices are only 6.5% above the US average. The disadvantage?
The city of San Francisco says the number of suicidal children has hit record highs as public schools remain closed due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Last week the city had an unprecedented one step and sued its own school district over the ongoing closings that have kept San Francisco’s more than 54,000 public school students out of the classroom since March 2020.

Our country is in a historic battle against the coronavirus. Add Changing America to yours. added Facebook or Twitter Feed to keep up to date.

City Attorney Dennis Herrera argued in the lawsuit that the reopening is safe and that the San Francisco Unified School District is hurting the mental health of students by keeping the facilities closed. The lawsuit also states that school officials are not yet required to come up with a detailed plan for the statutory reopening.

In a motion filed Thursday in the San Francisco Superior Court, Herrera provided testimony from hospitals and parents about the psychological effects of the closings on children The Associated Press (AP).

The lawsuit alleges that UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital saw a 66 percent increase in the number of suicidal children attending emergency rooms and a 75 percent increase in children hospitalized for mental health problems, AP reports . The UCSF Children’s Emergency Department in Mission Bay also saw a record number of suicidal children last month, according to legal records.

The city also quotes statements from parents. One mother said her 15-year-old daughter often cried in the middle of the day in frustration, and she recently found her “curled up in a fetal position and crying next to her laptop at 11 a.m.,” according to the AP.

Another parent said their 7-year-old son had “uncontrollable meltdowns” and their 10-year-old daughter had “depression and anger”. She said she believed her daughter’s mental health would continue to suffer until schools reopen.

Schools in San Francisco have been allowed to reopen by law since September. However, the teacher unions have announced that they will not return to face-to-face learning until they are vaccinated, and the district has yet to finalize a deal to reopen.

“We wholeheartedly agree that in-person learning serves students better,” Laura Dudnick, the school district spokeswoman, told AP. “We want the city to provide vaccines to our employees.”

On Friday, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) released guidelines on safely reopening schools, stating that while COVID-19 vaccination should be a priority for teachers, it is not viewed as a condition for classroom reopening should be.

The agency’s recommendations focus on the wearing of universal masks by students, staff and teachers, as well as social distancing. The CDC said schools can customize whether they offer full face-to-face tuition or hybrid learning based on their level of community penetration.

“Science has shown that schools can be safely reopened before all teachers are vaccinated,” said CDC director Rochelle Walensky on Friday.

