KEXP expands to San Francisco: Seattle’s favorite nonprofit radio station is growing into California. KEXP announced via a donor email that it purchased San Francisco’s KREV 92.7 with a winning bid of $3.75 million as part of a bankruptcy auction. So long as the Federal Communications Commissions gives them the green light, KEXP will start operations in SF in the next few months.

THING ditches Port Townsend: Seattle Theater Group’s eclectic arts fest, THING, will no longer take place in Port Townsend. After declining ticket sales in the event’s three-year run, STG determined Port Townsend was the problem. The town is difficult to get to and doesn’t have a ton of lodging for a slew of guests. It is damn pretty, though. Ah well, THING will live on, just somewhere else. STG has not said where, though.

Good news for this dog: On Monday night, a fire swept through SODO’s dog daycare, Dog Resort. In the hubbub of trying not to die in the fire, Remi, a dog, went missing. Three days letter, Remi turned up after reportedly falling off a ramp near Lumen Field. She is now at a veterinarian’s office in critical condition. Remi’s owner is currently in Japan. The owner’s other dog, Georgie, turned up on I-5 after the fire.

Hey, I heard you like weather: So, here’s some weather stuff. First off, it will be rainy on Saturday through early Sunday afternoon. Other than that, the weekend and the following week is looking cool, crisp, and dry. Pretty different from the soggy first half of this month.

Already half way through November. Seattle weather stats for the month so far ( thru the 15th ).

A modest quake: A 3.1 magnitude earthquake gave Snohomish County a nice little rattle Thursday night.

Hey, I heard you like the moon: So, here’s some moon stuff.

Diddy sued for rape, sex trafficking: The signer Cassie filed a suit Thursday against Sean “Diddy” Combs, the rapper, hiphop mogul, and billionaire. Combs signed a then-19-year-old Cassie to his label in 2005. At the time, Combs was 37. Several years later, the two entered into a romantic relationship. However, according to Cassie, Combs “raped her in her home after she tried to leave him, ‘blew up’ another man’s car after learning of his romantic interest in the singer, and often beat and kicked her,” NBC News reports. She also alleged Combs forced her to engage in sex acts with other men while he filmed it. Cassie named Combs as well as Bad Boy Records, Bad Boy Entertainment, Epic Records, and Combs Enterprises as defendants.

UN stops delivering food to Gaza: After telephone and internet service in Gaza failed due to a lack of food, the United Nations said it was forced to stop delivering food and supplies. The UN warned of widespread starvation. Israel budged a tiny bit and said it would allow “‘very minimal’ daily shipments of fuel into Gaza for use by the UN and communications system,” according to the Associated Press. However, the UN said the amount Israel has greenlit will not be enough “to fuel water systems, hospitals, and trucks to deliver aid.”

Protesters block bridges: Over 200 protesters blocked the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge to urge President Joe Biden to call for a ceasefire in Gaza. Biden was in San Francisco for a global trade summit. Protestors blocked all lanes of the bridge’s upper deck with their cars. Some even threw their keys into the bay. Police arrested 80 people and had 29 cars towed. Bostonian ceasefire protesters also blocked some car infrastructure, stalling traffic across the bridge connecting Boston to Cambridge for two hours.

Rep. George Santos faces expulsion—again: On Thursday, the House Ethics Committee found “substantial evidence” that Santos “used campaign funds for personal purposes, defrauded donors, and filed false or incomplete campaign finance and financial disclosures,” the New York Times reports. According to the report, Santos may have used that campaign money for personal Botox and to pay for OnlyFans subscriptions. Santos announced he would not be running for reelection. On Friday, Republican Rep. Michael Guest, chairman of the House Ethics Committee, filed a resolution seeking to expel Santos from Congress.

Nazis are no good for business: IBM will stop paying for ads on Twitter/X after an ad for the computing company ran alongside pro-Nazi content.
A recommendation for your Friday: Maybe I’m behind the times on this, but have you watched The Righteous Gemstones on HBO? It’s sort of like if Succession were a ridiculous comedy about an ultra-wealthy mega church family in the South. I’m having a ball with it.

