While renaming Twitter to X would effectively mark the end of an era for the app, this would be a physical manifestation of the same.

According to X owner Elon Musk, the company now plans to move out of San Francisco in protest against changes to California law with which he disagrees.

Yesterday, Governor of California Gavin Newsom signed a law prohibiting school districts from notifying parents if their child uses different pronouns or identifies as a different gender than that indicated on their school report card. The change is intended to protect LGBTQ+ youth by countering “forced outing,” but many believe the change harms families by withholding such information from parents.

And Musk, who has had personal experience in this area with his own children, is anything but happy with the update.

In response to the announced change, Musk stated that this was “the straw that broke the camel’s back”:

“Because of this and many other laws before it that targeted both families and businesses, SpaceX will now move its headquarters from Hawthorne, California, to Starbase, Texas. And X The headquarters will be moved to Austin.”

Musk says he warned Newsom about the potential impact of such a change and also mentioned problems with gangs and “violent drug addicts” in the streets surrounding the X building that contributed to his decision.

This alone is a landmark and was for a long time the heart of the global Twitter empire.

Almost immediately after taking over the company, Musk made changes to the building: he reworked the Twitter sign, renamed conference rooms and offices, consolidated teams into smaller groups, cleared out large parts of the facility, and finally, after renaming the company, sold numerous Twitter artifacts.

Musk also had a temporary X erected on the roof of the building, but it had to be removed after complaints.

In fact, Musk's move of X's headquarters to Austin is just an extension of his ongoing efforts to transform the company formerly known as Twitter into a separate creation that will likely function better in closer proximity to Tesla's headquarters.

Still, if it happens, it would be a major upheaval, as a major technology company moves out of San Francisco and potentially loses many of its technical talent.

I mean, this really isn't a surprise. Musk has been threatening to move the company out of San Francisco all along, and it's also worth noting that he has actually done nothing on that front so far.

And maybe the additional costs and complications of an office move are still prohibitive at this point. But the desire is there, and Musk wants to drive X out of Silicon Valley, as he wants to start his own tech hub in Texas instead.

In some ways, this would mark the end of an era. But in reality, that era is long over. X is not Twitter, and what the app once was is very different from what it is today.

A physical move to Texas would also be a symbolic redesign of the new state of X.

San Francisco's exasperated mayor said the time for compassion is over as she announced plans to tackle the city's homelessness crisis that has residents fearful for their safety.

Mayor London Breed announced that the city will take a “very aggressive” approach to removing the encampments from the streets that have blighted the City by the Bay for the past four years.

In certain parts of the city, including the troubled Tenderloin district, there is now so much misery and neglect that local businesses can no longer find staff and residents are forced to flee.

The increase in the number of homeless people, which currently stands at around 8,300, has brought with it a host of other related problems: the sidewalks are full of illegal drug dealers, fentanyl users, and violent and intimidating behavior is common near the tent camps.

San Francisco Mayor London Breed said the time for compassion is over when it comes to dealing with the city's homeless crisis, which has led to streets being littered with feces. Homeless people are considered part of the city's struggle with fentanyl problems in San Francisco.

“We have had to evolve from a compassionate city to a responsible city, and I have led the effort to ensure that we approach this issue differently than we have in the past,” Breed said Thursday in a shift in course on the issue.

“We will be very aggressive and forceful in moving the camps, which may even result in criminal consequences,” she said. The “clean-ups” are expected to begin in less than two weeks, once staff have been trained according to the new legal guidelines.

Her comments come just three weeks after the Supreme Court gave cities the authority to evict homeless people from encampments.

“Building more housing won't solve the problem,” Breed said. “Thank God for the Supreme Court decision.”

In December 2022, a federal judge banned the city of San Francisco from clearing homeless tents, even though clearing encampments was not prohibited.

The judge ruled that city officials could no longer evict homeless people from public campsites unless they were offered adequate indoor accommodation.

Click here to resize this module

The city will take a more “aggressive” approach to removing tents and homeless encampments from the streets. San Francisco plans to clear several known homeless encampments starting in August.

Officers were also prohibited from issuing summonses or arresting people who refused to leave their seats.

But the Supreme Court's 6-3 ruling gives the city more power to help with the clearing. Authorities plan to offer shelter and support to those affected.

The case was the most significant to be heard on this issue before the Supreme Court in decades, and came at a time when cities across the country are wrestling with the politically complicated question of how to deal with rising numbers of homeless people and community frustration over related health and safety issues.

“We will continue to lead the way with our services, but we cannot continue to allow people to do whatever they want on the streets of San Francisco, especially when we have a place for them to go,” Breed said.

Conditions have become so bad that residents are afraid to leave their homes and local businesses can no longer hire staff. The area in front of the Federal Building in San Francisco was considered the largest open-air drug market in the entire city.

