San Francisco Mayoral Candidate Proposes Ban On New Marijuana Dispensaries

San Francisco supervisor Ahsha Safaiwho is also the 2024 mayoral candidate proposed a ban on new marijuana dispensaries in the city.

Citing safety concerns and an unregulated market, Safaí’s controversial move has sparked heated debate in the city.

According to The SF Standard, the city’s cannabis landscape has received both praise and scrutiny since recreational use was legalized in 2016. However, Safaí says it is time to reassess the situation.

Noting the abundance of existing cannabis retail outlets, Safaí expressed concern at the alarming rise in burglaries and public safety issues.

“To be clear, we have no shortage of cannabis retail outlets and many suffer from brazen burglaries, public safety concerns and an unregulated market lacking proper enforcement.”

His proposal puts a temporary moratorium on new applications for pharmacies and asks City Hall to prioritize processing existing applications for equity.

San Francisco already has about 30 dispensaries and 30 medical cannabis stores.

Critics argue that the proposed ban could hamper industry growth and stifle competition.

According to manager Rafael Mandelman“Cannabis companies create good jobs for San Francisco residents and provide safe, regulated products to their customers.”

The first hearing of the proposal is on May 25 before the Public Safety and Neighborhood Services Committee, leaving the future of cannabis expansion in the city uncertain.

Fairfield Police Uncover Unlawful Marijuana Rising Operation In 2 Places – CBS San Francisco

FAIRFIELD (BCN) – Police in Fairfield red-tagged a commercial building and a residence last week for being too dangerous for occupation or habitation after more than 1,500 marijuana plants were discovered being grown illegally inside the two buildings.

Officers were dispatched to the 200 block of Bell Avenue at about 7:15 am last Friday regarding a suspicious incident and possible burglary. Once on scene, major damage to a roll-up garage door was detected and the front door to the building was ajar. Inside during a search, police found multiple rooms filled with more than 900 marijuana plants, grow lights, illegal and exposed electrical wiring modified plumbing, ventilation systems and unknown chemicals.

No one was located inside the commercial building.

During the early morning hours of last Saturday, police were dispatched to the 3000 block of Dover Avenue following up on a report of a residential burglary in progress and gunfire being exchanged. When officers arrived, they found the front door pried open, broken glass and the front door riddled with bullet holes. During the investigation, more than 600 marijuana plants were found inside along with firearms, grow lights, illegal and exposed electrical wiring ventilation systems and unknown chemicals.

There have been no arrests.

President Joe Biden signed a $ 1.9 trillion historic stimulus bill on March 11 to help Americans through the COVID-19 pandemic.

But the bill has not been easy in the Capitol, and many Republicans have criticized the incentive, arguing that it is an expensive expense for liberal priorities unrelated to COVID.

The American Rescue Plan’s aid package includes funding for a national vaccination plan and immediate and direct support for families most affected by the pandemic.

The claim

The facts

San Francisco will receive around $ 600 million in incentives which, according to the mayor’s office, “will help us prevent many of the drastic cuts that would otherwise be on the table.”

Cannabis for both medical and adult recreational use is legal under California law, and therefore legal in San Francisco.

SFPH said the policy is an “evidence-based harm reduction strategy” designed to prevent guests from leaving quarantine to look for substances.

Speaking to Newsweek, Pelosi’s assistant chief of staff, Drew Hammill, said no federal funds would be used to provide alcohol and marijuana to the homeless in San Francisco.

McCarthy’s office did not respond to a request from Newsweek to expand its claim.
