Who’re the candidates on the GOP debate in Milwaukee, and what are their backgrounds?

As most of the Republican presidential candidates prepare to take the stage for the first debate in Milwaukee, here’s a rundown on who they are.

Who will appear at the debate?

Eight Republicans will appear at the debate, which will air from 9. to 11 p.m. Aug. 23 on Fox News Channel; Fox Business Network; foxnews.com; Fox Nation, Fox’s on-demand subscription platform; and the streaming service Rumble.

The participants are North Dakota Gov. Doug Burgum, former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, former South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley, former Arkansas Gov. Asa Hutchinson, former Vice President Mike Pence, entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy, and Sen. Tim Scott of South Carolina.

A ninth candidate, former President Donald Trump, qualified, but has chosen not to participate.

Four candidates missed the Republican National Committee’s polling and fundraising threshold. They are: Miami Mayor Francis Suarez, former Rep. Will Hurd of Texas, businessman Perry Johnson and radio host Larry Elder.

What major offices have the candidates held?

Of the nine Republican candidates invited to the debate, eight have held elected office.

Trump and Pence have served as president and vice president, respectively. Six have served as governors, two currently (DeSantis and Burgum) and four previously (Pence in Indiana, Hutchinson, Haley and Christie).

One candidate, Scott, is a sitting senator, while four have served in the House: Pence, DeSantis, Hutchinson and Scott.

Haley served in Trump’s Cabinet as United Nations ambassador.

Ramaswamy has not held elected office.

How many of the candidates are lawyers?

More than half the 2024 GOP candidates have law degrees, though not all have practiced law in recent years. Of these, the most prominent figures in the law have probably been Christie, who served as a U.S. attorney in New Jersey, and Hutchinson, who was a U.S. attorney in Arkansas.

Among the nine Republican candidates invited to debate, only DeSantis has military service, having risen to lieutenant commander in the U.S. Navy. He served on active duty between 2004 and 2010 and then for nine more years in the reserves. (DeSantis used his law degree as a member of the Judge Advocate General’s Corps, including in service at the Guantánamo Bay detention center in Cuba.)

How old are the candidates?

The oldest Republican or Democratic candidate is President Joe Biden, at 80.

Trump is the GOP field’s eldest candidate at 77.

Among Republicans who will be on stage, only Hutchinson is in his 70s. Pence, Burgum and Christie are in their 60s; Scott and Haley are in their 50s; DeSantis is 44; and Ramaswamy is 38.

Ramaswamy is roughly the age Democrat Pete Buttigieg was when the future transportation secretary ran for president in 2020.

How diverse are the Republicans on stage?

Scott is Black, and Haley and Ramaswamy have South Asian ancestry. Among the candidates who didn’t qualify, Suarez is Hispanic, Elder is Black, and Hurd is multiracial — making this the most diverse Republican field in history.

The previous GOP field with the most racial and ethnic diversity was in 2016, when one Black candidate (Ben Carson) and two Hispanic candidates (Marco Rubio and Ted Cruz) sought the nomination.

Alan Keyes, who is Black, ran long shot Republican bids in 1996, 2000 and 2008.

How many women are running?

Haley is the 2024 Republican field’s lone woman.

That’s par for the course in contested Republican primaries this century. In 2000, former Cabinet member and future North Carolina Sen. Elizabeth Dole ran. In 2012, then-Rep. Michele Bachmann of Minnesota ran. In 2016, corporate executive Carly Fiorina ran.

Los Angeles Dodgers star Mookie Betts opts to keep away from haunted Milwaukee resort

(KTLA) — The Los Angeles Dodgers are in Milwaukee this week for a three-game series with the NL Central-leading Brewers, and while team unity is important during long road trips, one Dodger star is keeping his distance from the rest of the team “just in case.”

According to Orange County Register reporter Bill Plunkett, outfielder Mookie Betts rented an Airbnb with some friends while the rest of his Dodger teammates stayed in a legendary 130-year-old hotel in Milwaukee.

