For movie theater owners around the country, the same-day release of “Barbie” and “Oppenheimer” this summer meant record box office sales and a gratifying sign that the public still craved entertainment on the big screen.

But for some employees at the Alamo Drafthouse in Manhattan, “Barbenheimer” was the breaking point.

“That really pushed us to the edge,” says Maggie Quick, a guest attendant. “It was just the constant understaffing and the emotional exhaustion.”

“People were waiting longer than usual for their food and that makes them short-tempered and impatient,” recalls Tyler Trautman, a shift leader. “We’re the ones facing customers. It takes a toll, a mental toll, to be yelled at by guests because their drink has been taking an hour.”

Quick and Trautman were among dozens at the Manhattan theater who decided it was time to form a union. Alamo employees worked with United Auto Workers Local 2179 and this week voted to unionize, with nearly two-thirds in favor. They join Alamo employees at the Brooklyn theater, who voted last month to become part of Local 2179.

“We’re very excited to be moving forward in solidarity with Brooklyn,” Quick said after the vote was announced. “We have strength in our numbers and hope to see some real change.”

An Alamo spokesperson said the company would decline comment.

At a time of labor action in the movie industry and beyond, union activity is expanding at movie theaters themselves, a trend which began during the pandemic. Over the past two years, employees have formed or attempted to form unions at the Film Forum and Anthology Film Archives in New York, the Amherst Cinema in Massachusetts and Alamo Drafthouses in San Francisco and Austin, Texas, home to Alamo’s company headquarters.

The transition to a union shop went smoothly at some theaters. The owners in Amherst voluntarily agreed to recognize the union and a contract was reached earlier this year. Film Forum workers, who unionized in 2022, agreed last summer to a 5-year contract that raises salaries by an average of 12%. Anthology Film Archives employees went on strike for a day last year, but have since agreed to terms.

“Overall, it’s been fairly peaceful,” says Olga Brudastova, president of UAW Local 2110, which represents the Film Forum and Anthology Film Archives unions. In a statement, Chad Bolton, the Film Forum general manager, said the contract was born from “a thorough and thoughtful process.”

But at Alamo Drafthouse, the chain known for its eclectic offerings of films and in-theater food and drink service, employees speak of ongoing resistance from the company. According to images and audio recordings obtained by The Associated Press, Alamo management in New York has posted flyers urging workers not to unionize and brought in speakers from Texas, including Alamo co-founder Tim League.

“We appreciate everything you do for our venue and believe we can work better together to solve problems without the need of a third-party like a union to come between us and charge you dues,” one flyer reads.

Alamo held meetings in Manhattan and Brooklyn in the weeks leading up to union votes. In each gathering, management officials acknowledged discontent among staff members, while reiterating that any issues were better worked out entirely within the company.

In Brooklyn, per the recordings, League reflected on the company’s history, dating back to its origins in the 1990s. He spoke of his dedication to Alamo and of his own progressive affinities, including his “passionate” support for Sen. Bernie Sanders of Vermont. Both League and his wife and Alamo co-founder Karrie League have contributed to various Democratic Party candidates. Tim League has publicly praised the pro-labor senator’s 2016 presidential run, telling a CNBC interviewer in 2016 that “Bernie is going to be good for America.”

League emphasized that he “understood” why Hollywood actors and writers were striking, and why auto workers went on strike. But for Alamo, he said, unions would be a step back, a “communication block.”

“I fully recognize my own personal bias here,” he said. “I don’t think that forming a union is the right solution for Alamo, that is my personal opinion. I’m concerned that a union is going to drive a wedge between us.”

Only 6% of private U.S. sector workers belong to unions today, a fraction of the 35% represented in the 1950s. But more workers in numerous industries have begun organizing lately and their actions have public support. According to Gallup, approval of stronger unions stands at 67%, down slightly from the 71% approval seen last year, but mirroring levels last seen in the 1960s. A recent AP-NORC poll found that a majority of U.S. adults sympathized with the striking Hollywood workers.

