Let’s talk about those Lions: The Detroit Lions come into Week 7 with a 5-1 record, putting them three games ahead of the Green Bay Packers for the top spot in the AFC North. The division dominated by Aaron Rodgers for so long now belongs to Jared Goff and the Lions.  Fueled by Dan Campbell and a defense you’d hate to be on the other side of, the Lions rebuild is in full effect.  Do the Lions have what it takes to go all the way to the Super Bowl? That remains to be seen, but we’re going to have fun watching them try.

Taylor Swift is the only thing bigger than the NFL: Taylor and Travis officially made it official this past weekend, hard launching their romance with surprise cameos on SNL and a public moment of PDA that sent Swifties and the Chiefs Kingdom swooning. As if fans weren’t already on the Chiefs bandwagon, Swift has made fans of entire universe of 12-year-old girls. If they weren’t already tuning in, they are now. With booming ratings, windbreaker sales galore and Taylor spotting at Arrowhead Stadium, Taylor Swift has proved that the only thing bigger than the NFL is her.

That 49ers defense is dangerous: Brock Purdy silenced naysayers last season when he took over after both QBs Trey Lance and Jimmy Garoppolo suffered season-ending injuries. Coach Shanahan traded Lance and gave Purdy the starting job this season with little trepidation that the last pick of the 2022 NFL Draft had what it takes. Shanahan’s decision has paid off two weeks in, the team is undefeated and Purdy shows full command of the team. But the 49ers Nick Bosa-led defense is what could take this team to the Super Bowl. The Niners come into Week 7 with just loss. If this team can stay healthy, they have the makings of a Super Bowl contender and one of  the most fun teams to watch this season.

It’s a common, often overdone, refrain: golfers playing off their playing partner’s energy. But if there were poster children for that contention, it might just be Tarren and Salinda. There were only three holes where one failed to make birdie or better. The two played quick, hardly had to wait for the group in front of them and watched each other pour in putt after putt. Tarren drained four birdie putts over 20 feet in his opening five holes. He made the turn in 6-under 29, adding an eagle at the par-5 ninth. Salinda took it from there, with birdies on the first four holes of the back nine, all with putts less than 15 feet. The last time a twosome was 17 under or better was The Sentry in 2022. Collin Morikawa and Talor Gooch combined 17 under in the final round.

Sunday’s MLB action started with a bang when Pete Alonso made a surprise return to the Mets lineup about two weeks early after suffering a wrist injury. That was the injury headliner of the day, but there’s still a lot more to come after 15 games.

MLB Injury Report: Monday, June 19

Pete Alonso (wrist), New York Mets — Well, that was quick. When Alonso was brought to the IL last week with a bruised bone and a sprained wrist, he was expected to be out for at least three weeks. But just 11 days later, the first baseman was back in the Mets’ lineup as of Sunday afternoon. He went 0-4 with three strikeouts, so there’s clearly some rust, but Alonso seems good enough to swing the racquet normally:

Julio Urias (thigh)/Daniel Hudson (knee), Los Angeles Dodgers – Finally, some good news for the Dodgers’ pitching team, who have been struggling lately, particularly during this weekend’s win over the San Francisco Giants. Urias, who has been out since last month with a thigh strain, and Hudson, who has not played at all this year while in rehab after knee surgery, are expected to rejoin the team before the end of the month:

Evan Phillips probably holds the most leverage spots, but given how much manager Dave Roberts loves to shuffle and combine based on matchups, Hudson should still have a lot of work to do in the ninth inning.

Sean Murphy (hamstring), Atlanta Braves – As expected, Murphy was absent from Sunday’s squad after leaving Saturday’s game with a hamstring injury, but there was good news nonetheless: an MRI showed only an irritation and no actual strain. The backstop may need a few more days off, but the team is hoping, at least for now, that it won’t need to be deployed to the IL.

Casey Schmitt (forearm)/Alex Cobb (oblique), San Francisco Giants – It was a bad day for batters, who were plunked when Schmitt took a pitch off his arm at Dodger Stadium. The rookie was forced to leave the game but it appears that was just a precaution – his x-rays were negative and he should be back in the line-up soon.

Cobb, meanwhile, was placed on the IL with an oblique strain. While we’ve watched this type of injury ambush pitchers for several weeks, the Giants don’t seem overly concerned. Manager Gabe Kapler told reporters the righty felt some tightness throwing a bullpen over the weekend, which the team wanted to do to ensure he had more time to get things right. It’s possible that Cobb just missed a start or two.

Ian Hamilton (groin)/Nestor Cortes (rotator cuff), New York Yankees – Not much was going well for the Yankees this weekend in Boston, but at least there was some movement on the injury front. Hamilton, who had emerged as a key midfielder, scored twice in a clean inning in his first rehab appearance at Double-A Somerset. The right-winger later told reporters he expects to need at least two more sorties but could be ready by next weekend.