The reason, Betts said, is due to long-rumored reports of hauntings and other creepy happenings at the Pfister Hotel.

The Pfister Hotel is one of the most historic buildings in Milwaukee. The famed luxury hotel is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and has hosted billionaires, diplomats and more — it’s also rumored to be home to an intrepid spirit or two.

Betts, 30, who has stayed at the hotel in years past, said he opted for the modern setting instead of the historic grounds “just in case” rumors of the specters and spirits turned out to be true.

“You can tell me what happened after,” he joked with Plunkett. “I just don’t want to find out myself.”

An eight-year MLB veteran, Betts has stayed at his fair share of hotels, resorts and high-rises over the years, but the Pfister Hotel has affected his sleep schedule in recent stays.

“I couldn’t sleep,” Betts told the OC Register. “Every noise, I’d be like, ‘Is that something?’”

The Pfister Hotel has been the subject of haunting rumors for decades, and it’s one of the oldest hotels that MLB teams regularly visit for road trips. It’s led to many reports of strange and creepy occurrences from the players brave enough to stay overnight.

Michael Young, former seven-time MLB All Star and one-time Dodger, told ESPN the Magazine that he heard footsteps “stomping” around in his room. He recalled telling his ghostly visitor to “make yourself at home” but keep the noise down.

Bryce Harper, a two-time National League MVP, said he had a strange experience when staying in the historic hotel, claiming that his clothes he had laid out the night before ended up on the floor and a table was moved across the room.

“I honestly thought there might be someone in my room. I had no idea what the hell just happened, so I actually looked around, and then I checked to see if the door was still latched, and it was,” Harper said. He told reporters that he thought he may have been the victim of a prank by one of his teammates.

In 2018, Cardinals players Carlos Martinez and Marcell Ozuna bunked up together after allegedly spotting one of the Pfister’s unaccounted for guests. Martinez, a pitcher, started the next day’s game against the Brewers and was hammered by Milwaukee’s batters and was pulled after giving up seven runs in only four innings.

So maybe Betts’ extra precautions aren’t that crazy, even if the change of venue simply promises a sounder sleep. If the Dodgers want to maintain their spot near the top of the National League, he and his teammates will probably need to be well-rested.

Let’s just hope Betts and his friends didn’t mistakenly book a stay at one of Airbnb’s most haunted hangouts.

The Dodgers dropped their first game of their series against the Brewers in Milwaukee, but were on their way to winning the second game on Tuesday. The series concludes Wednesday.

Brewers full doubleheader sweep of Giants; Peralta exits early | Milwaukee Brewers

MILWAUKEE — Garrett Mitchell hit an RBI double and the Milwaukee Brewers withstood Freddy Peralta’s early exit to beat the San Francisco Giants 4-2 and complete a doubleheader sweep Thursday night.

In the opening game, Corbin Burnes struck out 14 and allowed three hits in eight shutout innings in a 2-1 victory.

Peralta left the second game due to fatigue in his right shoulder after walking Tommy La Stella to lead off the third inning. The Brewers led 3-0 at the time.

The Brewers are at home for 20 of their last 26 games, a stretch that started with this double header. They’re hoping that schedule helps them go on a late surge as they attempt to chase down the Philadelphia Phillies and San Diego Padres for the NL’s final wild-card spots.

“Having all these home games at the end is definitely going to help us with this playoff push, but it takes some good baseball for us to get in there,” Burnes said.

Burnes entered this doubleheader having allowed 17 earned runs in 21 innings over his last four starts. But he dominated the Giants and showcased the form that enabled him to win the NL Cy Young Award last season.

He struck out 10 or more batters for the ninth time this season to tie the Brewers’ single-season record set by Ben Sheets in 2004. Burnes (10-6) also holds the franchise record for double-digit strikeout games with 21.

