‘Rampant crime has become a regular part of life’: CNN reporter witnesses 3 thefts in 30 minutes at a San Francisco Walgreens — here’s why retailers say they’re fleeing the Bay Area

America’s most-robbed Walgreens was the victim of at least three thefts within 30 minutes in July, according to CNN Senior National Correspondent Kyung Lah — one of the latest examples of brazen crime at the location.

The thefts were witnessed during the filming of a televised report at the Walgreens in San Francisco’s Richmond neighborhood. According to Lah, Walgreens has identified this location as having the “highest theft rate” — hit more than a dozen times a day — of the pharmacy chain’s nearly 9,000 U.S. stores.

Don’t miss

Worried about the economy? Here are the best shock-proof assets for your portfolio. (They’re all outside of the stock market.)

Commercial real estate has outperformed the S&P 500 over 25 years. Here’s how to diversify your portfolio without the headache of being a landlord

Americans are spending a ridiculous $253/month more on groceries. But this simple hack can turn your stressful daily spending into a golden nest egg

Shoplifting had become so bad in the Bay Area store that staff resorted to securing certain items with padlocks and chains. But they were ordered by corporate to remove them “because of the negative messaging,” Lah said.

Still, many other products at this location, including ketchup and mustard, remain locked behind plastic casings.

Other stories across the city have also resorted to locking up more products like cosmetics, frozen food and even coffee.

San Francisco resident Richie Greenberg, who toured the Richmond Walgreens with Lah, described what he felt after previously seeing the chained-up items.

“This was bizarre, something I’d never seen before,” he said. “This is just more icing on the cake. Telling us that rampant crime has become a regular part of life.”

A retail exodus

Several retail giants — including Nordstrom, H&M, Marshall’s, Gap, Banana Republic, Anthropologie and Office Depot — have announced they’re pulling the plug on some San Francisco locations.

When Whole Foods announced in mid-April that it was temporarily closing its store at Trinity Place in the city’s Tenderloin District, a spokesperson for the grocer expressed concerns about “the safety of our team members” due to criminal activity near the store.

Story continues

Read more: It’s going to be ugly’: This CEO issued a dire warning about U.S. real estate, saying areas will be ‘destroyed’ — but he still likes 1 niche

These issues, while significant in San Francisco, are not isolated to the Bay Area.

According to a study by the National Retail Federation, organized retail crime and theft are growing in both scope and complexity across the U.S.

To combat this, Home Depot CEO Ted Decker announced in June that the home improvement company would be “investing in more security guards” to protect the safety of its employees and customers. This sadly follows the deaths of two Home Depot employees during theft incidents.

Concern for commercial real estate

Many cities have seen retail store closures in recent months. Insider recently reported that as many as 2,373 major retail stores are set to close this year across the U.S — not all down to crime, but some due to dwindling foot traffic in the age of online shopping and economic factors like rising interest rates.

These trends are causing headaches for commercial real estate investors, since they present more challenges for the already shaky and debt-ridden sector.

In particular, office real estate is under immense strain due to the rise in remote and hybrid work during and after the COVID-19 pandemic. Rising borrowing costs are also squeezing property owners and complicating real estate financing.

In recent months, high-profile investors — including Elon Musk — have sounded the alarm about a potential market crash.

Real estate investing expert Patrick Carroll said the commercial real estate market is tumbling toward a crash that could be as devastating as the 2008 crisis.

“The party’s over, unfortunately,” he said. “The office market’s going to be destroyed, hotels are going to be destroyed — it’s going to be ugly.”

AT THE END of August Rob Harley released his album Big Tree. Previous singles include the title track Big Tree and Straight For Your Love which saw national coverage in the press and radio in Ireland.

Produced by Christian Best (Mick Flannery) in Cork, Big Tree was due to come out during Covid but lockdown pushed it back until now.

Big Tree – the album

What are you up to?

I am promoting my album Big Tree, which was released at the end of of August.

Which piece of music always sends a shiver down your spine?

A Day In The Life by The Beatles. It’s so unique, there’s no piece of music like it that captures so many genres in one song.

Which musician has most influenced you?

Lindsey Buckinham —an incredible guitarist using the Travis picking style which I try to incorporate into my own playing

Who would be in your ideal band?

Rory Gallagher, Lindsey Buckingham, John Entwistle, John Bonham

How did you get started in music?

I listened to a lot of music growing up from classical to rock, my older brother showed me my first couple of chords on the guitar and I was addicted from that point on, I had to know more!

Where are you from in Ireland, and what are your roots?