In San Francisco, homeowners, businesses and local politicians are frustrated by the visible signs of homelessness, which include public streets blocked by tents and trash.

The crime-ridden downtown has seen many stores and restaurants close since the city's drastic decline, although Breed has tried to inflate the statistics, claiming crime rates have dropped in 2023.

In October 2023, it was reported that seven Starbucks stores plan to close as the city continues to struggle with crime, drug use, and homelessness.

In late August 2023, a video was released showing the recently closed Nordstrom flagship store in San Francisco, which was nearly empty after nearly three decades in business.

Homeless people gather downtown, pushing their belongings into shopping carts or sitting on duffel bags, waiting for city services such as shelter, food or clothing, or treatment for mental health and substance abuse problems.

Homeless people gather downtown, pushing their belongings into shopping carts or sitting on duffel bags. Pictured is a homeless person on the sidewalk. City workers clean the streets and remove tents and belongings belonging to homeless people.

Breed says she hopes to exonerate them all, but did not provide specific details on how she plans to achieve that goal. She will likely need the assistance of the police to do so.

The city calculates its homeless numbers every three months, and at the end of the last count in April 2024, a 41 percent decrease was seen compared to July 2023.

In April, 360 tents and structures were counted – a decrease from 610 last summer and 385 in the February count.

This is the lowest value the city has recorded since data collection began in 2018.

Breed said this decline is due to a number of factors, not least police enforcement of laws against camping, even though homeless people have adequate access to emergency shelters.

The city calculates the city's homeless numbers every three months and at the end of the last count in April, a 41 percent decrease was found compared to July 2023. Homeless are considered the city's struggle with fentanyl problems in San Francisco earlier this year. Sidewalks are cleaned in San Francisco's homelessness-plagued Tenderloin neighborhood

A September 2022 ruling by the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals said cities (generally) violate the constitutional ban on cruel and unusual punishment when they punish homeless people for sleeping on public property or using blankets and pillows to protect themselves from the elements.

But earlier this month, a 9th Circuit panel ordered the injunction blocking the camps' evacuation to be lifted.

City employees must continue to bag and label property collected from homeless people.

This November, Breed faces a tough re-election battle as she faces three serious challengers who accuse her administration of failing to address the problems of homelessness, encampments and the open drug market.

With rising rents and a nationwide shortage of affordable housing, more than 100,000 people in California live on the streets.

Police are allowed to enforce laws against camping if homeless people have reasonable access to shelters. A San Francisco Police Department vehicle drives through a homeless camp being cleared in San Francisco. San Francisco is suffering from rising crime, an emptying downtown area, and residents moving to safer, cheaper areas.

Hawaii, Oregon and Arizona are among other Western states where more homeless people live outside in cars and tents than in shelters, despite billions being spent to reduce homelessness – including San Francisco's annual budget of $672 million.

The average monthly rent for a one-bedroom apartment in San Francisco is $3,000.

Advocates say many homeless people would rather stay outdoors than in shelters, where they face the risk of abuse or threats of violence.

Homeless people who have pets, work night shifts, need mental health care, or suffer from substance abuse have a difficult time finding shelter.

While renaming Twitter to X would effectively mark the end of an era for the app, this would be a physical manifestation of the same.

According to X owner Elon Musk, the company now plans to move away from San Francisco in protest against changes to California law with which he disagrees.

I mean, this is really no surprise.

San Francisco is notoriously expensive and cheap real estate is rare.

A three-bedroom house in San Francisco is for sale for $488,000.

This may seem like a bargain in a notoriously expensive city where the average sales price is over $1.4 million.

According to the San Francisco Standard, the house is worth about $1.8 million – more than three times the market price.

However, there is a catch: the buyer may not be able to move in for 30 years.

According to a listing on Park North Real Estate, the property in Russian Hill, an upscale neighborhood of San Francisco, has three bedrooms, two bathrooms and is 1,070 square feet.

However, it is also inhabited, and the tenant has a rental right until 2053.

The ad states that the tenant will pay $416.67 per month and will continue to pay that amount for the entire time he or she lives there.

Steven MacDonald, a legal expert on tenancy law, told ABC 7 News: “For some reason they gave this person a 30-year right of possession. I've seen this happen before. It's a pretty sloppy way of doing estate planning.”

He added: “They can do it that way. I think they should have done it differently.”

MacDonald said it would take a “very, very unique buyer” who would be willing to buy the property below value and wait decades to move in.

Ilia Smith, who lives on the street, said the listing surprised people in the neighborhood.

She told ABC 7 News: “Thirty years. I don't think I'll live to see that.”

According to the San Francisco Standard, the unusual offer for sale is due to a family drama.