The Leagues were recent graduates of Rice University when in 1997 they opened the first Alamo, a single-screen venue in Austin. They soon established a word-of-mouth following among movie lovers and within the next few years had opened several other locations around Texas. In 2005, Entertainment Weekly named Alamo Drafthouse the country’s best cinema venue, calling the experience “movie geek heaven.”

The company now has dozens of theaters around the U.S., but endured financial struggles during the pandemic. In March 2021, the company filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy, closed some locations and cancelled plans to open new ones. Alamo emerged from bankruptcy at the end of May 2021, under the ownership of League. Altamont Capital Partners and Fortress Investment Group. Michael Kusterman, a former executive at Caveman Foods, has been Alamo CEO since replacing the retiring Shelli Taylor in July.

League, who in 2020 became executive chairman of Alamo, said in the recordings he was “disappointed” Brooklyn workers wanted to unionize, while adding that the company couldn’t meet his high standards for Alamo without a happy staff. He acknowledged past errors, including a “troubling lack of communication,” but said that Alamo was committed to moving forward. He asked the staff to give the management team a year to prove itself.

“I hear you and I’ll keep on listening,” he said. “Like I said, I built this company to be the best damn cinema that has ever, or will ever exist. And it’s an aspirational goal. It’ll never be complete. I personally feel strongly that inserting a union between you and me and the team hinders that goal. So that’s why even after all the work, the hard work that’s been done to get to this point, I ask you to vote ‘no’ in forming a union.”

Within days, Brooklyn employees voted to unionize, by a margin of more than 2-to-1.

“For years the workers of Brooklyn Alamo have tried to solve problems through dialogue with management, to no avail,” the union statement read in part. “Now Alamo Drafthouse must meet us at the bargaining table.”

Fortunately for Bill Graham, flames from the November fire that swept through 7609 Raytown Road didn’t reach the 6,500-square-foot space he leases on the west side of the building. A little smoke damage is all Graham Plumbing Supply has suffered.

But it took several months to get power back after the fire, and the whole ordeal has caused 71-year-old Graham to think a little more deeply about retirement lately.

“I’m looking for a successor,” Graham said recently, leaning back in a low chair behind the store’s long wooden counter.

Graham is Kansas City’s go-to source for antique toilets, pedestal sinks, and the thousands of obscure (in some cases obsolete) repair parts that help funnel water in and out of these fixtures. He’s the guy plumbers could call when they need a specific brass valve for a 100-year-old sink. He’s something homeowners could call upon when remodeling a bathroom and want a toilet with a little vintage character.

“I would say I’m probably the only company in town that has the parts, inventory and knowledge that I have,” Graham said. “At least I don’t know any others.”

Two men have owned Graham Plumbing Supply for the nine decades the company has been in business. Graham’s father, LA, founded the company in 1932 and ran it for the next 50 years. Graham bought it in LA and has been at the helm ever since.

Graham Plumbing Supply has always sold spare parts but used to specialize in general plumbing repairs including boiler and water heater maintenance. Back then it was based in Midtown. From 1940 to 1980, LA owned a 20,000 square foot lot at 3122 Main St.

“Then the city gave Wendy’s Hamburgers the right to the property,” Graham said. “We ended up at 3833 Broadway. That was in 1980. I ransomed my father in 1982. Then, in 1999, comes Walgreens.”

The pharmacy chain wanted half a lot on the corner of 39th Street and Broadway Boulevard. Graham eventually sold out. (Like Wendy’s on Main, Walgreens is still in that location today.) He packed up his antique toilet bowls and gas caps, along with his brass pipes and old galvanized fixtures, and took it all to Raytown Road.

Graham reviews some notes while helping a client. His plumbing supply business moved to Raytown from Midtown Kansas City in 1999.

In Raytown, progress was slow at first. Downtown has had steady business from property management companies who needed hard-to-find parts for the maintenance of all the old homes in the area. Raytown wasn’t quite that old-fashioned in that regard. “Also, they immediately tore down our old building and no one knew how to find us,” Graham said.

Then, around 2001, Graham made a smart move. He bought a 1-800 number from Westburne, a large nationwide plumbing supplies distributor that was going out of the parts business.