The 14 strikeouts were one off Burnes’ career high. He had 15 in a 10-0 victory over the Chicago Cubs on Aug. 11, 2021.

“Nothing new,” Giants manager Gabe Kapler said. “That’s Corbin Burnes. That was as good as we’ve seen him. His stuff was carrying through the zone. He was hitting the top of the zone. His cutter was working well. The ball was moving all over the place. It’s tough to name five better starters in baseball.”

Burnes needed to be at his best to outduel San Francisco’s Jakob Junis (4-5), who struck out four and allowed three hits, two runs and two walks in six innings. Junis entered in the second inning, relieving opener Scott Alexander.

The Giants opened the scoring in the third inning as LaMonte Ward hit a two-out single and came home on Mike Yastrzemski’s double. Milwaukee’s Christian Yelich and Hunter Renfroe hit consecutive RBI doubles in the fourth.

Milwaukee took the lead for good in the second game by scoring three runs in the first inning off Alex Young (0-1). Only one of the runs was earned.

Joc Pederson homered for the Giants in the second game.

Milwaukee’s Peter Strzelecki (2-1) pitched two innings of scoreless relief to get the win in the second game.

Devin Williams got his 11th save in 12 opportunities in the first game. Taylor Rogers finished the second game for his 31st save in 39 opportunities.

The two teams combined for just 16 hits in the double header. The Brewers had nine and the Giants had seven.

SIBLING RIVALRIES

This doubleheader had two sets of brothers facing off.

Taylor Rogers and Giants reliever Tyler Rogers are identical twins. San Francisco’s Scott Alexander is the older brother of Brewers right-hander Jason Alexander.

Jason Alexander is the Brewers’ scheduled starter Friday, so he was unlikely to pitch in Thursday’s doubleheader.

According to Elias Sports Bureau, the last time two sets of brothers played against each other in the same game was Aug. 6, 1977, when St. Louis’ Hector Cruz and Bob Forsch and Houston’s Jose Cruz and Ken Forsch all played in a game the Cardinals won 3-1. Elias’ records only accounted for instances in which all four siblings saw action in the game.

TRAINER’S ROOM

Brewers IF Luis Urías was hit in the helmet by a pitch from Sean Hjelle in the sixth inning of the second game. Urías remained in the game after a brief delay.

RHP Justin Topa was designated as the Brewers’ 29th man for the doubleheader. Topa hadn’t pitched in the majors since Sept. 3, 2021, as he recovered from a third elbow surgery. … The Brewers also reinstated INF Mike Brosseau (right oblique) from the injured list and optioned OF Esteury Ruiz to Triple-A Nashville.

Report: 3K households in Milwaukee are with out plumbing, principally affecting Black and low-income residents

Milwaukee ranks third in the nation for residents without access to running water at home, according to a new report from Kings College London.

The report found that there are approximately 3,000 households in Milwaukee with no water pipes – if four people lived in one house, it would mean 12,000 people in the city of Milwaukee do not have access to water at home.

This number has remained unchanged since 2000, according to the report.

As other cities have improved, Milwaukee’s ranking jumped from 20th to 3rd among the metropolitan areas with the highest relative proportion of household poverty between 2000 and 2017.

We see no change in poverty in plumbing equates to no progress,” says the report. “Stagnation should be understood as a wake-up call to the heads of state and government in these cities to prioritize measures that are geared towards infrastructural equity and supply for all households.”

Most of these houses belong to people of color in poor areas.

But the city of Milwaukee says the report is incorrect.

“We have water meters on every apartment building in Milwaukee,” said Jeff Fleming, director of communications for Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett. “It goes against logic for anyone to claim that there are thousands of uninstalled homes in Milwaukee.”

The report found that other cities across the country, including San Francisco and Phoenix, are facing similar problems, but Milwaukee’s history of segregation and redlining has exacerbated plumbing poverty as well as the city’s location in the Rust Belt. The unforgiving downsizing of Milwaukee’s heavy industrial sector that began in the 1970s hit the city’s black middle class hardest, and parts of the city never recovered.