As the local newspaper reported, the current tenant, 83-year-old Sandra Lee, lives there with her daughter Cheryl Lee, 66.

It belongs to Sandra Lee's son. Sandra Lee told The Standard that he put the house up for sale against her wishes.

She said her stepfather secretly negotiated a lease for her in 2018 that guaranteed her low rent and housing until 2053.

“If it weren’t for the rental agreement, [my son] “If I didn't know this was filmed in 2018, I don't know where we would be,” she told The Standard.

Business Insider was unable to reach the son for comment. Park North Real Estate also did not immediately respond to a request for comment from BI.

According to the San Francisco Chronicle, the greater San Francisco area is one of the most expensive real estate markets in the world.

The Demographia International Housing Affordability Report ranked it as “impossibly unaffordable.”

In Elon Musk's worldview, San Francisco represents the left-wing hive mind behind all things sinister, and Twitter was his channel. Yes, he actually said that.

Now the Texan emigrant has apparently had enough of the most liberal city in the USA and is possibly considering moving his social media company, now called X, to more politically comfortable areas such as his adopted home state, the Lone Star State.

Real estate firm JLL told the San Francisco Chronicle on Thursday that it had engaged its services to find a new subtenant for the entire 74,000-square-foot complex at its headquarters at 1355 Market Street and the adjacent Building 110.

The landlord, Shorenstein Properties, which bought the building together with JPMorgan through its investment company SRI Nine Market Square, sued Musk early last year for unpaid rent.

In March, she discontinued the proceedings without giving any reasons.

If Musk actually plans to relocate X, that would not be uncharacteristic of the tycoon.

In 2021, he moved Tesla's headquarters from California to Texas in resIn response to policymakers' pandemic lockdowns, the electric car maker has now moved its headquarters there after a dispute with a Delaware judge.

Not surprisingly, when Musk first announced his candidacy for Twitter over two years ago, Texas Governor Greg Abbott jumped at the chance to propose moving Twitter headquarters to his state.

.@elonmusk. Bring Twitter to Texas to join Tesla, SpaceX, and the Boring Company.

— Greg Abbott (@GregAbbott_TX) April 25, 2022

Neither X Corp nor Shorenstein Properties responded to Fortune's immediate request for comment.

Spurred on by his ex-wife, Musk has claimed he bought the social media platform for $44 billion not only to accelerate his plan to clone China's everything app WeChat, but also for the benefit of humanity.

He believed that the microblogging site, because of its location in the heart of the crime-ridden Bay Area, helped spread a “destructive” ideology that threatened Western civilization.

“You could literally shoot an uncut episode of The Walking Dead in downtown San Francisco. This is where San Francisco politics lead, and Twitter exported this self-destructive thought virus to the world,” he wrote last April.

“With some exceptions, other technology companies still do this. Evil in the guise of good.”

A clear break with Twitter’s historical roots?

San Francisco, the city in California with the largest gap between rich and poor, is struggling with homelessness, crime and fentanyl use, especially in the aftermath of the pandemic.

In combination with recent changes in national legislation The hurdles for prosecuting shoplifting are being raised and the minimum wage is being increased. There are repeated headlines about small businesses in particular moving away from the Bay Area. This is leading to more and more vacancies on the commercial real estate market.

“I know a lot of companies are trying to get out of their leases,” Mayor London Breed said four years ago. “A lot of people see this as an opportunity to get out.”

Musk and his close business associates, including David Sacks, have been vocal critics of the city's policymakers in recent years.

Musk blames the local mentality for the city's problems. In his opinion, it must be stopped before it spreads any further: “The views of the extreme left from San Francisco and Berkeley have been spread to the world via Twitter.”

If he were to sublet the offices in the technology center, it would be a clear break with the company's historical roots and almost as significant as the decision to abandon the company's name and rename it “X” this time last year.

It is a unique offering that attracted a long line of potential buyers last week.

“My husband came in and said, 'You have to look out the window. There's a line running from the house to the middle of the block,'” said Ilia Smith, a neighbor.

The 1,100-square-foot home at 30 North View Court in San Francisco has three bedrooms and two bathrooms, and the price is definitely raising eyebrows among neighbors.

“This was a big surprise to all of us on this street,” said her husband, Tim Smith.

“Thirty years. I don’t think I’ll live to see that,” said Ilia Smith.

“The new owner would have to buy the house on a very long-term lease, which is currently being offered to a private individual,” said Tim Smith.

According to the ad, the current tenant will continue to live there and pay the same rent each month. The current tenant pays $417 in rent per month.

ABC7 News went to the Park North Real Estate office in hopes of speaking to the two agents listing the property. No one was available for comment.

We then spoke to a lawyer specializing in tenancy law.