What he found The video is from 10 weeks before the little Cash died of stab wounds on the floor. But it shows the teen accused of kidnapping him, Darriynn Brown, walking down the street, opening Alvarado’s back gate and peering in before quickly walking away. “It’s really scary,” Alvarado told The Daily Beast. “I have two kids, a girl and a boy, and they play basketball in the backyard.” Alvarado’s house shares a back alley with the home of Monica Sherrod, 35, who looked after Cash and his twin Carter. She said she was with the twins’ father, Trevor Gernon, a 31-year-old construction worker, until he reportedly left town in March when a court ordered him to go to rehab for the next two months – without the knowledge of her mother, Melinda Seagroves, who lives in Houston. Early on the morning of May 15, a young man sneaked into the twins’ bedroom, got some sleeping money from the toddler bed he shared with Carter and went out – a terrifying scene captured by a baby monitor in grainy black and white. Footage obtained from the Daily Mail shows the intruder returning about two hours later and hovering over the bed where Carter slept before leaving abruptly as if scared by something. By then, Cash was dead. Antainain Square, a Dallas teacher who lives in the area, was out on her morning walk around 6:45 am when she saw tufts of hair on the floor. The thought belonged to a dog. “I spoke to my mother on the phone.” Square told The Daily Beast. “As I got closer I could see an arm and a foot and I just started crying and said, ‘Mom, I think I’m coming on a body. ‘And I started:’ Mom, it’s a kid! It is a child! ‘And the baby had blood all over her face. At that point my mom told me to hang up with her and call 911 right away … The baby had ants on its feet. So I knew pretty well that he was gone. “4 year old Slain’s father in Dallas apologizes for leaving KidsSquare. She remembers that she was “in denial” and hoped that Cash was actually just asleep, even though he was obviously dead. “I was just trying to put all kinds of stories together. I had no way of believing anyone would do this to a child, “she said, adding that she stayed with Cash’s body until the police and paramedics arrived so no one would drive over him.” A couple who left out of their garage I had to stop her to let her know this baby was on the floor, ”Square said. More than three hours later, Sherrod reported that Cash was missing. “I got up late the day he went missing and thought it was weird,” Sherrod later told the Daily Mail. “I said, ‘It’s already ten o’clock, guys.’ So I thought Cash was still in bed. ”Cash Gernon was kidnapped from his bed on May 15. Handout Later that day, police arrested 18-year-old Brown, who lives with his parents about half a mile from the spot , on Cash’s body, was found on charges of kidnapping and burglary, but not murder, because police said they were awaiting forensic tests, and instead of bailing him for $ 1.5 million, Brown couldn’t for comment and has no lawyer on court records. His mother, Mimi, has told reporters she believes her son is being framed. A jumble of relationships, criminal records, and an unknown motive hangs over the case. Sherrod, who Mother of several children, has a criminal record that includes assault and DWI.Trevor Gernon, who has an extensive rap sheet, appears to have disappeared; a phone number listed under his name w got separated. Darriynn Brown is reportedly a friend of one of Sherrod’s children and has been seen playing with children in Sherrod’s care. Sherrod first characterized any relationship she or her children had with Brown, who attended the same high school as at least one of the child boys who live in her home, as minimal. She later told a reporter that Brown had visited her house two days before Cash’s murder but was not shopping at the time. According to several neighbors, Brown was definitely not a stranger to the neighborhood. One told The Daily Beast that the teenager regularly played soccer and basketball with some of the children who lived with Sherrod. Others said they saw Brown on their ring surveillance cameras hanging around the area. Little information is known about Seagroves, who now has custody of Carter. Seagroves didn’t respond to multiple interview requests, but her mother, Connie Ward, told The Daily Beast this week, “We’re not ready to make any statement. My family is broken. It was a nightmare to hear and see the news about our baby and tell stories that are wrong. “Seagroves does not appear to have had a violation of the law, but court records show that both Sherrod and Gernon have records that include assault arrests. In 2013, Sherrod pleaded guilty to assaulting her mother, Lezlee Pinkerton. According to an