(Editor’s Note: Starting this issue, the San Francisco Bay Times will regularly highlight San Francisco legacy businesses as part of our ongoing small business coverage. For more information on the Legacy Business Registry, see pages 2-3.)

Featured Legacy Business: Beck’s Motor Lodge
2222 Market Street
Noon – 8 p.m.
415-621-8212
https://tinyurl.com/282uukn9

A familiar, colorful spot on Market Street is Beck’s Motor Lodge, which has welcomed visitors to the Castro since 1958, when the neighborhood was known as the Eureka Valley. In the recent renovation, the guest rooms were modernized, the building was redesigned and a new, fast elevator was installed. The “buzz” about Beck’s also includes rooftop honey beehives, which are helping to combat the global collapse of the honey bee colony.

With travel picking up again as cities here in California and elsewhere move to less restrictive COVID-19 levels, Beck’s is ready to be a home for your friends and relatives who come from out of town. For readers in other parts of the Bay Area, this is also a fun base that’s not far from other Castro adventures.

Check out the lodge’s comfortable and stylish digs: https://becksmotorlodge.com/gallery/

Skin on the market
2299 Market Street
415-875-7546
http://www.skinonmarket.com/index.html

The founder / owner Deedee Crossett and her team at Skin on Market have the mission to educate guests about achieving healthy, sexy skin while offering “incredibly good customer service” at the same time. They call it “skinning”.

Crossett explains why she wanted to become a skin care therapist: “I loved the beauty industry when I was growing up, but I didn’t know it was possible to have a career. I went to college and made my career as an entrepreneur, but I struggled with my skin and started looking for answers. I am obsessed with wellness offers and products. I decided to become a beautician and open my own vocational school. Before opening the San Francisco Institute for Aesthetics and Cosmetology, I worked at Nob Hill Spa and trained with various skin care lines before settling on Dermalogica. The training at Dermalogica and the International Dermal Institute is unparalleled and the results speak for themselves. “

Her favorite Dermalogica products are Special Cleansing Gel, Antioxidant Hydrating Mist and Lip Renewal Complex. But think about the extensive line from Skin on Market to find out which one you like best.

Services include 30- to 60-minute facials, waxing, BioActive peels, and more.

Double rainbow ice
415 Castro Street
415-757-0657
https://www.doublerainbow.com/

Last June’s announcement that Double Rainbow Ice Cream would be returning to Castro with a scoop shop provided a rare uplifting story during the pandemic. Now open in the heart of the neighborhood, the store has quickly become one of the most popular destinations for a sweet treat.

The “delicious story” of Double Rainbow is as follows:

1970s – It’s 1976 and two childhood friends are opening their first ice cream parlor when a double rainbow illuminates the San Francisco sky.

1980s – A little recognition never hurts. Double Rainbow is voted America’s best ice cream.

1990s – The Mayor of San Francisco proclaims Double Rainbow as the city’s official ice cream.

‘Til Infinity – Double Rainbow is still a family business and continues its tradition of making award-winning ice cream with only the best ingredients.

Plant, pudding and organic ice cream are available. One of our favorite flavors is It’s a Goody, with peanut butter ribbons and rich fudge chips swirled in vanilla. But then there is Chocolate & Vanilla Malt, Vanilla & Strawberry Lemon, Mango Tangerine Sorbet and too many others to list here. Don’t forget the shakes like the rich chocolate that combines light and darker flavors for the ultimate delicious drinkable dessert.