“They had vendors across the country selling this catalog called Star Plumbing and Maintenance Parts,” Graham said. “I asked to buy the number and they said yes. There was no copyright on it.”

Soon customers were calling Graham Plumbing Supplies, thinking it was the line for Star.

“We told them Star was out of business, but we probably had what they were looking for — faucet parts or cabinet screws or something,” Graham said. “What we did. At that time, however, we also started to buy more in bulk. So this was a whole new game for us.”

Graham said he still has several hundred customers across the country calling and placing orders based on that old catalog: large plumbing companies, general contractors, local governments. If he doesn’t have the part, he will order it.

Nowadays, Graham is more interested in the ancient side of his business. He loves to buy things, fix them and sell them.

Graham owns a couple of vintage toilets that say “Kansas City, Mo.” They are stamped to indicate that they were made in the greater metropolitan area.

“Come back this way,” Graham said. He rounded the corner to a cluttered back closet and pulled a small box from a shelf. Inside was a shiny faucet.

“This is a Chicago Faucet, one of the finest faucets ever made,” he said. “I had it re-chromed and put in new parts – state-of-the-art quarter-turn ceramic cartridges. This would fit in an antique pedestal sink, that’s where I’ll put it.”

Sometimes plumbers come to Graham with discarded pre-war toilets that they can’t stand being towed to the landfill. He once bought 83 Kohler toilets from a St. Louis hotel, all from 1930, which came with their original fittings. He has two left: a purple one and a yellow one.

Graham’s showroom floor, if you can call it that, is a sea of ​​dozens of white and pastel colored sinks and toilet bowls that sit on the carpet with no price tags. “If it was my toilet, I’d put new guts in it,” Graham said. “I just completed a toilet this morning roughly the same year as your vintage and I installed a Fluidmaster flush valve and a Fluidmaster fill valve. You can’t beat these Fluidmasters. They eliminate the need for your rod and float ball. They are easy to insert and replace, and cost $12.”

The old man wasn’t ready to make that decision. He said he would think about it and come back. He went.

“I would say I’m probably the only company in town that has the parts, inventory and knowledge that I have,” Graham said. “At least I don’t know any others.”

Graham returned to the subject of his retirement. He and his wife would love to spend more time with their three children and one grandson, and he wouldn’t mind spending a little more time golfing and fishing. But first he needs someone to do his one-man business for him.

“I think people see all this, and maybe it puts them off,” Graham said, gesturing vaguely at the mountain of inventory surrounding him. “It’s true that few people have the expertise I have. But damn, I’m ready to train. And I’m not asking a ton of money for it.” He reckons $100,000 should seal the deal.

“I don’t know when my number will be available,” Graham continued. “Something happens to me, there’s probably going to be an auction of all this stuff and that’s it.”

He shook his head and seemed to think about it for a moment. A large industrial fan gave out a steady roar. Country music was playing softly on an old radio behind the counter. A customer came in. Graham stood up.

“Hello,” he said.

In the notoriously expensive Bay Area housing market, things got even more pricey during the pandemic.

Now, four Bay Area cities have landed on the list of metro areas with the biggest gap between list and sale prices.

According to an analysis from Better Mortgage, an online lender and homeownership platform, San Francisco, San Jose, Oakland and San Rafael have some of the highest average ratios between the list price and the sale price of each home sold. The company looked at Nov 2021 housing data from real estate listings website Redfin, the most recently available figures.

Cities with ratios over 100% represent areas where homes sold for over their list prices. The bigger the number, the greater the gap between the house’s listing and sale prices.

“This isn’t the least bit surprising,” wrote Khadeejah Johnson, head of brokerage for Better Mortgage, in an email. “The Bay Area is home to some of the most competitive housing markets in the country, driven by historically low inventory levels and supply chain issues causing new construction delays and higher costs.”

Johnson said there’s scarcity in the Bay Area, especially in San Francisco and San Jose, where “buyers are competing so fiercely that sales prices are far surpassing listing prices.”