affidavit signed by Officer Glenn Burkheimer-Lubeck of the Harris County Constable’s Office, Sherrod deliberately hit Pinkerton with his hand in the head and chest and pulled her to the ground, then, “Cause[d] Assault “to Pinkerton” by stamping [Pinkerton’s] Toes with your feet. “” The complainant reports that she believes her toes are broken, “the affidavit reads. Sherrod was sentenced to two years of community supervision, participation in a domestic violence treatment program, a $ 100 donation to a family violence center, and a $ 200 fine. In 2018, Gernon was arrested by the Harris County Sheriff’s Office for attacking his father, Roger Gernon, during a dispute over a credit card bill, Texas court records show. When Roger Gernon told his son he was going to call the police, Trevor took the phone away, bled his father’s arm with his fingernails, and poked him in the chest with his elbow. He was charged with assault and disrupting an 911 call, pleaded guilty and was sentenced to 68 days in prison. In addition to attacking family members, both Sherrod and Gernon have histories of theft, fraud, and drug possession. Sherrod’s last arrest was for DWI; She also pleaded guilty to identity fraud, meth possession, driving without a license, and theft of misdemeanors. Geron’s most recent arrest was for possession of narcotics in 2020. He was previously charged with possession of methamphetamine in 2016. His rap sheet features Neal Flanagan, co-owner of an anti-corrosion company, told The Daily Beast that he met Gernon in high school and reconnected in 2016. He gave Gernon some work because he was having problems. Then it went sideways. “My ex-wife and I were married at the time,” Flanagan said. “We had problems. She broke up with me in January 2017. Then she and Trevor started seeing each other. “I never saw him after that,” Flanagan said. “A few years later, he wrote to me on Facebook. Like, ‘hey buddy. How you been?’ As if nothing ever happened. “When he was sober, Gernon was’ as good as anyone could want,” said Neal’s father, Johnny Flanagan. But he added that he wasn’t surprised that Gernon took off without his boys. ” He’s one of those guys that way goes the way the wind is blowing, you know, and he’s going to do good for several months and then do bad for several months, and you know, just get up and go, ” said Flanagan. Following his drug abuse charge last November, he failed to appear for a March 29, 2021 hearing, forfeiting a $ 10,000 bond payment. There is now an open arrest warrant against him. His sister posted a YouTube video that recorded an apology from him. In it, he says he left town looking for work and didn’t want to disturb the boys’ routine, so he left them behind. “I paid the ultimate and most painful price for my poor judgment and I have to live with this devastation every day,” he said. “I will never forgive myself. If I could, I would go back and do everything differently. This is a nightmare that won’t go away when I open my eyes in the morning. We just don’t understand how this can happen to such a bright and happy child. “None of the various defense attorneys who have represented Sherrod or Gernon in court have agreed to speak on the basis of the privilege of attorney and client. Cash’s death raised many questions for those responsible for it. But in the neighborhood where he spent his final months, the overarching mystery is why anyone should kill a defenseless child and leave it on the street like trash. Steven Monacelli The solid part of the working class Mountain Creek in Dallas is a quiet place bounded on one side by the 600-acre Cedar Ridge Conservation Area. The houses are in fair condition and the courtyards are clean. On the street where Cash’s body was found, locals stopped at a shrine to leave toys, flowers and other memorabilia. The woman who found Cash’s body has been struggling with her emotions since that morning. “It was difficult. It was really difficult, “Square told The Daily Beast.” I’m 3 years old and as we look at this and process this, I am learning that I have little triggers. If I see a little boy, 4, 3, 5, I’ll cry. It’s just a trigger for me. My own daughter is like a trigger. Sometimes she says something and I cry. “Even though I didn’t know the baby, he was simply robbed of his life. It was really hard. It was really hard to just process this. And no matter how hard you try to keep going, you can’t miss what you saw. “Rohrlich reported from New York and Monacelli from Dallas. Read more at The Daily Beast. Do you have a tip?
SACRAMENTO, California (KTXL) – It’s no secret that during the pandemic, many people decided to change the scene and no more people have moved in any metropolitan area in the country than Sacramento.