I was born in Croydon in London to Irish parents, we moved to San Francisco and then came back to Cork. My mother is from Cork and my father is from Donegal.

What’s on your smartphone playlist at the minute?

Bob Dylan, Ron Sexsmith and Beck

Football or art galleries?

Art galleries, I visit the Crawford art gallery in Cork a couple of times a year, lovely place for a sit down and a cup of coffee.

What is your favourite place in Ireland?

West Cork, I love going to Clonakilty there’s a great venue called DeBarras Folk Club there, then on to Connolly’s of Leap, another brilliant venue and then down to Baltimore.

What would be your motto?

It is better to light a candle than to curse the darkness.

Mozart or Martin Hayes?

Martin Hayes all the way, I love the haunting Garrett Barry’s Jig on his latest album Peggy’s Dream.

Which living person do you most admire?

Paul McCartney, he’s just unstoppable, going on tour at 81 and keeps churning out brilliant music and looks great for it.

Who will act you when they make a film of your life?

Cillian Murphy a fellow Corkman, although it would be a bit of a step down after playing Oppenheimer!

Rob Harley

Who will you thank in your Grammy award acceptance speech?

I would like to thank my lovely partner Léan and daughter Fiadh.

If you weren’t a musician what other job would you be really good at?

I think I would be good at electrical repairs or plumbing, I’m pretty handy around the house.

What’s the worst piece of advice you’ve been given this year?

“Always stay the same, never change”. I think we have to evolve, especially when you have kids.

Have you a favourite line from a song?

“I ain’t a-saying you treated me unkind, you could have done better but I don’t mind, you just kinda wasted my precious time, but don’t think twice it’s alright” — Bob Dylan

In terms of inanimate objects, what is your most precious possession?

My guitar, it’s not a very expensive one but I’ve had it for a long time, it’s my workhorse.

What’s the best thing about where you live?

Cork is a city that is relatively small, you always meet someone you know walking down Patrick Street, and stop for a chat. Also there’s West Cork, and loads of beaches nearby.

. . . . and the worst?

The roads are in a pretty bad condition, and traffic in the city is awful.

What’s the greatest lesson life has taught you?

To always keep moving forward, as I say in my song When It’s Done, “you think on but don’t think back”.

What gives you the greatest laugh?

That would be my daughter Fiadh, she is the funniest little toddler and has the best laugh.

What do you believe in?

I believe in knowing your own value and believing in yourself.

What do you consider the greatest work of art?

The Starry Night by Vincent Van Gogh, it’s such a spectacular alive watercolour that jumps off of the canvas.

Who/what is the greatest love of your life?

My daughter Fiadh is the greatest, she just gives me constant joy, happiness and I learn more about myself through her every day.

One moment please…

The great thing about homeownership is that there’s no landlord telling you what you can and can’t do. The not-so-great thing about homeownership is that there’s no landlord to call when things go wrong.

Toilet running off and on, or nonstop? Sink that won’t drain? Door squeaking as ominously as the lid to Dracula’s casket? The cost of fixing these and other relatively minor problems can eat into your budget. Unless, of course, you try fixing them yourself.

To be clear: We’re not suggesting you tackle major plumbing repairs, or re-wire your entire house without knowing the difference between hot and neutral wires. But there’s no reason to shell out the bucks for a new chair if the one you have can be repaired fairly quickly, or to automatically call a plumber when your garbage disposal stops in mid-chew. Think of all the money you might save if it turns out that all you had to do was hit the “reset” button.

Following are some examples of fairly simple fixes that most homeowners will face during their lives. Not only can you likely do them yourself, but you can do so in a matter of minutes (or at least less than an hour). Happy repairing!

Kids (and cats!) sometimes bend miniblind slats while trying to look outside. According to Family Handyman, an inexpensive little doohickey called the MiniBlindRx can fix things can fix. You slide the palm-sized tool back and forth along the bent slat, crimping it along the way, until it looks acceptable once more.

Several reviewers on Amazon pointed out that the slat doesn’t look completely new, but it’s darned close. “I don’t think your guests would even notice it,” says one cat-owning reviewer. Another reviewer notes that it saved them from having to pay the landlord for damages.

If your door squeaks, it’s often a problem with the hinges. The first thing to do is tighten the screws on the hinge. Open and close the door a couple of times, and if the squeak is gone, your work is done.

Still squeaking? Lubricate the hinges, advises the Angi website (formerly Angie’s List). You might be able to squirt in some WD-40 and call it good. But if the door still squeaks, lightly tapping the door’s hinge pin with a hammer until the pin is lodged upward; spray the hinge and also the pin before tapping it back down into place.