In its second year, the 2023 Mass Timber Competition: Building to Net-Zero Carbon, will award $2.2 million to five winners, showcasing mass timber’s architectural versatility and its crucial role in cutting carbon emissions in the built environment.

Funded jointly by the Softwood Lumber Board (SLB) and USDA Forest Service (USDA), the competition has awarded proposals exemplifying novel ways of designing and constructing mass timber buildings in the U.S. at a higher scale, as well as a commitment to strengthen the mass timber supply chain by using domestically sourced wood from sustainably managed forests. Award recipients have pledged to share with the broader design and construction community lessons learned during project phases, including cost analyses, lifecycle assessments (LCA), and other research results.

This year’s winning proposals included:

CODA Detroit
Building type: Mixed-use residential
Location: Detroit, Michigan
Project team: OOMBRA Architects, Brush Park Properties/IN Development Partners, JDH Engineering, Britt Peters and Associates, and AM Higley.

An 8,826-m2 (95,000-sf), five-story mixed-use residential project, inspired by a former carriage house shell that was located on the property in the historic Brush Park neighborhood. The project is built around a new carriage house enclosure that honors the legacy of the original with a nod to its scale and form. The mass timber structure includes glue-laminated (glulam) beams, columns, and cross-laminated timber (CLT) floors.

Up@310 Lofts
Project type: Vertical addition on 310 Marlboro St.
Location: Keene, New Hampshire
Project team: Lignin Group, Verahaus Structural, Banwell Architects, and Entuitive.

This overbuild will add three stories and 57 apartments on top of a steel building, providing an example of how mass timber can be used to vertically expand existing structures, adding density.

Via/NWA IC Program
Building type: Affordable multifamily housing
Location: Springdale, Arkansas
Project team: A226, Blue Crane, modus studio, Tatum-Smith-Welcher Engineers, Aspect Structural Engineers, and Arco Construction.

This affordable workforce housing project is designed to be constructed with a standardized kit of parts of CLT panels and bathroom modules, exploring further possibilities for mass timber offsite construction.

The Village SF Wellness Center
Building type: Mixed-use
Location: San Francisco, California.
Project team: PYATOK architecture + urban design, The Friendship House Association of American Indians, DCI Engineers, and Cahill Contractors.

This mixed-use Native American cultural center in San Francisco will include a cultural and elders hall, a youth center, medical clinics, supportive housing, and a rooftop garden and farm in a six-story structure. The Type IV-C mass timber structure will be left exposed on the interior to reinforce the owners’ commitment to natural surfaces. The structural system includes a post-and-beam glulam system with CLT panels.

Woolsey Gardens
Building type: Mid-rise multifamily
Location: Berkeley, California
Project team: Solomon Cordwell Buenz, Northern California Land Trust, Tipping Structural Engineers, Swinerton Builders, and Timberlab.

An eight-story, 5,534-m2 (59,570-sf) mixed-use, high-rise multifamily project chose mass timber because it offers several tangible benefits to the project, including sequestering a significant amount of carbon and meet the project’s environmental goals, addressing overstocked forests in Northern California and the Pacific Northwest, and supporting an ambitious construction schedule and construction staging limitations. Projected to be the first Type IV-C mass timber building in California, the project’s primary structural system will rely on CLT panels for floor framing and glulam beams and columns.

WoodWorks, a non-profit staffed with structural engineers, architects, and construction experts, conducted technical screening and evaluation of the entries. Finalists were chosen by an independent jury representing the fields of architecture, structural engineering, construction, real estate development, and forest products.

“The SLB was encouraged to see the architecture and construction community continue to expand implementation of mass timber systems in effective ways across a range of building types,” says Ryan Flom, chief marketing officer at SLB. “This year’s winning projects will not only provide much needed housing and gathering spaces for their communities, but they will also demonstrate viable paths for other teams to build for wellbeing, commercial adoption, resilience, and a minimal carbon footprint.”

BOSTON (State House News Service) – The population of Massachusetts shrunk by nearly 8,000 people between July 2021 and July 2022, a drop of about 0.1 percent, but the newest estimate released in fresh data from the U.S. Census Bureau puts the state’s population ahead of its revised 2020 Census level.