“The legacy of redlining, institutional discrimination and urbanism against blacks have created an unequal and unfair environment for people of color, especially black Milwaukeans,” the report said.

In 2017, 28 percent of those with incomplete plumbing were black, although blacks make up only 16.1 percent of metropolitan Milwaukee’s population.

“Future research is needed to examine the geography of overrepresentation among black Milwaukeeans and to examine whether the unequal outcomes of poverty outcomes in plumbing represent a new form of infrastructural redlining in the city,” the report said.

Kings College London has studied a handful of cities. Austin, Texas jumped from 17th to fifth place; Cleveland, 33rd through sixth; Nashville from 22nd to 12th; and Seattle from March 37th to 14th

A report published last year by Marc Levine, a professor emeritus of history, economic development, and urban research at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, found that Milwaukee ranks last in the study of racial inequality in the country’s 50 largest metropolitan areas .

Milwaukee Irish Fest transferring ahead with three-day occasion in August

Summerfest, PrideFest, Polish Fest, German Fest and Festa Italiana have already postponed or canceled their plans for 2021.

But the Milwaukee Irish Fest is still in August, officials said on Wednesday.

The board of the festival’s parent company, CelticMKE, decided in a meeting on Tuesday evening to hold a personal event in Maier Festival Park. This emerges from an email CelticMKE Executive Director Mike Mitchell sent to Irish Fest supporters on Wednesday. The organization confirmed the news on Wednesday evening on Facebook.

The Irish festival is scheduled for August 20-22 and lasts three days instead of the usual four days for this 40th anniversary.

“Our festival prep is about prioritizing the wellbeing and safety of our customers, volunteers, salespeople, entertainers and employees,” said Mitchell in a press release released early Wednesday evening. “With the introduction of vaccinations, we are comfortable taking the steps to create an Irish experience this summer that is safe for everyone to enjoy.”

“We will do everything we can to ensure a safe environment,” continued Mitchell. “We will make any necessary adjustments to our operations and change the layout to comply with regulations, restrictions, and recommendations as of the date of issue.” our festival. ”

Irish festival officials said there will be disinfection stations across the site and the festival will improve its cleaning protocols.

The festival had around 100,000 visitors in 2019, but capacity this year may be limited, according to the press release. Officials are urging festival goers to buy tickets when they go on sale in the coming weeks to guarantee entry.

Mask requirements, rapid tests, and vaccination records are possible concepts discussed by event industry executives for the first U.S. festivals since the pandemic began, but no hard and fast protocol has been drawn up.

A line-up will be posted later this spring, and a schedule will be posted this summer.

Like practically every other summer event in the City of Festivals last year, a personal Irish festival has been canceled in 2020. Instead, officials organized a 33-hour virtual festival last August, a mix of new remote performances and presentations, and archive concert material that had more than 42,000 views and helped offset the $ 200,000 already spent on the scrapped personal event had been. However, with vaccination rates soaring, there is hope that the country will be able to achieve herd immunity by late summer, making big festivals possible again. The previous Wednesday, Bonnaroo in Tennessee had announced a stacked line-up for September 2-5, led by Foo Fighters, Lizzo, Megan Thee Stallion and Tyler, The Creator. Billie Eilish, Green Day and Tame Impala to headline the Life Is Beautiful festival in Las Vegas in September, while other major events such as the Governor’s Ball in New York, Outside Lands in San Francisco and the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival announced dates for them have September and October.

The Maier Festival Park is closer to home and offers several events in late summer and autumn, including the Mexican Festival from August 27th to 29th and the Black Arts Festival MKE on August 7th. In addition, five concerts are on the program. From July to September, the American Family Insurance Amphitheater was reconstructed without the headliners of the summer festival, which has yet to be confirmed for this September.

But as the pandemic continues, that calendar will remain tentative.