According to Angi, you can also lubricate with a non-glycerin bar soap, olive oil or good old petroleum jelly. And if the door still squeaks? You can try removing the hinge pins and cleaning them with steel wool, but you might also have to replace them. The Angi’s list link explains more.

Disposal won’t turn on? Look underneath the unit for the reset button. Push it, wait a few seconds and hit the power switch. Sometimes that’s all it takes, according to Roto-Rooter.

If it still doesn’t work, unplug the disposal and try another outlet; if it works, then you might need to reset the breaker switch for the original outlet.

If the motor is running but the food isn’t getting ground up, there could be a jam. First, make sure to unplug the disposal. Then, use a 1/4-inch hex wrench (aka Allen wrench) in the center hole at the bottom of the unit, and turn back and forth. Typically, that will free up the clog. Don’t have a wrench? Insert a wooden spoon or dowel into the drain, press the spoon/dowel against one of the propeller arms, and then push the arm counterclockwise.

If that doesn’t work, make sure the unit is unplugged and use kitchen tongs or your hand to feel for anything that’s keeping the blades from moving. Roto-Rooter’s “How to Un-Jam a Garbage Disposal Like a Plumber” video offers step-by-step instructions for all these steps.

As chairs age, the glue holding them together weakens. Ideally, you should disassemble and re-glue it. But according to Family Handyman, there’s a simpler fix if it’s a chair without much sentimental value:

Buy some trim-head screws

Drill pilot holes in the wiggly areas.

“Toe-screw” the screws into the pilot holes, making sure to drive from the bottom so you won’t be able to see the fix later. (The site shows how.)

If the chair is super wobbly, Family Handyman suggests forcing epoxy adhesive into the gaps to make the fit stronger.

The easiest forms of weatherstripping include self-sticking vinyl or felt strips and door sweeps, available at home improvement centers and big-box stores. You peel and stick them anywhere that air is getting in (or out). Other varieties of weatherstripping must be stapled, nailed or glued in place. The U.S. Department of Energy website offers information and installation tips on most varieties of weatherstripping.

Replacing or adding this product to windows and doors can keep out both wintry drafts and hot summer air, which helps keep you more comfortable and also reduces utility costs.

And speaking of costs: Check to see if you’re eligible for financial aid from the federal Weatherization Assistance Program.

A small hole is fairly easy to fix with a drywall repair kit, available online or at home improvement centers. They typically include a 4-by-4-inch patch. These tips from Home Depot should make the job a snap:

Cover the drywall hole with self-adhesive mesh. Using a putty knife, spread the kit’s spackle or joint compound over the hole. Use a criss-cross pattern and try to make the edges blend into the wall.

Let dry for up to 24 hours, then apply a second coat if needed. Once that coat is dry, sand the area until smooth. Next, paint the spot to match the wall. Keep in mind that you might have to repaint the whole wall if the previous paint job was a long time ago and the patched spot stands out.

A larger patch job will likely mean cutting into the wall and adding a new piece of drywall. Home Depot shows how to do that, too.

The WikiHow site suggests repairing relatively small holes with clear nail polish. Simply brush it directly over both ends of the tear to “glue” it back together; do this on both sides of the screen. Allow to dry for 24 hours for maximum strength. (Note: For a tinted window screen, look for gray or black nail polish.)

WikiHow also says that you can cut a patch from an old screen and weave it into place, or darn a smaller hole with a needle and aluminum threads pulled from the screen, but that sounds like a lot of work. If you’re up to the challenge, directions can be found here.

Or, take the path of least resistance and patch with screen repair tape, available online or at a home improvement center. Or, consider replacing the whole screen.

Kitchen sinks are especially prone to clogging due to food residue, cooking oils and mineral buildup. According to the Martha Stewart website, you can loosen a clog with baking soda and vinegar. First, sop out as much standing water as possible; next, dump half a cup of baking soda into the drain and slowly pour in half a cup of vinegar. Cover the drain with a plug or a clean cloth, let sit for half an hour, and then slowly pour a kettle of hot water down the drain. (You can also use this trick proactively, whenever the sink starts draining sluggishly.)

Another simple option is the drain stick, aka drain auger: an inexpensive, flexible plastic strip with sharp barbs inserted into the drain to pull out clogs (especially hair).