Boston Red Sox Opening Day at Fenway

The bureau’s “Vintage 2022 estimates of population and components of change” released Thursday estimated a total Massachusetts population of 6,981,974 as of July 1, 2022. That was a decrease of 7,716 people statewide from the estimate for July 1, 2021.

The new data puts numbers to some of the migration concerns that have fueled Gov. Maura Healey’s push for changes to the state’s short-term capital gains and estate taxes, and color the challenges that businesses of all types have been having as they try to hire people in Massachusetts.

“We can’t be the outlier that we are because too many people leave — 100,000 people. More people will leave this week, this month. So we need to do something,” Healey said this week when the Revenue Committee held a hearing on her tax package (H 42). On Wednesday, Housing and Economic Development Secretary Yvonne Hao said an average of 1,100 residents left Massachusetts per week last year.

The 2020 U.S. Census initially counted 7,029,917 people living in Massachusetts, but the bureau announced last May that it had actually overcounted by 2.24 percent and reduced its population count for the Bay State to 6,784,000 people. Compared to that revised figure, the July 2022 estimate released Thursday would represent an increase of almost 200,000 people. The latest estimate is based on the 2020 Census and more recent data on births, deaths and migration.

Massachusetts experienced 70,019 births and 63,716 deaths between July 1, 2021 and July 1, 2022 — a net “natural increase” of 6,303 people. Over the same time, Massachusetts experienced a net outflow of 57,292 people to other states in the U.S., the UMass Donahue Institute said, and a net inflow of 43,880 people from other countries — resulting in net negative total migration of 13,412 people.

Area economists affiliated with the MassBenchmarks journal reported Thursday that Massachusetts has a “declining labor force and shrinking working age population” and needs to focus on competitiveness issues in the areas of housing, transportation, and high costs relative to other states.

“With little or no labor force or working age population growth, the stateâ€s employers are having to draw on labor from elsewhere,” according to the latest MassBenchmarks bulletin. “Recent growth in the size of neighboring New Hampshire’s labor force (in contrast to the Massachusetts decline) may exemplify that Massachusetts is bringing in labor from other states, whether in-commuting or working remotely.”

The counties that saw the greatest population decline by number from July 2021 to July 2022 were Suffolk County (a loss of 5,384 people), Hampden County (a loss of 1,808 people) and Berkshire County (loss of 762 people). By percentage, the largest decline was in Duke County — Martha’s Vineyard lost 1.14 percent of its roughly 21,000-person population.

Norfolk County saw the largest increase in its population by number and percentage, gaining 839 people over the year, the Census said, a 0.12 percent increase. Worcester County was close behind with a pickup of 795 people, and Bristol County grew by 173 people.

None of Massachusetts’ 14 counties ranked in the top 10 nationwide for population growth or decline, either by total number or by percentage.

Whitman County, Washington, was the fastest-growing county between July 2021 and July 2022 (up 10.1 percent), with the remaining top 10 fastest-growing counties being in Texas (five of the top 10), Florida, Georgia and North Carolina.

“I don’t want to see people going to Texas or to — I mean, Austin’s cool, but whatever — or to Florida, you know, North Carolina. But this is the dynamic right now,” Healey said in early March when she pitched her tax plan to business leaders.

Lassen County, California, declined at the fastest rate (6 percent) and Los Angeles County, California, lost the greatest number of people (about 90,700), according to the new data.

The Census Bureau said that just more than half (52.5 percent) of the nation’s 3,144 counties grew between 2021 and 2022, down from 55.7 percent the year before. Meanwhile 47.1 percent of counties saw population declines and 0.3 percent saw no change.

“The migration and growth patterns for counties edged closer to pre-pandemic levels this year,” Christine Hartley, assistant division chief for estimates and projections in the Census Bureau’s population division, said. “Some urban counties, such as Dallas and San Francisco, saw domestic outmigration at a slower pace between 2021 and 2022, compared to the prior year. Meanwhile, many counties with large universities saw their populations fully rebound this year as students returned.”

SAN FRANCISCO — Nine people were injured in a mass shooting in San Francisco’s Mission District on Friday night in what police say appeared to be a “targeted and isolated” incident.

The San Francisco Chronicle reported that the shooting happened just after 9 p.m. during a party hosted by a clothing store near the intersection of 24th Street and Treat Avenue.