As for Cortes, he’s throwing for the first time since he was sidelined with a rotator cuff tear earlier this month:

There’s still a long way to go for the left-hander — he probably won’t return to the New York rotation before the All-Star break — but it’s a start.

Tanner Houck (face), Boston Red Sox – The Red Sox issued an update on Houck a day after the right-hander was hit in the face by a line drive.

Houck did suffer some sort of facial fracture — and not just the contusion he was originally diagnosed with — and was placed on the injured list, but all things considered, the outcome could have been a lot worse. Thankfully, it looks like the right will be fine, although there’s no timeline for his return to the mound just yet. The team hasn’t revealed who might fill Houck’s place in the rotation; Nick Pivetta and Corey Kluber would be obvious candidates.

jonathan india, Cincinnati Reds – India equalized early in the eighth inning with a home run on backfield, but were forced out of the game two innings later after being knocked out by a double play. Good news for Cincy: The Reds clinched the win in their 10th game for the eighth consecutive year and their second baseman appears to be doing well.

Lars Nootbaar (back), St Louis Cardinals — We’d say Nootbaar seems ready to return to St. Louis:

Reports surfaced early Sunday afternoon that the outfielder — who started a rehab stint at Triple-A Memphis this week — could leave the IL as early as Monday, and he responded by hitting a home run a few hours later. The team won’t make a decision until they see how his sore back is reacting, but it certainly sounds like he’ll be back in the next few days.

Alejandro Kirk (Hand), Toronto Blue Jays — Kirk was another pitch hit victim on Sunday. Toronto’s loss to the Texas Rangers left hand lacerated and bruised. X-rays were thankfully negative, but it remains to be seen how long it will be before the backing can swing a racquet comfortably again. Danny Jansen has had the most starts behind the plate lately anyway.

Miguel Amaya (Wrist), Chicago Cubs – We told you that there were a lot of batters plunked on Sunday. Amayas was one of the scariest, a 96mph fastball right off his wrist that left him prone in pain for quite a while, but manager David Ross said his catcher seemed to avoid anything too serious:

The rookie has been swinging a hot racquet since his debut last month, earning more and more playing time off the record.

Jeimer Candelario (thumb), Washington Nationals — Candelario was left out of the Nats’ lineup late on Sunday, and manager Davey Martinez told reporters after the game that his third baseman suffered a bruised thumb bone during Saturday’s game. He’s under consideration on a day-to-day basis for now, but the team will likely wait until Monday or Tuesday to see how they react before making a decision on a return.

Michael A Taylor (Head), Minnesota Twins — If Amaya didn’t have the scariest HBP of the day, then Taylor certainly did. The midfielder was hit in the back of the head by a mistaken curveball by Tigers substitute Alex Lange in the eighth inning, catching him just under his batting helmet as he tried to duck out of the way. Taylor left the game with a so-called head bruise and eventually went to the coaching bench under his own steam. Manager Rocco Baldelli said initial tests showed no concussion-like symptoms. He’s already been ruled out of Monday’s game but it’s too early to tell if he’ll need a call-up for IL.

Matt Vierling (rear), Detroit Tigers — Vierling was also late and missed Sunday’s game with back spasms just days after returning from an IL stay with back pain. That doesn’t bode well, of course, although the team hasn’t offered an update yet. The outfielder has .529 hits so far this month – and even got endorsed by the Oakland Athletics Twitter account at the All-Star Game – so it would be a huge loss to be forced to miss any more time.

California And New York Could Ban 5 Food Additives Linked To Health Concerns 

Newly proposed bills in California and New York are putting food additives — the chemicals manufacturers add to food to act as preservatives or to enhance color, texture or taste — under the microscope. The state legislators are seeking to prohibit the manufacturing and sale of products containing additives that have been linked to cancer, neurodevelopmental issues and hormone dysfunction. The five additives named in the bills are most commonly found in baked goods, candy and soda and are almost totally banned in food products in Europe. Several health associations, including the Endocrine Society and the American Academy of Pediatrics, have raised concerns about the potential health harms of food additives as a whole. (Smith, 4/13)

Millions Expected To Lose Dental Care Coverage After Medicaid Review

More than 14 million adults across the United States who receive Medicaid are at risk of losing dental health coverage now that the Covid public health emergency is over, according to data exclusively obtained by NBC News. The public health emergency ended April 1, allowing states to review Medicaid recipients’ eligibility and disenroll them from the program for the first time since the beginning of the pandemic. Around 15.7 million people are expected to lose health coverage as a result. The emergency declaration did not allow states to remove enrollees from the program during the pandemic, which caused programs to expand precipitously over the past three years. (McCausland, 4/14)

Medicaid: Here’s What You Can Do If You Lose Coverage 

Though millions of Americans are expected to be kicked off of Medicaid in coming months, they don’t all have to be left uninsured. But it could take some work to regain health coverage. “For a lot of people, this can be a very disruptive period of time,” said Sabrina Corlette, co-director of the Center on Health Insurance Reforms at Georgetown University. “There is a significant time and paperwork burden being placed on families – a lot of them very low income, a lot of them medically vulnerable.” (Luhby, 4/15)