Next up is the plumber’s friend, aka the plunger. According to Lowes.com, use a wet cloth to block a sink or tub’s overflow opening; if you’re working with a double sink, block the drain and overflow of the adjacent one. If there’s no standing water in the sink, pour in a few inches of water, which will help force the obstruction out. Work the plunger over the drain hole for up to half a minute, then see if the obstruction is gone.

No luck? An auger cable (drain snake) is your next step. Insert into the drain until you reach the clog, then break it up by twisting, pulling and pushing the auger. In some cases it might be necessary to remove the sink trap and push the auger directly into the drain; if you don’t feel good about doing this, go ahead and call a plumber.

This can sound daunting, but it’s a fairly simple fix: Take out the old, squirt in the new. These tips from This Old House will make it easier:

Cover the tub with a drop cloth, then use a razor scraper or utility knife at a low angle to (carefully!) cut off the old caulking.

Use a dry, nonabrasive pad to remove any caulk residue. If it was silicone caulk, use a soft rag moistened with mineral spirits.

To create a straight bead of caulk, position parallel strips of painter’s tape along the areas to be caulked. Make them about three-eighths of an inch apart.

Using steady pressure, apply the caulk along the seam. Next, use a damp lint-free rag or paper towel to press the caulk in so it’s concave.

Carefully remove the tape, making sure you don’t touch the caulk while doing so. Use the damp towel again to eliminate any ridges where the tape had been.

What’s the main source of residential water use? Showers and sinks, right? Or maybe washing machines?

Wrong. According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, toilets account for almost 30% of indoor residential water use. Imagine the waste if a toilet runs intermittently, or won’t stop running at all without repeated handle jiggling.

Depending on the problem, it could be as simple as scrubbing mineral deposits off the toilet tank’s flapper and its seal, making sure the flapper chain is the right length, or replacing the flapper altogether. If water keeps draining into the tank’s overflow tube, making the toilet run off and on, the fix might be as easy as making a slight bend on the float arm.

The suspect, accused of using a metal pipe to attack a former San Francisco fire officer, was released from custody on Thursday and is scheduled to appear in court for a preliminary hearing at the end of May.

Former San Francisco Fire Department Commissioner Don Carmignani suffered serious injuries after he was attacked with a metal pipe by a suspect outside his mother’s San Francisco home in early April, according to prosecutors. According to the prosecutor, Carmignani was therefore unable to testify in the preliminary hearing on Thursday.

The judge on the case granted the prosecution’s request to postpone the hearing to May 23 and released suspect Garret Doty, whom San Francisco police had charged with assault with a deadly weapon, from prison.

Kleigh Hathaway, Doty’s public defender, claims her client was not the attacker in the incident but rather protected himself from the former firefighter, who she says attacked several homeless people with bear spray, including Doty.

Hathaway also released surveillance video, which she says showed Carmignani attacking Doty with bear spray minutes before Carmignani was attacked with the metal pipe.

On April 5, Carmignani called 911 to report three homeless people at a camp outside his mother’s home in the affluent Marina neighborhood, he said in a statement to CNN.

“That evening I arrived at my mother’s house and told these individuals to leave,” Carmignani said in the statement. “The incident culminated in one of the people pulling out a piece of metal pipe and hitting me on the head several times.”

Carmignani was hospitalized and underwent emergency surgery, his statement said.

Carmignani’s attorney, Samuel Ray, said in a statement that the San Francisco Police Department did not respond to the morning call about people camping outside his client’s home and that “no one from the SFPD or the DA’s office ever conducted an interview or attempted to conduct an interview.” Don on his version of events.”

CNN questioned SFPD about Ray’s allegation. The District Attorney says the SFPD has requested an interview on multiple occasions.

Other homeless victims, says the public defender

Video from outside a gas station shared by Camignani’s lawyer appears to show the former firefighter trying to defend himself while being hit by a man with a metal pole. The video does not show the moments before the altercation.

A separate video, also provided by Carmignani’s lawyer and apparently taken from a nearby building, shows the former city official running down the street with Doty at his heels, swinging his rod at Carmignani’s head as he flees .

Doty’s public defender told reporters Wednesday the case was a self-defense case, in part because she says there appears to be a repeating pattern of someone matching Carmignani’s description allegedly walking within a four-block area between November 2021 and his attacked homeless people with bear spray and January 2023, based on police reports provided to her by prosecutors and police.

“In all of them the victims are not housed, the victims are either sleeping in their tents, sitting on a bench and minding their own business,” Hathaway said, citing police reports of eight separate attacks on homeless people included in discovery evidence that she has received. “Luckily, one of them was caught on video.”

CNN has requested the police reports but has not yet received them.