The San Francisco Police Department initially said all of the victims “were expected to survive their injuries.” However, a statement from Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital said one of the victims remained in critical condition as of Saturday afternoon.

Another was said to be in serious condition, four were in good condition and three had already been released. According to the hospital, the victims were eight men and one woman between the ages of 20 and 34.

Police Chief William Scott called the violence “unacceptable”.

“People should feel safe going out in San Francisco without fear of gun violence,” Scott said. “Our investigators are working diligently on this case and we will continue to have a visible police presence in the community where this incident occurred.”

Dying Breed, a clothing store near the intersection where the shooting occurred, was scheduled to celebrate its sixth anniversary with a block party Friday night, according to a post on the store’s Instagram account.

A person who answered the phone at the store declined to comment.

The Mission District is one of San Francisco’s oldest neighborhoods and was named after the Mission Dolores – a Spanish mission from 1776. Historically Latino and increasingly gentrified in recent years, the lively neighborhood is home to numerous restaurants and shops.

Mayor London Breed said first responders responded quickly to the shooting, noting that “no life was lost”.

“I know there are a lot of questions and concerns in the community and people want answers,” Breed said. “We are still working to understand exactly what happened and why, and we will share information as soon as possible.”

Nine people were shot dead in San Francisco’s Mission District on Friday night and the victims – ranging in age from 19 to 35 – are all expected to survive, according to the city’s police department.

Officers responded before 9:07 p.m. on 24th Street and Treat Avenue, officials said. Those shot dead were mostly men between the ages of 22 and 29, but the victims also included two men in their 30s and a 19-year-old woman. The police did not provide information on the age and gender of a victim.

“As of this writing, it appears to be a targeted and isolated incident,” police said in a tweet. “There is currently no known risk to the public.”

SFPD Deputy Chief Raj Vaswani wrote that some of the injuries were considered life-threatening.

Dying Breed, a clothing store on the corner where the shooting occurred, threw a five-year anniversary block party on Friday night, according to posts on the store’s Instagram account. Store employees declined to comment when reached by phone.

In a small press conference Friday night at the scene, officer Eve Laokwansathitaya confirmed the number of casualties and said all were expected to survive. The police asked the population to avoid the area.

“I could see a victim,” said a witness who lives at the intersection, who asked not to be named. “I heard the shooting loud and clear but did not see it with my own eyes. The corner I live in is now taped up with yellow tape, cops are taking notes looking for spent shots I think.” [A victim] was cared for by three people until the emergency arrived. It looked very serious.”

According to a witness who filmed the incident and posted footage to Twitter, a self-driving Cruise car blocked emergency medicine access to the crime scene. In the video, a police officer could be seen and heard yelling for the robotic taxi to drive away as it was blocking access to the emergency room and fire department. The cruise car was about a block from the crime scene at the time the video was captured.

“Suddenly, cops, fire engines, and ambulances were moving down Folsom toward 24th,” said Paul Valdez, who recorded the incident. “The cruise car just pulled up on Folsom. An officer got out of his car, banged on the window and shouted for the car to pull off the road and get out of the way.”

“Our car first stopped as it approached an active emergency site, then reversed and stopped,” a Cruise spokesman wrote on Twitter. “During this time, all vehicles, including emergency vehicles, were able to drive around our car.”

San Francisco Transportation Superintendent Jeffrey Tumlin and other city officials have publicly criticized self-driving cars as unsafe. The California Public Utilities Commission appears close to approving near-unlimited use of Cruise and Waymo robotic taxis in San Francisco later this month.

Mayor London Breed tweeted about the shooting on Saturday, noting that the incident is still under investigation. At the same time, he thanked the first responders and staff at Zuckerberg General Hospital for making sure no lives were lost.

What we do know is that our @SF_emergency 911 dispatchers, @SFPD, paramedics and @ZSFGCare medical staff all responded quickly to this shooting and no life was lost. Many thanks to all the employees of our city who responded to this terrible event in the mission.

— London Breed (@LondonBreed) June 10, 2023

Anyone with information about the shooting can contact the San Francisco Police Department at 415-575-4444 or send a tip to TIP411.