The U.S. Supreme Court will hear arguments on Tuesday in a case that could undermine one of the government’s most powerful tools for fighting fraud in government contracts and programs. The False Claims Act dates back to the Civil War, when it was enacted to combat rampant fraud by private contractors who were overbilling or simply not delivering goods to the troops. But the law over time was weakened by congressional amendments. Then, in 1986, Congress toughened the law, and then toughened it again. The primary Senate sponsor was — and still is — Iowa Republican Charles Grassley. … He is alarmed by the case before the Supreme Court this week. At issue is whether hundreds of major retail pharmacies across the country knowingly overcharged Medicaid and Medicare by overstating what their usual and customary prices were. Access to the abortion pill mifepristone will remain unchanged until next Wednesday, after a U.S. Supreme Court justice on Friday issued a stay on last week’s ruling from a conservative Texas judge banning the medicine. Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito issued an administrative stay preserving access to mifepristone, which has been approved by the Food and Drug Administration since 2000, until 11:59 p.m. ET on Wednesday. It is likely the country’s highest court will rule more substantively on access to the medication before then, a decision that will have major ramifications for the FDA’s authority and access to the commonly used drug. One of San Francisco’s cheesiest restaurants has found a new home and will reopen on Monday after being thought to be gone forever.

“Reopening Monday 24th January. We are pleased to announce that we will be reopening in a new location – 430 Columbus Ave,” the restaurant’s website said in a statement. “We look forward to serving you.”

The new location is just one block from Columbus from the previous location, in the space where Calzone’s Restaurant used to operate. Calzone’s was run by the same group of owners as the Rose.

Opened in 1991 in the heart of North Beach, The Stinking Rose — affectionately named for the ancient Roman term for garlic — soon became a bustling, eclectic spot on Columbus Ave.

“They season the garlic with food,” wrote the SF Examiner in a glowing review, which revealed the restaurant uses 1.5 tons of garlic a month. Inside, the world’s largest garlic braid meandered through the restaurant, and a mini mechanical garlic factory lined the walls.

Owners Jerry Dal Bozzo, who grew up in the neighborhood, and Dante Serafini became successful restaurateurs in the Bay Area in the ’90s, running Calzone’s, The Franciscan and Frankie’s at Pier 43 in Fisherman’s Wharf, The Dead Fish in Crockett, and Salito’s Crab House and Prime Rib in Sausalito next to their flagship on Columbus.

The restaurant was so successful that they opened a second Stinking Rose in Beverly Hills (this place appears to still be closed).

After almost 30 years in business, the North Beach location closed in March 2020, like almost every other San Francisco eatery. The outlook seemed bleak when Dal Bozzo put the house on the market in June last year. The reservation site OpenTable has even changed its status from “temporarily” to “permanently closed”. But after a change or heart, owners will move to the calzone’s space down the block.

“We treated it with garlic,” co-owner Jerry Dal Bozzo told the San Francisco Chronicle. “We brought some of the decor from the Stinking Rose, so it’s a different garlic restaurant… Hopefully people will like it.” (SFGATE and the San Francisco Chronicle are both owned by Hearst but operate independently)

Stinking Rose will reopen on January 24th at 12pm with a shorter menu. 430 Columbus Ave.

Schools in San Francisco will reopen in person starting Monday

Teachers at the John Muir Elementary School in San Francisco were busy on Friday preparing their classrooms for the school reopening on Monday. Every school in the district has been approved by the health department to reopen.

SAN FRANCISCO – Teachers at the John Muir Elementary School in San Francisco were busy on Friday preparing their classrooms for the school reopening on Monday.

“This is the day we dreamed of,” said Vince Matthews, superintendent of the San Francisco Unified School District.

Matthews said the district has been working to develop plans to get students into class and keep the coronavirus out if possible.

“We are committed to implementing all public health standards and protocols. Each campus has been cleared to reopen by the SF Department of Public Health, ”he said.

This means that all windows can now be opened and closed and all schools have adequate ventilation.

San Francisco schools also follow California health guidelines by requiring that all teachers and staff be vaccinated.

Those who are not vaccinated will have to have a weekly COVID test starting September 7th.

The district is still collecting data on the vaccination rates of its employees. But first results showed a vaccination rate of 98%.

“We look forward to entering the new school year with your new protocols. We have updated them to create the safest conditions for students, families and all workers at school sites,” said Cassondra Curiel, director of the United Educators of San Francisco.

Students in San Francisco this year will learn that there is such a thing as free lunch.
The district checks every child in the district with a free meal, regardless of family income.

From Sunday, everyone 18 years of age and younger can drive Muni free of charge for the next 12 months. You have to wear masks.

The schools also pay special attention to the mental health of the students.

Around 700 students have opted for distance learning. That is less than 2% of the entire school district’s student body.