Carmignani has denied being the person in the videos of the bear spray attacks and says he did not commit any of the attacks.

A copy of the video provided by the San Francisco Public Defender’s Office shows an apparently homeless man sleeping outside on a sidewalk. According to Hathaway, the video was recorded in November 2021 on the same street as Carmignani’s residence.

“He goes and sprays a giant can of bear spray – the same gun that was used in the Doty incident – he sprays this bear spray on the homeless. Don’t just walk by, focus on the victim’s face for at least a few seconds and then walk away,” she says.

“This man is described as 5’10”, 6’1″, 280, 300 pounds, gray hair, brown hair. Very similar and apt to what Mr. Carmignani looks like,” she said.

“I am confident that my client was aware of his (Carmignani’s) past violence,” Hathaway said, captioning an April 5 video that appears to show the first confrontation between Carmignani and her client. In that video, Hathaway says Doty can be seen running away, and the “first thing he does” is crouch down and cover his head with this coat, “implying that he’s experiencing the violence of the bear spray.” knows and has been exposed to this violence in previous incidents.”

When asked why Carmignani wasn’t charged in connection with the homeless attack, San Francisco District Attorney Brooks Jenkins told reporters Wednesday, “Nothing has been submitted to our office by the police requesting that they do anything for their purpose.” the indictment.”

Jenkins stated that she viewed a video, but that “it’s just an allegation at the moment as to who it is” and that further investigation is needed.

Jenkins added that prosecutors will continue to focus on the April 5 incident. “I am concerned about the incident that brings us to court today,” she said. “So this specific incident and what was happening at that point in time is what is primarily relevant at this point.”

According to Jenkins, Carmignani has not yet given an interview to the San Francisco Police Department, although he did do a sit-down interview with CNN affiliate KPIX.

Dave Chappelle, left, invited Elon Musk onto the stage during his comedy show in San Francisco Sunday night. (Associated Press)

Before welcoming Elon Musk onto the stage in San Francisco on Sunday, Dave Chappelle encouraged his fans to “make some noise for the richest man in the world.”

And they did – by loudly booing the billionaire tech mogul for nearly five minutes.

Chappelle invited Musk to his stand-up show with Chris Rock at the Chase Center in San Francisco, where the comedian told sneering viewers to “shut up,” to no avail. The new Twitter owner, who wore an “I Love Twitter” shirt to the event, also drew some cheers from the crowd at the end of the show.

“Cheers and boos I see,” Chappelle heard in a video posted to Twitter by @SteveGoffman.

“Didn’t expect that, did you?” Musk said.

“It sounds like some of the people you fired are in the audience,” Chappelle joked – referring to the broad contingent of Twitter employees who supported Musk shortly after buying the social media platform had dismissed.

“Hey, wait a minute, those of you guys are booing,” Chappelle continued in a failed attempt to calm the crowd while Musk stood silently on stage in San Francisco, where Twitter’s headquarters are located.

“Hard way ahead as it sounds,” the comedian conceded. “But do you know one thing? All these people who are booing – and I’m just pointing out the obvious – have terrible seats, and I get it.

“Boooo! listen, whatever. Look, Motherf— this N— isn’t even trying to die on Earth. His whole business model is: —F— Earth. Boo anything you want, take me with you [Musk] … I fly to Mars. Whatever P—they got up there, we’ll do that.”

Musk could only muster a quick “Thanks for having me on stage” as the boos continued as Chappelle boasted about riding jetpacks and going “baller s—” with the Tesla exec.

“Dave, what should I say?” Musk said about three and a half minutes into the Boo Fest.

“Don’t say anything,” Chappelle advised. “It will only spoil the moment. Do you hear that sound Elon? This is the sound of impending civil unrest. … Booing is not the best thing you can do.”

The story goes on

On Monday, Musk claimed on Twitter that the crowd reaction was “90% cheers and 10% boos (except during quiet times)”.

“But that’s still a lot of boos, which is a first for me in real life (frequently on Twitter),” he added. “It’s almost like I insulted SF’s crazy leftists…but nahhh.”

Both Musk and Chappelle have recently come under scrutiny for their divisive behavior. The SpaceX founder has been heavily criticized for his turbulent Twitter takeover, while the insurgent has been slammed for making transphobic remarks in his 2021 Netflix special.

“I’m your ally,” Chappelle told the crowd in San Francisco after standing by Musk. “I wish everyone in this hall peace and the joy of feeling free. May your pursuit of happiness make you happy. Amen. Thank you, San Francisco. No city on earth has ever been friendlier… Good night.”