“For some reason they gave this person a 30-year right to possession. I've seen that before. That's a pretty sloppy way of doing estate planning. 'I want to leave this person some security so they don't have to worry about where they're going to live.' That's how they can do it. I think they should have done it differently,” said attorney Steven MacDonald.

MacDonald says the house is being sold as is – take it or leave it.

“It's a very, very unique buyer who is willing to accept a big discount – maybe two-thirds. Maybe you pay $1 million for a $3 million house and wait 20 to 30 years before you can move in.”

For those willing to wait, it's a bargain.

A home in San Francisco's trendy Russian Hill neighborhood is for sale for less than half its value, but the offer is spreading like wildfire because it presents a unique condition for potential buyers.

Built in 1924, the three-bedroom property was listed earlier this month and is worth $1.8 million, with the current asking price at $488,000, according to The San Francisco Standard.

The catch, however, is that the new owners cannot move in until 2053.

The 100 m² house has a driveway, a garage, a fenced backyard and stands on a 300 m² plot.

According to the Park North Real Estate listing, the home is leased and residents may have 30-year lease rights. The listing also states that tenants pay $416.67 a month in rent, in addition to utilities. The current lease “appears to provide tenants with a high long-term lease rate.”

The property is sold as is, which means that the new owners will become the new landlords of the current tenants.

The greater San Francisco area is one of the most expensive places to live. To afford life in a big city like San Francisco, you would have to earn twice the income of most Americans, according to a May analysis by Moody's Analytics.

The average home value in Russian Hill is $1,468,100, down 5.1% from last year.

The unusual sale is partly due to a family feud, according to The San Francisco Standard.

The current tenants of the house are 83-year-old Sandra Lee and her 66-year-old daughter Cheryl Lee. Sandra's son Todd Lee is trying to sell the house against her will, the media outlet reports.

Sandra told the San Francisco Standard that a lease drawn up by her stepfather, the home's original owner, before his death in 2018 gives her long-term rent control until 2053.

“If it weren’t for the rental agreement, [my son] “If I hadn't known that this was happening in 2018, I don't know where we would be,” she said. “It's unbelievable, the deception, the betrayal – my son is doing this to me.”

Due to the terms of this sale, the listing states that neither the seller nor the agent guarantees access to the home. Buyers are strongly advised to review the seller's disclosure package (which can only be requested via email) and speak with an attorney before making an offer.

Representatives for the Lee family and Park North Real Estate did not immediately respond to CNBC Make It's request for comment.

A three-bedroom, two-bathroom home built in 1924 in an upscale San Francisco neighborhood saw its value drop after the property recently for sale hit a major snag.

The single-family home on North View Court in Russian Hill was listed for sale on Zillow two weeks ago for $488,000. That looks like a bargain considering other homes on the cul-de-sac are worth well over $1 million, with one nearly $3 million.

But any buyer would have to wait decades to move in because there is a tenant living there who is only paying $416.67 a month in rent and isn't going anywhere for a while.

“The tenant's current lease appears to grant tenants strict restrictions on the amount of long-term rent, unconventional methods of rent payment, and potential occupancy rights through 2053,” the Zillow listing states. “This is an “as is” sale and the seller hereby reserves the right to decline, counter, and/or accept any offer. Seller and broker do not guarantee access to the home and STRONGLY recommend buyers review the seller's disclosure package/addendums and consult with a San Francisco landlord-tenant attorney BEFORE making an offer.”

The previous owner of the house was over 100 years old and died of natural causes in the house, the ad continues.

Despite the home's “handsome exterior” and Edwardian architecture, its list price of $488,000 is well below Zillow's Zestimate of $526,500, according to the New York Post, and well below its $1.5 million valuation just last month, a drop of more than 60 percent.

Last week, the house was still attracting a long line of potential buyers, local television reports said. That may be because the listing touts the house as an “excellent investment opportunity for just the right buyer.”

Douglas Lee, a real estate agent at Compass, told the Los Angeles Times that the house was an opportunity to “save land” or postpone use of the property for a long time.

“You sit there and wait until the tenant either dies, moves out or the lease ends,” he told the Times. “Once that happens, you can realize a lot of your potential. This is a really good purchase for people with trust funds. If you buy it for your child who is zero or one year old, you know that in 18 years they will be ready for you to realize it.”

The comparatively low real estate prices contrast with the general housing market, which has become increasingly unaffordable, especially in areas like California.

Nationwide, existing home sales prices rose to a new record high in May, even as supply increased. In addition, buyers now need to put down about 35 percent, or nearly $128,000, to afford a typical home, according to Zillow.

The story goes on

Meanwhile, high housing prices are having a “feudalizing effect” on California as policies to limit urban sprawl have pushed up property prices, according to the annual Demographia International Housing Affordability Report, produced by Chapman University in California and the Frontier Centre for Public Policy in Canada.