San Francisco came in second on the list, with an average sale-to-list ratio of 108.3% and 70.8% of homes sold over asking price. The median sale price was $1,575 million. The Better Mortgage article explains that the city’s “extremely low housing inventory” stayed tight because when interest rates dropped, “savvy buyers capitalized on the cheaper loans by purchasing real estate in this city.”

San Jose was third on the list, with an average sale-to-list ratio of 107.5%, with 75.8% of homes sold about the list price and a median sale price of $1.4 million. The article explains that a lack of new construction and buyers capitalizing on record low interest rates have led to bidding wars and purchase prices to rise.

Oakland followed very closely behind with an average sale-to-list ratio of 107.3% and 76.7% of homes selling above asking price. The median sale price was unavailable. Better’s article points again to not enough inventory: Oakland’s population grew by 13% in the past decade, but new housing grew by only 5.16%, according to the report.

In eighth place, San Rafael’s average sale-to-list ratio was 104.6%, with 56.4% of homes sold above the asking price and a median home sale price of $1,325 million.

Johnson said the pandemic increased remote and hybrid work models, and low interest rates allowed more people to move out from city centers.

“Not everyone opted to move to Idaho, Colorado, Arizona or Florida,” she said. “Many homebuyers bought in the metro areas surrounding their home markets, such is the case in the Bay Area. The markets there have gotten so competitive over the last couple of years that homebuilders in the Bay Area haven’t been able to keep pace.”

Supply chain issues drove up prices higher, and many home buyers have scrambled to purchase homes while interest rates are still low, Johnson explained, which in turn has driven up the average purchase loan size. And, she said there have been even more second-home buyers on the market, adding to the scarcity.

Just outside the Bay Area, Santa Cruz also landed on the list at number 10, with an average sale-to-list ratio of 103.8%, with 62.5% of homes sold over the asking price, and a median sale price of $1.05 million

Johnson does not think the Bay Area housing market will cool anytime soon.

“Home builders are trying to catch up on a backlog of homes that won’t come close to meeting demand,” she said. “All the while, interest rates will continue to rise over the next couple of years, but homebuyers in the Bay Area will happily pay cash or the higher mortgage payments each month if it means landing the dream home they’ve been waiting years for.

In other words, demand will outstrip supply for the foreseeable future, she explained.

So what should prospective home buyers do in this wildly competitive market? Johnson said it really depends on a person’s financial situation. If someone is able to make a bigger offer to compete against other bids, then paying well over asking price might be the best course of action.

“You never want to try and time the market, so waiting on the sidelines isn’t always the best option either,” she said.

If paying over asking isn’t an option, Johnson recommends “making concessions in your search if you’re really determined to buy sooner than later.” She also said to be flexible with the size and location of a home if you plan to stay for fewer than five to seven years. And if you’re looking for the long-term, “make a higher offer if you can afford to or use a cash offer program.”

But currently the shelves are partially empty, deliveries are delayed and prices are rising. Bottlenecks in many steps keep products out of the hands of the consumer. It is unclear when the supply chain will normalize again. And the economy pays the price.

Any company’s supply chain can begin with suppliers of raw materials and other inputs. As soon as a product is manufactured, it travels along the network from the factory via a warehouse to a store and finally to the end customer. Various agents, brokers, sellers, transportation companies, and distribution centers can play a key role in ensuring that a product is manufactured and reaches its final destination.

The supply chain is not working as it should, thanks to a host of issues exacerbated by the global COVID pandemic. In the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach, cargo ships with around half a million containers full of goods from various countries in Asia are waiting to be unloaded. After unloading, a lack of truck drivers prevents these containers from leaving the ports on time. Rail terminals, to which trucks deliver goods for the next stage of the journey, are supplemented with containers for onward transport, which in turn also block arriving trains. Should these goods somehow make it to a warehouse, the labor shortage will limit their timely processing.

And these are just some of the problems.

A global shortage of microchips, exacerbated by winter storms in Texas that affected domestic production, is slowing the production of automobiles and various electronic devices. China, where many consumer goods destined for America are manufactured, is suffering from an ongoing energy crisis that is limiting production. And manufacturers in many other countries with lower vaccination rates have suffered standstills and labor shortages due to the spread of the Delta variant.