According to a new report from CBRE, a real estate services company, the number of people who moved from San Francisco to Sacramento County in 2020 increased by 70% as of 2019.

Elected Officials, California Renters Hosting the Leave No Renter Behind Webinar

The data also provides clues as to which parts of the Sacramento population are most active.

Figures collected by CBRE from the United States Postal Service show that the part of the city with the highest departure rate in Sacramento is downtown, where around 1,000 more people moved out in 2020 than the area.

“In the Sacramento area, individuals were increasingly leaving the urban core,” said Eric Willett, CBRE’s director of research. “The people who live in dense urban areas, often in rental apartments, have left for the suburbs in greater numbers than in previous years.”

One of those suburbs that are seeing an increase is the Roseville area.

Real estate agent Carrie Monroe said she urged people who are considering going there to do so sooner rather than later. Not just for their benefit, but also for theirs.

“I think now is the time to take the step,” she said. “If we wait later in the year, we will have higher interest rates and prices will be even higher.”

A record number of Americans are still trying to get away from expensive subway areas even as restrictions continue to ease across the country, according to real estate agent Redfin.

Around 31.2% of Redfin users searched various subway areas nationwide in January and February, up from around 26.1% over the same period in 2020, according to a recent report from the broker.

Although the number of users looking to move has increased steadily in the nation since the pandemic, the past two months have set a new record.

In fact, 31.2% is the highest percentage of users looking to move since 2017 when Redfin started tracking the migration.

RECORD NUMBER OF HOUSES SOLD ABOVE LIST PRICE IN US ON THE STRONG SELLER MARKET

According to Redfin, this growth may be due to working from home, which allows the majority of shoppers to effectively prioritize factors like affordability and living close to family and friends rather than being closer to their office.

The majority of users wanted to escape from expensive subway areas such as New York, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Washington, DC, and Seattle. However, January and February had the largest net outflows in these areas. This is a measure of how many Redfin.com house hunters wanted to get off a subway before moving in.

In particular, the net outflow of users from New York, San Francisco and Los Angeles has “increased significantly” compared to the previous year, according to the report.

Meanwhile, Redfin data shows that net outflow in Washington, DC and Seattle has more than doubled.

Instead of paying the bill for these traditionally expensive locations, users are looking for cheaper housing options nearby.

The majority of users wanted to flee expensive subway areas like Washington, DC and San Francisco, according to Redfin. (iStock)

Philadelphia became the most popular travel destination for people getting off the New York subway, according to the report. In February, Philadelphia sold an average of $ 238,000, compared to $ 590,000 on the New York subway.

Likewise, people who wanted to leave San Francisco kept an eye on the house near Sacramento. The typical Sacramento home sold for $ 490,000 in February. Los Angeles residents, on the other hand, had their eye on San Diego, where the typical home sold for $ 685,000.

The number has increased as vaccines have been rolled out across the county and local governments begin easing restrictions and reopening the economy.

Redfin chief economist Daryl Fairweather said this suggests “the surge in moving from one part of the country to another is likely to outlast the pandemic”.

For some, the move may be temporary as the offices are reopening to some extent or living alone and not with their family again, according to Fairweather.

“For many Americans, a lasting impact of the pandemic and remote working is the freedom to live where they want to live,” he said.

SAN FRANCISCO (CBS SF) – The numbers are staggering and San Francisco residents are now sounding the alarm over the rising number of brazen break-ins in the city.

A recent example is a video posted on Nextdoor given to KPIX 5 by a homeowner in the Cow Hollow neighborhood. It shows a man attempting to break into a house at 1:52 am on August 22nd, shattering a sense of security.

CONTINUE READING: Amber Alert: Oakland Police are looking for a kidnapped 2 year old boy

The homeowner didn’t want his identity to be revealed, but others say these attempted break-ins were widespread.

“Our neighbor was broken into and had had another break-in a month earlier,” said Ginny Fang, who lives in the North Beach neighborhood of San Francisco.

A spokesman for the San Francisco Police Department said they have received more reports of garage break-ins lately.

“We are doing everything we can to increase patrols and ultimately arrest those who commit these crimes,” said SFPD officer Robert Rueca.

CONTINUE READING: Fire Sweeps Through Home in South San Jose; 1 person badly burned, dog killed

Fang said thieves stole four of her family’s bicycles by breaking them and walking in a few weeks ago.

“You’re taking a walk around the neighborhood and you see so many holes just punched in garages and wires, the same wire we hooked up with. You see them lying around in the street,” said Fang.

Another victim, whose home was broken into in late August, posted a photo to KPIX 5 after gathering information about more than 50 incidents from other neighbors.

In San Francisco, burglaries were up 42% in the first nine months of this year compared to the same period in 2019. In the northern district, which includes Pacific Heights, Marina, North Beach and Cow Hollow, the figure is 59%. 79% in Mission and 50% in Richmond.

“It’s so hard, the destabilizing feeling, and so much is already happening in the world and even the basic sanctity of your home,” said Fang.
